The Cyrus Cylinder and the Myth of Human Rights
Episode 228 examines the famous Cyrus Cylinder, a clay artifact often hailed as the first charter of human rights. We explore its actual contents in Old Persian cuneiform, contrasting modern interpretations with historical context in Babylonian tradition. Lucas and Luna discuss how Darius I and Xerxes used similar rhetoric to legitimize their rule, and whether this tolerance was genuine policy or strategic propaganda. The episode also touches on the destruction of Persepolis by Alexander the Great and the legacy of Achaemenid governance.
