- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the second episode Speak with Brask. Our
- 0:05Speaker 1: next guests are Debs and Mila, living and working together
- 0:09Speaker 1: as a couple. I hope you will listen to our
- 0:13Speaker 1: podcast and shared with your friends. Thank you so much,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Thanks so much for taking your time. Of course, we're
- 0:20Speaker 1: in your house, in your studio in Los Angeles. Can
- 0:23Speaker 1: you just introduce yourself.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Well, our names are Daves Mila. I'm Mila, and that's Dads.
- 0:30Speaker 1: That's me and you live together, work together, and a
- 0:34Speaker 1: complem h.
- 0:35Speaker 3: We've been married for we've been together for twenty years.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Congress. That's amazing, thank you.
- 0:41Speaker 3: And we're making paintings together for twenty years.
- 0:44Speaker 2: We have. And then we met originally in Melbourne, Australia,
- 0:48Speaker 2: and we were at art school and first we became
- 0:51Speaker 2: friends and we really we had a lot of similarities
- 0:55Speaker 2: in music and different things that we liked. And then
- 1:00Speaker 2: you know, when we just started when we started dating,
- 1:05Speaker 2: we just started collaborating together pretty much straight away.
- 1:10Speaker 4: And then you moved to early Yeah.
- 1:12Speaker 5: A few years after that, in two thousand and nine,
- 1:14Speaker 5: we moved from Melbourne to Los Angeles.
- 1:18Speaker 1: And are doing a lot of mural as well and
- 1:21Speaker 1: paintings and different collapse together with different brands.
- 1:25Speaker 5: Yeah, that kind of makes the bulk of what we do,
- 1:28Speaker 5: like paintings for exhibitions. We love to create installations, you know,
- 1:36Speaker 5: environmental installation, you know, like experience immersive installations, and then
- 1:43Speaker 5: like murals and collaborations and stuff with brands, all different.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Kinds of stuff.
- 1:48Speaker 2: We're very lucky that in our.
- 1:50Speaker 3: We make ceramics.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 2: In our artwork, we have like a lot of different
- 1:55Speaker 2: mediums and it's really fun for us because we have
- 1:57Speaker 2: like a lot of different ideas and so we can
- 2:00Speaker 2: we can put that all of those different ideas into
- 2:05Speaker 2: like different mediums that we like to use.
- 2:09Speaker 4: And how did the ceramic came up?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Well, that kind of started maybe back in like twenty eighteen.
- 2:16Speaker 2: We were having an exhibition and we wanted to make
- 2:18Speaker 2: some ceramics, and so we asked a really good friend
- 2:22Speaker 2: of ours who he's an Aussie guy, but he moved
- 2:26Speaker 2: to Antwerp around the same time we moved here, and
- 2:30Speaker 2: he's a ceramic he's a ceramic teacher and he's actually
- 2:34Speaker 2: a really incredible graffiti writer as well, named New two.
- 2:38Speaker 2: And so he came and stayed with us for a
- 2:41Speaker 2: month and taught us how to hand.
- 2:43Speaker 4: What else we hit him.
- 2:44Speaker 5: We were like, you know, we want to make some
- 2:46Speaker 5: ceramics for this exhibition. Do you want to come stay
- 2:49Speaker 5: with us for a month in la and just give
- 2:52Speaker 5: us a crash course in ceramics, you know, handbuilding specifically.
- 2:58Speaker 5: And so he came over and just stay with us
- 3:00Speaker 5: for close to a month, and we converted the whole
- 3:04Speaker 5: studio into like a ceramic Like we took all the
- 3:08Speaker 5: paintings down and we kind of covered everything up and
- 3:10Speaker 5: we just like he just taught us a lot about it,
- 3:13Speaker 5: and we loved it, and we made.
- 3:14Speaker 3: This series of ceramics and then we kind of.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Put it aside for a second. Even though we love
- 3:21Speaker 5: doing that, we kind of put it and we exhibited
- 3:23Speaker 5: those in the show we had in twenty eighteen, and
- 3:25Speaker 5: then we kind of like put it on hold for
- 3:27Speaker 5: a couple of years and then kind of came back
- 3:30Speaker 5: to it, and then.
- 3:31Speaker 2: It was kind of during the pandemic. Well like at
- 3:35Speaker 2: the tail end of the pandemic, we were hanging out
- 3:37Speaker 2: with our friends Seth and Lauren, and they're like really
- 3:41Speaker 2: good ceramic ceramicists and they make a lot of pottery
- 3:46Speaker 2: and they're really into glazers and they predominantly throw on
- 3:51Speaker 2: a wheel. And it's kind of cool because they have
- 3:54Speaker 2: a really beautiful studio and they love hanging out with
- 3:58Speaker 2: people in their studio. So we started going there and
- 4:01Speaker 2: hanging out with them, like over the weekend, and we
- 4:05Speaker 2: started throwing a little bit, but mostly we would take
- 4:09Speaker 2: things that we would hand build and then like kind
- 4:12Speaker 2: of pick their brains about like glazers and stuff, and
- 4:15Speaker 2: we were using their glazers and so then that kind of.
- 4:18Speaker 5: Like I think we just got inspired again and really
- 4:21Speaker 5: started to get back into it a lot. And then,
- 4:24Speaker 5: you know, it's hard to do that and make paintings
- 4:26Speaker 5: at the same time, so we kind of like like
- 4:28Speaker 5: we kind of like put aside a couple of months,
- 4:30Speaker 5: do a bunch of stuff with clay, put that aside,
- 4:33Speaker 5: let it dry, go back to paint you know, like
- 4:35Speaker 5: we kind of like go back and forth.
- 4:37Speaker 2: It's cool. It's kind of nice because I think that
- 4:39Speaker 2: the ceramics are a three D version of what our
- 4:43Speaker 2: paintings look like, you know, So it's kind of like
- 4:46Speaker 2: back to like that whole thing of like like having
- 4:49Speaker 2: all these mediums to express ourselves and our creativity. I
- 4:54Speaker 2: feel like, it's cool that we can now see what
- 4:57Speaker 2: our pieces look like, all like, you know, three sixty cool.
- 5:04Speaker 4: It makes totally sense.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And you go on holiday tomorrow and when you get back,
- 5:09Speaker 1: you just told me you're going to do seven murals.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Isn't that correct?
- 5:13Speaker 5: Yeah, well we're going to do the first five yeap,
- 5:16Speaker 5: and then we'll take a small break and then we'll
- 5:19Speaker 5: do the other two.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yes, but it's it's in San Diego, and some of
- 5:25Speaker 2: the murals are the walls are really big, like maybe
- 5:29Speaker 2: nine or eight or nine stories tallow, and so it's
- 5:35Speaker 2: gonna be it's gonna be a total, it'll be a slog.
- 5:39Speaker 3: We're it's gonna be in the you know, doing that
- 5:42Speaker 3: for a month.
- 5:43Speaker 2: It'll be fun though, because we have.
- 5:44Speaker 5: It'll be fun and then it won't be, and then
- 5:47Speaker 5: it will be and then it will be again, and
- 5:48Speaker 5: then it'll be really tiring, and then it'll be fun again.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yeah, but you do all the murals yourself, isn't that correct? Still,
- 5:55Speaker 1: you don't have anybody to help.
- 5:56Speaker 5: You this one. This one we're gonna have to have.
- 6:00Speaker 5: We're gonna we've got a guy down in San Diego
- 6:02Speaker 5: who's going to come and help.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Us and feel in the colors.
- 6:05Speaker 3: It's just too even just much of it helped, like
- 6:08Speaker 3: go get stuff for like, it's just too these are
- 6:11Speaker 3: two there's too many of them and they're too big.
- 6:13Speaker 2: And also like and.
- 6:14Speaker 3: We're getting older.
- 6:16Speaker 5: We held every second, every second, we're all getting older
- 6:20Speaker 5: and it's getting harder and harder.
- 6:22Speaker 3: So it's going to have like a third person there.
- 6:24Speaker 3: But a lot of the time we do love just
- 6:26Speaker 3: to do.
- 6:27Speaker 5: We're in a weird situation, not a weird it's a
- 6:29Speaker 5: great situation, but it's also a strange situation where it
- 6:32Speaker 5: is the two of us making things together. And so
- 6:35Speaker 5: as much as we love having like it's cool to
- 6:38Speaker 5: have other people help you, obviously, things like this we
- 6:41Speaker 5: need to.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I remember when you were twenty nineteen, wasn't coming. You
- 6:47Speaker 1: were there for six or seven days and you kind
- 6:49Speaker 1: of spent every day from morning till the sun.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Went down on the lift to do the mural.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but I also think that's that you are murals
- 6:58Speaker 1: so special because you can see both of you in them,
- 7:00Speaker 1: and it's some you haven't just been handling our skits
- 7:03Speaker 1: to somebody. You're there, you do all the colors. Yeah,
- 7:07Speaker 1: so your control about all the details and the mural
- 7:10Speaker 1: is the skits and the mural is once one.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 7:15Speaker 3: It's excited to hear someone say.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Like that was a really fun project as well. That
- 7:19Speaker 2: was so cool. We loved that. That was great, And yes,
- 7:22Speaker 2: we were there the whole time, but we had a.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Lot of fun like like in between.
- 7:27Speaker 2: In between getting to the wall.
- 7:29Speaker 5: And like we love what we do and we love
- 7:32Speaker 5: doing it together, and so I think like we always
- 7:35Speaker 5: want to be as much involved in it's about like, yes,
- 7:40Speaker 5: we want things to be the way that we want
- 7:42Speaker 5: them to be, and so like you know, having having
- 7:45Speaker 5: us like do everything by hand, but also we just
- 7:48Speaker 5: enjoyed that process.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so much.
- 7:51Speaker 2: It's so fun for us to like we get to
- 7:54Speaker 2: we really enjoy each other's company. We really love I know,
- 8:00Speaker 2: I really love, like we love hanging out with each other,
- 8:03Speaker 2: and so you know, doing a project like that, it's
- 8:06Speaker 2: we get we're in. Even though it is going to
- 8:08Speaker 2: be tough after like you know sometime it's gonna it's
- 8:12Speaker 2: really fun because we get to go to a different location.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Everything's kind of new, you know, it feels fresh, and
- 8:18Speaker 2: then we get to accomplish this really big thing. It
- 8:20Speaker 2: feels like, I don't know, it feels like something like
- 8:24Speaker 2: you've been challenged to do something, and it feels like
- 8:27Speaker 2: such a good feeling. Stay, yeah, it's really cool.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Yeah, but I have so much respect that you do
- 8:34Speaker 1: all the things together. You live together together, like twenty
- 8:37Speaker 1: four hours a day.
- 8:38Speaker 3: It's crazy, you know, that's really.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Still after twenty years. You know, like you made each
- 8:44Speaker 4: other yesterday. When you look at each other, I'm like,
- 8:46Speaker 4: that's I'm so.
- 8:47Speaker 5: Impressed, so so weird. It really is pretty fascinating.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I think that. I think because what we're doing is
- 8:56Speaker 2: so like like most of what we're doing is just
- 8:59Speaker 2: our you know, our work, Like we're working all the
- 9:02Speaker 2: time on everything and multiple things at the same time.
- 9:05Speaker 2: It's kind of like really perfect to have like be
- 9:09Speaker 2: doing that with your best friend and then they're they're
- 9:11Speaker 2: with you the whole time like constantly, Like Darren, like
- 9:15Speaker 2: this has been happening since the beginning of when we
- 9:17Speaker 2: started working together. But like some like we'd have we're
- 9:21Speaker 2: working on something and I'm like, oh gosh, I really
- 9:23Speaker 2: don't know how to approach that, and then all of
- 9:25Speaker 2: a sudden, Darren's got the best idea for how to
- 9:28Speaker 2: do that, and that feeling is just.
- 9:32Speaker 3: When you're stuck and then all of a sudden, just
- 9:34Speaker 3: someone appears, and.
- 9:37Speaker 2: You know it's kind of amazing, which it happens all
- 9:40Speaker 2: the time, Like it's always like one of us is
- 9:43Speaker 2: like I don't know how to do this, and another
- 9:45Speaker 2: one give me a look at that.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Oh I know.
- 9:48Speaker 2: It's just like, yes, that's so, that's like the perfect
- 9:52Speaker 2: that's a perfect team, I think. And so then I
- 9:55Speaker 2: think we are doing we're like our whole life is
- 9:59Speaker 2: our creative practice, and so like we like when we
- 10:03Speaker 2: were walking the dog, we're talking about like this project
- 10:07Speaker 2: or that project, or you know, we'll be driving to
- 10:11Speaker 2: dinner somewhere and we'll be conceptualizing what such and such is,
- 10:16Speaker 2: and so it's kind of like perfect. They were always
- 10:19Speaker 2: together because the conversations in this back and forth doesn't work.
- 10:23Speaker 3: It doesn't when the other person isn't around.
- 10:25Speaker 2: You know, you kind of get like like lost, like
- 10:28Speaker 2: they're now the way.
- 10:29Speaker 3: So we've been doing it this way for so long.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Though today I went and ran some errands this morning,
- 10:35Speaker 2: I came back and you did all those cool drawings.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Totally, But I can only get it to a point
- 10:39Speaker 5: because I need to consult with you know, like I need.
- 10:41Speaker 3: To like hear your voice on what I'm doing.
- 10:45Speaker 4: How are you doing it.
- 10:45Speaker 1: It's just like you both have to agree about a
- 10:48Speaker 1: painting or drawing how to get it, Like you said,
- 10:51Speaker 1: you did a drawing this morning, and then you both
- 10:54Speaker 1: have to say, okay, now we have to choose to
- 10:56Speaker 1: call us.
- 10:58Speaker 3: It's more intertwined. Even than that.
- 11:00Speaker 5: It's more like, let's say, if it's just one thing,
- 11:03Speaker 5: it's just simple, like a painting, Like we're going to
- 11:05Speaker 5: make this painting, and so we're to involve us talking
- 11:09Speaker 5: to each other a lot, probably over the course of
- 11:12Speaker 5: us eating dinner, walking the dog, like em said, whatever,
- 11:17Speaker 5: you know, sitting in the studio doing something else, but
- 11:19Speaker 5: talking about what it is that we are trying to
- 11:22Speaker 5: achieve with the next thing that we're going to do.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Then it would.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Involve probably both of us drawing and then rough ideas.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Once we've spoken about verbally what it is we want
- 11:36Speaker 5: to do, then we would both kind of draw a
- 11:38Speaker 5: little bit based on those discussions, then look at those.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Put them to get like find the parts of them that.
- 11:50Speaker 5: We we both we both feel the strongest.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Yeah, talk more about it.
- 11:56Speaker 5: Put it into a composition of some sort, and then
- 12:02Speaker 5: continue to draw, call out kind of thing like oh, okay,
- 12:05Speaker 5: can I'm going to work on the trees and that
- 12:09Speaker 5: house there, And it always seems just to be okay,
- 12:12Speaker 5: but like I'm going to do this, and then it's like, great,
- 12:15Speaker 5: you do that, You're going to be great at that.
- 12:17Speaker 5: I'm going to start working on the mountains over here
- 12:20Speaker 5: and start on the vasa flowers or whatever it is.
- 12:23Speaker 5: And then we would probably do that and then honestly,
- 12:27Speaker 5: at some point run over each person's part a little bit,
- 12:30Speaker 5: do you know what I mean? Like you usually run
- 12:32Speaker 5: over what I've done and make minimal changes and vice versa.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Then get it onto a canvas, then call out who's
- 12:44Speaker 5: going to paint what because it might not be what
- 12:46Speaker 5: we drew and so to be the same thing. And
- 12:48Speaker 5: a lot of the time that's the logistic of space,
- 12:51Speaker 5: Like okay, I'm going to one person needs to start
- 12:55Speaker 5: at the top, one needs to on this side, and
- 12:57Speaker 5: one person needs to be on this side of one
- 12:59Speaker 5: person to be down long, and one person needs to
- 13:01Speaker 5: be high. I'm going to start by just painting all
- 13:03Speaker 5: this background in on the sky. There's a few certain
- 13:06Speaker 5: things that each of us, especially when it comes to painting,
- 13:08Speaker 5: that EM has strengths that aren't my strengths. So it
- 13:12Speaker 5: wouldn't even be a question of who's going to do
- 13:14Speaker 5: that if it's a gradient. You know who I'm so
- 13:17Speaker 5: good at gradients. I'm not that good at gradients, whereas
- 13:20Speaker 5: EM is very good at making like a soft fade
- 13:23Speaker 5: with spray paint, auror brush. So even when if we're
- 13:27Speaker 5: painting something, even if there's a gradient in that, I
- 13:29Speaker 5: just don't even bother to really do it, because why
- 13:32Speaker 5: would I if I'm.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Not as good Because you know each other street exactly.
- 13:35Speaker 5: So then if there's a gradient in the sky, wouldn't
- 13:38Speaker 5: even be a question of who's going to paint the sky.
- 13:40Speaker 5: EM would just start painting the sky because it's got
- 13:42Speaker 5: a gradient in it. Or if it wasn't that, I
- 13:45Speaker 5: would just paint in all three colors and just stop
- 13:49Speaker 5: and move somewhere else. And without even having to say anything,
- 13:53Speaker 5: she knows that it's time to put it. When she's
- 13:56Speaker 5: got time, let's switch because it's time to fade those
- 14:00Speaker 5: three colors in the sky, like in the sky together.
- 14:04Speaker 2: But there's a lot of talking. We're talking yeah, like paint. Yeah,
- 14:09Speaker 2: we have to communicate like so much. Like I'll paint something,
- 14:13Speaker 2: I'm like, Darren, what do you think of this color?
- 14:15Speaker 2: And he's like, yep, that's great?
- 14:16Speaker 3: Or do you like the wood grain on this? I
- 14:18Speaker 3: made it like light?
- 14:19Speaker 4: Or what like?
- 14:19Speaker 3: It's like it's constant.
- 14:21Speaker 5: It's constant discussion, the same as any creative person working
- 14:25Speaker 5: on their own.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Speaks to themselves in their mind.
- 14:30Speaker 5: We have to say everything out loud because it's not
- 14:34Speaker 5: just it isn't my project. It's out you know, it's
- 14:38Speaker 5: it's two people, and so you really do need to
- 14:40Speaker 5: run by, you know, like you can't just be like oh,
- 14:43Speaker 5: like in your mind, if you're a painter.
- 14:44Speaker 3: You'd be like, oh, what do I think of those
- 14:46Speaker 3: wood grain on that? It's that good? Maybe I can
- 14:49Speaker 3: do better, But.
- 14:50Speaker 5: I have to you have to say that loud so
- 14:52Speaker 5: that she could also weigh in and be like Enoran
- 14:54Speaker 5: sty that doesn't look good. And then I know, like
- 14:57Speaker 5: I've got my answer, great, Okay, cool, We've I'm going
- 15:00Speaker 5: to paint over it.
- 15:00Speaker 3: I know.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Over the years as well, I feel like we've become
- 15:04Speaker 2: so efficient as well, where.
- 15:06Speaker 3: It's ridiculous how it operates now.
- 15:08Speaker 5: It is kind of coraozy when people who don't know
- 15:10Speaker 5: what's in our studio friends even if they're staying with
- 15:12Speaker 5: us and we're just working because they're here and they'll
- 15:14Speaker 5: just hang out and talk to us.
- 15:16Speaker 3: So often they'll be like, this is insane one I'm
- 15:18Speaker 3: working right now. This is crazy.
- 15:19Speaker 2: It's really like I think, because we both know like
- 15:22Speaker 2: all of that stuff, like okay, I know Darren can
- 15:25Speaker 2: figure this part out, or like this is Darren's strong
- 15:28Speaker 2: suit or whatever. It's there's so much communication that we've
- 15:34Speaker 2: already had in the past that we so we already
- 15:36Speaker 2: know what's going on. Do you know what I mean?
- 15:38Speaker 4: Like now you take the past in the pictures.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Exactly, we know we know what to do. It's like
- 15:43Speaker 3: a non human being.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Where the other one is going to do actually exactly,
- 15:47Speaker 1: but maybe we should explained that you paint at the
- 15:50Speaker 1: same time at the painting together. It's not like one
- 15:53Speaker 1: of your statements off or doing something. You are on
- 15:56Speaker 1: it together. Like you said, the top bottom.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Around exactly, I mean small, it's small.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Then we do alternate.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Yeah, then we might be working on a couple of
- 16:07Speaker 2: them at the same time, and then one person starts
- 16:10Speaker 2: one part and then the other person starts the other one,
- 16:12Speaker 2: and then we switch and then keep switching until they're done.
- 16:15Speaker 2: You know. It's and that's like we probably switch like
- 16:18Speaker 2: twenty times or something like. It's some it's it's almost
- 16:22Speaker 2: like whatever's going on with this, this is like some
- 16:27Speaker 2: sort of like dance or something.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Where yeah, it kind of is you're right, yeah, yeah,
- 16:33Speaker 5: it's like it's it's.
- 16:35Speaker 2: We're so used to it though now that it doesn't
- 16:38Speaker 2: even seem strange to us or like, wow, this is
- 16:40Speaker 2: weird that I'm making some work with someone else. It
- 16:42Speaker 2: just feels exactly right. And I feel like now especially,
- 16:49Speaker 2: I mean every year, I feel like we kind of
- 16:51Speaker 2: reflect on what we're doing, and it really feels like
- 16:55Speaker 2: right at this point now where we're really like kind
- 16:58Speaker 2: of on fire.
- 16:58Speaker 5: Like it's really in the way we're working together more
- 17:02Speaker 5: than ever, just keeps getting stronger. Like the first paintings
- 17:06Speaker 5: we made together are so clunky, you know what I mean,
- 17:08Speaker 5: and trying to figure out how to do it, and
- 17:10Speaker 5: then every step from that point it just becomes more
- 17:14Speaker 5: and more harmonious. It's pretty cool working towards I guess.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Yeah, right, really impressied about the twit you still keep
- 17:23Speaker 1: doing it talking and walk the dark or I know
- 17:29Speaker 1: it's he must be like twins. Like if you're not together,
- 17:32Speaker 1: you will feed strange.
- 17:34Speaker 5: If we've never you know, we've never spent a day
- 17:36Speaker 5: apart from each other in those twenty years.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Wow, we're around each other a lot there. Sometimes we're like.
- 17:43Speaker 6: Obviously today, yeah totally, or like I mean sometimes i'll Google,
- 17:51Speaker 6: get my head done or alls.
- 17:54Speaker 3: It's stuff that we go.
- 17:55Speaker 5: The thing is we live that we don't just we
- 17:57Speaker 5: don't just work together. We'd live the same life. Our
- 18:00Speaker 5: friends are the same exact friends. It's not like I'm
- 18:02Speaker 5: like I'm going to do like I'm not even part
- 18:06Speaker 5: of it. It's not like and it's just because it's
- 18:09Speaker 5: not by intention. It's just it's not like I'm like,
- 18:12Speaker 5: I'm in a soccer team, so I'm like every Thursday
- 18:15Speaker 5: I'm at like soccer practice and then also going on
- 18:19Speaker 5: a trip with the soccer team after. We like there's
- 18:23Speaker 5: never any Every single person we know is the exact
- 18:26Speaker 5: same people.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Like our life is so intertwined.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Exactly, like all of our friends are the same.
- 18:32Speaker 3: We don't where would I go, where would I be
- 18:35Speaker 3: by myself? What would I be doing? Do you know
- 18:37Speaker 3: what I mean?
- 18:37Speaker 5: Like, the only reason I would be by myself for
- 18:40Speaker 5: a long period of time is because I'd made a
- 18:42Speaker 5: point of either wanting to get away from you.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Do you know what I mean? Like it have to
- 18:48Speaker 3: be like we have to be a part.
- 18:49Speaker 5: So I'm gonna physically, like go to New York for
- 18:53Speaker 5: a week and be by myself.
- 18:54Speaker 3: But I don't want to do that, So we're not
- 18:56Speaker 3: doing that, That's exact.
- 18:58Speaker 5: And to wear us word opportunity where I ever go,
- 19:00Speaker 5: Where would I be doing?
- 19:01Speaker 3: What would I be doing?
- 19:02Speaker 4: You didn't know what to do?
- 19:03Speaker 3: I wouldn't Well, I'm sure i'd manage. I bet you
- 19:06Speaker 3: would be really weird.
- 19:07Speaker 5: It would be so strange to be on like to
- 19:10Speaker 5: spend days on your own.
- 19:13Speaker 3: But then also, like I said, I don't know, there's
- 19:16Speaker 3: no nothing that it would.
- 19:18Speaker 5: Have to be purpose like we've got to spend some
- 19:20Speaker 5: time apart. This is getting weird, And then we would
- 19:23Speaker 5: choose to do it because there's no scenario that's come up.
- 19:26Speaker 2: I like that, when would we think that this is weird?
- 19:32Speaker 2: I think also like most of mine, I realized recently
- 19:35Speaker 2: that most of my dreams Darren's there with me in
- 19:38Speaker 2: my dreams.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I'll tell Darren my dream and I'm like,
- 19:45Speaker 2: it's so true, Like we were at this place like this.
- 19:49Speaker 4: It's not like I wasn't.
- 19:53Speaker 3: It's a real tri It just it's not It's just
- 19:56Speaker 3: how it is.
- 19:56Speaker 2: I know. I think it's really I mean, we really
- 19:59Speaker 2: do love each other. And when we first started hanging out,
- 20:02Speaker 2: we were like, oh my god, I love hanging out
- 20:05Speaker 2: with you so much. But then the art connect, like
- 20:08Speaker 2: the actual creative connection, and then like the fact that
- 20:11Speaker 2: we're doing that together. It just is our life.
- 20:14Speaker 5: Like some people a lot of the time say, how
- 20:16Speaker 5: do you work together, live together and live together? And
- 20:19Speaker 5: how is it that you have any like you that
- 20:23Speaker 5: that works? And you don't argue? And I think in
- 20:26Speaker 5: a weird way, you're either relationships. All relationships the dynamics.
- 20:32Speaker 3: They just are what they are. None are wrong or right.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Some people need space, some people don't.
- 20:36Speaker 5: Some people fight, some people don't based on their personality types.
- 20:41Speaker 5: And for whatever reason, this scenario that wherein actually is
- 20:48Speaker 5: part of what makes it makes our relationship stronger and
- 20:53Speaker 5: good because of the foundation of I think what it
- 20:57Speaker 5: is that we're doing so it's like if it didn't work,
- 21:01Speaker 5: then it would sabotage one would each would sabotage each other,
- 21:06Speaker 5: and the relationship would fail because you're fighting so much
- 21:08Speaker 5: because you can't work together because it's not the right
- 21:11Speaker 5: match for you.
- 21:12Speaker 3: To work together. And then vice versa. You know, you
- 21:15Speaker 3: like the work.
- 21:16Speaker 5: You know, maybe it's hard because you're you know, they're
- 21:18Speaker 5: not supposed to be. But then in this situation, it
- 21:22Speaker 5: is it does work really well when we work together. Yeah,
- 21:25Speaker 5: and so, and that strengthens our actual relationship too.
- 21:30Speaker 3: It's crazy that it works that way.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I know another another thing I don't know, Tell me
- 21:37Speaker 2: if you agree with this. I thought this recently. Is
- 21:40Speaker 2: that moving here? I think that because.
- 21:44Speaker 4: The new house essentially in Los Angeles.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Because we've been dating for like three three and a
- 21:50Speaker 2: half years or something, and we did spend a lot
- 21:52Speaker 2: of time together.
- 21:52Speaker 3: We did, but not all the time.
- 21:53Speaker 5: We had a different jobs like that was we like
- 21:56Speaker 5: lived in Australia, we'd just come out of art school.
- 21:58Speaker 3: We had like job like you worked in a bar
- 22:00Speaker 3: or whatever.
- 22:00Speaker 5: We were like away from each other for most of
- 22:02Speaker 5: the day a lot of the time.
- 22:04Speaker 1: So it was when when you moved from Australia to
- 22:07Speaker 1: Los Angeles. Since you have moved to early, you haven't
- 22:10Speaker 1: been a part more than one day.
- 22:11Speaker 5: Not even in Australia. We never spent a full day
- 22:13Speaker 5: apart from each other. But we were away from each
- 22:15Speaker 5: other like all day when we were at jobs.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, Like Darren worked at a cold center and
- 22:21Speaker 2: then he would go to work like in the morning
- 22:23Speaker 2: and new work at a bar, and I worked at night.
- 22:26Speaker 2: But he would come, he would knock off work and
- 22:28Speaker 2: then come and see me at the bar before he
- 22:31Speaker 2: went home, and then I would see him. He would
- 22:33Speaker 2: stay up for me when I got home. But I
- 22:36Speaker 2: think what I was going to say is like when
- 22:38Speaker 2: we moved here, because I mean, we had a couple
- 22:40Speaker 2: of friends, but we don't have any family here. This
- 22:43Speaker 2: city felt kind of like pretty, you know, overwhelming when
- 22:47Speaker 2: we first moved here. I feel like it felt it
- 22:50Speaker 2: felt like, you know, all the things we were doing
- 22:54Speaker 2: obviously we were doing together because we've been collaborating together
- 22:57Speaker 2: for like three years at that point, So any openings
- 23:01Speaker 2: or other writers that we were hanging out with to
- 23:04Speaker 2: paint with, we were doing it together. But I think
- 23:07Speaker 2: that because we came here together doing that exact same thing.
- 23:12Speaker 2: That was really when things became like more like you
- 23:16Speaker 2: know what I mean, because we it was us moving
- 23:21Speaker 2: to this really big city together and then you know,
- 23:26Speaker 2: managing that, figuring out what what to do here and
- 23:30Speaker 2: how to you know, work here, and stuff like that,
- 23:34Speaker 2: and so that that's why I think that all of
- 23:36Speaker 2: our friends are combined friends.
- 23:40Speaker 5: Like we started a whole new life here in that scenario.
- 23:45Speaker 5: It's not like our you know, like, oh, these are
- 23:47Speaker 5: my high school friends and I go do stuff with them.
- 23:49Speaker 5: All our friends are the same because we've met them,
- 23:51Speaker 5: we created them all together.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I see what you mean.
- 23:56Speaker 4: And the family is not just three blocks away.
- 23:58Speaker 3: So we really do have to have a job that's back, yeah, big.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Time, because otherwise it will be like okay, that's pretty long.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Okay, I'm going home exactly two days later, exactly.
- 24:15Speaker 4: I think.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Also, we have to quick talk about some of the collapse.
- 24:19Speaker 1: You have been doing so many interesting and I love
- 24:23Speaker 1: my artists. Like you said, don't just only have the paintings.
- 24:26Speaker 1: You have like the paintings, murals and collapse so you
- 24:29Speaker 1: can navigate in the art industry.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it's really cool.
- 24:33Speaker 3: I love that part. Of it too.
- 24:35Speaker 5: I really enjoy that part of it. I think we
- 24:37Speaker 5: both did. Like I really enjoy like I think some people.
- 24:39Speaker 5: And it can be hard sometimes as an artist to work,
- 24:43Speaker 5: you know, when you do a collaboration with the brand,
- 24:46Speaker 5: you've got to maneuver.
- 24:47Speaker 3: When you're a visual artist and you make paintings, it
- 24:49Speaker 3: ends with you.
- 24:50Speaker 5: You can do whatever you want, you can make it,
- 24:52Speaker 5: you can do whatever you want. And generally we kind
- 24:55Speaker 5: of can w if someone wants to do some sort
- 24:57Speaker 5: of commercial project or collaboration with us coming to us
- 25:00Speaker 5: to do what we do. But there are limits, you know,
- 25:04Speaker 5: and and borders on that. But I kind of find
- 25:09Speaker 5: like I enjoy that those limits sometimes do in that process.
- 25:13Speaker 3: It's kind of nice.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Definitely. I feel like every time, I mean, every single
- 25:17Speaker 2: thing that we do, I feel like we always come
- 25:20Speaker 2: away from it with something something extra, you.
- 25:24Speaker 3: Know, we learn something from it, you take something from.
- 25:27Speaker 2: It, like someone because someone might come to us and
- 25:29Speaker 2: they're like, we really want you to do this, and
- 25:31Speaker 2: we love X, Y and Z that you've done, you know,
- 25:34Speaker 2: and so they already have something in their mind, like
- 25:38Speaker 2: a path that they want us to go down, and
- 25:40Speaker 2: so then we have to explore that path, and then
- 25:42Speaker 2: when we go down it, we find other things.
- 25:44Speaker 5: And we realize like, oh, yeah, that's right, that was
- 25:47Speaker 5: good that, you know, because it's like it might.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Be an older thing.
- 25:50Speaker 5: And then yeah, you like figure out how to refresh
- 25:53Speaker 5: that and then you it gets like remixed and then
- 25:56Speaker 5: and then you like have like learned something from that.
- 26:00Speaker 3: It's like change that process.
- 26:01Speaker 2: It's really cool and I think that, I mean quite
- 26:04Speaker 2: often when people come to us, because we have like
- 26:07Speaker 2: a lot of different ways that we do things. I
- 26:10Speaker 2: think that we have like multiple angles that people are
- 26:13Speaker 2: coming to us to collaborate with them, you know. So
- 26:16Speaker 2: it's kind of like we're really fortunate that there's so
- 26:23Speaker 2: many exciting things that are around us that we can
- 26:26Speaker 2: apply our world to, you know. And it is really
- 26:31Speaker 2: fun working with people. We love. We love meeting people
- 26:36Speaker 2: and then creating a relationship with them, and then it's
- 26:41Speaker 2: so special. Honestly, it's like probably I mean, we love
- 26:45Speaker 2: making work, but then it's so cool to have like
- 26:48Speaker 2: these bonds with other humans and then have those bonds
- 26:53Speaker 2: last like many many years. You know, like we're kind
- 26:56Speaker 2: of like all on these funny journeys together and they
- 27:00Speaker 2: eve in and out and that I don't know, it's
- 27:03Speaker 2: really cool to have like relationships and to have connections
- 27:10Speaker 2: with other people. And so that's why it's cool to
- 27:12Speaker 2: do this.
- 27:13Speaker 3: When you do these collapse, you've met, there's a team,
- 27:15Speaker 3: there's a new team.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Yes, whoever is you're working with, and they've got their
- 27:18Speaker 5: own fresh ideas. And it's also cool to hear because
- 27:22Speaker 5: like it's kind of like what we were saying, but
- 27:24Speaker 5: they see something in your work and there's something about
- 27:27Speaker 5: it that reflects with them, and so kind of getting
- 27:30Speaker 5: that from someone it's kind of nice too.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it's really cool. We're lucky that we're lucky that
- 27:39Speaker 2: because of how our work is, we have a whole
- 27:43Speaker 2: kind of bunch of all different kinds of creative people,
- 27:47Speaker 2: all different like people from all different walks of life
- 27:50Speaker 2: that we're we're able to work with because essentially it's
- 27:54Speaker 2: just it's just the two of us, like working together,
- 27:58Speaker 2: you know, each day, and so in our studio it's
- 28:02Speaker 2: just us, and then we get to work with all
- 28:04Speaker 2: of these other people throughout the year. So it kind
- 28:06Speaker 2: of means that we get to have so we get
- 28:09Speaker 2: to hang out with people and get to know what
- 28:12Speaker 2: they're up to and stuff it's cool.
- 28:14Speaker 4: And any new interesting collapse coming up.
- 28:18Speaker 5: We just did a really cool one for a chocolate
- 28:20Speaker 5: company that was really cool, like a chocolate company here
- 28:23Speaker 5: in LA. They're called ann Sons're in Beverly Hillton. It's
- 28:26Speaker 5: like a really beautiful chocolate like bonbond company and they
- 28:30Speaker 5: collaborate with different artists. They've done some really really cool ones.
- 28:34Speaker 5: They just did ed Ruschet one which was so cool.
- 28:37Speaker 5: It's like a book, a bound book basically and he
- 28:41Speaker 5: I think it says made in California on it, like
- 28:44Speaker 5: in ed Rushe you know type, and then you open
- 28:48Speaker 5: it up and there's just one lump of chocolate in
- 28:51Speaker 5: the shape, like with the shape of California in it.
- 28:53Speaker 3: It's so cool. And they did a Hilary Petchis one
- 28:56Speaker 3: that was really good.
- 28:58Speaker 5: They do great collaborations and so we're really happy to
- 29:01Speaker 5: do that with them just because I love the company.
- 29:03Speaker 4: And what did you do with them?
- 29:05Speaker 5: We designed a box of chocolates for Valentine's Day and
- 29:10Speaker 5: it was really cool.
- 29:11Speaker 3: It was like it's like a it's like a box of.
- 29:14Speaker 5: Bond bonds, like heart shaped, you know, Valentine's Day chocolates
- 29:19Speaker 5: and you can kind of like open it up and
- 29:21Speaker 5: inside there was a comic we made, like a little
- 29:23Speaker 5: comic strip inside as well, and then and then on
- 29:26Speaker 5: the back of that was all the names of the chocolates.
- 29:29Speaker 3: And then yeah, like did all the packaging, which I love.
- 29:31Speaker 4: We loved doing it.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I love.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Doing that kind of stuff, like package design and things
- 29:35Speaker 3: like that.
- 29:35Speaker 2: And they're really sweet people, and it was like, again,
- 29:39Speaker 2: that was like so cool because we didn't know them beforehand,
- 29:42Speaker 2: and then we got to meet the owner and that's
- 29:45Speaker 2: who we were working with, and he's so cool. And
- 29:48Speaker 2: I think that it's kind of like, you know, just
- 29:51Speaker 2: the beginning of our cob collaborations with them, Like we'll
- 29:54Speaker 2: continue to do stuff with them in the future too,
- 29:57Speaker 2: which is amazing because their chocolate.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Is del It's so good. Okay, it's really really good.
- 30:04Speaker 5: We also did a call collaboration that will come out
- 30:07Speaker 5: this year with a friend of ours.
- 30:10Speaker 3: He who we know through all the Seventh later guys.
- 30:14Speaker 5: He owns like a company called Insomniac, which is.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Like a electronic like DC. It's a DM.
- 30:23Speaker 5: It's called like DC as a festival called DC which
- 30:26Speaker 5: is called Electric Daisy Carnival, which is like a massive rave.
- 30:30Speaker 3: It's huge. It's like in Las Vegas.
- 30:33Speaker 5: I think over the weekend they have like five hundred
- 30:35Speaker 5: thousand people go to DC.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Isn't that It's like massive.
- 30:39Speaker 5: Yes, it's a huge crazy and he just built that
- 30:43Speaker 5: up from like he started just putting on illegal raves
- 30:46Speaker 5: in downtown LA Like it's so cool.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Yeah, he started in the nineties just doing like these
- 30:51Speaker 2: crazy raves where it would just be like you have
- 30:54Speaker 2: to call this phone number to get the address of
- 30:57Speaker 2: the rave.
- 30:57Speaker 4: Like that was that it started.
- 30:59Speaker 5: Yeah, and then now he's at this giant company and
- 31:02Speaker 5: he's a really good guy and the team and we
- 31:04Speaker 5: have friends who worked.
- 31:05Speaker 3: There as well.
- 31:05Speaker 5: And then and so it's there. We've been talking about
- 31:10Speaker 5: doing something with them for a while and then this
- 31:13Speaker 5: year is their thirtieth anniversary, and so we built like
- 31:16Speaker 5: a made like a cool capsule for them, just some
- 31:19Speaker 5: really crazy designs of some really weird stuff that they
- 31:22Speaker 5: can put onto, like you know, fluffy hats and.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Jackets and T shirts and and and.
- 31:30Speaker 5: Stuff like that, like other scarves and all different kind
- 31:33Speaker 5: of crazy stuff.
- 31:34Speaker 3: It's going to be really cool.
- 31:35Speaker 2: And then yeah, so yeah, a C in Las Vegas
- 31:39Speaker 2: is in in May, and so yeah, we were working
- 31:42Speaker 2: on that last year last year, so yeah, that all
- 31:47Speaker 2: that's coming.
- 31:48Speaker 5: Up to so the years it's completely but then then
- 31:52Speaker 5: this year and then once we're done with these murals,
- 31:54Speaker 5: we have to just get to work on this show.
- 31:58Speaker 2: They've begun like conceptualizing for the museum show. We've got
- 32:02Speaker 2: like and when the opening for that that is going
- 32:04Speaker 2: to be the fourteenth of November. Okay, we're building it.
- 32:08Speaker 2: They came to us to build a really big immersive
- 32:11Speaker 2: installation in their space, and so that's like a dream
- 32:15Speaker 2: project for us because we love building installations like Darren
- 32:19Speaker 2: was seeing before, and so this one we're going to
- 32:22Speaker 2: be building, like we're going to be completely transforming the
- 32:26Speaker 2: space and making our own world in there. So that's
- 32:29Speaker 2: like we've we we found out about the show like
- 32:33Speaker 2: maybe six months ago, and we were like racking our
- 32:36Speaker 2: brains to try to figure out how to change the
- 32:38Speaker 2: whole entire space, and then like maybe in January we
- 32:42Speaker 2: figured it out, and now we're like now we're like
- 32:45Speaker 2: bringing all the pieces to like create actually create.
- 32:48Speaker 3: The vendors to fabricate.
- 32:49Speaker 5: You know, we've just got to logistically work out how
- 32:52Speaker 5: to fabricate a lot of the things that need to
- 32:53Speaker 5: be fabricated. Then we're going to have to design everything
- 32:57Speaker 5: and then make some pain makes some work for it
