Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcasts on the Brink, Friday,
- 0:22Speaker 1: July seventeenth, joined this week by my dad, US Basketball
- 0:28Speaker 1: Writers Association Hall of Famer Rick Bosch, also as you
- 0:33Speaker 1: if you're watching on YouTube, as you can see on
- 0:35Speaker 1: the screen, IU football observer since nineteen fifty nine, also
- 0:38Speaker 1: a White Sox fan. Before we get to this week's
- 0:42Speaker 1: conversation on podcast on the Brink, just a reminder if
- 0:45Speaker 1: you're listening to us over on Apple Podcasts or Spotify,
- 0:48Speaker 1: please leave us a five star rating and review over
- 0:51Speaker 1: on YouTube. Like the video, subscribe to the channel, send
- 0:54Speaker 1: the link to somebody else. It's an IU fan that
- 0:56Speaker 1: may enjoy this content. We appreciate your support. As always,
- 1:02Speaker 1: Indiana with a unique opportunity earlier this week from a
- 1:05Speaker 1: basketball perspective, to play an exhibition game. It happened Wednesday night,
- 1:10Speaker 1: no streaming, no radio. I would say not the greatest
- 1:16Speaker 1: estimating the turnout, but I would say somewhere in the
- 1:19Speaker 1: range of three to four thousand fans were there in
- 1:21Speaker 1: Assembly Hall. We were both there on press row watching
- 1:25Speaker 1: this exhibition. So wanted to hop on with a brief
- 1:28Speaker 1: episode just recapping what we were able to see. First
- 1:31Speaker 1: of all, welcome back to the show. Thanks obviously thanks
- 1:37Speaker 1: for taking the time to join us, But just high
- 1:41Speaker 1: level impressions from what you saw on Wednesday night, anything
- 1:46Speaker 1: that stood out. Obviously a unique atmosphere, not your typical
- 1:50Speaker 1: game day atmosphere to Assembly Hall, but it was an
- 1:53Speaker 1: exhibition game. Indiana wore USA jerseys because they're going to
- 1:58Speaker 1: be representing the United States upcoming off Feast to America
- 2:02Speaker 1: games down and approved, But just curious for your thoughts
- 2:04Speaker 1: at a high level on what you saw Wednesday night.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Well, first, thanks for having me on. Secondly, anything I
- 2:13Speaker 2: say needs to be put in the context of a
- 2:16Speaker 2: it's mid July basketball for a team that's only been
- 2:18Speaker 2: practicing for a few weeks. B against the kind of
- 2:23Speaker 2: competition that they will never face during the Big Ten
- 2:27Speaker 2: season for sure, undersized team that looked like they've been
- 2:32Speaker 2: together longer and was a little bit more cohesive, and
- 2:36Speaker 2: you know, didn't have any big men really at all.
- 2:40Speaker 2: So the results have to be viewed through that prism.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Saw a lot of things that I liked, saw a
- 2:49Speaker 2: few things that concerned me, but I saw mainly I
- 2:53Speaker 2: think overall, my number one impression is a more talented
- 2:57Speaker 2: team from one to nine than last year, and a
- 3:02Speaker 2: team that will have to play differently than last year,
- 3:06Speaker 2: and you know, a lot to work with. I like
- 3:11Speaker 2: the fact that it didn't seem last year's team I
- 3:13Speaker 2: thought was so dependent upon two players and if both
- 3:16Speaker 2: of those players didn't really play either good to great.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Every game Indiana struggled, especially in the second half when
- 3:24Speaker 2: you know they went through those droughts where they couldn't score,
- 3:28Speaker 2: got out scored like thirteen oh or whatever it was.
- 3:30Speaker 2: This team looks like it's not going to be dependent
- 3:33Speaker 2: upon one or two guys to get points.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Yeah, the I just want to kind of bounce on
- 3:40Speaker 1: to some players and give some observations. You can tell
- 3:44Speaker 1: me if you agree, disagree otherwise. But obviously, the first
- 3:48Speaker 1: guy that I think a lot of people think about
- 3:51Speaker 1: when they think about the transfer portal classes, Marcus Burton
- 3:53Speaker 1: and the other you know I've watched. I've had the
- 3:56Speaker 1: opportunity to watch three practices this summer. This was your
- 3:58Speaker 1: first time seeing these guys in person. Obviously, Marcus Burton
- 4:02Speaker 1: comes from Notre Dame where he was just a big
- 4:04Speaker 1: part of that program for the last three years, and
- 4:06Speaker 1: all acc type player coming off an injury. He is
- 4:12Speaker 1: a guy that is a little bit undersized. Obviously he's
- 4:15Speaker 1: listed at six foot, but I don't think he's actually
- 4:17Speaker 1: six foot. I think he's closer probably to five to ten.
- 4:19Speaker 1: But that doesn't really stop him in terms of getting
- 4:23Speaker 1: where he wants to be with the ball, because he's
- 4:25Speaker 1: got a lot of quickness. He's got, you know, he
- 4:27Speaker 1: can get to places on the court with his speed
- 4:30Speaker 1: and quickness that maybe Indiana didn't have last year from
- 4:33Speaker 1: the point guard position. Satan Connorway was able to do
- 4:36Speaker 1: that at times and was when he got down hill,
- 4:39Speaker 1: was able to go make some things happen. But Burton
- 4:43Speaker 1: when the game ended, I think we were maybe talking
- 4:45Speaker 1: about this on the way home. On the drive home,
- 4:48Speaker 1: it didn't seem like he was really a standout, and
- 4:50Speaker 1: then you look at the stat sheet, he actually did
- 4:52Speaker 1: a lot of things pretty well. He rebounded the ball well,
- 4:55Speaker 1: he had some assists, he had some steals. To me,
- 4:58Speaker 1: I think the best vers that they can have next
- 5:01Speaker 1: season of Marcus Burton is not the guy maybe at
- 5:03Speaker 1: Notre Dame that averaged nineteen or twenty points, but a
- 5:06Speaker 1: guy that averages fourteen or fifteen points and maybe he
- 5:08Speaker 1: gets five or six assists and just runs the team
- 5:11Speaker 1: in an efficient way overall. You know, I think he's
- 5:15Speaker 1: been solid and impressive through the practices that I've seen
- 5:20Speaker 1: this summer, and also just from a perspective of having
- 5:25Speaker 1: someone back there who I think, you know what you're
- 5:27Speaker 1: going to get out of on a ninth to night basis,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I think you're a big problem was you know, with
- 5:34Speaker 1: connor enright not necessarily having the ability to score. He
- 5:40Speaker 1: has some games obviously where he made some three pointers,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and then Taton Connorway obviously fell out of the rotation
- 5:46Speaker 1: as a year went along. But I think with Marcus
- 5:48Speaker 1: Burton just the first thing I think of his stability,
- 5:52Speaker 1: what he's going to bring to that position.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess the first thing I'd say is that
- 5:58Speaker 2: would jumped out of me about Marcus Burton didn't make
- 6:01Speaker 2: many negative plays, and I think over the last ten
- 6:04Speaker 2: years we've seen Indiana point guards who were at times
- 6:08Speaker 2: a little reckless and made negative plays or tried to
- 6:11Speaker 2: do things they're not really capable of doing, and he
- 6:13Speaker 2: didn't really do that. I've seen Marcus Burton at Notre
- 6:18Speaker 2: Dame when they played Louisville at his absolute best, and
- 6:21Speaker 2: when he plays at that level, he's really good. He's
- 6:24Speaker 2: not like all American good, but he's you know, all
- 6:28Speaker 2: big ten good, and he can shoot, he can pass,
- 6:33Speaker 2: he can rebound. I thought it looked like he was
- 6:37Speaker 2: still trying to get comfortable with his big men and
- 6:39Speaker 2: how to run picking rolls with him. They tried a
- 6:41Speaker 2: little bit of that early and then they kind of
- 6:43Speaker 2: get got away from it. He didn't really I don't
- 6:47Speaker 2: think he really tried to dominate the ball and score
- 6:50Speaker 2: the way I've seen him do it at Notre Dame
- 6:52Speaker 2: in games, like when they got in games in the
- 6:54Speaker 2: second half of the needed points, he would be a
- 6:56Speaker 2: kind of guy and go get a basket. He wasn't
- 6:57Speaker 2: doing much of that. But overall, I give him a
- 7:00Speaker 2: solid B plus to a minus for the way he played.
- 7:02Speaker 2: He looked like, you know, every time he came out
- 7:04Speaker 2: of the game, I noticed the Devrees like pulled him
- 7:06Speaker 2: in close to talk to him, and he went like
- 7:09Speaker 2: they had a good interaction, like he was listening to
- 7:11Speaker 2: what he had to say. So overall, I think point
- 7:13Speaker 2: guard will be one of Indiana's better positions next season.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And then obviously the other perimeter guys just kind of
- 7:22Speaker 1: want to quickly bounce to some of these guys. Bryce lindsay,
- 7:25Speaker 1: I was impressed with just how confident he seemed to
- 7:28Speaker 1: be in what he was doing. He seemed like a
- 7:30Speaker 1: guy that knows where he's supposed to be, kind of
- 7:35Speaker 1: knows where to go to try to get his shots
- 7:38Speaker 1: in the court, is confident in what he's doing. He
- 7:41Speaker 1: handled the ball a little bit. I think he had
- 7:43Speaker 1: six assists as well, So I think he's a guy
- 7:45Speaker 1: that when Burton goes to the bench, is going to
- 7:47Speaker 1: be able to slide over and play some point guard.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I think he's just the best way to describe him
- 7:52Speaker 1: as a confident player. He's not going to be a
- 7:54Speaker 1: guy that's tentative when he gets an opportunity to take
- 7:56Speaker 1: a shot. Darren Harris is a guy that doesn't really
- 8:01Speaker 1: stand out from an athletic standpoint, but I think he's
- 8:03Speaker 1: gonna be a guy that there's gonna be some games
- 8:06Speaker 1: where he gets hot from three and all of a sudden,
- 8:08Speaker 1: he's made three or four three pointers, and that's gonna
- 8:11Speaker 1: be a big help for Indiana because there's obviously a
- 8:14Speaker 1: ton of shooting to replace with Lamar Wilkerson and Tucker
- 8:17Speaker 1: to Reez Nick dorn All moving on to me, that's
- 8:21Speaker 1: the biggest asset that Harris has. But he also had
- 8:22Speaker 1: a couple of plays in the practices that I saw,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and then the other night where he went off the
- 8:26Speaker 1: dribble and scored a basket. I think he can do
- 8:29Speaker 1: a little bit of that as well. Prince Alexander Moody
- 8:32Speaker 1: I thought was impressive coming off the bench. He is
- 8:37Speaker 1: a guy that is a freshman, doesn't look like a freshman.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I think that's the best compliment you can give him.
- 8:42Speaker 1: He's more college ready in terms of his body than
- 8:45Speaker 1: the other two freshmen, Von Carvilla and Trevor Manhertz. I
- 8:50Speaker 1: think Moody's got a real chance to be a what
- 8:54Speaker 1: eight to twelve minute guy on a regular basis when
- 8:56Speaker 1: we get to the meat of the season as a
- 8:58Speaker 1: backup guard. I think just listening to Darren Deries talk
- 9:02Speaker 1: about in post game, he's definitely a guy I think
- 9:04Speaker 1: the coaching staff feels good about it, has some confidence
- 9:06Speaker 1: and just curious for your thoughts on any of those
- 9:09Speaker 1: three guys what you saw in terms of what they
- 9:13Speaker 1: can bring. But I think overall the theme is kind
- 9:16Speaker 1: of what you said at the start. Maybe they don't
- 9:20Speaker 1: have that high level score that they had before in
- 9:23Speaker 1: Lamar Wilkerson, but I feel like from a consistency standpoint,
- 9:28Speaker 1: they have more guys on a given night can probably
- 9:30Speaker 1: get you nine to thirteen fourteen points. I'm not saying
- 9:33Speaker 1: those guys are all going to do that every night,
- 9:35Speaker 1: but I think there's more options and you're not going
- 9:37Speaker 1: to be as dependent on one or two guys to
- 9:39Speaker 1: do everything.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with that. I mean, Lindsey struck me
- 9:43Speaker 2: as competitor, blue collar, willing to mix it up, Comfortable
- 9:49Speaker 2: driving the ball, he did that several times, got to
- 9:52Speaker 2: the rim, comfortable shooting threes, was willing to defend. I
- 10:00Speaker 2: thought he was solid. He looked like a he's not
- 10:02Speaker 2: going to be an all Big ten player, but he'll
- 10:04Speaker 2: be a very solid Big ten player. And uh, some
- 10:07Speaker 2: games he'll contribute big numbers. In some games he probably won't.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I think he'll And he's a he's a what a
- 10:13Speaker 2: fourth year guy? Fourth or fifth year guy? Fourth year
- 10:16Speaker 2: He's mature, he's got a mature body. I liked him.
- 10:21Speaker 2: He's not you know, James black Ben or you know,
- 10:27Speaker 2: trying to think Jordan Hols or somebody like that. But
- 10:30Speaker 2: he's he's a good player. Harris, You're right. He's mainly
- 10:35Speaker 2: a three point shooter. He took seven, made three. All
- 10:40Speaker 2: the seven he took looked like they were within the offense.
- 10:42Speaker 2: He wasn't a guy who was hunting shots. He wasn't
- 10:45Speaker 2: a guy who was forcing shots. When he missed, they
- 10:47Speaker 2: were online. He'll be a guy. I think one night
- 10:50Speaker 2: he might have a game where he it's five or
- 10:51Speaker 2: six three, he's maybe seven. I don't know. He does
- 10:54Speaker 2: look like he could get on a streak. He looks
- 10:56Speaker 2: like a guy who's uh very confident and believes and
- 11:00Speaker 2: a three point shooting. He's not super athletic, so I
- 11:04Speaker 2: do have concerns. I guess about him defensively when he
- 11:07Speaker 2: goes against elite perimeter players. But he came from Duke
- 11:11Speaker 2: where he played for two years, so he's been coached
- 11:14Speaker 2: pretty well and I think he'll be he'll be a
- 11:17Speaker 2: solid contributor. Moody was the guy I loved the most
- 11:20Speaker 2: out of all of them, just because of first of all,
- 11:24Speaker 2: he doesn't look like a freshman. His body is more
- 11:26Speaker 2: mature than more freshmen. Secondly, he doesn't act like a freshman.
- 11:30Speaker 2: He wasn't tentative when he got in the game. He
- 11:34Speaker 2: acted like he was in charge of what they were doing.
- 11:37Speaker 2: He did defend with a lot of enthusiasm. I thought
- 11:41Speaker 2: all the freshmen did. Like the freshman seemed to get
- 11:44Speaker 2: the memo like you got to guard people in college basketball,
- 11:47Speaker 2: and Moody exemplified that more than anybody. He had a
- 11:52Speaker 2: few steals. And how many threes did he make? He mean,
- 11:56Speaker 2: what three three threes?
- 11:57Speaker 3: I think two or three?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Two or three? His shot looked good. I mean, he
- 12:02Speaker 2: looks like a guy to me, like in his sophomore
- 12:06Speaker 2: year he could be an all Big ten type player.
- 12:09Speaker 2: You could tell that he played at a high level
- 12:11Speaker 2: of high school basketball in the Washington, DC area, and
- 12:14Speaker 2: he's been tested by other guys who are good, and
- 12:17Speaker 2: he knows. He's got that sensibility about him that he
- 12:20Speaker 2: belongs a lot of freshmen, no matter how accomplished they are,
- 12:25Speaker 2: when they come into college, you know, outwardly they might
- 12:29Speaker 2: act like they believe it, but inwardly they're not sure.
- 12:32Speaker 2: He looked like to me a guy who believed inwardly
- 12:35Speaker 2: that he belonged out there. And I really liked him.
- 12:38Speaker 2: He's to me, was he rated seventy five or sixty
- 12:41Speaker 2: five or something. He looked like a top forty type
- 12:44Speaker 2: player than me.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Yeah, they're you know, I hesitate to make comparisons between
- 12:50Speaker 1: former players, but one guy he's kind of, I don't
- 12:52Speaker 1: want to say, reminded me of completely, but does some
- 12:57Speaker 1: things similar to how Robert Johnson did when he came
- 13:00Speaker 1: in Indiana. Obviously different in terms of athleticism, but I
- 13:04Speaker 1: think they have some similarities in terms of player and
- 13:07Speaker 1: I think that's you look at a player like what
- 13:11Speaker 1: a guy can potentially become like if he's that level
- 13:14Speaker 1: of player as a freshman. And you know, obviously I
- 13:17Speaker 1: don't think he's going to be starting as a freshman
- 13:19Speaker 1: or playing that many minutes like a guy like rob
- 13:21Speaker 1: Johnson did, But I think as his career progresses along,
- 13:25Speaker 1: if he can be that type of player, then I
- 13:26Speaker 1: think that's a really positive thing for a program. So
- 13:29Speaker 1: he's he's been a guy that you know, I've just
- 13:33Speaker 1: from watching the open practices and watching the exhibition the
- 13:35Speaker 1: other night, I was impressed with what he was able
- 13:38Speaker 1: to do. I want to move on to the front
- 13:40Speaker 1: court here for a second, because I thought that was
- 13:41Speaker 1: a little bit of a mixed bag of other night.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Don't want obviously, draw any conclusions from a exhibition game.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Aiden Cherrelle was super impressed with and been impressed with
- 13:51Speaker 1: him in the open practices. Did have a couple of
- 13:53Speaker 1: plays where he dribbled the ball up the court and
- 13:56Speaker 1: kind of held on to it too long, and I'm
- 13:58Speaker 1: sure they're going to tell him, you know, you got
- 13:59Speaker 1: to stopped doing that.
- 14:00Speaker 3: But made some three pointers.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Definitely, it feels like he's comfortable with the ball on
- 14:08Speaker 1: the perimeter. I think he's gonna be a guy that's
- 14:09Speaker 1: gonna be able to get some assists, guys, you know,
- 14:11Speaker 1: making back cuts and doing different things like that, just
- 14:15Speaker 1: from being you know, just comfortable with the ball. With
- 14:20Speaker 1: his passing, I thought he was pretty good in that regard.
- 14:22Speaker 1: From the perimeter, it's going to be a guy obviously
- 14:24Speaker 1: he can go to the offensive glass.
- 14:25Speaker 3: He's got tremendous length.
- 14:27Speaker 1: He blocked i think three shots in the all in
- 14:28Speaker 1: the first half, and it was it was a smaller opponent,
- 14:32Speaker 1: not necessarily the most athletic, but his length is gonna
- 14:36Speaker 1: make him a guy that can get you know, a
- 14:40Speaker 1: couple of blocks per game. I think on most nights
- 14:42Speaker 1: and be it a turn at the rim, cement Igatoglu
- 14:48Speaker 1: not necessarily a great night for him. I thought a
- 14:51Speaker 1: couple of times he put the ball on the deck
- 14:53Speaker 1: when and dribbled a little bit too much into traffic
- 14:56Speaker 1: and guys were able to get in there swipe the
- 14:58Speaker 1: ball away. When he did get the ball all the
- 15:00Speaker 1: way to the rim, obviously there was no stopping him
- 15:03Speaker 1: because he's a really big guy and just finished plays
- 15:06Speaker 1: pretty well when he got the ball in the paint.
- 15:09Speaker 1: So don't want to draw too many definitive conclusions, but
- 15:12Speaker 1: I was super impressed with Cherrell and obviously have some
- 15:15Speaker 1: questions with Egatoblu, just in terms of, you know, how
- 15:19Speaker 1: he's going to fit in with the offense. Obviously they're
- 15:22Speaker 1: going to play two bigs, but I think for him
- 15:24Speaker 1: to be most effective, he needs to be excellent at
- 15:28Speaker 1: setting screens. He needs to just wall up at the
- 15:30Speaker 1: rim defensively, be a guy that can go in and
- 15:33Speaker 1: get some offensive rebounds, get some easy putbacks, and be
- 15:35Speaker 1: a really good defensive rebounder. Obviously, he was a proven
- 15:38Speaker 1: player last year at SMU, and maybe it was just
- 15:40Speaker 1: a bad night, but I didn't think it was particularly
- 15:42Speaker 1: a great night for him on Wednesday.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Yeah, Charrelle did a lot of good things. He could Actually,
- 15:48Speaker 2: you could see why he was one of the most
- 15:49Speaker 2: sought after players in the portal because he's big, he's physical,
- 15:55Speaker 2: and he's athletic, and he had good bounce, good moves
- 15:58Speaker 2: around the the basket, and he looks like a natural shooter.
- 16:02Speaker 2: He's not like a big guy trying to prove he
- 16:05Speaker 2: can shoot. He can shoot. I'd like to see him
- 16:09Speaker 2: play a little bit more around the basket and use
- 16:12Speaker 2: his athleticism and physicality and size to his advantage. But
- 16:17Speaker 2: you know, he's going to be a front court player
- 16:19Speaker 2: who's going to probably go outside and shoot some threes,
- 16:22Speaker 2: and when it happens, they have to have somebody else
- 16:23Speaker 2: inside to offensive rebound, since Darren Devrez made a point
- 16:28Speaker 2: after the game to say they want to be an
- 16:30Speaker 2: elite offensive rebounding team. If that's going to happen and
- 16:33Speaker 2: Scharell's going to shoot threes, other people are going to
- 16:35Speaker 2: have to be in there and rebound. The two plays
- 16:38Speaker 2: that you're talking about, I think everybody agreed, and the
- 16:41Speaker 2: fans were grumbling in assembly hall. He brought the ball
- 16:45Speaker 2: up the left side of the court in sort of
- 16:46Speaker 2: a crab dribble type of situation, and he wasn't he
- 16:49Speaker 2: wasn't going very fast, and he wasn't gaining an advantage,
- 16:52Speaker 2: and it didn't make any sense of like give the
- 16:54Speaker 2: ball to a guard and get the offense started, especially
- 16:57Speaker 2: in a game they had twenty four second shot clock.
- 17:00Speaker 2: That's why that seemed a little bit unnecessary. But I'm
- 17:05Speaker 2: sure he'll be when they've already watched the game film
- 17:07Speaker 2: on that and they've talked about that. But he's gonna
- 17:10Speaker 2: be good.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Uh.
- 17:11Speaker 2: He's got all the physical qualities that you need to
- 17:16Speaker 2: be a good player in the Big ten and they
- 17:18Speaker 2: haven't had a player like him for a number of years.
- 17:21Speaker 2: He's different than Tray Jackson Davis because Tray Jackson Davis's
- 17:25Speaker 2: game was inside and his Cherelle's game is is not
- 17:32Speaker 2: solely inside, it's both. And he's not as skilled I
- 17:35Speaker 2: think around the basket as Tray Jackson Davis was. And
- 17:39Speaker 2: I don't know about size wise, they're about the same size.
- 17:42Speaker 2: But he's he's the best big man they've probably had
- 17:45Speaker 2: since Trace Jackson Davis. I mean, where was good, but where.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I'd say, where's where's better?
- 17:53Speaker 2: Yeah, bigger, and he's more of a pure center. This
- 17:56Speaker 2: guy's a forward. You're right, and the big from Turkey.
- 18:00Speaker 2: What's his name again? I can't want to mispronounce. He
- 18:07Speaker 2: had an okay game. He looked considering who he was
- 18:11Speaker 2: going against, in the size of the other team, you
- 18:14Speaker 2: would expect him to be more dominant than he was,
- 18:16Speaker 2: and he wasn't. Uh. And the thing that you're talking
- 18:19Speaker 2: about is several times he would get the ball down
- 18:22Speaker 2: by the rim or get offensive rebounding. Instead of just
- 18:25Speaker 2: going back up, he took the ball down a load
- 18:27Speaker 2: to gather himself and get balance and power and take
- 18:30Speaker 2: it back up. And he was stopped from doing it.
- 18:32Speaker 2: And I saw Kenny Johnson one time telling him, like,
- 18:35Speaker 2: don't do that. So that's gonna have to be coached
- 18:37Speaker 2: out of him. They ran some early pick and roll
- 18:40Speaker 2: with him. It was of mixed results. Uh, But you know,
- 18:44Speaker 2: he's he's got some work to do to get better.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Got to become more fluid, gotta become a little bit
- 18:52Speaker 2: more dynamic. But he is big, and he does have
- 18:56Speaker 2: a track record. It's not like we're talking about about
- 18:58Speaker 2: a guy who's you you're looking at. He averaged whatever
- 19:02Speaker 2: he averaged, you know, in some foreign league.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Ten and no, he averaged ten and eight last year.
- 19:06Speaker 1: It's SMUN tournament team.
- 19:08Speaker 2: So he had some good games in the ACC. But
- 19:11Speaker 2: he's not going to be, you know, a first, second
- 19:14Speaker 2: or third team All Conference player. He's going to be
- 19:16Speaker 2: a you know, I think his ceiling is a slightly
- 19:20Speaker 2: above average big ten center. He's not going to be
- 19:23Speaker 2: an elite big ten center unless he makes a big
- 19:25Speaker 2: jump forward.
- 19:25Speaker 3: So I mean, I do think.
- 19:27Speaker 1: He moves pretty well for a guy his size. I mean,
- 19:29Speaker 1: you see a lot of guys that are big men
- 19:34Speaker 1: that never really fully grow into their bodies and don't
- 19:36Speaker 1: really it seems like they're mechanical sometimes in the way
- 19:39Speaker 1: they move some guys. I don't think he's like that
- 19:42Speaker 1: at all. And when I've watched him in the open practices,
- 19:44Speaker 1: he's actually been pretty good. So again, I don't want
- 19:46Speaker 1: to draw too many conclusions off one game, but you know,
- 19:49Speaker 1: I think there's obviously some things to work on. He's
- 19:51Speaker 1: obviously not going to play in these games upcoming in Peru,
- 19:53Speaker 1: so he'll have some time to just kind of watch
- 19:57Speaker 1: from the sidelines in those games. And work on some
- 20:00Speaker 1: things as they get back into fall workouts, and I
- 20:03Speaker 1: think he's going to be a guy that I think
- 20:06Speaker 1: as long as he can be solid defensively at the
- 20:09Speaker 1: rim and be a good rebounder, if you get you know,
- 20:13Speaker 1: eight to ten points from him on a given night,
- 20:16Speaker 1: I think that's probably what you're what the goal is.
- 20:19Speaker 1: He's not going to be a guy that you're going
- 20:20Speaker 1: to just run a bunch of post ups for and
- 20:22Speaker 1: dump the ball down and say go to work. I mean,
- 20:24Speaker 1: he's going to have some games probably where the primary
- 20:28Speaker 1: primarily his offensive touches come from second chance points and
- 20:32Speaker 1: maybe some dump offs at the rim. But I don't
- 20:34Speaker 1: think he's going to be a guy that you just
- 20:35Speaker 1: post up and say go to work. And that would
- 20:37Speaker 1: be more cherrelle at times because he's a little bit
- 20:40Speaker 1: more skilled with the ball around the rim. But overall,
- 20:43Speaker 1: you know, I think he's to go up against some
- 20:47Speaker 1: of these teams in the Big Ten that have the
- 20:49Speaker 1: size that they do. I think you got to have
- 20:51Speaker 1: a guy who's, you know, legit six' ten six to.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Eleven he's seven foot two so at two hundred and seventy,
- 20:56Speaker 1: pounds so not many teams are going to be able
- 20:58Speaker 1: to move him, around so, overall he's in net. Positive,
- 21:00Speaker 1: addition a couple other GUYS i wanted to ask About Trent.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Sislely you, Know I've i've watched him in the open
- 21:08Speaker 1: practices as, well And i've been impressed With he looks
- 21:11Speaker 1: to me stronger in the upper. Body likes he's putting
- 21:13Speaker 1: on a little bit of. Weight AND i asked him
- 21:15Speaker 1: at one point when we had a chance to talk
- 21:17Speaker 1: to him about, that and he mentioned he put on fifteen.
- 21:20Speaker 1: POUNDS i think he can definitely tell in his upper.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Body he's the guy that he played with a ton of.
- 21:25Speaker 1: ENERGY i thought last year at times, too but defensively
- 21:28Speaker 1: had some. BREAKDOWNS i thought the other night he played
- 21:31Speaker 1: relatively well and is a guy that you know long.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Term okay over, there, yeah, OKAY i think he's a
- 21:39Speaker 1: guy that could you know he's going to be the
- 21:43Speaker 1: primary backup at the four and maybe.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Playing some got. IT i agree with.
- 21:54Speaker 2: YOU i, mean he looked like a, sophomore not like a.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Freshman he's been in the weight, Room he's took conditioning,
- 21:59Speaker 2: serious he took getting stronger. Seriously he realized to be
- 22:02Speaker 2: in the big. Ten one thing you can a lot
- 22:05Speaker 2: of happen is to get pushed. Around he looked like
- 22:09Speaker 2: a guy who can probably play several spots on the.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Floor he'll probably have to play some four his primary.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Spot if you, know the big guy gets in foul
- 22:21Speaker 2: trouble And sharrell has to go to the, Center he'll
- 22:24Speaker 2: play power. Forward he could play some small. Forward i'd
- 22:28Speaker 2: imagine In peru he might have to play some, center
- 22:32Speaker 2: you know When sharrell comes off the floor and gets a,
- 22:35Speaker 2: break unless they play. Winker but he's going to play
- 22:39Speaker 2: a variety of. Positions you. Know the thing with him
- 22:43Speaker 2: that he's going to have to prove still is that
- 22:45Speaker 2: he could his outside shot has become more. DEADLY i
- 22:48Speaker 2: know he really struggled last year from three. Right it
- 22:51Speaker 2: didn't take a ton of, him BUT i think he hit,
- 22:52Speaker 2: less what less than twenty? Percent it wasn't.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Great think he was high twenties percentage, okay.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Total you, know he's got, ability and he's the only
- 23:06Speaker 2: guy that was on the team last year who knows the.
- 23:08Speaker 2: System so he's familiar with WHAT cavz wants to do
- 23:13Speaker 2: and how he wants to do. It so he should
- 23:15Speaker 2: become somewhat of a leader in that, regard and he's
- 23:18Speaker 2: a guy that wants to be At indiana because everybody
- 23:19Speaker 2: else left and he wants to. Stay so those are
- 23:22Speaker 2: all things in his. Favor WHAT i think the thing
- 23:25Speaker 2: that needs to happen for him is he needs to
- 23:29Speaker 2: have a stretch of games when he plays and produces
- 23:32Speaker 2: and then it's, like you, know he can relax a
- 23:35Speaker 2: little bit and just. Play he's proven himself that he's a.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Contributor that's like the next marker he needs to get
- 23:42Speaker 2: through of like have, success and then once you have,
- 23:45Speaker 2: success you don't put so much pressure on yourself to
- 23:48Speaker 2: try and prove that you really. Belong.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Yeah He.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Yeah, overall HE'S i think going to be better with
- 23:57Speaker 1: the year of experience under his. Belt he did have
- 24:00Speaker 1: some games last year WHERE i think The marquette, game
- 24:03Speaker 1: in The Kansas state game earlier in the year where
- 24:04Speaker 1: he came in and made an impact against a high major.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Opponent but they need him this year to be productive and.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Reliable just from a death. Perspective he is the primary
- 24:14Speaker 1: backup right now in terms of front court. Players the
- 24:17Speaker 1: last two, guys at least the scholarship guys that wanted
- 24:21Speaker 1: to get To Von carvila. AGAIN i think for a
- 24:25Speaker 1: while everyone's been Saying. CARVALLA i, understand you, Know i've
- 24:28Speaker 1: talked to a couple of. People It's carvila as the last,
- 24:30Speaker 1: name how it's. Pronounced he's a guy THAT i thought
- 24:35Speaker 1: when him And manhartz came in in that first half
- 24:38Speaker 1: off the, bench that was kind of When indiana really
- 24:40Speaker 1: got going there in that first. Quarter, again you don't
- 24:42Speaker 1: draw a ton of conclusions out of an exhibition game
- 24:45Speaker 1: against an overmatched, opponent BUT i think he's a guy
- 24:48Speaker 1: that from a long term development, perspective has a ton of.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Talent was a top, fifty top sixty five type of
- 24:56Speaker 1: kid coming in to high, school are coming in from high,
- 24:59Speaker 1: school a guy that can obviously make some perimeter shots
- 25:03Speaker 1: and finish plays at the. Rim. Uh and Then manhurts
- 25:07Speaker 1: was impressedive the other. Night is to catch and shoot
- 25:09Speaker 1: type of. Player he's obviously got some strength to put
- 25:13Speaker 1: on and you, know gotta continue to build his. Confidence
- 25:20Speaker 1: BUT i thought it was a good first night for
- 25:22Speaker 1: both of those. Guys not necessarily that either one of
- 25:26Speaker 1: them will be.
- 25:28Speaker 3: In the rotation.
- 25:29Speaker 1: PERMANENTLY i think when the meat of the game, starts
- 25:31Speaker 1: but they're GUYS i think they can give you some
- 25:34Speaker 1: energy off the bench at, times especially early in the
- 25:36Speaker 1: season against maybe some of the guarantee type. Opponents AND
- 25:40Speaker 1: i think those are two guys that long, term if
- 25:42Speaker 1: you can keep them around and develop, them they can
- 25:45Speaker 1: be helpful in the.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Program, Yeah carvila looked as, advertised above average, athleticism decent,
- 25:55Speaker 2: shooter good ball, handler can get to the. Rim hustler
- 26:02Speaker 2: going to have to get stronger, though AS i mentioned
- 26:04Speaker 2: in the car in the ride, home not just supper,
- 26:06Speaker 2: body lower body and rear. End your whole body has
- 26:10Speaker 2: to get stronger to hold up in the big ten
- 26:12Speaker 2: because you're going against you, know twenty, two twenty, three
- 26:16Speaker 2: twenty one year old men who've been in the weight
- 26:18Speaker 2: room and are naturally built to be. Stronger so when
- 26:21Speaker 2: he does, that have a better chance to do the
- 26:24Speaker 2: things he wants to. Do Matt hurts looked like a better.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Shooter he looked like a guy who believes every shot
- 26:31Speaker 2: he's going to take is going to go. In WHAT
- 26:34Speaker 2: i liked about him is the shots that he took
- 26:36Speaker 2: were at the three point. Line he wasn't shooting some
- 26:39Speaker 2: of those shots that bugged me last year of four
- 26:42Speaker 2: or five feet behind the three point, LINE i.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Didn't in, FACT i didn't see anybody do.
- 26:48Speaker 2: That, yeah they, didn't and that's. GOOD i hope that
- 26:52Speaker 2: continues because they're only worth three points no matter if
- 26:54Speaker 2: they're from twenty two feet or twenty seven, feet and
- 26:58Speaker 2: the percentage is much higher at twenty two. Ft and
- 27:01Speaker 2: he he looked like a guy who knew that he
- 27:05Speaker 2: was a three point, shooter had been coached to be
- 27:07Speaker 2: a three point, shooter and knew how to get to a,
- 27:10Speaker 2: spot and it's up then to somebody else to get
- 27:13Speaker 2: him to the. Ball and when he got the, ball
- 27:15Speaker 2: he he had a quick enough release that it would
- 27:18Speaker 2: be hard for some people to close out on. Him
- 27:21Speaker 2: so again has to get stronger upper body and lower
- 27:25Speaker 2: body has to get a little bit. Quicker probably carvallis carvelous.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Quicker but they both have potential to be really good.
- 27:33Speaker 2: PLAYERS i don't know about impactful players as freshman as
- 27:36Speaker 2: much As moody's going to. Be BUT i, think if you,
- 27:40Speaker 2: know it's dangerous to say that in today's world because
- 27:42Speaker 2: you never know who's going to. Stay but he's a
- 27:45Speaker 2: guy THAT i think could have a really nice. Career,
- 27:48Speaker 2: uh he's it's got a Little Brian evans in. HIM
- 27:51Speaker 2: i GUESS i compare WHENEVER i see a left hand
- 27:53Speaker 2: or At, INDIANA i compare him To Brian, evans and
- 27:56Speaker 2: he's got that kind of a. Shot.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Yeah right, now he's primarily just catch and shoot.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Guy BUT i think for him to be to maximize his,
- 28:04Speaker 1: potential this is man hurts long, term he's gonna have
- 28:06Speaker 1: to be able to do a couple of things off
- 28:07Speaker 1: the dribble and just be more than a catch and shoot.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Guy but if you're six, eight which he looks to,
- 28:13Speaker 1: me to me like he's legitimately six seven six, eight
- 28:17Speaker 1: and you can shoot the three like, he you, know
- 28:20Speaker 1: at least appears to be able, to and how he
- 28:22Speaker 1: was billed as a shooter coming, in he's gonna have.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Value so those two, guys, again as you, mentioned and
- 28:28Speaker 1: AS i said, earlier it's about retaining them and then
- 28:33Speaker 1: developing them over the next couple of, years AND i
- 28:35Speaker 1: think they can definitely be productive pieces in the.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Future.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Obviously Now indiana goes on to the Feastsu America games
- 28:44Speaker 1: down In, Lima. Peru right, now details are pretty scarce
- 28:48Speaker 1: just in terms of what the schedule is going to
- 28:50Speaker 1: look like down. There as of, yesterday you, KNOW i
- 28:53Speaker 1: went on the website down there and still no schedule
- 28:56Speaker 1: for the. Games we'll see how everything develops, there but
- 28:59Speaker 1: my understanding is they're gonna start playing next week early
- 29:03Speaker 1: in the.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Week.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Uh still no word for sure as to whether the
- 29:06Speaker 1: games are gonna be available to. Stream, originally they had
- 29:09Speaker 1: mentioned that they thought there was gonna be an option
- 29:11Speaker 1: to stream those. Games so we'll obviously be following From
- 29:15Speaker 1: afar and you Asked darren De, REES i found a
- 29:18Speaker 1: couple of interesting questions just about the competition level that
- 29:20Speaker 1: they're gonna play down. There he admitted that they're not
- 29:24Speaker 1: really sure who they're gonna. Play they they don't know
- 29:25Speaker 1: much about these. Teams SO i think it's gonna be
- 29:28Speaker 1: actually a pretty good learning experience for these. Guys they're
- 29:30Speaker 1: not gonna these games aren't going to be scouted like
- 29:32Speaker 1: a normal college.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Game they're not gonna have a bunch of.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Film, Uh they're gonna have to go in AND i
- 29:37Speaker 1: think in some cases play against teams with older. GUYS i,
- 29:40Speaker 1: mean there's gonna be, Teams like my understanding is there's
- 29:42Speaker 1: gonna be a team For, Peru, Brazil. ARGENTINA i, mean
- 29:46Speaker 1: these are countries that they could have some some good
- 29:48Speaker 1: talented players that and they're gonna BE i, think probably
- 29:52Speaker 1: motivated to play good against a team from The United
- 29:56Speaker 1: states and have a chance, to you, know to when
- 29:59Speaker 1: they an upset.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Game SO i think.
- 30:01Speaker 1: It'll be interesting to, watch just obviously following it From,
- 30:04Speaker 1: afar how they perform down, there and a good opportunity
- 30:08Speaker 1: for the young guys to get down there and get some.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Experience, YEAH i thought he mentioned That brazil might be
- 30:14Speaker 2: the first team they, play And brazil has a really
- 30:16Speaker 2: good history in international. BASKETBALL i covered one year when
- 30:20Speaker 2: they beat THE us and The PanAm games In. Indianapolis
- 30:22Speaker 2: they basketball is probably their second favorite sport down there after,
- 30:26Speaker 2: soccer and typically in these things they are guys that
- 30:29Speaker 2: are probably going to be twenty three to twenty six years.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Old AND i believe he mentioned That baylor went down
- 30:34Speaker 2: there last year and got beat SO i don't expect
- 30:37Speaker 2: him to go five and zero or whatever it. Called
- 30:40Speaker 2: AND i think it's a good thing that it's you,
- 30:42Speaker 2: know teams they haven't, scouted so it's not going to
- 30:45Speaker 2: be all this film breakdown it's just, like go out and,
- 30:48Speaker 2: play and it's good for the coaching. Staff this is
- 30:50Speaker 2: what they're. Doing we have to adjust on the. Fly
- 30:53Speaker 2: they don't have a time to make a game plan
- 30:55Speaker 2: the day before and set it. Up they have to
- 30:57Speaker 2: figure out what the other team's doing and what they're
- 30:59Speaker 2: taking an advantage of and figure out as the game.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Unfolds and it'll be good for him to play. Too
- 31:06Speaker 2: without the big, guy other guys will have to play
- 31:09Speaker 2: different positions and they'll get more minutes and THAT'LL i
- 31:12Speaker 2: imagine that'll Help manhurtzon And carvilill get more minutes Because
- 31:17Speaker 2: i'll have to play it at the forward spots as
- 31:19Speaker 2: sicily moves. Inside so all in, all, plus anytime you
- 31:23Speaker 2: play games like, that it's a. Plus you just have
- 31:26Speaker 2: to hope that nobody gets hurt or sick or, whatever
- 31:28Speaker 2: and then they get a, BREAK i Think Darren dere,
- 31:31Speaker 2: said until the school starts at the end Of.
- 31:36Speaker 1: August all, Right, well thanks everybody as always for listening
