- 0:22SPEAKER_00: What do powerful words look like?
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: When you think of powerful words, you probably imagine Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address, or maybe JFK giving a speech about America's mission to the moon.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you imagine an author like Maya Angelou talking about how she overcame a difficult childhood.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: But powerful words aren't just reserved for classic speeches or world-renowned books.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: You have powerful words too.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: In fact, there is one single two-letter word that has more power than anything else in your vocabulary.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: But first, let me share a quote from E.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: B.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: White, who was the author of classic children's books like Stuart Little and Charlotte's Webb.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And he was also the second half of the Strunk and White Duo, who you might recognize as the authors of the classic writing guide, The Elements of Style.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: And if you've never read The Elements of Style, I highly recommend it.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: It's great.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Plus, it's really short.
- 1:16unknown: E.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: B.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: White said this in response to an invitation he received.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: He said, I must decline for secret reasons.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Now, obviously, because his reasons were secret, we don't know the reasons that he declined this invitation, but we do know this.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: He said no to the invitation and he didn't elaborate on the reasons.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: He was confident enough in his reasoning to let his simple no be a no.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: It's interesting because the word no is such a small word, it's just two simple letters.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: But it has immense power because it can give you the freedom to make time for your writing and focus on what's most important to you.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: You have a lot of things pulling you in different directions, and I want to give you permission.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: It's okay to say no.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: You can't do everything and you can't please everybody.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: If your writing is going to be a priority, you've got to make time and space in your life to write.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: And that means saying no sometimes.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Now I realize it's a lot easier said than done, but if you want to reach your full potential as a writer, you've got to focus on doing the work that matters rather than trying to make everybody else in your life happy.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And that little two letter word no is the key to your success.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So my challenge is what can you say no to today?
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
