- 0:27Speaker 1: I'm Peter Schrager. June has begun, Minatory camps have begun.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Certain players are in camp getting deals. Certain players are
- 0:36Speaker 1: not in camp and waiting for those deals that would
- 0:39Speaker 1: be like cde Lamb. We're gonna get to the football
- 0:42Speaker 1: in a little bit. Aaron wan Kaufman is with me. Aaron,
- 0:45Speaker 1: what's up? My friend? Not too much?
- 0:47Speaker 2: I want to hear. Maybe I'm jumping the gun here,
- 0:50Speaker 2: but do you do anything fun this weekend?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Peter, Yeah, let's let's get right into it. So this
- 0:54Speaker 1: is one of my favorite episodes annually, and we did
- 0:57Speaker 1: it last year the Big Slick Weekend in Kansas City.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Three years ago, Paul Rudd invited me to be a
- 1:05Speaker 1: quote unquote soelebrity guests at the Big Slick Weekend. I
- 1:08Speaker 1: had no idea what it was, but he's like, come
- 1:11Speaker 1: for a weekend in Kansas City. We're gonna, you know,
- 1:14Speaker 1: raise money for a children's hospital and we're also going
- 1:17Speaker 1: to have a softball game on Kaufman Field. You're gonna
- 1:21Speaker 1: play on the field where the Royals played before the game,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and there's a big event at night. Just come have
- 1:25Speaker 1: fun and hang I'm like all right. Since then, in
- 1:30Speaker 1: three years, this has become one of the most anticipated
- 1:35Speaker 1: events I'm my ear, but also one of the most rewarding.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And this year was insane. Where do I want to start? Cut?
- 1:41Speaker 1: Should we go through just a little, like, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 1: some of the highlights and is that what you think?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Just run it down because I'll tell you there are
- 1:48Speaker 1: some really cool moments that I wanted to spotlight and
- 1:51Speaker 1: also some really cool people. So yeah, get it, Like, yeah,
- 1:54Speaker 1: your travel day to day, let's go.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I fly in on Friday from Lakewardia easy flight. Last
- 2:00Speaker 1: year flight wasn't as easy. It was delayed, then it
- 2:03Speaker 1: was diverted to Detroit. It was a whole mess. This
- 2:05Speaker 1: year cleaning easy. Get into Kansas City and I get
- 2:07Speaker 1: off the plane and get to the car, go to
- 2:12Speaker 1: the hotel, and the first person I see is Sean
- 2:15Speaker 1: Evans from Hot Ones, the host who I have become
- 2:18Speaker 1: very good friends with through this big slick event. And
- 2:22Speaker 1: two of us are chopping it up and He's like,
- 2:23Speaker 1: I've got an amazing guest on this week, and I'm
- 2:26Speaker 1: stealing good coming off my recent podcast with Justin Reid
- 2:30Speaker 1: of the Kansas City Chiefs two type super Bowl champion
- 2:32Speaker 1: who won a chess tournament, and I'm looking at Sean
- 2:35Speaker 1: and I'm like, who you got this week? And he's
- 2:37Speaker 1: like Lewis Hamilton F one champion and a partial owner
- 2:41Speaker 1: of the Denver Broncos. I'm like, pretty good, that's pretty good.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Sean was going through his schedule of the Hot Ones
- 2:48Speaker 1: guests that they have. It's pretty impressive, it really is.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But the two of us are laughing right away. And
- 2:53Speaker 1: as we're laughing and having a good time, we get
- 2:55Speaker 1: tapped on the back and it's weird Al Yankovic who's
- 2:57Speaker 1: just arrived. What's some weird Al no accordion? And he
- 3:03Speaker 1: was there last year too, So the three of us
- 3:05Speaker 1: are talking like this is what big Slick Weekend has become.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Just like you don't know who's going to walk through
- 3:10Speaker 1: that door, and then they're gonna walk through. So we
- 3:13Speaker 1: get out, we get to like a meeting spot, get
- 3:15Speaker 1: on the van and it's Paul Rudd, It's Jason Sadekas,
- 3:19Speaker 1: it's Tidy Gardner, who's amazing from SNL and brought literally
- 3:23Speaker 1: like ten SNL colleagues with year, so I gotta shout
- 3:27Speaker 1: them out. This, Devin Walker, who is one of the
- 3:32Speaker 1: new cast mates, is fantastic. Punky Johnson is out of
- 3:35Speaker 1: her mind and is fantastic. James Austin Johnson who does
- 3:40Speaker 1: both Trump and Biden pretty quiet, and then he gets
- 3:43Speaker 1: into the character and he's incredible. Molly Kearney fantastic, And
- 3:50Speaker 1: there were a few others that we got to know
- 3:52Speaker 1: and they were all awesome, So we got the whole
- 3:53Speaker 1: SNL crew. I get on there, it's Rudd, it's Sadakas
- 3:56Speaker 1: we get to the game, and the first person to
- 3:58Speaker 1: tap me on the shoulder and you're like, what's up
- 4:00Speaker 1: man is Adam Scott, who I think is one of
- 4:02Speaker 1: the great actors of our generation. Party Down one of
- 4:05Speaker 1: my favorite TV show of all so underrated, and I
- 4:08Speaker 1: was telling him, I'm like, the clip of you singing
- 4:10Speaker 1: sweet Child of Mine with the family and step brothers
- 4:13Speaker 1: was recently making the rounds again and I'm like, it's
- 4:15Speaker 1: maybe the perfect comedic scene. And Adam was telling me
- 4:18Speaker 1: he's got a fifteen year old kid and a seventeen
- 4:20Speaker 1: year old kid, and of course Adam Scott, you're not
- 4:23Speaker 1: sure who parks and recreation and party down and all
- 4:26Speaker 1: the Appatow movies. And he's like, I got a fifteen
- 4:28Speaker 1: year old and a seventeen year old and he's like,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I hadn't seen step Brothers in ten years. He's like,
- 4:32Speaker 1: I typically do not watch my own shows. I put
- 4:35Speaker 1: it on. He's like, we're laughing hysterically. He's like, I'm
- 4:38Speaker 1: so proud of that movie and my kids loved it.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I'm like, that's great. So we have this softball game
- 4:44Speaker 1: and it's the Impractical Jokers are all there and Tech nine,
- 4:48Speaker 1: the rapper from the from the Kansas City area. It's fantastic.
- 4:53Speaker 1: He's there, Al Roker, George Went, Jeffrey Ross, the Roastmaster,
- 5:00Speaker 1: Robert Smigel. You go down the list of just people
- 5:03Speaker 1: that I've just long revered softball game. It's incredible. What
- 5:07Speaker 1: the coolest part though, is at night we go back
- 5:10Speaker 1: to the hotel and you get back to the hotel
- 5:13Speaker 1: and they rent out one of the floors of the
- 5:15Speaker 1: hotel and there's a suite and the sweet is from
- 5:18Speaker 1: like nineteen seventy five, and it's this giant, like four
- 5:22Speaker 1: thousand square foot suite and there's there's karaoke, there's a bar.
- 5:27Speaker 1: There's a magician, Blake Vote, who's fantastic and he's doing
- 5:31Speaker 1: magic tricks, and it's it's literally like, you know, I'm
- 5:36Speaker 1: not gonna say it's I'd never been to a Hollywood party,
- 5:39Speaker 1: but like, this is what I imagine them being in
- 5:41Speaker 1: the nineteen eighties, when it's like there's Magic Johnson, there's
- 5:44Speaker 1: Patrick Swayze, there's Eddie Murphy, there's Kurry Abdul Jabbar, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 1: like and oh there's Steve Sachs from the Dodgers. Like
- 5:52Speaker 1: just sports world combining with pop culture, combining with comedy,
- 5:57Speaker 1: like real hardcore comedy. Chops. Smigel's like carrying around Triumph
- 6:02Speaker 1: at this thing, so he's got Triumph the insult Tom
- 6:05Speaker 1: mcdonal like around like is he like interacting with people
- 6:09Speaker 1: as trying Yeah? Wow, And it's amazing. But then there's
- 6:15Speaker 1: karaoke and Paul Rudd gets up there on karaoke after
- 6:19Speaker 1: like everyone's doing like the practical jokers are saying like
- 6:21Speaker 1: Billy Joel, and then you've got some of the Sturday
- 6:23Speaker 1: Live folks they're singing Journey. Then Paul Rudd gets up
- 6:27Speaker 1: there and sings Lady in Red, Lad, I don't know
- 6:30Speaker 1: if you know, Lady and Red. Yeah, so earnest about
- 6:36Speaker 1: it and so like just like heartfelt that. Yeah, it was.
- 6:41Speaker 1: It's it's incredible. So we're up and people are drinking,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and it's like it's it's getting to be midnight. It's
- 6:46Speaker 1: getting to be one o'clock, it's getting to be two o'clock.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I'm hanging out with Will Forte, who I think mcgruber
- 6:51Speaker 1: is the funniest dude alive, and we're having it's two thirty,
- 6:55Speaker 1: it's three o'clock and now here's the crux of it.
- 6:58Speaker 1: At seven am, I agree to run a five K,
- 7:01Speaker 1: so I'm looking at the clock. Sean Evans also signed
- 7:04Speaker 1: up for it. We're like we're doing this. I'm like,
- 7:06Speaker 1: we're doing this. So at some point between Lady in
- 7:09Speaker 1: Red and then RTT Veach to General Manager of the
- 7:12Speaker 1: Chiefs nearly losing his mind over a magic trick involving,
- 7:16Speaker 1: you know, a dec of playing cards, I'm like, this
- 7:18Speaker 1: is all like in my head. The night comes to
- 7:20Speaker 1: an end and I have to wake up and run
- 7:23Speaker 1: this five K. So the alarm goes off at six am.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Right outside the hotel is the starting line, and I
- 7:29Speaker 1: look at it and I hear people getting ready. I'm like,
- 7:30Speaker 1: am I gonna do this? Am I not gonna do this?
- 7:32Speaker 1: And I thought back to what happened the night before.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I told my son Mel that I was gonna run
- 7:38Speaker 1: a five k, and I thought, I can't go back
- 7:42Speaker 1: home and say I had this amazing weekend. He asked me, well,
- 7:44Speaker 1: would you run the five k in? And me say, well,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I slept through it like it's just bad parenting her.
- 7:48Speaker 1: I can't do that. So I got out there. My
- 7:53Speaker 1: good buddy Brad g from the Chiefs, got my little
- 7:56Speaker 1: penny and my number, gave it to me. And then
- 7:59Speaker 1: sure enough, at six point fifty nine, I get a
- 8:01Speaker 1: text the thing is starting at seven Sean Evans, host
- 8:03Speaker 1: of hot Ones. It's like, I'm right here by the
- 8:05Speaker 1: porta pot If you want to run with me. I'm like,
- 8:08Speaker 1: he's up to and we do it. We run it.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I ran it in about thirty minutes. I think I
- 8:14Speaker 1: ran it in like twenty nine minutes. Was feeling grate.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Finished up the five K, and I'm like, all right,
- 8:19Speaker 1: I'm ready. This is the greatest you know, twenty four
- 8:22Speaker 1: hours ever. I'm hanging out with weird Al, I'm cutting
- 8:24Speaker 1: it up with Tech nine and I'm running a five
- 8:27Speaker 1: k like well, but the best part is still coming.
- 8:30Speaker 1: It's the trip to the hospital. And I know it
- 8:34Speaker 1: sounds really like heavy, and it sounds like such a
- 8:40Speaker 1: difficult thing, but we go and we visit in groups
- 8:45Speaker 1: at the bedside all of the patients who are staying
- 8:48Speaker 1: at Children's Mercy Hospital. It's an amazing place. It's it's
- 8:52Speaker 1: strictly pediatric cancer and it's kids and families from all
- 8:56Speaker 1: over who come in and try to get the best
- 8:58Speaker 1: treatment possible. And this event. Every proceed every dollar they make,
- 9:01Speaker 1: whether it be selling extra tickets for the softball game
- 9:05Speaker 1: or the event they do on Saturday night, it all
- 9:08Speaker 1: goes to Children's Mercy. And this year they opened the
- 9:11Speaker 1: Big Slick Auditorium, which is like a new addition in
- 9:15Speaker 1: a wing to the hospital that was named in honor
- 9:17Speaker 1: of a Big Slick For all the money that they've put
- 9:19Speaker 1: in and their contributions. And I'm not kidding, Aaron, it's
- 9:23Speaker 1: like selfishly, it's one of the greatest therapeutic things you
- 9:27Speaker 1: could possibly do is go visit a children's hospital, and
- 9:31Speaker 1: especially if you're someone who can potentially make a connection
- 9:35Speaker 1: with a kid, and whether you're volunteering or whatever. For us,
- 9:39Speaker 1: my group was Sean weird Al, who a lot of
- 9:43Speaker 1: the parents knew, but not many of the kids. And
- 9:46Speaker 1: then the magician Blake and you know, they come in.
- 9:49Speaker 1: They don't the kids seven eight years old. He might
- 9:52Speaker 1: know me from Good Morning Football, he might not. He
- 9:54Speaker 1: might know my voice whatever weird Al. The parents know
- 9:57Speaker 1: Sean Evans, they probably don't know from Hot Ones. But like,
- 10:00Speaker 1: if you tell him this is he does a show
- 10:02Speaker 1: with whatever. The magician Blake against Blake Vogt. Like I've
- 10:09Speaker 1: never seen a child light up the way they light
- 10:13Speaker 1: up from a magician's craftsmanship. He's doing card tricks that
- 10:20Speaker 1: I blow me away. But the kids are over the
- 10:24Speaker 1: moon and they love it. And it's just the feelings
- 10:28Speaker 1: I had in there. And I have a seven year
- 10:30Speaker 1: old son obviously, who knock on Wood is in great health.
- 10:34Speaker 1: You can't help as a parent or as anyone. Just
- 10:37Speaker 1: like put yourself in the shoes of the other parents,
- 10:39Speaker 1: or put yourself in the shoes of the kid and
- 10:40Speaker 1: realize for those few hours. Aunt Man is coming through
- 10:44Speaker 1: and is hanging with them. Been and Gayton from Stranger
- 10:50Speaker 1: Things are with us. They're coming through, and the kids
- 10:54Speaker 1: they love that show Robert Smigel's The Voice of Leo,
- 10:57Speaker 1: which is a huge hit movie on Netflix that all
- 10:59Speaker 1: the kids are watching animated. He's coming through and then
- 11:03Speaker 1: you've got musicians, You've got me and like these kids
- 11:08Speaker 1: they light up, and I just I get so emotional
- 11:11Speaker 1: thinking about it. But it's like the highlight of the
- 11:13Speaker 1: year for me, like to be able to co in
- 11:16Speaker 1: and make these kids and make these families days a
- 11:19Speaker 1: little better, which leads to the following few hours. I know,
- 11:24Speaker 1: it sounds like a travel log, like I'm Anthony Bourdain here.
- 11:28Speaker 1: One of Paul Rudd's college roommates is a guy named James,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and James owns a restaurant called Charbar, and it's one
- 11:38Speaker 1: of these hot barbecue spots in Kansas City and Charbar
- 11:41Speaker 1: has the best burn ends in Kansas City. It's one
- 11:42Speaker 1: of these places you wait online and all this stuff.
- 11:45Speaker 1: He threw out the offer, you know, if anyone wants
- 11:47Speaker 1: to go and have barbecue for lunch after the children's hospital,
- 11:51Speaker 1: Like we're getting a group together. We had the most random,
- 11:54Speaker 1: most hilarious crew. Richard Christy from The Howard Stern Show.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I don't know if you're a Stern listener, Aaron, but
- 12:01Speaker 1: Richard Christy is one of my favorite people on the show.
- 12:04Speaker 1: And he is an incredible human being with a his
- 12:08Speaker 1: sense of humor and his print calls and be his
- 12:10Speaker 1: knowledge of death metal, like he goes deep on death
- 12:13Speaker 1: metal and it's a drummer. So he's incredible. Richard Christy,
- 12:16Speaker 1: Jeff Ross, the roast Master, and then like the cast
- 12:19Speaker 1: and crew of Saturday Night Live, and then Blake who
- 12:23Speaker 1: he and I became fast friends, the magician. We all
- 12:25Speaker 1: go and we're eating barbecue and we got the meat
- 12:27Speaker 1: sweats and it's incredible and people are coming over and
- 12:30Speaker 1: they're saying hello, we're taking photos. But the evening is
- 12:34Speaker 1: where it all goes down. So they rent out the
- 12:36Speaker 1: t Mobile Center, they sell tickets and it's it's I
- 12:40Speaker 1: got to like witness, like incredible comedy moment. And this
- 12:46Speaker 1: was George Went who played Norm on Cheers. Okay, George Went,
- 12:53Speaker 1: Robert Smigel, all right, and then Jason Sudeikis, who was
- 12:58Speaker 1: playing Chris Farley's character, on Ozempic doing the Bears skit
- 13:05Speaker 1: from Saturday Night Live and O guess who joined them
- 13:08Speaker 1: Kelsey and Mahomes And it was hilarious, like you'd hear
- 13:13Speaker 1: that and you'd be like, why ruin that that bit.
- 13:15Speaker 1: It's the first time they've all done it together since
- 13:17Speaker 1: Farley's passing, and they were amazing in character, not on
- 13:22Speaker 1: startin Night Live, in front of this and the jokes
- 13:24Speaker 1: were hilarious, like they were people Magazine picked it up
- 13:28Speaker 1: out of context, but like sadekas As, Farley's character on
- 13:32Speaker 1: Ozempic is asking, is asking Travis Kelsey when he's gonna
- 13:35Speaker 1: make an honest woman out of Taylor Swift and I'm dying.
- 13:38Speaker 1: I'm like, it's tremendous, like this is great, and he's like,
- 13:41Speaker 1: you know, he's like, I know your kicker would approof
- 13:44Speaker 1: of that question, like hilarious jokes, like it was great,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and then Mahomes comes in and he's fantastic and they're
- 13:50Speaker 1: talking about how, you know, the sphere in Las Vegas
- 13:53Speaker 1: is great, but you know, Chicago's working on the quaff
- 13:56Speaker 1: and it's because thick as hair and there's gonna be
- 13:58Speaker 1: right in the middle of town and there's gonna be
- 14:00Speaker 1: concerts on it. They're awesome. Mahomes and Kelsey come roaring
- 14:04Speaker 1: out and like at this event, here's who we have.
- 14:07Speaker 1: We have stand up from Kumail help me with the
- 14:12Speaker 1: last night. Yeah, he was incredible and he's cool ash
- 14:15Speaker 1: like he's quiet, humble, awesome, all right, Kumail Fortune Feinster,
- 14:21Speaker 1: who's big on Netflix if you see any of this stuff,
- 14:25Speaker 1: like hilarious. Jeffrey Ross did an absolutely hilarious slash filthy
- 14:32Speaker 1: stand up routine in front of a crowd of Aaron's
- 14:37Speaker 1: and children. Pat is like, so Jeffrey Ross and amazing
- 14:42Speaker 1: three of them do stand up comedy. David Cook from
- 14:44Speaker 1: American Idol performs. Kevin Morby, I don't know his work before,
- 14:49Speaker 1: this incredible musician from Kansas City. He performs, and then
- 14:52Speaker 1: Cheryl Crowe performs as well, and she was unbelievable. Cheryl
- 14:57Speaker 1: crow who was leaving here then going and doing a
- 15:00Speaker 1: concert in Hawaii immediately after, like the life that she's
- 15:02Speaker 1: living still as a rock and Roll Hall of Famer
- 15:05Speaker 1: is the rock star line if it's so cool? But
- 15:08Speaker 1: then it comes to my moment in the show and
- 15:11Speaker 1: they asked us if we want to submit auction items
- 15:13Speaker 1: because these auction items can go for real money. There's
- 15:15Speaker 1: some big, big money people involved with this hospital, and
- 15:20Speaker 1: you know who am I. You know, a couple of
- 15:22Speaker 1: years ago, I submitted a cool one that you know,
- 15:25Speaker 1: you could pay to announce the Chief's Day three draft pick,
- 15:29Speaker 1: whether it be fourth, fifth, sixth, or seventh round at
- 15:32Speaker 1: the draft when it was in Kansas City. And I
- 15:34Speaker 1: did that with the NFL Events team and it was great.
- 15:36Speaker 1: The guy who won it, they said, Okay, you're gonna
- 15:38Speaker 1: do the seventh round pick. Well, Kansas City trades their
- 15:39Speaker 1: seventh round picks. She never got to do it, but
- 15:43Speaker 1: he got to hang backstage and got to be a
- 15:45Speaker 1: part of it and was like so happy that he
- 15:47Speaker 1: won that auction item. Great. Took a year off last
- 15:49Speaker 1: year because I was like, I have nothing. I don't know.
- 15:52Speaker 1: This year, I got ahead of it. I want to
- 15:55Speaker 1: thank Peter O'Reilly and Matt Shapiro, who work in the
- 15:59Speaker 1: NFL Events team. I reached out to them early on
- 16:02Speaker 1: and I'm like, guys, what can we provide that is
- 16:05Speaker 1: a really cool, unique experience that someone can't just buy.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And every year before Week one, you know, the Chiefs
- 16:13Speaker 1: already we know are hosting the Ravens. Every year before
- 16:15Speaker 1: Week one, they do a VIP tailgate. Now, it used
- 16:19Speaker 1: to be a concert, like Ed Sheeran did a concert
- 16:21Speaker 1: one year. I want to say the Chainsmokers might have
- 16:24Speaker 1: done a concert one year. They do this concert. Well,
- 16:27Speaker 1: this year they're not doing a concert, and I think
- 16:29Speaker 1: part of it is because there's also a game in
- 16:31Speaker 1: Brazil on Friday, and it's like, we're gonna make it
- 16:34Speaker 1: like tailgate week or kickoff week. But they're doing a
- 16:38Speaker 1: VIP dinner which is not open to the public. It's
- 16:40Speaker 1: like to certain you know, people that are partners with
- 16:43Speaker 1: the league and of course some league executives and I'm
- 16:45Speaker 1: sure people that are local to Kansas City and maybe Baltimore.
- 16:48Speaker 1: So we got tickets to that. We also got four
- 16:51Speaker 1: tickets to the Pro Bowl games, which sounds like it's
- 16:54Speaker 1: very cool. Now that alone is a nice item. It's
- 16:56Speaker 1: not going to blow anyone away, you know, but it's
- 16:58Speaker 1: it's pretty cool. It's there two really cool experiences, and
- 17:01Speaker 1: I'm so appreciative for that. I then went to Brett Veach,
- 17:03Speaker 1: the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, and I said, hey, look,
- 17:06Speaker 1: it's like, you know what this means to the town
- 17:08Speaker 1: and to the children's Marcy, what can you do, feachays,
- 17:10Speaker 1: how about I give my four seats in my suite
- 17:14Speaker 1: for week one where we're raising the banners. I'll give
- 17:17Speaker 1: those four tickets, so you get those four tickets, And
- 17:19Speaker 1: how abould I also give four pregame passes where you
- 17:22Speaker 1: can walk up and down the chief sideline as they're
- 17:24Speaker 1: raising the banners before week one. I'm like, that's amazing.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So now we've got this awesome item, this awesome item,
- 17:31Speaker 1: come to it. They're like, Peter, why don't you present
- 17:33Speaker 1: it on Saturday night? Like you could be the one
- 17:35Speaker 1: with the microphone. Great, so cool. As we're doing all that,
- 17:40Speaker 1: Veach the night before after a few drinks, you know,
- 17:43Speaker 1: comes up to me, He's like, I feel like I
- 17:45Speaker 1: can offer more. I'm like, Brett, you've done enough, Like
- 17:47Speaker 1: we're good. He's like, I feel like I can offer more.
- 17:49Speaker 1: He's like he had just flown in, like they flew
- 17:52Speaker 1: to the White House. They then flew back from the
- 17:54Speaker 1: White House, and Brett came immediately to like go drink
- 17:57Speaker 1: with Paul Rudd and Sidekis and be like up in
- 17:58Speaker 1: this like suite. So Veach is like, what if like
- 18:02Speaker 1: Travis and Patrick did something, And I'm like, no, totally,
- 18:05Speaker 1: that's great, like anything with those guys, like all right,
- 18:07Speaker 1: let me work on it. So then the night of
- 18:11Speaker 1: this bag appears in the green room and it's handed
- 18:14Speaker 1: to me and it's a game worn Kelsey jersey and
- 18:18Speaker 1: a game warn Mahomes jersey and I'm like what do
- 18:21Speaker 1: I do with these? And they're like, well, Brett said
- 18:23Speaker 1: to like get the guys to sign this and it'll
- 18:25Speaker 1: be part of the auction. And I'm like, all right,
- 18:26Speaker 1: that's cool. So we're doing the auction item and it's
- 18:29Speaker 1: like we're in it and stone Street's great and Wriggles great,
- 18:32Speaker 1: We're they're getting the crowd going and it kind of
- 18:34Speaker 1: lattaus out where the auctioneer is like, all right, for
- 18:36Speaker 1: fifty grand, you get this great package that the seats
- 18:38Speaker 1: and I'm looking into the crowd and it's kind of
- 18:40Speaker 1: tapering off, and then like out of like the heavens,
- 18:45Speaker 1: Mahomes and Kelsey come from backstage and like walk on
- 18:49Speaker 1: with me, and Mahomes and Kelsey are like, come on,
- 18:52Speaker 1: we could do better than this. We could do better this.
- 18:54Speaker 1: They're getting the crowd going and everyone's like, all right,
- 18:56Speaker 1: seventy five grand, eighty grand. And then I'm like, I'm like,
- 18:59Speaker 1: all right, the Pro Bowl guys, you know, thirty one
- 19:02Speaker 1: other teams, their best players are going to be there.
- 19:03Speaker 1: And then like Mahomes grabs the microphone, are like, we're
- 19:05Speaker 1: not going to the Pro Bowl, We're going to the
- 19:07Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Like it's like completely going, and everyone's like yeah,
- 19:11Speaker 1: So it's getting crazy. Then Stone Street has the idea of, hey,
- 19:16Speaker 1: let's break out these jerseys. Let's have the guys put
- 19:19Speaker 1: them on, and then let's have them personally sign them
- 19:23Speaker 1: for the winners. So we then, like a NASCAR team,
- 19:26Speaker 1: put the jerseys on Mahomes and Kelsey and they're up
- 19:30Speaker 1: there and they're getting the crowd going and the bidding
- 19:32Speaker 1: starts going nuts, and they're gonna sign it personally. Game
- 19:35Speaker 1: warn jerseys from the season before, and they're both in them,
- 19:38Speaker 1: and Mahomes is hilarious. He's like, you know, this is
- 19:40Speaker 1: my dad bod because it's so tight and his belly's
- 19:43Speaker 1: like hanging out, and then Kelsey's like it's I'm not
- 19:45Speaker 1: a dad, but this is my thirty five year old
- 19:47Speaker 1: bod and it's the same thing, and it's like snug whatever.
- 19:50Speaker 1: So it starts going and it's like seventy five hundred,
- 19:53Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty one aaron. The item goes for
- 19:56Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Quarter of a million dollars.
- 20:03Speaker 1: This thing goes for and the guy who wins it,
- 20:05Speaker 1: we bring the family right up there. They're posing for
- 20:08Speaker 1: photos with Kelsey and Mahomes. Kumel is right after me
- 20:12Speaker 1: and is like, I'm from Chicago. I've never been to
- 20:15Speaker 1: Kansas City, but apparently you pay a quarter million dollars
- 20:18Speaker 1: for shirts. It's like dying laughing, great tremendous night, and
- 20:25Speaker 1: we wrap it up. There's barbecue afterwards. So like my
- 20:28Speaker 1: stomach was in shambles the next morning. But I do
- 20:30Speaker 1: want to give you one last little nugget of maybe
- 20:33Speaker 1: the funniest thing I've ever seen in person and the
- 20:37Speaker 1: funniest clip I've ever seen on a phone. So we're
- 20:41Speaker 1: at a hotel and there's an indoor fountain in the
- 20:44Speaker 1: hotel and it's attached to a shopping mall in Kansas City.
- 20:46Speaker 1: So this mall and this thing is from the seventies,
- 20:49Speaker 1: like some of the guys who volunteer were like, I
- 20:51Speaker 1: had my prom photos there in the eighties, Like, that's
- 20:53Speaker 1: that fountain. It's probably disgusting. People put coins in it.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Who knows what fluids are in there. Jake Tapper from
- 21:01Speaker 1: CNN is part of the Weekend and he challenges Will Forte,
- 21:07Speaker 1: the comedian, one thousand dollars donation. He's I'll put one
- 21:11Speaker 1: thousand dollars donation to Big Slick if you swan dive
- 21:15Speaker 1: into that disgusting fountain. Will Forte proceeds to remove his shirt,
- 21:21Speaker 1: remove his shoes, go in with his shorts and socks
- 21:26Speaker 1: into a fountain that has probably not been washed in many,
- 21:30Speaker 1: many years. He not only goes underneath the water, he
- 21:34Speaker 1: takes and starts swimming laps, and then he sings James
- 21:37Speaker 1: Ingram's just Once while the fountain is drizzling water over
- 21:42Speaker 1: his head. I have this all on my phone. It's
- 21:44Speaker 1: the funniest two minutes you'll ever see. And it is
- 21:47Speaker 1: absolutely insane, And that is Big Slick in a nutshell.
- 21:52Speaker 1: You get the singing of just Once, Lady in Red
- 21:56Speaker 1: and then also you're raising four million dollars for a
- 22:00Speaker 1: hospital in Kansas City. I love the weekend. I'm so
- 22:02Speaker 1: honored to be a part of it, and I hope
- 22:04Speaker 1: I can continue to be a part of it. Thank
- 22:06Speaker 1: you to everyone who's involved. And Aaron, that was my weekend.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Sounds pretty good. I saw furiosa, but you know.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Also great, also great.
- 22:19Speaker 2: I spent the first six years out of college working
- 22:23Speaker 2: at a Schulden's hospital, and I know how yep, and
- 22:26Speaker 2: I know how important that is, especially working with I
- 22:30Speaker 2: was at Children's cancer center actually, and oh my god,
- 22:34Speaker 2: a lot of time I did a bunch of like
- 22:36Speaker 2: going to patient rooms playing music and like how important
- 22:40Speaker 2: that is to them, and like also shout out to
- 22:43Speaker 2: all the child life specialists and then nurses and doctors
- 22:47Speaker 2: everyone who works with.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Us, talking about just a noble work. Yeah, and it's
- 22:51Speaker 1: so heavy, and like I was talking to one of
- 22:54Speaker 1: the nurses and I'm like in my head, I'm like,
- 22:56Speaker 1: she puts her head down at night and goes to
- 22:57Speaker 1: sleep knowing she made a difference every single day. Like
- 23:01Speaker 1: that's the ultimate gift, you know.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, but yeah, I mean some awesome work that
- 23:07Speaker 2: they've done and amazing raising so much money for those kids.
- 23:11Speaker 1: And it's been a pipeline for this podcast. We've had
- 23:14Speaker 1: stone Street, We've had Rudd, We've had Sean Evans, we've
- 23:16Speaker 1: had Plenny and maybe we'll get Kelsey in my home.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Seems like this season we're going to need to do
- 23:22Speaker 2: a musical episode where like we just have a bunch
- 23:24Speaker 2: of guests.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Kevin Murby, does that name anything to you, Kevin, I've
- 23:28Speaker 1: heard the name. I don't know any of his music,
- 23:29Speaker 1: but my god, so he's an awesome dude, great musician.
- 23:34Speaker 1: And then I started going into a wormhole of his
- 23:36Speaker 1: music since I've been back, and it's like incredible. So
- 23:39Speaker 1: that's it. Picked that up, all right. So going from
- 23:43Speaker 1: tight end Travis Kelsey to another great tight end and
- 23:46Speaker 1: a friend of mine. Our guest this week is the
- 23:49Speaker 1: great Greg Olsen. Let's bring him on our guests this week.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Is one of my favorite people, not only in sports
- 24:01Speaker 1: media but just in general. We have the best time
- 24:04Speaker 1: when we talk, and we haven't in a while. We
- 24:06Speaker 1: had him on during the season, and since then he
- 24:08Speaker 1: has won Best Analyst at the Sports Ed means we're
- 24:11Speaker 1: not going to harp on that too much. He's too
- 24:13Speaker 1: humble for that. But let's bring in Greg Olsen, former
- 24:15Speaker 1: Carolina Panthers Legend, Chicago Bear Legend, and now TV Superstar.
- 24:19Speaker 1: W what's up Greg?
- 24:20Speaker 3: Somebody? How are you?
- 24:22Speaker 1: I'm doing awesome? I real quick on the Emmy. Just congratulations, man.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Like it's I appreciate it.
- 24:27Speaker 1: It's one of those deals where you don't you tell
- 24:29Speaker 1: yourself you don't need validation, and then I'm sure you
- 24:31Speaker 1: hear your name called and you look at your peers
- 24:33Speaker 1: and you say, for a second, I can appreciate us.
- 24:35Speaker 1: How cool it is it was.
- 24:37Speaker 4: I mean, anytime you're nominated, right, Chris collins Worth, Troy
- 24:40Speaker 4: aik Man, I mean John Smoltz, I mean Bill Raftury.
- 24:43Speaker 4: I mean, these guys are legends. They've been doing this
- 24:46Speaker 4: for a long time, and especially obviously in the NFL
- 24:49Speaker 4: circles with Troy and Chris. I mean they they called
- 24:52Speaker 4: my games when I was a rookie, you know, twenty
- 24:55Speaker 4: years ago.
- 24:55Speaker 3: So it's it's pretty cool, and listen it.
- 24:58Speaker 4: I had a guy to a teammate tell me this
- 25:01Speaker 4: a long time ago. He says, no matter how old
- 25:02Speaker 4: you get, you're never too cool for a pat, you know,
- 25:05Speaker 4: for an atta boy, you know, a pat on the back.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Or everyone likes to be told good job.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Everyone likes to have, you know, confirmation that the hard
- 25:12Speaker 4: work is paying off, whether you're a high school kid
- 25:14Speaker 4: or a forty year old adult. I think everyone likes it,
- 25:16Speaker 4: so listen. It was cool, it was fun, It was
- 25:19Speaker 4: a great experience. I had never been to the Emmys before.
- 25:21Speaker 4: I didn't go last year and told myself, you know,
- 25:23Speaker 4: the next time I was nominated, I would go. Me
- 25:25Speaker 4: and my wife had a great couple of days in
- 25:28Speaker 4: the city enjoying that, and.
- 25:29Speaker 3: It was awesome.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Who is the coolest person you met that you'd never
- 25:32Speaker 1: met before at the sportsmes?
- 25:35Speaker 4: Oh, that's a great question, you know, I met, you know,
- 25:37Speaker 4: it's it's super cool because you walk into the room obviously,
- 25:41Speaker 4: I'm sure you know, like you walk into the room.
- 25:43Speaker 1: The cocktail hour before.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Cocktail hour was great. My big regret is that we
- 25:46Speaker 4: didn't get to the cocktail hour early enough. We went,
- 25:49Speaker 4: we went for dinner at the hotel, and it always
- 25:50Speaker 4: takes longer to get everywhere in New York than you plan,
- 25:53Speaker 4: and I wish I would have had like another thirty
- 25:56Speaker 4: forty minutes of the cocktailer because you're just getting going,
- 25:58Speaker 4: you have a cocktail, you're shaking hands, you're seeing people
- 26:01Speaker 4: that you've either you've met before but you haven't seen
- 26:05Speaker 4: him in a while, or just people you've watched on TV. Right,
- 26:08Speaker 4: Ernie Johnson, Right, I've seen him a thousand times doing
- 26:11Speaker 4: NBA games, obviously college basketball and everything they do, and
- 26:14Speaker 4: that show's awesome, and yeah, you have a chance to
- 26:18Speaker 4: shake his hand and ask him how he was doing
- 26:20Speaker 4: and learn. So, you know, just people that you see
- 26:22Speaker 4: on TV all the time, you feel like you know them,
- 26:25Speaker 4: but you never have actually been in the same room
- 26:27Speaker 4: as them. So it was a lot of really cool,
- 26:29Speaker 4: interesting people there. Some I had met a bunch and others,
- 26:33Speaker 4: you know, like Ernie for the first time, so it
- 26:35Speaker 4: was it was super cool.
- 26:37Speaker 1: I'll never forget. We got nominated for Good Morning Football
- 26:39Speaker 1: couple of years in a row, so I got to
- 26:40Speaker 1: go to a few and we're in the cocktailer and
- 26:42Speaker 1: it's actually the year we ended up winning, and we're
- 26:44Speaker 1: staying there and I get a tap on the shoulder
- 26:45Speaker 1: from this really tall guy and at first it's jarring
- 26:47Speaker 1: because I did not know how tall he was in person.
- 26:49Speaker 1: And he's like, hey, I know, we're competition and we're nominated,
- 26:52Speaker 1: and you guys are nominated, but I am just such
- 26:54Speaker 1: a huge fan of your work. And I looked up
- 26:56Speaker 1: and it was Scott Van Pelt. So for all the
- 26:58Speaker 1: years that we've been doing this, I'd never seen him
- 27:00Speaker 1: in person, and I'd never worked with him, and I'd
- 27:03Speaker 1: never actually been in the room with him. So I
- 27:05Speaker 1: was I mean, even me who's been in this for
- 27:08Speaker 1: a while, like to see one of these guys in
- 27:10Speaker 1: persons like, Oh, you're like a real life person, You're
- 27:11Speaker 1: not just on my TV.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Yeah, well it's funny along those lines. I'm in the
- 27:15Speaker 4: bathroom like they're they're whisking all of us like out
- 27:18Speaker 4: of the cocktail hour and trying to get us into
- 27:20Speaker 4: the auditorium the you know, the theater or whatever. And
- 27:23Speaker 4: I'm coming out of the bathroom. There's like a line
- 27:25Speaker 4: of a handful of guys and I thankfully wash my
- 27:27Speaker 4: hands or everybody's watching you, so you wash your hands.
- 27:30Speaker 4: And as I'm walking out, I see Jay Wright. And
- 27:33Speaker 4: I had never met Jay Wright before, but he was there.
- 27:36Speaker 3: But now you're like.
- 27:37Speaker 4: In the bathroom, so like the most like it is
- 27:41Speaker 4: it weird for anyone who has ever met someone or
- 27:44Speaker 4: like had someone say hello to them in the bathroom,
- 27:46Speaker 4: like you just got done taking a leak.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know you're meeting Jay.
- 27:50Speaker 4: Wright in like an auditorium bathroom as a bunch of
- 27:53Speaker 4: guys who are taking a leak before the show starts.
- 27:55Speaker 3: So it's it's you know, all that stuff is very unpredictable.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Did you have any say in what they submitted? Like
- 28:03Speaker 1: Good Morning Football gets a submission, but I didn't see
- 28:06Speaker 1: what like the final cut was, Like I am a
- 28:09Speaker 1: control freak with my own stuff. This is your nay,
- 28:11Speaker 1: like I was as an individual. I had nothing to
- 28:13Speaker 1: do with it, but like, do you have final cut
- 28:15Speaker 1: of like what they submit to the Emmys?
- 28:18Speaker 4: They did, So it's it's funny you asked that because
- 28:19Speaker 4: my first year I did not, right. So you know
- 28:22Speaker 4: when Jacob Olman, who kind of heads up a lot
- 28:24Speaker 4: of the production teams or whatnot, he called me two
- 28:26Speaker 4: years ago, you know I, well, I guess my first
- 28:29Speaker 4: year was like emerging break out Star, emerging whatever it's called.
- 28:33Speaker 3: I didn't win.
- 28:35Speaker 4: Then my year two, same category, emerging break you know
- 28:39Speaker 4: whatever did win. This never had seen my reels for
- 28:42Speaker 4: those I had no idea what they what they submitted
- 28:45Speaker 4: or anything. But then this year it was a new category.
- 28:48Speaker 4: You know, this is like no more like emerging, like
- 28:50Speaker 4: you have to be in with all the big boys.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Now this is the emerged.
- 28:53Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, you've already have the merged. And and I
- 28:58Speaker 4: did actually see it. So Jacob was cool enough. He shared,
- 29:01Speaker 4: they have a whole team at Fox. They do an
- 29:03Speaker 4: unbelievable days. They are incredible, and I I watched it
- 29:07Speaker 4: and I was like, if I was watching that, that guy's pretty, you.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Know, like that guy's good.
- 29:13Speaker 4: You know, he does a great job putting that together.
- 29:15Speaker 4: So it was cool, and so I did see it.
- 29:19Speaker 4: I don't think I gave them any feedback. I don't
- 29:21Speaker 4: think I said do this that I don't Sometimes I
- 29:23Speaker 4: don't remember.
- 29:24Speaker 3: What I said.
- 29:24Speaker 4: If you told me what was the best thing you
- 29:27Speaker 4: said in the NFC Championship game, I'd be like, I
- 29:28Speaker 4: don't remember who played, you know what?
- 29:30Speaker 3: I like, I don't know.
- 29:31Speaker 4: I just make it up as they go. But they
- 29:34Speaker 4: obviously did a good job and very fortunate to uh
- 29:37Speaker 4: let me hear your name called.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Does the last year's Super Bowl? Did that qualify for
- 29:42Speaker 1: this year's tape?
- 29:44Speaker 4: That's a really good question. My assumption is it ends
- 29:49Speaker 4: this season, So my guests would be the playoffs of
- 29:52Speaker 4: this past season, probably the Packers versus I think.
- 29:56Speaker 3: My Super Bowl.
- 29:58Speaker 4: Yeah, my super Bowl I called went into like when
- 30:01Speaker 4: I was like emerging, like the two years ago.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Yeah ago, you were awesome in that Niners Lions game.
- 30:08Speaker 1: But I remember the Packers Niners game, right, you were
- 30:13Speaker 1: on that call, alls.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Yeah, we had Packers Niners in the divisional round.
- 30:16Speaker 1: And Party made all those big clutch plays and you
- 30:19Speaker 1: were you were fantastic in that final drive. And I'm
- 30:21Speaker 1: assuming that's probably what Jacob was baking of.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Yeah. I think it was a lot of playoff stuff.
- 30:26Speaker 4: And you know, those are the moments, right, those are
- 30:29Speaker 4: the moments everybody wants you.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Well, you guys didn't have a good game the first
- 30:32Speaker 1: ten weeks of the season. You guys had blowout each
- 30:34Speaker 1: every week.
- 30:35Speaker 4: We have this funny like group like group text thread
- 30:38Speaker 4: of you know, production guys and Aaron and Tom and
- 30:40Speaker 4: Kevin and myself and the guys in the truck and
- 30:43Speaker 4: researchers and is like this big group chain. And every
- 30:46Speaker 4: week Jarrett, the research guy at Fox who's unbelievable what
- 30:50Speaker 4: he does. Jarrett would send hey, just updating America's game
- 30:55Speaker 4: of the week. Average margin of victories twenty two point
- 30:58Speaker 4: three points. We have not We've had one game within
- 31:01Speaker 4: fourteen points in the fourth quarter.
- 31:03Speaker 3: We're like, thanks, Jarrett, We're well you know, we're well aware.
- 31:06Speaker 2: You know.
- 31:06Speaker 4: It was just blowout after blowout after blowout, and then
- 31:10Speaker 4: playoffs came and it caught fire and we just had
- 31:13Speaker 4: game after game after game. The NFC Championship was awesome.
- 31:17Speaker 4: So the playoffs made up for what was a very
- 31:20Speaker 4: weird regular season because we didn't have a ton of
- 31:22Speaker 4: like thrillers.
- 31:24Speaker 3: We had won early.
- 31:25Speaker 4: We had Detroit lost to Seattle in Week two in
- 31:28Speaker 4: an overtime game that was awesome, and we had a
- 31:31Speaker 4: couple here and there. We just didn't have a lot
- 31:33Speaker 4: of drama at the end. So the playoffs definitely made
- 31:35Speaker 4: up for it.
- 31:36Speaker 1: McCaffrey got this new deal. I saw you liked his
- 31:40Speaker 1: video on Instagram. Now I'm a new Instagram user. I
- 31:42Speaker 1: can see who likes what. You were his teammate. What
- 31:45Speaker 1: was your best McCaffrey story when he first walked through
- 31:47Speaker 1: those doors.
- 31:48Speaker 3: McCaffrey's the best. I'm going to his wedding here in
- 31:50Speaker 3: a couple of weeks, I texted him last night.
- 31:52Speaker 4: I texted him last night after I saw the deal
- 31:54Speaker 4: come through, and I was like, dude, I don't know
- 31:56Speaker 4: if you know what you're in store for, but your
- 31:58Speaker 4: bar bill totally just don't even look at it because
- 32:02Speaker 4: we're about to blow your wedding. This tab we're going
- 32:05Speaker 4: to run up on you. All the guys are coming
- 32:07Speaker 4: to town for It is gonna be.
- 32:09Speaker 1: An a f So it's not gonna be one of
- 32:10Speaker 1: those weddings where they give you out a coupon and
- 32:12Speaker 1: you get one free drink.
- 32:14Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 32:15Speaker 4: I'm just assuming it's not gonna be I think everything
- 32:17Speaker 4: him and Olivia are gonna do.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Is pretty high, high high brow.
- 32:20Speaker 4: But even if it's not, we're opening up the bar
- 32:23Speaker 4: like this is non negotiable, and McCaffrey's getting the bill.
- 32:27Speaker 4: So we got like all of our old teammates, a
- 32:29Speaker 4: bunch of our buddies. We're all going out there, both
- 32:31Speaker 4: the Niners guys and Panther guys. So we're gonna get together.
- 32:34Speaker 4: We haven't been together in you know, probably a couple
- 32:37Speaker 4: of years, you know, since we've all kind of gone
- 32:38Speaker 4: our separate ways.
- 32:39Speaker 3: We're in a million you.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Know, who's the crew, like, I love this, So it's
- 32:42Speaker 1: it's obviously yes.
- 32:44Speaker 4: Yeah, Keithley's flying up, Ryan Khalil, Jonathan Stewart, I'm talking
- 32:49Speaker 4: like Panther guys, Jonathan Sue.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Who else is in our group?
- 32:53Speaker 4: J J.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Janssen who's still playing, and you're.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Like a long snapper.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Greg Van Roten we call him g VR is a
- 33:00Speaker 4: really good buddy of oys offensive line and played for
- 33:02Speaker 4: the Raiders last year.
- 33:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:05Speaker 4: So and then I think like Kittle and Uscheck and
- 33:08Speaker 4: you know, all the forty nine er guys. So it's
- 33:10Speaker 4: kind of a cross between the old Panther guys when
- 33:13Speaker 4: Christian was young and now just guys throughout the league,
- 33:16Speaker 4: and it's we are we are much looking. It's it's
- 33:20Speaker 4: here in like three weeks, so it's the end of
- 33:21Speaker 4: the month, so we're we're pretty excited about it.
- 33:23Speaker 1: What's your memory of when it collected that? Like, oh,
- 33:26Speaker 1: this guy's for real.
- 33:28Speaker 3: So my first ever interaction with McCaffrey. You're gonna love this.
- 33:31Speaker 4: So he was not allowed to come to our off
- 33:34Speaker 4: season training because certain colleges that aren't on semesters, they're
- 33:38Speaker 4: on like yes, Northwest, it's like super super smart schools
- 33:44Speaker 4: trimester or quarters or system or whatever they call it.
- 33:48Speaker 4: And I don't know if the rule is still the same.
- 33:50Speaker 3: I haven't followed it.
- 33:51Speaker 4: But when I was playing schools that were on the
- 33:54Speaker 4: quarters or the trimester system, because school at those universities
- 33:58Speaker 4: was still in session in the summer, even if those
- 34:01Speaker 4: kids were done with school, graduate, whatever it was, you
- 34:04Speaker 4: were not allowed to be at the NFL practices. It
- 34:08Speaker 4: was like a super obscure situation. So McCaffrey was losing
- 34:12Speaker 4: his mind. He couldn't come to like a mini camp.
- 34:15Speaker 4: He couldn't come to the first maybe couple weeks of OTAs.
- 34:18Speaker 4: But I met him for the first time at Ron
- 34:20Speaker 4: Rivera's charity event he ran, like a bowling event that
- 34:23Speaker 4: Christian was in town for. And I'll never forget, Like
- 34:26Speaker 4: I'm just over there and we're just shooting the catching
- 34:28Speaker 4: up And obviously I'd watched him play in college and
- 34:31Speaker 4: knew what a study was. He He did not throw
- 34:35Speaker 4: one ball, he did not hit a pin. He sat
- 34:38Speaker 4: next to me and was like, how do you guys
- 34:40Speaker 4: do pass protection? How do you guys do the and
- 34:43Speaker 4: like he was Me and him had like an hour
- 34:46Speaker 4: long conversation on past protection, our formation, our route tree.
- 34:50Speaker 4: He's like, it's killing me that I'm not at you know, spring.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Ot everything is a veteran you want to hear right,
- 34:57Speaker 1: Like that's I'm like.
- 34:58Speaker 3: I'm like this guy. I knew he was a stud.
- 35:00Speaker 4: I watched him obviously at eleven o'clock Eastern every weekend
- 35:03Speaker 4: when Stanford was when he was running all over everybody,
- 35:06Speaker 4: and he wanted nothing to do with the event.
- 35:08Speaker 3: He wanted nothing to do with bowling, he wanted nothing.
- 35:10Speaker 4: To do with walking around shaking hands as our top
- 35:12Speaker 4: ten first round pick. Like he was killing me about
- 35:18Speaker 4: just what is he missing? Installs? What should I know?
- 35:21Speaker 4: How do we do protections? How do we set the mics?
- 35:23Speaker 4: Where do I scan a lot formation alignments? And I
- 35:26Speaker 4: was like, this dude's just different. Like there's a lot
- 35:29Speaker 4: of guys like, hey, he's a ballplayer. Like this guy
- 35:31Speaker 4: just truly loves ball. He's like in the dictionary, you
- 35:35Speaker 4: look that up is McCaffrey, Like he is wired, very different,
- 35:39Speaker 4: he is all in.
- 35:42Speaker 3: He's just a very he acted as a rookie.
- 35:45Speaker 4: How most guys don't figure out taking care of their body, training, nutrition, diet,
- 35:49Speaker 4: all that he was doing that as an incoming rookie.
- 35:52Speaker 4: You know, takes some guys eight ten years to really
- 35:54Speaker 4: figure out what that means to be a pro. So
- 35:57Speaker 4: he was wise beyond his years. Obviously physically talented, but
- 36:00Speaker 4: just his approach and mindset and everything he does is
- 36:04Speaker 4: what makes him him. And then he happens to also
- 36:07Speaker 4: be fast and strong and all that, but that's all
- 36:10Speaker 4: secondary for him.
- 36:12Speaker 1: You know. It's it's amazing this forty nine ers team
- 36:14Speaker 1: in that era, and you've called so many big games
- 36:16Speaker 1: over the last few years, including an NFC Championship game
- 36:19Speaker 1: that was cut short, including a NFC Championship game where
- 36:22Speaker 1: they did get over the hump and get back to
- 36:24Speaker 1: the super Bowl. It's one of these deals where like,
- 36:27Speaker 1: I have to think those guys to go through another offseason,
- 36:29Speaker 1: and you know Kittle so well from tight End University,
- 36:31Speaker 1: and obviously yust Check has been the legal is sounding
- 36:33Speaker 1: like it has to just kill these guys that they
- 36:35Speaker 1: haven't gotten a chip yet.
- 36:37Speaker 4: Oh, I mean I lost one, so I kind of
- 36:41Speaker 4: know what it's like walking out as the confetti falls
- 36:43Speaker 4: and the other team's colors and you go back into
- 36:45Speaker 4: the reality of the locker room that it's over. Right,
- 36:48Speaker 4: there's no best of three, best of five, will go
- 36:50Speaker 4: get him next time like it is over the finality
- 36:54Speaker 4: of the end of a postseason in the NFL is
- 36:56Speaker 4: unlike any.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Other sport because you get one shot. Right.
- 37:00Speaker 4: So, I've lost an NFC championship game, won an NFC
- 37:03Speaker 4: championship game, lost to Super Bowl, never got back to
- 37:06Speaker 4: win another Super Bowl like it just so for these
- 37:09Speaker 4: guys in this core, well, Christian making it for the
- 37:12Speaker 4: first time, but you know Kittle and those guys made it,
- 37:15Speaker 4: you know, just a few years ago. And to get
- 37:17Speaker 4: there twice and come up short twice, especially this year,
- 37:20Speaker 4: obviously it was a tough ending. Like it's hard, man.
- 37:24Speaker 4: I think it just shows how many things have to
- 37:27Speaker 4: go your way to not only make a Super Bowl,
- 37:29Speaker 4: but the chips to fall your way and the breaks
- 37:31Speaker 4: to go your way to win a game, especially in
- 37:34Speaker 4: an era where Mahomes and Kelsey and Andy Reid. You know,
- 37:37Speaker 4: that's a that's a history. You know, that's like winning
- 37:39Speaker 4: when Brady and the Patriots like to steal one out
- 37:42Speaker 4: of that era. You got to have a lot of
- 37:44Speaker 4: things go your way. Yeah, maybe Brady got knocked out
- 37:46Speaker 4: in the AFC championship. That's what happened our year, and
- 37:49Speaker 4: we couldn't take advantage of it against Denver. But like
- 37:51Speaker 4: that's kind of what Kansas City is now. And you know,
- 37:54Speaker 4: San Francisco, Kyle Shanahan might have two Super Bowls if
- 37:57Speaker 4: it wasn't for Andy Reid, hadn't Patrick Mahomes and vice versas.
- 37:59Speaker 4: So sometimes you're the You're the product of your era
- 38:03Speaker 4: and your time. But I think those guys still have
- 38:05Speaker 4: a long run way. They got a cheap quarterback.
- 38:08Speaker 3: Yeah no, I mean like.
- 38:09Speaker 4: Payment wise obviously, but I'm saying they got a ride.
- 38:12Speaker 4: They got another year. Maybe they can continue to pay
- 38:15Speaker 4: All these guys on defense take advantage of party, playing
- 38:18Speaker 4: for free in essence, and take advantage of this window.
- 38:28Speaker 1: One of the things I love about you. We'll get
- 38:29Speaker 1: together at like a Fox event, and we'll talk NFL
- 38:32Speaker 1: for about three seconds, like we just did, and then
- 38:34Speaker 1: we'll get right into youth sports. I've got a seven
- 38:36Speaker 1: year old son we're just starting. He's hardcore basketball. This
- 38:40Speaker 1: thing is called the Brooklyn Basketball Academy, and it is
- 38:44Speaker 1: like there's eight teams in the league. We have practices
- 38:46Speaker 1: like I don't coach because they have they don't have
- 38:49Speaker 1: bother coaches. They have like actual guys who are like
- 38:52Speaker 1: recent you know, college basketball players and when they coach,
- 38:54Speaker 1: and JJ Reddick overseas a lot of the league. And
- 38:58Speaker 1: then there's like random, yeah, random Brooklyn dads you'd love,
- 39:01Speaker 1: like Brian Westbrook's kids in the league. Like I see
- 39:04Speaker 1: him at the games. Like it's just it's random. It's good,
- 39:06Speaker 1: it's awesome, And my son loves it. And I could
- 39:10Speaker 1: see myself jumping in head first and diving in. And
- 39:14Speaker 1: I know how passionate you are and you've taken it
- 39:16Speaker 1: to the next level talk about youth sports and like
- 39:19Speaker 1: where you see this thing going?
- 39:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, and it's easy, right, especially when you
- 39:24Speaker 4: see your kids. It's easy as a parent when you
- 39:26Speaker 4: see your kid, your son or daughter really fall into something.
- 39:31Speaker 4: In your case, it's basketball or baseball. And my daughter's recently,
- 39:35Speaker 4: just within the last six to ten months, gotten into
- 39:38Speaker 4: you girls basketball, and she's like really embracing it and
- 39:42Speaker 4: wanting to improve and practicing. Like as a parent, it's
- 39:46Speaker 4: very easy to see once the light goes on for
- 39:48Speaker 4: them and it clicks, it's easy to find yourself saying okay,
- 39:53Speaker 4: there's never enough we need more practices, we need more games,
- 39:55Speaker 4: we need more scrimmages, we need more training. Who's the
- 39:57Speaker 4: best trainer, who's your kid working with? Like it's easy
- 40:01Speaker 4: once you see it for them to just like I
- 40:03Speaker 4: will give you every resource, every possible going on.
- 40:06Speaker 1: I want you to be your bestball whenever you want
- 40:08Speaker 1: to be.
- 40:08Speaker 4: Yeah, of course, And again I think it's in we
- 40:11Speaker 4: We're all doing it out of good intentions. So your
- 40:15Speaker 4: child tells you they really want to pursue something, you
- 40:17Speaker 4: can see them actively enjoying it, pursuing it, like improving,
- 40:22Speaker 4: like they're not just saying it. Like you can tell
- 40:25Speaker 4: a kid who's in there or who just got dropped
- 40:27Speaker 4: off by his parents from practice, Like you can tell
- 40:29Speaker 4: the difference. And then as a parent, your first instinct is,
- 40:33Speaker 4: I will get you every bit of support, training, lessons,
- 40:36Speaker 4: team whatever to say what you want to do. And
- 40:39Speaker 4: it's a very fine line. And some of that I've
- 40:42Speaker 4: learned the hard way, right I've I was the dad
- 40:44Speaker 4: was eight year old baseball and I'm like, this is
- 40:47Speaker 4: this is our life. We're not going on family vacations.
- 40:49Speaker 4: We got to get ready for the North Carolina cal
- 40:52Speaker 4: Ripkens State championship. And by the way, they're eight, Yeah,
- 40:58Speaker 4: they're rising third graders whatever its second grade. So like
- 41:03Speaker 4: when you go through it, it's just so easy to
- 41:05Speaker 4: get caught up in it. And I've again learned some
- 41:08Speaker 4: lessons the hard way. Something's good, something's bad, and really
- 41:11Speaker 4: look at it. Now that we approach youth sports as
- 41:14Speaker 4: one simple goal in our house, I should say two
- 41:17Speaker 4: separate goals in our house. A. In my opinion, there
- 41:20Speaker 4: is no greater vehicle for young children to learn real
- 41:23Speaker 4: life experiences than youth sports. Playing with kids you might
- 41:28Speaker 4: not come from the same backgrounds coaches you may or
- 41:30Speaker 4: may not just agree with a coach is really hard
- 41:33Speaker 4: on you. You don't play a lot, you lost playing time,
- 41:36Speaker 4: you're on the depth chart, you're coming off the bench,
- 41:38Speaker 4: you're the sixth man whatever.
- 41:40Speaker 3: That is that same that's.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Not just your friends from class, kids from other schools.
- 41:46Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, maybe you're a little uncomfortable in the beginning.
- 41:49Speaker 4: You got to come out of your shell. Like there's
- 41:51Speaker 4: so many great life lessons that you can create through
- 41:53Speaker 4: youth sports, and to me, that's number one.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Across the board.
- 41:56Speaker 4: And then the second part of that approach is can
- 41:59Speaker 4: you go one day play for your middle school, and
- 42:02Speaker 4: then one day your high school and have a really
- 42:05Speaker 4: fun school experience on at least one, if not multiple teams.
- 42:10Speaker 4: If you check those boxes, your sports journey is.
- 42:14Speaker 3: A success in my book, Like, that's how.
- 42:16Speaker 4: We approach it. That's what we harp on our kids.
- 42:19Speaker 4: Anything beyond that is gravy.
- 42:22Speaker 1: I love this, love this. And how did you I mean,
- 42:27Speaker 1: because you said you originally were traveling the East coast
- 42:29Speaker 1: and did you have a moment or did you have
- 42:31Speaker 1: a governor in your Like wait a second, we're let's
- 42:34Speaker 1: let's take it take a step back. Is that because
- 42:37Speaker 1: to me, I don't know where the gay I know myself.
- 42:40Speaker 1: If my son wants to do it, all go to
- 42:41Speaker 1: all ends to be like, do you want to go
- 42:43Speaker 1: to New Jersey and play in a tournament for an
- 42:45Speaker 1: half hour? We'll drive four hours. I could see that happening.
- 42:48Speaker 4: Oh, and don't get me wrong, we still do it
- 42:50Speaker 4: right So my older son, We're for both my sons,
- 42:53Speaker 4: my twelve year old and my eleven year old, both
- 42:56Speaker 4: of their teams. I coach my eleven year old. My
- 42:58Speaker 4: my other son plays for a different organization. Both their teams.
- 43:01Speaker 4: We're going to spend a week in Myrtle Beach from
- 43:05Speaker 4: Tuesday to Sunday next week, and we'll play between the
- 43:08Speaker 4: two of them. They'll play sixteen seventeen baseball games between
- 43:13Speaker 4: two separate teams, I mean two boys, two separate teams,
- 43:16Speaker 4: Like we're in. Then a week after that, we're going
- 43:18Speaker 4: down to East Cobb, which is down outside of Atlanta.
- 43:21Speaker 4: We're going to play in a five day National Perfect
- 43:23Speaker 4: Game Baseball tournament with my older son, and we're going
- 43:26Speaker 4: to Mississippi. My daughter's basketball team went to Greensboro. My son,
- 43:30Speaker 4: my younger son's baseball team is going to play a
- 43:32Speaker 4: tournament in Charleston in July. Like, it's all I sitting
- 43:35Speaker 4: here saying, like, oh, we just take it easy. I mean,
- 43:38Speaker 4: we try to match the enthusiasm of the kid. We
- 43:43Speaker 4: try to match it. If the kids really in and
- 43:45Speaker 4: the parents are dragging them back, that's probably not fair.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 4: If the kid's half ass in it and the parents
- 43:52Speaker 4: are all in, that's also a bad scenario.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Totally.
- 43:55Speaker 4: It's like, we try our best to match our enthusiasm.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Are we will drive to the ends of the earth.
- 44:02Speaker 4: We tell our kids all the time, we will do
- 44:04Speaker 4: whatever you want. To do, but you to do it,
- 44:07Speaker 4: and you've got to do it with everything in your power.
- 44:09Speaker 4: You've got to be willing to go to every practice,
- 44:11Speaker 4: every game. I don't want the second this looks like
- 44:14Speaker 4: we're doing it against your will.
- 44:15Speaker 3: We're done.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I love it, And.
- 44:18Speaker 3: It's easier said than done. It's east said than done.
- 44:22Speaker 1: I watched some of your stuff. You were at the
- 44:24Speaker 1: Johns Hopkins University last month at the Project Play summit,
- 44:28Speaker 1: and you were discussing this. And that's why I'm ring
- 44:30Speaker 1: because you had you know, parents, coaches, olympians, medical and
- 44:35Speaker 1: health experts, and you're doing this and now you've taken
- 44:39Speaker 1: it to like the media thing, talk about your youth
- 44:41Speaker 1: inc podcasts and what you're working on, because I think
- 44:43Speaker 1: there's an untapped market for parents like me who are
- 44:46Speaker 1: going into this thing blind, and then also parents like
- 44:49Speaker 1: you who you're looking for maybe peers and others that
- 44:52Speaker 1: you can kind of bounce ideas off of. In a
- 44:54Speaker 1: sea of all of these private coaches and all of
- 44:57Speaker 1: these travel teams and all of the money that is
- 44:59Speaker 1: out there of people trying to suck you dry for
- 45:02Speaker 1: these youth sports.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Yeah, no question, So exactly right.
- 45:05Speaker 4: So to years ago, I was out dinner with a
- 45:09Speaker 4: couple of my buddies, Ryan Khalil, Vince Vaughn, Humblebragg, both
- 45:13Speaker 4: those guys are really good buddies of mine, and I
- 45:16Speaker 4: was pitching them this idea.
- 45:17Speaker 3: I was like, Hey, we've been.
- 45:17Speaker 4: Approached by a couple of different podcast platforms and they're like,
- 45:20Speaker 4: what ideas does Greg want to talk about?
- 45:22Speaker 3: And I was like, I don't know. I don't know
- 45:23Speaker 3: if I want.
- 45:24Speaker 4: To just like break down Sunday's game or totally how
- 45:27Speaker 4: to run routes is a tight end, Like there's more
- 45:30Speaker 4: to it, right, I want to do something I'm really into,
- 45:32Speaker 4: And I'm like, well, the thing I do the most
- 45:35Speaker 4: is coach and be a youth sports parent, Like I
- 45:38Speaker 4: do it before I came into this. I'm in my
- 45:41Speaker 4: Charlotte Christian which is where my kids go to school
- 45:44Speaker 4: T shirt because we have eight to eleven am middle
- 45:47Speaker 4: school football workouts Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday all summer, all summer long.
- 45:52Speaker 4: Like we're living this youth sports world. So anyway, so
- 45:55Speaker 4: I'm like, the thing I do the most is youth sports.
- 45:57Speaker 4: The thing that my wife and I stress the most
- 45:59Speaker 4: about is are we doing it correctly. Every dinner we
- 46:02Speaker 4: go to with friends, after five seconds, it's the kid play.
- 46:07Speaker 4: Everyone has the same conversation across the whole country. So
- 46:09Speaker 4: I'm like, if I'm a guy who's lived in his
- 46:12Speaker 4: whole life, I grew up the son of a high
- 46:13Speaker 4: school football coach, I played and made a career out
- 46:16Speaker 4: of it, and now it's come full circle that I'm
- 46:18Speaker 4: the dad slash youth coach. And there's a lot of
- 46:20Speaker 4: times that I'm doing it wrong. There's a lot of
- 46:22Speaker 4: times that I look back on a game or a
- 46:24Speaker 4: practice and saying I needed to be better. I needed
- 46:26Speaker 4: to handle that situation better. My kid, your kid, whatever.
- 46:30Speaker 4: There's a pod here, there's an idea. So that is
- 46:32Speaker 4: the birth of you Think. So it was originally a
- 46:35Speaker 4: standalone podcast and we had forty five episodes of conversations
- 46:39Speaker 4: with Olympians, coaches, mental health experts, sports performance name it
- 46:44Speaker 4: across the spectrum, current former professional athletes and everybody, and
- 46:48Speaker 4: really about the best practices of what their lessons were
- 46:51Speaker 4: growing up in sport, how they apply it now going forward,
- 46:54Speaker 4: and really some cool conversations.
- 46:56Speaker 3: From there.
- 46:57Speaker 4: We said, okay, hold on, this is bigger than just
- 46:59Speaker 4: me hosting a singular podcast. So we have now launched
- 47:03Speaker 4: you Think Reimagined, which is a two prong to two
- 47:07Speaker 4: different sides of the company. One is a content platform
- 47:10Speaker 4: we are in We have talks and contracts with all
- 47:13Speaker 4: different types of like they're going to head up their
- 47:16Speaker 4: vertical football, basketball, girl soccer, volleyball, softball, and they're going
- 47:20Speaker 4: to be like their ambassadors for their vertical their sport
- 47:24Speaker 4: and they're going to produce content from how to make
- 47:26Speaker 4: practice plans to how to teach a girl how to
- 47:29Speaker 4: feel the ground ball to shoot a basket, and.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Not just like House of Highlights videos of these kids like.
- 47:35Speaker 4: Grass roots foundational. I got to take over my kids
- 47:39Speaker 4: eight year old basketball practice? How do I get started?
- 47:42Speaker 4: I want to teach my seven year old kid how
- 47:43Speaker 4: to make a lefty layup. But I also want to
- 47:45Speaker 4: be able to drive home in the car with my
- 47:47Speaker 4: kid after he goes over three with three strikeouts and
- 47:49Speaker 4: not really blow this as a dad, which we've all
- 47:52Speaker 4: had our moments that we're probably not our most proud of,
- 47:55Speaker 4: right and all of those conversations are going to live.
- 47:58Speaker 4: All of this information that the education, the coaching, the
- 48:01Speaker 4: mental health, the sports performance, everything around the atmosphere of
- 48:05Speaker 4: youth sports is going to live on a singular platform
- 48:08Speaker 4: called youth Youth dot Inc. Is going to be the site,
- 48:11Speaker 4: and then on the other side of that, there's going
- 48:14Speaker 4: to be a commercial e commerce platform. We have a
- 48:17Speaker 4: really cool partner, Ryan Bass, who's a partner of ours
- 48:19Speaker 4: founding this, who came from fanatics, who really understands the
- 48:22Speaker 4: e commerce retail idea, and he understands how bad that
- 48:26Speaker 4: landscape looks right now. To get this T shirt made
- 48:29Speaker 4: by your kids team takes six months. So there's going
- 48:33Speaker 4: to be e commerce play that's only going to serve
- 48:35Speaker 4: the youth sports performance, the youth sports environment, and then
- 48:37Speaker 4: also the media content company which will serve boys, girls
- 48:43Speaker 4: across the landscape of all things youth sports, and just
- 48:46Speaker 4: continue to further conversations we're having right now, which are
- 48:50Speaker 4: going on all around the country.
- 48:51Speaker 1: All the time. It's every conversation. Like my buddy Adam,
- 48:55Speaker 1: he played lacrosse in high school and then didn't play
- 48:58Speaker 1: in college. His son is I think third grade and
- 49:02Speaker 1: is like one of the best lacrosse players in all
- 49:04Speaker 1: of Long Island, and that sounds like a pipeline to Harvard.
- 49:09Speaker 1: John's topkin but like, how do you keep the love
- 49:12Speaker 1: for the like there's all these different hurdles, Like, Okay,
- 49:14Speaker 1: so he's an outstanding player in third grade, what do
- 49:16Speaker 1: you do from here to that college scholarship offer? That's
- 49:18Speaker 1: the question. That's the bridge, right.
- 49:21Speaker 4: Well, that's and that's and I think that the cart
- 49:23Speaker 4: before the horse is what's happening in a lot of
- 49:26Speaker 4: different families and households. And I don't blame people, right,
- 49:29Speaker 4: It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of
- 49:32Speaker 4: having the best fourth grader, the best fifth grader, the
- 49:34Speaker 4: best eighth grader, whatever that timeline is. But the thing
- 49:38Speaker 4: everyone has to remember, if the only goal of your
- 49:42Speaker 4: kid waking up at seven am on Saturday mornings and
- 49:45Speaker 4: driving an hour for a soccer tournament or a cross
- 49:47Speaker 4: tournament or a football game or whatever it is. If
- 49:49Speaker 4: the only reason we're taking our kids and doing all
- 49:52Speaker 4: of this rat race every single week is so that
- 49:55Speaker 4: they play beyond the high school level, every family should
- 49:59Speaker 4: quit doing.
- 50:00Speaker 3: It right now. It's not worth it good, it's.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Not worth it the seventy variables.
- 50:07Speaker 4: If that's the only objective, you should just save your time,
- 50:11Speaker 4: save your energy, and go on summer vacation because the
- 50:14Speaker 4: odds of it happening there's one school on average. Now,
- 50:19Speaker 4: back to what we said earlier, if the idea is
- 50:22Speaker 4: to get the journey, yeahs.
- 50:25Speaker 1: And that's where my friend's coming from, Like he's like,
- 50:27Speaker 1: I'll do anything. I'll drive it at Philadelphia for a
- 50:29Speaker 1: tournament because the kid loves it and he's making great
- 50:31Speaker 1: monks like it's awesome. Yeah.
- 50:33Speaker 4: And if that kid never plays a minute of college lacrosse,
- 50:38Speaker 4: but he has a great high school and junior high
- 50:40Speaker 4: and high school career.
- 50:42Speaker 3: That's not a failure.
- 50:43Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 50:43Speaker 3: That's the dream. The dream is the journey.
- 50:47Speaker 4: And if you maximize that journey and you put in
- 50:50Speaker 4: the work and you don't miss a practice, and you
- 50:52Speaker 4: grind and you deal with failure, adversity, make the team
- 50:55Speaker 4: get cut, whatever that ups and downs roller coaster of
- 50:59Speaker 4: your childhood is to begin with. If it's the same
- 51:01Speaker 4: in sports, and you come out as a high school senior,
- 51:04Speaker 4: confident and strong, and you know, hey, I've been through
- 51:06Speaker 4: a lot in these last five years.
- 51:08Speaker 3: Through sports through school.
- 51:09Speaker 4: I'm prepared now to go to college and just be
- 51:11Speaker 4: a normal citizen and a normal contributor to society.
- 51:16Speaker 3: Mission accomplished and those.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Lessons will carry with you throughout your life.
- 51:20Speaker 4: The problem is that is not how most I don't
- 51:24Speaker 4: want to say most. That is not how all families
- 51:27Speaker 4: view the youth sports path.
- 51:29Speaker 3: And that's why it's getting very scary interesting.
- 51:31Speaker 1: We could do we could do a whole podcast platform
- 51:34Speaker 1: based on this, and you are all right, I want
- 51:36Speaker 1: to hit before we go to really cool things. The
- 51:39Speaker 1: first thing is tight End University. You guys have been
- 51:41Speaker 1: doing this for years. You've got sponsors attached to it,
- 51:44Speaker 1: and I truly think it's one of the coolest things
- 51:46Speaker 1: that we have in our off season schedule. It's become
- 51:48Speaker 1: one of those milestones. It's like Combine Pro Days, free Agency,
- 51:53Speaker 1: Draft schedule, release, tight End University. When is it this week?
- 51:57Speaker 4: Year?
- 51:57Speaker 1: It is in Nashville again. Are we going back to
- 51:59Speaker 1: Nashville and tearing up Broadway like we do every year?
- 52:02Speaker 3: We are?
- 52:03Speaker 4: We're going back to Nashville again. That's where that's where
- 52:05Speaker 4: it started. That's we're Kittle, who really was like the
- 52:08Speaker 4: brain behind the whole thing. It really started very casually.
- 52:12Speaker 4: I had just retired that spring. Kittle sent me a text.
- 52:16Speaker 4: We had gotten to know each other. We have the
- 52:17Speaker 4: same marketing group, you know, the guys at Rubicon that
- 52:19Speaker 4: you know Raskin and those guys.
- 52:21Speaker 3: So I'd gotten to you.
- 52:22Speaker 4: Know, George, just my last couple of years in the league,
- 52:24Speaker 4: and he texted me, hey, man, congrats, great career. Enjoy retirement.
- 52:28Speaker 4: If by any chance you ever come down to Nashville,
- 52:31Speaker 4: there's like five or six tight Ends. You know, Hockinson's
- 52:34Speaker 4: down there and you know a bunch of guys if
- 52:36Speaker 4: you ever come down, we'd love to pick your brain,
- 52:39Speaker 4: come work out with us and just have like a day.
- 52:41Speaker 3: And I was like, yeah, it sounds great. And then
- 52:44Speaker 3: like we're like, let's build this.
- 52:45Speaker 4: And it got to like ten guys twenty and we're like, okay,
- 52:49Speaker 4: this is now bigger than just like a bunch of
- 52:51Speaker 4: guys come in, work out in the morning, and then
- 52:53Speaker 4: go drink beers on Broadway and have a great time.
- 52:55Speaker 3: Like there's more to this, right.
- 52:56Speaker 4: So we're now in year four and last year we
- 53:02Speaker 4: had like eighty eighty five.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Guys and that oh yeah, grow a great tight Ends
- 53:08Speaker 1: or what or college.
- 53:09Speaker 3: Only only professional only professional guys?
- 53:12Speaker 4: Oh my god, yeah, we had yeah, so we had
- 53:15Speaker 4: you know, so so Kelsey Travis Kelcey, Kittle and myself.
- 53:19Speaker 4: The three of us kind of own and operate the
- 53:21Speaker 4: whole kind of entity of TU. But yeah, we had
- 53:24Speaker 4: we had over eighty guys last year, and we do
- 53:26Speaker 4: it at Vanderbilt. They give us great access to their
- 53:29Speaker 4: team meeting rooms, their facilities, their turf, their indoor outdoor
- 53:32Speaker 4: grass turf, whatever we need. And yeah, it's you know,
- 53:36Speaker 4: it's it's a fun mixture. The guys are just off
- 53:38Speaker 4: of Ota, so there's just enough work. Right, there's classroom,
- 53:42Speaker 4: there's work, there's field. You know, we're getting real work.
- 53:45Speaker 4: And then there's also a lot of like fellowship and camaraderie.
- 53:47Speaker 4: On Monday night when we get there, there's a welcome party.
- 53:50Speaker 4: We're having beers, we hang out.
- 53:52Speaker 3: Welcome everybody, Welcome the new guys.
- 53:54Speaker 4: Right, So I'm a young undrafted or maybe I was
- 53:56Speaker 4: a young first round pick, fifth round pick, whoever I am,
- 53:59Speaker 4: I'm Brock Bowers or I'm an undrafted free agent that
- 54:02Speaker 4: I'm hoping to make the roster in two months.
- 54:05Speaker 3: I walk into this hotel.
- 54:07Speaker 4: I walk in and I got Kittle, Kelsey, Darren Waller,
- 54:12Speaker 4: Mark Andrews.
- 54:14Speaker 3: I got the best.
- 54:15Speaker 4: Guys you've watched in the last couple of years with
- 54:19Speaker 4: open arms. We're taking you know, and and the camaraderie
- 54:22Speaker 4: of the position and the ability.
- 54:24Speaker 1: I love this.
- 54:25Speaker 3: It's super cool. Right.
- 54:26Speaker 4: So that's Monday night. Then Tuesday is our workday. Tuesday
- 54:29Speaker 4: we're at the We're at the facility. We do a
- 54:31Speaker 4: couple hours of indoor classroom. There's presentations. Kelsey's given presentations
- 54:35Speaker 4: with film clips on route running, and we had undressed coverages,
- 54:39Speaker 4: and Kittle's talking run game, and we've had Dallas Clark
- 54:42Speaker 4: coming years past. Gronkowski did a you know, run after
- 54:45Speaker 4: catch tape about mentality. I mean, over the years, we've
- 54:47Speaker 4: had some really cool presenters and then we go out
- 54:50Speaker 4: on the field and we do like actual routes. Last
- 54:53Speaker 4: year Zach Wilson came as a quarterback, Josh Allen, Trey Lance.
- 54:58Speaker 3: I mean, we got some we got some quarterbacks that
- 55:00Speaker 3: come and throw it around.
- 55:01Speaker 4: So and then that night this year we have like
- 55:04Speaker 4: a big concert a bit, you know, obviously we're in
- 55:06Speaker 4: we got some live music and a concert. So it's
- 55:09Speaker 4: a it's a perfect balance of fun and fellowship. But
- 55:11Speaker 4: also when it's time to work, we work, like we
- 55:13Speaker 4: always tell the guys, you're not coming in for a
- 55:15Speaker 4: three day trip to Nashville. We're coming into work and
- 55:18Speaker 4: get better and then we're also going to have a
- 55:21Speaker 4: lot of fun when the work is over. But it's
- 55:22Speaker 4: got to be in that order to make the event work,
- 55:24Speaker 4: and so far it's been very successful.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Ah.
- 55:27Speaker 1: I love that. Is there a text chain with all
- 55:29Speaker 1: that tight ends in the league that just is like
- 55:30Speaker 1: an ongoing inside jokes and like all.
- 55:33Speaker 3: You know that there's not Well, if there is, I'm
- 55:35Speaker 3: not on it. If there is, I'm not on it.
- 55:36Speaker 3: They call me Dad.
- 55:38Speaker 4: They call me Dad because I'm the one that's like
- 55:41Speaker 4: pulling everyone like okay.
- 55:42Speaker 1: Like come on, get this guy, this guy, Yeah.
- 55:45Speaker 4: Come over here, like stay on track, thank our sponsors.
- 55:49Speaker 4: Kelsey's on top of the bar. We're like you got
- 55:51Speaker 4: to thank but like, you know, come on. But it's
- 55:54Speaker 4: awesome man. But you know what, I think the coolest
- 55:57Speaker 4: part of all of it is, it doesn't matter what
- 56:02Speaker 4: the next step of your career is. Right, you've got
- 56:04Speaker 4: undrafted rookies that are just hoping to make a practice
- 56:07Speaker 4: squad or an active roster. You've got practice squad guys
- 56:10Speaker 4: coming back for year two or three who are hoping
- 56:11Speaker 4: to make the opening day fifty three. You got backups
- 56:14Speaker 4: that want to be starters, starters that want to be
- 56:16Speaker 4: Pro bowlers, guys that want whatever that next tier is.
- 56:20Speaker 4: But when these young guys come in and they line
- 56:22Speaker 4: up the run routes on Tuesday day one of field work,
- 56:25Speaker 4: the guy at the front of the line is Travis
- 56:27Speaker 4: Kelcey and George Kittle and last year Darren Waller and
- 56:30Speaker 4: Mark Andrews and down the line, and they are full
- 56:34Speaker 4: speed running routes. They could big time everyone and be like,
- 56:38Speaker 4: I'm Travis Kelcey, I don't need to run routes, you're
- 56:40Speaker 4: seventeen fat. But they're the front of the line demonstrating
- 56:45Speaker 4: full sweat, full sweat lather, working like they're not just
- 56:49Speaker 4: there to check the box. They're there setting the standard.
- 56:52Speaker 4: And if those guys can do it, nobody else in
- 56:55Speaker 4: the place has an excuse that they're not full speed,
- 56:57Speaker 4: that they're not taking this as a real practice.
- 56:59Speaker 3: So when those guys set.
- 57:01Speaker 4: The tone the way they do, it's just easy to
- 57:03Speaker 4: control everybody else. Because you say you want to be
- 57:06Speaker 4: then you're getting a front row seat. Just do do
- 57:09Speaker 4: that and go that hard, that fast, anything less than that,
- 57:13Speaker 4: you've got no shot. You're getting a look at what
- 57:16Speaker 4: the best practice, like firsthand.
- 57:19Speaker 1: I would I would like to your thoughts on this.
- 57:21Speaker 1: So I've known Kelsey for years in a media way
- 57:24Speaker 1: and then more personally through this big slick event that
- 57:27Speaker 1: I do in Kansas City that I just got done with. Now,
- 57:29Speaker 1: I had known Kelsey for years. We've always had great interactions.
- 57:31Speaker 1: He I've done multiple interviews on Fox for him for
- 57:34Speaker 1: you know, the pregame show. All this stuff starts dating
- 57:37Speaker 1: Taylor Swift. And obviously I haven't seen him since I
- 57:40Speaker 1: did a couple of their games. At their games, he says,
- 57:42Speaker 1: what's up? Like I said the AFC Championship game, we
- 57:43Speaker 1: talked at midfield, but like I didn't know. I was
- 57:45Speaker 1: with him this past weekend in Kansas City. He's the
- 57:48Speaker 1: same Travis Kelcey as he was before dating Taylor Swift.
- 57:52Speaker 1: And I mean, so cool, so good to everybody looks
- 57:57Speaker 1: you in the eye, asks how your family's doing. Like
- 57:59Speaker 1: I was so happy to see that all of this
- 58:02Speaker 1: super stardom for the past twelve months has not changed
- 58:05Speaker 1: him one bit.
- 58:06Speaker 4: Well you want you want to hear It's so funny
- 58:08Speaker 4: that you say that because you're spot on, and Travis
- 58:10Speaker 4: is one of my favorite dudes and one.
- 58:13Speaker 1: I would think that maybe this is the year. He says,
- 58:15Speaker 1: you know what, I love tight End University. But like
- 58:18Speaker 1: I've got to be or I got to.
- 58:20Speaker 4: Be in I'm in Tokyo wherever. No, he he made
- 58:24Speaker 4: it a point. Hey, I'm committed to this. I mean,
- 58:27Speaker 4: he's obviously a key draw, key role. He's one of
- 58:30Speaker 4: the you know, the three of us kind of control
- 58:32Speaker 4: it and run it, and you know, obviously his involvement
- 58:34Speaker 4: goes a long way, and the credibility and whatnot. But
- 58:37Speaker 4: just more back to you just talking about him as
- 58:38Speaker 4: like a person and just staying kind of He's always
- 58:41Speaker 4: been who he is. He's the most fun guy to
- 58:43Speaker 4: be around when it's time to have fun. He's the
- 58:47Speaker 4: hardest running routes, the fastest, sweating cleed dirt when it's
- 58:51Speaker 4: time to work. But the coolest thing about him is
- 58:54Speaker 4: And it's so funny you say that, because yesterday I
- 58:56Speaker 4: posted an Instagram pick my my. My younger son celebrated
- 59:00Speaker 4: his three years of his heart transplant. They called him Heartniversaries,
- 59:03Speaker 4: so like kids that have transplants, in his case heart transplant.
- 59:07Speaker 4: They celebrate those kind of like a second birthday kind
- 59:10Speaker 4: of thing. It's like a tradition in the transplant world.
- 59:12Speaker 4: So we celebrated that. So June fourth was his three
- 59:15Speaker 4: year anniversary of his transplant. First comment on I showed
- 59:20Speaker 4: my kid, I screenshoted it. First comment on my Instagram
- 59:23Speaker 4: post Travis Kelcey, way to go TJ. You're the man
- 59:28Speaker 4: or you know whatever he said. I mean he could
- 59:31Speaker 4: have double clicked it and just kept swipe in. But
- 59:33Speaker 4: like three years ago, we had TEU right the day
- 59:36Speaker 4: when TJ got out of the hospital, so he had
- 59:38Speaker 4: his June fourth, he had his heart transplant, and then
- 59:41Speaker 4: like two weeks later was the inaugural TEU.
- 59:44Speaker 3: Kelsey's there.
- 59:45Speaker 4: All the tight ends are there are little saying that
- 59:47Speaker 4: summer that everybody in town wore was play for TJ.
- 59:50Speaker 4: And that was like the saying and the kids that bracelets.
- 59:53Speaker 4: I got pictures of Travis kelce running around at TEU,
- 59:56Speaker 4: George Kittle, all these guys play for TJ t shirts
- 59:59Speaker 4: on and now three years later he's the first one.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: Way to go TJ. My man. Hope to see it.
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: You know, he didn't have to do that and when
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: I show your when you show your eleven year old
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: kid that.
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: It's been, it's highlighted, highlighted life.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Hey, speaking of TJ, I know you've got a really
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: special weekend up ahead. What do you got going on
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: in the Carolina?
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: Yeah, so yeah, it's super cool. I can't wait to
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: get you down dude, Trays you got to come to this.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: So we have a place outside of Charleston called in
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: called Key Island. They've played the PGA Championship there a
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: couple of times at the Ocean Course, like a real
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: prominent course down there. So we spend a lot of
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: our summer, a lot of our holidays. It's about four
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: hours from Charlotte, and so we are our foundation called
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: the Hardest Jar. We'd always served the Charlotte Community Levine
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: Children's Hospital, where TJ got all of his care. We
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: fortunately have been able to grow and really build our
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: program here in Charlotte. And for a second location, we
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: now have partnered and brought our program to MUSC Children's Hospital,
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: which is the largest children's hospital in South Carolina. So
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: Levine Children's in North Carolina, MUSC Children's in South Carolina.
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: They're the two bigs like cardiac trauma centers that unfortunately,
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: if your kid ever needed like serious serious medical care,
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: those are the centers that you would go to in
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: this Carolina region. So we were having our third annual
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: Pewa Island Hardest Yard Golf event. Guys flying from all
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: over the country. It's it's this upcoming Sunday and Monday,
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: so June ninth and tenth, and we play golf, we
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: have dinners, we have a welcome concert. You know a
