- 1:00Speaker 1: Now here's a quick reminder that you can have the
- 1:02Speaker 1: latest edition of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet,
- 1:06Speaker 1: or computer by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's
- 1:10Speaker 1: the greatest thing since Kyle Brandt's full length interview with
- 1:16Speaker 1: Joe Burrow. Last week, before the Jacksonville game, the NFL
- 1:19Speaker 1: Network aired a three minute and thirty second interview with
- 1:23Speaker 1: the Bengals quarterback that was done by Kyle Brandt, But
- 1:26Speaker 1: after that version aired on TV, Kyle shared what he
- 1:30Speaker 1: called the director's cut on social media. It's sixteen minutes
- 1:35Speaker 1: long and exceptional. Kyle clearly gave a lot of thought
- 1:39Speaker 1: to his questions, made Joe comfortable and got him to
- 1:43Speaker 1: open up. I think I've seen just about every long
- 1:46Speaker 1: interview that Joe has done since twenty twenty, and I
- 1:49Speaker 1: don't think anybody has done it better. If you haven't
- 1:52Speaker 1: seen it yet, just search for Joe Burrow Director's Cut.
- 1:57Speaker 1: This is a podcast for Bengals fans, so I'm guessing
- 2:00Speaker 1: that you don't want to hear too many radio replays
- 2:03Speaker 1: from Sunday's game in Minneapolis, so let's boil it down
- 2:08Speaker 1: to just a few key plays.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Now.
- 2:10Speaker 1: On second and ten, Browning, moving around in the pocket,
- 2:13Speaker 1: begins scrambling, throws a terrible throw, and it is intercepted
- 2:17Speaker 1: by Isaiah Rodgers. He's sprinting up the sideline into Bengals
- 2:21Speaker 1: territory and on his way to the end zone. Touchdown
- 2:25Speaker 1: Minnesota eighty six yards on the runback by Isaiah Rogers.
- 2:33Speaker 1: In fairness to Jake Browning, I didn't see it live,
- 2:36Speaker 1: but that pass was tipped ever so slightly by safety
- 2:40Speaker 1: Harrison Smith, so the throw itself wasn't terrible, just the
- 2:44Speaker 1: end result. The Bengals fell behind seventeen to nothing before
- 2:48Speaker 1: Evan McPherson booted a forty five yard field goal about
- 2:51Speaker 1: five minutes left in the half. The defense promptly forced
- 2:54Speaker 1: a three and out that included a sack by Chris Jenkins.
- 2:58Speaker 1: He had one and a half in the game, and
- 3:00Speaker 1: the Bengals offense drove to the Minnesota thirty six with
- 3:04Speaker 1: a chance to score again before getting the ball back
- 3:08Speaker 1: to begin the third quarter. Two minutes to go in
- 3:10Speaker 1: the half, Browning waiting for a shotgun snap with Drew
- 3:13Speaker 1: Sample in the backfield to block Browning with a quick
- 3:16Speaker 1: pass out to the right, It is caught by Fant
- 3:19Speaker 1: He gets hit around the shoulders and loses the ball.
- 3:22Speaker 1: The Vikings are running it back and it looks like
- 3:24Speaker 1: they'll take it to the house. Isaiah Rodgers scored on
- 3:27Speaker 1: a pick six, and now he scores on a puffle
- 3:31Speaker 1: recovery That sixty six yard run back made it twenty
- 3:34Speaker 1: four to three and killed any momentum the Bengals were building.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Here's Jake Browning.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Right for the half is really when it's I think
- 3:43Speaker 3: it's snowballed. And so, yeah, you're down.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I think it was seventeen to three.
- 3:49Speaker 3: We're driving, We're gonna get the ball after halftime, you know,
- 3:53Speaker 3: I feel like we kind of got into a rhythm
- 3:55Speaker 3: a little bit across the fifty and you know, ended
- 3:58Speaker 3: up having another and so, you know, I think just
- 4:02Speaker 3: in general, I mean, anytime you turn the ball over
- 4:04Speaker 3: that much, you're gonna you're gonna get blown out. And
- 4:06Speaker 3: it's and that's exactly what happened.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Two more lost fumbles in the second quarter and an
- 4:10Speaker 1: interception in the third made the turnover difference five nothing.
- 4:15Speaker 1: That's obviously the most significant stat in the Vikings forty
- 4:20Speaker 1: eight to ten win. It ended Cincinnati's seven game winning
- 4:24Speaker 1: streak going back to last year, and the Bengals will
- 4:26Speaker 1: need to put it behind them quickly before playing a
- 4:29Speaker 1: Monday night road game in Denver next week. Here's more
- 4:33Speaker 1: from Jake Browning.
- 4:34Speaker 3: We got work today and you got to sit in it,
- 4:38Speaker 3: and you gotta go through those emotions of like just
- 4:42Speaker 3: being miserable, and then you got to watch the tape
- 4:46Speaker 3: and and find your key things that you need to
- 4:50Speaker 3: focus on for me to do my part and making
- 4:53Speaker 3: sure that we move the ball better on offense and
- 4:55Speaker 3: don't turn the ball over and get some points up
- 4:58Speaker 3: on the board and so so uh yeah, I mean
- 5:02Speaker 3: it's kind of the same process whether you whether you
- 5:04Speaker 3: win or lose, but obviously it's just much more painful
- 5:08Speaker 3: when you lose, especially the way we did. You gotta
- 5:10Speaker 3: be able to bounce back. I mean, very fortunate it
- 5:13Speaker 3: only counts as one loss, and uh, you know, I
- 5:17Speaker 3: think for me, it's just a big emphasis on you know,
- 5:20Speaker 3: there's a lot of things that happen on offense that
- 5:22Speaker 3: that didn't go well, and for me, it's really focusing
- 5:26Speaker 3: on what my role was in that and what I
- 5:28Speaker 3: need to do to get better and collectively as a group,
- 5:31Speaker 3: we gotta we gotta respond, and so uh yeah, I
- 5:34Speaker 3: think that's that's the hardest part, is just going out
- 5:38Speaker 3: and not playing well and dealing with all the emotions
- 5:41Speaker 3: after that, and uh and bouncing back. Nobody's happy about
- 5:45Speaker 3: what just happened, and obviously and so you know, finding
- 5:49Speaker 3: the balance of like knowing sitting in that feeling, knowing
- 5:52Speaker 3: how that feels, going through watching the film and addressing
- 5:55Speaker 3: the issues, but not letting this emotion of how you
- 5:57Speaker 3: feel after a game like that, you know, turn into people,
- 6:02Speaker 3: you know whatever, turn it into a bad locker room.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I don't.
- 6:04Speaker 3: I don't think that's the case at all. You know,
- 6:08Speaker 3: we got work today, but we had a lot of turnovers,
- 6:11Speaker 3: and that's kind of what happens. And so trying to
- 6:15Speaker 3: separate what you put on film from the emotion of
- 6:18Speaker 3: how you're feeling after having a very poor game.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Routing completed seventy percent of his passes and did throw
- 6:24Speaker 1: a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Routing in the
- 6:27Speaker 1: shotgun now back at the nine yard line. Sample in
- 6:30Speaker 1: the backfield to his left. Routing drops back, looking bouncing
- 6:34Speaker 1: in the pocket, floats a pass caught by Sample, great
- 6:37Speaker 1: inside cut runs toward the goal line, touchdown, Bengals. We're
- 6:44Speaker 1: in the locker room with Drew. Sample caught a touchdown
- 6:46Speaker 1: pass for the Bengals today. One of the bright spots.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And what was an unfortunate game. How difficult was it
- 6:52Speaker 1: when they scored those defensive touchdowns in the first half
- 6:55Speaker 1: to kind of get the ball rolling for the Vikings.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Yeah, obviously, turnovers killed us. You know, that's across the league.
- 7:02Speaker 4: That's the number one thing, you know, we can't do,
- 7:05Speaker 4: and so that's on us to be to be better,
- 7:07Speaker 4: and that was really the thing that kind of shifted
- 7:10Speaker 4: the game in their favor.
- 7:12Speaker 2: You know, we had some a few.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Explosives, a couple of drives that were starting to get going,
- 7:16Speaker 4: and I think we had a couple and then we
- 7:18Speaker 4: had the turnovers on all those, so that kind of
- 7:19Speaker 4: killed the momentum. And you know, Di did a good
- 7:22Speaker 4: job of capitalizing those on the you know, scoring and
- 7:26Speaker 4: then their offense did a good job, you know, not
- 7:28Speaker 4: giving up takeaways. So yeah, I mean that was obviously
- 7:32Speaker 4: a big part of the game, and you know, we
- 7:33Speaker 4: just weren't good enough.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Really in any face, felt like that second defensive touchdown
- 7:39Speaker 1: was really the one that kind of made it difficult
- 7:42Speaker 1: because you just scored, you had the ball near midfield
- 7:44Speaker 1: two minute warning. It felt like maybe if you score
- 7:47Speaker 1: and you get the ball to begin the third quarter,
- 7:48Speaker 1: you're still in the game, and that one was really
- 7:51Speaker 1: difficult overcome.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think I think they all might
- 7:54Speaker 4: have been on the other side of the fifty and
- 7:56Speaker 4: like plus territory. So you know that was just not
- 8:00Speaker 4: only giving them points, but taking away, like you said,
- 8:02Speaker 4: points that we could have you know, slowly crawled away
- 8:04Speaker 4: back in the game. And you know, obviously at the half,
- 8:07Speaker 4: we knew we had to come out and just try
- 8:09Speaker 4: to flush that and you know, go in the second
- 8:11Speaker 4: half and then you know, we were really just not
- 8:13Speaker 4: able to get anything going.
- 8:14Speaker 2: So it was it was tough. Hats off to them,
- 8:16Speaker 2: but we definitely need to be better.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I know, you guys had a lot of confidence in
- 8:19Speaker 1: Jake Browning coming into the game. He earned that with
- 8:21Speaker 1: what he did two years ago. How do you feel
- 8:23Speaker 1: about the likelihood that he pushes this behind him and
- 8:26Speaker 1: moves on and plays well going forward.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think we all have to do that.
- 8:30Speaker 2: You know.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Obviously, that's that hurts, that's I mean, you never want
- 8:34Speaker 4: to lose like that. It's and it's embarrassing. You never
- 8:35Speaker 4: want to put that on tape, But it happened, and
- 8:38Speaker 4: you know, I got on it. We got to own it,
- 8:39Speaker 4: you know, as a group, as a team, and you know,
- 8:42Speaker 4: we have an extra day this week. Going into Monday
- 8:45Speaker 4: night in the prime time. So you know, we got
- 8:47Speaker 4: to learn from it and and move on really and
- 8:50Speaker 4: try to figure out how we can do better not
- 8:52Speaker 4: do that. And you know, I think we still have
- 8:55Speaker 4: a really talented, full of team. We got great players
- 8:57Speaker 4: on all sides of the ball. So we just gotta
- 9:00Speaker 4: we just gotta learn from it, flush it when it's
- 9:02Speaker 4: time to flush it and get back and you know,
- 9:04Speaker 4: get really playing our style football.
- 9:06Speaker 1: And you know, we gotta find that it's a noisy
- 9:09Speaker 1: place and aggressive defense. Does that feed on itself once
- 9:12Speaker 1: they start to build a lead.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, I think so.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I mean I thought we did a pretty good job,
- 9:16Speaker 4: you know, communicating different things in the noise, but obviously,
- 9:19Speaker 4: you know, feeding on the turnovers, that's that's big for them.
- 9:22Speaker 2: And you know their offense fed on that too.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Obviously took a lot of pressure off them us giving
- 9:27Speaker 4: up those points. So we made it hard on our
- 9:30Speaker 4: defense for sure. But like I said, we just gotta
- 9:32Speaker 4: we just gonna be better. I think no one's gonna
- 9:34Speaker 4: shy away from that. We're a team and we're gonna
- 9:38Speaker 4: bounce back from this. And that's all you can do.
- 9:39Speaker 1: The biggest thing the Bengals have to get fixed. Is
- 9:42Speaker 1: the running game. Cincinnati averaged about two and a half
- 9:45Speaker 1: yards per carry and Chase Brown wound up with three
- 9:48Speaker 1: yards on ten attempts. Chase talked about it with the
- 9:51Speaker 1: reporters after the game.
- 9:53Speaker 5: The main thing to take away from today is, you know,
- 9:56Speaker 5: it's not gonna get any worse than this, and we
- 9:58Speaker 5: got to learn from it and move on.
- 9:59Speaker 6: What is that say to you guys after the game?
- 10:02Speaker 2: After the game?
- 10:02Speaker 5: Yeah, pretty much just that. I mean, you know, we
- 10:05Speaker 5: gotta put this behind us. Five turnovers is you know
- 10:07Speaker 5: that's gonna be the result every single time.
- 10:10Speaker 2: You know, ball security was a.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Big issue today, so I mean, you know, a lot
- 10:14Speaker 5: of self inflicted wounds, you take those away. I mean,
- 10:19Speaker 5: we probably still didn't play good enough to win the game,
- 10:21Speaker 5: but you know it's it's not that big of a point.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Spread for you personally, Chase.
- 10:26Speaker 1: How frustrating has this first three games been for your production?
- 10:29Speaker 2: Frustrating?
- 10:31Speaker 5: You know for me, wins wins mean a lot, So
- 10:34Speaker 5: I mean put production aside. Obviously, you know the big
- 10:38Speaker 5: games will come and you know the production will come.
- 10:40Speaker 5: But I think the main thing is is winning games
- 10:43Speaker 5: and when you lose it it it it's it.
- 10:47Speaker 2: It it's different.
- 10:48Speaker 5: So I mean, obviously we gotta look at ourselves in
- 10:50Speaker 5: the mirror and figure out where we gotta get.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Better and move on.
- 10:52Speaker 6: Because of the point differential, there will be a lot
- 10:55Speaker 6: of people that will look at this game and the
- 10:56Speaker 6: fact that it was the first game without Joe question
- 11:00Speaker 6: if you guys are going to be able to be
- 11:01Speaker 6: the offense that you want to be, what would you.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Say to that?
- 11:04Speaker 5: Yeah, that's fine. I mean, you know, let people, you know,
- 11:08Speaker 5: have their own opinion about us, and you know what
- 11:11Speaker 5: we're capable of. But as long as we stay tight
- 11:13Speaker 5: and you know, focus on getting better and you know,
- 11:16Speaker 5: get out of our feels and put this behind us,
- 11:18Speaker 5: we'll be just fine. I think we gotta take the
- 11:21Speaker 5: big main thing that you know, we gotta take away
- 11:24Speaker 5: as a team is, you know, we got to play
- 11:25Speaker 5: with the chip on our shoulder, like whatever people say.
- 11:28Speaker 5: You know, as long as we're good in this locker room,
- 11:30Speaker 5: we'll be We'll be just fine.
- 11:31Speaker 7: Where is the better run game to start with, Jason?
- 11:34Speaker 2: Where does that start? Yeah?
- 11:35Speaker 5: And I think in the main thing that reflects a
- 11:41Speaker 5: good run game is physicality, just movement, breaking tackles, getting
- 11:47Speaker 5: up to the second level, making big plays. So I
- 11:49Speaker 5: think you know that'll come, and it'll come.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Now, let's hear from head coach Zach Taylor, who spent
- 11:57Speaker 1: a couple of minutes with Dave Lapham after the game.
- 12:01Speaker 8: Forty eight to ten is a tough pill to swallow.
- 12:04Speaker 8: What's your first thought? Turnovers?
- 12:05Speaker 9: You know, you lose the turno bet on the first
- 12:07Speaker 9: half four to nothing, two of them for touchdowns on
- 12:10Speaker 9: the road. In this environment, that's gonna be tough to
- 12:13Speaker 9: be able to overcome that. Added a fifth one in
- 12:15Speaker 9: the second half, put another ball on the ground, didn't
- 12:18Speaker 9: get any on defense, and so it's a very simple
- 12:21Speaker 9: recipe for success or a lack of When you go
- 12:24Speaker 9: on the road and you turn the ball over five
- 12:26Speaker 9: times and you get none of them, typically the score
- 12:28Speaker 9: might it's gonna be pretty ugly.
- 12:30Speaker 8: And that's what it was today and road. There are
- 12:34Speaker 8: places to visit on the road, and then there are
- 12:36Speaker 8: other places to visit the road. In terms of crowd noise,
- 12:38Speaker 8: this is one of the loudest. I mean that they
- 12:41Speaker 8: can really get after it, they can get going. The
- 12:43Speaker 8: momentum can affect how they react to what's going on
- 12:47Speaker 8: in the football game. How difficult was that crowd noise
- 12:50Speaker 8: to deal with.
- 12:50Speaker 9: I mean, we gave him point to sure about and
- 12:52Speaker 9: so the crowd didn't cause turnovers. The crowd didn't do
- 12:55Speaker 9: any of that. We just didn't perform well enough to
- 12:57Speaker 9: be able to win the game. And that's ultimately at
- 13:00Speaker 9: the end of the game, it was all phases. We
- 13:01Speaker 9: didn't do enough to make a play at the right time.
- 13:03Speaker 9: On defense, I thought in the first half the defense
- 13:05Speaker 9: gave us some positive things. We handed them fourteen points.
- 13:09Speaker 9: That's not on the defense. So again, just collectively, we
- 13:12Speaker 9: got to find a way when when a unit's down,
- 13:14Speaker 9: for the other unit to somehow pick them up and
- 13:15Speaker 9: create a big play. And today we just as a
- 13:18Speaker 9: team failed in all phases.
- 13:19Speaker 8: I think you make a great point the defense, really,
- 13:22Speaker 8: I mean, you know, it's hard to say they played
- 13:24Speaker 8: well when forty eight points were put up on the board,
- 13:26Speaker 8: but they were in a tough situation field position. But
- 13:30Speaker 8: all in all, I mean I thought that maybe the
- 13:33Speaker 8: defense might have been the best of the three units today.
- 13:35Speaker 9: There's no question. I mean, we put them in a
- 13:37Speaker 9: terrible spot offensively in the first half, and I think
- 13:40Speaker 9: our you know, our red zone defense at times this
- 13:42Speaker 9: season has been has been impressive. We've got some takeaways
- 13:45Speaker 9: and some turnovers and downs. Today the red zone defense
- 13:48Speaker 9: wasn't good enough and so that led to some touchdowns
- 13:51Speaker 9: when we did give them short fields. So we got
- 13:53Speaker 9: to continue to improve there. But again it's it's this
- 13:56Speaker 9: loss is collectively as a team, we're all going to
- 13:58Speaker 9: own this.
- 13:59Speaker 1: So three weeks into the season, the Bengals are two
- 14:02Speaker 1: and one and tied for first in the AFC North.
- 14:05Speaker 1: The Steelers are two and one after a twenty one
- 14:08Speaker 1: to fourteen win at New England. The Ravens are one
- 14:11Speaker 1: in one heading into a Monday night home game against Detroit,
- 14:14Speaker 1: and the Browns got their first win, stunning the Packers
- 14:18Speaker 1: thirteen to ten as Cleveland rookie Andre Schmidt hit a
- 14:22Speaker 1: fifty five yard field goal to win the game as
- 14:25Speaker 1: time expired. The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to you

- 14:47Speaker 1: Now time for the radio guys recap.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Lap.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You don't make it to the NFL if you don't
- 14:54Speaker 1: have a tremendous amount of pride, and the Bengals pride
- 14:57Speaker 1: took a hit, a big time hit today. How do
- 15:00Speaker 1: they deal with it?
- 15:01Speaker 2: Own up to it?
- 15:02Speaker 8: You know, the whole story of the game, you know, beginning, middle,
- 15:06Speaker 8: and end is five turnovers and you know some be
- 15:10Speaker 8: in return for touchdowns. You just can't you can't survive
- 15:14Speaker 8: in the National Football League giving people that kind of
- 15:17Speaker 8: an advantage over you. The game was literally over at halftime,
- 15:22Speaker 8: in the first thirty minutes of the football game. It
- 15:24Speaker 8: was it was way out of control. The Bengals had
- 15:28Speaker 8: a monumental comeback ahead of them, they didn't have it
- 15:31Speaker 8: in them to do it today.
- 15:32Speaker 2: So again we.
- 15:34Speaker 8: Boiled down to five turnovers. There were you know, mental
- 15:38Speaker 8: errors on the turnovers. I'm sure there were physical errors
- 15:40Speaker 8: in the turnovers, I know. So it's going to be
- 15:44Speaker 8: interesting to see how they bounce back, how quickly they
- 15:47Speaker 8: bounced back, both as you know, players and coaches.
- 15:51Speaker 1: You know, nationally, people are going to say, well, see
- 15:54Speaker 1: Joe Burrow is out. This team's in trouble. How do
- 15:56Speaker 1: the Bengals fight that and remain as confident in Jake
- 15:59Speaker 1: brown as they appeared to be prior to the game.
- 16:02Speaker 8: Yeah, I think I think that the thing you have
- 16:04Speaker 8: to do is get over that as quickly as you
- 16:07Speaker 8: possibly can. I mean, make it a make it a
- 16:10Speaker 8: memory of the past. You can't let let it, you know,
- 16:13Speaker 8: you can't let it just weigh on you. You can't harbor,
- 16:17Speaker 8: you know, the wishing that Joe Burrow was you was
- 16:20Speaker 8: your starting quarterback, because he's not anymore. And that's just
- 16:25Speaker 8: the nature of the beast. That's the reality of the situation.
- 16:27Speaker 8: A lot of times, reality sucks, and reality sucks a
- 16:30Speaker 8: big time right now for this football team. But Jake
- 16:33Speaker 8: Browning is going to have to do everything he possibly can,
- 16:36Speaker 8: both mentally and physically to get this team, you know,
- 16:39Speaker 8: out of the doldrums.
- 16:41Speaker 1: The biggest mystery of the year through three games is
- 16:45Speaker 1: why the Bengals have not been able to get Chase
- 16:47Speaker 1: brown going. He was so good in the last eight
- 16:49Speaker 1: games that he played last year. The numbers today are staggering.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Ten carries a total of three yards. His long run
- 16:56Speaker 1: of the day was four. How do they get Chase
- 16:58Speaker 1: brown going in the running game?
- 17:00Speaker 8: Those numbers are almost impossible. I mean it literally is
- 17:03Speaker 8: almost impossible to think that on ten carries, Chase Browns
- 17:07Speaker 8: will only generate a third of a first down three yards,
- 17:10Speaker 8: I mean less than a third of a first down.
- 17:14Speaker 8: If I'm an offensive lineman, I'm embarrassed by that. I
- 17:17Speaker 8: won't I couldn't stand to look at it. If a
- 17:19Speaker 8: coach put it up on a board, I'd throw up.
- 17:22Speaker 8: And you just you just can't have that. I mean,
- 17:25Speaker 8: if if your running game is that bad, if you
- 17:28Speaker 8: if you you know you can't get anything done on
- 17:31Speaker 8: the ground and make a defense at least think that
- 17:35Speaker 8: you have a chance or shot to run the football.
- 17:37Speaker 8: You get no chance in a football game. I don't
- 17:39Speaker 8: care if it's junior high school, high school, college, or
- 17:42Speaker 8: the National Football League, you just can't have that. As
- 17:46Speaker 8: a former offensive lineman, that that to me is mind boggling.
- 17:49Speaker 8: I just can't wrap my mind around that one that
- 17:53Speaker 8: And you know, I'm sure Jake Browning feels the same way.
- 17:55Speaker 8: He can't wrap his mind around it either. I mean,
- 17:58Speaker 8: I bet when guys came trudging back to the huddle
- 18:02Speaker 8: after another, you know, less than sound effort. I'm sure
- 18:07Speaker 8: he was like, come on, what the hell is going
- 18:09Speaker 8: on here, Let's shake ourselves, let's get this going. We're
- 18:12Speaker 8: a much better football team than we're showing today. And
- 18:15Speaker 8: I think that was kind of the theme of the entire day.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Jake was nineteen for twenty seven. That's a pretty good
- 18:20Speaker 1: completion percentage, one hundred and forty yards, one touchdown, two
- 18:24Speaker 1: pick six, two interceptions rather including one pick six. How
- 18:27Speaker 1: do you think that he weathered the storm, so to speak,
- 18:31Speaker 1: considering that there was quite a bit of pressure applied
- 18:34Speaker 1: by the Minnesota Vikings defense during the course of the game.
- 18:37Speaker 8: Yeah, I think that everybody has to take a look
- 18:40Speaker 8: at that. I think, you know, coaching staff, quarterbacks, running backs,
- 18:45Speaker 8: tight ends, wide receivers, offensive line, everybody has to take
- 18:49Speaker 8: a look at why the pressure was so extraordinary, why
- 18:52Speaker 8: it was so extreme, why the Bengals didn't have time
- 18:55Speaker 8: to operate. You know, I thought it was unfair to
- 18:59Speaker 8: Jake Browning. You know, hanging this loss on Jake grinning
- 19:02Speaker 8: is is a disservice. I think, you know, I've looking
- 19:07Speaker 8: at him in the locker room. I felt my heart
- 19:10Speaker 8: was aching for the guy. I felt badly for the guy.
- 19:12Speaker 8: As a foreign player. I know what's going through his mind,
- 19:15Speaker 8: and uh, you know it's not it's not pretty thoughts
- 19:17Speaker 8: right now. So you know, hopefully, uh, he's able to regroup,
- 19:22Speaker 8: shake himself, pull himself up out of the you know,
- 19:26Speaker 8: out of the doldrums, and and go compete next week.
- 19:29Speaker 1: He played twelve years of pro football, four years of
- 19:31Speaker 1: major college football at Syracuse. There were probably games like this,
- 19:35Speaker 1: if not quite this bad, what was the next week?
- 19:38Speaker 2: Like?
- 19:39Speaker 5: Tough?
- 19:39Speaker 8: You know, it's uh, you're you're you're taking a look
- 19:44Speaker 8: at everything about yourself from the inside out. What are
- 19:47Speaker 8: you made of? How important is the game? And uh,
- 19:51Speaker 8: I mean it's it's it's painful and it's difficult to
- 19:54Speaker 8: lay an egg like that, but you did it. So
- 19:57Speaker 8: now what do you do? Well? Do you quit? No,
- 20:00Speaker 8: you can't quit. You don't do that. Everybody's looking, everybody's watching.
- 20:05Speaker 8: What's the next thing you're gonna do? How you're gonna
- 20:07Speaker 8: rectify the situation? You know, you're gonna listen to your coaches,
- 20:10Speaker 8: You're gonna listen to your teammates, and everybody's gonna have
- 20:13Speaker 8: some input as to how it can be better on
- 20:15Speaker 8: a snap by snap basis, because that's what it's gonna take.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Uh.
- 20:18Speaker 8: Nobody in the NFL is gonna feel sorry for you.
- 20:21Speaker 8: Nobody's gonna play any uh, you know, any easier against
- 20:24Speaker 8: you and make your job less, uh less of a challenge.
- 20:27Speaker 8: They're coming after you.
- 20:28Speaker 1: They had some lopsided losses with Joe at quarterback. It happens.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Do you think it affects a team's confidence more when
- 20:36Speaker 1: the backup quarterback is in.
- 20:39Speaker 8: That's an interesting question, you know. I think as a
- 20:42Speaker 8: form alignment, I would feel worse that. You know, we
- 20:47Speaker 8: just could not figure out a way to hit it
- 20:50Speaker 8: done and to put together drives and and and make plays. Yeah,
- 20:55Speaker 8: I mean we had games like that, you know. I
- 20:58Speaker 8: mean Bob Trumpy, Kennyan and Bob Johnson when I was
- 21:02Speaker 8: younger player games like that, and those guys taught me to, okay,
- 21:05Speaker 8: just let it roll off your back like water off
- 21:07Speaker 8: off the duck's back. You know, it's there's nothing more
- 21:10Speaker 8: you can do about it. You know, if you uh,
- 21:12Speaker 8: if you harbor, if you go home and think about
- 21:14Speaker 8: it every night, you're you're you know, retarding the the
- 21:18Speaker 8: opportunity you might have to bounce back against the next opponent.
- 21:21Speaker 8: So you know, just go home at night and get
- 21:24Speaker 8: some get some rest at night. It's because I'm telling you,
- 21:27Speaker 8: after a game like this, got zero sleep. I didn't
- 21:30Speaker 8: sleep a wink man. I mean it was you know,
- 21:33Speaker 8: every time I close my eyes would be nightmares about
- 21:36Speaker 8: the football game. So but you know, you got to
- 21:39Speaker 8: get your proper rest, You got to get your proper diet.
- 21:41Speaker 8: Uh train right and uh let the trainers and equipment
- 21:44Speaker 8: guys and everybody help you and get back on course.
- 21:49Speaker 1: So it's on to Denver next Monday night. The Broncos
- 21:52Speaker 1: are one and two after losing by a field goal
- 21:56Speaker 1: to the LA Chargers. Now time for this week's fun
- 22:00Speaker 1: fact segment. On Monday September first, six days before the
- 22:04Speaker 1: season opener in Cleveland, the Bengals signed thirty four year
- 22:08Speaker 1: old eleven year VET Mike Panell, a three hundred and
- 22:12Speaker 1: thirty two pound run stopping defensive tackle. Here's defensive coordinator
- 22:16Speaker 1: Al Golden. Shortly after Panell signed with Cincinnati.
- 22:20Speaker 7: His stature, his reputation, the fact that he wanted to
- 22:23Speaker 7: be here, those are important. Those are important to us,
- 22:28Speaker 7: and he brings a physical presence, and obviously he can
- 22:32Speaker 7: still do it at his age, which is great. So
- 22:34Speaker 7: I'm excited to see where he's at today and then
- 22:37Speaker 7: go from there.
- 22:37Speaker 5: So you like about a statue?
- 22:39Speaker 7: What do I like about it?
- 22:40Speaker 1: Yes?
- 22:41Speaker 2: Have you seen him?
- 22:42Speaker 1: Once you see him, you understand why Panell has had
- 22:45Speaker 1: such a long NFL career. He is physically imposing and
- 22:49Speaker 1: hard to move. Now let's meet the person under the pads.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Time for some fun facts with defensive linemen and two
- 22:58Speaker 1: time Super Bowl champion Mike Panell. Mikey won those rings
- 23:02Speaker 1: with Kansas City in the twenty nineteen and twenty twenty
- 23:06Speaker 1: three seasons. Describe what it's like when the confetti is
- 23:10Speaker 1: falling and you've just won a super Bowl.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Oh man, it's a dream comes true.
- 23:15Speaker 10: I was fortunate enough to have my son there and
- 23:17Speaker 10: we able to have that ever lasting memory of playing
- 23:19Speaker 10: in the confetti together.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Now that is awesome. How old was he the first
- 23:24Speaker 1: time you won?
- 23:25Speaker 10: The first time we won, he was about four, But
- 23:27Speaker 10: we were in confetti the last time he was six,
- 23:30Speaker 10: So that was good.
- 23:31Speaker 1: What a great thrill that must be for him. On
- 23:34Speaker 1: what occasions do you wear either or both super Bowl rings?
- 23:39Speaker 2: Oh?
- 23:39Speaker 10: It has to be a very special occasion, usually a
- 23:41Speaker 10: ceremony or two, but usually these momentos that the family
- 23:44Speaker 10: went to see. So I bring a good little barbecue
- 23:46Speaker 10: conversation piece.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Certainly better than anything I have in my jewelry collection.
- 23:52Speaker 1: We're visiting with Mike Panell. You've lived remarkable life, and
- 23:56Speaker 1: I want to start. When you were two years old,
- 24:00Speaker 1: were diagnosed with kidney cancer. You had chemo for eighteen
- 24:05Speaker 1: months before your fifth birthday. Do you remember that at
- 24:09Speaker 1: all and how did it affect you in the years
- 24:11Speaker 1: that followed.
- 24:13Speaker 10: Fortunately, I mean, you know, under those circumstances, I didn't
- 24:16Speaker 10: have so much of a memory of it, just from
- 24:17Speaker 10: what my family told me. But you know, making it
- 24:20Speaker 10: through that, and you know I didn't really shape or
- 24:23Speaker 10: feel any differently, And you know my childhood, my family
- 24:25Speaker 10: was really supportive. So it was just a blessing. You know,
- 24:29Speaker 10: try to live every day, you know, appreciative of the
- 24:31Speaker 10: gift that was given to me.
- 24:32Speaker 1: About ten years later, you got the news that the
- 24:35Speaker 1: chances of it coming back were slim to none. But
- 24:38Speaker 1: you were still a young kid at that point. Was
- 24:40Speaker 1: the fear behind you when you got that news?
- 24:44Speaker 10: I mean absolutely, I think My mother did a great
- 24:46Speaker 10: job of displaying strength and confidence through that situation to
- 24:50Speaker 10: where I wasn't even thinking about it. So when we,
- 24:52Speaker 10: you know, thankfully got the news, I was in remission
- 24:55Speaker 10: and you know there was very very slim chance of
- 24:57Speaker 10: it coming back.
- 24:58Speaker 2: More relief from my mom.
- 24:59Speaker 10: You know, she kind of kept me in the bubble
- 25:00Speaker 10: where she always you know, had me just living life,
- 25:03Speaker 10: not thinking about it.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Speaking of your mom, going to ask you about one
- 25:06Speaker 1: other traumatic incident, and then we'll move on to football.
- 25:10Speaker 1: You grew up in Aurora, Colorado. It's obviously known for
- 25:15Speaker 1: the shooting at the movie theater. You thought that your
- 25:18Speaker 1: mom was at a movie that night, is that correct?
- 25:21Speaker 10: Yes, she was actually supposed to attend that. I believe
- 25:25Speaker 10: it was a dark night when it released. But fortunately,
- 25:27Speaker 10: and thank god, she fell asleep. So that was a
- 25:29Speaker 10: big relief for our family, and you know, just thankful
- 25:33Speaker 10: that turned out the right way.
- 25:34Speaker 1: All right, let's turn to football. You started your college
- 25:37Speaker 1: football career at Scottsdale Community College. After starring there, you
- 25:42Speaker 1: went to Arizona State. Unfortunately it wasn't a good fit.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Did you feel like your chances of doing what you're
- 25:49Speaker 1: doing now were slipping away.
- 25:52Speaker 2: No, not necessarily. My mother. You know, my family, we
- 25:55Speaker 2: always had a strong foundation.
- 25:56Speaker 10: I've always had a supreme confidence and you know, my
- 25:58Speaker 10: ability to play football through the circumstances. You know, I
- 26:03Speaker 10: always knew what I had to do to get there.
- 26:05Speaker 10: And you know, focus was more one of the bigger
- 26:07Speaker 10: things I need to get in on and maturing a
- 26:09Speaker 10: little bit. So through all that adversity, I still had
- 26:13Speaker 10: my you know, eyes and vision on the goal of
- 26:15Speaker 10: the NFL.
- 26:16Speaker 1: We're chatting with Mike Panell. You finished your college football
- 26:19Speaker 1: career at Colorado State Pueblo. It's a Division two school
- 26:23Speaker 1: playing for the thunder Wolves. It's quite a ways from
- 26:26Speaker 1: the bright lights of the NFL. What was that year like?
- 26:30Speaker 2: It was actually awesome.
- 26:31Speaker 10: You know, thank God for John Ristin that whole coaching
- 26:34Speaker 10: staff that really guided me through the process, play some
- 26:37Speaker 10: good ball. There was still getting you know, recruited, end
- 26:39Speaker 10: up getting invited to the Combine.
- 26:41Speaker 2: So it was good for me, very humbling and I
- 26:44Speaker 2: feel like what I needed at that time.
- 26:46Speaker 1: The coach you just mentioned, the head coach there, said
- 26:48Speaker 1: he knew you were different when he saw you do
- 26:51Speaker 1: a backflip. Now you are six now When was the
- 26:56Speaker 1: last time you did a backflip?
- 26:58Speaker 10: Probably in the off season. I do it a couple
- 27:00Speaker 10: of times just to test my still athletic ability.
- 27:02Speaker 2: So yeah, last offseason.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Now that is impressive. We would like to see video
- 27:07Speaker 1: of that, but I'm gonna take your word for it.
- 27:10Speaker 1: You're in your twelfth NFL season, you are playing for
- 27:13Speaker 1: your sixth NFL team. You've had a lot of teammates
- 27:16Speaker 1: over the course of the last decade. Who are some
- 27:18Speaker 1: of your closest friends on other NFL rosters?
- 27:21Speaker 2: Oh?
- 27:22Speaker 10: Man, that list is, you know, pretty long. But you know,
- 27:25Speaker 10: I had a great group of veteran guys. You know,
- 27:26Speaker 10: Clay Matthews, you know, Leonard Williams are very close. Chris
- 27:29Speaker 10: Jones is one of my best friends, and you know
- 27:31Speaker 10: we talked football all the time. George Karloff Kiss, I mean,
- 27:34Speaker 10: to Mario Davis, Tymon Matthew. The list goes on, man,
- 27:38Speaker 10: Michael Bennett. I mean, just those were guys that are
- 27:40Speaker 10: really instrumental in, you know, just the process of maturity
- 27:44Speaker 10: and becoming a veteran.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Do you look at it as a plus that you
- 27:47Speaker 1: have been with a few different teams and therefore just
- 27:49Speaker 1: have gotten to know so many great players.
- 27:52Speaker 10: Absolutely, and I think you know, in any circumstance, you
- 27:55Speaker 10: know that many teams have called you and use your
- 27:58Speaker 10: abilities on.
- 27:58Speaker 2: The football field.
- 27:59Speaker 10: You have to take that a little bit, a little
- 28:01Speaker 10: pride in that that you're able to fit in multiple systems,
- 28:03Speaker 10: that you're able to play multiple schemes with different coaches.
- 28:06Speaker 10: So for me, I take pride in it.
- 28:08Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:08Speaker 1: So I read an interview where you said, I want
- 28:12Speaker 1: to be part of something where I am more needed
- 28:16Speaker 1: than wanted. Did you feel needed when the Bengals reached
- 28:19Speaker 1: out to you?
- 28:21Speaker 10: You know, the unfortunate circumstances while I left Kansas City
- 28:25Speaker 10: and coming here and speaking with the coaching staff, you know,
- 28:27Speaker 10: the assistant coast, a GM, everybody being on the same page.
- 28:30Speaker 2: It was very welcome in and I knew that that's
- 28:32Speaker 2: where I needed to be.
- 28:34Speaker 1: You've earned the reputation of being a great run stopper.
- 28:37Speaker 1: That's a gritty job. What makes a great NFL run stopper?
- 28:43Speaker 2: I think this technique mentality.
- 28:45Speaker 10: Man, you gotta become a student of the game, and
- 28:47Speaker 10: it's just want to at the end of the day.
- 28:49Speaker 2: And I take great pride in that.
- 28:50Speaker 1: All Right, A few wild card topics. Now for Mike Panell,
- 28:53Speaker 1: who is your all time favorite athlete in any sport?
- 28:58Speaker 10: Ooh, all time favorite a fleet in any sport. I
- 29:01Speaker 10: have to give it to Mike Tyson. Why Iron, Mike?
- 29:04Speaker 10: He was just iconic, man, you know the way he
- 29:06Speaker 10: came in, you know, being the youngest heavyweight world champion ever.
- 29:09Speaker 10: He was just very you know, iconic as someone to
- 29:11Speaker 10: look up to in the nineties, what he did with
- 29:13Speaker 10: sports and business.
- 29:15Speaker 1: When you spend twelve years playing in the NFL, you
- 29:17Speaker 1: do well financially. What do you like to splur John?
- 29:21Speaker 2: Oh?
- 29:21Speaker 10: Well, now you know my kids is what my kids
- 29:23Speaker 10: likes to splurgs on. But you know, for me, it's
- 29:25Speaker 10: traveling usually. You know, I go to Tokyo every off season.
- 29:29Speaker 10: I've been to Iceland and all of the islands, Greece, Australia.
- 29:33Speaker 2: So really just traveling eating good food.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Tokyo every off season. Why Tokyo.
- 29:39Speaker 10: Oh, I love the food, love the culture. So you know,
- 29:41Speaker 10: I try to spend at least ten to twelve days
- 29:43Speaker 10: out there every off season, usually cherry blossom season, and
- 29:46Speaker 10: enjoyce food.
- 29:47Speaker 1: How did you choose it the first time?
- 29:50Speaker 10: It's just always somewhere I wanted to go, and you know,
- 29:53Speaker 10: after the season was over, COVID hit then I couldn't go.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Then I say, as soon as it opens up on
- 29:57Speaker 2: my ghost.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Do you have any talents than playing football.
- 30:01Speaker 2: I'm an amazing chef.
- 30:03Speaker 10: I can cook, you know, I can plate, So I'll
- 30:06Speaker 10: definitely put my head on that for sure.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm glad that you didn't say I'm a good cook.
- 30:11Speaker 1: You said I'm an amazing chef.
- 30:13Speaker 2: That's next level amazing chef. You know I can do
- 30:15Speaker 2: it all. Yeah.
- 30:16Speaker 1: So if you're trying to impress somebody, what's your go
- 30:19Speaker 1: to dish?
- 30:20Speaker 2: I'm I try and puss my lady friend. Or this
- 30:22Speaker 2: is just a family type thing.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Let's go lady friend a lady friend.
- 30:25Speaker 10: We're probably going to do a dry age steak, and
- 30:27Speaker 10: we're going to do a black truffle lobster risotto with
- 30:31Speaker 10: a little bit of broccolini on the side, and then
- 30:33Speaker 10: we're gonna make sure we do a dessert. I'll probably
- 30:35Speaker 10: do a pumpkin turnover with vanilla being ice cream and
- 30:37Speaker 10: candy pecans with carmar drizzle. If I'm trying to press her, Yeah, all.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Right, now you are being interviewed by the right person
- 30:43Speaker 1: because I am a foodie and that sounds amazing. What
- 30:48Speaker 1: is your favorite memory in twelve years in the NFL.
- 30:52Speaker 10: He'll do the first time I went the Super Bowl.
- 30:55Speaker 10: That was awesome. You know, my mom being there. You know,
- 30:59Speaker 10: a lot of hard work into that and just reach
- 31:01Speaker 10: a pinnacle in that moment. So one of the first ones.
- 31:04Speaker 2: All right.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Final question, This one's a little bit deep. If you
- 31:07Speaker 1: could meet anybody in history, living or deceased, who would
- 31:13Speaker 1: that person be?
- 31:14Speaker 2: Nikolai Tesla M.
- 31:16Speaker 10: Yeah, I'd definitely want to meet him and see, you
- 31:19Speaker 10: know what type of person he is.
- 31:21Speaker 2: You into inventors, absolutely, but I just there's a lot
- 31:24Speaker 2: of mystery behind him. That's someone I would definitely like
- 31:26Speaker 2: to meet.
- 31:27Speaker 1: All Right, this has been very interesting. Appreciate your time.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Best I've left the rest of the year.
