- 0:03Speaker 1: Well, here he is. He's brought us some numb numbs.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Ben Lee, the donut critic is here. And it's not
- 0:11Speaker 1: donuts today. It's candy.
- 0:13Speaker 2: It's candy.
- 0:15Speaker 3: It's candy season right now, right, We're getting into fall
- 0:18Speaker 3: and soon to be Halloween, and we need to start
- 0:22Speaker 3: thinking about up leveling our candy game.
- 0:24Speaker 4: I'm a grown up and I need better than gas
- 0:27Speaker 4: station candy. Is that what you're saying?
- 0:29Speaker 2: You deserve it, You deserve it.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I love coffee, English coffee.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yes, to start there, Yeah, so let's start there. So
- 0:36Speaker 2: this is a not a new company in Utah.
- 0:41Speaker 3: So a lot of these companies, you know, depending on
- 0:43Speaker 3: how they start, they kind of show up in different ways.
- 0:46Speaker 3: This one showed up as a wholesale business first and
- 0:49Speaker 3: then decided to open their doors for us to come
- 0:51Speaker 3: and look. So about twenty eight years ago they started
- 0:55Speaker 3: this business called Sir Walter Candy in California. So he
- 1:02Speaker 3: had gotten a recipe book from an old family friend.
- 1:06Speaker 3: He'd gone back east it was in New Jersey, and
- 1:09Speaker 3: decided to you know, learn the art of candy. His
- 1:14Speaker 3: name was Walter Ziddel and he was teaching these new owners,
- 1:20Speaker 3: Alfonso and Alejandro how to make candy, and you know,
- 1:25Speaker 3: it was kind of like his dying wish. He had
- 1:27Speaker 3: sent his recipe books out to him, and his dying
- 1:31Speaker 3: wish was that his candy recipes and what would be
- 1:36Speaker 3: coming about in this candy store would would delight all
- 1:40Speaker 3: of us.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Where is this candy store?
- 1:43Speaker 3: So this candy store is in I think it's Murray.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Is that thirty eight South? So it's thirty eight twenty
- 1:49Speaker 3: eight South and main Street. Is that considered Murray, South
- 1:53Speaker 3: Lake South Salt Lake, Murray, it's on the border. But
- 1:56Speaker 3: they just recently did their grand opening and you can
- 2:01Speaker 3: see the candy being made there. So it's a huge
- 2:03Speaker 3: facility that it's a thirty six thousand square foot facility,
- 2:07Speaker 3: so it's a factory kind of like a store front
- 2:11Speaker 3: and then some windows and you can actually get a
- 2:13Speaker 3: tour there too.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I really can, Sir Waltercandy dot com.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yep, so on our website you'll mainly see their wholesale
- 2:21Speaker 3: stuff there just because they're newly opened. Really in August
- 2:25Speaker 3: is when they decided to open that soorefront. Okay, but no,
- 2:28Speaker 3: their love for candy and that wish to push that candy,
- 2:33Speaker 3: you know, to future generations and for us to enjoy.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Has turned out beautifully. I mean, you guys are trying
- 2:38Speaker 2: it right, Yeah.
- 2:39Speaker 3: We have.
- 2:39Speaker 2: They had a food truck for a bit, didn't they
- 2:41Speaker 2: in California.
- 2:43Speaker 3: So they had California Food Truck in California for farmers' markets.
- 2:47Speaker 3: They had a little operation there, and then it was
- 2:49Speaker 3: Utah the place they wanted to come.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I mean, this is the place.
- 2:52Speaker 4: So now you told us the first thing we should
- 2:54Speaker 4: try is that, as you said, it looks like a
- 2:57Speaker 4: little chicken wing. That's not what it is. What explain
- 2:59Speaker 4: what it was?
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I said, the best thing you're gonna try on
- 3:02Speaker 3: your plate is, yes, it looks like a chicken wing.
- 3:05Speaker 3: And what it is, it's it's a apple pie bite.
- 3:08Speaker 3: So it's a dried a piece of dried apple covered
- 3:12Speaker 3: in caramel, white chocolate and then dusted with cinnamon and sugar.
- 3:16Speaker 2: And it's delightful.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I mean, basically think about a caramel apple, but in
- 3:21Speaker 3: a very consumable you know, because.
- 3:23Speaker 4: That's the problem with a caramel apple. They're hard to eat.
- 3:27Speaker 2: They're very hard to eat.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I'm up to the challenge, and honestly, like my teeth
- 3:32Speaker 3: just aren't prepared for it anymore, and my kids can't
- 3:34Speaker 3: eat it because they have braces.
- 3:35Speaker 2: And so these are beautiful because it does take it
- 3:38Speaker 2: very good.
- 3:39Speaker 3: But yeah, they're they're.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Really addicting, so you got to be careful with those.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Next, Bill wanted to talk about the toffee.
- 3:46Speaker 1: This is really good.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Yeah, so the English toffee that is toffee is the
- 3:50Speaker 3: amount of nuts that is covering. That is what you
- 3:54Speaker 3: want to see. I mean, that's the thing about what
- 3:56Speaker 3: you'll see at Sir Walter. Their ingredients are really high
- 3:59Speaker 3: quality and what they do really just pushes all of
- 4:02Speaker 3: those ingredients into every bite. My favorite, I don't know
- 4:05Speaker 3: if you've tried the coconut cashewritle. Yeah, very really really
- 4:12Speaker 3: really delicious. Sometimes brittle gets a little brittle, a little
- 4:15Speaker 3: brittle now, a little like over toasted, and this one
- 4:18Speaker 3: was perfectly done.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, Now tell me about the pecans.
- 4:23Speaker 3: So those are just candied pecans, and I think that
- 4:26Speaker 3: they do those really well. As you know, you can
- 4:28Speaker 3: tell that they're crisp on the outside but still have
- 4:31Speaker 3: that really soft pecan in the inside.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Am I am I wrong? I'm getting a little coffee.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So it wasn't listed on the ingredients.
- 4:39Speaker 3: I would have to ask them, but I think it's
- 4:42Speaker 3: just the toasting us that must be it. I mean,
- 4:44Speaker 3: and they have a lot of other stuff going on,
- 4:46Speaker 3: and so you know there's obviously you know, mixtures and
- 4:49Speaker 3: things that can get into those, but yeah, I think
- 4:51Speaker 3: it quite And then the popcorn, Yeah, so that's Rocky
- 4:54Speaker 3: Road popcorn. So it's like the up leveled version, you know, Bill,
- 5:00Speaker 3: you and I were talking about the Zebra corn and Costco.
- 5:02Speaker 3: This is like the up leveled small business version of it.
- 5:05Speaker 3: And I think it's super delicious.
- 5:08Speaker 2: There's almonds in there too.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Overall, like I think I'm serving a pretty good breakfast
- 5:14Speaker 3: for you all.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You know, candy for breakfast.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Now, can you get this? All of these things they
- 5:20Speaker 1: all have them all the time.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Yes, So these are all the time things and it's
- 5:25Speaker 3: in their storefront. And that's the beautiful thing about it.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Before you'd have to go to where they are whole selling,
- 5:30Speaker 3: but now with that storefront you can go in see
- 5:32Speaker 3: it being made. And by there they also have where
- 5:36Speaker 3: you have the cup of strawberries and it's drizzled with
- 5:38Speaker 3: the chocolate.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You know.
- 5:39Speaker 3: The viral thing that we've seen in London and a
- 5:42Speaker 3: few other places pocketable popping up.
- 5:43Speaker 1: That's good.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yeah, so go in there, get your strawberries drizzled with chocolate,
- 5:48Speaker 3: and you'll be very delighted.
- 5:51Speaker 4: I like your idea that if you're going to have candy.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Get some high quality candy candy.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I mean you're always going to steal some of your
- 5:59Speaker 3: kids candies or or you know, eat out of the
- 6:00Speaker 3: candy bowl when it's Halloween, So why not have that candy,
- 6:03Speaker 3: the good candy leading up to it?
- 6:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, yeah, we had some Halloween candy lying
- 6:09Speaker 5: around and there was a box of nerds there and
- 6:11Speaker 5: I was like, I haven't had these in years. You know,
- 6:14Speaker 5: it's sugar, yeah, nothing, nothing special, nothing, but this this
- 6:19Speaker 5: is something you'll remember, you know.
- 6:21Speaker 3: And now one other thing that they do that's super
- 6:23Speaker 3: popular is the iced or the cold hot chocolate hot chocolate.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yep.
- 6:29Speaker 3: So it's it's really delightful there, and since it's still hot,
- 6:33Speaker 3: you can go in and it's not like you're, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 3: having a cold spell out here and getting.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Cold hot chocolate.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Is it kind of slushy? Is that what?
- 6:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a little slushy.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's very similar to what you'd get at Serendipity,
- 6:46Speaker 3: you know, the popular New York City one.
- 6:47Speaker 2: But I would love that. It's it's it's really delicious.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Another thing that I wanted to let you guys know.
- 6:54Speaker 3: About, the Fall Festival for cross E is going on
- 6:57Speaker 3: right now, and you guys got.
- 6:59Speaker 2: To get out.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Those are just so fun. They have donuts there and
- 7:03Speaker 3: so they do.
- 7:04Speaker 4: They have the apple cider donuts or those though.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I brought those in, or I brought those in,
- 7:08Speaker 3: or I brought the lemon ones in this last time.
- 7:11Speaker 3: But they are the best in the state of Utah.
- 7:14Speaker 3: So if you want the best apple cider donut, go
- 7:17Speaker 3: to Crossey. They just barely opened this last Friday, are they.
- 7:21Speaker 3: They're up north Salt Lake, so it's like twenty six
- 7:24Speaker 3: hundred north, you know, and kind of.
- 7:26Speaker 2: By the airport.
- 7:28Speaker 3: But it's just a little family farm and they have
- 7:31Speaker 3: a bunch of games and animals and good food. They're
- 7:34Speaker 3: burgers and fries and such are are really good as well,
- 7:37Speaker 3: but the donuts are my main draw there.
- 7:41Speaker 4: We'll go spend an afternoon there.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I know you do burgers and stuff too, best Hamburger
- 7:46Speaker 1: top ten Hamburger. I had one yesterday Burr Trail Grill,
- 7:53Speaker 1: the Bird Trail Grill in Boulder, Utah.
- 7:55Speaker 2: In Boulder, Utah, yeah, okay.
- 7:57Speaker 4: To make it to Boulder very often.
- 8:00Speaker 3: I have been there once, but that that is quite
- 8:02Speaker 3: out of the way. There's there's another one that's in
- 8:05Speaker 3: a truck in the middle of Utah too that I'm.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Yeah they yessuh, I forget what they call it. My
- 8:11Speaker 1: wife and daughter had it. They were not particularly impressed.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I mean they were real busy. We'd rove by.
- 8:17Speaker 3: It looked like it was like the over to the
- 8:18Speaker 3: top with like the mac and cheese type of stuff.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Not necessarily my vibe, but I mean Riches downtown here
- 8:25Speaker 3: is one of my favorites, and I think that that
- 8:27Speaker 3: is one of the more cheney ones. Seven Brothers is
- 8:31Speaker 3: super good. They're burgers, so it's a it's a Hawaii brand.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I'm actually going out to Hawaii in January and gonna
- 8:37Speaker 3: go see their like main place, and they have desserts
- 8:39Speaker 3: and whatnot. But I've had it a few times here,
- 8:42Speaker 3: especially if you like barbecue sauce. Their burgers are really
- 8:45Speaker 3: really good.
- 8:46Speaker 1: That sounds good.
- 8:47Speaker 5: Yeah, So the candy place we were talking about, Sir
- 8:49Speaker 5: Walter Candy, thirty eight to twenty eight South Main Street.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Yes, go get your candy on, you can do it.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Sounds great.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I gotta try that croze upon Chotku.
- 9:02Speaker 1: And this was just enough to make my stomach a
- 9:04Speaker 1: little sick.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Keep going.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yeah, if you have suggestions for Ben the donut critic
- 9:10Speaker 4: on especially interested in like local places, new places pop
- 9:14Speaker 4: up all the time, and he's willing to go. Try
- 9:16Speaker 4: him out and let us know what he thinks. Just
- 9:18Speaker 4: go to your Instagram page the don't is it the
- 9:21Speaker 4: donut Critic or just don'nut just don't it? Just don't ye?
- 9:24Speaker 2: All right, thanks much, man, all right,
