- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo, episode 210. I'm Lucas, and as always, I'm here with Luna. Luna: Hey everybody. Lucas, last time we got our hair all fancy at the salon. Today, I need something a little more... quiet. Lucas: Quiet, you say. Are we off to the library? Luna: Even better. A bookstore. I want to find a good book to read on my days off. Lucas: Oh, perfect. And a bookstore is a great place to practice some Cantonese. Let's learn how to say what you want to buy. Luna: Alright. I'm ready. Let's do this. Lucas: So, if you want to say 'I want to buy a book', it's '我想買一本書'. Repeat after me. Luna: 我想買一本書. Lucas: Yes, good. Now let's break it down slightly. '我想' means 'I want to', and '買一本書' means 'buy a book'. Luna: So '買一本書' is the book part? That seems easy. Lucas: Exactly. Now, if you want to ask how much a book costs, you say '一本書幾多錢'. Luna: 一本書幾多錢. Lucas: Right. '幾多錢' means 'how much money'. So you're literally asking 'a book, how much money?' Luna: That makes sense. So I could say '我想買一本書,一本書幾多錢?' Lucas: Perfect. That's a great sentence. Now, once you decide which one you want, you say '我要呢本'. That means 'I want this one'. Luna: 我要呢本. This one. Nice. Lucas: And if you want to express that you really like reading books, you say '我好鍾意睇書'. Luna: Oh, that's a good one. 我好鍾意睇書. Lucas: Great, Luna. You're picking this up fast. Now, what if you want to ask if there are other books? You can say '有冇其他書'. Luna: 有冇其他書. That's like 'is there any other book?' Lucas: Exactly. '有冇' means 'to have or not have', and '其他書' means 'other books'. Luna: So if I'm in a bookstore, I could say '有冇其他書' to ask if they have something else. Lucas: Absolutely. Now let's put some of these together in a little scene. Imagine you walk into a bookstore. What do you say first? Luna: Uhh, maybe '你好,我想買一本書'. Lucas: Perfect. Then the shopkeeper might ask '你要咩書?' meaning 'what book do you want?' Luna: And I could say '有冇其他書?' Lucas: Yes, that works. Or you could point to a book and say '我要呢本'. Luna: Then I'd ask '一本書幾多錢?' Lucas: Exactly. You've got the whole transaction down. You know, this is a good point to mention something about Fexingo. Luna: Oh yeah, we've been meaning to bring this up. Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with your Cantonese, and you appreciate that we keep this show free, you can support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That helps us keep everything ad-free. Luna: Yeah, we love making this for you, and it's nice to know it helps. Alright, back to books. Lucas: So, Luna, let's do a quick practice. I'll be the shopkeeper. You ask for a book. Luna: 你好,我想買一本書. Lucas: 我哋有好多書。你想買邊本? Luna: 有冇其他書? 我鍾意睇小說。 Lucas: 有,呢邊有好多小說。你要呢本? Luna: 我要呢本。一本書幾多錢? Lucas: 五十蚊。好抵呀! Luna: 五十蚊?咁平。我好鍾意睇書,所以好開心. Lucas: Excellent! You used all the phrases. Let's do a quick recap. We had '我想買一本書' to say what you want, '一本書幾多錢' to ask the price, '我要呢本' to choose, '我好鍾意睇書' to express your love of reading, and '有冇其他書' to ask for other options. Luna: That's a solid set. I feel ready for my bookstore trip. Lucas: And remember, you can mix them in real conversations. Practice makes perfect. Thanks for listening to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. We'll see you next time. Luna: Take care, everyone.
