- 0:00Most people have had the experience.
- 0:04An individual has a dispute with a friend, a relative, a spouse.
- 0:09No resolution takes place. An attempt to convince or
- 0:13control the other person is met with resistance.
- 0:17There may be aggression or threats of violence, or a period
- 0:23of silent avoidance may result. This latter response is an
- 0:28example of what we might consider to be an individual
- 0:31going on strike in relation to another individual.
- 0:36This same process takes place within ourselves.
- 0:40We experience a desire of some type, possibly for a feeling of
- 0:45being wanted and supported, possibly for something like
- 0:49recognition or fame, possibly for wealth or power, sex or
- 0:55entertainment. It could be a desire for a
- 0:58specific type of food or drink, or a desire for an intoxicant.
- 1:03In order to experience the state of consciousness that
- 1:06accompanies the drug, whatever it might be, we are confronted
- 1:12each moment with a choice. We can follow the impulse and
- 1:17fulfill the desire. Afterwards, we may feel satiated
- 1:22for a time, and the vital nature is willing to cooperate and
- 1:26participate in actions that the mind and will or the psychic
- 1:31aspiration would like to see accomplished.
- 1:35We may determine that carrying out the impulse, however, is not
- 1:39something we would like to do. So we rebuff the vital nature
- 1:44and ask it one way or the other to desist from that desire and
- 1:50to carry out the mind's will or other action that speaks to our
- 1:55deeper aspirations. At this moment we find that the
- 2:00vital can either intensify its insistence on its desire, or
- 2:05else if it is not successful, it may simply withdraw energy and
- 2:10begin to sulk, to avoid engagement and to feel
- 2:14depressed, discouraged or dismissed.
- 2:19At that moment there is either a struggle to face off against the
- 2:23desire of the vital, or else there is a period of feeling
- 2:28lost, dispersed, distracted, seeking for some form of
- 2:33diversion or psychological oblivion, unable to accomplish
- 2:38anything. Finding a way to tame the vital
- 2:42nature is one of the serious challenges faced by spiritual
- 2:46aspirants throughout the world. Avoidance of opportunity has
- 2:51shown to be a failed approach as it does not solve the problem.
- 2:56Indulgence, the satisfying of the desire, is also a failed
- 3:01approach as desire tends to burn hotter the more fuel it is
- 3:06provided. The question then arises whether
- 3:10there is another way, such as, can the vital nature be
- 3:15educated, raised up and its focus upgraded to support the
- 3:20higher aspiration of the being and find its fulfillment there
- 3:25instead of in its heretofore normal pursuits and
- 3:28satisfactions? The mother writes quote.
- 3:34Therefore it depends on which side it turns.
- 3:38And I tell you it has a very strong habit of going on strike.
- 3:43That is its most powerful weapon.
- 3:46Ah, you're not doing what I want.
- 3:48Well, I'm not going to move. I shall sham dead.
- 3:54And it does that for the least reason.
- 3:57It has a very bad character. It is very touchy and it is very
- 4:02spiteful. Yes, it is very ill nature, for
- 4:07I believe it is very conscious of its power, and it feels
- 4:11clearly that if it gives itself wholly, there is nothing that
- 4:16will resist the momentum of its force.
- 4:19And like all people who have a weight in the balance, the vital
- 4:23also bargains. I shall give you my energy, but
- 4:28you must do what I want. If you do not give me what I ask
- 4:32for, well, I withdraw my energy, and you will be flat as a
- 4:37pancake. And it is true, it happens like
- 4:42that. End Quote reference Sri
