- 0:02Hey, welcome to the City Point Church podcast.
- 0:04Thanks for joining us. Every day is an opportunity to
- 0:07take hold of. So we hope this message inspires
- 0:10you and build your faith, but it helps you have more of a God
- 0:13perspective for your day. Enjoy.
- 0:17I want to speak this morning on God's will.
- 0:20What is it to have God's will? What is it to be and live in his
- 0:25will. So we've all had the the message
- 0:27this morning is your will be done.
- 0:31So you've all heard the the passage in the Bible that says
- 0:35your Kingdom come your your will be done found in Matthew 6.
- 0:41So I want to speak around the biblical meaning of will.
- 0:44I am a CHC student at ministry college.
- 0:50Thank you Alex, a little bit teachy.
- 0:54OK, so the biblical meaning of will, it is actually the Greek
- 0:59word called thelema. If anyone here is Greek, just
- 1:02have a giggle at my pronunciation and move on.
- 1:06So the word dilemma, God's will is actually deeply centred in
- 1:12what he desires and what gives him great pleasure.
- 1:20When we pray your Kingdom come, your will be done, Your thelema,
- 1:28we're actually praying, Lord, we pray for what's going to bring
- 1:32you the most amount of pleasure. We want to pray, Lord, for your
- 1:38deepest desires to be done. It's a little bit different,
- 1:43isn't it? Can you hear the personal
- 1:46aspect, the relational aspect in that it is Thelema.
- 1:54So when we pray, it's what is the deepest, what's going to
- 1:57bring you the deepest level of pleasure here, Lord, in this
- 2:01moment, in this decision, or in this outcome, what will bring
- 2:08you pleasure? You see, to know God's will,
- 2:12it's actually to know God. Great authority and power comes
- 2:20from deep intimacy with Jesus. And Jesus was the one who
- 2:24demonstrated this for us time and time again.
- 2:27How many times do you hear of him taking off and spending time
- 2:30with the Father? Deep intimacy, knowing Him
- 2:34produces great authority in your life.
- 2:37So I want to speak around 3 points on what it is to know
- 2:42what God's will isn't. That'll be point #1 #2 what
- 2:47God's will is and #3 we're going to speak on the power of your
- 2:52will be done. Feel good this morning.
- 2:56So .1 what God's will is not, and I said there is not because
- 3:02in CHC you're not allowed to say isn't you have to do the
- 3:05extended version of is not just a heads up for those of you
- 3:08considering to sign up. You're welcome because you will
- 3:12get marked down on that. Let's talk about what God's will
- 3:18is not, and it is not your assumptions.
- 3:26God is not who you think he is. He's simply who He says He is.
- 3:32Years ago, I was out to dinner with friends who I'd spent some
- 3:37time with and they were all ordering dinner.
- 3:41And I noticed it was decided for me that I wouldn't partake in
- 3:46what they had ordered because apparently I didn't like that
- 3:48food. And I, I sat there for a minute
- 3:51and I went, actually the, the food that you've ordered is in
- 3:54my top three favorite foods. And they went, really, we've
- 3:58never seen you enjoy that kind of food before.
- 4:02They had spent some time with me and so they assumed that I
- 4:07didn't like this food, but I was right there.
- 4:10They could have just asked, but we do this with God.
- 4:17We assume that because we've spent some time with Him that we
- 4:22know what he likes and what he doesn't like, but he's right in
- 4:25the room and we can actually just ask.
- 4:31I, I want to give you some examples of this because I think
- 4:37people can flow out, throw out what they like to call fleeces
- 4:40to God and taken completely out of context of what it was
- 4:44originally used for in the Old Testament.
- 4:47But they might throw things out and say things like if the Lord,
- 4:53if the pastor wears green today, I'm going to take that as a sign
- 4:58that you're totally OK for me to leave my job.
- 5:07We can assume that we know what God wants, like we just we throw
- 5:11these things out. Another one might be if I get
- 5:15approved for that line of credit, I will take that as your
- 5:20word that you want me to have that money or you want me to
- 5:24have access to it even though I've completely overextended
- 5:28myself. It's so hard to get a rental,
- 5:32Lord. So if I get approved for that
- 5:34house, then that must be you telling me that you want me to
- 5:38move in with my boyfriend, that you want me to move in with my
- 5:42girlfriend. Honestly, God must look at us
- 5:46sometimes and go. I didn't say that.
- 5:50Why do I say this? Michael?
- 5:51Are you adding words to here? It's like, is Kurong ripping
- 5:56you? What, did they leave pages out?
- 5:57Are they trying to save money? Where do we get this stuff from?
- 6:03Because I don't read it in here. God's not who you think he is.
- 6:08He's simply who you he says that he is.
- 6:13So what God's will is not, it's not everything that happens.
- 6:21It's not everything that happens.
- 6:23Have you ever heard, oh, what happened that way?
- 6:26So it must have been God's will kind of thinking.
- 6:31I actually see a lot in Christianity.
- 6:36I didn't get a high school, I didn't get that grade, and so I
- 6:41didn't get into that course. That must mean that God doesn't
- 6:44want me to pursue that career, right?
- 6:48We didn't get the loan. And so God must not desire us to
- 6:52ever own our own home. I was late to get out of bed
- 6:57this morning. So God mustn't want us to be at
- 7:01this particular meeting. Come on now.
- 7:06You've all said that at some point, not everything that
- 7:11happens is God's will. Think about it.
- 7:16If everything that happens is God's will, we can chill out.
- 7:23Pastor Chris, come and take. We can just take a seat.
- 7:28If everything that happens is God's will, then why bother?
- 7:33Like, we don't need to do a Christmas production.
- 7:38We don't need to come here every Tuesdays and all of the other
- 7:41extra meetings and do it. Pastor Mill, you can chill out
- 7:45with me. Come take a seat.
- 7:47It's OK. There's no need for all of the
- 7:50tantrums and the late nights with children.
- 7:53We can just chill because I'm here to sing.
- 7:57Hey Sarah, Sarah, whatever will be will be God's will.
- 8:05This is actually quite comfortable and then super
- 8:09annoying. But I read in God's word it says
- 8:12Jesus actually asks us to please pray for God's will to be done.
- 8:20Why would he ask us to please pray for God's will to be done?
- 8:26If everything that happens is God's will, we need to think
- 8:32things through. God's will is what brings him
- 8:35great pleasure, great desire with intention.
- 8:40Think of the words pleasure and desire.
- 8:43When we think about pleasure and desire, it reminds me of buying
- 8:46a gift for someone. Imagine you go out and to to buy
- 8:50a gift for your wife. You think what brings her great
- 8:53pleasure? What does she desire?
- 8:55What's going to make her smile? You don't give your son 2 bucks
- 9:00to go to the supermarket and go just get her whatever.
- 9:03She's be stoked with that. And he comes back with chewing
- 9:06gum and goes, Mom's kind of love this aces.
- 9:10There's got to be thought like there's no, there's no thought
- 9:14in that. There's no intention, there's no
- 9:17cost, there's no sacrifice, there's no consideration.
- 9:23God's will is Lord. What brings you pleasure?
- 9:29What do you desire to see in this?
- 9:40I'm just reading through my notes.
- 9:41I got through the que. Sarah.
- 9:45Just thank you, Holy Spirit. Not everything that happens is
- 9:51God's will. Not everything that happens he
- 9:56desires, and certainly not everything that happens gives
- 10:00him great pleasure. The girl who was repeatedly
- 10:05raped growing up was not God's will.
- 10:10The spouse who cheated on their family was never God's will.
- 10:17The young man who was felt backed into a corner and took
- 10:20his own life was never God's will.
- 10:26A brilliant brother in Jesus being assassinated in cold blood
- 10:34in front of his family is not God's will.
- 10:40There's no pleasure or desire. In that moment.
- 10:46God created man in his own image, thus giving him his own
- 10:51will and his own desires. And in so doing, God actually
- 10:56sort of removed himself from that involvement.
- 10:59He's not controlling. He didn't make us robots, which
- 11:04is why people are allowed to exercise their own will, even
- 11:09though sometimes it's rooted in deep wickedness and it's why we
- 11:13see it in the world. Do you ever hear the saying
- 11:17everything happens for a reason? Does it?
- 11:24Is the reason sometimes just that someone was being allowed
- 11:28to be operate in their own deep seated wicked will?
- 11:32This is good right here now you might say, but I thought that
- 11:39with God everything works out for good.
- 11:43So here's your tension. Will and purpose are not the
- 11:48same word, OK? God's will is His thelema, what
- 11:54gives Him great pleasure? What is, what is his desire?
- 11:59In a moment we're going to have a look at the word purpose.
- 12:02And the word is prosthesis, and we find it in Romans 828.
- 12:07I think because I don't have my glasses on.
- 12:09Could be 26. Just read the whole thing, it's
- 12:11fine. It's a good book.
- 12:14Romans purpose, it's associated with the table of showbread.
- 12:21OK, it's actually about looking at what's in front of you kind
- 12:28of at looking what is stay with me.
- 12:34God is saying here that because of His grace, because of His
- 12:39mercy, because of His nature, because of His beauty, He will
- 12:44look at what's on this table, what's on your showbread, and
- 12:48go. I know that this wasn't my
- 12:50intention. I know that this act and this
- 12:53decision over here really didn't bring me great, great pleasure,
- 12:56but here it is. I don't want to punish you for
- 12:58that. I'm not into that.
- 13:00I want to pour out my love and my mercy.
- 13:02I want to pour out forgiveness. I want to cover and wash you
- 13:06with my blood. So here it is.
- 13:08It's on this table. So here's what I'm going to do.
- 13:10I'm going to take this mess of yours and I'm going to turn it
- 13:14into a message. I'm going to take this
- 13:17loneliness and I'm going to pour my love in.
- 13:20I'm going to take this tragedy and I'm going to use it for my
- 13:24glory in Jesus name. This is the beauty of the cross.
- 13:34It's the great exchange, and it gives God great pleasure to do
- 13:41so. He wants to pour out his
- 13:46forgiveness. He wants to see you healed,
- 13:49whole, restored, set free. He wants to see you in life and
- 13:56life more abundantly. And do you know how I know that?
- 13:59Because I know God's will, which brings me to point to what God's
- 14:06will is. This is a short point, but a
- 14:10long study. Romans 218.
- 14:18It says you know what He wants, what He desires, you know what
- 14:23is right because you have been taught His law.
- 14:29You know what He wants, you know what He desires, you know what
- 14:34gives Him great pleasure because it's all being written out for
- 14:39you. In John 11, it says that the
- 14:47Word was with God and the Word we, we have students in the
- 14:52room. Well done.
- 14:56When we take God's word, it's it's the literal God speaking to
- 15:01us. When we bring God's word into
- 15:05prayer with him, it's literally inviting the person of God into
- 15:10the room. You are literally having a
- 15:12conversation with the life giving God.
- 15:17It's Him speaking to us. This is where deep intimacy with
- 15:23Jesus is developed. This is where we find out what
- 15:26He wants. He wasn't shy about it.
- 15:30He wrote it all down for us. And so if you're not sure what
- 15:33God's will is in any situation, just ask.
- 15:39If you're not sure how to find that, go and speak to one of the
- 15:42pastors or one of the leaders to help you find out what God has
- 15:45to say on specific subjects, right?
- 15:49Communicating through him in his Word.
- 15:51It brings intimacy, but it also brings authority and power.
- 15:58So .3 and this is a a longer point.
- 16:01I want to talk about the power in your will be done.
- 16:05OK, so we have established that God's will is not just
- 16:08everything that happens. I don't get to sit on a lounge,
- 16:12Neither does Pastor Mel, neither does Pastor Chris and Rich,
- 16:16neither to any of you and say ka, ka, Sarah, Sarah.
- 16:19Whatever will be will be God's will.
- 16:22No, we are invited to partner with God in what he desires.
- 16:28We get to partner with him and actively be involved in bringing
- 16:33about his purpose, in bringing about his desire, what brings
- 16:37him great pleasure. So in Romans 12/1 to two, I
- 16:43wanted to speak on this, which is a really powerful way to see
- 16:47God's will being brought about, it says.
- 16:50And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to
- 16:54give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you.
- 16:58Let them be a living and holy sacrifice.
- 17:03This kind he will find acceptable.
- 17:05Sorry. The kind he will find
- 17:07acceptable. This is truly the way to
- 17:09worship. Don't copy the behaviour and
- 17:12customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new
- 17:17person by changing the way you think.
- 17:20Then you will learn to know God's will, God's dilemma, God's
- 17:26desire for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
- 17:31Did you hear it in there? It was to present your body as a
- 17:38living sacrifice, allowing yourself to be transformed.
- 17:44When you place something on an altar, it doesn't actually
- 17:48belong to you anymore. It belongs to God.
- 17:53And there's a a picture of this. Can you give me my fire stick,
- 17:57please? This would have been so much
- 17:59more fun if Pastor Mel would have let me do a live
- 18:02demonstration. I wasn't allowed to.
- 18:05It's called submission. Anyway, we're going to come and
- 18:09have a look at these two pictures up here.
- 18:12It wasn't just a random pretty picture.
- 18:14There was purpose here. So here we have.
- 18:18Oh, no. I've touched it.
- 18:19I'm going to get all my clothes wet.
- 18:23Have you got a baby wipe? Yeah.
- 18:25All right. Here is the altar of sacrifice.
- 18:30This was a daily sacrifice. Did you hear in that verse
- 18:36before that the God's will was about being a living sacrifice?
- 18:42It's not a one moment. It's not a one moment where you
- 18:45give your life to Jesus and go, Jesus, I invite you into my
- 18:49heart. Thanks so much that you live
- 18:50there, walk out of the doors and never come back.
- 18:53It's not a single occurrence. It's a daily sacrifice.
- 18:58So here we've got the daily sacrifice and over here this is
- 19:03what's called the altar of incense.
- 19:05Now when you hear about incense in God's word, what does it
- 19:09remind you of? Incense aroma.
- 19:15Call it out prayer. I heard prayer.
- 19:19So at the incense, the altar of incense is daily prayer.
- 19:24The reason I've got a fire stick.
- 19:26So in the Bible it talks about this was actually lit by God
- 19:31himself. That's called holy fire.
- 19:38The holy fire was then to be taken from the daily sacrifice.
- 19:43Daily sacrifice, right? And used to light the altar of
- 19:51incense. Here's what I want to pull from
- 19:54this. I'm going to do an exchange
- 19:56here. Baby wipes, Baby wipes.
- 19:59They're so great. Thanks friend.
- 20:06If you need to find those scriptures as well, they're in
- 20:08Leviticus 1612 to 13, Exodus 37 to 10, and Leviticus 924.
- 20:15So what I want to pull from this daily sacrifice combined with
- 20:22intimate prayer, it carries holy fire.
- 20:29Your daily sacrifice combined with daily prayer carries holy
- 20:36fire. Holy fire is power.
- 20:41Holy fire is the power that sees people set free, sees people
- 20:46delivered, that brings salvation, that sees legs grow,
- 20:50and it's carried through daily sacrifice and daily prayer.
- 20:59It positions you in power and the enemy does not want you to
- 21:06understand the power that you have in laying things down.
- 21:12It's laying down your will and picking up God's will, what
- 21:17brings him pleasure, what he desires.
- 21:21It's a, it's laying down what we want and aligning it with what
- 21:26God wants. I, I just want to bring up a
- 21:31story in the Bible. It's in Numbers 22 and it's a
- 21:36man named Balaam, deeply wicked man.
- 21:40I'd say I'd have a conversation within heaven, but I don't think
- 21:43we're going to see this man in heaven.
- 21:44He was, he was not a nice guy. So we had the children of Israel
- 21:49and you had the King Balak and he was terrified that they were
- 21:52coming like, Oh no, the Israelites are coming.
- 21:54We've heard about this God and what he does.
- 21:56So he goes and he hires Balaam. He's basically the big fat witch
- 22:00doctor of the day. And he's got all of his, you
- 22:03know, he's wearing his things and his blood on his, on his
- 22:06chest. He's, he's got all of the powers
- 22:08of, of darkness and evil. And so the king, he's known
- 22:12amongst all of the kings of the region as being the guy that if
- 22:15he blesses someone there, if he curses someone, they're cursed.
- 22:19So what comes Balaam and, and the kings are like, right, curse
- 22:23Israel and Balaam, who's actually heard from God.
- 22:27Just because you hear from God doesn't make you a prophet of
- 22:29God. It actually made him a very
- 22:30disobedient and rebellious man. But he, he heard, he actually
- 22:40knew that he wasn't going to be able to curse.
- 22:41And it was very frustrating for him.
- 22:44And so whenever he opened out his mouth, out would come
- 22:47blessing instead of cursing. And so the king was like, come
- 22:52on, you know, like, try it here, do it here.
- 22:54And he's so irritated and frustrated because he's the guy
- 22:58hired to bring a curse. And with all of his powers of
- 23:01darkness and with every methodology that is accessed to,
- 23:05he can't get through. Let's pick up the story numbers
- 23:133115 to 16. This is what happened after.
- 23:20Have you allowed all of the women to live?
- 23:24They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and enticed
- 23:28Israel to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident so
- 23:32that a plague struck the Lord's people.
- 23:34Now this is interesting. Balaam lived in this deeply
- 23:39spiritual, volatile environment, but was unable to curse Israel.
- 23:45He was blocked, couldn't get through.
- 23:48So, frustrated at his inability to invoke a curse, he looked to
- 23:54one of the most powerful thing to walk planet Earth.
- 23:59He looked to God's people. He looked to God's people.
- 24:10He enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord through
- 24:14the Moabite woman and then brought a court, brought a curse
- 24:17on them that way. What was impossible to curse
- 24:23through extremely volatile spiritual means was brought
- 24:27about through a compromise of God's People understand that
- 24:34this is actually a negative story.
- 24:37But church, do you understand who you are?
- 24:41Do you understand the power that you actually possess?
- 24:46Because I promise you, the enemy does.
- 24:50And the enemy loves it when we are passive and unaware of the
- 24:57power that we carry every day. But we don't always recognize it
- 25:03because you know what it looks like for us.
- 25:07It's mundane. It's a daily sacrifice combined
- 25:12with daily prayer. It's mundane, but it carries
- 25:18power. If you could just imagine with
- 25:20me for a moment. Now look there, there is no
- 25:23condemnation in Christ. Whatever's on that table of
- 25:26showbread for you, God's mercy is at work in there.
- 25:30But I want to, I want to invite you into a moment of imagination
- 25:33for our region. Can you imagine if every family
- 25:38in our region, maybe for three generations, did these few
- 25:42things, got up in the morning and fed their kids, sent them to
- 25:48school, gave them a hug and told them that they loved them and
- 25:54stayed? If every family just went, I
- 26:00really don't like my spouse right now, but I'm just, I'm
- 26:03going to work through it. If every family in our region
- 26:06had done that for three generations, what would it?
- 26:09What would it look like? We don't understand the power in
- 26:16the mundane, in the everyday daily sacrifice, daily prayer.
- 26:21It carries holy fire, but we don't always recognize it
- 26:26because it's so mundane. And the thing about sacrifice is
- 26:32it's a sacrifice. It's usually the very opposite
- 26:37of what we want to do, right? It's the opposite of what we
- 26:45want to do, and it hurts. It's often the very thing that
- 26:52we're like, no, like study. Studied for 20 years.
- 26:57Lord, Are you sure? You said you wanted me to study.
- 26:59Yes, Rachel, I said I wanted you to study.
- 27:01But don't you understand? They make you reference.
- 27:04Where's the holy fire in that daily sacrifice?
- 27:12Laying it down with daily prayer.
- 27:15It positions you in power. It carries holy fire.
- 27:22Sometimes we want the the sparklers and the fireworks in
- 27:26in ministry. Let me Adam, God, show me the
- 27:28multitudes. I'm ready to see legs grow and
- 27:31God's like I'm so with you. Could you just maybe forgive
- 27:34your parents? Hang on a second.
- 27:38What? Daily laying it down.
- 27:43Have you said sorry to your spouse yet?
- 27:46No, I was right. I am right, ladies.
- 27:51I am a lady. So I'm going to just pick on you
- 27:53for a moment. Do you know how to say sorry?
- 27:59Does it come out of your mouth? Is it a normal part of your
- 28:03vocabulary? Is it a daily sacrifice?
- 28:07The words that you don't want to say, the words that are the
- 28:11struggle? I will say anything else, just
- 28:15not that word. It's the opposite often of the
- 28:20very thing that you want to do, but it positions you in power.
- 28:29Think of Daniel for a moment. Daniel was a man who was known
- 28:35for daily sacrifice and daily prayer.
- 28:39It says that he prayed 3 times a day.
- 28:43His life was a life of daily sacrifice.
- 28:47It was nothing for him to fast for years.
- 28:50All of the King's delicacies. It was nothing for him to show
- 28:55up to work again. But he was positioned in power.
- 29:02Those light mouths of the lion were closed.
- 29:07Dave. Sorry, Daniel.
- 29:08Did I say David? It's Daniel.
- 29:10Lived nearly 85 years. There's a lot of mundane in that
- 29:16story. Think about it.
- 29:19He served a wicked king. He probably got home from the
- 29:22lion's den and they're like, well, you've had a day off in
- 29:25the lion's den. Now you've got twice as much
- 29:26paperwork to do. It's mundane, daily showing up,
- 29:34doing I, I love to pray, right? I love to pray.
- 29:39I don't always feel like showing up and teaching people how to
- 29:43pray on a Monday night after working all day.
- 29:47Sometimes it's the very opposite of what I feel like doing.
- 29:51It's a daily decision to keep showing up, to keep laying down,
- 29:57to keep allowing Holy Spirit to press on those areas of your
- 30:00heart, to keep checking your attitudes, to keep aligning
- 30:04yourself back in submission, which is often the opposite of
- 30:07what you feel like doing. Just putting this out there.
- 30:11Submission isn't true submission until you're disagreeing with
- 30:14someone. Otherwise you're just going
- 30:15along with the flow. It's that moment where you hit,
- 30:18oh, I don't actually really like what you're.
- 30:20I don't even think I really believe what you're saying here.
- 30:22And then there's an aligning anyway.
- 30:24It's the opposite of what you want to do.
- 30:28It's laying it down. Daily sacrifice combined with
- 30:34daily prayer carries holy fire. It positions you for power.
- 30:43I will end with this with Stephen was a man full of the
- 30:46Holy Spirit, chosen and anointed to be apostle.
- 30:51To do what? Work with the dishes.
- 30:57He was anointed full of Holy Spirit because they needed
- 31:01someone to help distribute the food.
- 31:04He showed up daily, daily sacrifice, daily prayer.
- 31:12And as he was being a martyr and stones were being thrown at him
- 31:19and he was giving his literal life as a sacrifice, he comes
- 31:23out with this prayer and says Lord, don't hold this against
- 31:28them. Sacrifice, prayer, holy fire.
- 31:32Guess who was in the audience? Soul, it's where we get our
- 31:38great apostle Paul. God went OK Stephen, sometimes
- 31:44we miss the power and the authority that we walk in
- 31:48because it looks mundane. Pray only Lord, I need to read
- 31:54some more. I need to keep showing.
- 31:56You want me to go to work. You want me to love my children
- 32:01and my spouse? You want me to be that good
- 32:03friend? You want me to serve dishes?
- 32:05Really, Lord? Whatever he's pressing on, lay
- 32:10it down. It positions you in power.
- 32:17Your rights, your hurt, your attitudes, your control.
- 32:27What brings you pleasure, Lord? What is your will?
- 32:32What is your deep desire in this moment?
- 32:36Decision, outcome. Jesus.
- 32:46Jesus was the ultimate example, the ultimate example of
- 32:51sacrifice. It says in Galatians 1/4 that he
- 32:55gave himself to die for our sins.
- 32:57He did this so that we could be saved from the sinful world.
- 33:02And this is what God wanted to do.
- 33:06It's what God wanted to do. You might be here this morning
- 33:13and have heard this message. Some of you might have just come
- 33:17back. Like Alex was saying this
- 33:20morning. He wrestled with the with the
- 33:24sacrifice. So he left because it was easy.
- 33:29Some of you might have walked back in here this morning and
- 33:31going, no, I need to get my relationship with Jesus back.
- 33:36He was the one who first gave, he sacrificed everything.
- 33:39It's why we have free will, because the most important thing
- 33:43in the world to God is when we choose Him back.
