- 0:00Speaker 1: This is not going well. It's one more thing.
- 0:03Speaker 2: I'm one more thing.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Before we get to the this is not going well
- 0:13Speaker 1: story of the day. So the WNBA, that's the Women's
- 0:18Speaker 1: National Basketball Association, had their All Star Game over the weekend,
- 0:22Speaker 1: in which you take the best players in your entire
- 0:24Speaker 1: league and have them play against each other as kind
- 0:28Speaker 1: of an exhibition for the fans. We've all seen this
- 0:31Speaker 1: sort of thing in other sports.
- 0:34Speaker 3: I saw see wild action and the skills on display, and.
- 0:38Speaker 2: The greatest you know, going at each other. It's fun.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Somebody put together a reel of the worst moments of
- 0:46Speaker 1: the game. The visual probably is more important than the audio.
- 0:50Speaker 1: The audio sounds like this, five seconds left of the
- 0:54Speaker 1: third Coppers jumping not able to hit that one young.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Camp whip it in Malanga. No, it's a howured it
- 1:07Speaker 2: just takes it right back.
- 1:08Speaker 3: What a pass from Mecca Asia Wilson can't finish it.
- 1:13Speaker 1: The lots and lots of missed layups in which the
- 1:17Speaker 1: ball never got above the rim.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I realized that they air balls from twelve feet and
- 1:24Speaker 2: I realized.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Somebody picked out the worst moments from the game, which
- 1:27Speaker 1: is slightly unfair. I mean, if you put together the highlights,
- 1:31Speaker 1: the best moments. I'm sure there were some, but I
- 1:33Speaker 1: was amazed looking at that how many, just like it's
- 1:39Speaker 1: me out there, at my current age plays there were
- 1:44Speaker 1: in that game?
- 1:46Speaker 3: Did you see that I did? It was embarrassing, It
- 1:50Speaker 3: was terrible. It was It was not very good basketball,
- 1:53Speaker 3: which you know, to your point, is kind of misleading
- 1:56Speaker 3: because often the WNBA or high level college women's basketball
- 2:00Speaker 3: is very good basketball. Yeah it's nowhere near men's basketball,
- 2:04Speaker 3: but it's very good basketball.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Man.
- 2:07Speaker 1: That was quite a collection of really awful plays.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know, I was thinking about this a
- 2:12Speaker 3: lot because I really want to be fair on this topic.
- 2:15Speaker 3: You know, it's easy to just be snide and you know,
- 2:18Speaker 3: cynical about it. But as the father of a couple
- 2:21Speaker 3: of girls who took took part in sports various levels,
- 2:24Speaker 3: and a guy who coached girl sports, which was an
- 2:27Speaker 3: experience I absolutely loved and I am staunchly, like enthusiastically
- 2:33Speaker 3: in favor of girl sports.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Here's the disconnect.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Sports, or if you want to sugn European sport is
- 2:42Speaker 3: a lot of different things on different levels.
- 2:45Speaker 2: It's exercise, it's fun.
- 2:49Speaker 3: It's learning his skill, it's learning about teamwork, it's playing
- 2:53Speaker 3: at a high level.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Perhaps it's getting a scholarship, maybe at the very highest.
- 3:01Speaker 2: It's popular entertainment.
- 3:04Speaker 3: But to say that a sport, say the WNBA, is
- 3:09Speaker 3: not very good entertainment, isn't to denigrate anything like below
- 3:14Speaker 3: that on the totem pole. It's still great in a
- 3:17Speaker 3: hundred different ways. But don't pretend it's great entertainment.
- 3:21Speaker 2: It's not. I'll give you a perfect example.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I love baseball, the game of baseball, the sport of baseball.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I up until recently, was a big Major League baseball fan.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Nobody goes to college baseball games until you get to
- 3:36Speaker 3: like the college World Series and the elite are trying
- 3:39Speaker 3: to win national championships, and go ahead tohead. You got
- 3:42Speaker 3: an average college baseball game, even some fairly good programs
- 3:45Speaker 3: on a Tuesday afternoon, there are fewer people there than
- 3:50Speaker 3: like a good wing dinger of a high school basketball game.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Sure, people just don't go.
- 3:55Speaker 3: It's just for whatever reason, people don't perceive it as
- 3:57Speaker 3: great entertainment. I'm a baseball freak, so I do I
- 4:00Speaker 3: go to games, but I would never ever denegrate what
- 4:05Speaker 3: those baseball players are doing or why they're doing it
- 4:08Speaker 3: or their skills or whatever. But stop pretending that the
- 4:12Speaker 3: WNBA is great entertainment and the only reason it's not
- 4:16Speaker 3: huge like the NBA is because of sexism or racism
- 4:21Speaker 3: or anti lesbian phobia or whatever.
- 4:26Speaker 2: It's just not great entertainment, So stop it. Stop pretending
- 4:29Speaker 2: it is.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Different topic. As I teased, Uh, what did I say?
- 4:37Speaker 1: This is not going very well or something. Yes, I
- 4:41Speaker 1: was obsessed for a cup of coffee with the idea
- 4:44Speaker 1: of sailing around the world alone.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Oh really, yeah, I've been fascinated by the idea.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I know I'm not the guy to do it.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I read books about it, watch documentaries about it, looked
- 4:57Speaker 1: into the skills that would be take they would take
- 5:01Speaker 1: in the best roots. I was really into the idea
- 5:03Speaker 1: for a while.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Were you.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Just fascinated by the idea of it or did you
- 5:10Speaker 3: think I would at least like to consider this.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I'm not sure I understand the question.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Well, I'm fascinated by the idea of getting away with
- 5:21Speaker 3: a murder what it would take?
- 5:23Speaker 1: No, No, I was actually yeah, No, I was actually
- 5:25Speaker 1: interested in okay, like doing it someday.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah. The thing that turned me off of it is
- 5:32Speaker 1: when I realized how bad my motion sickness is. I
- 5:35Speaker 1: just thought I can't. I can't do it for that reason.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So had I just abandoned it completely, I'd be I'd
- 5:40Speaker 1: be miserable.
- 5:41Speaker 3: You know what, I have a I have a question.
- 5:43Speaker 3: I'll go ahead and do it in the thumb style
- 5:46Speaker 3: while you're talking.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Okay, So a guy attempted to do it the other day.
- 5:50Speaker 1: It happens now and then, and it's it's kind of entertaining.
- 5:55Speaker 1: But a guy tried to do it solo, California. Man
- 5:58Speaker 1: took off from Catalina Island would which a big island
- 6:00Speaker 1: just off of Los Angeles, and headed out toward Hawaii,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and a couple of weeks into his journey around the world,
- 6:09Speaker 1: thirty nine year old Kai Sato, the mast snapped on
- 6:14Speaker 1: his sailboat. That would be a bad feeling. The mass
- 6:18Speaker 1: very bad feeling. The mask snapped into He ran out
- 6:22Speaker 1: of gas on the motor, and his phone died, lifting him,
- 6:27Speaker 1: leaving him floating hopelessly outside of shipping lanes and little
- 6:32Speaker 1: hope of coming across a boat.
- 6:34Speaker 2: On the other hand, Kai, you still got your health. Uh?
- 6:38Speaker 2: No mass, no gas, no radio.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Oh well, he was licking condensation in the morning, to
- 6:44Speaker 1: try to stay alive because that was the only water
- 6:46Speaker 1: he had, and eating squid that would land on his
- 6:49Speaker 1: boat by accident. Raw. He said. He cried for days
- 6:56Speaker 1: and gave up on the idea of ever being rescued.
- 7:00Speaker 1: His goal was to try to get his motor going
- 7:02Speaker 1: long enough that he could suffocate himself and kill himself.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Could have goals. That was his plan.
- 7:09Speaker 3: And by the way, he stopped crying, you're wasting your
- 7:11Speaker 3: body fluids. Of course, I've never faced death on the Pacific.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I'm not sure that was like it. I don't know
- 7:18Speaker 1: if he sat there and decided I cry or not cry.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I think I'll cry, or maybe he drank his own tears.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Anyway, And I think this is kind of interesting about
- 7:28Speaker 1: the human spirit. After five days of crying and thinking,
- 7:33Speaker 1: five days is a long time to bob around in
- 7:35Speaker 1: the water licking condensation in the morning. Right after five
- 7:40Speaker 1: day squids, he snapped into action and began to make
- 7:43Speaker 1: shift repairs to the boat with PVC pipes and kayak paddles.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Paddles he was hoping to be seen, and he was
- 7:55Speaker 1: he the wind change or something. He ended up in
- 7:58Speaker 1: a shipping lane rescued by a passing container ship that
- 8:02Speaker 1: were on the way to the Hawaiian Islands, and he
- 8:05Speaker 1: got rescued.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Well, I don't I don't want to be a knee jerk,
- 8:10Speaker 3: armchair hard guy. It reminds me of the kind of
- 8:15Speaker 3: guy who looks at a beautiful woman says she's not
- 8:17Speaker 3: good looking.
- 8:18Speaker 2: He I wouldn't do her. Yeah, you weren't. You won't
- 8:21Speaker 2: do anybody you're not given the opportunity.
- 8:24Speaker 3: That's upset and pathetic, backward boast, and you're embarrassing yourself.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I've always hated that. So for me to say.
- 8:35Speaker 3: It took you five days to think, all right, what
- 8:37Speaker 3: do I have at hand here to craft any sort
- 8:40Speaker 3: of sale?
- 8:41Speaker 2: I've got to admit I'm a little intrigued by that.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yeah, just based on the picture and some of the
- 8:48Speaker 1: things he said. He might not be U the most
- 8:52Speaker 1: normal person, A bit.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Of a condensation liquor. If you ask, can you know
- 8:57Speaker 2: if you don't even know what I'm saying.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Oh, he's a squid eater if I've ever seen.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, holy crap, my mask broke. How do I
- 9:08Speaker 3: erect some sort of sail? I think would be my
- 9:11Speaker 3: first thought.
- 9:12Speaker 1: No, his first thought was can I get the motor
- 9:14Speaker 1: going enough to suffocate myself?
- 9:17Speaker 3: And then after five days a weep and thought, wait
- 9:20Speaker 3: a minute, A mast is a long stick. I got
- 9:24Speaker 3: some long, straight things around here.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Let me think. Yeah, I wonder if he's a bit touched,
- 9:31Speaker 2: so he used to say back in the day.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I suppose anybody who sets off the sail around
- 9:36Speaker 1: the world alone is possibly a little abnormal.
- 9:40Speaker 3: I don't have the balls to sail solo across like
- 9:43Speaker 3: a golf course water hazard.
- 9:46Speaker 2: So again, I'm not trying to be the hard ass.
- 9:48Speaker 2: I just I'm a little flabbergasted. I like calamari, which
- 9:58Speaker 2: is squid. I like suit.
- 10:00Speaker 3: I have no problem with raw fish. You'd get fluid
- 10:08Speaker 3: and nutrition. So how does squid accidentally end up on
- 10:14Speaker 3: your deck? Did they just leap in the air a lot?
- 10:16Speaker 1: I don't know. I thought that was kind of interesting too.
- 10:18Speaker 1: He survived on the squid and some other kind of
- 10:21Speaker 1: fish that ended up on his deck. They just fly
- 10:24Speaker 1: out of the water and land on your deck.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I guess, Wow, that's handy.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Yeah it is. Yeh, better luck next time there, Kai
- 10:33Speaker 1: says he's gonna try it again.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I wish sailing was a skill I had learned. I've
- 10:37Speaker 3: got a guy, actually, a train, my trainer, my personal trainer.
- 10:41Speaker 3: You're thinking, get your money back, dude, if you look
- 10:44Speaker 3: at me. He has been into sailing since he was
- 10:50Speaker 3: a little kid, and his kids are into sailing now.
- 10:54Speaker 3: And you start on a little boat, well you start
- 10:56Speaker 3: with help, but then you start on a little boat
- 10:57Speaker 3: that you can control. And as you get bigger, boat
- 11:00Speaker 3: gets bigger, and they have vergattas and races.
- 11:02Speaker 1: And stuff like that. I remember that I took lessons last.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Year, and oh that's right, Yes, how'd that go?
- 11:10Speaker 1: It's way harder than it looks, way harder, a tremendous
- 11:15Speaker 1: amount of work to do, and there's nothing relaxing about
- 11:19Speaker 1: it at all. It's constant challenge of figuring because the
- 11:23Speaker 1: wind is shifting every second. I didn't realize there was
- 11:26Speaker 1: that much work to sail, but it is constantly swing
- 11:29Speaker 1: it that way, that way, raise it, lower it, loosen
- 11:31Speaker 1: it up, tighten it up, just never ending to keep
- 11:34Speaker 1: going at all. And I don't know, I just I
- 11:39Speaker 1: had this vision of sailing to where there was a
- 11:40Speaker 1: fair amount of kick back in there. You know, let
- 11:43Speaker 1: the wind take you.
- 11:44Speaker 2: But glasses Champagne him.
- 11:46Speaker 3: There's practically none of that, and you got to make
- 11:49Speaker 3: sure that is it the boom or whatever it doesn't
- 11:51Speaker 3: like blast you in the head and the.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Yah yea yea yeah. Constantly got a worried about that
- 11:55Speaker 1: thing swinging back and cracking in the back of the head.
- 11:57Speaker 2: But it's a.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Tremendous amount of work. And I took the classes for
- 12:01Speaker 1: a couple of days and got some certificate of as
- 12:03Speaker 1: a beginning sailor, and I'm not going to try it again.
- 12:06Speaker 1: I just thought it's not for me.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Did you go with the sailor suit.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Like a little boy in wartime or did you go
- 12:14Speaker 3: with the Ted Baxter and Caddyshack blue blazer and captain's hat.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I wore close to keep me from getting sunburned. But
- 12:22Speaker 1: I remember there was a woman, one woman that showed
- 12:24Speaker 1: up to the sailing list, and she did not last
- 12:26Speaker 1: very long. Dressed it was. She was dressed in kind
- 12:30Speaker 1: of a sailor outfit, and she was all excited about it.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I think because I think a lot of people like
- 12:34Speaker 1: her and me kind of have this vision of oh,
- 12:36Speaker 1: on a boat and where you have to put the
- 12:38Speaker 1: sail up and the wind takes you and it's just
- 12:40Speaker 1: we're hanging out on the Boat's No, it's non stop
- 12:44Speaker 1: trying to figure out where the wind's coming from. And
- 12:47Speaker 1: you have to like get used to feeling it on
- 12:49Speaker 1: the back of your head or your face and then
- 12:51Speaker 1: automatically your arms adjusting the sails to where you're feeling
- 12:55Speaker 1: the wind coming from. And I never got I mean
- 12:58Speaker 1: I only tried it for hours. But getting that talent
- 13:02Speaker 1: to where you can feel the wind on your neck,
- 13:04Speaker 1: side of your face, kind of half front of your face,
- 13:07Speaker 1: side of your face, you know exactly where it is
- 13:10Speaker 1: and tacking appropriately is a skill that would Yeah, you'd
- 13:13Speaker 1: want to start it as a kid.
- 13:15Speaker 3: As a highly skilled golfer, I think I'd be decent
- 13:19Speaker 3: at that because we like try to figure out the
- 13:21Speaker 3: wind every single shot. But you all almost never get
- 13:25Speaker 3: blessed in the head if you're you know, if you
- 13:28Speaker 3: wait too long.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Yeah, made me appreciate people who have that skill or
- 13:31Speaker 1: you know, go San Francisco Bay and and realize when
- 13:34Speaker 1: I look out there, that's not some sort of pleasure really,
- 13:37Speaker 1: it's it's like hard work, constant work to do that.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, here here all right. Favorite musical artist who who?
- 13:48Speaker 3: Who writes sailing related songs. There are a few notable ones.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I gotta go Jimmy Buffett.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney, his musical cousin.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Friend of friend of Chriss Cross, Christopher Cross not far
- 14:02Speaker 1: down for me, Crosby, Stills and Nash Oh, all three
- 14:07Speaker 1: of them.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Big into sailing, A bunch of different sailing songs.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yeah, google it.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Yeah again, it's it's got. It's got a different vibe
- 14:19Speaker 1: than its reality. I feel like for most people who
- 14:22Speaker 1: have never done it.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Lionel Richie sail on right, my favorite Lionel Richie song, of.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Those constant work and getting hit in the head with
- 14:30Speaker 1: a big beam.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I picture like the wind's blown that way.
- 14:33Speaker 3: So you set the sail and you just get pushed
- 14:36Speaker 3: along by the wind.
- 14:37Speaker 1: And you have a drink, look around, sure, sure, eat
- 14:40Speaker 1: a squid or two whatever the book, get thirsty, you
- 14:43Speaker 1: lick a little condensation.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Joe, didn't you get kind of close to this on
- 14:50Speaker 2: Lake Tayo one time you guys got out there.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Well that was motor boating, not literally motor not Yes,
- 14:59Speaker 3: yes it was terrible, but you know we were powered
- 15:01Speaker 3: by a gasoline engine.
- 15:03Speaker 2: As a matter of fact, you know, Styx is another one.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Come sail away. That's not actually anyway.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Okay, they serve to soul some stranded squid and headed
- 15:16Speaker 3: for the sky.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I'm licking the bowl, beautiful. Well, I guess that's it.
