- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's Almost Famous podcast.
- 0:07Speaker 3: We are here today to speak to somebody who's been
- 0:10Speaker 3: in the headlines recently for something very unfortunate and something
- 0:16Speaker 3: we want to get some clarity on because I honestly
- 0:20Speaker 3: I'm reading through our rundown and there's just a lot
- 0:23Speaker 3: of intrigue that I have to speak to Kevin Mano.
- 0:29Speaker 3: That's how I said it, right Mano?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you got it, Hi, guys.
- 0:32Speaker 4: Kevin Mano is also known as Ali Photosyno's husband his
- 0:37Speaker 4: relationship to Bachelor Nation.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, that's how I've met you, guys. You've
- 0:42Speaker 1: both been very nice over the years, and your team
- 0:44Speaker 1: sent some nice stuff over here after my news came out,
- 0:47Speaker 1: So thank you, guys.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Yeah, you have a radio voice, and I know you
- 0:52Speaker 3: have a career in radio. As we kicked this thing off,
- 0:56Speaker 3: I want to keep it light at the beginning, if possible.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Are you still working in radio?
- 1:03Speaker 3: Kind of give everybody an idea of where they could
- 1:05Speaker 3: hear you or where they can catch up with you.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, that's thanks. We'll do the plug right off
- 1:10Speaker 1: the top.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I like it.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I do a morning show, a morning radio show.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I did it and I won in LA for like
- 1:15Speaker 1: ten years on now one oh four to three MYFM there,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and now I am on one oh seven five The
- 1:19Speaker 1: River in Nashville. We've lived in Nashville for four years
- 1:22Speaker 1: or so, and I do the morning show here on
- 1:24Speaker 1: a station called The River with my friends Ricky and
- 1:26Speaker 1: Zach and it's a ton of fun. And I've been
- 1:29Speaker 1: doing morning radio for you know, almost fifteen years now,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and I absolutely love it. I wake up at four o'clock,
- 1:35Speaker 1: even on the weekends, and so that that schedule suits me.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I like it.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I know that's a special person.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Something wrong with me. But then I also do a
- 1:45Speaker 1: daily podcast which is just my own solo thing called
- 1:48Speaker 1: First Thing with Kevin Mannon which is ten minutes every morning,
- 1:50Speaker 1: just a quick recap of all of the top headlines,
- 1:53Speaker 1: just a very easy, efficient way to get the news
- 1:55Speaker 1: in the morning. So doing all that, I've.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Listened to your podcast, I think it's great.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I love the concept of a quick hitter to get
- 2:04Speaker 3: me caught up and then any further details I need
- 2:06Speaker 3: I can go out and kind of research. I think
- 2:09Speaker 3: it's fantastic.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Totally, and I'm so I love listening to podcasts and music.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I always have my AirPods in so to be able
- 2:16Speaker 1: to get sort of the headlines without having to doom scroll,
- 2:18Speaker 1: just while you're doing other things, while you're getting yourself
- 2:20Speaker 1: ready in the morning. Like that, to me, that's how
- 2:23Speaker 1: I want to consume the news. So that's that's what
- 2:24Speaker 1: I'm doing.
- 2:25Speaker 4: You to You just said that you've been in Nashville
- 2:28Speaker 4: for about four years. I remember when I moved to
- 2:30Speaker 4: Rhode Island. Ali, I think she. I think she messaged
- 2:34Speaker 4: me being like, I'm also in the same boat right now.
- 2:38Speaker 4: We just moved to a new place, like I'm kind
- 2:40Speaker 4: of regretting it, we both having moved from LA at
- 2:43Speaker 4: the same time. And she was like, I hear it's
- 2:45Speaker 4: supposed to take two years to get adjusted to a
- 2:47Speaker 4: new place. How have you guys adjusted now four years then.
- 2:50Speaker 1: We've definitely adjusted. I mean, there are still things that
- 2:53Speaker 1: we miss. Honestly, we missed about California. We will always
- 2:55Speaker 1: love California. We go back and visit. We have a
- 2:57Speaker 1: bunch of friends there, but no, Nashville is home now
- 3:01Speaker 1: and we love it here. We have a ton of friends,
- 3:03Speaker 1: the kids have tons of friends, so I love my job.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Like it didn't take about two years, was right? I
- 3:09Speaker 1: would say two years in a new place is probably
- 3:11Speaker 1: a good a pretty good uh you know barometer. But yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 1: we're we're good now we're settled here.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Well, you might have a new neighbor in Ben in
- 3:18Speaker 4: a few years.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 3: My my wife's family's off from Nashville, so everybody keeps
- 3:25Speaker 3: pushing us.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Yeah, Ben, I'm sure you and I talked about this
- 3:28Speaker 1: a lot a long time ago when we first met.
- 3:30Speaker 1: But I grew up, I spent so much time in Warsaw, Indiana.
- 3:33Speaker 1: That's where all of my mom's sisters and my grandma.
- 3:37Speaker 1: That's where everybody lived when I was growing up, so
- 3:39Speaker 1: we were always there.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I remember this. Not a lot of people have been there,
- 3:42Speaker 2: but the good ones have.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Kevin, Yes, Why it feels like you're always meeting somebody
- 3:46Speaker 4: who has memories from Warsaw.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Bet And it's apart a small town?
- 3:50Speaker 4: Is it a little the lake?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just like it's it's kind of like a hub.
- 3:54Speaker 2: People gravitate towards it.
- 3:55Speaker 3: When they want to better themselves.
- 4:00Speaker 1: How are you? How are you? Do you say? Rhode Island?
- 4:02Speaker 1: How are you there?
- 4:02Speaker 4: Yeah? It's I've definitely adjusted. I would still rather view
- 4:08Speaker 4: by my family in Virginia, but we'll see that might
- 4:11Speaker 4: happen at some point.
- 4:13Speaker 2: She makes no secrets, Kevin. Speaking of.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Kevin, before we dive into kind of why we're here today,
- 4:22Speaker 3: Ali did leave four Special Forces, and that is a
- 4:27Speaker 3: topic that I am curious about now. I'm a little confused, Kevin,
- 4:33Speaker 3: and maybe you can bring some clarity to this. Trista
- 4:36Speaker 3: and Ryan obviously are married. Trista was on the show
- 4:40Speaker 3: as well. Ryan was posting, we're not gonna go into
- 4:43Speaker 3: you know how we feel about the post. We've already
- 4:45Speaker 3: done that in a very past episode. But he was
- 4:47Speaker 3: posting like she was gone for a long time, even
- 4:49Speaker 3: though we only saw her on two episodes, right, Yes, Allie,
- 4:54Speaker 3: similar situation when she left the show? Are they gone
- 4:59Speaker 3: a lot long? And then my fallow up to that is,
- 5:01Speaker 3: how was that on you? Being kind of a solo parent?
- 5:06Speaker 1: My mom came and helped out when she was gone,
- 5:08Speaker 1: which was very nice that, you know, I needed the
- 5:10Speaker 1: help because of my job and having to get the
- 5:11Speaker 1: kids to school and all that stuff. And honestly, Ali
- 5:16Speaker 1: had trained so hard for Special Forces, like truly she
- 5:19Speaker 1: was fully committed to this. We got a cold plunge
- 5:21Speaker 1: because of it. She was working out three times a day,
- 5:24Speaker 1: like it was crazy. She was ready. So we were
- 5:28Speaker 1: hoping she would be gone the whole time, like best
- 5:31Speaker 1: case scenario when she said goodbye to me that morning
- 5:34Speaker 1: when she was leaving the hotel, like I wouldn't hear
- 5:35Speaker 1: from her for ten days. Sadly, that did not happen.
- 5:38Speaker 1: They made her leave the show because her finger. She
- 5:40Speaker 1: hurt her finger and so they medically withdrew her. But yeah,
- 5:44Speaker 1: she was there. There were like two or three days
- 5:46Speaker 1: of like you know, doing interviews and like stuff, just
- 5:50Speaker 1: random stuff that happens with the TV show before they
- 5:53Speaker 1: even left to go start filming the show. So I
- 5:55Speaker 1: would say all total, she was She was only on
- 5:58Speaker 1: two episodes of the show, but she was probably gone
- 6:00Speaker 1: for seven or eight days.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And those seven or eight days you had support.
- 6:04Speaker 3: And so, I mean, as sad as it is to
- 6:07Speaker 3: not have your spouse around, you were doing okay.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I was doing okay. And you know, I mean distance
- 6:13Speaker 1: makes the heart grow fonder whenever, you know, if she's
- 6:16Speaker 1: out of time for a couple of days, it's nice
- 6:17Speaker 1: to have a big bed to myself.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Stretch out, I got it.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Yeah, full starfish.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Didn't she like train for six weeks?
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the minute she did.
- 6:28Speaker 4: She know that I have that much notice. I feel
- 6:30Speaker 4: like oftentimes you don't get that.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I'm not sure why. Honestly, she as far as we know,
- 6:34Speaker 1: she was one of the first people to be approached
- 6:36Speaker 1: about the show, and she said yes, and she started
- 6:39Speaker 1: training immediately. We started watching the previous episodes of the show,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and she just hit the ground run in like that day.
- 6:46Speaker 1: And I was I mean, I like, I like to
- 6:48Speaker 1: work out and stay active and fit, but I was
- 6:51Speaker 1: blown away by the things she was doing and how
- 6:53Speaker 1: strong she got before the show, and it was man like.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I was sleeping one night, it was, you know, two
- 6:58Speaker 1: nights into her filming the show, my phone rang and
- 7:00Speaker 1: she has like a special ring on my phone and
- 7:02Speaker 1: it woke me up, and my heart just sank because
- 7:05Speaker 1: I knew that meant she was back with her phone
- 7:07Speaker 1: in a hotel room somewhere and she was no longer
- 7:09Speaker 1: on the show. So that was rough, But I'm still
- 7:11Speaker 1: proud of her.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a big deal just to say yes.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Yeah, Kevin, we're talking about family and we're talking about
- 7:18Speaker 3: physical fitness, and the reason we're here today is because
- 7:21Speaker 3: recently you've came out publicly about your diagnosis with thyroid cancer.
- 7:27Speaker 3: The first question I have for you is, how are
- 7:30Speaker 3: you doing right now? Do we have an update since
- 7:34Speaker 3: the announcement.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, honestly, I'm a little anxious because I
- 7:38Speaker 1: have surgery coming up in a few days here, and
- 7:40Speaker 1: I haven't really had too many surgeries in my life,
- 7:42Speaker 1: so the whole thing is just sort of, you know,
- 7:44Speaker 1: freaking me out a tiny bit. But I know I'm
- 7:46Speaker 1: in good hands with my surgeon and everybody at Vanderbilt
- 7:48Speaker 1: here in Nashville. But really, I'm not just saying this.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I'm so good. I feel like the overwhelming feeling is
- 7:56Speaker 1: just like gratitude that we caught it and that I
- 7:59Speaker 1: know about this and we have a plan, and that
- 8:01Speaker 1: everybody has been so supportive, and again my Mom's coming
- 8:05Speaker 1: back to help us out when I'm recovering from the surgery.
- 8:08Speaker 1: But I just I feel good. I'm not stressed, I'm
- 8:12Speaker 1: not freaked out. I'm like, I know that this is
- 8:15Speaker 1: an easy one to just go in there and get
- 8:17Speaker 1: and then you know, I have to be in bed
- 8:19Speaker 1: for a bit to recover, but I'll be back back
- 8:22Speaker 1: in action before before you know. It's so I feel good,
- 8:24Speaker 1: I really do.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Your Instagram noticed to all the followers about it was
- 8:29Speaker 4: also very positive. What were your symptoms going into it
- 8:33Speaker 4: that made you even get checked out in the first place?
- 8:35Speaker 1: None, I had no symptoms. Ali and I. Yeah, a
- 8:38Speaker 1: little over a year ago, we went to Chicago and
- 8:40Speaker 1: we did those Perneuvo full body scans.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Okay, I just reached out to them because Trista also
- 8:46Speaker 4: just got one it. Actually I'm interested.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, that's the only reason I know about this, honestly.
- 8:51Speaker 4: No.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Yes, When we did it, you know, we got our
- 8:53Speaker 1: results from the scans, and for the most part, Ali
- 8:56Speaker 1: and I both had you know, clean bill of health,
- 8:59Speaker 1: which was great. But we obviously shared the results of
- 9:01Speaker 1: the scans with our doctor and there were like two
- 9:05Speaker 1: tiny dots on my thyroid that she was like, let's
- 9:09Speaker 1: keep an eye on that. You know, we'll check back
- 9:10Speaker 1: in in a year and see if it's grown or
- 9:12Speaker 1: if it's nothing whatever. And so a year after we
- 9:15Speaker 1: did those scans, she wanted me to get an ultrasound
- 9:17Speaker 1: on it. I did, and yeah, then it we found
- 9:20Speaker 1: out that those little spots had doubled in size over
- 9:23Speaker 1: the past years. So then we did a biopsy and
- 9:25Speaker 1: then a cat scan, so we did all the stuff
- 9:27Speaker 1: and here we are. I would not have known had
- 9:29Speaker 1: it not been for that full body scan.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Pre Novo is like the next step in our health.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I really feel like, be totally magical if we could
- 9:39Speaker 4: just make getting one of those scans every few years
- 9:42Speaker 4: to be like our annual checkup.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Yes, and that's so that's kind of my I mean,
- 9:46Speaker 1: if anybody is, you know, paying a little more attention
- 9:49Speaker 1: to us in our life at the moment, that would
- 9:51Speaker 1: be the message I want to get out there is
- 9:52Speaker 1: just preventive care. Whatever you can do to you know,
- 9:57Speaker 1: be aggressive when it comes to your health and get
- 9:59Speaker 1: checked whatever that looks like for you. Everybody should be
- 10:02Speaker 1: doing whatever they can to just stay on top of
- 10:04Speaker 1: these issues.
- 10:06Speaker 4: That's like Maria Minuno's she had pancreatic cancer and they
- 10:11Speaker 4: found it so early, which pangaratic cancers never found early,
- 10:15Speaker 4: and she had a baby on the way and everything,
- 10:17Speaker 4: and she's fine because they caught it that early. With
- 10:20Speaker 4: pre Novo.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Yeah, there's not enough emphasis in our healthcare system or
- 10:25Speaker 1: not here to go on a rant about the healthcare system,
- 10:27Speaker 1: but about preventative stuff, you know what I mean. A
- 10:29Speaker 1: lot of it is like treatment based, but any sort
- 10:32Speaker 1: of preventative care you can do, I think is a
- 10:34Speaker 1: great idea.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Now for the listeners, I think a first big takeaway
- 10:50Speaker 3: you obviously went to Chicago for this, and you live
- 10:53Speaker 3: in a metropolitan area that has a lot of access
- 10:57Speaker 3: to incredible health and services. If somebody's listening, no matter
- 11:03Speaker 3: what kind of financial place are in in life, where
- 11:06Speaker 3: can they find one of these facilities? Where do you
- 11:08Speaker 3: recommend them reaching out to?
- 11:10Speaker 1: I mean, Pernuvo has you know, offices around the country.
- 11:15Speaker 1: There are none in Nashville. I think the closest one
- 11:17Speaker 1: actually to Nashville would be Atlanta. Chicago would probably be second,
- 11:20Speaker 1: but I know there's a bunch in California.
- 11:22Speaker 2: They are all.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Over the place. So their website has a full, you
- 11:25Speaker 1: know list of where you could go do it if
- 11:28Speaker 1: that's something you are able to do. I know there
- 11:29Speaker 1: are other places where you can do like a you know,
- 11:32Speaker 1: a pretty comprehensive blood draw and they'll do a ton
- 11:34Speaker 1: of tests on you, so you know, whatever's in your
- 11:37Speaker 1: price range. If any of this stuff is I would
- 11:40Speaker 1: just say, look into whatever works.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Yeah, why did you decide to get it in the
- 11:44Speaker 3: first place? That's all Alie.
- 11:46Speaker 1: She's very She's so much more on top of this
- 11:50Speaker 1: stuff than I am. So if it wasn't for her,
- 11:52Speaker 1: I wouldn't even know about it. But she she knows
- 11:55Speaker 1: all these things, and we're always doing all this stuff,
- 11:57Speaker 1: and I'm so thankful for that, or e'lse, I would
- 11:58Speaker 1: just be walking around on with thyroid cancer and have
- 12:01Speaker 1: no idea.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I haven't got a physical in years, which brings
- 12:04Speaker 3: me to the next question.
- 12:05Speaker 1: That that'd be me, Bene if it was Alli wasn't
- 12:07Speaker 1: in my life.
- 12:08Speaker 3: You're making me feel all convicted here. You know, when
- 12:13Speaker 3: you get this kind of news, it's it's something you
- 12:16Speaker 3: don't really prepare for. And I know that you're positive,
- 12:19Speaker 3: and I know your doctor even initially called it like
- 12:22Speaker 3: the boring cancer, which I think would feel good. But
- 12:26Speaker 3: how did Ali respond and how have the two of
- 12:29Speaker 3: you supported each other in the midst of still getting
- 12:33Speaker 3: news that you have cancer?
- 12:35Speaker 1: I mean, it feels weird to say that it's brought
- 12:38Speaker 1: us closer, but and it's not like we had any
- 12:41Speaker 1: issues prior to this, but it has it's been a
- 12:43Speaker 1: nice like bonding experience because she is she has really
- 12:46Speaker 1: taken the reins on, just like reading all the stuff
- 12:49Speaker 1: and reaching out to all the people and making all
- 12:51Speaker 1: the appointments for me, and like I'm my doctor told
- 12:54Speaker 1: me to, you know, alleviate stress for my life. So
- 12:56Speaker 1: I'm trying not to do any of that stuff and
- 12:57Speaker 1: she is taking it all on, and I could not
- 13:00Speaker 1: be more appreciative. She's really I mean, I wouldn't be
- 13:04Speaker 1: in the situation without her, and I wouldn't be able
- 13:06Speaker 1: to do it like I am without her either, because yeah,
- 13:09Speaker 1: it's just it's been great and I'm very thankful for
- 13:12Speaker 1: for everything she's done.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Now, if you had symptoms, what would they be? What
- 13:16Speaker 4: should people look out for?
- 13:18Speaker 1: That's a good question. We should get Ali in here
- 13:20Speaker 1: to talk because she's the one doing all the reading.
- 13:22Speaker 1: I know most of the time, people will like develop
- 13:25Speaker 1: like a lump that they can feel and touch in
- 13:27Speaker 1: their throat because the thyroid's like right below your Adam's
- 13:30Speaker 1: apple area. So that's how most people realize that they've
- 13:33Speaker 1: got something going on, is they'll you know, they'll feel
- 13:36Speaker 1: this giant thing growing inside of them.
- 13:38Speaker 4: And you're deciding whether or not, or at least the
- 13:41Speaker 4: last time I heard we heard from you publicly, you
- 13:43Speaker 4: were deciding whether to get half of it out or
- 13:46Speaker 4: the full thy word out. You decided, And what does
- 13:49Speaker 4: that even mean for your life going forward?
- 13:53Speaker 1: I think I was so freaked out at first about
- 13:57Speaker 1: having cancer that I was like, go just take the
- 13:59Speaker 1: whole thing out, Like I don't want to have to
- 14:00Speaker 1: deal with this again in two years. I don't want
- 14:02Speaker 1: to keep an eye on the other half to see
- 14:03Speaker 1: if that now has cancer, and like always, I just
- 14:06Speaker 1: get rid of it and I don't want to think
- 14:07Speaker 1: about it anymore. That's kind of where I was at first.
- 14:09Speaker 1: But the more we looked into it, everybody, all the
- 14:12Speaker 1: experts were saying, like, if you can save half, you
- 14:15Speaker 1: should always save half, whatever body part that might be,
- 14:19Speaker 1: you know, try to save what you can. So yeah,
- 14:22Speaker 1: I think that's where we are now. And my surgeon
- 14:25Speaker 1: is not gonna know until she gets in there to see,
- 14:28Speaker 1: like there are some little like lymph nodes or something
- 14:30Speaker 1: that might the cancer might have spread to those, and
- 14:33Speaker 1: she's gonna they're gonna like, while I'm under on the table,
- 14:36Speaker 1: they're gonna like send those to the lab to see
- 14:38Speaker 1: if they're cancers whatever. They might have to take the
- 14:41Speaker 1: whole thing. And if that's the case, that you know,
- 14:43Speaker 1: that's that's what they're gonna have to do. But I
- 14:47Speaker 1: really hope, I mean, this is it's you know, we
- 14:49Speaker 1: all think about like these cosmetic things and stuff, and
- 14:51Speaker 1: I don't care about a scar or anything, but I
- 14:53Speaker 1: do work with my voice doing radio and so whatever.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I've heard some stories from people that are like, oh,
- 14:59Speaker 1: my voice really heal for eight months, and that's not
- 15:02Speaker 1: gonna work for me, really, So I just I hope
- 15:05Speaker 1: that they can, you know, avoid any damage to my
- 15:09Speaker 1: vocal cards. But I'm again, I know I'm in the
- 15:11Speaker 1: best hand, so I'm not too worried about it.
- 15:13Speaker 3: I feel like a doctor in Nashville probably has worked
- 15:16Speaker 3: with a lot of people that rely on their voices totally,
- 15:21Speaker 3: and so I'm guessing that isn't like a new shocking thing.
- 15:24Speaker 3: You have surgery and warsaw Indiana. They might be like,
- 15:26Speaker 3: I don't know what's gonna happen. I think they know
- 15:28Speaker 3: what's gonna happen in Nashville. Kevin, we did mention that
- 15:33Speaker 3: you two have some some smaller children. I'm curious about
- 15:39Speaker 3: if they know of the situation maybe, or how you
- 15:44Speaker 3: told them or why you decided not to.
- 15:46Speaker 1: No, we did. I was so I was so nervous
- 15:49Speaker 1: about telling our kids. And our daughter is so sensitive
- 15:52Speaker 1: and she's eight and she knows what cancer is. We
- 15:54Speaker 1: have friends that have, you know, battled cancer, and she's
- 15:57Speaker 1: seen them lose their hair and everything. So I was
- 15:59Speaker 1: I was worried that she would freak out when she
- 16:01Speaker 1: heard that word. But we told him as softly as
- 16:05Speaker 1: we could, like the doctors found the smallest amount of cancer.
- 16:07Speaker 1: They're just going to go in remove it. It's not
- 16:09Speaker 1: gonna be a big deal. And then I said, and
- 16:11Speaker 1: Mimi's coming when I'm after the surgery. When I'm in Ben,
- 16:13Speaker 1: she goes me, this is the best surgery ever. That
- 16:17Speaker 1: was her response. So she was fine. They're okay with it.
- 16:20Speaker 1: They're excited that I'm gonna be home from work for
- 16:21Speaker 1: a week.
- 16:23Speaker 4: So how do you regulate hormones and such? How does
- 16:27Speaker 4: the thyroid, like you know, that's what it does. How
- 16:30Speaker 4: does your body continue to do that once it's out.
- 16:33Speaker 1: That's a great question, Ashley. I don't know if you
- 16:34Speaker 1: looked it up or knew that.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Because I didn't know, I like to pretend that I'm
- 16:37Speaker 4: a doctor on TV.
- 16:38Speaker 1: That was good. I didn't know anything about the thyroid
- 16:41Speaker 1: before any of this happened. But there's like a very
- 16:43Speaker 1: standard medication. I would say the name of it, but
- 16:46Speaker 1: I know I'd get it wrong. But like, my mom
- 16:48Speaker 1: had her thyroid removed a long time ago. They found
- 16:51Speaker 1: pre cancer cells on hers. So she's been taking this
- 16:53Speaker 1: medicine every day for I mean, over twenty years. And
- 16:57Speaker 1: it's just a pill you take every day, and it just,
- 16:59Speaker 1: like you know, does what the thyroid would do.
- 17:02Speaker 3: One of my best friends had his thyroid removed when
- 17:04Speaker 3: he was a teenager and he's doing just fine. But yes,
- 17:08Speaker 3: he takes a pill every day and it helps regulate everything. Kevin,
- 17:13Speaker 3: as we close up here with you, you mentioned at
- 17:16Speaker 3: the beginning there's a little anxiety right now about the
- 17:20Speaker 3: surgery itself. Maybe not as much even why the surgery
- 17:24Speaker 3: is happening, but the surgery itself. And I wanted to
- 17:26Speaker 3: hear if you could dig into that anxiety a little bit.
- 17:28Speaker 3: How are you feeling and what is exactly making you
- 17:31Speaker 3: nervous about you know, next week?
- 17:34Speaker 1: Yeah, the only other surgery I've ever had was I
- 17:37Speaker 1: had one single wisdom tooth removed, and that was the
- 17:40Speaker 1: only time I've ever been put under and that was,
- 17:42Speaker 1: I mean fifteen years ago, so before I had kids
- 17:44Speaker 1: or anything. And sorry to get heavy on you here,
- 17:47Speaker 1: but like I keep just like my mind wanders to,
- 17:50Speaker 1: like what if I don't wake up? And I know
- 17:52Speaker 1: that's you know, a one in a millionth chance of happening.
- 17:55Speaker 1: But those are probably natural thoughts for people to have
- 17:58Speaker 1: if they're experiences for the first time really in their life.
- 18:03Speaker 1: So that's kind of where my mind goes.
- 18:05Speaker 2: But I very.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Quickly know that's not going to happen. It's all gonna
- 18:09Speaker 1: be great again. I'm in great hands. But you know,
- 18:11Speaker 1: I mean just spinning the wheels and stuff like that
- 18:14Speaker 1: for no real reason.
- 18:16Speaker 4: My dad's an antithesiologist, and yet if I ever have surgery,
- 18:20Speaker 4: it's the waking up from the sleep that is the
- 18:22Speaker 4: scariest thing to me as well.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, but he's I mean, is it an inappropriate
- 18:28Speaker 1: question to ask, you know, since you have somebody in
- 18:31Speaker 1: the field, like, does it people usually wake up? Right?
- 18:35Speaker 4: I'm very I don't think that that happens, so so
- 18:38Speaker 4: rarely like good, You're great, Kevin Ashley.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I appreciate that. Yeah, I just text Ali and said,
- 18:47Speaker 1: if you're here, pop up and.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Here's she is.
- 18:48Speaker 1: I just wanted to say, yeah, Ali, we only have one.
- 18:51Speaker 3: I mean, we have so many questions for you, but
- 18:52Speaker 3: we'll only ask you one based on respect for you.
- 18:55Speaker 3: We were wondering these symptoms of thyroid cancer if Kevin
- 18:59Speaker 3: was them for people to look out for, and he
- 19:03Speaker 3: thought you would know.
- 19:06Speaker 1: You've been doing all the reading.
- 19:07Speaker 2: The research.
- 19:08Speaker 5: I've been doing all the reading.
- 19:09Speaker 6: I feel like that's what I haven't been reading up
- 19:10Speaker 6: about as much, just because that's he.
- 19:13Speaker 5: Didn't have any We already knew he had it.
- 19:15Speaker 6: But from what I understand, the symptoms are feeling like
- 19:19Speaker 6: a lump in your neck. So we're just sort of
- 19:21Speaker 6: feeling your neck and feeling your thyroid and seeing if
- 19:23Speaker 6: you feel like a little bulge or you know.
- 19:26Speaker 4: But it's not necessarily sore.
- 19:28Speaker 5: It can be sore. Hoarseness like a hoarse voice all
- 19:32Speaker 5: of a sudden could be an early sign.
- 19:35Speaker 6: But from what I understand, like the most most people
- 19:39Speaker 6: find out from like an accidental scan, like going in
- 19:42Speaker 6: and getting scanned for something else. And then they see
- 19:44Speaker 6: it if the people who don't have symptoms. But yeah,
- 19:48Speaker 6: I mean, gosh, we're just so lucky that we found it,
- 19:53Speaker 6: and yeah, we're just I think count he's he's more
- 19:57Speaker 6: anxious than he's letting on.
- 19:58Speaker 5: Also, let me just.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Say a lot of anxiety in general. I'm just like.
- 20:02Speaker 6: Yeah, like he's like playing it cool and everything, and
- 20:04Speaker 6: he's being very positive, which is also important. But you know,
- 20:07Speaker 6: it's still cancer and it's still surgery, and I.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Think Ali's getting annoyed with me, like, you know, her
- 20:13Speaker 1: and the kids are trying to relax at the end
- 20:15Speaker 1: of the night, I'm just pacing around the house, just
- 20:17Speaker 1: looking for things to stay busy. Yeah, so yeah, she
- 20:20Speaker 1: definitely witnesses my anxiety, but it's not too bad.
- 20:23Speaker 6: But we're like making plans like tonight we're going out
- 20:25Speaker 6: with friends to play trivia, and I'm just we're trying
- 20:27Speaker 6: to do things to like just keep his mind busy
- 20:30Speaker 6: because I'm also what we've heard from other people who
- 20:33Speaker 6: have had cancer, stress is like the absolute worst thing
- 20:37Speaker 6: for cancer. You want to minimize that as much as possible,
- 20:41Speaker 6: So we're trying.
- 20:53Speaker 3: You know, Kevin, we were just talking to Ali as
- 20:55Speaker 3: we closed up here on why he was anxious, and I,
- 20:59Speaker 3: you know, take it for me. I've had ten surgeries,
- 21:01Speaker 3: none of them cancer related, so I'm not there's no quantifying,
- 21:06Speaker 3: you know, better or worse here. I always no matter what,
- 21:10Speaker 3: and I don't think I'm.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Scared of surgery.
- 21:12Speaker 3: I always have these thoughts for like three days leading
- 21:15Speaker 3: up to the big event, of like worst case scenario thinking.
- 21:19Speaker 2: And you know it is for me. It comes from
- 21:21Speaker 2: most of my life.
- 21:22Speaker 3: I try to have control, and I know that for
- 21:25Speaker 3: this period of time in my life, I'm gonna have
- 21:27Speaker 3: zero control. But here's the cool part. Here's the thing
- 21:30Speaker 3: to find comfort in. The people that will have control
- 21:34Speaker 3: are literally the experts at keeping you alive. Like that's
- 21:37Speaker 3: what they get paid for, and like, I don't get
- 21:39Speaker 3: I don't even know how to keep myself alive, but
- 21:41Speaker 3: they do.
- 21:42Speaker 1: And Ben's that jogging when he says he doesn't know
- 21:43Speaker 1: how to keep himself alive. When was your last physical?
- 21:45Speaker 6: Ben?
- 21:46Speaker 2: This five years ago.
- 21:48Speaker 3: I'm going to get in so much trouble. My mom's
- 21:50Speaker 3: gonna listen to it, my wife's gonna listen to this.
- 21:52Speaker 3: They're gonna ride away be so.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Mad at me.
- 21:55Speaker 5: You have to like get your blood work done into that's.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Just like a wifely duty, right, Yeah, Allie, I feel
- 22:01Speaker 4: like I'm always the one that's like, I'm making you
- 22:02Speaker 4: a doctor's appointment because I know that you never ever will.
- 22:06Speaker 5: Yeah, that's exactly us too.
- 22:07Speaker 6: I'm I'm sure Kevin might have already said this, but
- 22:10Speaker 6: since this happened, I've like ordered everything under the sun,
- 22:13Speaker 6: whether it did you like brazil nuts or blueberry powder
- 22:16Speaker 6: or roughly sprat.
- 22:18Speaker 1: We have changed so we have a new gray toilet
- 22:20Speaker 1: paper in the house. So there's so many little changes
- 22:23Speaker 1: that she's implemented.
- 22:24Speaker 5: Oh, it's not bleached, because regular toilet papers bleached, so
- 22:27Speaker 5: we're just.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Like ring away.
- 22:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:30Speaker 6: Down there especially you know for girls, Like there's a
- 22:32Speaker 6: lot of very sensitive absorbent parts of your body down there.
- 22:36Speaker 5: So it's anyway, that's a whole other time.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Ali, come on and do another health podcast with us.
- 22:42Speaker 2: I love it.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Kevin, you're never gonna have a cheeseberger again.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Well, I don't want that to happen.
- 22:48Speaker 5: We've gone down the health rabbit for sure.
- 22:50Speaker 6: But you know what, that's good to me, Like, it's
- 22:53Speaker 6: it's only.
- 22:54Speaker 5: Positive to make positive changes in your life.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Yeah, uh, well, we'll be thinking about you, guys.
- 23:00Speaker 3: We have been obviously, this is a this is a
- 23:03Speaker 3: big deal, not to be go understated, but your positivity,
- 23:08Speaker 3: your outlook and also here's the cool part. What everybody
- 23:14Speaker 3: that knows is saying is this is gonna be great.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Like you're gonna be just fine, and that is an
- 23:19Speaker 3: awesome thing to celebrate. We're glad you caught it early
- 23:23Speaker 3: and thankful for those scans. Everybody listening, if you have
- 23:26Speaker 3: the opportunity of the chance, go do it. It's save
- 23:29Speaker 3: some lives. It's also saved some really difficult situations. So
- 23:34Speaker 3: but yes, we'll be thinking about you. When is the
- 23:36Speaker 3: date of the surgery again, so anybody listening can check in.
- 23:38Speaker 1: I'm not sure when this will be posted, but it's
- 23:40Speaker 1: a few days away and it's the tenth. It's Monday,
- 23:42Speaker 1: so the day of Super Bowl.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Okay, we'll have it up, uh and I will be
- 23:46Speaker 3: checking in to the hospital that night to have our
- 23:49Speaker 3: very first baby.
- 23:50Speaker 4: So this is this is the craziest thing ever. You're
- 23:57Speaker 4: both gonna do this on Super Bowl Sunday. You're not
- 23:59Speaker 4: gonna be to enjoy that moment at all.
- 24:02Speaker 2: More important things in life right, Well.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Ben, that's awesome.
- 24:05Speaker 6: Congratulations Manas, that's so exciting.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 24:08Speaker 3: That's why I was asking the parenting questions. I'm trying
- 24:11Speaker 3: to get any wisdom and advice that I can. And
- 24:13Speaker 3: so how do you tell your kids really difficult news?
- 24:16Speaker 3: And it sounds like you just sandwich it with and
- 24:19Speaker 3: by the way, our Grandpa's coming.
- 24:21Speaker 2: They go, oh, exactly, Yeah.
- 24:25Speaker 4: That really works. I want to end with a fun
- 24:27Speaker 4: question for both of you guys, because you're both going
- 24:31Speaker 4: into something life changing, possibly in all good ways, on Monday.
- 24:38Speaker 4: What is your guilty pleasure comfort thing? Is there a
- 24:41Speaker 4: food that you're going to celebrate with? Is there a
- 24:43Speaker 4: song that's keeping you giving your spirits up?
- 24:47Speaker 1: It's a good question.
- 24:48Speaker 5: Kevin will be eating broccoli spouts and blueberries.
- 24:52Speaker 1: No, I'm looking forward to Ali and my mom bringing
- 24:54Speaker 1: me a bunch of smoothies because the doctor said I
- 24:56Speaker 1: just have to drink food for a while. So I
- 24:58Speaker 1: like a good peanut butter smooth But I also, I mean,
- 25:02Speaker 1: it's not a song, but I'm looking I don't lay
- 25:05Speaker 1: in bed and watch movies ever, but I'm gonna watch
- 25:07Speaker 1: all of the Best Picture nominees while I'm laying in bed, recovering.
- 25:10Speaker 1: So I'm gonna watch all those Oscar nominated.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Movies, all those very indie movies these days.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, done, That's what are my comforts? Yeah goodness.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Right now it's vodka soda at the end of the
- 25:25Speaker 3: day or or Honestly, my wife and I have spent
- 25:32Speaker 3: the last week like going to bed early, laying in
- 25:34Speaker 3: bed and just appreciating like this time before chaos, of
- 25:39Speaker 3: just the dog, two of us snuggling watching TV without
- 25:45Speaker 3: any other thoughts in the world.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I mean, man, it's your final few days of just
- 25:49Speaker 1: the two of you.
- 25:50Speaker 2: That's wild.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Really try to save it as much as you can.
- 25:53Speaker 2: It's awesome and wild.
- 25:54Speaker 5: Can I give my last minute unsolicited yea acting advice? Okay.
- 26:00Speaker 6: One thing, especially now that our kids are older, that
- 26:02Speaker 6: I have been reflecting on every day, and I think
- 26:03Speaker 6: this has been like even multiplied one hundredfold since we've
- 26:07Speaker 6: got Kevin's diagnosis, is just how quickly time is going by, right,
- 26:12Speaker 6: And once you have kids, time is going to start
- 26:16Speaker 6: going by so much faster than it used to, right, Like,
- 26:19Speaker 6: I feel like the last nine years of my life
- 26:22Speaker 6: our daughter's eight. But you know, I was pregnant for
- 26:24Speaker 6: that first time has gone by faster than like the
- 26:26Speaker 6: previous twenty five years, and so I guess my advice
- 26:31Speaker 6: would be like to slow down as much as you can,
- 26:35Speaker 6: like because it truly does.
- 26:37Speaker 5: They say it goes.
- 26:38Speaker 6: By so fast, and I know that's such a clised,
- 26:40Speaker 6: shaye thing to say, but I think when you think
- 26:41Speaker 6: of it in terms of like I don't know, hearing
- 26:45Speaker 6: from parents that truly the time, like it's just it's
- 26:47Speaker 6: like fast forward. And then now with what's going on
- 26:50Speaker 6: with Kevin in health, and we realize that we're at
- 26:52Speaker 6: that stage in life where people start getting cancer and
- 26:54Speaker 6: people start getting sick and old, it just makes you
- 26:56Speaker 6: like really appreciate every moment.
- 26:58Speaker 4: So it would be And then Kevin Alli, I wonder
- 27:02Speaker 4: if you're with me on this, you're going into your
- 27:05Speaker 4: first child like it's gonna be fine. It's the second
- 27:08Speaker 4: one that just turns your world upside down. Yeah. I
- 27:12Speaker 4: think the same here.
- 27:15Speaker 1: And I missed those days when our daughter Molly was
- 27:18Speaker 1: just a tiny little baby. Just taking care of a
- 27:19Speaker 1: tiny little baby was like that was your only care
- 27:22Speaker 1: in the world. It was so great, So you're gonna
- 27:24Speaker 1: love it.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, Jared and I were thinking about that's a
- 27:27Speaker 4: lot this week. I don't know why this week of
- 27:29Speaker 4: all weeks, but like, do you remember what it was
- 27:31Speaker 4: just Dawson? How easy was that? How did we think
- 27:34Speaker 4: that was ever?
- 27:35Speaker 5: Hard?
- 27:35Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 27:36Speaker 5: But it is gonna be hard, Ben, don't.
- 27:39Speaker 4: I'm sorry that's gonna be hard to it is hard.
- 27:42Speaker 4: It don't feel bad for it being hard.
- 27:45Speaker 3: It's it's an exciting time again. Kevin wishing the best
- 27:49Speaker 3: being Almost Famous podcast and I've been Ben, I've.
