Ethereum Firesale as Market Crashes!🔥$BTCS CEO INTERVIEW · The Paul Barron Crypto Show

Speaker 1: Let's dive into ethereum today and are whales starting to
0:03
Speaker 1: inject capital into the network. We'll break it all down
0:07
Speaker 1: for you. My name is Paul Perre. Welcome back in.
0:08
Speaker 1: But when you look at digital asset treasuries, if you
0:11
Speaker 1: kind of look at the chart right here in terms
0:14
Speaker 1: of these big yellow bubbles right there, those are acquisition points,
0:18
Speaker 1: and we continue to see acquisitions occurring within the asset treasuries.
0:24
Speaker 1: You guys have seen the ether reserve ranking right there.
0:27
Speaker 1: We're going to get of course BTCS on the show today,
0:30
Speaker 1: but you can kind of see it a bit mind
0:31
Speaker 1: leading the pack there, BTS holding the number six. So
0:34
Speaker 1: we thought let's get Charles in from BTCS to kind
0:38
Speaker 1: of break down what's happening in the markets. Charles, welcome
0:41
Speaker 1: back in. Thanks for coming in.
0:42
Speaker 2: Yeah, Paul, thanks for having me back. It's great to
0:44
Speaker 2: go to the show.
0:45
Speaker 1: So let's go into a couple of points. I want
0:47
Speaker 1: to hit on one thing that you guys put You
0:50
Speaker 1: put out this tweet over the weekend, while not material.
0:53
Speaker 1: On Saturday, BTCS picked up another million and a half
0:56
Speaker 1: in the eight in the thirty eight hundred dollars range,
0:59
Speaker 1: So goodbye for you guys, and DeFi continues to perform,
1:03
Speaker 1: so AVE was still doing great. UNISWAP running twenty four
1:06
Speaker 1: to seven, meaning you've got access. These are the kind
1:09
Speaker 1: of things that happened throughout these weekends. Why first of all,
1:12
Speaker 1: why do you think we were seeing both institutional companies
1:16
Speaker 1: like yourself in the A on the digital asset treasury
1:19
Speaker 1: groups really going all in in a time where I
1:22
Speaker 1: think a lot of traders were very, very spooked by
1:26
Speaker 1: what happened over the weekend.
1:27
Speaker 3: I mean, I think you'll always have that issue of
1:29
Speaker 3: traders trading, right, they're going to trade the short term,
1:34
Speaker 3: you know, volatility of a market, and so we have
1:36
Speaker 3: a very long term view on Ethereum. We're very bullish
1:39
Speaker 3: on what it's going to do to change the way
1:42
Speaker 3: digital assets are moved on a global scale. And so
1:45
Speaker 3: we see a market crash, I mean, that's that's the
1:47
Speaker 3: best time to buy, right. There's always that expression, like
1:49
Speaker 3: when you're getting stock advice from like the hot dog
1:51
Speaker 3: vendor in New York City, it's the time to sell.
1:54
Speaker 3: When everybody else is selling, it's the time to buy. So,
1:57
Speaker 3: you know, we saw that that kind of flash crash
1:59
Speaker 3: on Friday. Unfortunately, I was at dinner with the family,
2:01
Speaker 3: so we couldn't you know, pull the trigger.
2:03
Speaker 2: And do anything that night.
2:04
Speaker 3: But you know, we started the discussion and you know,
2:07
Speaker 3: on Saturday we had you know, picked up you know.
2:10
Speaker 2: Another million and a half of ETH.
2:12
Speaker 3: And what was great is we were able to do
2:13
Speaker 3: that on defive So have we been using traditional exchanges.
2:18
Speaker 3: It was you know, if it was cratified, we wouldn't
2:20
Speaker 3: have been able to do that, And so we were
2:21
Speaker 3: able to capture that, you know that that.
2:24
Speaker 2: It was close to the bottom as we possibly could well.
2:26
Speaker 1: And I think you hit it right here on this tweet.
2:29
Speaker 1: We saw the market flash crash, you guys remaining rock Soale,
2:32
Speaker 1: We're all we are well over collateralized with zero liquidation.
2:36
Speaker 1: So that's another advantage that you've got in terms of
2:39
Speaker 1: how you guys are playing this market, which I think
2:41
Speaker 1: is a good benefit to a lot of the people
2:44
Speaker 1: who hold btcs. When you look at institutions right now,
2:48
Speaker 1: Charles and you kind of compare this, I'll go to
2:50
Speaker 1: the the et F tracker and these outflows that we've
2:54
Speaker 1: started to see, now, typically what has happened after these
2:57
Speaker 1: massive outflows If we have started to see the price
3:00
Speaker 1: of eth start to track back up again. So this
3:04
Speaker 1: is perfect timing where it appears to be perfect timing
3:06
Speaker 1: for companies like yourself and others to really pack in
3:10
Speaker 1: a lot of opportunity of buying these dips. Is this
3:12
Speaker 1: a typical strategy that you guys are implementing.
3:16
Speaker 2: It is, And we have kind of two strategies, right.
3:18
Speaker 2: We have a fifty million dollars buy.
3:19
Speaker 3: Back in place, so we're buying back shares when the
3:21
Speaker 3: stock dips, and we have and we see opportunity on
3:25
Speaker 3: the east side where we're going to do the same.
3:27
Speaker 3: And so I think it's it's very natural that when
3:29
Speaker 3: there's a flash crash or there's uncertainty, people panic sell
3:33
Speaker 3: and that creates a great opportunity. Right when everybody is chasing,
3:37
Speaker 3: chasing the highs and there's fear of missing out and buying,
3:40
Speaker 3: that's typically when it's it's a great time to kind
3:42
Speaker 3: of take a pause and say, okay.
3:43
Speaker 2: Well, what is my valuation? Is this the right Is
3:45
Speaker 2: this the right timing to institute and move right?
3:50
Speaker 1: Well, you can kind of see it right here. This
3:52
Speaker 1: is the total ethereum spot etf net inflow outflow. These
3:55
Speaker 1: are the outflows that happen, and then we see these
3:58
Speaker 1: bounces right here, so coming off that boom, then we
4:02
Speaker 1: see the ether price start to move up, which I
4:05
Speaker 1: think is kind of in alignment with what you guys
4:07
Speaker 1: are trying to do from a strategy standpoint. When you
4:10
Speaker 1: look at ETF holders versus asset treasury holders, why do
4:15
Speaker 1: you think because this seems like a completely different audience now,
4:19
Speaker 1: like you're you're marketing to different people, kind of give
4:22
Speaker 1: me the breakdown of the two, I think.
4:24
Speaker 3: So, I mean, I think you know ETF one are
4:26
Speaker 3: just targeting and holding that underline, and so there's a
4:30
Speaker 3: lot of the investors in an ETF maybe arbitraging that
4:34
Speaker 3: against a digitalized treasury company. I've spoken to larger institutions
4:38
Speaker 3: that are actually doing that and saying, well, okay, if
4:41
Speaker 3: if a company that doesn't have much operations and all
4:43
Speaker 3: it does is hold, let's say eth, they can sell
4:45
Speaker 3: that short and buy the ETFs the in arbitrage it.
4:49
Speaker 3: So I think in the public markets there's a lot
4:51
Speaker 3: that's going to go on that is not as simple
4:53
Speaker 3: as the price coming up or down, or I'm buying
4:54
Speaker 3: loan and selling high. It's much more complex and so
5:00
Speaker 3: I mean that's why I created an opportunity for the
5:01
Speaker 3: weekend where you know, traditional markets are closed and we're
5:05
Speaker 3: able to go in there and use DeFi and you
5:07
Speaker 3: know borrow and you know, increase our exposure to ETH.
5:10
Speaker 3: And it seems like it was a pretty bid call
5:12
Speaker 3: based on you know where EATH is. You know, after
5:16
Speaker 3: the long weekend, right, it's back, it's back up in
5:18
Speaker 3: the four thousand range. I think it got up to
5:20
Speaker 3: like close to forty five hundred right, looked moment, but
5:23
Speaker 3: it's it was definitely a good opportunity.
5:26
Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I think you know, when we see the
5:28
Speaker 1: markets doing what they are right now, and I think
5:31
Speaker 1: a lot of people were in the position where if
5:33
Speaker 1: they could get into this dip, this was a great benefit.
5:37
Speaker 1: I think the key here is watching how the markets
5:39
Speaker 1: respond now from here going forward. You look at the
5:43
Speaker 1: news you put out this statement right here, big news
5:45
Speaker 1: from Sharplink Gaming. They announced tokenization of s bet and
5:49
Speaker 1: they're doing it the right way your claim here, Unlike
5:52
Speaker 1: if you look at something of what's happening over on Onto,
5:55
Speaker 1: which puts a lot more economic pressure on this around ownership.
6:00
Speaker 1: Laying to our audience why this is a good move
6:03
Speaker 1: doing it this way. I know you guys are obviously
6:05
Speaker 1: in this direction as well.
6:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, we already did this, right. We did this not
6:09
Speaker 3: on super state, we did this on upstream. So it
6:12
Speaker 3: was a platform that tokenized our stock on Ethereum splockchain.
6:15
Speaker 3: I think there's like three years ago, and it's a
6:18
Speaker 3: very lengthy process to get it's a very very hard process. Right,
6:23
Speaker 3: You've got to get liquidity and you've got to get
6:25
Speaker 3: companies on board these platforms. So I think overall, tokenizing
6:29
Speaker 3: stock the right way, and it's very important, the right
6:32
Speaker 3: way where you're actually a record holder and you actually
6:35
Speaker 3: own those securities. It is extremely fundamental in reforming how
6:41
Speaker 3: the capital markets work. I think tokenizing stock in the
6:43
Speaker 3: wrong way, and I would put that is, you know,
6:45
Speaker 3: going and getting the shares for a brokerage firm and
6:48
Speaker 3: then tokenizing those where you can have fractional shares and
6:51
Speaker 3: nobody knows who owns what because the company issues of
6:55
Speaker 3: the shares. It goes to seed and co and then
6:57
Speaker 3: it goes to the brokers and it's just a legal
6:59
Speaker 3: reperation of ownership through a chain that keeps adding layers
7:02
Speaker 3: and layers on top of which.
7:04
Speaker 2: Is how you end up with fandom shares and all
7:06
Speaker 2: these issues in the market.
7:07
Speaker 3: So I'm super exciting when someone you know and any
7:10
Speaker 3: like Sharpling comes out and says, hey, we're gonna do this,
7:11
Speaker 3: and we're.
7:12
Speaker 2: Gonna do it the right way.
7:13
Speaker 3: We're gonna do it on a platform where you actually
7:14
Speaker 3: have direct ownership of those shares.
7:16
Speaker 2: It's something we did in the past. We're not going
7:18
Speaker 2: to pioneer it again.
7:19
Speaker 3: We're gonna let other people take the arrows and make
7:21
Speaker 3: it work, and if they do a good job at
7:23
Speaker 3: it will follow suit. But it's definitely something I'm excited
7:25
Speaker 3: to see happy happened, especially on ethereum flockchain.
7:29
Speaker 1: Do you think that this solves the stock lending problem,
7:34
Speaker 1: you know, when you're dealing with real ownership of that
7:37
Speaker 1: stock applying to the tokenization process right now?
7:40
Speaker 2: It should. I mean the issue you have right now,
7:42
Speaker 2: and this is one of the reasons why we did
7:43
Speaker 2: the vivid end is if you own stock and let's
7:46
Speaker 2: say our company, your.
7:48
Speaker 3: Broker can and will load it out without notifying you,
7:53
Speaker 3: without without pay, and so someone can bet against you
7:58
Speaker 3: and then they pull all those shares together on a
8:00
Speaker 3: lending desk and then institutions can go to that lending desk,
8:02
Speaker 3: borrow those shares and bet against the fundamental investors. So
8:05
Speaker 3: if you tokenize those securities and you put them on
8:07
Speaker 3: a blockchain, you have the ability to eliminate that issue.
8:13
Speaker 3: You also don't have market makers that can print fake
8:15
Speaker 3: shares that don't exist. It's like selling that, you know,
8:17
Speaker 3: the title to a house you don't own. So it
8:20
Speaker 3: eliminates all of those issues. It's a much harder model
8:25
Speaker 3: to start from scratch and get into the market. And
8:28
Speaker 3: that's why I worry that the tokenization of stocks the
8:31
Speaker 3: brokerage firms is really a toxic thing for the capital
8:34
Speaker 3: markets because now you've got a brokerage firm which would
8:36
Speaker 3: be lending your shares, which could be you know, printing.
8:40
Speaker 2: Fake ones, which market makers do.
8:42
Speaker 3: They basically invent fake shares and sell them assuming they
8:46
Speaker 3: have the assumption that they're going to be able to
8:47
Speaker 3: rebuy those, right, So it's called market in any other businesses,
8:51
Speaker 3: it's fraud.
8:52
Speaker 2: In the stock market, it's real.
8:55
Speaker 3: And so if now they can load or make up
8:58
Speaker 3: shares or give shares to you a token in a
9:01
Speaker 3: tokenized form on a platform, it's a layer below that
9:05
Speaker 3: it's just piling on a what is already a bad system,
9:08
Speaker 3: so it's using blockchain technology to propagate and make the
9:12
Speaker 3: system it's already bad worse, versus say, hey, this technology
9:16
Speaker 3: can completely rewrite how we do things, and let's use
9:18
Speaker 3: that in.
9:18
Speaker 2: The correct way.
9:19
Speaker 1: Yeah. I think the strategies that you guys have taken.
9:22
Speaker 1: Of course, this will be interesting, especially around the pivid in.
9:25
Speaker 1: I was also looking at your tweet here when you
9:28
Speaker 1: had the pivid in issued. How many people took advantage
9:31
Speaker 1: of this? Let me kind of zoom in on that.
9:33
Speaker 3: We haven't put that out yet, but it's in terms
9:36
Speaker 3: of total number of shares, I mean, if you exclude management,
9:39
Speaker 3: it's material.
9:41
Speaker 1: Wow.
9:42
Speaker 2: And we actually already paid the.
9:43
Speaker 3: Vivid end, which is great, and we it took a
9:46
Speaker 3: little longer to reconcile some of the documents than we thought,
9:48
Speaker 3: but that got paid out last week. So we had
9:51
Speaker 3: set a record a payment data on or before October seventeen,
9:55
Speaker 3: as you are now, if you're getting cash that's going
9:58
Speaker 3: to go out on the payment ding we've actually already painted.
10:00
Speaker 3: It goes to DTCC and they're going to give it
10:02
Speaker 3: to the brokers, and the brokers are going to go
10:03
Speaker 3: pay it to the shareholders whoever they may.
10:06
Speaker 2: Be at that at that time.
10:08
Speaker 3: And so if you if you took cash, you'll get
10:10
Speaker 3: it on October seventeenth, and if you're short to stock,
10:12
Speaker 3: go pay it on October seventeenth, all.
10:14
Speaker 1: Right, And if you took eight is the same date.
10:16
Speaker 1: I'm assuming we didn't pay it the same day.
10:18
Speaker 3: We just we did it sometime last week, all right.
10:22
Speaker 3: It was it was fast, right, I mean, it was processed.
10:25
Speaker 3: You know, it took an hour to process. It was
10:28
Speaker 3: just a question of making sure we had all of
10:30
Speaker 3: the documents and pay in place that people adopted in
10:33
Speaker 3: so right now, and if you look at our business
10:35
Speaker 3: on the capital market side, you know we did the
10:37
Speaker 3: vivid end, We've got a fifty.
10:38
Speaker 2: Million dollars buy back.
10:39
Speaker 3: On the operational side, I think that's where we really
10:42
Speaker 3: want to provide investors with, you know, phenomenal exposure to
10:47
Speaker 3: ethan beyond and I see and beyond because we do
10:49
Speaker 3: more than just hold ETH. We have an operating in
10:51
Speaker 3: business where we're we're.
10:52
Speaker 2: A block builder.
10:53
Speaker 3: We represent anywhere between one to three percent of all
10:56
Speaker 3: transactions that land on ETH with our block builder, and
10:59
Speaker 3: that includes all the l two is you know that
11:01
Speaker 3: that's a growing business. It was eighty percent of our
11:03
Speaker 3: revenue in the last quarter. It was a huge driver
11:07
Speaker 3: in last year for our revenue. So we think that
11:10
Speaker 3: you know that that's a core function. So we have
11:12
Speaker 3: our Validator Operations, which is basically staking with higher yield
11:16
Speaker 3: because we do it ourselves. We have our block builder,
11:18
Speaker 3: which is high high revenue and revenue growth, and we're
11:22
Speaker 3: looking at other other ways we can generate revenue within
11:25
Speaker 3: the Ethereum.
11:27
Speaker 2: Ecosystem because it really, unlike Bitcoin.
11:29
Speaker 3: Ethereum is a you know, it's a it's a it's
11:31
Speaker 3: a digital economy and you can.
11:33
Speaker 2: Build businesses and so that's what we're really looking.
11:35
Speaker 3: At doing is like how do we expand beyond just Hey,
11:39
Speaker 3: we're a validator note operator, and.
11:41
Speaker 2: We're a block builder, and we're.
11:43
Speaker 3: We're also doing these other things. And we spent a
11:45
Speaker 3: lot of time researching that.
11:47
Speaker 2: The a lot of it's built.
11:48
Speaker 3: We're just trying to figure out the accounting, which we
11:50
Speaker 3: tend to We like to get the accounting.
11:52
Speaker 2: Right before we jump in.
11:53
Speaker 3: I think a lot of these dats have started to
11:55
Speaker 3: jump into things that they don't understand.
11:57
Speaker 2: The accounting side. They're going to pay the price later.
12:00
Speaker 2: But that's kind of you know, how we see ourselves
12:02
Speaker 2: moving forward.
12:03
Speaker 1: Okay, so you look at this flash crash, you compare
12:06
Speaker 1: how retail and traditional traders dealt with this versus institutional.
12:13
Speaker 1: Did this not really have much of an impact? Do
12:15
Speaker 1: you feel on the institutional side, and this was just
12:18
Speaker 1: another opportunity for institutions to buy into this.
12:21
Speaker 2: It depends on the institutions if they were levered.
12:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean there was I think there's one hundred
12:25
Speaker 3: and eighty million dollars of ave that was like loans
12:28
Speaker 3: and ivay that were liquidated, Which is great that that
12:30
Speaker 3: that whole ecosystem and DEFINE lending protocol held up and
12:35
Speaker 3: didn't didn't break. I think there was issues with binance
12:39
Speaker 3: if I f I recall where there was in that trash.
12:42
Speaker 3: They had issues and that really speaks to how powerful
12:45
Speaker 3: DeFi is. But back to your original questions for institutions,
12:49
Speaker 3: if they're you know, properly invested and have the right
12:53
Speaker 3: you know, risk management procedures and policies in place, I
12:56
Speaker 3: don't think it really made much of a difference at all.
12:58
Speaker 1: When you look at the ethereum right now, some adjustment adjustment. Now,
13:03
Speaker 1: do you feel like this is a forty five hundred
13:06
Speaker 1: dollars ETH first or a thirty five hundred dollars eth first?
13:09
Speaker 1: Where do you see this price going?
13:11
Speaker 3: I mean, I think I'd like to believe it's a
13:14
Speaker 3: forty five hundred, But again I'm biased. I'm bullish on ETH.
13:18
Speaker 3: I'm bullistim blockchain. So we'll see, I wouldn't It wouldn't
13:21
Speaker 3: shock me if you drop back down. These things happened
13:23
Speaker 3: the market goes down. I think the better question is
13:26
Speaker 3: where is it going to be at the end of
13:27
Speaker 3: the year, Where's it going to be a year from now,
13:29
Speaker 3: Where's it going to.
13:29
Speaker 2: Be two three years from now? And that that's where
13:33
Speaker 2: I'm most bullish. Not really.
13:35
Speaker 1: When you look at the kind of investor that you
13:37
Speaker 1: guys are are I want to say profiling but attracting,
13:41
Speaker 1: do you feel like they are in a position where
13:44
Speaker 1: they are looking at this long term like most ETH holders,
13:48
Speaker 1: or do you feel like, hey, no, this is this
13:51
Speaker 1: is kind of the slot that we're looking at for
13:54
Speaker 1: short and interim burst on investing in the stock market,
13:57
Speaker 1: and this just is our play on crypto.
13:59
Speaker 3: Well, look, I love all long term fundamental investors that
14:02
Speaker 3: believe in the business and having a mix of retail
14:05
Speaker 3: and institutional, because I think that's the perfect balance. The
14:08
Speaker 3: reality is that doesn't exist if you're a public company.
14:10
Speaker 3: Anyone can go buy your stock, and we have a
14:12
Speaker 3: lot of short term investors that look on a day
14:15
Speaker 3: to day basis. We have investors that are, you know,
14:18
Speaker 3: buying the stock and selling covered calls. We have all
14:20
Speaker 3: sorts of investors. I get emails from investors or messages
14:25
Speaker 3: on DM Well, they're looking at the technical analysis. And
14:28
Speaker 3: as far as investors go, I mean, I think it
14:30
Speaker 3: is a public company.
14:31
Speaker 2: You just you get what you get, and you know, you.
14:34
Speaker 3: Do your best to try to rope in and get
14:37
Speaker 3: fundamental investors that believe in the story and management where
14:40
Speaker 3: you're taking the company.
14:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. I'm looking back at this tweet, I
14:43
Speaker 1: was surprised at how many people think that the market
14:46
Speaker 1: is bullish right now. This of course happened. We put
14:49
Speaker 1: this out on the thirteen, just yesterday afternoon, and whether
14:52
Speaker 1: it was bullish or barrass and then we saw the pullback.
14:54
Speaker 1: So I think a lot of the market is still
14:57
Speaker 1: very very bullish on where it's going from here, especially
15:01
Speaker 1: unto the Clarity Act potentially, and a couple of rate
15:04
Speaker 1: cuts that still are going to play into this. Do
15:06
Speaker 1: you feel like that's going to change any of your business?
15:09
Speaker 1: Rate cuts, Clarity Act again, more positive nature for DeFi,
15:13
Speaker 1: and obviously crypto overall.
15:15
Speaker 3: Well, I would break into two categories. So rate cuts
15:18
Speaker 3: is just general macronach economic effects. It will effect not
15:21
Speaker 3: really our business, but probably our stock just like any
15:23
Speaker 3: other stock. The Clarity Act is really big because it's
15:26
Speaker 3: going to touch on defile.
15:27
Speaker 2: We'll see where that goes.
15:29
Speaker 3: My recollection of where it left off is it's in
15:32
Speaker 3: the Senate, there's some changes that it may not be great.
15:34
Speaker 3: It's obviously back to the House. You know, Congress is
15:37
Speaker 3: going to have to come to a consensus on what
15:40
Speaker 3: it will be and then get that to the President
15:42
Speaker 3: for signature.
15:43
Speaker 2: So I think that could be.
15:45
Speaker 3: One of the biggest catalysts, especially if it's if it
15:49
Speaker 3: comes out with positive regulation for DeFi, where it could
15:54
Speaker 3: really drive you know, the price right that could be
15:57
Speaker 3: something where you could have you could see a twenty
15:59
Speaker 3: five fifth the hundredercent price increase based on having positive
16:04
Speaker 3: regulation in the market, so that we can seeing.
16:07
Speaker 2: Adoption when that occurs.
16:09
Speaker 3: Who knows right like, we've got to come and shut down,
16:12
Speaker 3: you know, when things pick back up and get back
16:14
Speaker 3: on track, we'll see yeah.
16:15
Speaker 1: For sure. Listen, you guys should keep a track on
16:19
Speaker 1: the Strategic Eth Reserve listing right there. You'll see BTCS
16:22
Speaker 1: holding in right there. Check them out, learn a little
16:25
Speaker 1: bit more. If you're getting into digital asset treasures, which
16:27
Speaker 1: seems to be one of the biggest things I'm getting
16:30
Speaker 1: questions on. Is I think retail is also waking up
16:33
Speaker 1: to this now going wait a minute, this is kind
16:35
Speaker 1: of like micro strategy, and they kind of know what
16:37
Speaker 1: that is from a bitcoin stance, but they're learning about
16:40
Speaker 1: it here on ethereum. So Charles, has been great having
16:43
Speaker 1: you on today. Thank you so much. We'll keep a
16:45
