Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Gavin Grey: UK Correspondent on the migrants rescued from the boat that caught fire crossing the English Channel
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's go to Nigel Faraj. He reckons that the UK,
- 0:02Speaker 1: for its part, should get the navy involved.
- 0:04Speaker 2: It will help the French in fulfilling their job of
- 0:08Speaker 2: stopping the boats, and it will save a huge amount
- 0:12Speaker 2: of money. We are very confident that our policy of
- 0:17Speaker 2: securely picking people up and safely taking them back to France,
- 0:23Speaker 2: we are entirely confident that that falls within other conventions
- 0:28Speaker 2: of international law.
- 0:30Speaker 1: So let's go to Gevin Gray are UK. You're a
- 0:32Speaker 1: correspondent now, given nice heavy on the program, there's been
- 0:36Speaker 1: more problems. One hundred and fifty migrants rescued after a
- 0:39Speaker 1: boat caught fire and the channel.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean migration, and the subject of that is
- 0:44Speaker 3: absolutely all over our headlines at the moment, As you said,
- 0:47Speaker 3: we had Sweater, the North African enclave that belongs to
- 0:51Speaker 3: Spain being suddenly subjected to sixty thousand people trying to
- 0:54Speaker 3: swarm in. Then Nigel Faraj's comments, which incidentally France turned
- 0:59Speaker 3: around and said, if you've don't those people on our coast,
- 1:01Speaker 3: that'll be violation of international law and French sovereignty. And
- 1:05Speaker 3: then today one hundred and seventy migrants have been rescued
- 1:08Speaker 3: after the boat they were using across from France to
- 1:11Speaker 3: England caught fire. All are going to be returned to France.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Eleven received minor injuries. It's total one hundred and seventy
- 1:21Speaker 3: three in one boat, and that seems to be the
- 1:23Speaker 3: latest tactic run much much bigger boats looking to get
- 1:27Speaker 3: people across the channel. French prosecutors have now opened an
- 1:31Speaker 3: investigation and Egyptian national has been taken into police custody.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Now the government here is saying, look, we you know
- 1:39Speaker 3: our measures are working. The numbers are actually not as
- 1:42Speaker 3: high as they were last year, but just since Andy
- 1:45Speaker 3: Burnham became our new Prime Minister of fortnight ago, we've
- 1:48Speaker 3: had more than two thousand cross the channel successfully. So
- 1:51Speaker 3: others are saying, including of course Nigel Faraja Reform UK.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Enough is enough. We've had enough of this. These measures
- 1:58Speaker 3: are not working and it's getting going to get worse,
- 2:01Speaker 3: not better. But very interesting to see where this row
- 2:04Speaker 3: goes about him saying it's within the international law, France
- 2:07Speaker 3: saying it would break international law, and can you just
- 2:11Speaker 3: pull up a moor boat and just dump people on
- 2:14Speaker 3: a beach at the other side, These questions remain unanswered.
- 2:17Speaker 1: It's interesting because they always talk about that down forty percent,
- 2:19Speaker 1: but that was off a record high. And there was
- 2:22Speaker 1: I forget the name of the minister, Givin but Beck
- 2:24Speaker 1: in the day when this was just kicking off, there
- 2:26Speaker 1: was something like two hundred people crossing in a year
- 2:28Speaker 1: and some minister came home from holiday. You know, it
- 2:31Speaker 1: was a scandal. And here we are, what about BP
- 2:35Speaker 1: profits up on the back of the wall.
- 2:38Speaker 3: A massive, massive, massive profits. So the oil giant, British
- 2:42Speaker 3: Petroleum or BP, has announced quarterly profits the highest since
- 2:47Speaker 3: the twenty twenty two figure after the war in the
- 2:50Speaker 3: Middle East pushed up oil prices. So between April and June,
- 2:54Speaker 3: just those three months ryan BP has announced profits of
- 2:58Speaker 3: nine bill New Zealand dollars, more than double made a
- 3:04Speaker 3: year earlier, and the highest quarterly profit, as I said,
- 3:06Speaker 3: since twenty twenty two. And incidentally I mentioned that because
- 3:09Speaker 3: that's when the Russia Ukraine war began. The price of crude,
- 3:13Speaker 3: of course, has jumped massively since the outbreak of war
- 3:15Speaker 3: in Irano. It has gone down today over speculation that
- 3:18Speaker 3: these trade of worn news might be reopened. And what
- 3:21Speaker 3: are people saying, Well, it's interesting. In America, Donald Trump
- 3:24Speaker 3: has criticized the American oil firms Exonmobile and Chevrol to
- 3:28Speaker 3: making too much money. Of course, price is there a rocketed,
- 3:31Speaker 3: leading to unpopularity for Donald Trump. But despite the big
- 3:35Speaker 3: rising profits, the BP chief executive says the company is
- 3:38Speaker 3: not reaching its full potential. And I say again that
- 3:42Speaker 3: was just a quarterly profit figure. Here in the UK,
- 3:45Speaker 3: we do have a winfall tax, but that was introduced
- 3:49Speaker 3: twenty twenty two, but it only applies to profits made
- 3:52Speaker 3: from extracting oil and gas in the UK, and critics
- 3:55Speaker 3: today are saying BP should be paying much more tax
- 3:58Speaker 3: on profits that makes around the world.
