- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Real Talk with Mike D. All right. Welcome
- 0:07Speaker 1: back to Real Talk with Mike D. I am the one,
- 0:09Speaker 1: the only, and the original Mike D. Good morning, good afternoon,
- 0:15Speaker 1: or good evening, wherever you're listening to me from. Today's
- 0:20Speaker 1: episode is a little bit different because today isn't about
- 0:23Speaker 1: pretending I have everything figured out. Because God knows I
- 0:27Speaker 1: do not. Today is about something a lot of us
- 0:31Speaker 1: have struggled with. Today I'm talking about my diet. Today
- 0:39Speaker 1: is day one back on the diet. And I'm going
- 0:43Speaker 1: to be honest with you right from the beginning. I
- 0:46Speaker 1: don't love the word diet. Because when I hear the
- 0:50Speaker 1: word diet, I immediately start thinking about everything I supposedly
- 0:54Speaker 1: cannot have. I think to myself, I can't eat this.
- 1:00Speaker 1: can't eat that. And then I'm saying to myself, don't
- 1:04Speaker 1: have that. You know better. And before you know it,
- 1:09Speaker 1: you're miserable. You're thinking about food constantly. And you're wondering
- 1:14Speaker 1: why you even started. So I'm looking at this differently.
- 1:20Speaker 1: This isn't about starving myself. This isn't about trying to
- 1:23Speaker 1: become somebody else. And this definitely isn't about looking in
- 1:27Speaker 1: the mirror and beating myself because I gained some weight back.
- 1:32Speaker 1: This is about getting back to taking care of myself.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And that's something I think a lot of us can
- 1:39Speaker 1: relate to. We start something with the best intentions. We
- 1:43Speaker 1: say to ourselves, I'm going to start eating better. I'm
- 1:47Speaker 1: going to start exercising. And I've got to start drinking
- 1:51Speaker 1: more water. Then you tell yourself, yourself. This time, I'm
- 1:58Speaker 1: going to stick with it. And then life happens. Work happens.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Stress happens. Depression happens. Anxiety happens. Which is exactly why
- 2:09Speaker 1: I gained the weight back. And suddenly that healthy routine
- 2:13Speaker 1: you started disappears. Maybe you order pizza. Maybe you grab
- 2:19Speaker 1: the fast food. Or maybe you eat something you know
- 2:23Speaker 1: you probably shouldn't. Then you tell yourself, well, I already
- 2:28Speaker 1: screwed up today, so I might as well start again Monday.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Sound familiar? I've done it probably more times than I
- 2:37Speaker 1: care to admit. And that's why today is so important.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Because I'm not waiting until the first of the month.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I'm not waiting for some magical date on the calendar.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Today is day uno, day one. And here's something I'm learning.
- 2:58Speaker 1: You don't have to be perfect to make progress. Because
- 3:03Speaker 1: sometimes we set these ridiculous expectations for ourselves. We think,
- 3:09Speaker 1: if we can follow the plan perfectly, there's no point
- 3:12Speaker 1: in doing it. But that's not reality. Real life is
- 3:17Speaker 1: not perfect. There are going to be days when I
- 3:21Speaker 1: eat something I probably shouldn't. There are going to be
- 3:24Speaker 1: days when I'm tired. There are going to be days
- 3:27Speaker 1: when I don't feel like exercising. And that's pretty much
- 3:31Speaker 1: every day. There are going to be days when I
- 3:35Speaker 1: look at a salad and think, yeah, that's not happening.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And that's okay. Because one bad meal doesn't erase all
- 3:44Speaker 1: the good choices. One bad day doesn't mean you failed.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And eating something unhealthy doesn't mean you have to throw
- 3:50Speaker 1: the entire day away. That's the mindset I'm trying to change.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Instead of saying, I blew it, I'm going to say, okay,
- 4:00Speaker 1: that happened. What's my next choice? That's the difference. Because
- 4:06Speaker 1: this isn't just about losing weight. It's about how I feel.
- 4:09Speaker 1: It's about having more energy. It's about feeling better when
- 4:12Speaker 1: I wake up in the morning. Most importantly, it's about
- 4:17Speaker 1: feeling more comfortable in my own body. It's about knowing
- 4:24Speaker 1: that I'm doing something for myself. Not because I'm told
- 4:27Speaker 1: I need to. Not because somebody made me feel bad
- 4:32Speaker 1: about my weight. Not because I want to feel better.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But most importantly, for my health. I have heart issues.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I have medical issues. And being overweight does not help.
- 4:52Speaker 1: So sometimes you have to just wake up and say, enough!
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm doing this for me. And let me tell you
- 5:01Speaker 1: something about day one. Day one is not glamorous. Nobody
- 5:06Speaker 1: wakes up on day one and suddenly has everything under control.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Day one is about making a decision. That's it. I'm
- 5:14Speaker 1: waking up today and saying, today, I'm going to try.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Maybe I don't know exactly where this journey is going
- 5:22Speaker 1: to take me. Maybe I don't know how much weight
- 5:24Speaker 1: I'll lose. Maybe I don't know how long it's going
- 5:27Speaker 1: to take. But I do know one thing. I can't
- 5:32Speaker 1: change yesterday. I can't undo the food I ate last week.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I can't go back and make different choices. But I
- 5:44Speaker 1: can make a better choice for today and tomorrow. I'll
- 5:48Speaker 1: worry about tomorrow when it gets here. And I want
- 5:53Speaker 1: to say something to anybody listening who's also trying to
- 5:56Speaker 1: lose weight. Don't beat yourself up. Seriously. If you gain weight,
- 6:03Speaker 1: don't hate yourself. If you fell off your diet, don't
- 6:06Speaker 1: call yourself a failure. If you've tried five times before,
- 6:10Speaker 1: that doesn't mean the sixth time won't work. You're allowed
- 6:13Speaker 1: to start over. And you can start over as many
- 6:18Speaker 1: times as you need to. There's no expiration date on
- 6:22Speaker 1: trying again. Think about it. You can have a bad
- 6:29Speaker 1: month and still have a great next month. You can
- 6:31Speaker 1: fall down and get back up. That's life. So, I'm
- 6:38Speaker 1: not going to obsess over the scale every single day
- 6:41Speaker 1: because that's the number that can mess with your head.
- 6:44Speaker 1: You can eat right for three days, exercise, drink your water,
- 6:47Speaker 1: feel like you're doing everything right, and then the scale
- 6:50Speaker 1: doesn't move and suddenly you feel like a failure. The
- 6:54Speaker 1: scale doesn't tell the entire story. The way I tell
- 7:02Speaker 1: is when my clothes start to fit differently. Or maybe
- 7:05Speaker 1: I have more energy. Maybe I'm making better food choices.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Maybe I'm proving to myself that I can keep a promise.
- 7:13Speaker 1: To myself. Those things matter. So for today. And going forward.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I'm keeping it simple. Eat better. Drink more water. Watch
- 7:28Speaker 1: the portions. That's important. But the most important thing. Is
- 7:35Speaker 1: don't quit. That's the goal. Not perfection. But consistency. Because
- 7:45Speaker 1: if I can make better choices most of the time,
- 7:48Speaker 1: that's progress. And if I screw up, I'll get back
- 7:53Speaker 1: on track. There's no excuses. I'm not beating myself up.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I'm just getting back on track. And that, ladies and gentlemen,
- 8:04Speaker 1: is what day one is really about. So I hope
- 8:09Speaker 1: you all have a wonderful day. Thank you for being here.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Thank you for listening. And stay on track. Eat right.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Eat healthy. Exercise. And be the best version of you.
- 8:27Speaker 1: For you, your family, and your loved ones. Until the
- 8:32Speaker 1: next episode, be the reason someone smiles. And make someone happy. Peace.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Thank you.
