- 0:12Hello, friends. It's shown here.
- 0:14It is Monday. It is the 24th of June, and you
- 0:18and I are starting a whole new week together.
- 0:22Hello. Thank you for your company.
- 0:23Good to have you with me as we are continuing to read through
- 0:28the book of James. And today we talk about the
- 0:32tricky old thing that we all have, the tongue that we can use
- 0:36to great good or terrible evil, depending on how we use it.
- 0:41Yeah. Yeah, I'm sure we all have
- 0:43stories of the way other people have spoken words of deep,
- 0:46profound encouragement and deep, profound hurt.
- 0:49And here James encourages all of Jesus followers to use their
- 0:54tongues kindly and gently and wisely.
- 0:57Oh, we can all do with that encouragement.
- 1:00So as the week ahead rattles around in our head, we're still
- 1:05ourselves. We put it all down going to take
- 1:10a deep breath and we say, come Holy Spirit, let these words not
- 1:15just challenge us, but encourage us as saved children of the
- 1:20living God. You ready meet who?
- 1:26Let's do it. Let's read together James
- 1:28Chapter 3. Dear brothers and sisters, not
- 1:41many of you should become teachers in the church, for we
- 1:44who teach will be judged more strictly.
- 1:47Indeed, we all make many mistakes, for if we could
- 1:51control our tongues we would be perfect, and could also control
- 1:56ourselves in every other way. We can make a large horse go
- 2:00wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth, and a
- 2:04small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses
- 2:09to go, even though the winds are strong.
- 2:12In the same way the tongue is a small thing that makes grand
- 2:17speeches, but a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.
- 2:23And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of
- 2:28fire. It is a whole world of
- 2:31wickedness corrupting your entire body.
- 2:35It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by
- 2:40hell itself. People can tame all kinds of
- 2:44animals, birds, reptiles and fish, but no one can tame the
- 2:49tongue. It is restless and evil, full of
- 2:52deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord
- 2:56and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made
- 3:00in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come
- 3:04pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters,
- 3:08this is not right. Does a spring of water bubble
- 3:12out both fresh water and bitter water?
- 3:15Does a fig tree produce olives or Grapevine produce figs?
- 3:19No, and you can't draw fresh water from a salty spring.
- 3:25If you are wise and understand God's ways, prove it by living
- 3:31an honourable life, doing good works with the humility that
- 3:34comes from wisdom. But if you are bitterly jealous
- 3:39and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don't cover up the
- 3:43truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are
- 3:47not God's kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly,
- 3:51unspiritual and demonic, For wherever there is jealousy and
- 3:56selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every
- 4:01kind. But the wisdom from above is
- 4:05first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle
- 4:10at all times and willing to yield to others.
- 4:15It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds.
- 4:20It shows no favouritism and is always sincere.
- 4:25And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and
- 4:30reap a harvest of righteousness. Ah, thank you Lord Jesus for
- 4:46this encouragement to hold our own ambition and will and weighs
- 4:53more lightly. Ah, it says that your wisdom
- 4:58encourages us to yield to others, but Gee, that's hard to
- 5:02do. We've got our own thoughts and
- 5:05and our own ideas of the way things should be done, and we do
- 5:08not want to let go of them. Jesus, I pray that you soften
- 5:13our hearts. Give us a love of peace.
- 5:19Fill us with mercy and sincerity so that as we have a posture of
- 5:28love toward each other, that that would indeed shape the way
- 5:31that we relate to others, and that we would hold their wishes
- 5:38with equal esteem as our own. No, this is not easy for us, so
- 5:43we are going to need Your help. Holy Spirit, transform us.
- 5:47Let your Kingdom priorities break down our stubborn hearts
- 5:52so that we can be more like you. Jesus, you have shown us exactly
- 5:58what it looks like to love and to live this way.
- 6:01Thank you for your example and for empowering us each day to be
- 6:07more like you. So we pray all of this in your
- 6:10holy and precious name. Ah, man.
