- 0:07Speaker 1: This met podcast. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only

- 0:15Speaker 1: New Arthen. Today we're joined by Steve Ronella, Janice Pitelis Chester,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Floyd Seth Morris, Corey Culkins, Crin Schneider, and special guest
- 0:23Speaker 1: Dan Flores. Dan, you're an educated fella and very accomplished
- 0:27Speaker 1: in academia. But how do you feel about trivia? I
- 0:31Speaker 1: don't feel so good surrounded by you guys. I think
- 0:34Speaker 1: you guys are gonna be better at this than me.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Steve was just talking you up here before we started recording.
- 0:40Speaker 1: He thinks you have a chance. Well, he's a he's
- 0:42Speaker 1: an academic. Well, the guy gets paid to sit around read.
- 0:47Speaker 1: That helps. That puts you in a good position. Now,
- 0:51Speaker 1: if you're not familiar, this is a ten round quiz
- 0:53Speaker 1: show with questions from meat eaters four verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 0:58Speaker 1: and cooking Real quick, Yeah, go go ahead, you do
- 1:01Speaker 1: it for me. Uh. Dan is here because we are.
- 1:05Speaker 1: We just did an interview for The Meat Eater Podcast
- 1:08Speaker 1: about his new book, Wild New World, The Epic Story
- 1:13Speaker 1: of Animals and People in America, and Uh, it's available now,
- 1:18Speaker 1: let's go check it out. I love it? What like?
- 1:21Speaker 1: What time period is that focus on? Sixty millions? It
- 1:27Speaker 1: it actually begins with the asteroid impact sixty million years ago.
- 1:32Speaker 1: So so no dinosaurs in the book. No, no dinosaurs.
- 1:36Speaker 1: He dispatches a page or two and it ends yesterday.
- 1:45Speaker 1: That ends the day. He quit reading the right in
- 1:47Speaker 1: the book. I like it. I wish it was more dinosaurs,
- 1:49Speaker 1: but but I'm sold. I like it. I like it now.
- 1:52Speaker 1: There is a prize for the winner. Meat Eater will
- 1:54Speaker 1: donate five dollars to the conservation organization of the winners choosing.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Each week here on Trivia, we reveal a new stat
- 2:03Speaker 1: This week we are looking at the first question of
- 2:06Speaker 1: every game, which is always multiple choice. Leo Ennaking wrote
- 2:10Speaker 1: in to say that him and his best friend in
- 2:12Speaker 1: middle school decided that if they didn't know the answer
- 2:14Speaker 1: to a multiple choice question on a test, they'd answer CEE. Well,
- 2:18Speaker 1: if I was their teacher, they'd be at the top
- 2:20Speaker 1: of the class because of how often C is the
- 2:23Speaker 1: correct answer. Here's the breakdown, twenty percent of the time,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and Meat Eater trivia A is the right answer, B
- 2:30Speaker 1: is correct twenty one percent of the time, CE is
- 2:33Speaker 1: correct thirty four percent of the time and D is
- 2:35Speaker 1: correct one percent of the time. So, just like Leo
- 2:39Speaker 1: did in Middle, so you have a tendency to bury
- 2:41Speaker 1: the correct answer at the third at C thirty four
- 2:45Speaker 1: percent of the time. Now I would bet that that's
- 2:47Speaker 1: gonna wildly correct correct or maybe that's what you think.
- 2:55Speaker 1: What was the lowest one? It goes a percent by
- 2:59Speaker 1: one percent, see thirty four percent D. I could see
- 3:03Speaker 1: him doing this though, I could see him being like,
- 3:06Speaker 1: I'm not gonna see anymore. Then I could see him saying, well,
- 3:09Speaker 1: everybody's gonna know that, so I am going to use C.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And then I could see him saying, but everybody's gonna
- 3:14Speaker 1: know that that's right. I just liked so yeah. I
- 3:24Speaker 1: think now Leo was pointing out that I have gone
- 3:28Speaker 1: against randomness by making see the correct answer so often,
- 3:31Speaker 1: But I think that is more random than not because
- 3:33Speaker 1: of what you just said, Steve, it's it's going to
- 3:35Speaker 1: create some great tension with these multiple choice questions. But
- 3:39Speaker 1: if you're not sure going forward, answer CEE because there's
- 3:41Speaker 1: a better in one in three chance that that's the
- 3:44Speaker 1: right answer. Now we have some housekeeping to get to
- 3:47Speaker 1: you on Trivia. Before we get started. On a previous
- 3:49Speaker 1: episode of Trivia, I said that the bass Pro Pyramid
- 3:53Speaker 1: in Memphis was built in nineteen fifty four. About a
- 3:55Speaker 1: dozen listeners wrote in to let me know that it
- 3:57Speaker 1: was actually conceived in nineteen fifty four, construction started in
- 4:01Speaker 1: nineteen it was finished in Can you imagine trying to
- 4:08Speaker 1: build a period pyramid take some time. Also, in a
- 4:12Speaker 1: previous game, I asked what three states never had wolves
- 4:15Speaker 1: extirpated from them. The correct answer was Alaska, Minnesota, and Michigan.
- 4:20Speaker 1: A few listeners wrote in who took issue with this question.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Though First there was a group of listeners who said
- 4:26Speaker 1: North Carolina should be considered correct because of the red
- 4:28Speaker 1: wolf population there. To their credit, there are about twenty
- 4:32Speaker 1: wild red wolves that live there, but the source of
- 4:34Speaker 1: those animals was a breeding facility that rounded up the
- 4:37Speaker 1: last remaining red wolves in southeastern Texas in southwestern Louisiana.
- 4:42Speaker 1: In nineteen eighty, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service
- 4:45Speaker 1: actually declared red wolves extinct in the wild, so all
- 4:49Speaker 1: red wolves were extirpated from various states at some point,
- 4:52Speaker 1: despite their being an established population today. With that said,
- 4:56Speaker 1: North Carolina would not be a correct answer, okay, And
- 4:59Speaker 1: then there is a second group. There's a second group
- 5:03Speaker 1: of mediat or tribua listeners who found a loophole in
- 5:06Speaker 1: the question that might have some merit. Here's their argument.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Since Hawaii never had wolves, they couldn't technically be extrapated,
- 5:14Speaker 1: therefore making Hawaii a correct answer. Now, I wouldn't count it,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and I think that's outside of the spirit of the game.
- 5:20Speaker 1: But I'll leave it up to the room to decide.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Do you guys think Hawaii would be a correct answer?
- 5:25Speaker 1: If I was, I could see making some smartass play
- 5:31Speaker 1: like that and then really arguing it. But I just
- 5:35Speaker 1: put my I would put my energy toward what I
- 5:37Speaker 1: imagined to be the correct answer. But yeah, yeah, I
- 5:41Speaker 1: guess if you were to ask what states didn't have
- 5:44Speaker 1: wolves extra paid from them, technically Hawaii did not have
- 5:47Speaker 1: wolves extrapaid from them. But I don't know if it's
- 5:49Speaker 1: then not possible to be extrapated if it was never there.
- 5:54Speaker 1: About a dozen people wrote in about the Hawaii Yeah, yeah,
- 5:58Speaker 1: it was. It was a hot topic, and I'm sure
- 6:00Speaker 1: for every twelve that right party pants, Yeah, there's a
- 6:03Speaker 1: hundred that I just didn't want to bother if they
- 6:06Speaker 1: can't extra pate them because they were never there. You
- 6:09Speaker 1: think it wouldn't be. I don't know. I'm glad it
- 6:11Speaker 1: didn't come up and they're doing because i'd have been.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I'd have been stumped. You know that almost wind up
- 6:15Speaker 1: at the Supreme Court. I think you're right now. The
- 6:18Speaker 1: Shelby index for this game of trivia is a four,
- 6:21Speaker 1: so today's winner should get about eight correct answers. And
- 6:25Speaker 1: with that we are onto the game of trivia. Play
- 6:27Speaker 1: the drop fill. Look, I need to know what I
- 6:31Speaker 1: stay under. Win everything, how I'm saying, just tend to
- 6:36Speaker 1: win everything, suckers. Question one, the topic is fishing. How
- 6:50Speaker 1: far is a league? Is it three point five ft
- 6:54Speaker 1: three point five yards three point five kilometers or three
- 6:58Speaker 1: point five miles? How far is a league three point
- 7:05Speaker 1: five ft three point five yards, three point five kilometers
- 7:10Speaker 1: or three point five miles? You know this one? Steve
- 7:17Speaker 1: asked me in a minute. Okay, now, Dan, I don't
- 7:22Speaker 1: trust everyone in this room, so i'd hide your answers.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Lord man, I just gotta laid right out. That's kind
- 7:30Speaker 1: of well, he's still showing me, and he wrote up
- 7:32Speaker 1: super fast, so much sold that it's shaking my conference.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Again? We're looking for how
- 7:39Speaker 1: far is the league three point five ft three point
- 7:41Speaker 1: five yards three point five kilometers? Changing because he wrote
- 7:47Speaker 1: it cockily. He wrote it cockily and then showed it
- 7:50Speaker 1: to me. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 7:54Speaker 1: Steve saying three point five was that, say, Miles three
- 7:58Speaker 1: point three point five? Dan saying three point five kilometers,
- 8:02Speaker 1: Corey three point five miles, chest your three point five kilometers,
- 8:07Speaker 1: Kran three point five kilometers, Sat three point five yards,
- 8:11Speaker 1: and Janice three points. You think Jules Verns is twenty
- 8:15Speaker 1: thousand leagues under the sea was not that deep. That's
- 8:21Speaker 1: pretty deep. That's deep. Calculated at once, and I realized
- 8:25Speaker 1: that he was out the other side of the earth,
- 8:28Speaker 1: and halfway to the movie the correct answer, it's three
- 8:33Speaker 1: point five miles, Steve wrote, Miles saw Dan's answer, which
- 8:43Speaker 1: was written with confidence, and then changed it. And I
- 8:45Speaker 1: just calculated this because when I was reading about the
- 8:47Speaker 1: Coronado expedition, everything was in damn leagues and I had
- 8:50Speaker 1: to go look it up. That's why you gotta go
- 8:52Speaker 1: with your guts, Steve, A league is three point five
- 9:00Speaker 1: miles or three nautical miles. Here's why this measurement is
- 9:04Speaker 1: confusing to people in the book twenty leagues under I
- 9:08Speaker 1: should be able to go back to what I had,
- 9:10Speaker 1: because you should be allowed to cheat, you know what
- 9:14Speaker 1: I mean? It's right and like I cheated, like I shouldn't.
- 9:17Speaker 1: That should be allowed. Yeah, the last you've learned your lessons,
- 9:21Speaker 1: I want to go back to my pre cheat answers
- 9:24Speaker 1: the right thing to do. You might get just qualified.
- 9:30Speaker 1: The last time I saw a board, we had to
- 9:32Speaker 1: flip a coin for which. OK. Now, here's why this
- 9:38Speaker 1: measurement is confusing to people in the book twenty Leagues
- 9:41Speaker 1: under the Sea. It's referring to a journey spanning a
- 9:44Speaker 1: horizontal distance traveled under the surface of the water, not
- 9:48Speaker 1: a journey that went to a depth of twenty tho leagues.
- 9:51Speaker 1: The deepest part of the ocean is only about two leagues,
- 9:54Speaker 1: so if you were to travel twenty leagues deep, you
- 9:57Speaker 1: would come out the other side of the Earth and
- 9:59Speaker 1: make it about one third of the weight of the moon.
- 10:03Speaker 1: The book refers to how far they went once they
- 10:05Speaker 1: got underwater. Yes, because it was like it was like
- 10:08Speaker 1: ahead of its time. A submarine that they were hunting
- 10:12Speaker 1: this sea creature wish, which I think was like depicted
- 10:14Speaker 1: as a n our wall or something. It wasn't to
- 10:16Speaker 1: a depth of that far. It was underwater traveling twenty
- 10:20Speaker 1: thousand leagues horizontally. That that's good information, and that's why
- 10:25Speaker 1: it's confusing to people. And that's why I wouldn't blame
- 10:27Speaker 1: Seth for thinking it was feet or yards. With the
- 10:31Speaker 1: trivia question, I was reading a book last night and
- 10:35Speaker 1: you have it written on your hand, and I learned
- 10:37Speaker 1: a word, uh that I liked so much I wrote
- 10:40Speaker 1: it on my hand. You know when you have an
- 10:43Speaker 1: alluvial and alluvial deposition meaning like sediment from a river cheer?
- 10:50Speaker 1: Do you know what they call it when it's a
- 10:51Speaker 1: wind deposition? No? Yolian? Right, that's a hell of word.
- 10:58Speaker 1: That's good. What would be an example of sand dune? Okay?
- 11:01Speaker 1: Isn't it is an Eolian deposition? You didn't work that
- 11:05Speaker 1: into your vocabulary. Now, that's why I wrote it on
- 11:07Speaker 1: my hand. Question to the topic is cooking. This is
- 11:11Speaker 1: our work Sharp Listener Question of the Week, which was
- 11:14Speaker 1: won by Scott Waller for sending this great question. Scott
- 11:17Speaker 1: is going to get a work sharp care package that
- 11:20Speaker 1: includes three of our favorite knife sharpeners. If you want
- 11:23Speaker 1: a chance to win the listener Question of the Week,
- 11:25Speaker 1: then send your question to Trivia at the meat eater
- 11:27Speaker 1: dot com. What Yiddish term describes the rendered fat from
- 11:33Speaker 1: geese and turkey? I also want to be sex because
- 11:36Speaker 1: I know that? Um hit it again describes the rendered
- 11:42Speaker 1: fat from geese and turkey. Now enlighten me, Steve, you
- 11:48Speaker 1: were hoping it would be the Yiddish term for sex.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I think I know what it is. My buddy, uses it? Are?
- 11:55Speaker 1: We gonna have to bleach everything with that? Again? What
- 12:05Speaker 1: Yiddish term describes the rendered fat? Like those dogs were?
- 12:09Speaker 1: Those dogs were stocking? That's good? The Yiddish term that
- 12:16Speaker 1: describes rendered fat from geese and turkey. I'm back in
- 12:20Speaker 1: the game, buddy. Does everybody have an answer? I'm back
- 12:23Speaker 1: in the game. Corey. You good? Chester sitting. If Dan
- 12:28Speaker 1: hadn't done what he did, I wouldn't be sitting right now.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I would be sitting on two right shoulder. Does that
- 12:39Speaker 1: surprise you that Steve would cheat like that? No? No,
- 12:47Speaker 1: so it didn't make sense. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 12:50Speaker 1: We have Steve saying schmaltz, Dan without an answer, Corp
- 12:53Speaker 1: without an answer, Chester, Yeah, I know, Seth, Seth down
- 12:59Speaker 1: the answer, Janna saying schmaltz. And I know spelling doesn't
- 13:05Speaker 1: kind of against you, but schmutz. The correct answer is schmaltz.
- 13:11Speaker 1: We'll give it to you. It's like schmuck but with
- 13:17Speaker 1: a well how how would have you said it? Did
- 13:21Speaker 1: you think it was schmoots or did you think it
- 13:23Speaker 1: was small smuts. We're not going to give it to you.
- 13:26Speaker 1: You're not going to give it. If there was an
- 13:28Speaker 1: el in there, but it was, I say, yeah, but
- 13:35Speaker 1: dot com and in article on the meat Eator dot com,
- 13:43Speaker 1: Daniel Pruitt tried turning a wild turkey sponge into schmaltz.
- 13:47Speaker 1: She was successful and described the end result is rich
- 13:50Speaker 1: in flavor in a good addition to turkey stock. For
- 13:53Speaker 1: more on that process, read her article called is a
- 13:56Speaker 1: turkey sponge edible? Question three the time I pick his predators?
- 14:01Speaker 1: What do you call a female coyote? Dan? This would
- 14:08Speaker 1: be the bone that I'm throwing to you. What do
- 14:11Speaker 1: you call female ko? Look over? Because he's she likes
- 14:15Speaker 1: to share his answers. Actually that's not that big a bone.
- 14:20Speaker 1: This didn't come up in all of your workings on coyotes.
- 14:25Speaker 1: What do you call a female kyote? A quick answer
- 14:28Speaker 1: from Steve. The rest of the room doesn't seem as confident, Seth,
- 14:32Speaker 1: I'm surprised you don't know this one. I don't know it,
- 14:35Speaker 1: but I'm surprised you don't. Man, I've never I've never
- 14:39Speaker 1: heard anyone call a female. I got to I wish
- 14:43Speaker 1: I could put two down. It's looking for one. Corey.
- 14:47Speaker 1: You seem confident you had an answer quick, maybe fair.
- 14:50Speaker 1: You know, if the game ever gets real stale, it
- 14:53Speaker 1: might be an interesting thing to add in that you
- 14:55Speaker 1: could uh get half points by putting too things down.
- 15:01Speaker 1: M hm, But what if you get the second one wrong.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I don't know what I'm saying. Let's say you asked
- 15:07Speaker 1: for a thing like you're asking for answer, and I'm like,
- 15:10Speaker 1: I know it's either Let's say the answer looking for
- 15:13Speaker 1: is A, and I know it's either A or B,
- 15:15Speaker 1: and I can't decide. I could go for a half
- 15:17Speaker 1: seat by putting A and B down. Okay, maybe that's
- 15:24Speaker 1: keep in mind. Does everybody have an answer for what
- 15:26Speaker 1: you call a female? Coyote. Jesse you ready, Dan, you
- 15:32Speaker 1: got one. I've got one, but it's just a wild guess.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying vixen,
- 15:37Speaker 1: Dan saying vixen, Corey saying bitch, sa Gran saying a Susie,
- 15:44Speaker 1: Seth sang a sound, and Janice saying a bitch same
- 15:47Speaker 1: thing as a fox. You have a correct answer in
- 15:49Speaker 1: the room, and it's bitch. Oh. It's common to call
- 15:54Speaker 1: a male coyote a dog or bore and a juvenile
- 15:58Speaker 1: coyote a pup. All their animals that use the bitch
- 16:00Speaker 1: moniker include domestic dogs, wolves, foxes, and otters. A bitch
- 16:07Speaker 1: because that must just box. This is your game, coy
- 16:14Speaker 1: How are you doing? Corey two for three until you
- 16:19Speaker 1: got that one? Yes. Question for the topic is archaeology.
- 16:24Speaker 1: This is a visual question. If you want to see
- 16:26Speaker 1: what the room is seeing, then go to Instagram and
- 16:28Speaker 1: check out at Spencer New Hearth. I'll make it my
- 16:31Speaker 1: most recent post. In my hand is an ancient tool
- 16:36Speaker 1: that shares its name with a Star Wars character. What
- 16:40Speaker 1: is this tool? In my hand? Is an ancient tool
- 16:45Speaker 1: that we're now passing around? And this tool shares its
- 16:49Speaker 1: name with a Star Wars character. What is this tool?
- 16:53Speaker 1: What is the tools name? What is the tools? And
- 16:56Speaker 1: find that I'll explain in the in the follow up
- 17:00Speaker 1: factor that could be used for a lot of things
- 17:02Speaker 1: having that Star Wars character. I have a couple of those.
- 17:08Speaker 1: You have one to what part of that chester? Really?
- 17:12Speaker 1: What part of the country they come from? Montana, New
- 17:15Speaker 1: Mexico and South America? Beautiful I bought I bought one
- 17:21Speaker 1: at a New Mexico curio shop and then a guy
- 17:25Speaker 1: in South America who was like Amerindian native South American
- 17:30Speaker 1: gave it to me and said it was from the
- 17:32Speaker 1: ancient ones. One more time. Here, this is an ancient
- 17:37Speaker 1: tutor that shares its name with a Star Wars character.
- 17:41Speaker 1: What is the tool? That is an impressive specimen? Man?
- 17:45Speaker 1: How big are yours? Six? That size? Yeah? They're like that? Right?
- 17:52Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Does anybody know that? Stevie
- 17:56Speaker 1: a big Star Wars, a big Star Wars fan, and
- 17:58Speaker 1: I'm a big Artifact fan. Are you the Star Wars
- 18:00Speaker 1: saying Okay, does anybody else know this? Kid? You know?
- 18:04Speaker 1: Can you give me maybe you threw me off with
- 18:07Speaker 1: Star Wars character that's the part that I can't. I
- 18:11Speaker 1: used to have the guy. Oh and well, Steves shared
- 18:16Speaker 1: that it's a male Star Wars character. It's a princess Leiah.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Steve is fondling. I just don't know Star Wars character.
- 18:26Speaker 1: So you want very I was gonna tell you very
- 18:30Speaker 1: early memory of mine. I remember pulling up to the
- 18:32Speaker 1: Harbor Theater. Where's that at? In Michigan where I grew
- 18:36Speaker 1: up far away? It was like the closest theater could
- 18:38Speaker 1: go to his Harbor Theater. I remember pulling up and saying,
- 18:41Speaker 1: that says the Empire strikes back, and my brother saying,
- 18:46Speaker 1: you can't read that. You just know what it says.
- 18:49Speaker 1: How's that little? And you don't think you could read it?
- 18:53Speaker 1: You think your brother? I had to memorize. Does everybody
- 18:56Speaker 1: have an answer as to what this tool is called?
- 19:00Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 19:03Speaker 1: a hammer head, Dance saying a mortar, Pastel Corey saying
- 19:09Speaker 1: Kenobi jest, you're saying, what's that? Stay chester a Yoda
- 19:14Speaker 1: saying that's saying a skywalker, Janice saying a hammer Nobody
- 19:20Speaker 1: got it right. The correct answer is mall a mall Darth,
- 19:26Speaker 1: Mall Darth. I'm not talking about those Star Wars. I'm
- 19:30Speaker 1: talking about the old the first ones that came out,
- 19:32Speaker 1: and there's no character hammer. No, you had that crazy
- 19:37Speaker 1: head a mall. Now, this mall was found by my
- 19:43Speaker 1: father in law and one of his cattle pastures in
- 19:45Speaker 1: South Dakota. A study from the University of South Dakota
- 19:48Speaker 1: gathered data from one hundred malls randomly selected from a
- 19:52Speaker 1: museum's collection. They found that the average mall weight was
- 19:55Speaker 1: five pounds. This one, my father in law found is
- 19:58Speaker 1: nearly eight pounds, making it an except only large mall.
- 20:01Speaker 1: These were multi use tools that archaeologists speculate we're used
- 20:05Speaker 1: to dispatch wounded bison by smashing their skull crushed animal
- 20:09Speaker 1: bones together, merrow, pulverize acorns to make flower, and tether horses.
- 20:14Speaker 1: To Holmes and Steve, I know you're probably googling it
- 20:16Speaker 1: right now. There's a character in the Cantina who does
- 20:19Speaker 1: have like a head. I know you're dalking about. But
- 20:21Speaker 1: his name is not Hammerhead. You know, his name is
- 20:24Speaker 1: more Nawnden. Do you see that's news to me. He's
- 20:30Speaker 1: got a head like a hammer. This is the worst
- 20:34Speaker 1: game I've ever I think it's dance here shook me up,
- 20:37Speaker 1: making me nervous. But I haven't gotten one right yet.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Does mall sound familiar to you? Though? Like when I
- 20:42Speaker 1: hear Star Wars, I think the original ones that came
- 20:44Speaker 1: out Darth Maul guy who gets chopped in half by
- 20:48Speaker 1: want in the in the Phantom Menace that falls down
- 20:50Speaker 1: a big hole. Isn't just short Darth Vader with his
- 20:55Speaker 1: helmet off? Oh no, it was the whole different character. Okay, yeah,
- 20:59Speaker 1: I remember him on Pepsi cans as a kid. That's
- 21:01Speaker 1: the only thing he's got that red and black painted face,
- 21:04Speaker 1: like the spikes on it. I don't I don't think
- 21:07Speaker 1: they should even have come out with those wos. Now,
- 21:10Speaker 1: what do you think, like when you look at that tool,
- 21:13Speaker 1: what do you imagine folks using that for smash and ship?
- 21:16Speaker 1: But it was but this would lend me. I would
- 21:18Speaker 1: look at it and I'd have to ask Matt and Aaron.
- 21:21Speaker 1: I would look at this and think that it had
- 21:23Speaker 1: been halted. What do you mean like it had been
- 21:27Speaker 1: half that on a fork stick? Yeah? They think when
- 21:32Speaker 1: you see ones that heavy, you also see like drawings
- 21:34Speaker 1: where they would you put in their hands and like
- 21:36Speaker 1: tie leather around their hands so that they wouldn't lose
- 21:38Speaker 1: their grip and they can smash whatever they were doing. Yeah,
- 21:41Speaker 1: I would have pictured that being like from that that's
- 21:43Speaker 1: braided in there in order to hafted. But then if
- 21:45Speaker 1: you put that on us on a handle, that's a
- 21:49Speaker 1: hell of an implement. Eight pounds, it's a lot to
- 21:51Speaker 1: swing around. It's beautiful. Question five, the topic is conservation.
- 21:57Speaker 1: This act great question comes to us be a brandon
- 22:00Speaker 1: in in. If you have a question you think is
- 22:01Speaker 1: right for meat Eat Trivia, you can send it to
- 22:03Speaker 1: trivia at the meat eat dot com. What is the
- 22:06Speaker 1: name of the misshapen proteins that cause chronic wasting disease?
- 22:13Speaker 1: What is the name of the misshapen proteins that cause
- 22:17Speaker 1: chronic wasting disease? And we will get a scoreboard update
- 22:20Speaker 1: from Phil after this. A confidence Steve, seems like most
- 22:24Speaker 1: of the room is pretty confident on this one. I've
- 22:28Speaker 1: never seen that look that's on Krim's face before because
- 22:32Speaker 1: she knows it or doesn't know it, because I never
- 22:35Speaker 1: get anything. Does everybody have an answer? Corey m on
- 22:42Speaker 1: a blank What is the name of the misshapen proteins
- 22:46Speaker 1: that cause chronic wasting disease. Chess, you know this one.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I should, but I don't think so. I'm doing real
- 22:55Speaker 1: bad this round. Okay, we'll get a scoreboard update after this. Corey,
- 23:01Speaker 1: write down an answer. Sure, go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 23:05Speaker 1: We have Steve saying pre on, Dan saying pre on,
- 23:09Speaker 1: Corey saying pre on, Chester saying without an answer, Karan,
- 23:14Speaker 1: Seth and Janice all saying preon. They got it. The
- 23:17Speaker 1: correct answer is pre pulled black one out of the back.
- 23:20Speaker 1: The c w D Research and Management Act has a
- 23:23Speaker 1: chance to be passed this year. If that happens, it
- 23:25Speaker 1: will authorize seventy million dollars to fund c w D
- 23:28Speaker 1: research and management. If you want to help get this
- 23:30Speaker 1: bill over the finish line, then go to the meat
- 23:32Speaker 1: eater dot com and read It's time to get the
- 23:35Speaker 1: c w D Bill done by Charlie Bower. It'll explain
- 23:38Speaker 1: what the bill is and how you can and who
- 23:41Speaker 1: you can contact to show your support. Phil, we're halfway
- 23:44Speaker 1: through the game of trivia. Give us a scoreboard update.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Sure thing, Well, we have Chester zero points. It's fighting hard, though,
- 23:52Speaker 1: looks good doing it. We got Seve and Dan with
- 23:55Speaker 1: one point a piece. Stephen Ronella has two points along
- 23:58Speaker 1: with The Honest and Curran, and in first place its
- 24:02Speaker 1: Corey three points. Yeah, I was feeling defeated, easy Budy.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Question six, no disrespect. Question six. The topic is public lands.
- 24:28Speaker 1: What large gathering is held every September at the Black
- 24:32Speaker 1: Rock Desert Wilderness in Nevada. Steve writing and answered before
- 24:38Speaker 1: I even finish one. Okay, what large gathering is held
- 24:43Speaker 1: every September at the Black Rock Desert Wilderness in Nevada.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Seth and Yanni know this one. I don't know. I
- 24:53Speaker 1: know it's gathering on public lands? What large gathering is
- 25:03Speaker 1: held every September at the black Rock Desert Wilderness in Nevada.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Let's just keep but we've covered a lot of big
- 25:11Speaker 1: gatherings on the podcast in the last year on public
- 25:15Speaker 1: way and the cat. That's my disapproving noise. Seth is
- 25:19Speaker 1: maybe changing, Nope, stick all the changing your mind. No,
- 25:24Speaker 1: I didn't. I didn't change. I wrote it and put
- 25:26Speaker 1: it down. Does everybody have an answer about what that
- 25:28Speaker 1: large gathering is called? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 25:32Speaker 1: We have Steve saying burning man Dan saying burning Man,
- 25:36Speaker 1: Burning Man. Chester's saying, Mom, mandevus way more fun and
- 25:43Speaker 1: a lot of laughing at Chester's expense. That's where my
- 25:46Speaker 1: head man and burning Man hot. What was yours? And
- 25:55Speaker 1: what I started? Can you read that question one more time?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Here's the question. What large gathering is held every September
- 26:01Speaker 1: at the Black Rock Desert Wilderness in Nevada. The room
- 26:05Speaker 1: got it right. It is burning Yeah. The mountain moves around. Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I know. Probably what you're thinking is, how can they
- 26:11Speaker 1: do that in a in a wilderness? Is it in
- 26:13Speaker 1: the wilderness? Well, it's it's just that's like it's designation.
- 26:16Speaker 1: It's the Black Rock Desert Wilderness. The Black Rock Desert
- 26:19Speaker 1: Wilderness where Burning Man is held is owned by the
- 26:22Speaker 1: Bureau of Land Management. The event has taken place there
- 26:25Speaker 1: since nineteen ninety and we'll stay there for this foreseeable future.
- 26:29Speaker 1: In the BLM issued a ten year permit to Burning Man,
- 26:33Speaker 1: which costs about three million dollars annually. It's estimated that
- 26:37Speaker 1: eighty seven thousand people gathered for the burn in two,
- 26:41Speaker 1: setting a new attendance record seven thousand people. Has anybody
- 26:46Speaker 1: in this room attended? We have somebody in production. Who
- 26:50Speaker 1: helps organize a Montana burning man? But I don't know.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I know of this person. They haven't been yet themselves.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I don't think. I don't know. I love to I
- 27:00Speaker 1: would love to see it. Question seven, the topic is fishing.
- 27:04Speaker 1: This next right question comes to us via our very
- 27:06Speaker 1: own Brodie Henderson. If you have a question you think
- 27:09Speaker 1: is right, from meat Eat to Trivia, you can send
- 27:11Speaker 1: it to Trivia to Meatt dot com. Very closely, Let's
- 27:15Speaker 1: see what is the largest member of the freshwater sunfish family?
- 27:22Speaker 1: What is the largest member of the freshwater sunfish family.
- 27:29Speaker 1: That's a good question, Big Steve caught up just to guess.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I like how Corey looks right now? How's he look?
- 27:44Speaker 1: Not loving it? Okay? What is the largest member of
- 27:48Speaker 1: the sunfish family? Well, we're all thinking about this. No
- 27:51Speaker 1: one cares about this but me. I'm gonna go back
- 27:52Speaker 1: to Star Wars for half a second. Steve, I'm gonna
- 27:55Speaker 1: give you some credit because I think there's a scene
- 27:57Speaker 1: in e T the extraterrestrial Elliott is showing off his
- 28:01Speaker 1: Star Wars figures to eat and he pulls off that
- 28:05Speaker 1: alien we were just talking about it, says this is
- 28:06Speaker 1: hammer Head. Oh, is there? I think, I think, I
- 28:09Speaker 1: think so I just popped into my head. If it's
- 28:11Speaker 1: not in there, I'm gonna cut this out. But for
- 28:12Speaker 1: the three of you who are gonna send me an
- 28:14Speaker 1: angry DM, I'm just that was on e T. Does
- 28:19Speaker 1: that get me back to having my point? That's a
- 28:24Speaker 1: wildly deep cut that you're going. They're going for one
- 28:27Speaker 1: more time. Uh, what is the largest memory member of
- 28:31Speaker 1: the freshwater sunfish family? Corey doing more writing. Does everybody
- 28:34Speaker 1: have an answer? Sure, go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 28:38Speaker 1: We have Steve saying large mouth bass, Dan saying bream,
- 28:42Speaker 1: Corey saying crop you chest, you're saying large mouth bass,
- 28:45Speaker 1: Krin saying a skate, Seth saying blue gill, Janice saying
- 28:50Speaker 1: large mouth bass. We have a correct answer in the room.
- 28:53Speaker 1: It's large mouth bass. Boy. Sunfish family includes popular panfish
- 28:59Speaker 1: like blue guild, mean sunfish, and pumpkin seed, as well
- 29:02Speaker 1: as game fish like large mouth bass, small mouth bass,
- 29:05Speaker 1: and spotted bass. At just over twenty two pounds, the
- 29:09Speaker 1: world record large mouth is twice as heavy as the
- 29:13Speaker 1: world record smallmouth or world record spotted bass. Imagine a
- 29:17Speaker 1: twenty two pound large mouth bass just glutton nous, just
- 29:21Speaker 1: the bucket mouth on that thing big. It's always like
- 29:24Speaker 1: a little bit grotesque. When you see a really fat perch,
- 29:28Speaker 1: you're like, how does that thing swim? That's how a
- 29:30Speaker 1: giant bass like that looks makes you question like their
- 29:33Speaker 1: ability to probably put his lips around your head. Big
- 29:38Speaker 1: question eight. The topic is cooking. What day of the
- 29:42Speaker 1: week is Thanksgiving in Canada? M hmm? What day of
- 29:48Speaker 1: the week is Thanksgiving in Canada? I'm gonna do my
- 29:52Speaker 1: impression of Brody if he were here right now. Ready, yeah, Spencer,
- 29:56Speaker 1: what category is this question? Again? Cooking? Because it's one
- 30:01Speaker 1: of the biggest feast days of the year, whether you're
- 30:05Speaker 1: in USA or Canada. Got it? Okay, I'm just making
- 30:09Speaker 1: chance here, Dan, thank you Phil. What day of the
- 30:13Speaker 1: week is Thanksgiving in Canada? This is a cooking Dan
- 30:17Speaker 1: wants me to cheat. I hope this is like, hope,
- 30:20Speaker 1: this is a trick question. We'll see, yeah, we will say.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Everybody have an answer. Steve, how do you feel about
- 30:29Speaker 1: Dan's answer? I'm looking at you because I'm trying not
- 30:33Speaker 1: to look at everything you write, because he because I
- 30:35Speaker 1: made that mistake once already, trying to play a clean game.
- 30:39Speaker 1: What would be funny and dance if you wrote suck it? Steve,
- 30:44Speaker 1: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying Friday,
- 30:48Speaker 1: Dan saying Thursday, Corey saying Friday. Chest You're saying Thursday,
- 30:52Speaker 1: Karen saying Sunday saying Friday, Na saying Thursday Friday. Nobody
- 30:59Speaker 1: got it right. The correct answer is Monday is Monday?
- 31:04Speaker 1: What about an Elypius Thanksgiving? Since nineteen fifty seven, Thanksgiving
- 31:09Speaker 1: Day in Canada has been the second Monday. In October,
- 31:13Speaker 1: A two poles showed that, similar to America, the most
- 31:17Speaker 1: consumed foods on Thanksgiving Day in Canada are turkey stuffing,
- 31:21Speaker 1: mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and oatmeal cookies. I'm
- 31:26Speaker 1: not too different from US. I think that game. That
- 31:29Speaker 1: question ranks up there with your l Dente question as
- 31:32Speaker 1: being so far afield you didn't like Al Dente. It's
- 31:38Speaker 1: it's like, well, it's not that I don't I like
- 31:41Speaker 1: El Dente apasts as much as next. I'm just saying
- 31:44Speaker 1: that question. I just don't understand what it's doing in
- 31:46Speaker 1: this show. What what will you be having on Thanksgiving
- 31:48Speaker 1: this year? You think whatever I make. Yeah, I'm sure
- 31:52Speaker 1: there will be some wild game involved. I think it's
- 31:54Speaker 1: going to think it's there we go. It's very much
- 31:56Speaker 1: tied in to our four verticals. Phil, we have two
- 31:59Speaker 1: questions left. Give us a scoreboard update. Yes, out of
- 32:03Speaker 1: the game with one point. It's Chester. Thanks for playing.
- 32:08Speaker 1: We got Seth and Dan with two points apiece, Karin
- 32:12Speaker 1: with three, and Steve, Joannis and Corey are tied in
- 32:15Speaker 1: first place with four points four points. Question question nine,
- 32:24Speaker 1: the topic is biology. The s next great question comes
- 32:27Speaker 1: to is via Robert Robinson. If you have a question
- 32:29Speaker 1: you think is right for Meat Eater Trivia, you can
- 32:31Speaker 1: send it to trivia at the meat eater dot com.
- 32:34Speaker 1: What color are animals that have these zan throw chrowism condition?
- 32:39Speaker 1: M hmm, what color are animals that have these zanthrow
- 32:44Speaker 1: chrowism condition? Nobody knew this one right off the bat.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Dan seems to have the quickest answer in the room
- 32:54Speaker 1: is all I gotta say, because this is a hard
- 32:59Speaker 1: ass trivia, Can you give me the name again? Zan
- 33:01Speaker 1: throw crow wism x A and th h O C
- 33:06Speaker 1: h R O I S M zan throw crowism. What
- 33:12Speaker 1: color are animals then have zan throw crowism, Johnny, how
- 33:17Speaker 1: you feeling about this? It's you know, how many colors
- 33:21Speaker 1: are there in the rainbow? That one out of that
- 33:25Speaker 1: I would I would go with the If I could
- 33:29Speaker 1: do the haves, the thing I was recommended, I'd go
- 33:31Speaker 1: for haves. The'se right now. They'd be like when you're
- 33:33Speaker 1: playing football and you try to kick a field goal?
- 33:36Speaker 1: Did Dan write an answer down quick? He did? He did,
- 33:38Speaker 1: but he's about to race it. Does everybody have an answer? Zan?
- 33:45Speaker 1: Throw crow wism? I'm about to have one? Okay, change
- 33:50Speaker 1: my ship up. I feel like let me know when
- 33:52Speaker 1: you're ready. I'm ready. I'm not changing. Go ahead and
- 33:56Speaker 1: reveal your answers. We have Steve saying white and saying black,
- 34:01Speaker 1: Corey saying white, Chester saying white, Krin saying black, Seth
- 34:05Speaker 1: saying red, Janice saying red. Nobody got it is yellow
- 34:11Speaker 1: or orange xanthrow crow is um is a condition where
- 34:16Speaker 1: all skin pigments other than yellow and orange disappear. It's
- 34:20Speaker 1: been observed in woodpeckers, cardinals, horn toads, python's, large mouth bass,
- 34:25Speaker 1: and most recently, a croppy that was caught in Missouri
- 34:28Speaker 1: that made national news. It's considered one of the rarest
- 34:31Speaker 1: color based mutations in the world. That's why nobody knew.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Question ten, Nothing on the scoreboard has changed. But who
- 34:38Speaker 1: do we have left in it? Phil Uh? Now it's
- 34:41Speaker 1: down to Corey, Janice, Steve and Karna. We need Karn
- 34:48Speaker 1: to get it right, the rest of the room to
- 34:50Speaker 1: get it wrong. Corey looking for his first victory as well.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Question ten, the topic is hunting makes me a rub
- 35:00Speaker 1: my eyes? Which Migration Flyway harvests the most ducks and
- 35:05Speaker 1: has the most hunters? Which Migration Flyway harvest the most
- 35:12Speaker 1: ducks and has the most hunters? It has both of
- 35:17Speaker 1: those distinctions most duck hunters or most hunters most duck hunters,
- 35:25Speaker 1: and it harvests the most ducks. Mm hmm, Danny, give up?
- 35:34Speaker 1: I think I was eliminated already. Think you playing? Steve?
- 35:40Speaker 1: How you feel about this? I'm ninety percent sure correct,
- 35:46Speaker 1: most duck hunters and most ducks killed. Corey? How you
- 35:48Speaker 1: feel about this? Not good? If I got it wrong?
- 35:53Speaker 1: I know what was right? Okay, a lot of men.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Does everybody have any is right? Go ahead and reveal
- 36:02Speaker 1: your answers and we have Steve saying Mississippi. Corey saying Central, Mississippi,
- 36:07Speaker 1: change Kran saying Pacific, Seth saying Central, and Janice saying Mississippi.
- 36:15Speaker 1: The correct answer is Mississippi, making Janice and Steve tied
- 36:21Speaker 1: for first place. I think my pen, just like Corey's pen,
- 36:26Speaker 1: got out down Mississippi and rode down Central. This is
- 36:30Speaker 1: according to the US Fish and Wildlife Services one Waterfowler Report.
- 36:34Speaker 1: The Mississippi Flyway is responsible for four point four million
- 36:38Speaker 1: harvested ducks, which is of all ducks harvested in America.
- 36:43Speaker 1: It also has three eighty thousand hunters, which is forty
- 36:46Speaker 1: two of America's duck hunters. It's a good question. We
- 36:50Speaker 1: are going to overtime play the drop, Phil. I've done
- 36:59Speaker 1: my guys sense at all. First your lad you could
- 37:02Speaker 1: be second, you can be third, fourth out five, we
- 37:08Speaker 1: are down to Janice and Steve. The topic for the
- 37:10Speaker 1: tiebreaker question is conservation, and this will be a NU
- 37:14Speaker 1: miracle question. Whoever is closest to the correct answer will
- 37:18Speaker 1: be declared our winner. What year did the US Fish
- 37:22Speaker 1: and Wildlife Service band led shot for waterfowl hunting nationwide? Oh?
- 37:30Speaker 1: What year did the US Fish and Wildlife Service band
- 37:33Speaker 1: led shot for waterfowl hunting Nationwide. Steve wrote with such
- 37:38Speaker 1: confidence that it's almost as though he knows the answer.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Yanni has yet to come up with one. Steve, how
- 37:45Speaker 1: much did you change your answer? There? How many? By one? By?
- 37:49Speaker 1: One year? Y you think you know? I think a decade? Okay?
- 37:57Speaker 1: And and Steve, how how close do you think you are? Oh?
- 38:00Speaker 1: Within a year? Within two years? You guys both have
- 38:03Speaker 1: your answer. Oh, no, I want to change mine again.
- 38:05Speaker 1: One star oh Man keeps hamming in han, He's not
- 38:11Speaker 1: gonna change it. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 38:15Speaker 1: have Steve saying nineteen eighty one in Janice saying night
- 38:21Speaker 1: one of you is within three years of the correct
- 38:24Speaker 1: answer me? Does the room wanna take a gas at?
- 38:27Speaker 1: Who's right here? Steve? Well, because I started duck hunting.
- 38:31Speaker 1: I started duck hunting in uh in six and you
- 38:35Speaker 1: couldn't use and there's still people complaining about it. The
- 38:40Speaker 1: correct answer is what year did the US Fish and
- 38:47Speaker 1: Wildlife Service band lad shot for waterfowl hunting nationwide? O? Nationwide?
- 38:52Speaker 1: Do you think it was just about Michigan? But when
- 38:54Speaker 1: I started hunting at night when I was in Michigan,
- 38:56Speaker 1: and I started my first legal dark here was eighty
- 38:58Speaker 1: six and people were bitching about not be able to
- 39:00Speaker 1: use less. Maybe it was a statewide thing. State did
- 39:03Speaker 1: it before? Did that? Steve's not The question is just
- 39:07Speaker 1: about Michigan. My hand, like I just want to box
- 39:16Speaker 1: with That was a good game. That was a good game.
- 39:20Speaker 1: It was a top round of a good game. That Congratulations,
- 39:22Speaker 1: did you use some Shelby? Did you lose some confidence? Yanni?
- 39:27Speaker 1: On the eight that lose confidence like when Steve saw
- 39:31Speaker 1: When you saw Steve was one where you're like, oh,
- 39:33Speaker 1: I'm way off. No, Like I said, I thought i'd
- 39:35Speaker 1: be within a decade. Man, I was bouncing all around.
- 39:38Speaker 1: But I bounced from eighty three to eighty two to
- 39:40Speaker 1: eighty one. I just kept getting worse. What happens next
- 39:44Speaker 1: is Yanni gets to choose where a five dollar donation goes.
- 39:47Speaker 1: So what's it gonna be, Yanni? It's been so long
- 39:50Speaker 1: since I've had a win, I can't remember who I
- 39:52Speaker 1: like to support. Congratulations John, You're just to remind you
- 39:55Speaker 1: you're always all over the damn place for his donations. Yeah,
- 39:59Speaker 1: I think you gave something with kids organization wants to
- 40:01Speaker 1: uh a bighorn sheep. Yeah, yeah, the big sheep fighting
- 40:07Speaker 1: for their life over there in Veil, Colorado. Um, let's
- 40:12Speaker 1: give it to them again. Just as an update, Well,
- 40:15Speaker 1: I don't really have an update, but just so you
- 40:16Speaker 1: all know, there's a little chunk of private land that
- 40:20Speaker 1: Veil Resorts wants to develop and put employee housing on it.
- 40:24Speaker 1: It just so happens to be that it's like the
- 40:27Speaker 1: remnants of the winter range of the endemic bighorn sheep
- 40:33Speaker 1: heard in the Gore Range, which is just north of
- 40:36Speaker 1: Veil Resorts, um where I used to live there in
- 40:39Speaker 1: Eagle County, And uh, it would be great if they
- 40:42Speaker 1: didn't build their employee housing there. So what needs to
- 40:45Speaker 1: happen for that not to happen? They just need to
- 40:47Speaker 1: decide to The town is already offered to buy the
- 40:52Speaker 1: property from them, and they're trying to come up with
- 40:54Speaker 1: some just insane astronomical amount, like you know, so the
- 40:58Speaker 1: town can't afford it, So your money go to There's
- 41:01Speaker 1: a uh like a Veil Big Horn uh initiative or
- 41:05Speaker 1: something like that, but just a group is trying to
