- 0:30Hello everyone, this is the Doctor Randy show conversations
- 0:34at the intersection of beauty, innovation and real business
- 0:38growth. I'm your host, Doctor Randy, and
- 0:40I'm so glad you're here today. Today's guest is a true industry
- 0:44builder. She began her career at Estee
- 0:47Lauder and went on to lead some of the most forward thinking
- 0:50brands in beauty and biotech. She is now the CEO, the skin
- 0:54care company focused on clinical results with peptides leading
- 0:58the charge and under her leadership, Hydro Peptide has
- 1:01become the go to for professionals who want real
- 1:05science, real luxury and real results.
- 1:08Please welcome Annette Rubin. Thank you so much, Randy.
- 1:11It's. Such a pleasure to be here with
- 1:13you today. We're so excited to have you on
- 1:15the show, so we will jump right in.
- 1:18I've had the pleasure of trying the products.
- 1:20I'm blown away. So thank you for sharing them
- 1:23with me. And it's no wonder that you have
- 1:25a cult following with celebrities like Drew Barrymore.
- 1:29I've written what she had to say about your Eye Authority Eye
- 1:32Cream and I already feel the same way.
- 1:34So I'm going to jump in with a couple of questions for you.
- 1:38So what was the first thing you wanted to change when you
- 1:42stepped into the CEO role as at Hydropeptide?
- 1:46It's a great question, the founders.
- 1:48Had really developed beautiful. Products and they had.
- 1:52Early. Adopters in the professional
- 1:53skin care community and as. Great as they were.
- 1:57Everything that I look to needs scientific validation tied to
- 2:04it. So they had some great ideas and
- 2:07they were making great. Products but I.
- 2:09Wanted to surround them and. All of our products with the
- 2:13right expertise that could guide our.
- 2:16Formulations and pass. Efficacy tests the strictest.
- 2:20With flying colors so really wanted to add that additional
- 2:23layer of scientific validation into everything we.
- 2:27Do here at Hydropeptide. Yeah.
- 2:29And I've read so much about that.
- 2:31There is a lot of science behind that, which leads me to my next
- 2:34question of what if something about leading a clinical skin
- 2:39care brand versus any other skin care brand that people on the
- 2:44outside completely underestimate?
- 2:47That's a really good. Question.
- 2:48I think the amount of investment that we put in research and
- 2:52development. Is huge.
- 2:55It's. Really important for
- 2:56scientifically grounded companies.
- 2:59To. Really think about technology
- 3:02and innovation in a very forward thinking way.
- 3:05It's what we do here at Hydropeptide.
- 3:07So as we look for partnerships that are.
- 3:10Investing in the science of peptides.
- 3:13Whether that's what we do with US CS regenerative tissue
- 3:18Laboratory, where there's incredible research.
- 3:20Happening on how to really create and sustain.
- 3:24Healthy tissue. From all of the.
- 3:27Incredible peptides. That have been created by ON
- 3:30Biosciences so we've got. Incredible strategic
- 3:33partnerships Where? We are in a position to bring
- 3:37forward and advance. The research that they're.
- 3:40Doing in really compelling ways into the professional skin care
- 3:44market. Yeah, I read a little bit about
- 3:47the partnership with USC. It sounds like you're doing
- 3:51groundbreaking things together. I think we'd all like to hear a
- 3:54little bit more about that. Absolutely our partnership.
- 3:57Began with Doctor Marcel Nimny. He's regarded as.
- 4:01The godfather of collagen. He wrote the book.
- 4:04On collagen, he's the one that founded Type 3 Collagen and he.
- 4:09Had devoted a. Huge amount of his research into
- 4:13understanding the. Best ways to produce healthy
- 4:17collagen It was through his research.
- 4:20Of finding amino acids. How you could support?
- 4:24Those amino. Acids with sulfur donors.
- 4:26That was really interesting to us and so.
- 4:29We forged a partnership. With Doctor Marcel Nimni.
- 4:32To. Further advance the science that
- 4:35he was doing in bringing those amino acids, the sulfur donors,
- 4:39adding some of our peptides and antioxidants together in a
- 4:43complete formulation that is transformational in skin care
- 4:49and its ability to actually stimulate very.
- 4:53Healthy collagen production. And I think that's an
- 4:56interesting element. To how we think.
- 5:00About creating skin care. There's a lot of peptides out
- 5:03there. We don't just start and stop.
- 5:05With peptides we actually. Know that peptides can be
- 5:08incredibly effective in signaling for a specific action,
- 5:13but we need to make sure that the skin.
- 5:15Cells have the vital. Nutrients.
- 5:18Where they're able to. Actually turn on and do what the
- 5:22peptides asking it. To do so, we take a 360.
- 5:25Approach in thinking through our formulas to really make.
- 5:28Sure that they're able. To drive that end.
- 5:32Result which is that. Healthy skin outcome that we're
- 5:35all looking for. So peptides are the backbone of
- 5:39hydro peptide obviously. And we've heard a lot of
- 5:43different buzzwords in the skin care market right now.
- 5:46We hear exosomes, we hear actives, we hear vitamin C.
- 5:50What makes peptides? And, and I've been studying and
- 5:54researching this for a long time and I use all the different
- 5:57peptides out there. I got into copper peptides over
- 6:00the last year even. So what makes the peptides more
- 6:04than just a buzzword? It's a super buzzy buzzword.
- 6:08Right now and we. Like to say that?
- 6:10We were working with peptides. Before they were cool and it's.
- 6:13Because there is almost endless opportunity to continue to
- 6:19develop and create new. Peptides to.
- 6:22Signal for the right signaling that needs to be done in.
- 6:26Order to get that. Outcome we're looking for
- 6:30peptides are signal specific and so there's so much work we can
- 6:35do to help optimize our skin. Help.
- 6:38Through the power of peptides. I think what we like to do too
- 6:42is yes, we are leaders. In regenerative peptide skin
- 6:47care. But we're not.
- 6:48Just peptides. We know that you can optimize
- 6:52the. Way a peptide performs through
- 6:55also. Combining it with antioxidants
- 6:58through other amino acids. There's a lot of other.
- 7:02Ways that you can think about the advancements in peptides.
- 7:07Through really clever. Combinations.
- 7:09We're working on some really. Cool.
- 7:11Advanced technology right now. Which is really a.
- 7:15Peptide, vitamin C combination, the other things that that we're
- 7:19seeing now. Is the ability for peptides to
- 7:23also. Be a delivery system.
- 7:25So there's a broad application in.
- 7:28How you can use? Peptides too.
- 7:31OK. So that's interesting.
- 7:34And I feel all of these ingredients we're learning.
- 7:36Do we use them everyday? Do we rotate them with other
- 7:39ingredients? So how do you, I guess, deal
- 7:42with the pressure of researching new trendy ingredients?
- 7:46Or did you ever feel pressure to try new trendy ingredients?
- 7:50Or do you let the science dictate the product development
- 7:53at this point? We're primarily driven by
- 7:56science first and foremost. But we're.
- 7:58Looking for the science and where scientists are engaging in
- 8:04advancing and with a very. Forward.
- 8:07Looking lens on how to tap into the power of.
- 8:10Peptides. And so I guess.
- 8:13It's a little bit of both, but. First and foremost, we are
- 8:16always grounded and deeply rooted in science.
- 8:19And I'm sure it's difficult to decide and I'm sure you have
- 8:23come up with a process of how to decide which innovations are
- 8:27worth pursuing and which are just noise.
- 8:30Yeah, I do think there's some things that New Beauty is
- 8:32working on in Beauty Engine that's really compelling because
- 8:36science is so important to what? We do the way we deliver it to
- 8:40the. Professional and the.
- 8:41Patients they serve. In a way that's meaningful for
- 8:45them and what not only they need from that improvement and the
- 8:52skin health that they're looking for, but also in overall
- 8:55experience is really important one of the elements.
- 8:59That has always. Been important to me.
- 9:01Is you've. Got to be grounded in science,
- 9:04but we can't just. Wholly look at that.
- 9:07And not think about. A 360 experience that both the.
- 9:12Professional and the. Patient that they're serving.
- 9:14Has being that I've been on the premium beauty?
- 9:18Side for over a. Decade of my 30.
- 9:21Five year career. I have seen what super elegant
- 9:25formulations and the draw. That they have to the.
- 9:29Consumer and what an opportunity there was in professional skin.
- 9:34Care to have a? Science first approach to skin
- 9:38care, but combining it in very luxurious formulations.
- 9:44I have a point of view that if you really want to drive that
- 9:46outcome, you've. Got to create products that your
- 9:49patients are. Going to fall in love with and
- 9:51be deeply. Loyal.
- 9:53To because compliance is everything in getting the
- 9:57outcome that we want and so creating those experiences that
- 10:01people can't wait. To.
- 10:03Do their skin care routine in the morning or night, making
- 10:06that a. Beloved part of their day is.
- 10:08Another really important element that we're always mindful of.
- 10:12So Annette, one of the products I really want to focus on is
- 10:16your Eye Authority Eye Cream. Again.
- 10:18I've been hearing about it for years from friends, family.
- 10:22How long has the product been out on the market?
- 10:25Interestingly enough, that was one of the.
- 10:26First products ever developed by Hydropeptide, so it's got.
- 10:31A long and deeply. Loyal group of people.
- 10:34That cannot live without it. I just started my testing of it.
- 10:38I've been I'm very excited about it and that has been around for
- 10:42over a decade. How do you keep a legacy brand
- 10:47feeling fresh and modern? When doesn't it seem every day a
- 10:50new skin care brand comes out? It does.
- 10:53Hydropeptide's actually been. Around for over 20 years, we
- 10:57celebrated our 20th anniversary last year in June.
- 11:01And I think that it comes from two things.
- 11:04One, it's from being deeply committed to innovation, but it
- 11:08also comes from making. Sure that we are.
- 11:11Listening that we're listening to our providers and the
- 11:15patients that they serve. So it was really.
- 11:17Important to us, for example. To.
- 11:20Also understand our responsibility to the planet,
- 11:23for example, and develop skin care, packaging and components
- 11:29that. Were wholly recyclable or.
- 11:32Came from. Most recycled plastics.
- 11:35That's something you don't see in the professional skin care
- 11:38space. We also think about clean and
- 11:41really unique. Ways still.
- 11:43Grounded in science. But when we think about what
- 11:46clean beauty means to us, it means a few things.
- 11:50One that we run all of our ingredients through the
- 11:53toxicogenomic database to ensure that none of the ingredients
- 11:57have ever been linked to any. Adverse effects.
- 12:00To our DNA, it also means that we're following all of the
- 12:04global requirements. That are required to.
- 12:08Sell internationally. We are a global brand, so we.
- 12:11Follow all of. EU standards Japan, Canada help
- 12:15Canada and Australia, which are some of the strictest government
- 12:19bodies on banned ingredients. So we are globally.
- 12:22Compliant there too. So it we have quite a few hoops
- 12:26we have to jump. Through when formulating but.
- 12:29It's a concept. Commitment to innovating and
- 12:32then making sure that we're listening as well.
- 12:35And on that note, and it does sound like you really have
- 12:38elevated things from the scientific perspective.
- 12:41So what do you believe sets Hydropeptide apart from other
- 12:45science based skin care brands? I think that it is.
- 12:50A. Deep focus and understanding.
- 12:53Of. Regenerative therapeutics, how
- 12:56we lean into that, but it's combining.
- 12:59That with luxury experiences. From the way we think.
- 13:04About the facial treatments. That one can have in.
- 13:07Office to. Their home care regimen.
- 13:11It all needs. To be a very high touch high.
- 13:15Result experience. So how do you decide which skin
- 13:22care concerns to address next? Is it consumer demand, is a
- 13:26clinical research, or both? Combination.
- 13:32Of all of the above, we've got. This incredible new peel, for
- 13:36example, we've got this great new treatment that we've just
- 13:39launched. Called Hydroglass.
- 13:41And it has four different components in it.
- 13:45To really deliver. An absolutely incredible
- 13:49immediate result with long term benefits, but once somebody gets
- 13:53that treatment, they are rebooking that treatment every
- 13:57single month. The results are just.
- 14:00Outstanding. But it's.
- 14:01Delivered in a way that you want to come.
- 14:05Back. It felt great to get that.
- 14:08Shakimic peel in that hydroglass experience.
- 14:12So it's. A multi faceted process that we
- 14:15we look for. And deciding whether we're going
- 14:19to go to market with an individual.
- 14:21Product or the way? We think about developing.
- 14:24Our overall protocol treatments that we deliver to the offices.
- 14:30That's amazing. And I know I want to know more
- 14:32about the glass, of course. So that's an that's an in office
- 14:36treatment only. It's an in office only
- 14:39treatment, Yeah. It.
- 14:41Starts with this. Incredible.
- 14:42Physical. Exfoliation with this vitamin.
- 14:46C2 step peel. That we've got, that's a great
- 14:48experience. Then it's followed with the
- 14:50Shachemic. Acid.
- 14:52Peel and then we. Follow with.
- 14:54Our moisture infusion mask that's also complemented by LED
- 14:58if you want to put an LED on light on them as well.
- 15:02But it gives your. Skin this beautiful glass.
- 15:05Like. Appearance to it that is a long
- 15:07lasting. Yeah, it sounds heavenly.
- 15:10So I am going to need to sign up for.
- 15:12We will find you a provider. I would love for you to get that
- 15:16amazing. Thank you.
- 15:17Thank you. I'd love that.
- 15:19And that's an important piece of our conversation is that
- 15:23Hydropeptide is not just at the consumer level, it's at the
- 15:26clinic level. And I don't think that everyone
- 15:28knows that. For our listeners, for people
- 15:31that are watching, I think it's important to talk about how
- 15:34you're selling the brand into professionals as well as
- 15:37consumers and what would be the difference difference there.
- 15:41Yeah, we are wholly. Dedicated to the professional
- 15:44skin care channel. Like I shared earlier, our early
- 15:47adopters. 20 plus. Years ago were the.
- 15:50Estheticians who were so. Excited to have Peptide.
- 15:55Based formulations to introduce their client base too as we've
- 15:59grown as our access. To.
- 16:01Advanced technology has grown, we have expanded and are now.
- 16:06Widely distributed. Around the world in
- 16:10dermatologist, nurse injector offices and medical spas around
- 16:14the. World as well as five star
- 16:17resort spas, we also speak directly to the.
- 16:20Consumer as well as. Part of that outreach.
- 16:23If you were introduced. To hydro peptide.
- 16:25And you are out of the country. We want to help you find a
- 16:29provider. That's.
- 16:30Here near to home and so we like to engage that consumer to help
- 16:35enhance their education, but also.
- 16:38To facilitate. An introduction to a recommended
- 16:42professional near them. That's an amazing experience
- 16:46that you're taking care of. That's great.
- 16:48As I was going to ask you next is how do you handle the
- 16:52feedback from professionals versus direct consumers and what
- 16:56drives your next move at the company?
- 17:00We. Welcome all feedback from.
- 17:03Anybody who's used our products? And wants to give it.
- 17:07I take it as an honor. Regardless of what that.
- 17:09Feedback that somebody would take the time.
- 17:12To share their feedback to help. Make us a better company.
- 17:15So we openly welcome that. But.
- 17:17We also every. Other year conduct.
- 17:20Surveys directly to the. Professional and to the
- 17:23consumer. With.
- 17:25Questions really wanting to understand what their needs and
- 17:30wants. Are so that we.
- 17:32Can custom tailor our products and it's not.
- 17:35Just products, it's how can we be the best possible partner to
- 17:40the practices that we're support.
- 17:42We believe deeply that partnership is absolutely
- 17:46important. It's what the offices need.
- 17:48Most. Offices you're working with.
- 17:51Providers that are. Working directly with patient.
- 17:54Base we need to be the type of. Partner that can come in and
- 17:58really do. All of the heavy.
- 18:00Lifting for them as we train and.
- 18:02Educate their staff. From other practitioners in
- 18:05their office to the front desk to how we think about helping to
- 18:10also. Educate their patient base.
- 18:12From the way we merchandise and offer educational materials to
- 18:16their patient. And.
- 18:17Any of those other elements that they might need heavy lifting
- 18:20from a partner. We like to take.
- 18:22That upon ourselves to help them just.
- 18:26Thrive as a practice. Wow.
- 18:28So that's a lot of support that you're providing on the clinic
- 18:31side. That's phenomenal.
- 18:33And it's funny, we just recently did a survey about that with
- 18:37Beauty Engine and what clinics are looking for.
- 18:39And they're definitely looking for more support, more training,
- 18:42more of a connection with their skin care representative.
- 18:46So that's great. Now let's shift over to the
- 18:49consumer side for a minute though.
- 18:51Are you seeing a shift in what today's consumer is actually
- 18:56wanting from their skin care routine and is it difficult to
- 18:59keep? Up, there's really good.
- 19:02News for us. For all of.
- 19:03Us in the professional skin care industry is that the consumer
- 19:08wants scientifically grounded and validated skin care
- 19:13solutions they want. That so that's great.
- 19:17Those of us in this industry, we can check.
- 19:19That box they also. Want clean formulas And we know
- 19:23that takes on a lot of different definitions based on your
- 19:27individual point of view on what clean means for you.
- 19:31But I think it's important for everyone to have a point of view
- 19:34on it. So we know that consumers want
- 19:36that. We also know that consumers are
- 19:39leaning in to professional treatments.
- 19:43There is a curiosity about it. They are.
- 19:46Leaning in. And they're leaning in at
- 19:48younger ages than ever before. But we also know that they want.
- 19:52Those. Experiences to be fulsome they
- 19:57want. To feel heard.
- 19:59They want it to feel good and they want to walk away feeling
- 20:04like that was that investment. Was good for.
- 20:09All of. Them if that makes.
- 20:10Sense that that not only did it improve their skin health, but
- 20:14frankly that it. Improved.
- 20:16Even emotional health as well, and there's a lot that we can do
- 20:20as an industry to really make sure that the patients.
- 20:23Feel that type of support. When they're in, I think the
- 20:26other thing that we're seeing is this blurring of the lines
- 20:30between what is traditional spa, between what is traditional
- 20:35medical services and that's really driven by the consumer
- 20:39saying I want the medical. Type results, but I'd really
- 20:42prefer it to be wrapped. Up in a more of a spa like
- 20:45experience. Absolutely.
- 20:48And people want that experience like you're saying everybody
- 20:51wants to. I think since COVID days, people
- 20:54are taking better care of themselves and we all missed out
- 20:57on our treatments during those time when we weren't allowed to
- 20:59go. So I think we're appreciating
- 21:02those treatments more. So let's shift back a little
- 21:05more to your CEO role. And I have an important question
- 21:10to ask you. What has been one of the most
- 21:14pivotal strategic moves that you have made since becoming CEO of
- 21:19Hydropeptide? I think it's staying very firm
- 21:23and. Wholly dedicated to the.
- 21:24Professional, we feel like. There is a lot.
- 21:28Of room to grow in the space and there can be.
- 21:30Outside pressures that say. Hey, and invitations.
- 21:34To say, hey, what about this? We love what you're.
- 21:36Doing. But we really believe.
- 21:39In the power and the recommendation of the
- 21:43professional and hydro peptide. Is a.
- 21:46Professional skin care brand with the most incredible
- 21:49professional treatments that need to be in the hands of that
- 21:53professional and I would say staying firmly dedicated in
- 21:56that. Space is really.
- 21:58Important. It's where all of our
- 22:00investments are made and it's. Where we're here to stay.
- 22:05OK. That's a great answer.
- 22:06And I'm sure there's a lot of professionals listening in that
- 22:09will appreciate that. And on the flip side, you know
- 22:13that strategic moves, but what was something that maybe you
- 22:17thought was going to be a game changer and then didn't wind up
- 22:21being a game changer for you or for the company?
- 22:24Well, that's interesting. I think this is something
- 22:26interesting. As I process this, if you look
- 22:28at hydropeptide, we've got. Quite a few skews in order to.
- 22:31Create those experiences that. We want, we've got.
- 22:35A little over 60. Retail skews, for example, one
- 22:39of the things that's interesting when you.
- 22:40Look at Hydropeptide is. We don't have a.
- 22:42Hero skew our top. 20. Skews.
- 22:46Are making up less than 80% of our total, so it sounds great
- 22:50to. Say, oh, all of our SKUs are
- 22:53heroes SKUs. But I actually think that we
- 22:56need to challenge. Ourselves that there are these
- 22:59products that. We know.
- 23:02Through data create. Exceptional long term value and
- 23:07the LTV for example around those high tech patented technologies.
- 23:12That we have like. With Nimny technology, with our
- 23:16Cell Renew 16 technology that I'm challenging our.
- 23:20Team all of our practices that we really need to be.
