- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean here and it is Thursday.
- 0:16It's the 12th of March. And you, you clever things you
- 0:19have tapped on play and you have said, Sean, let's read a chapter
- 0:23of the Bible. In fact, let's read another
- 0:25chapter of the Gospel of Mark because this is like being
- 0:29strapped into a roller coaster following Jesus around.
- 0:32It is no boring ride. There must not have been a
- 0:35single day that was dull being around Jesus as he moved through
- 0:39the world. And you can just imagine, you
- 0:42can hear from Mark's words, this incredible energy around him and
- 0:47energy around all that's going on and the crowds just being
- 0:50drawn to him. Wow, how wonderful to be able to
- 0:55read these accounts. It isn't about you, but can you
- 0:58feel it like building in your chest and your stomach?
- 1:01The sense of emotion, this, this freneticism almost as we read
- 1:06through it, How about we get ourselves right into the zone?
- 1:10Our Holy Spirit take us back to that time to feel the excitement
- 1:17in the crowd around us, the incredulity of the authorities,
- 1:21the gratitude of the people being loved and cared for by
- 1:24Jesus so that we can truly experience the message of this
- 1:30gospel for ourselves Today. Our friends, I'm excited.
- 1:35Let us read it together. Mark chapter 2.
- 1:48When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news
- 1:52spread quickly that he was back home.
- 1:55Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with
- 1:57visitors that there was no more room even outside the door.
- 2:01While he was preaching God's word to them, four men arrived
- 2:05carrying a paralysed man on a mat.
- 2:07They couldn't bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they
- 2:11dug a hole through the roof above his head.
- 2:14Then they lowered the man on his mat right down in front of
- 2:18Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said
- 2:21to the paralysed man, My child, your sins are forgiven.
- 2:27But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting
- 2:29there thought to themselves, What is he saying?
- 2:33This is blasphemy. Only God can forgive sins.
- 2:37Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking.
- 2:40So we asked them, Why do you question this in your hearts?
- 2:43Is it easier to say to the paralysed man your sins are
- 2:47forgiven or stand up, pick up your mat and walk?
- 2:52So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on
- 2:56earth to forgive sins. Then Jesus turned to the
- 3:00paralysed man and said, stand up, pick up your mat and go
- 3:04home. And the man jumped up, grabbed
- 3:07his mat and walked out through the stunned onlookers.
- 3:12They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, We've never
- 3:16seen anything like this before. Then Jesus went out to the
- 3:21Lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him.
- 3:25As he walked along, he saw Levi, son of Alpheus, sitting at his
- 3:29tax collector's booth. Follow me and be my disciple,
- 3:34Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him.
- 3:39Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as
- 3:43dinner guests along with many tax collectors and other
- 3:46disreputable sinners. There were many people of this
- 3:50kind among Jesus followers. But when the teachers of
- 3:54religious law, who were Pharisees saw him eating with
- 3:57tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his
- 3:59disciples Why does he eat with such scum?
- 4:04When Jesus heard this, he told them healthy people don't need a
- 4:08doctor, sick people do. I have come to call not those
- 4:13who think they are righteous, but those who know they are
- 4:16sinners. Once when John's disciples and
- 4:21the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked,
- 4:26Why don't your disciples fast like John's disciples and the
- 4:29Pharisees do? Jesus replied, Do wedding guests
- 4:33fast while celebrating with the groom?
- 4:36Of course not. They can't fast while the groom
- 4:39is with them. But someday the groom will be
- 4:42taken away from them, and then they will fast.
- 4:45Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth?
- 4:50For the new patch would shrink and RIP away from the old cloth,
- 4:53leaving an even bigger tear than before.
- 4:56And no one puts new wine into old wine skins, for the wine
- 5:01would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would
- 5:04both be lost. New wine calls for new wine
- 5:08skins. One Sabbath day, as Jesus was
- 5:13walking through some grain fields, his disciples began
- 5:16breaking off heads of grain to eat.
- 5:19But the Pharisees said to Jesus, Look, why are they breaking the
- 5:23law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?
- 5:26Jesus said to them, Haven't you ever read in the scriptures what
- 5:30David did when he and his companions were hungry?
- 5:33He went into the House of God during the days when Abiatha was
- 5:37high priest and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of
- 5:41bread that only the priests are allowed to eat.
- 5:44He also gave some to his companions.
- 5:47Then Jesus said to them, the Sabbath was made to meet the
- 5:51needs of people and not people to meet the requirements of the
- 5:54Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even
- 5:59over the Sabbath. Oh Jesus, we can hear as you
- 6:12moved around the old ways, just rattling and falling, as you
- 6:17showed people a new way of being and a new way of seeing the
- 6:20world and faith. Lord, you are new wine and the
- 6:26old wineskin just cannot hold you.
- 6:28You are new cloth and our old garments, our old ways of
- 6:33understanding and doing things just won't work.
- 6:38Lord, I pray that the old wineskins and the old clothes in
- 6:43our lives, these things that we continue to hold onto even
- 6:48though they don't make sense, in the light of all of the truth
- 6:51and the the beauty of what you bring to us.
- 6:55Lord, help us let those things go, whether their beliefs about
- 6:59us not being good enough, whether their beliefs about
- 7:03what's important and what we should be pursuing.
- 7:07Whatever those old ways are, Lord, we just offer them up to
- 7:10you. Pray that you, our new wine, our
- 7:16new way of being, our Saviour who changes everything, that you
- 7:20would be transformative and that our lives would be turned upside
- 7:25down in the most beautiful way as we are embraced by you and we
- 7:31embrace you and what changes you bring to our life.
- 7:36You're a wonderful, loving God and we're so grateful for you.
- 7:40And we pray all of this in your wonderful revolutionary name,
- 7:45Amen.
