- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in His word, and show His love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to the Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17I am excited for today's episode because I only have to do 4
- 0:23verses this time. And today's verses are First
- 0:27Timothy chapter 3, verses 4 through 7, First Timothy 3/4
- 0:33through 7. And we've been talking in the
- 0:35letter from Paul to Timothy about the local church and what
- 0:40it looks like to worship, to pray, to evangelize for those
- 0:47that are leaders within a church, what they should not be
- 0:51like, what they should be like. And so that's where we were last
- 0:54episode is we walked through verses one through 3 and saw the
- 1:00list of characteristics for those that would be in the
- 1:04senior leadership of a local church.
- 1:07Scripture only talks about two types of church leaders, elders,
- 1:12sometimes called pastors and deacons.
- 1:16And so the first of these elders, or what is called a
- 1:21little bit less than elders, overseers, and least of all
- 1:24pastors or shepherds, we read this in verse #1 I'm going to
- 1:30read through into where we're at today.
- 1:32If you want any specification on any of the descriptions that are
- 1:36given of the kind of character that an overseer or an elder is
- 1:40to have, you can watch that last episode.
- 1:42Or you can look over at my episode in Acts 20 or the one in
- 1:46First Peter 5 or the episode, the legacy episode that we did
- 1:51in Titus chapter 1 for more details on any of those.
- 1:56Says if anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble
- 2:01work. An overseer therefore must be
- 2:03above reproach. The husband of one wife, self
- 2:07controlled, sensible, respectable, hospitable, able to
- 2:12teach, not an excessive drinker, not a bully, but gentle, not
- 2:15quarrelsome, not greedy. And then here we have our verses
- 2:20for today. He must manage his own household
- 2:23competently and have his children under control with all
- 2:27dignity. If anyone does not know how to
- 2:29manage his own household, how will he take care of God's
- 2:32church? He must not be a new convert or
- 2:35he might become conceited and incur the same condemnation as
- 2:39the devil. Furthermore, he must have a good
- 2:42reputation among outsiders so that he does not fall into
- 2:45disgrace and the devil's trap. So kind of the main thought that
- 2:50we're going to be looking at today from these verses is the
- 2:53fact that God has His church organized like a family.
- 3:00And in the church family there are, if you will, church
- 3:05fathers. So here's what we're going to
- 3:08look at first, then in verse #4 so an overseer, a pastor, after
- 3:13all of these other characteristics that we've
- 3:16looked at, he must manage he overseas, his own family, his
- 3:22own household competently and have his children under control
- 3:28with all dignity. OK, here's what I want us to
- 3:32notice here. First there in the beginning of
- 3:35verse 4, to manage one's household competently.
- 3:40When you yeah, I'm sure you guys have seen this many times when
- 3:44you have walked into some people's house and it is just
- 3:49mayhem. There is chaos for you to walk
- 3:53into this persons home. You know this is just going to
- 3:57be a madhouse. That is not to be the situation
- 4:01with a person that would be an overseer or an elder of a local
- 4:05church. Instead the kind of if you will,
- 4:09the kind of father, the kind of leader that he is in the home
- 4:13shows that he is capable of leading people as exemplified by
- 4:20his own wife and kids. And during this time period, if
- 4:24you had any like household servants that would also fall
- 4:27under your household, Can I ask you today, what is your house
- 4:35like? Is your house a place of chaos
- 4:39and disorder? Is your home a place where there
- 4:43is not peace or any sort of, I'll say organization?
- 4:47Not in a sense that often it's used nowadays of, you know, it's
- 4:52everything and it's perfect box. And if you pick up an item, does
- 4:56it bring you joy? And have you removed all the
- 4:58items that don't bring you joy from your house?
- 5:00Not that kind of thing. But is your home a place where
- 5:05both you and those that you have over can find some peace?
- 5:11Now that is a tough ask. I have toddlers right now.
- 5:15And so even with, well, I keep saying that my, my daughter is 3
- 5:211/2, so she's almost out of the toddler stage.
- 5:24My son at the time that this episode releases, he'll be like
- 5:28a week or week and a half away from turning 6 years old.
- 5:31So they're not really toddlers anymore.
- 5:33I got to stop saying that on the podcast.
- 5:36I've got young kids and so they love making messes.
- 5:39And so actually that's meant for me as I'm trying to manage my
- 5:43household competently. I am trying to help teach them,
- 5:48Hey, when we play with toys, we put them back.
- 5:52When we take off clothes, it goes in the hamper or you know,
- 5:55we, we fold them, we put them nicely into our bed so that we
- 5:59have her our pajamas for that night.
- 6:03You know, if there's trash, I had to make sure that I don't
- 6:07just say, ah, well, Samantha, one of the kids will take care
- 6:09of that. No, though I need to have that
- 6:12desire to take care of those things.
- 6:14Do you realize here all of these things that we've been looking
- 6:18at for an overseer, These are all characteristics that all
- 6:22Christians should share. Every Christian ought to be self
- 6:26controlled. It's one of the fruit of the
- 6:28Spirit. Every Christian ought to be
- 6:30hospitable. Every Christian ought to be not
- 6:35a bully but gentle. Every Christian ought not to be
- 6:38an excessive drinker. Like all of these things are for
- 6:42all Christians and those that follow that path of what
- 6:47Christian should be, those are the people that we look at to be
- 6:51our church leaders, not just those that make the most money,
- 6:53not just those that are the most charismatic, not just people
- 6:57that want to be leaders. What matters is our character.
- 7:01And so how we live, how we if you quite literally, how we live
- 7:06within our home plays a part in our character.
- 7:13And so do you view your home life as something that is
- 7:17valuable and important. Now here what's not strictly in
- 7:22view is, you know, the chaos of your home.
- 7:26It specifically deals with the people within the home and for
- 7:32elders, for overseers. What that means is that we need
- 7:36to be able to lead the one or three or five people that the
- 7:44Lord has already given us before we attempt to lead anyone else.
- 7:49That we would say, I, just like a elder, would teach other
- 7:55people the word of God and would encourage them in their walks
- 7:59with the Lord and would give them scriptural advice.
- 8:01Are you doing that within your own home, if you will?
- 8:06Every father, every husband is a pastor of a church.
- 8:12They're a shepherd. They're one that would seek to
- 8:14guide others within their home or perhaps I know of many people
- 8:21and friends that I've had over the years that they are women
- 8:26and their husbands either do not know the Lord at all or profess
- 8:32to know the Lord. But it doesn't actually impact,
- 8:36you know, their their schedule, their words, their finances, any
- 8:41of that kind of stuff. And so I've seen women that have
- 8:45faithfully taking their kids to church when their husbands would
- 8:51not, and women that would consistently pray for and love
- 8:58their husbands in a way that guides that husband towards
- 9:02follow Jesus. Just like I am exemplifying for
- 9:06you, if you will, it's setting the example within the home.
- 9:10And so every, every father is called to be one that would
- 9:15guide and set the example for the home.
- 9:18That's not to say like women do whatever you want.
- 9:21You don't have to be an example. No, you follow Jesus too.
- 9:24And especially if your husband isn't setting the example for
- 9:27what it looks like to follow Jesus, you set the example from
- 9:31the word of God. You live out your Christian life
- 9:34and live it and help those around you help your kids help
- 9:39your grandkids help your your spouse to know what it looks
- 9:44like to follow Jesus because they can just look at you that
- 9:49is here predominantly what is in mind as Paul tells this to
- 9:53Timothy, someone that would pastor those that would be an
- 9:59elder overseer in their church. They are pastoring their family
- 10:05well and that based on that case study they can be trusted to
- 10:11pastor the the larger church. I'll tell you guys just
- 10:15transparently. I was 26 years old when I came
- 10:20here to Tabernacle and began pastoring. 5 years before that
- 10:27I'd come to Moses Lake Baptist Church in Moses Lake, WA and was
- 10:31made a music and discipleship pastor there.
- 10:36I don't totally know if, as I look back over the course of my
- 10:41life, I don't know that I would have called Brian Self a pastor
- 10:47at that point. Like at 21, I think it was 21
- 10:50years old when I came to Moses Lake.
- 10:53I don't know that I would have called Brian Self a pastor.
- 10:55Now, I might have said, you know, here's here's our music
- 10:58director or something like that. I don't know that anyone could
- 11:03have said, oh, yes, Brian is pastoring his home very well at
- 11:0721. Now, by 26, I had some kids.
- 11:12I had, you know, been married for five years at that point.
- 11:15And so Lord willing, there was able to be that fruit scene that
- 11:21people could say, oh, yes, I, I do see he leads, he pastors his
- 11:26family. Well, now, if a person is not
- 11:28married or does not have kids, this does not mean, OK, well, we
- 11:32really shouldn't consider them as a pastor because if they
- 11:36don't have a household, how can we tell if they manage their
- 11:39household well? Well, this can go for maybe a
- 11:41person and isn't married or doesn't have kids, but how do
- 11:44they interact with perhaps their parents if they have, you know,
- 11:49siblings, nieces or nephews or even within the church, you can
- 11:55have your spiritual brothers or sisters or a man can be a
- 12:00disciple in some people. And you can just see through his
- 12:04life. He is already doing the
- 12:07pastoring work. He's already doing the leading
- 12:11by example in the Jesus way. He's already doing that.
- 12:15And so this is what Paul tells Timothy.
- 12:18Find people that are trustworthy and competent to be able to lead
- 12:24others, beginning with their own home, no matter how gifted or
- 12:30charismatic a person might be and a great orator, all that
- 12:35kind of stuff. If he cannot, if he cannot lead
- 12:43his family, if they have no respect for him, if there is no
- 12:51like obedience or respect from his children, if there is just
- 12:56total opposition and hurt from his wife that she goes, OK,
- 13:05yeah, he he talks all this stuff, but the way that he lives
- 13:09doesn't back this up at all. And so I don't want to mimic him
- 13:13because I've seen the way that he truly lives.
- 13:17That should be a disqualifying thing that we would say, OK,
- 13:23that person, man, like they are trying their best to follow
- 13:26Jesus. They are actually really good at
- 13:29explaining God's Word, but because of what their home life
- 13:36is like, they would not be good at shepherding others because
- 13:41right now they're not good at shepherding those that God has
- 13:43already given to them. So that's one consideration that
- 13:48we have. That's something that has to be
- 13:50prayerful. And frankly, I've seen that
- 13:52applied in various different ways across churches, like the
- 13:57way that a given church or a given group of elders will give
- 14:01that evaluation and what amount of, you know, a person's
- 14:07leadership is on them versus how much is OK the the people in
- 14:14their home. You know, me as a dad, I can't
- 14:18determine what Samantha is going to do.
- 14:21Like I can't, I can't make a choice for B or for Evelyn on
- 14:30what they are going to do each and every day.
- 14:34I can lead them. I can with my kids, I can tell
- 14:39them what to do. I can have, you know,
- 14:42consequences for specific actions or attitudes or words.
- 14:46And I can try and be consistent, but I can't control them.
- 14:49They're they're not puppets. And so churches and existing
- 14:56pastors or elders will weigh differently how much is on the
- 15:04prospective elder that they would say, OK, yes, he he is
- 15:09doing what he's supposed to be doing.
- 15:11These people aren't receiving it well.
- 15:13But we can tell he is attempting to manage his household
- 15:17competently. So I say all of that.
- 15:20That is a really, really tough discussion.
- 15:24And so I want to encourage you like pray for your pastors, pray
- 15:28for your elders as they have to navigate through some of these
- 15:36situations as Lord willing, you know, they continue to train up
- 15:40men and as God brings more, more pastors, more shepherds on that,
- 15:47those are considerations that they have to make.
- 15:49So pray for your pulpit search committee, pray for your elders
- 15:54or whatever that looks like in your context.
- 15:55Pray for them and pray for your pastors.
- 15:58Pray for your elders that they would continue to manage their
- 16:02household competently, that they would faithfully shepherd those
- 16:05that God has given them so that they are able to shepherd well
- 16:10all of the rest of God's family, which is exactly what verse 5
- 16:13says. If anyone does not know how to
- 16:16manage his own household, how will he take care of God's
- 16:19church? I also wanted to mention there
- 16:22at the end of verse #4 that he has his children under control
- 16:26with all dignity. That what is in mind here,
- 16:31knowing what I know about the Old Testament, is that you would
- 16:35not have what happened with Samuel.
- 16:41You wouldn't have what happened with what was Samuel's
- 16:45predecessor's name. Man, it has totally skipped my
- 16:50mind. I'm going to go over to First
- 16:51Samuel chapter 1 because I know that's where it's found, but I
- 16:56cannot remember that guy's name, Eli, the priest Levi.
- 17:02So what is in mind here is that you would not have what happened
- 17:05with Eli, with Samuel, or with David, that in those stories,
- 17:12each of those men were good, godly guys, but their sons were
- 17:19wicked people who were actively sinning.
- 17:23That were Eli's sons actually were committing sexual
- 17:30immorality within the Tabernacle with women in Israel.
- 17:36It was just an awful, horrible thing that was taking place.
- 17:40So, but what we're told in those stories is that those fathers
- 17:45did not tell their sons no, there were no consequences for
- 17:49the actions that they were doing.
- 17:51And they had responsibility to constrain, to stop the evil that
- 17:58was going on, but they refused. And so here what Paul tells
- 18:03Timothy is those that are going to be leaders in the church
- 18:06should not be like those guys. Instead, for as long as you have
- 18:12kids in your home, they ought to be under control there.
- 18:16They can be told no. There can be consequences for
- 18:20their actions. So want to encourage you, if you
- 18:25have kids, it is your responsibility to tell them no.
- 18:30It is your responsibility to have there be consequences for
- 18:34their actions. If there are never any
- 18:36consequences for your children when they do what is wrong, you
- 18:40are training them up in a bad way.
- 18:43They will continue to ignore God and all authorities as as we
- 18:51abdicate our responsibility to show them what good authority is
- 18:56supposed to look like. So if you're a parent, take your
- 18:59job seriously. It's part of your character how
- 19:01you raise your kids. Set boundaries for your
- 19:04children. When they break those
- 19:06boundaries, hold them accountable.
- 19:08Have there be consequences. Do it.
- 19:10Do it lovingly. Do it with a care for their
- 19:13soul. Let them know that even when
- 19:15they fail that it doesn't take away your love for them, but
- 19:21that it helps mold our character as we learn to submit first and
- 19:29foremost to God and then to the other authorities that God has
- 19:32in our lives. OK, verse number six.
- 19:36He must not be a new convert or he might become conceited and
- 19:40incur the same condemnation as the devil.
- 19:44You can think of Satan's sin as pride and arrogance where he
- 19:48says I will be like the Most High, I will ascend to the
- 19:51mountain of the Lord. That was Satan's pride and his
- 19:55arrogance. And so he was brought down
- 19:57because he thought that he was something special.
- 20:00And a lot of times when there's a new convert.
- 20:04They can be lifted up really fast into leadership if they're
- 20:08particularly charismatic or gifted, or they're able to learn
- 20:12a lot of the Bible quickly. And so people will put new
- 20:16Christians into positions of leadership or prominence, and
- 20:20it's really bad for their souls because they begin to think that
- 20:23they are someone special. Yeah, I, I think that's all I'll
- 20:28say about that at the moment. Then verse #7 Furthermore, he
- 20:31must have a good reputation among outsiders so that he does
- 20:36not fall into disgrace and the devil's trap.
- 20:42Our testimony towards outsiders, towards those that do not know
- 20:46Jesus is important. When the outside world looks at
- 20:51Brian, they need to be able to say, all right, I might not
- 20:56agree with his Jesus stuff, but I I do believe that he is
- 21:02genuine. I think he's wrong, but he's
- 21:04genuine. When the world goes no, like
- 21:07they are fleecing those people. He is, you know, actively
- 21:13sinning. He's, you know, pursuing
- 21:15extramarital affairs. He stole from this business that
- 21:19he, you know, lied on his taxes in this when the outside world
- 21:25looks and they see someone that would be judged in the world
- 21:30leading a church man that brings that brings reproach on the name
- 21:35of Christ. And so it's the reason why, like
- 21:39if Brian ever screws up and does something that I should not do,
- 21:45my church should not be like, OK, well, how can we cover this
- 21:48up? How can we, you know, kind of
- 21:51shuffle this under the rug? We really like our pastor.
- 21:54We'll keep him. No, no, no, for the sake of
- 21:56Jesus, throw me under the bus and whatever I or any other
- 22:01pastor do like we are deserving of the condemnation that we get
- 22:06from the world when we choose to not follow Christ in our words
- 22:11and in our actions and behavior. It is really important because
- 22:16if we're going to reach the World, we should not be behaving
- 22:20or speaking in such a way that the world goes, man, that is
- 22:24super messed up. Like this is a criminal.
- 22:27This is someone that is clearly in the wrong and so why in the
- 22:32world would we believe the Jesus people when the Jesus people are
- 22:36embracing wickedness? There are a lot of weird
- 22:40applications people have made that at times. 1 instance that
- 22:45was kind of in the news recently was one of the elders, one of
- 22:49the lay elders of a church in Minnesota serves in our
- 22:55Immigrations and, and Customs Enforcement.
- 22:59And the, the church had a bunch of protesters that came in
- 23:04during the Sunday morning worship service and disrupted,
- 23:09disrupted the church service because of the elder that just
- 23:15has a government job. And I saw some people that tried
- 23:21to apply this particular verse to that situation.
- 23:24But the truth is, if we're going to have a government at all,
- 23:29then I would hope that there would be some faithful, godly
- 23:32men with good, godly characteristics like we've been
- 23:35reading about. And that those would be the best
- 23:38people in the world at, you know, Immigrations and Customs
- 23:43Enforcement because they would be led by the Spirit of God that
- 23:46they would not have, if you will, if they're aligned with
- 23:51Jesus. They don't have racial animosity
- 23:55towards someone that what they do, they do with reserve that
- 24:02they are gentle in the way that they are treating, that they
- 24:06have kindness in the way that they are interacting with those
- 24:11that are being deported or those that are being held that they
- 24:14would care for the needs of people.
- 24:16And so that would be, to my mind, the best kinds of people
- 24:20that you would want in positions of government.
- 24:24So I I wanted to mention that just because I've seen it in the
- 24:27cultural zeitgeist recently as pertaining to this particular
- 24:30verse, but the point of the verse is not do people do people
- 24:34in the world like you? The question is, are they able
- 24:38to say, hey, here is this wrong, here's this wickedness, here's
- 24:42this evil that they are doing and especially in that
- 24:46situation, it was not, hey, he has taken this course of action.
- 24:50We saw this thing or that thing that he did.
- 24:53It's kind of a wholesale. We are against this division of
- 24:58the government or we're against their placement right here,
- 25:02right now in our state and in our city.
- 25:05And so we are going to disrupt a church because one of their
- 25:10elders serves in this capacity in our government.
- 25:13And certainly that should not be something we ever do.
- 25:18You can have a whole lot of of disagreements with a variety of
- 25:24governmental things, but the answer would never be, hey,
- 25:28we're going to disrupt a church's worship.
- 25:31That should not be the right course of action, especially as
- 25:36Christians, as believers, Jesus gives us what to do?
- 25:39Go and talk to that person. And as we do that, as we follow
- 25:44God's way, Lord willing, he is glorified, and his work
- 25:48continues in some great ways. Well, next episode we're looking
- 25:53at what are deacons like? And we're going to be looking in
- 25:56particular at verse #11 on why some churches have only male
- 26:03deacons and why many churches have deaconesses.
- 26:07And we're going to see from those verses, all right, is this
- 26:11OK? Is this acquiescence culture?
- 26:14Which one is it? So in case I haven't angered
- 26:16people enough already, I'll see you next episode.
