So if there's certain topics you want us to discuss, write it. It's October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Right.
• 2:15
If you don't know, Grandma Gail is a survivor. What do you think Grandma got you through that time? When was this
• 2:23
Speaker 4: time? Well, actually discovered my breast cancer right after my sixtieth birthday. What gets you through it is your family and your support system around you and of course the doctors, who very often help. But I would just throw out to the audience, you must self examine, which is what I did and I found it myself, I didn't find it through a screening and that's very important. You know your own breasts, the people who have large breasts, small breasts, it doesn't really matter and men as well.
• 3:00
You really need to do a little self exam.
• 3:03
Speaker 3: And look up online how to do a self exam.
• 3:05
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not very difficult and if you feel something that is not supposed to be there, go and have it screened and looked at. And I would definitely say everybody, everybody should have a mammography after the age of 40. It's just important, even if you, you know, just to have a baseline. Don't worry about it, you'll have a fabulous life with it, and you'll grow with it and you'll have a whole new community of friends around it, but really it's very important to be aware of self examining and going to a doctor to just check it out.
• 3:42
Speaker 3: When you say new community of friends, where is that coming from?
• 3:45
Speaker 4: Well it comes from other survivors and other people going through the same process.
• 3:49
Speaker 3: So there's support groups.
• 3:49
Speaker 4: And support groups, oh, every hospital has support groups and I know after I had completed my course, I was always there for people and I had loads of people used to call me and ask me how I fared and what my experience was and my experience was not particularly a wonderful one, So you really have to, you know, listen and then give advice to others so that they can maybe have a better, time of it than you had.
• 4:21
Speaker 3: Yeah, was gonna ask about that, like if you have, if people have friends or family with cancer who are listening, what do you say to somebody?
• 4:30
Speaker 4: You say, you know, keep an upper lip, you're going to get through it, and this is the one cancer that really, one of several, but that is really you can live a wonderful life after you've done your treatment, whatever it may be. I'm twenty three years, yay. But you know what, you have to have people around you who support you and it's a wonderful thing.
• 4:58
Speaker 3: I was gonna say, twenty three years, so I was six, because I was wondering, I was trying to
• 5:03
Speaker 4: like I got it right after my grandson was born. Right, so sex. Shortly after. I always know how many years I had it because I always think about him. Almost years.
• 5:15
And he was actually made, you know, it's always so interesting, I don't like to talk about this so much, but I used to lie in bed after my chemo sessions and he would lie as a little tiny baby, he would come into bed and just lie there and it was the comfort of having new life, into an illness that you were hoping to fight and we did and we fought it and I conquered it with a lot of other outside help. So you need your support system around you.
• 5:45
Speaker 3: Because I was trying to remember, don't even remember, like now I know that obviously that you went through this, but I was not brought into that conversation. I don't think Are you meant to bring kids?
• 5:55
Speaker 4: No, I don't think so. I don't think little six to 10, by the time you're 13, 12, 13 year olds, yes, yes, but little children don't understand, they just know Grandma or Grandpa are not feeling well. And the comfort of you coming over and reading a book to your grandma or your grandfather or holding a hand or tell them what you're doing in school is really the uplifting thing that people who have an issue really would like to hear. No one wants to dwell on the illness itself.
• 6:27
Speaker 3: Right, so maybe parents of little kids, if their parents have cancer, they should bring them over.
• 6:34
Speaker 4: Absolutely, absolutely. That's thing. Yeah, I think family is very important during that time.
• 6:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, also the health, the science, I mean, is probably so much better now.
• 6:44
Speaker 4: I think it's better, I think it's better, and I think people are much more aware that they must really stay on top of it, but it's been going on for a very long. Breast cancer's been around a long time. Cancer's been around a long time. We've spent billions and trillions of dollars on cancer. It's a virus that affects you, each person differently and we don't know how to stop it but they're getting closer to treating several of them.
• 7:11
  Well, also
• 7:12
Speaker 3: a lot of people who get cancer or runs in their family is because they have the BRCA gene and now with IVF, if you are trying to have a baby, you can actually take that out if you do it Yes, through prior to your treatment. Right. Yeah. Or prior to getting pregnant, I mean if you take it out of that embryo or however it works, clearly I'm
• 7:37
Speaker 4: honestly Yes, but that's science. I mean, has progressed tremendously since then and it's great, especially great if now they can discover it if you have it in your family. I didn't have it in my family, so it was atypical for me. But if you know your family seems to have that particular form of cancer, it makes you more aware and you certainly have to go and make sure that you don't have the gene.
• 8:07
Speaker 3: Any charity you support? Well, just did breast
• 8:11
Speaker 4: cancer. Nancy Brinker had a one, the Susan Coleman used to be very, I was always involved in that, we always did the walk. But there's anything that you give to or hospital, to to your hospital that has breast cancer sites, they all collect now, they all are doing things for their patients and especially for the people who can't afford or who don't have a family of support. There's so many support groups within the institutions themselves and people should avail themselves of it.
• 8:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, I was gonna say the self care of it all, support groups, therapy, everyone talks
• 8:57
Speaker 4: to Everyone your talks to your doctor, but there are so many support systems
• 9:01
Speaker 3: out there. Sometimes I forget you're not a doctor, lawyer,
• 9:04
  Speaker 1: Right, well
• 9:05
Speaker 3: we're call giving a Right, a bunch of advice
• 9:10
Speaker 4: from this point of view, I would just say, be aware, not to worry, there's so much good stuff out there that will help overcome the illness.
• 9:21
Speaker 3: Great message. One more thing, we are recording today on October 7, this will come out a few days after, but anything you wanna say
• 9:35
Speaker 4: on, you know, it's been two I'm hoping President Trump by the end of the week will have some form of agreement so that the hostages will finally see freedom. That's the most important thing for everyone, everyone in the world, for humanity itself to have these people released. And we had one of the hostages at our service last week for the New Year. In our synagogue. In our synagogue.
• 10:04
And he also spoke in others and he spoke in Central Park because it's very important to get the message out. We cannot forget, there's still 20, unfortunately, only 20 who are still alive.
• 10:16
  Speaker 3: Okay, lighter note.
• 10:17
Speaker 4: Oh, yes. We need to go to a lighter note, Kim.
• 10:20
Speaker 3: I didn't see you this weekend. Did you do anything fun?
• 10:24
Speaker 4: I did nothing fun. It was the most First of you can see from what I'm wearing. Today is the last day
• 10:30
Speaker 3: There's little crumb here. Crumb. Had a little Danish before.
• 10:34
Speaker 4: So that's the crumb. It's the last day of actually 80 degrees in New York. I've never seen a September and basic beginning of October was nicer than the summer. But tomorrow it's gonna change, the rain is coming in tonight and we're gonna get fall. So, did nothing, I just walked around the city, it was beautiful, had dinner out and nothing special and it was just very nice.
• 11:01
It's chilled. It's a beautiful time of the year to be in New York. It's a beautiful time of the year to be anywhere, but the fall is always very, very pretty and I actually went up to Woodbury Commons, which is an outlet with my son
• 11:16
Speaker 3: Your favorite activity. Daughter-in-law.
• 11:17
Speaker 4: Yeah, but it was very interesting. It used to be, at least I thought it was, off prices. You know, they used to have all these fabulous designer stores, but they were off price. Now What do mean off price? Well, was discounted.
• 11:31
Yeah. I mean, they weren't necessarily from this season. They could have been from the season before, but who cares if you're buying a t shirt or a nightgown or a down coat, it doesn't matter from one season to the other, to me it all looks the same. But I started going to each store and I said, You know, this is exactly what I saw. Actually, remember the place we went downtown last week that you bought those pretty cashmere?
• 11:58
  Me and M. No, Bing.
• 12:01
Speaker 3: Oh, I mean Bing.
• 12:02
Speaker 4: Right. Yeah. They have a beautiful store there. And the same exact jacket that I tried on downtown in blue was there. So I said to the lady, What's going on here?
• 12:14
I thought these were discounted. She said, Well now, it's not all discounted. Some stuff is the new lines and then we have the other side of the store is discounted from a season pass. And I went into certain other stores and they all seem to be gearing it. There are some new, but very little, and then some old.
• 12:35
And then a store like Ralph Lauren, it's all new.
• 12:38
Speaker 3: I was under the impression that outlet stores are basically copies of what is currently in the store, but they are made in a, with not as nice fabrics.
• 12:50
Speaker 4: I don't, but I think that's the way we used to think. It doesn't happen that way anymore. It's not at all different fabrics. I think it's the same stuff and I have to tell you the crowds, because it was such a beautiful day on, Saturday, the crowds were immense, they come in and buy busloads. I really think that families came, like if you're going in, you have three children and two adults, you're going into a place like The Gap or whatever, they're buying just because it's convenient.
• 13:20
You can go from The Gap to the sneaker store, to the underwear store to every single thing is all within this community up there. It's terrific. I would just go pre school. It's a mall. It's just like a mall, only more stores than a mall.
• 13:35
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 13:36
Speaker 4: Because it goes over. Then we went to the food court. Can't even tell you, I had Haagen Dazs Sunday which was so delicious, I couldn't get over.
• 13:44
  Speaker 3: That was your
• 13:44
Speaker 4: lunch? No, it was a little snack. I was exhausted from all the walking. Because you do a lot
• 13:50
  Speaker 3: of walking.
• 13:50
Speaker 4: And they have a little train but the train only goes one way. So, stopped the conductor. I said, I wanna go on the train. That's what your uncle said, What do you think? You're in Disney World?
• 14:03
I said, But I wanna go the other way. He says, We don't go that way. They go from left to right, not from right to east. It was a one way trip.
• 14:11
  Speaker 3: It's like a Torah
• 14:12
Speaker 4: of trains. Exactly, exactly. It was backwards. Anyway, it was fun and I do think there were loads The thing, the message is, if you're not I was looking for something specific. If you're not Charlotte, your cousin wanted a particular coat.
• 14:30
If you want a particular color in a coat, then forget it. But if you want that designer and you'll take black or you'll take blue you'll take You're just brown, Then you can find. Then you can get it. And there is a certain, well the tax I think is a little different and there was like a tiny 10% discount. But if you want a specific color and only that, don't even waste your time.
• 14:54
Yeah. Because it does take an hour and fifteen minutes to go from the city.
• 14:57
Speaker 3: Interesting. See, that to me, like in a mall, for some reason, it's probably because It's not a mall.
• 15:04
Speaker 4: Mall is different. A mall is inside. This is an outdoor mall. An outdoor For shopping
• 15:10
Speaker 3: some reason, maybe it's because I grew up in the city, but like takes the pleasure of shopping away for me. Like, I to see like coffee shops and then like other things in between my stores. And then I want to like go searching and I want the vibe of the neighborhood. Yeah, but
• 15:26
Speaker 4: I think if you're a family or if you've got a lot of kids and you want to do one stop shopping,
• 15:31
Speaker 3: this is you're going efficiency, not for like the love of the activity.
• 15:35
Speaker 4: And the stores were beautiful by the way. This was the other thing that shocked me. They had a Ralph Lauren men's women's children housewares, so that's four stores and they were done exactly the way the boutiques in New York are done. There was a beautiful Christian Dior boutique. There was a Prada boutique.
• 15:52
And the other thing is all there were lines, but only at the stores that sell bags, which was very interesting. Okay. Like, they had the lines, the young people were all online for Prada, they were all online for Saint Laurent. The families are going into the other stores and they were giving discounts, they were giving a coupon out at Ralph Lauren, if you bought one store, you could use it in the other store.
• 16:17
Speaker 3: You could a podcast. Do it. I feel like you were having
• 16:21
Speaker 4: a good I actually enjoyed it. Okay, I actually, I spent a few hours there.
• 16:25
  Speaker 3: Okay, fun.
• 16:26
Speaker 4: And the Haagen Dazs was delicious. Monka chip, perfect.
• 16:29
Speaker 3: Yeah. It is really like a great ice cream brand. It is. Nothing rivals. No.
• 16:38
I was in the Hamptons over the weekend. I went to the Hampton Film Festival, which was fun.
• 16:43
Speaker 4: I saw you, you were interviewing a lot of people.
• 16:45
Speaker 3: Well, went into the weekend not thinking I was doing any of that. Like, I thought I was just going to the film festival. And then I figured, why not message them, say I'm going and that I could do coverage for our social channel. And they were more than happy to have me there and it was like a tiny little carpet and not a ton of press, so I don't know why more people don't do that, but Well,
• 17:08
Speaker 4: think it's a small festival too.
• 17:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, no, but the stars were big, like if people didn't see on social media, I interviewed Sydney Sweeney, Olsen was there, like there were a lot of big stars,
• 17:22
Speaker 4: does that compare to the one at Lincoln Center in size?
• 17:26
Speaker 3: Oh, the New York Film Festival? Yeah. The New York Film Festival was much bigger.
• 17:29
Speaker 4: Went that much on day. That's what I would've thought because you have to go to the, people who are in the, I mean, there's no place to stay in the Hamptons, so that's really a long trip for people who don't have places or residences out there.
• 17:43
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 17:43
Speaker 4: That would be the difference, I would think.
• 17:45
Speaker 3: I think you're really going if you are involved in Exactly, the I think so too. Or have a house the handprint.
• 17:51
Speaker 4: Or have a house or a friend who has rooms that you can stay at.
• 17:55
Speaker 3: Right, I'm not sure, or other people, think, I didn't speak to that many people, but maybe people coming from like other parts of Long Island. Right. But I was so nervous to do this interview because the first night I was like, okay, I'm gonna set up my stuff, but I don't have like usually we have Eliza or someone from our team like come with us for these kind of things.
• 18:15
Speaker 4: Have to set up your own camera.
• 18:16
Speaker 3: I'm like, my god, have set up my own camera. How difficult my life is. And it just when you are also thinking about talking to talent and prepping, and then it's like I'm fumbling with all this stuff. I feel like I it was a little nerve racking. And of course, I feel like so unprofessional, but mom and dad are like standing on the sideline and they're like watching and they're
• 18:36
Speaker 4: like, you're fine. Were great.
• 18:38
Speaker 3: Well, yes, that it was nice that they were helpful. I was like, mom, if for some reason someone's like moves the camera, like, sure it's all good. She has no idea anyway. She's just useless. But it was so like nice to have them.
• 18:53
So I didn't feel totally alone in it because it is scary. Obviously, usually I have you. So it's like I always have a family member there. But the first night, I was like, okay, I really want Elizabeth Olsen. So I'm waiting.
• 19:06
She gets her picture taken, and then her publicist is like, she's not doing interviews. Like, why do you even come?
• 19:11
Speaker 4: Well, that's the whole thing. A lot of these these stars are too full of themselves, whereas some of the stars who we all know are always so gracious and give of their time. And listen, they are, they're being
• 19:23
Speaker 3: They're entitled, by the way. Like, if I was in her position, I would also be choosy with what
• 19:27
Speaker 4: inner You know what? At this point, she's in a local, it's a small local They film should have been more gracious, but all right, it doesn't matter.
• 19:36
Speaker 3: It's what it is. So then the next night, I'm like, I'll just, I'll go again. I'll try for Sydney Sweeney, but I'm expecting I'm not getting her. Right. You know?
• 19:42
Because she's, I think, bigger Exactly. So, I'm like, she comes on, Hi, everyone. Sweet.
• 19:50
Speaker 4: Well, that's good be. But that's wonderful. That's a great thing.
• 19:52
Speaker 3: And she's like, she's a year younger than me. So I felt like, Okay, this is like a peer. And I was just nervous, like I don't even think I really introduced myself, I kinda just went into the questions. There were a few learning curves, but I'm like, I thought it was a really good combo that
• 20:07
Speaker 4: I I I saw saw it on the Instagram. I thought it was very good, I enjoyed it. Yeah, thank you. I thought the whole thing was good. And what's fun is, you see, for people who are listening or watching, these are things that are all over the city and I'm sure in many cities across America and you should go to them because films, and these are films that are not out yet, they're all done by, a lot of them by new directors, new writers, new producers, and they need a break.
• 20:38
And I think it's very important for the arts to- Support the arts. Keep film alive, kids. Well, it's true, it's true. And even if it's a short film, which eventually ends up on Netflix, I'll tell you the truth, there's no point, you know that it's gonna come.
• 20:55
Speaker 3: Some of them are already bought by streamers or whatever.
• 20:59
Speaker 4: Which is very important to them, otherwise they can't make a living. I mean, they're not doing this as a charity.
• 21:04
Speaker 3: I think I have to look into exactly how the film festival circuit works cause I'm still a little confused. But I think typically like a production company like makes this film right and then they are hoping by entering the festival that a yeah, like streamer or whatever
• 21:22
Speaker 4: it is will want to Exactly. Pick So, think it's important though for everyone in their local community, when one of these festivals happen, just go see the films, go see whatever it is. And it broadens your mind. I'm gonna do it this weekend. I'm sure the movies I'm gonna see are gonna be awful.
• 21:41
They always put the best movie the first night and the last night of the festival. The one out in the island where Kim was talking runs for a span of almost two and a half weeks.
• 21:52
Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, so Hampton Film Festival, the first night, the opening film was actually this film Eternity, the Elizabeth Olsen one and Miles Teller, and it was actually really cute. Okay. It's an A24 film and it's about basically when you die, then you have to pick where you wanna spend eternity. Or who with.
• 22:10
And kind of in this middle ground until you pick it. I liked it. Okay. And then the Sydney Sweeney movie was Christie, which is about a real boxer from the nineties of women female boxer and really, like, sad intense story. I don't wanna give too much away.
• 22:31
And then New York Film Festival, when I went on Sunday, was Ben Stiller's new documentary about his parents, which will be
• 22:38
Speaker 4: Jerry Stiller, who I thought was just the funniest guy, if you remember him from Seinfeld, he was the father.
• 22:43
Speaker 3: Yeah. And that'll be on Apple.
• 22:46
Speaker 4: Yeah, well, naturally. Those personalities always manage to get them on the channel so that everybody can see them on streaming. Mhmm. Alright.
• 22:59
Speaker 3: So we've been going through like our Ask Grandma Anything questions. There's a lot of questions about budgeting and how expensive it is to live in New York City with dating and also going out with friends. That's true. Let's go through some of the specific questions people wrote. So some said they're in their mid to late twenties and on their parents' credit card.
• 23:23
Speaker 4: Should I be concerned? Someone's underwriting it or you have to leave the city. It's a very sad reality. So, if your parents are generous and are letting you use a credit card, do it mindfully. I wouldn't use it like going out and go to lavish things, but if you need to use it perhaps just for a dinner occasionally and your parents say that's fine, it's fine.
• 23:49
But I also think you might have to readjust, where you're living. Not everybody, it's like not everybody has to go to college. See, that was the theory we used to have twenty years ago. I'm gonna put my 2¢ in. Vocational schools are very good.
• 24:04
We need painters, we need carpenters, we need electricians. We don't need professors who don't know what they're talking about really half the time. So I think we have to rethink with the formation of AI and all these other leaps in technology that are happening now, New York is not for everyone. New York City is not for everyone. They are wonderful suburbs.
• 24:27
Out further out if you go out from the city that are more affordable and people do it. Listen, when I was married, none of the friends I had except for two couples stayed in New York because as soon as they had children, they had to move to the suburbs, they couldn't afford it. And there's nothing, you know, that was in the early 60s, so nothing is, it hasn't changed, it's still, all these big cities are very expensive to live. It's LA, it's, well, San Francisco, I don't know anybody wants to live there anymore. But there are other cities in Miami, they're all very Harsh.
• 25:01
Well, I am being harsh because when you see what's going on with breaking laws and not following rules, that's gonna be my new format now, people have to start following rules. Rules are not just made for one or two people. We make rules for everybody and they should be followed. If you don't want to, then you know what, Go somewhere else, go somewhere where it doesn't matter. I don't know where you're gonna go.
• 25:28
Speaker 3: Like if you have a job in New York City and you're a young person, like I don't think the answer is always like leave the city.
• 25:33
Speaker 4: Well, know where we went, Kim? Remember where we went for the makeup thing? Hoboken is very affordable for young people
• 25:41
Speaker 3: to There's actually like some expensive places there
• 25:44
Speaker 4: too, yeah. There are loads of places within commuting distance of New York that you can live much cheaper than living in Manhattan. And I think those communities are gonna get even more popular as prices and inflation goes up.
• 26:00
Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, let's say like, it's not that you can't afford New York, but there's things like, it's hard to navigate what to spend your money on sometimes But you have to budget. With friends. It just about being mindful about like, I'm not gonna go to a fancy dinner Friday, Saturday. Right, go to
• 26:20
Speaker 4: a pizza place, which a pizza place now costs $50 Or a hamburger. Daddy, Poppy and I had a hamburger last night at J. G. Melons and you have to pay cash and it's like $30 a hamburger. Yeah, that's crazy.
• 26:36
It's a lot of money. Yeah. And that, you know, so I think you have to be mindful. You have to know in your budget what you can afford. You have to pay your rent and then you have to have food in your house.
• 26:49
But you do not have to have two tequila drinks on a Friday night. You can say, Listen, that doesn't go in the budget. And unfortunately, movies have gotten so expensive. All that entertainment where we used to go to in the 60s and 70s is now priced out. A ticket to a movie theater is over $20 So I think people have to now budget where they wanna go and what they wanna spend their money on.
• 27:16
There are lots of things you can do in the city for free, by the way. You can go into a museum for minimal cost and many of them are free, the Met is free, Some of them do charge a certain amount. You can take a walk on the High Line, which Kimmy and I discuss all the time, especially this time of the year. Go to Central Park, take a picnic, make a sandwich from your apartment and bring it with a bottle of wine that you might have in your apartment. You know, make things fun and creative within your budget.
• 27:47
Speaker 3: Yeah, like the next question is the best way to handle going out with a group of 15 where some drinks a lot and then some people don't drink a
• 27:55
Speaker 4: It's a hard thing because we've had that, I've had that on trips I've been on.
• 27:59
Speaker 3: Because everyone just throws their card in the center to split it evenly, but then it wasn't even whatever. It wasn't even easy. If some people are on a budget and some people aren't.
• 28:07
Speaker 4: This is part of life. You tend to seek out those, even though they could be very good friends, but if they can't afford it, they have to know, you know what, I'm gonna skip it. It's like there were articles which we did last spring about these weddings and these bachelorette parties and bachelor parties. If things are $10,000 to $15,000 and you can't afford it, you shouldn't be borrowing money either from your bank account, a banker, your mother, your grandmother to go on those things. If you can't do it, you know, within your budget, then those things have to, you say, you know, sorry, I just can't go.
• 28:47
I love you. I'm thinking of you and I hope you have fun, but I can't do it. And the same thing with the drinks. If you know you've got a group, they're gonna go out and all have six, seven drinks apiece, which are $20 or $30 a drink, and you are on a limited budget, you have to say, You know what, guys? I'll have to pass tonight.
• 29:05
Speaker 3: Would it be crazy to go and say like, Can we all just pay for what we got?
• 29:11
Speaker 4: Well, that's what we do when we're on a trip. Okay. We do that now. Well, I haven't gone on a
• 29:16
  Speaker 3: trip because
• 29:18
Speaker 4: some of the girls like two and three glasses of wine and I drink a ginger ale. So, you know, why should I pay their wine bill? So, we have asked them to put their credit card in, but it's very difficult. It's kind of weird. It's like, know, when you're younger, it's pretty hard to do it.
• 29:33
Speaker 3: Yeah, think if I went out with a group of like six or whatever it was and everyone was like, Wanna all split? And then one person was like, Well, you ate more than me or that Well, would be
• 29:43
Speaker 4: that used to be a movie, Kim. What? With Jack Nicholson, that they split the egg salad, they divided up the bill and he said, I only had the egg salad.
• 29:54
Speaker 3: Kinda faintly, I have to look up what that was. But yeah, I feel like
• 29:59
Speaker 4: also It's hard, it's hard. That's why you tend to be friendly with people who can do the same things as you.
• 30:04
Speaker 3: But I was gonna say, I don't think it necessarily has to be dropped that friend as much as like you have different friends for different activities. Exactly. Like, if the friend, like, you there's friends you go out with and then there's friends, like, let's say someone spends a ton of money, you know that going to dinner with them is gonna break the bank. Like, do take a walk with them on a Saturday during the day instead, or whatever the activity is.
• 30:26
Speaker 4: Exactly. I think you to really make up, but you're not a two year old anymore, you're an adult living and making a living on your own and going to a job. And you have to realize what you can and cannot afford. Not everybody could do the same thing. And there's nothing wrong with saying, Listen, I can't do that.
• 30:44
Speaker 3: Last question, someone said, What restaurants to take young adult children that are cool but also affordable? I thought of a few, I think. Probably
• 30:54
Speaker 4: some sushi places, but
• 30:55
Speaker 3: I Wait, sushi's the most expensive.
• 30:57
Speaker 4: Is it? Oh, I I mean,
• 30:58
Speaker 3: there are affordable sushi places.
• 31:00
Speaker 4: Well, what about going to Chinatown, which is not expensive?
• 31:03
Speaker 3: I don't go enough to have recommendations.
• 31:04
Speaker 4: I don't have recommendations either, but that is a fun you're
• 31:07
Speaker 3: about, then you do feel like it's something interesting. Right. I feel like American Bar, like, is in the middle, Rosemary's, and then, like, pizza places like Ruby Rosa and Amazon Grove, or John's. John's is a Those are all really, like, cool places that you're gonna, like, funky crowd or, like, you know, chic crowd, but it's pizza. So if you get a one pizza for the table and, a salad, whatever, I feel like it's fine.
• 31:34
Twelve chairs and Motec are two really good, like, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern restaurants that I like that feel affordable. Those are my racks.
• 31:46
Speaker 4: Well, I'm sure that when you look online now, everybody's got their restaurants all online. They have prices, you know, categories like goes from $20 to $40 or something like that and make those sites available to you and really look because there are lots of opportunities for different types of places. You know, we're sort of stuck in the ones we like, but there are loads
• 32:10
Speaker 3: of out chat GBT.
• 32:11
Speaker 4: Exactly. Ask them for everything.
• 32:18
Speaker 3: Quickly, the Grandma Report, the article of the week that we were going to do is actually how to find love when dating has gotten so expensive. And I was wondering if you think like with dating, do you think guys should be more selective with who they're choosing to go out with knowing that they're gonna have to pay for a drink for two people? Like, should you not go on a ton of dates or should you just stick to cheaper dates like a walking date or whatever it is?
• 32:45
Speaker 4: First of all, I don't think the girl wants to spend the whole evening, the fellow in many cases. So I think a first date could be a very casual kind of setting. And then if you like each other, and it also depends if they can afford it. If a fellow is making a good living and not worrying about the budget, then he has a right to go wherever, you know, but if he's not and it's a very costly night, no matter how you figure it out, then don't do it. Go just for a drink and meet somebody at a bar.
• 33:17
There are loads of them around or go for pizza. I mean, that's still affordable. Not cheap, but it's affordable.
• 33:25
Speaker 3: Okay. Let's do a quick round of the drama club.

• 34:13
Speaker 3: Taylor Swift has a new album, The Life of a Showgirl. Grandma People. So,
• 34:17
Speaker 4: I'm so sick of Taylor Swift.
• 34:18
Speaker 3: People, I'm not a Swiftie, neither are you. People stay up all night and It's have these listening wonderful. And they listen to the full album and they all talk about it online. Thing is, there's a lot of mixed emotions about it online. And I feel like because she has so many fans, every album is gonna have haters and gonna have people who love it.
• 34:41
But what I wanted to ask is people are saying like, she has a song where she, you know, she's talking about love, her relationship with Travis, and comparing it to like the fate of Ophelia. So they're like, he saved me from drowning kind of thing.
• 34:56
  Speaker 4: Oh, very nice.
• 34:57
Speaker 3: So you're saying it's very nice. A lot of people are like, that's anti feminist, that you needed a man to save you
• 35:02
Speaker 4: You the need a man. I don't care anti feminist or feminist. You need a man and you need a woman to have a love story.
• 35:12
Speaker 3: So Or a man that's and a man or a woman and
• 35:14
Speaker 4: a woman. Whatever floats your boat, but you need a partner. So, you know, I think you're reading too much into a woman who's writing these songs.
• 35:23
Speaker 3: She's always written about relationships. Exactly,
• 35:25
Speaker 4: exactly. And she's an entertainer. Lucky her, she's making billions of dollars. And it'll be very interesting. And this, have no idea, I'm not a fan, I don't care.
• 35:38
I wish them both well. It's a very hard thing for this guy.
• 35:43
Speaker 3: No, but he is performing in his own way in stadiums.
• 35:47
Speaker 4: But not like her. So, mean, he's certainly a very accomplished football player, but who could be like her? And will his career, which is soon to end in the form it's been in, and he might go on to something else in that same area, but all of a sudden, you're Mrs. Taylor Swift or Mr. Taylor Swift.
• 36:09
Speaker 3: But you don't marry Taylor Swift if you don't like that.
• 36:12
Speaker 4: Yeah, well, but most of these marriages don't work. We've seen it now with all these stars.
• 36:17
Speaker 3: It does for sure.
• 36:18
Speaker 4: I hope it does. It's a lovely story. We just saw the breakup of Nicole Kidman and what's his name? Oh my gosh. Or the fellow from the rock singer,
• 36:30
Speaker 3: a play. Oh, Keith Urban.
• 36:32
Speaker 4: Keith Urban. Yeah. And that was a story, a love story, a love story. And then all of a sudden he says he was sick of listening to her success and nobody was
• 36:39
Speaker 3: Is that what he said?
• 36:40
  Speaker 4: Yeah, he
• 36:40
Speaker 3: was He's an incredibly immature person, Jesus.
• 36:43
Speaker 4: He wanted something That's a a bad history. I know, Kim, but it's life. It's life.
• 36:51
  Speaker 3: Well, she's
• 36:51
Speaker 4: probably happy she doesn't have to be. I don't think she's happy. I think she was very sad she was trying to keep it together. She has two children with him.
• 36:58
Speaker 3: Yeah, mean, not happy, but I'm saying like that's a weird fight.
• 37:00
  Speaker 4: It's very hard.
• 37:01
Speaker 3: I really hope that like because she's a successful person that would not turn her husband off and that would No, make sounds you like more into well I
• 37:10
Speaker 4: don't think they get more into you. I think they have their own egos. I wanna send this out. Men have egos and women have egos. Men have always had the larger ego, in most cases.
• 37:24
And that's part of their makeup. And for women who think that it's fiftyfifty, I have to tell you, you're gonna be sadly disillusioned. It's never really fiftyfifty.
• 37:33
Speaker 3: I completely disagree. And I can look at my own relationship, I think it's a perfect example. I think that we both are rooting for each other.
• 37:40
Speaker 4: Rooting, yes. But if one becomes so successful and one doesn't, there's usually some kind of feeling of failure. It's not And I hope, listen, I'm not saying that you don't love each other the same and respect each other, but when one is very, very up and one is very, very down, there's just natural sadness and the relationship suffers.
• 38:07
Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if it's in men's makeup to be that way as much as it is like societally how they have been.
• 38:13
Speaker 4: Well, men have always been hunters, so I think that's part of the male.
• 38:17
Speaker 3: But hunters isn't an ego thing.
• 38:19
Speaker 4: Hunters are always the alphas.
• 38:22
  Speaker 3: I don't know, I think times
• 38:24
Speaker 4: I don't know anybody, well times really aren't changing. I just think some of the women think they're changing until they're in the relationship.
• 38:30
Speaker 3: I think if you look at your time versus now, it has changed.
• 38:33
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I'm not sure for the better.
• 38:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, this is the discussion we have. One more quick one, Masquerade is this new like Broadway thing that remember Grandma Lean told us at lunch, or sorry, at breakfast?
• 38:47
  Speaker 4: Right, right, yes.
• 38:48
Speaker 3: It's like a Phantom of the Opera. Right, at that theater doing Right, yeah. Just opened, you have to like, of go from room to room, you go in a costume, kind of like sleep no more. I don't know, what do think of that?
• 39:00
Speaker 4: I think it could be fun, but it has to be with people that get into that, that like that. They have to want to get dressed up. If I had to dress up your grandfather or I don't like it either, we'd having nervous, it would take us so much time and not worth it once we got there. But I think if people like doing that, it could be a hoot and it's something different.
• 39:19
Speaker 3: Yeah, why that though instead of a regular Broadway show just feels different and like more interactive. And
• 39:24
  Speaker 4: think it's a smaller venue. Don't think it's in a big think
• 39:27
Speaker 3: it's big. Really? No, it's huge. Walk from room to room. Alright.
• 39:31
  It's like a warehouse.
• 39:32
Speaker 4: Oh, I didn't mean, I thought it was that little theater on 5th Street.
• 39:35
Speaker 3: Actually, am I wrong?
• 39:35
  Speaker 4: I don't know.
• 39:37
Speaker 3: I don't know, but another fun thing.
• 39:38
Speaker 4: Well, I do think it's a fun thing. Yeah.
• 39:40
Speaker 3: Okay everyone, another great episode of Excuse My Grandma. Follow us on social media, Excuse My Grandma. My personal one is Kimmerstein. Remember to rate and review the show.
