- 0:00Welcome into the Scene Project songwriter showcase here at the Midway Saloon in beautiful
- 0:05Saint Paul, Minnesota.
- 0:06With me now is Mark Joseph.
- 0:08Mark, welcome to the show, brother.
- 0:09Thank you.
- 0:10Thanks for having me.
- 0:11Yep.
- 0:11Man, it's a pleasure to have you.
- 0:13Hasn't been that long since we've seen each other.
- 0:15We ran into each other out in Deadwood A Few Few Months ago now.
- 0:18But Yeah.
- 0:20What have you been up to?
- 0:21You know, just playing shows and running around and making music and trying to stay out of
- 0:25jail.
- 0:26Yeah.
- 0:26Yeah.
- 0:27I've actually been better at that lately too.
- 0:29Oh, boy.
- 0:30Good for you.
- 0:30Yeah.
- 0:31Good for you.
- 0:31No.
- 0:32It's been good, man.
- 0:32It's been a very busy year for us.
- 0:33We're promoting the Palisade Peach record and touring all over creation and wherever they'll
- 0:38have us.
- 0:39Spent a little time in Mexico this year, weren't you?
- 0:41Yeah.
- 0:41We just played Cabo a few weeks ago, and, yeah, we're just up in Lutzen last last well, this
- 0:47weekend, Grand Marais and whatnot.
- 0:49And where else have we been?
- 0:50Everywhere.
- 0:52Every
- 0:52yeah.
- 0:53Where have we been?
- 0:53Yeah.
- 0:54Yeah.
- 0:54It's been a good year, man.
- 0:55We've been real busy.
- 0:56That's awesome, man.
- 0:57Well, I'm just so proud of you.
- 0:58I know you may not remember, but 2018, I just got out of prison, and my my friend booked me
- 1:04for a show after the Deadwood Jam.
- 1:06The headliner that weekend was the big woo.
- 1:09Yeah.
- 1:09And you guys came over and jammed with us, jammed with my dad, and we got to meet the
- 1:13crew.
- 1:13And it was really it was a really great time.
- 1:16Unfortunately, at that time, I wasn't well versed in who Mark Joseph was, and I should
- 1:21have taken more of an opportunity to to play some more songs with you then.
- 1:25But here we are now, six years later, almost to the day, and, we get to do it anyway, man.
- 1:30So Yeah, man.
- 1:31I'm very honored to have you on here.
- 1:33Thank you.
- 1:33For those that don't really know you, I mean, why don't you give them a little the highlight
- 1:37reel of the last, you know, thirty years of making music?
- 1:40Okay.
- 1:41I'm gonna try to keep it quick because it's possible.
- 1:43But, my name is Mark Joseph.
- 1:45I grew up in Northfield, Minnesota, and I've been playing music professionally for twenty
- 1:49one years on the road.
- 1:51I saw BB King play guitar when I was 10 years old at the Minnesota State Fair, and it changed
- 1:56my life forever.
- 1:57The blues are the cornerstone of my musical, experience and, the music that speaks to me.
- 2:04And, so, yeah, at 10, I started playing guitar, with intention, and, you know, and, it was
- 2:1002/2003 I went full time in music.
- 2:13And, you know, I've been very blessed to have a have a career doing it.
- 2:16It's it's not been easy.
- 2:18It's a lot of hard work.
- 2:20But it's the life that I'm was born to live and and and a path I was born to walk.
- 2:25And I'm blessed to be able to do it for a living and raising three kids doing it.
- 2:29And we're still going.
- 2:30I'm a member of the Big Woo for fourteen years now.
- 2:33I tour all over the world playing my music.
- 2:37I'm about to in 2025, I'll release my fifth full length LP.
- 2:41And, yeah, we're just we're just rocking, rolling down the road.
- 2:44You know?
- 2:45Yeah, man.
- 2:45Oh, it's beautiful.
- 2:46And our conversation, you know, a little while back really inspired me.
- 2:52And something that you hit on a lot is just kinda being true to yourself, walking your
- 2:56path.
- 2:57Right?
- 2:57And we kind of alluded to it with this podcast because this thing is all new.
- 3:01This idea is something that that's Yeah.
- 3:03It's newly formed, and there's not people out there doing what we're doing.
- 3:08Yes, people have podcasts, but people aren't out there, you know, supporting songwriters and
- 3:13putting other people out and doing that.
- 3:15So everything that we touch in every situation this day, this is brand new, not just to us,
- 3:21but really to the world.
- 3:23You know?
- 3:23And you really gave me a lot of confidence to come up here and to know that the Minnesota
- 3:28Minneapolis music scene was going to embrace this.
- 3:31And we really were very happy to find find a home here at the Midway Saloon.
- 3:36And I'm sure this is a room you've played under three or four different names over the years.
- 3:40And
- 3:41You know?
- 3:42Truth be told, I haven't played in this room for twenty years.
- 3:45Really?
- 3:45It was it was called Christian's Big V Saloon, or I don't if it's
- 3:50a saloon or not.
- 3:51It was called Big V's back then.
- 3:52Was a
- 3:53punk rock bar.
- 3:54Yeah.
- 3:54And it was it was rough.
- 3:57Well, I played it, man.
- 3:58So it's cool.
- 3:58I've done done some nice with it.
- 4:00Midway Saloon.
- 4:01It's great in here.
- 4:01Yeah.
- 4:02Well, and they're supporting a lot of original music, which is what we're here to share today.
- 4:06Why don't you why don't you introduce us to your music and play us a song?
- 4:10You got it.
- 4:10You got it.
- 4:11We'll start off with the title track of my current record.
- 4:14It's called Palisade Peach.
- 4:43Risky.
- 4:44Not quite out of retail.
- 4:51Well, I love you, baby.
- 4:55And I don't mind that you're the boss.
- 4:58No.
- 4:59I don't mind that you're the boss.
- 5:01Well, I love you, baby.
- 5:05I don't mind that you're the boss.
- 5:08I don't mind that you're the boss Alright.
- 5:45Come on.
- 5:48Yeah.
- 5:48Well, gotta be a keeper.
- 5:52Finest thing I ever seen.
- 5:54Finest thing that I ever did see.
- 5:58I got me a keeper, the finest thing I ever seen.
- 6:04Finest thing, baby, bonafide you a reindeer because it's always good to pop us.
- 6:10Oh, hoo hoo.
- 6:11And she treats me like a cane.
- 6:14Yeah, she does.
- 6:15Oh, well, now, baby, loving you is a treetail.
- 7:11Yes, sir.
- 7:12I do.
- 7:14Oh, Mark.
- 7:15You're easy to love, brother.
- 7:16Easy to love.
- 7:17Thank you.
- 7:18It's good stuff, man.
- 7:20You've been doing it a long time.
- 7:22Do you ever feel the love for it fade?
- 7:24No.
- 7:25No.
- 7:26It's just the hours in the van and all the setbacks of pursuing something you love.
- 7:37It's just like any other business.
- 7:38You run an entrepreneur.
- 7:41Things happen.
- 7:43Robots come up.
- 7:44You know?
- 7:44It's always money.
- 7:46Money is the thing.
- 7:47Right?
- 7:47So you're always trying to navigate that part of it, whether it's investing in your next
- 7:52project or figuring out where you should spend.
- 7:56Should I, should I buy, you know, another 300 vinyl, or should I replace the brake pads in my
- 8:02van, or should I you know, it's like all that stuff.
- 8:04That's the that's the stuff that gets, tiresome, and that goes for any, job you do.
- 8:09But the love of the music is always there.
- 8:12I love to write.
- 8:13I love to just sit and play my guitar.
- 8:15You know?
- 8:16And we made a documentary about the Big Woo some years ago, and the great Charlie Parr did
- 8:24an interview for us.
- 8:26And in that interview, at the end of it, he said something very profound.
- 8:28And in his own way, which is kind of very long form and involves a lot of stuttering and kind
- 8:34of like starting, stop and starting, because that's who Charlie Parr is.
- 8:37But he got the point is, he said, man, if all the money dries up and all the and the people
- 8:43weren't coming to your shows anymore, and it just you know, it was just you and your guitar
- 8:47and your buddies and whatever.
- 8:49So they you if you would you still do it?
- 8:52Would you still go play?
- 8:53And if the answer is yes, he goes, well, that's then you're on the right track.
- 8:56And, you know, and that's I still truly love what I do every day.
- 9:00I can't wait to pick up my guitar and sing.
- 9:03The joy, the joy in the music, and I'm I'm sort of, reborn in that every every time I play
- 9:10because that's my connection to to God and to the spirit world, and and I, you know, I feel I
- 9:19feel truly myself in that space.
- 9:23And so every time I do it, I'm, like, I'm happy to be there.
- 9:26I'm blessed to be there, and I'm I'm grateful.
- 9:29And that makes it possible to push through all the roadblocks and to keep going over and under
- 9:34and through and and blowing up.
- 9:36And yeah.
- 9:36Yeah.
- 9:37You leave it all on stage, and don't, you know, don't take anything personal and just keep
- 9:41moving down the road.
- 9:42You know?
- 9:43No.
- 9:43And don't take it for granted either.
- 9:44Don't take it
- 9:45for granted.
- 9:45Think Gratitude of gratitude
- 9:47I think it would have been very easy for you to do that at points in your career, Mark.
- 9:50I mean, as as long as you've been at it, you know, the different modicums of success that
- 9:55you've experienced, right, whether it's with the Big Woo or, you know, know, playing music
- 9:59festivals for a bunch of hippies or, you know, coming in and playing the blues for, you know,
- 10:04a small handful of people here at the Midway Saloon is you gotta find that love for it, and
- 10:09you gotta stick to that.
- 10:10Right?
- 10:10You gotta stay focused on that.
- 10:12Yeah.
- 10:12And, you know, religion of gratitude every day.
- 10:16I mean, if you take things for granted, they're it's you're straightened out pretty quick.
- 10:20So, you know, it's good.
- 10:21Always be humble.
- 10:22Always be a good neighbor and be kind to others, you know, and just be thankful for what
- 10:27we got.
- 10:27If we're here breathing and we're hanging out like this on a Sunday, we've got a lot.
- 10:31In fact, we've got it all.
- 10:32Because if I if I offered you a million dollars, right, you'd be like, sweet.
- 10:38A million dollars?
- 10:38That'd be great.
- 10:39But if you can't wake up tomorrow, you wouldn't take it.
- 10:42Right?
- 10:42Because you're a rich man.
- 10:43Your life's worth much more than that too.
- 10:45And that would go for $10,000,000 or $50,000,000 or $100,000,000 So you're all
- 10:48millionaires already, including myself.
- 10:52I feel like there's a song in that too.
- 10:53Did you already write it?
- 10:56Yeah.
- 10:56It's it's I'm working on
- 10:57it.
- 10:58Yeah.
- 10:59Well, and you're working on a new project.
- 11:00You said you got a new LP coming out in 2025.
- 11:03Yeah.
- 11:04Well, what's the new record gonna be like?
- 11:05Because Palisade Peach is a kick ass record.
- 11:07I recommend everybody if you haven't listened to it yet, you gotta you gotta do it back back
- 11:11to front, front to back.
- 11:12It's a great album, man.
- 11:14Thank
- 11:14you.
- 11:14I just grew to the whole thing a few weeks ago when we were getting ready to chat.
- 11:18What what's the next one?
- 11:20I know you kinda have some themes that you're working on and different stories that you're
- 11:23trying to tell now.
- 11:24Yeah.
- 11:24The the new record is a it's sort of a new concept, one that I haven't done to this degree
- 11:30yet.
- 11:31The whole record is written about a character from the South, from the Deep South, who is a
- 11:36leader of the Dixie Mafia back in the sixties and seventies.
- 11:39And I happened to catch his life story on this podcast during the COVID period.
- 11:44And it really moved me.
- 11:46And I started writing songs about it because it was just stranger than fiction.
- 11:50This guy's life was crazy.
- 11:51And he's one of the it's one of these very complicated American stories where, know,
- 11:58America, we like our bloody history and celebrated all these people, right, like the
- 12:04Jesse James and the John Dillingers and people who on paper are really bad dudes and killed
- 12:09people and did really horrible things.
- 12:11On the other hand, they're celebrated and respected by their communities to this very
- 12:16day.
- 12:17Right or wrong, you know?
- 12:19And I'm a history guy, so like I ran after it and I wrote this whole record about this
- 12:23individual's life, and it tells a story.
- 12:25I I actually went down to Georgia and met their family, and I got the blessing from them to
- 12:29write the record.
- 12:31And it's all true stories about this guy's life and everything from he was a kind of
- 12:37notoriously famous, like, ladies man and a party guy and well liked and loved by everybody
- 12:43that met him.
- 12:44But if you crossed him, you know, they're gonna dig a a hole by the in the red clay, you know,
- 12:50by the river and stuff like that.
- 12:52Like, they didn't mess around.
- 12:53You know, it was really dangerous people and crazy stuff.
- 12:56And he ended up going to federal prison for forty years and was on death row and got a got
- 13:00his execution date commuted by the governor hours before he was supposed to be executed.
- 13:06He found Jesus.
- 13:07He took him out of federal prison against all laws.
- 13:11You know, this guy, sheriff Earl Lee, risked his whole career to bring him out of federal
- 13:16prison to be baptized in the middle of the night.
- 13:18And just the stuff is pretty amazing and and moving.
- 13:22You know?
- 13:22Yeah.
- 13:22And so yeah.
- 13:23So I made a whole record about it.
- 13:24It's currently called the Baddest Man in Georgia.
- 13:26It'll come out in spring probably.
- 13:28Yeah.
- 13:28Would you mind sharing one of the songs off the new one?
- 13:31Yeah.
- 13:31We'll play the Baddest Man in Georgia.
- 13:32Let's do it, man.
- 13:33Alright.
- 14:14Man in Georgia.
- 14:17Alright.
- 14:17Well, if you wanna know, then you better go about 200 back to the still in the wood where
- 14:26the cooking another never phase and he's a killing bank robin machine.
- 14:44Now have you ever heard about the fattest man who ever walked the streets of Georgia?
- 14:51He could jump so high that children thought he could fly.
- 14:55Man, don't you cross them because you lose your life.
- 14:58I hate to be you at the table where the protune.
- 15:02I keep your mouth shut now.
- 15:03That's the only clue.
- 15:05Well, I'm a talking about the baddest man in Georgia.
- 15:11Alright.
- 15:50Ready to go.
- 15:52Now have you ever heard about the baddest man who ever walked the streets of Georgia?
- 15:59He can jump so high, no women thought he could fly.
- 16:31Alright.
- 16:32Yes, sir.
- 16:33True story.
- 16:34Yeah.
- 16:35Yeah.
- 16:36That's that's the crazy part.
- 16:37Right?
- 16:38That it's all true.
- 16:39Yep.
- 16:39That's I'm a history guy.
- 16:40You know?
- 16:41Yeah.
- 16:41I love it.
- 16:42I love the the storytelling nature of what you do, that you're here to tell the stories.
- 16:48Whether it's, you know, a long bow you know, this this drawn out thing, right, a whole LP
- 16:53where the stories or if it's just one quick one to to get in a get a feeling out.
- 16:58Right?
- 16:58I mean, you've been at this so long.
- 17:00You've very how many songs you think you've written?
- 17:02Thousands?
- 17:03I don't know about
- 17:04thousands, but
- 17:04I've got don't Hundreds, probably.
- 17:07Well, this is, you know, this will all be about me present since you asked.
- 17:11On the way down from I drove five hours just today to get here from Lutzen, Minnesota.
- 17:17And I just started digging into my voice memos coming down here, because I've just been
- 17:22thinking about new music and projects and stuff.
- 17:24I started cycling through them, and I think there's like almost 400 of them in there.
- 17:28And so, you know, not everyone is a song.
- 17:30Right, But, you know, we started going through them and listening and listening.
- 17:33Yeah.
- 17:33It's like a lot, man.
- 17:34There's a lot out there.
- 17:35I mean, Finnish published songs, probably close to a hundred.
- 17:39But there's so many.
- 17:40Yeah.
- 17:40It's an incredible feat just to get a hundred songs to fruition.
- 17:44You know what I mean?
- 17:45To get them produced.
- 17:46It's no small feat to do this as someone who's recorded just a small few and never in, like, a
- 17:52true I mean, yeah, I was in a studio and stuff, but not a true professional setting where it
- 17:56was like, we're on the clock, and we are trying to make something timeless here.
- 17:59And I would say that that is what I get from your man.
- 18:02It's timeless, man.
- 18:03That that blues, a Palisade Peach is a great record.
- 18:06I can't wait to hear the new one.
- 18:08You feel like you just keep getting better?
- 18:10Well, I
- 18:13I like to think that we keep we keep moving forward.
- 18:18And and I I guess to honor answer that, it's like I try to honor the craft.
- 18:24So that means playing with intention.
- 18:26That means making every show count, making everything you do count.
- 18:30And that goes for everything in life.
- 18:32So yeah, I I like to think that that's what we're doing.
- 18:36We always listen a lot to our recordings.
- 18:39I like to go back and listen to the shows.
- 18:40We try to tape stuff and analyze it, think about it.
- 18:44But mainly, try to do something with feeling and with intention where people can really feel
- 18:50it and go home with something.
- 18:52That's the beauty of the music experience is that people can come and share that with us.
- 18:58And we get to do that together.
- 19:00And that is such a powerful thing, and truly can change the world.
- 19:03And, know, changing the world is changing yourself.
- 19:06It's changing or maybe not changing, but helping your neighbor.
- 19:10And when people can come and have that experience, and they can walk away from a show
- 19:14feeling like a new person or they just shed a bunch of skin or baggage that they needed to
- 19:22there's nothing in life that that comes anywhere near that for me.
- 19:26I'm sure there is examples of it.
- 19:28Some people are runners, or they're painters, or they're into sports and performance, all
- 19:33these different things.
- 19:34I know that all those things can can provide that experience for you.
- 19:38But for me, music is it's it's a completely religious experience.
- 19:42It's powerful, and it connects us as people together.
- 19:44So I guess I'd like to think that it keeps getting better only because I won't back down,
- 19:50and I won't stop.
- 19:51I just keep going forward.
- 19:52Yeah.
- 19:53A freight train, man.
- 19:54Just keep on going, baby.
- 19:55Yeah.
- 19:56Nice for the living.
- 19:57Yeah.
- 19:58Exactly.
- 19:58Exactly.
- 19:58Well, and I kinda said so, and I'm sure you you can relate.
- 20:01I'm sure you've played a ton of other people's music and shows and have played all these long
- 20:05shows.
- 20:05I mean, you've been doing it for twenty five years, you know.
- 20:08You're gonna you're gonna get you a little bit of everything.
- 20:10And for me, you know, I've been working the same set list of covers or something for the
- 20:14last year.
- 20:15And what I've been doing is that I've been landing in the markets that I wanna go to and
- 20:19just finding local guys to play it.
- 20:21Very middle of the road set list that I was playing just because the guys in South Dakota
- 20:25didn't really wanna dig too far out in one direction or the other.
- 20:28They wanna okay.
- 20:29Well, it's like I got kinda bored playing that.
- 20:31Sure.
- 20:31But by now introducing that to other people and playing them the same songs but with different
- 20:37people every time I go out, you know, this weekend, I played at the Sherwood Lounge with
- 20:41two guys, and I played here at the Midway with two other guys, you know.
- 20:45Yeah.
- 20:45And that's kinda what kept it fresh to me.
- 20:47New experience.
- 20:48I don't I don't wanna live the same experience over and over again.
- 20:50Yeah,
- 20:50man.
- 20:51You know?
- 20:51It's great.
- 20:52Like you said, life is meant to be lived and or meant to grow.
- 20:55I think you said, you know, when you heal the world, you heal yourself.
- 20:58And I would say the opposite of that is true too.
- 21:00When you heal yourself, you hear the world.
- 21:02That's right.
- 21:02And, you know, music is so healing.
- 21:05We've had a a situation in Rapid City where one of their big outdoor music things, you know,
- 21:11serves 5,000 people every every Thursday summer nights.
- 21:14They're in danger of not getting their permits for the 2025 season.
- 21:18And and whatever the reasons for that may be, the way I put it was like, you know, this is a
- 21:23cultural, spiritual event.
- 21:24And somebody was like, how is it cultural and spiritual?
- 21:27And I was like, have you ever heard music before?
- 21:30Yeah.
- 21:30You know, like, you ever been to a concert?
- 21:32Have you ever, like, experienced these things?
- 21:34Like, how is it not?
- 21:35Sure.
- 21:36So, yeah, you you touch on so much of it.
- 21:39And and it makes me feel like I'm on the right path knowing that a guy like you is thinking
- 21:42the same thing, man.
- 21:44Respect.
- 21:44And not putting you on a pedestal or anything, but you've experienced more than I have.
- 21:48Right?
- 21:48And that's the respect that I have for you.
- 21:50You've been in this craft that that I've loved for so long, and maybe for the first time now,
- 21:55I'm actually approaching it as a profession.
- 21:58And granted, you know, now my my performing career, at least with a guitar in my hand, is
- 22:04kinda taking a back seat to this because this is how I serve my community.
- 22:08Yeah, man.
- 22:08Right?
- 22:09This is a much better way for me to use my gifts of organizing people and bringing people
- 22:13together to kind of bring nights like this to fruition or days like this.
- 22:17I don't even know what time it is.
- 22:18I don't know what day it is.
- 22:20Can you all put your hands together for Bubba, please?
- 22:22Oh, stop.
- 22:23Oh,
- 22:23yeah.
- 22:23I appreciate you guys.
- 22:25He's he's he's got the guts to stand up and make this happen and represent for artists and
- 22:29try to, you know, create a scene.
- 22:31So good job, man.
- 22:32Yeah.
- 22:32Well, it's because of guys like you that that this thing exists because I think there's not
- 22:38enough press.
- 22:39There's not enough people talking about all the talented people that I know.
- 22:42You know, we don't have a Rolling Stone, a lot of these weekly magazines that we used to have.
- 22:46I know that you had a great one up here for years, but a lot of these things have gone away
- 22:49because of money or or whatever the situation may be.
- 22:52You know?
- 22:53So we're just doing it all online.
- 22:54Right?
- 22:54I'm doing the write ups and the q and a's online and just trying to get something out
- 22:57there and hoping that it eventually gets enough momentum where other people really wanna start
- 23:02contributing their own art to that.
- 23:04And it's not all just artists who are, you know, writing music and recording, but it's
- 23:09also people who wanna write about those people that we need too.
- 23:12So I'm really hoping that, you know, this weekend and having this beautiful package that
- 23:16we're gonna put it into and and there's an incredible day that we've had, I'm hoping that
- 23:20this is kind of the the selling point now that, like, this is what we wanna do, and this is
- 23:24what I want to spend the rest of my life doing is stuff just like this, man.
- 23:28So thank you, Mark, for being a part of it.
- 23:30It really means a lot to me.
- 23:31You're very welcome, brother.
- 23:32Yeah.
- 23:32Why don't you play us another song, man?
- 23:34Alright.
- 23:34Let's do it.
- 23:36Is my daughter here?
- 23:38My daughter was coming through.
- 23:40No, not yet?
- 23:42Alright, that's okay.
- 23:43We'll keep you on stage until she gets here.
- 23:44Alright.
- 23:46The
- 23:46song's called Bound to Be Blessed, and if you guys want to sing along, the chorus is easy.
- 23:50It goes, yes, yes, yes.
- 23:53I think I can do that.
- 23:54We got it?
- 23:54Yep.
- 23:55Yeah.
- 23:55You too, man.
- 24:05Right out the door.
- 24:07Don't be afraid, but what comes next?
- 24:11If you try to do your best, Lord, you just ain't unknown where life is in store.
- 24:20I checked in another roadside motel.
- 24:26Yeah.
- 24:26Turns out they got a room just for you.
- 24:33Tonight, we hit the stage and led all on the line.
- 24:37Midway Saloon.
- 24:39You gotta let your let your light shine good.
- 24:44You're bound to be blessed.
- 24:47Sing it loud.
- 24:48Yes, yes, yes, you're not like the rest.
- 24:53La lauren, you write your own story.
- 24:58There is just not for worry.
- 25:01Yeah, yeah, yeah, too confess.
- 26:31Yes, sir.
- 26:34On a Sunday in Saint Paul, can I get a witness?
- 26:37Yes, Right here.
- 26:42Well, Mark Joseph, thank you for joining me, man.
- 26:44I am I'm just so thrilled to know you, to call you a friend now.
- 26:48We're gonna do some great things together.
- 26:51I know with your energy and the power of this music that we're making, we're gonna do some
- 26:57great things for a lot of people.
- 26:58So everybody, Mark Joseph.
- 27:00Welcome
- 27:03to the Scene Project songwriter Showcase.
- 27:06We are here at the Midway Saloon in beautiful Saint Paul, Minnesota, and with me now is Kaia
- 27:11Marie and her dad, Mark Joseph.
- 27:13Yeah.
- 27:14Thank you.
- 27:15Well, Kaia, I just met you, like, five minutes ago.
- 27:19You had no idea you were gonna be on stage and doing this tonight.
- 27:22No.
- 27:23No.
- 27:23Not at all.
- 27:23How do you feel about it?
- 27:25I'm excited.
- 27:26I like for inviting me.
- 27:27Oh, you're so welcome.
- 27:28Yeah.
- 27:29As someone who grew up with in a family band, right, my dad played with me and how I got
- 27:35introduced to music.
- 27:36I was not going to let the opportunity slip away to put you and your dad on stage together
- 27:40like this.
- 27:41So welcome to the show.
- 27:43Why don't you tell me a little bit about you?
- 27:45We know a lot about dad already.
- 27:46So why don't you share a little bit about yourself?
- 27:48Yeah.
- 27:49So I work with kids.
- 27:51I'm a gymnastics coach.
- 27:53I love to travel, and one of my favorite things to do in the meanwhile is play with music with
- 27:59my dad.
- 27:59Yeah.
- 28:00Yeah.
- 28:00That's saxophone too.
- 28:01Really?
- 28:02Yeah.
- 28:02How awesome.
- 28:03And dad says you guys are working on writing some songs for a future EP or LP.
- 28:08Yeah.
- 28:08We're hoping to.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:10Well, I think I think you're gonna accomplish that.
- 28:13It's just finding the time to put in the work.
- 28:14Right?
- 28:15Yeah.
- 28:15Absolutely.
- 28:16Yeah.
- 28:16Writing songs is not easy.
- 28:18No.
- 28:18It's not.
- 28:19Well, and something that, you know, dad had alluded to was that, you know, you you write
- 28:24songs for the muse.
- 28:25Well, you can't rush the muse either, can you, Mark?
- 28:27That's right.
- 28:27No.
- 28:28No.
- 28:28You can't.
- 28:29No.
- 28:29He he's he's really good at it.
- 28:31So I've been learning.
- 28:32I've been learning from him.
- 28:33He's a good teacher.
- 28:34Well, and life teaches you a lot about songwriting as well too.
- 28:37And obviously, you're a very young lady still.
- 28:39So you got a lot of living yet to do, but you got some of the best teachers around you.
- 28:44What's let's play a song.
- 28:45Let's play a song, and I'll get to hear you perform, and then I'll have more questions
- 28:49after that.
- 28:50This is a song called Girl in the Pecan Tree from the forthcoming record next year, and Kai
- 28:56is featured on it.
- 29:21And there goes little Louise, the girl in the pecan tree.
- 29:27They tree.
- 29:44Girl in the pecan tree.
- 29:46The girl in the pecan tree.
- 29:51Well, you just don't know where these old boys go except for the little girl right there down
- 29:59at the end of the road.
- 30:02Go ahead, take your step across the Bear County Line.
- 30:07You can hear the truth as it whispers through the tops of the Georgia Pines.
- 30:13There goes little Louise, a girl in a pecan tree.
- 30:18They come and go as they please, driving fast through the streets.
- 30:38The pecan tree.
- 30:41The lawman guns and whiskey runs around here as a way of life.
- 30:47So much that the law don't see when the sun drops out of sight.
- 30:53Harold Ruth and Billy Bert Dixie boys would hang around.
- 30:58All the truth that just don't know except the girl who runs this town.
- 31:04There goes little Louise, a girl in the pecan tree.
- 31:09They come and go as they please, driving fast through the streets.
- 31:15Imagine what she sees, the eyes within a The in the pecan tree.
- 31:34Girl in the pecan tree.
- 31:39Yeah.
- 31:39Yeah.
- 31:40Good job.
- 31:42Good job.
- 31:43Yeah.
- 31:44Well, I know dad plays a lot of songs each and every year, but I venture to say that that was
- 31:48one of his favorite performances right there by a long shot.
- 31:52You know that's right.
- 31:53Yeah.
- 31:53Well, I got young kids too, man.
- 31:55I know what it means now.
- 31:57Right?
- 31:57And that's something as a young man that I I could have never fathomed.
- 32:01And it's it's a beautiful thing that you're doing.
- 32:04You're making your dad's dream come true, Kaya, in more ways than one, I'm sure.
- 32:08Oh,
- 32:08yeah.
- 32:08So, Kaya, talk about what it's like growing up with a rock star dad that, you know, spends a
- 32:13lot of time on the road, I'm sure, and is gone and and, you know, when you do get to see him
- 32:18perform, maybe it's on a big stage or it's a little room with just a few people, you know,
- 32:22it's a different experience and no one else here that's spoken with us today has lived
- 32:25that.
- 32:26So, share a little bit with us.
- 32:27Oh, it's incredible.
- 32:28I I loved growing up going to festivals and, you know, running around with a hula hoop and
- 32:34watching the shows.
- 32:35And I got, you know, invited up on stage from a very young age, and it was just it's so
- 32:41inspiring to be around people who are really living their truest life and playing music from
- 32:47the soul, and it really teaches you that, you know, that's what's life what life is all
- 32:52about.
- 32:52It's really Amen.
- 32:53Chasing that dream.
- 32:54Yeah.
- 32:55No doubt.
- 32:55And I think you you touch on something there, especially the the people that your dad has
- 32:59surrounded himself with that are out there living that, you know, being their truest
- 33:03selves.
- 33:03And I think that teaches, you know, especially young ones that that grow up around that.
- 33:08When you learn that at an early age, you can avoid maybe a lot of the the troubles and
- 33:12strife in life, you know, that we go through trying to find who we are.
- 33:15You know, and yeah, really a beautiful moment sharing up here with you guys.
- 33:20I appreciate you all letting me letting me have you up here and share this.
- 33:24You got some more songs for us too?
- 33:26Yeah.
- 33:26Oh, yeah.
- 33:34So I'm gonna do a old Tom Petty song that that Kaia shines on pretty bright.
- 34:17Loves Jesus, and America too.
- 34:23She's a good girl, she's crazy about Elvis, loves horses and her boyfriend too.
- 34:35Yeah.
- 34:41It's a long day and I'm free.
- 36:46I'm free falling.
- 36:53Yeah.
- 36:53I'm free.
- 37:39Yeah.
- 37:57Alright.
- 37:58That was really beautiful, guys.
- 38:00Unless you got something else to share, I don't know what better way to end this perfect,
- 38:04perfect day.
- 38:05There you have it.
- 38:05Beautiful.
- 38:06Well, thank you, Kaia, for coming up and joining us off the cuff.
- 38:09Didn't know you were gonna be a star of a show today, but Thank
- 38:13you for bringing everybody together.
- 38:14Hey.
- 38:15It's it's what I do.
- 38:16Yes.
- 38:16Thank you, Bubba.
- 38:17Hey.
- 38:17God bless you, brother.
- 38:18No.
- 38:18Thank you.
- 38:18Thank you, guys.
- 38:19Yep.
- 38:19That's Kaia Marie, Mark Joseph.
- 38:22Thank y'all.
- 38:23This has been the songwriter showcase presented by the Scene Projects.
- 38:27The Midway Saloon has been so good to us.
- 38:30I am Bubba starts.
- 38:31I know.
- 38:32At least 13.
- 38:34And we gotta send a big shout out to Kaia's boyfriend Cameron.
- 38:37It's his birthday right here.
- 38:3820 birthday right now.
- 38:40So happy birthday, bud.
- 38:41Yeah.
- 38:42We're about to go have some dinner.
- 38:43We're getting a little state dinner in.
- 38:44So man.
- 38:45Happy birthday, brother.
- 38:46So much for joining us.
- 38:47This has been an incredible day of music, and I'm just so, so grateful for it.
- 38:53Have a good night.
- 38:54That was
