And today, I have a practical topic in mind. Have you ever gotten lost in a new city? Luna: Oh, all the time. I have zero sense of direction. Lucas: Well, today we're learning how to ask for and give directions in Amharic. Super useful if you ever visit Ethiopia. Luna: Yes! I'd love to be able to find my way around. So where do we start? Lucas: Let's start with the basics: right and left. 'Right' is 'ቀኝ'. Say it with me: ቀኝ. Luna: ቀኝ. That's pretty straightforward. Lucas: And 'left' is 'ግራ'. ግራ. Luna: ግራ. Lucas: Now let's add 'straight ahead'. That's 'ቀጥ ብለህ'. Listen: ቀጥ ብለህ. Luna: ቀጥ ብለህ. That's a bit of a mouthful. Lucas: It is. Let's break it down: ቀጥ means 'straight', and ብለህ means 'saying' or 'going'. So together, 'straight ahead'. Luna: Okay, ቀጥ ብለህ. I'll practice that. Lucas: Now, to ask someone to show you the way, you can say: 'መንገዱን ልታሳየኝ ትችላለህ?' That means 'Can you show me the way?' Luna: Wow, that's long. መንገዱን ልታሳየኝ ትችላለህ? Luna: መንገዱን ልታሳየኝ ትችላለህ? I think I got it. Lucas: Excellent! Now let's put it all together with a little scene. Imagine you're lost and you ask someone: 'መንገዱን ልታሳየኝ ትችላለህ?' They might say: 'ወደ ቀኝ ታጠፍ' meaning 'Turn right'. Luna: ወደ ቀኝ ታጠፍ. Turn right. Lucas: Yes. And 'turn left' is 'ወደ ግራ ታጠፍ'. Let's practice both: ወደ ቀኝ ታጠፍ. Luna: ወደ ቀኝ ታጠፍ. Lucas: ወደ ግራ ታጠፍ. Luna: ወደ ግራ ታጠፍ. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's imagine a short conversation. I'll be the local, you'll be the lost traveler. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: You say: 'መንገዱን ልታሳየኝ ትችላለህ?' Luna: መንገዱን ልታሳየኝ ትችላለህ? Lucas: And I answer: 'አዎ። ቀጥ ብለህ ሂድ፣ ከዚያ ወደ ቀኝ ታጠፍ።' That means 'Yes. Go straight, then turn right.' Luna: So 'ቀጥ ብለህ ሂድ' is 'go straight'? Lucas: Exactly. 'ሂድ' means 'go'. So 'ቀጥ ብለህ ሂድ' – go straight. Then 'ከዚያ ወደ ቀኝ ታጠፍ' – then turn right. Luna: ቀጥ ብለህ ሂድ፣ ከዚያ ወደ ቀኝ ታጠፍ. I'm going to repeat that a few times. Lucas: Good! Let's do a quick review.
