- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday today.
- 0:15It's the 28th of April and it's lovely to have your company.
- 0:18Thank you for inviting me into your day.
- 0:20No matter what you are up to, no matter where I find you, it is
- 0:25so good that you and I are just going to stop for a moment and
- 0:28we are going to take this time to read some of God's Word.
- 0:33And as we are reading this fascinating book of Joshua, you
- 0:36might be thinking, oh, it's all this giving out of land.
- 0:40How does this apply to me? And why do they bother telling
- 0:42us all these details? If you remember, all the way
- 0:46back in the book of Genesis is where God promises to Abraham
- 0:52that he is going to give this land to Abraham descendants who
- 0:56didn't even exist at that time. And so here we have this book of
- 1:00Joshua, and the author writes it so clearly so that we would know
- 1:05that God keeps his promises and that if God has promised this
- 1:10land, then all of this land will be delivered exactly as it was
- 1:15intended to God's people, the Israelites.
- 1:18So that is why the author goes to such great lengths to
- 1:21describe exactly how this land is gathered, is conquered, is
- 1:25retrieved for the people, and is distributed amongst those 12
- 1:29tribes. So, Holy Spirit, help us to see
- 1:33you in the midst of these readings.
- 1:34May we just encounter you and your character, your
- 1:39faithfulness, and your love for us.
- 1:43All right, friends, Are you ready?
- 1:45Me too. Let's do it.
- 1:46Let's read together Joshua chapter 13.
- 1:58When Joshua was an old man, the Lord said to him, You are
- 2:02growing old, and much land remains to be conquered.
- 2:06This is the territory that remains all the regions of the
- 2:10Philistines and the Gesherites and the larger territory of the
- 2:14Canaanites, extending from the stream of Shahor on the border
- 2:18of Egypt northward to the boundary of Ekron.
- 2:21It includes the territory of the five Philistine rulers of Gaza,
- 2:25Ashdod, Eshkolon, Gath and Ekron.
- 2:29The land of the Avites in the South also remains to be
- 2:33conquered. In the north, the following area
- 2:35has yet to be conquered. All the land of the Canaanites,
- 2:39including Mira, which belongs to the Sidonians, stretching
- 2:43northwards to AFEC on the border of the Amorites.
- 2:47The land of the Gebelites and all of the Lebanon mountain area
- 2:50to the east from Balghad below Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath and
- 2:57all the Hill Country from Lebanon to Misrafoth Maim,
- 3:00including all the land of the Sidonians.
- 3:03I myself will drive these people out of the land ahead of the
- 3:07Israelites. So be sure to give this land to
- 3:09Israel as a special possession, just as I have commanded you.
- 3:14Include all this territory as Israel's possession when you
- 3:18divide this land among the 9 tribes and the half tribe of
- 3:22Manasa. Half the tribe of Manasa and the
- 3:27tribes of Reuben and Gad had already received their grants of
- 3:30land on the east side of the Jordan, for Moses, the servant
- 3:33of the Lord, had previously assigned this land to them.
- 3:37Their territory extended from Arroa on the edge of the Arnon
- 3:41Gorge, including the town in the middle of the gorge, to the
- 3:44plain beyond Medibah as far as Dibon.
- 3:47It also included all the towns of King Sahon of the Amorites,
- 3:52who had reigned in Heshbon, and extended as far as the borders
- 3:55of Ammon. It included Gilead, the
- 3:58territory of the kingdoms of Gesha and Marka, all of Mount
- 4:02Hermon, all of Bashan as far as Salaca, and all the territory of
- 4:07King Ogg of Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrae.
- 4:12King Ogg was the last of the Raphaelites, for Moses had
- 4:15attacked them and driven them out.
- 4:17But the Israelites failed to drive out the people of Gesha
- 4:21and Marka, so they continue to live among the Israelites to
- 4:25this day. Moses did not assign any
- 4:28allotment of land to the tribe of Levi.
- 4:30Instead, as the Lord had promised them, their allotment
- 4:34came from the offerings burned on the altar to the Lord the God
- 4:38of Israel. Moses had assigned the following
- 4:41area to the clans of the tribe of Reuben.
- 4:44Their territory extended from Arroa on the edge of the Arnong
- 4:48Gorge, including the town in the middle of the gorge, to the
- 4:51plain beyond Matabah. It included Heshbon and the
- 4:55other towns on the plain. Dibon BA Mothbaal, Bethbalmion,
- 5:01Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mepath, Kiriathium, Sibma, Jarath, Shaha
- 5:09on the hill above the valley, Beth Poah, the slopes of Pisgah,
- 5:13and Beth Jeshimoth. The land of Reuben also included
- 5:17all the towns of the plain and the entire Kingdom of Cyhon.
- 5:21Cyhon was the Amorite king who had reigned in Heshbon and was
- 5:25killed by Moses along with the leaders of MIDI and Evai
- 5:29Reckham, Zor H and Reba Princess living in the region who were
- 5:35allied with Cyhon. The Israelites had also killed
- 5:38Balaam, son of Beor, who used magic to tell the future.
- 5:43The Jordan River marked the western boundary for the Tribe
- 5:46of Reuben. The towns and their surrounding
- 5:48villages in this area were given as a homeland to the clans of
- 5:53the Tribe of Reuben. Moses had assigned the following
- 5:56areas to the clans of the Tribe of Gad.
- 6:00Their territory included Jaiza, all the towns of Gilead, and
- 6:03half of the land of Ammon as far as the town of Arroa, just West
- 6:08of Rabah. It extended from Heshbon to
- 6:11Ramoth, Mizpah and Baitonum, and from Maha Name to the territory
- 6:17of Lo Debar. In the valley were Beth Haram,
- 6:21Beth Nimra, Sukoth, Zaphon, and the rest of the Kingdom of King
- 6:26Saihon of Heshbon. The western boundary ran along
- 6:30the Jordan River, extending as far north as the tip of the Sea
- 6:34of Galilee, and then turned eastward.
- 6:37The towns and their surrounding villages in this area were given
- 6:41as a homeland to the clans of the tribe of Gad.
- 6:46Moses had assigned the following area to the clans of the half
- 6:49tribe of Manasseh. Their territory extended from
- 6:53Maha name, including all of Bashan, all the former Kingdom
- 6:57of King Ogg, and the 60 towns of Jaya and Bashan.
- 7:01It also included half of Gilead and King Ogg's royal cities of
- 7:05Ashtaroth and Edrey. All this was given to the clans
- 7:09of the descendants of Maker, who was Manasa's son.
- 7:13These are the allotments Moses had made while he was on the
- 7:16plains of Moab across the Jordan River east of Jericho.
- 7:20But Moses gave no allotment to the land of the tribe of Levi,
- 7:25for the Lord, the God of Israel, had promised that he himself
- 7:29would be their allotment. My Lord, you know our needs, and
- 7:43You know exactly what it is that we need to make it through the
- 7:46day, to make it through the generation, and to make it
- 7:49through this stage of history. And Lord, we just thank You that
- 7:54you know us and You provide for us.
- 7:58And Lord, thank you for giving us today Our Daily Bread as we
- 8:02go about our lives facing the challenges and the needs and the
- 8:06shortages and the abundance. And there you walk with us with
- 8:11that intimate knowledge of our lives and our needs.
- 8:15Thank you for blessing us so graciously.
- 8:19And Lord, as we have areas in a life where we are in need and we
- 8:23come to you with those needs. Lord, I pray that we are also
- 8:27reminded of all the areas that we have of abundance in our life
- 8:32where you have provided the equivalent of land for our
- 8:36families to grow and to feed themselves and be safe.
- 8:42Our Lord, you are a good God who provides, and we thank you and
- 8:47we thank you most of all for providing a way for us to come
- 8:51to you in your glory and perfection through what Jesus
- 8:55has won for us. So we pray all of this in His
- 8:58perfect name, Amen.
