- 0:05The Winter Olympics of discontent.
- 0:08Yes, this is Mark and Pete, 2 blokes with half an opinion.
- 0:13Now here's our first thought. Thrills and chills.
- 0:17The Winter Olympics brings skating rings, which gives all
- 0:21the skiers A thrill. But perhaps it's time to achieve
- 0:24harder things like going backwards and uphill Yes, it
- 0:28would make it far more exciting. I'm sure it would do.
- 0:31But there is a serious side to this.
- 0:33Well, the Winter Olympics um, this is the games that's taking
- 0:37in uh, Milano Cortina 2026. It is without any doubt, I think
- 0:43one of the most exciting sporting events on the calendar.
- 0:46But there is a sinister side to this yes, why that is and that's
- 0:50the future of the Olympics itself.
- 0:52From a winter perspective, there are rising temperatures that
- 0:56have led to insufficient snow levels with more snow, small
- 0:59competitions cancelled year on year.
- 1:02This has meant that obviously people are cancelling their
- 1:04holidays, they're cancelling the event, and this is a concern for
- 1:07the International Olympic Committee.
- 1:09Mr. Pete, I ask you, can you tell me, is this something that
- 1:14is a concern because of the climate change that we've seen
- 1:17and the mass amount of information that's come from
- 1:20scientists, politicians and many others?
- 1:22Or are we just seeing that really the games are on a
- 1:25slippery slope? It's nice to put you.
- 1:29Well, the lack of interest in the Olympics as as well as the
- 1:34Winter Olympics, the whole concept of it.
- 1:37I see seen this happening over the past few Olympics.
- 1:41It used to be a big event. No longer.
- 1:43I think it's no longer as big as it was.
- 1:47Let's put it like that. I mean, until sometime after it
- 1:51started the Winter Olympics, I didn't even know it was on.
- 1:54You know, someone mentioned it to me.
- 1:56Oh, is that not, and that's it was because of someone
- 1:59mentioning to me I wasn't, I didn't see it in the media at
- 2:03all. And it it's, I think it's not.
- 2:07This is my point I'm going to make.
- 2:09I don't think it's, I think the climate change is, is an excuse.
- 2:16Yeah, you could have lack of snow due if you have warmer
- 2:20weather. Sure, of course that's true.
- 2:22But we know that there are ways to counter out that because
- 2:24there's always been times when you have lack of snow in the
- 2:26winter and you can produce artificial snow.
- 2:29The problem is not that. The problem is that people are
- 2:32losing interest and here's why this is the the definitive peak
- 2:36theory as to why that's happening.
- 2:39I think it's like it's it's similar to the idea of wokeness.
- 2:44It's the all, all the political shenanigans and ideas which make
- 2:49it distasteful. You know, people, people are so
- 2:54divided against each other. Their politics takes over.
- 2:59It's in Olympics. You have Black Lives Matter and
- 3:03other demonstrators taking it over.
- 3:05Then on top of that you have people cheating, whether they're
- 3:08using drugs in the event. In the end, you think I can't be
- 3:12bothered to watch that? I'd rather watch something else.
- 3:15If I want to watch sport, I'll watch a sport that I know I like
- 3:20and that I know they're actually competing properly and I'm not
- 3:23going to have politics shoved down my phone, whatever that
- 3:25sport might be. So I think it's a combination of
- 3:27those things, not the weather. That's the Pete theory.
- 3:31Well, indeed. Well, here's the mark theory,
- 3:33because I think that the Winter Olympics is a great complement
- 3:37to sporting activities such as new events.
- 3:40And we've seen things like, you know, the the new debut of ski
- 3:44mountaineering. We've seen obviously the
- 3:47skateboarding, the tremendous athletics that typically tends
- 3:50to happen in this, the gymnastics that take place on
- 3:53ice. It's quite extraordinary.
- 3:55Anyone who's watched this would recognise the artistry behind
- 4:00it, but also the physical endeavours.
- 4:03I will say do not try it at home folks, because it looks very
- 4:07dangerous. But the fact of the matter is
- 4:09they've tried to invigorate it. They've brought in new sports.
- 4:12So from that perspective I would say that's a good thing.
- 4:16And I know that they've, it's not just about the Olympic
- 4:19Games, they've also brought in World Championships and many
- 4:22other seasonal events that use the, the of ice, the winter side
- 4:29of it. And I think in many ways that
- 4:31that's encouraging because it brings in a fresh sort of
- 4:34perspective. And there are a lot of people
- 4:36who are very much interested in that.
- 4:37And I, I certainly for one, am very excited to see it.
- 4:40I do agree that sometimes these type of events get hijacked.
- 4:44They get hijacked by politics and many other things.
- 4:47On the climate side. I still have a concern over
- 4:50this. I'm not entirely sure that
- 4:52necessarily there is as big a concern as they're saying.
- 4:56I, I think that it's, is, this is not new.
- 4:59If you actually go back through decades of Winter Olympics gone
- 5:03by, this has always been a problem for the Winter Olympics.
- 5:07Does the venue and do the events have enough ice, particularly
- 5:12the open air events? Of course, anything that's
- 5:13indoor you can control, you know, whether it's, you know,
- 5:16ice hockey or if it's curling or anything like that.
- 5:20And so, you know, for me, I think there's enough variety in
- 5:23the, in the sport. But where I think it's gone
- 5:26wrong is they just haven't promoted it.
- 5:28To your point, you didn't know who was on.
- 5:31I had to sort of bring it to your attention.
- 5:34I have been watching it and I will say that, you know, I, I, I
- 5:37admire what the athletes are doing and the sporting
- 5:41endeavours and the competition is, it's very intense.
- 5:44It's very fast in many ways. I think in some ways it's, it
- 5:49offers a little bit more than the normal traditional athletics
- 5:52that you would see at Summer Olympics.
- 5:55I like the fact that they've got it on the calendar, but I think
- 5:58that maybe they've gone wrong a little bit in their marketing.
- 6:02I, I, I think there's enough in there for people to, to gain
- 6:06something from, there's enough variety.
- 6:09But here's the thing then, do you think that sort of when
- 6:14they're selecting this particular event, you know, they
- 6:17start to look at future Olympics, Winter Olympics, that
- 6:21is, is it that maybe they should have more events on the calendar
- 6:26to try and encourage people? But I think it's the TV, isn't
- 6:30it? That if you don't have that
- 6:31media slot, then it's always going to be a problem, isn't it?
- 6:35And let's be honest, you can't have winter throughout the
- 6:38entire season, whereas you can have athletics pretty much
- 6:41anytime. Yes well, I think I think the
- 6:45only you've got to have a real campaign to win people back to
- 6:49the Olympics, including the Winter Olympics.
- 6:51Yes, I I like the Winter Olympics there's and some
- 6:54incredible physical feats. A big fan of the skiing slalom,
- 6:58which is just amazing that they managed to go get such a pace
- 7:02and and making turns going down. So yeah, there's some great
- 7:06events there. I'm not certainly not against it
- 7:10being successful. I would like it to be
- 7:11successful. I didn't know it was on but then
- 7:13I watched started to watch it once it had been on.
- 7:15So once I realised it was on. So it's not that I believe
- 7:20people have lost interest for the reasons that I said and it
- 7:23need people need to be won back and the you can only do that
- 7:29through a successful PR campaign, which includes new
- 7:32media getting people on board with it.
- 7:34What? I think this is a serious point,
- 7:36listeners, I think really they should consider sponsoring the
- 7:40Marc and Pete Show in order to get the word.
- 7:42Out there, but or. Some other lesser podcasts like
- 7:45Joe. Rogan, another chilling.
- 7:47You need, yeah, they need to, they need to have a proper
- 7:52campaign in order to get get, not just get news out that it's
- 7:56on getting people back interested in watching it.
- 7:59There's so much to say in its favour.
- 8:03I mean, people love watching dangerous events.
- 8:06Why not this, you know, So it's, it's and the, and the tremendous
- 8:10skill and the, the strength and the beautiful women in tight
- 8:15costume. But what?
- 8:16What is there not to not to love about the Winter Olympics?
- 8:20Well, I mean coming back to your.
- 8:21Point. Yeah, go ahead.
- 8:23Well, I was going to say, look, what do I think is unusual in
- 8:26this particular case? And this is where I think it has
- 8:28got something which is slightly different is the artistry.
- 8:31So if you take something like figure skating, which does have
- 8:34technical elements to it, but let's be honest, it is also an
- 8:37interpretation of music and so on.
- 8:39So I think that offers something different.
- 8:40And then you've got something like bobsleigh, which is a
- 8:42completely different thing altogether.
- 8:44A-Team sport where essentially you're taking a, a craft down a,
- 8:49a slope and trying to win, you know, obviously the, the, the
- 8:52fastest time and the, this is very dangerous, believe me.
- 8:56And, and then you get to, you know, on the other side of it,
- 8:59you've then got the snowboarding, which in itself,
- 9:02as I've said before, is an incredible sort of athletic
- 9:07event in itself. And to me, I think that the fact
- 9:11that the, the Winter Olympics has such a variety is surprising
- 9:15that the, the viewing figures are not as high or the
- 9:18following. But I come back to the point
- 9:20here is, is that they are limited by season.
- 9:23And that's always going to be a challenge, yes.
- 9:26But I do think that what they need is they definitely need
- 9:29something else to try and maybe bring it together in a way that
- 9:35builds up the momentum. I don't think they do enough to
- 9:38promote it. I do agree with that.
- 9:40And here's the other thing, I can't name the names of the
- 9:44athletes. And, and I think that one of the
- 9:46things that you typically find in other sports, other athletic
- 9:49sports is you can typically tend to sort of name some of the
- 9:53Olympic winners and you follow them.
- 9:56So it's a bit like other sports, whether you have tennis,
- 9:58etcetera, that you you get to know the the characters.
- 10:00I think that this is where the sponsorship comes in.
- 10:03So I think that the the sport is in a good place in terms of its
- 10:06format. I think it's the marketing
- 10:08exercise that's key. Yes, I mean, I agree with you
- 10:13that it's it's not really climate change that's the
- 10:17problem. I would sort of guide the
- 10:20President of the IOC and said, look, this is your opportunity
- 10:24as you say, come on to the Mark and Pete show.
- 10:27This will certainly raise your profile.
- 10:29If not, the only other thing to consider is putting the whole
- 10:32event on ice.
