- 2:30host for the next half hour, Thank you and his chapel, and good
- 2:32evening, ladies and gentlemen. In tonight's story, Nicky and I quite unexpectedly
- 2:37become involved in the crucial game of the World series. I call it Adventure
- 2:43of the World Series Crime the series, and you all know what's happened.
- 3:06The Eagles won the first three games, then the Larks came back to take
- 3:09the fourth and fifth games, and now the Larks are leading in the sixth
- 3:13game, three to two. Here's the pitch four four, the walk for
- 3:19Henderson. Tho's the bases for the Eagles. Two outs. We'll see.
- 3:23Now, well, here's the Great Sparks himself coming to battle. Let's see.
- 3:27Then'll score two runs, the Eagles will win four to three, and
- 3:30the World Series will be over. But if the Larks can stop Sparky again,
- 3:34the series will be all tied. The three games apiece and the playoff
- 3:38game tomorrow. There is strike no. Everybody's asking what's happened to Sparky,
- 3:45champion batterer of the major leagues. He was an Arkansas Tornado in the first
- 3:49three series games, hit over five hundred, won the first three games for
- 3:53the Eagles, almost single handed, and then he folded. It's a pitch
- 3:55Franke two two. Sparky didn't get a hit in the fourth game, hard
- 4:01offense, and today, in three official tries, the Great Sparks has popped
- 4:04up once and struck out twice with men in scoring positions. There is all
- 4:13that's one and two on Sparky. You Now, there's the ugly rumors around,
- 4:15but take it from your uncle Ted, they're just malarkey, you know,
- 4:18you've heard them. The Sparky's been drugs. Sparks has sold out to
- 4:21the gamblers. It's here, it is stake three s Fucky didn't even lift
- 4:27his bat off his shoulder. He's out. Well that's the game. Both
- 4:31guys it out in three games of ease. But what's happened to start?
- 4:35Mister Dayton, owner of the Eagles, wants to know. Mac McCune,
- 4:40fighting manager of the Eagles, wants to know what's happened to Sparky. Yeah,
- 5:02no, check a man up mister Dayton's private office. What no pray?
- 5:11Listen Weisenheimer. I'll give it to you in plain English. There ain't
- 5:14no more tickets. Oh hello, mister mclub boy said, yeah, he's
- 5:19waiting for you. Say, mister mcclub, I want to kick you off.
- 5:24The boss said, me and the boyfriend could see the day's game from
- 5:26his box. Well you know what that means. Yeah, usual Dayton's ducking
- 5:31out in the pinch. Well, arrestlers still think you can lick them bombs,
- 5:35mister mclub say, Susie want to see me mister Dayton. Oh,
- 5:43come in, Mac Mac, I'm leaving you in complete charge. Going away
- 5:47to day mister Dayton, I notice you have your golf clubs already. Yes,
- 5:51I'm running out of the country club. I couldn't stand the strain of
- 5:55the final game. Mac, my heart you know, yeah, go ahead,
- 5:59I'll phone you the result. Will It's not as if I were running
- 6:02out on you or the team Mac COEs not mister Dayton, your bench box,
- 6:08of course, but you were leaving me in charge. Look, Mike
- 6:11to McCune, He's had half a dozen chances to win the series in the
- 6:14last three games. And what's he done? Docky coos high call. He
- 6:17couldn't bet a ball with a coal shot at a ball bat bat. Oh
- 6:23what a fool I've been, of course the bat. What are you raving
- 6:26about? Mac? Look, mister Dayton, if your heart can stand the
- 6:29strain of making one phone call before you go out to play golf, just
- 6:32one, mind you we can still win this series. Phone call. I
- 6:36want a detective. Pay any fee, he asked, but have him here
- 6:40in fifteen minutes. A detective? What detective? Mac? The best in
- 6:43the world, mister Dayton. If there's one man can save this world series
- 6:46for us, it's every queen and there, ladies and gentlemen, you have
- 7:04the beginning of our mystery. We'll be back in just a moment to tell
- 7:08you more. Hurse Ernest Chappell. You know nobody minds hard work these days
- 7:13because we're working for victory. But what are you going to do when you're
- 7:16stopped by a common sick headache? I must edith I the Fremont Avenue,
- 7:20Los Athos, California, has the answer to that, she writes. I
- 7:24work at the Red Cross seven dollars a day, five and a half days
- 7:28a week, and spend what time I have left practicing my music. This
- 7:31constant working study is quite a strain, and sometimes I get a common sick
- 7:36headache and my nerves feel on edge. Well one evening, while listening to
- 7:41your very entertaining ELLERI Crean program, I heard your clever educated train tell about
- 7:46Belmo Seltz, and I decided to try it the next time I got a
- 7:49headache. Was I delighted with a quick effect of relief. I got hi.
- 7:55In just a short time, I head fell a lot better, and
- 7:58my jumpy nerves began to come I'm I told everyone at the office about it,
- 8:03but most of them informed me that they were already familiar with Blmo Seltzer's
- 8:07grand health and had been relying on it for a long time. Now I'm
- 8:11never without Blumo Seltzer. I keep a bottle in my desk at the office
- 8:15and another at home. And that's a wise idea for everybody now. These
- 8:18days, you never know when you're liable to get a common sake headache.
- 8:22So if you don't already have a big blue bottle of Bromo Seltzer in your
- 8:24whole medicine chest, get one tomorrow for sure. And how back to our
- 8:41mystery. In answer to Mac Mclub's phone call, Ellery Nikki the Inspector and
- 8:45Sergeant Veeley, I've just arrived. Oh Mac, Hello Hillary. You know
- 8:50my father Inspector Queen Inspected. I am Max, Sergeant v Lee and this
- 8:54is my secretary NICKI Porter. When they heard you on me on a case,
- 8:58Mac, I couldn't shake him off. There's anything we can do to
- 9:01help the Eagles win. Mac, Thanks, Inspector Queen were Eagle fans,
- 9:03all of it. We need them all this border. I got a weak
- 9:05Sorry on eagles, Mac, you want to flock up other sergeant mister Dayton
- 9:11in a place where he won't bother us, Ellary. If you can solve
- 9:13a mystery in three hours, we've still got a chance to win. If
- 9:18you can't. Doesn't sound like Mac mccoon talking three hoards. Give me the
- 9:22facts, Well, ELLERI, you know ball players, they're all kind of
- 9:24superstitious. Yeah, remember how Babe Ruth always touched second base on his way
- 9:30in from right field at the end of Rubbery Emmings. Spocky's worst, Sergeant.
- 9:33He's got a pet bat. Ellery's got to find one of those nasty
- 9:37things that fly around at night. Mac's a baseball manager, Nick, you're
- 9:41not a zoo keeper. It means a baseball bat. Go on, Mac,
- 9:43Well, Ellary with that pet bat of his. Spocky's the greatest hitterer
- 9:48in the game today. Lenardo is just a bomber. Hold it, Sergeant
- 9:52Mac. What happened to Spark's bat? And when? On the morning after
- 9:54the third game? Spocky told me about it, But it went clean out
- 9:56of my head. Somebody stole his bat. Ah. If Sparky gets back
- 10:01his bet, you think you'll snap out of a slump neck, inspector,
- 10:05I'll eat your bed and the launch dug out. If he don't. Ellery's
- 10:09been asked to find stolen jewels, stolen documents, but a stolen baseball?
- 10:13Dat why Nikki Matt with the bat stolen from the clubhouse and not Wellerwy Spocky
- 10:18was so nervous about it he wouldn't leave it in the regular bat fack.
- 10:22He took it home with him. Where did he live? Well, Spocky
- 10:24got married just before the series well series of Sparky honeymoon sort of, Miss
- 10:28Porter. So mister Dayton gives Spocky and Lily that's Poky's wife, the use
- 10:33of his apartment during the series. They've been living there. What are we
- 10:35waiting for? Let's go his Dayton's apartment. Okay, Mac, Many,
- 10:56you park out here in the hall and watch this front door. Huh.
- 10:58We don't want to be the stair lad ey knock spiked. They ain't raading
- 11:05me out in the call in the case like this, Baily, Yes,
- 11:07sir, Mac come on here, I love Pocky. This is Inspector Queen,
- 11:13his son and miss Corner. I'm gonna meet the missus Lily. You
- 11:20see. It's awful good to you folks to help Sparky. I reckon,
- 11:22I'm past being healthily. Maybe not, mister Sparks. When did you first
- 11:26discover your bat was stolen? Well, mister Queen, I always put the
- 11:31bat in the hall closet there the first thing I woke up the morning of
- 11:35the fourth game. Well, I look in the closet and Uncle Sam,
- 11:39that's my pet name for the bat. You see, Pocky calls everything we
- 11:41owned by a pet name. Mister Queen, it was skunk back holding the
- 11:46boss of the chickens. Starkey calls him Hitler. And I'm getting to like
- 11:48you, Spocky. The bat was missing, Sparky when you first looked in
- 11:52the closet that morning, no inspector that time, Uncle Sam standing there,
- 11:56all right, But then all that more, and then we have visitors,
- 12:01and when they go away, and Lily and me get ready to mosey over
- 12:05at the ballpark while I opened the closet door and Uncle Sam's gone. How
- 12:09many visitors did you have? Wasn't it three? Lily Horst Parker for visitors,
- 12:13that means one of them must be the thief reconsole, Miss Porter,
- 12:18I wasn't counting mister Dayton, Lily, He's not exactly a visitor. This
- 12:22apartment being his well, mister Dayton, come first. He forgot to take
- 12:26his calf bag with him when he gave up this apartment, so he comes
- 12:28to pick it up. Tell mister Queen who the other three was? Spoky?
- 12:33Okay, Mac first there was Bigolie, big Dame Gambler. I smell
- 12:39a rat And what did mister f want? Well, it's it's sort of
- 12:43personal. Oh, Spocky, you mustn't hold anything back if and you want
- 12:46mister Queen to help Lily's right, Spocky, Well, mic I love Hellery.
- 12:50Spocky's the idol of sports fans all over the country, and he deserves
- 12:54to be. He's such a good example for the kids. Don't drink,
- 12:58don't smoke, a square shooter. But he's got one weakness that's gonna get
- 13:01him in a heap of trouble. It already has. I know, I
- 13:05read about it in the papers. That's where they pitch gambling. Looks that
- 13:09way, Dad, Commissioner had you on the carpet about it, didn't he,
- 13:11Sparky, Yeah, inspect, but Spoky won't listen. He wastes most
- 13:16of his dough paying off. Yeah. I tried so hard to make him
- 13:18stop. I even refused to marry him until he promised to quit. Oh,
- 13:24Nicky, he didn't quit. Be a good girl, Nikki and keep
- 13:30Missus Spark's company in the next room. So you old for girley money.
- 13:33Sparky and he came here yesterday morning to clickton. When you start talking about
- 13:39gambling, Spoky shuts up like a clam. Yes, who's outside? Ask
- 13:43him to see Sparky? All right, speak of the devil, Sergeant huh
- 13:46A big shot for Gary V All right, inspector, step into the parlor,
- 13:52mister Fly. Be careful with your offends you from time. Oh,
- 13:56I beg your father, Missus Sparks come back tomorrowing. Well now now I
- 14:00don't know. I'll be too late to expect the queen and I see you
- 14:03first when Umpire's eye you'll not see him. Be goodful. How you talking,
- 14:07mister Pheli Sargent Ready you pig my business with mister Spots. You can
- 14:11wait? You going? Wait, mister, what do you want? I'm
- 14:16seeing half things are Maybe I better tell the truth, the truth you told
- 14:20me. Came to see you the other day about the money you own,
- 14:24Spots. I didn't want to worry you. Mac mister Peggoli here, take
- 14:28care of what you spilled here? He was willing to forget my I oh
- 14:31you if, mister Spots, I wanted you? If what if I threw
- 14:35the series? Mister queen, that's it, You're thirty back drop. Now,
- 14:43I'll give you a demonstration of the famous you are. Ah's better fireworks.
- 14:52Now, mister did you have any bundles or packages with you? And
- 14:56you visited this apartment the other day all of a sudden not talking English?
- 15:01Huh No, he didn't have mister Quinny or sure Sparky. Did he wear
- 15:05a top coat? Nauser? Okay? And him I Phoebe put a tail
- 15:09on. Though. I think we'll be seeing more of mister pigg Come on,
- 15:13pig back Parky. Who were the other two visitors you had? Who
- 15:18came? After all? After mister comes Colin Colin, manager of the lox
- 15:24YEP, and after Collins comes Buck Fisher. Fisher's the first basement on your
- 15:28own team, Mac, isn't he? Yeah? Spoky the fuck out of
- 15:31the batting Championship by three points less than two hours left. Times running out,
- 15:37Dad, You and Mac tackle manager Colins the locks Nicky and I will
- 15:39call him the vanquished Eagle batsman Buck Fisher. You'll find balls up in the
- 15:43stadium now already good. Let's say this time, Dad, we check with
- 15:46each other at the stadium. Barston give us the other details on the way
- 15:48over. Hurry at Balans. We've known each other since you're sand that day.
- 16:04We don't have to spy around. Well, what's on your mind?
- 16:07Inspector Dalans wanted you, the manager of the opposition team, drop into see
- 16:12Sparks, the star batter of Max's team during the World Series. It's your
- 16:15little idea, Mac, try to frame me just before the start of the
- 16:19last game. You know me better than that, Collins, Okay, Inspector.
- 16:26I ran up to see Spoky about our bet. Not bet two thousand
- 16:30bucks steven money on the World Series winner. Spocky better team to win,
- 16:33Collins, that's a hot one. You ever hear a Spoky betting against himself?
- 16:40Sure he better. I'm his team, but his team taking a first
- 16:42three games. I thought Spocky might be willing to raise the andes at the
- 16:47big ards the courts, but no, soap Spocky said no, he was
- 16:52wearing Mac. But his wife said, Nick, Collins, are you wearing
- 16:56a top coat that morning for me a top coat, Miss Weather. Have
- 17:03any bundles with you? Crime? And he no, say what's this all
- 17:08about? Anyway? I get it? Man, Let's go Mac just a
- 17:11minute, Inspector Collins. Yeah, Mac, who you pitching today? Seven
- 17:18Knight's paper? There's a daughter of the Eagles locker room nicky company Eagle.
- 17:40Excuse me? Are you Buck Fisher? Yeah? See out in the field,
- 17:45o you? But don't you know ellery Queen never heard of him?
- 17:49Lady, Hey, you're not the new sports writer for the Herald as tight.
- 17:53No, Fisher, I'm a detective. Detective because a few simple questions.
- 17:59Mister Fisher, why did you pay a visit to Sparks the morning of
- 18:02the fourth game? Sparky and I had a bet off season man who'd wind
- 18:06up at the best batting average. Sparky won by three points and his hide
- 18:11and I saw him do it, made five hits in the last game of
- 18:14the season. Oh what so, why'd you drop him to see Sparky that
- 18:18morning? Fisher? Oh? We had another bet who'd get the most hits
- 18:21in the series. Sparky hit like a hotsifire the first three games, but
- 18:25I figured it forward. That morning. I comes up when I says,
- 18:26Sparky, how about doubling the bet? Did he Fisher? He says yes,
- 18:30but his wife says no, he said, what's the matter, Sparky,
- 18:33cold feet? Sparky says okay ah. Then his wife's that's the water.
- 18:37What's so? I beat it? But the double BET's on. Now
- 18:41there's a signal for batting practice. I gotta go out and clout a couple.
- 18:45Oh, mister Fisher, Yeah, did you wear a top coat that
- 18:48morning? Or carry any packages? One? No, miss Porter, why
- 18:52did you ask Fisher those last two questions? If you can ask him of
- 18:56Pegoli, mister Queen, I can ask him of Fisher. That's what I
- 19:00come on, miss copycat. Let's find that from the stature you learned exactly
- 19:21as much from Collins as Ellery and I did from Bucks Fisher. Yeah,
- 19:25yeah, Nikki, a great big goosey uh cowery game will be starting in
- 19:30a few minutes. Are we getting anywhere from well that we haven't even got
- 19:34the first space? Hillary, when on ever finding that back? And when
- 19:38we start? I wouldn't say that there, don't tell me? You know,
- 19:42yes, I know where Sparky is bad is Nikki. There's only a
- 19:47fifty fifty chance that's still there. Dad, step aside with me. I'll
- 19:49tell you what to do. Now you tell up ellery and his petty secret.
- 19:53Yeah, I wonder what's cooking? Nearly two hours instead made that phone
- 20:11called Nicki and no sign of anybody. You'll wear out the sidewalk gallery.
- 20:15Two hours waiting at the ballplayer's entrance, and we could have been inside with
- 20:18Dad and Villie watching the game. Dad, what any is it? Yes
- 20:22to the night son? What's this going now? Rodgers sasporter one? Enough
- 20:27at a large give up ellery. It's too late now. You must have
- 20:32been wrong this time, Nikki, I tell you I wasn't wrong. I
- 20:33couldn't have been. How can I go in there and face mac McCune without
- 20:37that pet batter spot You can't do the impossible ellery he gave you only a
- 20:41few hours, Nikki, this is it? Yes, here it is the
- 20:52bat. Hooray Mack mack, We've got it. Are in? Time's in
- 21:07the plue? Why the snakes of Saint Patrick? It is? It's Pocky's
- 21:11bat. He's false for it, bull and cross Pocky back. He's on
- 21:15his way to the plane right for the place to fight one. Thank how's
- 21:18the same. But we're behind in this place the same as Jesse wonder nothing
- 21:21last the nine faces fulled two out of pockey up farocks get a hit,
- 21:25Any hit will drive in two runs if we win target check all right?
- 21:29Out of your feet, Andy, what is it? Mac? You're not
- 21:30benching your bat's pocky your own fat here. Now go on out there and
- 21:36use it, Uncle Sam. Don't you worry, Mac, Good old Uncle
- 21:41Sam won't let you down. One side. Fellas there, ladies and gentlemen,
- 21:59you have the mystery, and I hope with solution as well. Nikki,
- 22:02will you be good enough to introduce our guest. I'm Chad to Techtis
- 22:04for this evening. Well, Ellery, our guests tonight are certainly the right
- 22:10men to try to solve this mystery, because both of them know just about
- 22:12all there is to know about baseball. And when I tell you who they
- 22:17are, you'll see what I mean. Our first guest is Ken Sears,
- 22:22capture of the New York Yankees and son of Ziggie Sears, famous National League
- 22:26umpire. You can be sure that when the Yankees meet to Saint Louis Cardinals
- 22:30for the first World Series game October fifth, more than a few eyes will
- 22:34be watching Ken Sears. All right, Nikky, I'll agree the first guest
- 22:37knows baseball, But what about the second. Well, our second guest isn't
- 22:41a ball player, but that doesn't mean he doesn't know about baseball. He's
- 22:45Art Flynn's business manager of the Sporting News, the Bible of the baseball world.
- 22:52Mister Flynn has been at the Sporting News for sixteen years and has covered
- 22:56every World Series in that time. Mister Flint is the Sporting News a tremendous
- 23:00international circulation, So many of its old readers are now in the service but
- 23:03still yelling for their copies, and incidentally they get them. And now,
- 23:10Ellice, mister Sears, I have two questions for you this evening. Number
- 23:14One, where did I find Sparky's bat? And two? Who stole it?
- 23:21Well, mister Queen, I believe you found that bat and mister Dayton's
- 23:25golf bag. To Dayton's golf bag, and how did it get there?
- 23:30Well, I believe mister Dayton visited Sparky's apartment that morning, and I believe
- 23:37he stole that bat and went out the golf course to play golf and missed
- 23:42that last game of the world series. Thank you very much, mister serious.
- 23:48And now, mister Flynn, where did I find Sparky's bat and who
- 23:52stole it? I think I've got to agree with Ken sears ellery that he
- 23:59found it in the golf bag because no one had a top code. And
- 24:06secondly, i'd say that when that the person that put it there was Lily
- 24:12the White because when they were talking about if he threw the series and she
- 24:18walked out and said no when they wanted to double his bet. It's the
- 24:22case of that famous French saying la femme, Thank you very much, mister
- 24:30Flynn, and mister Sears. You'll have to wait a moment to find out
- 24:33whether you solve the night's mystery correctly. And in the meanwhile, he's Ernest
- 24:37Chapel, who it develops is up on his modern slang that really means I'm
- 24:42hep to the jive, I suppose, and all because I happened to mention
- 24:45to him that when you have a headache, you just can't be on the
- 24:48beam. In other words, you don't feel one. But if you're hip,
- 24:52that is to say, if you know your way around. The chances
- 24:56are that you know our bromo Seltzer gives quick, effective relief from the three
- 25:00way misery that being off in the company a common cickette. Yes, Romosltzer
- 25:04acts three ways. I'm head, nerves and stomach. Try romosltz the next
- 25:10time you have a common cickettache. See how quickly it has you're cooking with
- 25:14gas or, as we all fogy say, feeling more like your old self
- 25:18again. But hellery, where did you find the doll? That was simple,
- 25:30Nikki? Once I knew the facts, only four people dayton Ta,
- 25:33Goolie, Collins and Fisher visited Sparky between the last time he saw the bat
- 25:37in the closet and the time he saw it was gone. So obviously one
- 25:41of those four stole the bat from the apartment. Well, I said that
- 25:45long ago, ellery, But which one? The important question wasn't who took
- 25:48the bat, Nikki, but how How was the bat taken out of the
- 25:52apartment under Spark's nose without spark seeing it strike one? After all, a
- 25:57bat at the size of Alpa thirty six inches long a solid hunk of hiccary,
- 26:02So that's why he asked about the packages and the topcoat, said right,
- 26:04Dad, But none of the four visitors carried a package or or a
- 26:07topcoat. The topcoat idea with a shot in the dark. Actually, you
- 26:11can't conceal a thirty six inch baseball bat under a coat inside a trouser lake
- 26:17for that matter, and still walk like a human being. Yet the bat
- 26:21was taken from the apartment. How there was one article taken out of that
- 26:26apartment that was big enough to conceal a thirty six inch baseball bat. But
- 26:32Spark said nothing went outside, wrong, Dad, Spark said, one thing
- 26:36did go out. Remember dayton golf bag Titan, the are the eagles,
- 26:41the one who want the spars his apartment. That's right. Dayton came back
- 26:45for his golf bag, Spock, he said, and with the top zipper
- 26:47it over, it is held a baseball that can not be seen a sprig
- 26:52toe. Now, either Dayton put the bat in his golf bag or someone
- 26:56else did. If Dayton were the thief, the first thing he do once
- 26:59he was out of the hotel was get rid of the bat. But if
- 27:02someone else put the bat and the Dayton's bag, and Dayton hadn't yet looked
- 27:04inside, the bat would still be there? To Nick, he ever told
- 27:07me to phone the chief of police nears to Dayton's country club. She rushed
- 27:11to the cup, found Dayton's bag still an open and the bats inside.
- 27:15Mister Dayton can't be the thief. And there's well too. Who stole the
- 27:21bat? Who get it? Wa? Who hit it in Dalton's gob bat?
- 27:25Well? Who was in the apartment when Dayton took away his bag?
- 27:27Not the goalie, not Columns, no Fisher, None of them had arrived
- 27:30yet only two people were there besides Dayton, Sparks and his wife. If
- 27:36Sparky steal his own bat, would he deliberately get rid of the one thing
- 27:40he needed most to win? His bat now couldn't be Sparked then it must
- 27:44be his own white Missus Sparks saw that bat. He's the only one left,
- 27:48So Sparky's wife must be the thief. I'll pray my stars, but
- 27:55he take every QUI, Missus Sparks, will will you come here? Please
- 28:00want me? Mister Quinn. You've heard what I just said, Lily,
- 28:03Why did you do it? Yeah? I thought if Sparky lost his pet
- 28:07back, he'd lose his pets and Colin's incisions put all in all the others.
- 28:11I thought telling surance, but I told you I didn't realize what it
- 28:17was meaning. Mac and the Sparky's team makes no fans. Well, I
- 28:22was scared stark Gun enough Powell Llery, do we have to tell Sparky if
- 28:29everything comes out all right? I don't see why. Nikki, Oh,
- 28:30you're a darling. Hi, don't forget Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam came through
- 28:41him the clutch and he always will. And there, ladies and gentlemen,

- 31:25Radio with Adam Graham and now let's get back into the show. Welcome back.
- 31:34I will say whoever wrote this script didn't really have a good understanding of
- 31:41the rules of Major League Baseball on betting on baseball, because Rule twenty one,
- 31:49which basically has been in place since the Great Scandal Involving the Black Saw
- 32:00nineteen nineteen, has some pretty clear guidelines. Any player or person connected with
- 32:08a club who shall offer or give any gift or reward to a player or
- 32:13person connected with another club for services rendered or supposed to be or to have
- 32:16been rendered in defeating or attempting to defeat a competing club. And any player
- 32:22or person connected with a club who shall solicit or success or accept from a
- 32:28player connected with another club any gifts or reward for any such services rendered or
- 32:32supposed to have been rendered, who having been offered any such gift or rewards,
- 32:37shall fail to inform as league president or the commissioner immediately of such offer,
- 32:40and of all facts and circumstances. Therewith shall be declared and eligible for
- 32:45not less than three years. And any player, umpire club employee who shall
- 32:54bet any sum whatsoever upon any ballgame in connection with which the batter has no
- 33:00duty the better has no duty to perform, shall be declared ineligible for one
- 33:05year. And any player, umpire, club, or league official or employee
- 33:09who shall bet any somewhatsoever upon any baseball game and connection which the better has
- 33:14a duty to perform, shall be declared permanently ineligible. And I think particularly
- 33:21the bet with the opposing manager would fall under that ladder rule. So yeah,
- 33:30this was not something that you could have gotten away with in nineteen forty
- 33:36three and particularly not have it just kind of excused as a minor fault.
- 33:40I also find it kind of weird that Inspector Queen and Bealley, you know,
- 33:47come along to help Ellery and the investigation. I guess things must have
- 33:52been slow over in New York City homicide, though I guess it is nice
- 33:57to get a non murder case. I don't know how fair it was for
- 34:00Ellery to be asking about the overcoade if he knew that it couldn't be smuggled
- 34:07out, because really that was a red herring for the audience at home.
- 34:12At any rate, we do turn to some listener comments and feedback. Sarah
- 34:15says, I just wanted to say that I've been a big fan of your
- 34:20podcast for the past three months since I discovered it. I've always been a
