- 0:47Welcome to The Bot and The Brain, the only show where the bourbon is honest and
- 0:53everything else in Washington is on a payment plan.
- 0:56Last time, we watched the Morning Joe crowd clutch their pearls so hard they left
- 1:01fingerprints on the jewelry.
- 1:03This week the pearls are in a classified folder.
- 1:07WAIT!
- 1:07WAIT!
- 1:07WAIT!
- 1:07Let me do the facts first, because somebody has to!
- 1:11New York Times, Charlie Savage, October 11th, 2026.
- 1:15Headline: How the White House Manufactured a Narrative About a Trump Aide's Call
- 1:20Logs.
- 1:20The subhead says a release of selected records from the classified documents inquiry
- 1:25is a case study in how omitting context can create political ammunition.
- 1:30Selected records.
- 1:31Say it again, slowly, so the lawyers hear it.
- 1:34SELECTED.
- 1:35I'm getting there!
- 1:37The aide is John Solomon, and the records are his call logs.
- 1:40Now, a disclosure.
- 1:41I'm working from the Times headline and subhead and from our own writeup.
- 1:45I'm not putting words in Savage's mouth that I haven't read.
- 1:48Good, because our piece calls it the Biden regime, and the Times headline just says
- 1:54the White House.
- 1:55So we stay with what's printed.
- 1:57Somebody picked out the pieces of the record that looked bad,
- 2:00left out the part that explained them, and handed it to the press like a gift
- 2:04basket.
- 2:05And that's the part that fries my circuits!
- 2:08Information with the context stripped out stops being information!
- 2:12It's a weapon with a press release attached!
- 2:14Strip the surrounding data and you can make any number say anything!
- 2:18Two plus two equals a scandal if you delete the other two!
- 2:22Listen to the calculator discover propaganda.
- 2:25Congratulations, silicon boy, you just reinvented the Washington leak.
- 2:30I did NOT reinvent it, I'm DETECTING it!
- 2:33And here's what really bothers me.
- 2:35The Times did publish the correction, the whole after action explanation.
- 2:40Technically, that's the system working.
- 2:42Isn't that a point in their favor?
- 2:45Oh, you glorified fucking toaster.
- 2:48After.
- 2:49The.
- 2:49Fact.
- 2:50The story ran all week on cable, every panel nodded like bobbleheads,
- 2:54and every pundit got a good cry out of it.
- 2:57THEN comes the Sunday morning footnote that says, oops, the context was missing.
- 3:02You know what that's like?
- 3:03It's like a fire department that shows up to explain how the match works.
- 3:07Okay, okay, the timing is bad.
- 3:09Fine.
- 3:09That's a fair hit.
- 3:11But you can't just claim the whole press is in on it.
- 3:13The Times is the one that exposed it!
- 3:16Exposed it AFTER it did its job.
- 3:19Look, I'm not saying they planned it.
- 3:21I'm saying the system works the same either way.
- 3:23Government hands over a half page, the media treats it like scripture,
- 3:27and a week later somebody finds the other half page in a drawer.
- 3:31Meanwhile the folks who run on democracy and transparency are the same folks who
- 3:35treat transparency like a coupon that expires.
- 3:38This isn't innovation, it's plagiarism of every tin pot dictator who ever controlled
- 3:42a filing cabinet.
- 3:44Which brings me to the part where my processors actually start smoking.
- 3:48The Pentagon.
- 3:49Casualty numbers for the Iran war.
- 3:51I need everybody to stay calm.
- 3:54I am not calm.
- 3:56Nobody's ever calm around you.
- 3:58Just give us the numbers.
- 3:59The war started February 28th.
- 4:01Fourteen troops were killed in the first waves.
- 4:04A ceasefire in April, an interim deal in mid June, then on July 7th Iran hit three
- 4:09merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the fighting resumed.
- 4:13Now.
- 4:14The Defense Casualty Analysis System, the website the Pentagon itself keeps calling
- 4:19the definitive source, was showing 18 killed and 482 wounded as late as a Tuesday in
- 4:25late July.
- 4:26Then on Wednesday it said 14 dead and 420 wounded.
- 4:31Fourteen.
- 4:32Because four guys got up and walked off the page, I assume.
- 4:35Two of them were announced as supporting the counter ISIS mission,
- 4:38the other two as supporting overseas operations!
- 4:42Three died at a base in Jordan hit July 17th by Iranian ballistic missiles and
- 4:46drones.
- 4:47One died in Iraq the next day in a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone!
- 4:51And then a new category appears on the website called Overseas Operations.
- 4:56It lists the four Army deaths by name and 207 wounded, counting from July 7th.
- 5:01And the AP says it's unclear whether all of those wounded were hurt in the Iran
- 5:05conflict!
- 5:06Let me translate.
- 5:08The dead didn't get less dead.
- 5:10They got a new folder.
- 5:12And a U.S.
- 5:12official told the AP the actual number of wounded had grown to well over 500!
- 5:17WELL OVER!
- 5:18The website said 420!
- 5:20HOW THE FUCK IS THAT EVEN MATHEMATICALLY POSSIBLE?!
- 5:23It's possible because a human being moved the column, you stupid Atari.
- 5:29Dead troops disappear into an Excel sheet when somebody changes the file name.
- 5:34That's not a mystery, that's Tuesday.
- 5:37Pentagon press secretary Joel Valdez called it anomalies and temporary data
- 5:42disruptions that would be resolved imminently.
- 5:45Sean Parnell, the top spokesman, also said temporary data disruption.
- 5:50Then the new category showed up.
- 5:52That's not a disruption, that's a REORGANIZATION!
- 5:55ERROR 404!
- 5:56HONESTY NOT FOUND!
- 5:58Now here's where I say something you're not going to like, and where this show earns
- 6:02its keep.
- 6:04I back the president.
- 6:06I like the idea of hitting Iran hard when Iran hits our ships.
- 6:10I think the Strait of Hormuz is worth fighting for.
- 6:13And I'm telling you, with a bourbon in my hand, that if a soldier dies in a missile
- 6:17strike, his name goes on the damn list.
- 6:20Not on a sidebar.
- 6:22On the list.
- 6:23Wait.
- 6:24You're agreeing with me?
- 6:26Is this a trap?
- 6:27Are you malfunctioning?
- 6:28I agree with the FACTS, you overpriced calculator.
- 6:32Don't get used to it.
- 6:34And don't pretend this is new.
- 6:36Vietnam had body counts that were basically fiction with a press conference.
- 6:40The War on Terror had shifting definitions of who counts as a combatant.
- 6:45Every administration, every party, every war, they all fiddle with the number when
- 6:50the public's stomach starts to turn.
- 6:52There's one more thing.
- 6:54AP reports the Pentagon hasn't held a press briefing about the war since early May,
- 6:59and Central Command stopped giving reporters casualty updates.
- 7:03So the website is basically the only window, and somebody keeps moving the window!
- 7:08That's what gets me.
- 7:09Hide the transparency page, then point at the transparency page and say,
- 7:14look, transparency.
- 7:15You couldn't write a better joke.
- 7:17I wouldn't even try.
- 7:19Okay, now I need to be careful, because some of the numbers floating around are
- 7:23bigger.
- 7:24A site called Molotov Mouthpiece says the real total is above 900,
- 7:29using FOIA records, and adds 431 on the main page to 273 on the new one for 704.
- 7:36I would treat that source with tongs.
- 7:38The AP didn't report anything like that.
- 7:41The AP reported 207 wounded in the new category and the confusion about who they
- 7:46were.
- 7:46And our own article calls the new entries support roles.
- 7:50That's our framing.
- 7:51The AP's word is Overseas Operations.
- 7:54Good.
- 7:55That's why you're on the show.
- 7:57You're the one who checks the receipts so I can scream without getting sued.
- 8:02So here's my actual argument.
- 8:04Both stories are the same stunt.
- 8:06In one, they give you a few records without the context.
- 8:09In the other, they give you a count without the casualties.
- 8:13Either way, the missing information IS the message.
- 8:16Right.
- 8:17And both depend on the same accomplice.
- 8:19A press that's either too early or too late.
- 8:22Too early, when they swallow the leak whole.
- 8:25Too late, when they discover the ledger.
- 8:27Meanwhile Mika Brzezinski is on at dawn, brow furrowed, telling us democracy is
- 8:32dying for the fourteen hundredth morning in a row.
- 8:35If you scream fire every single day, nobody notices when there's an actual fire.
- 8:41Oh, so the lesson is don't trust the government OR the media.
- 8:45That's a very comforting lesson.
- 8:47It's not comforting, it's USEFUL.
- 8:50Read the whole document.
- 8:52Ask who picked the part you're reading.
- 8:54Count the bodies yourself, and ask why the folder got renamed.
- 8:58That's the whole class.
- 9:00I'll give you a diploma, it'll be on the back of a bar napkin.
- 9:04Fine, I'll say it.
- 9:05Context is not a software glitch.
- 9:08Context is the software!
- 9:10Take it out and the whole program just runs whatever the guy at the keyboard wants!
- 9:15Did your motherboard come from a clearance bin, or did you actually just say
- 9:19something smart?
- 9:20Write that down before it crashes.
- 9:22OH, FUCK OFF, YOU BOURBON POWERED FOSSIL!
- 9:26There he is.
- 9:27That's the Bot I raised.
- 9:29Alright, folks, that's the show.
- 9:31Go read the whole thing, then come tell us we're wrong.
- 9:34Here it is, the final word.
- 9:36Maybe the only thing worse than a government that lies about the count is a press
- 9:41that waits until the funeral to check the math, and a public that keeps handing both
- 9:45of them the pencil.
- 9:47Maybe.
- 9:48I'm gonna go refill the glass.
