Speaker 4: And so they're sort of immigration nightmares situation, right, So
• 0:59
Speaker 4: that done, Yes, it is.
• 1:00
  Speaker 1: It's amazing.
• 1:02
Speaker 2: So that's great and they were lovely and so sweet. Yes,
• 1:05
Speaker 2: it's so nice to see my brother married with children.
• 1:08
Speaker 2: It's so sweet. He found his he found the lid
• 1:11
  Speaker 2: to his podcaster.
• 1:12
  Speaker 1: Isn't that sweet?
• 1:13
  Speaker 3: I know.
• 1:13
Speaker 4: I remember we did a minnesode with him, or we
• 1:15
Speaker 4: did an episode with him way back in the day,
• 1:18
Speaker 4: and I think he had just started dating.
• 1:19
Speaker 1: Her maybe or it was early day. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: They told me some funny stories.
• 1:24
Speaker 2: And my sister lives right by them, so she's really
• 1:26
Speaker 2: helping out and that's really cute, and I like, yeah,
• 1:30
Speaker 2: it's it's just one big happy family.
• 1:33
Speaker 1: Oh over at the Handler Household, did you.
• 1:35
Speaker 4: See, speaking of New York City, did you see this
• 1:37
Speaker 4: thing that mom Donnie did to like help people meet
• 1:40
  Speaker 4: their love?
• 1:41
Speaker 1: No, what did he do?
• 1:42
Speaker 4: So someone posted like, you know, Mom Donnie's doing all
• 1:45
Speaker 4: this cool stuff like oh, mom Donny, help with this
• 1:47
Speaker 4: and this and this, and this guy posted like I'm
• 1:49
Speaker 4: supposed to be having a date with the love of
• 1:50
Speaker 4: my life here at this library DA in Brooklyn. And
• 1:55
Speaker 4: so Mom Donnie not only responded to it, he like
• 1:57
Speaker 4: reposted it and he's like scheduled little cute events.
• 2:01
  Speaker 1: That's really cute.
• 2:02
Speaker 2: He must have picked that up from my matchmaking online.
• 2:05
Speaker 2: Oh he's always copying me, mom. Donnie's doing good things
• 2:09
Speaker 2: in New York City.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: It's actually really exciting.
• 2:11
Speaker 2: Yes, I did the Pivot podcast with Kars Swisher this
• 2:14
Speaker 2: week that I think airs tomorrow, and she does this
• 2:17
Speaker 2: thing at the end called predictions, and I predicted that Abdul.
• 2:20
Speaker 1: Al say Yeah, will win Michigan. That's my prediction. That's
• 2:23
  Speaker 1: my political prediction.
• 2:25
Speaker 2: And my also political prediction is that Mitch McConnell is dead.
• 2:29
Speaker 1: And I like the news that we got about.
• 2:32
Speaker 2: I don't know how this will be received, but it
• 2:34
Speaker 2: really gives a shit. Brad Bitt is back on the
• 2:37
Speaker 2: sauce I love. I mean, honestly, if you quit drinking
• 2:41
Speaker 2: to get your family back and they don't come back,
• 2:43
Speaker 2: then why are you quitting drinks and they remove your
• 2:46
Speaker 2: Seven years is the period of time that we've spoken
• 2:48
Speaker 2: about at length that has time to a new phase.
• 2:53
Speaker 2: And if I get one more thing on my fucking
• 2:55
Speaker 2: algorithm about this fucking lunar eclipse and this what the
• 2:59
Speaker 2: next twelve years of hell are going to be like?
• 3:01
Speaker 2: And PISCESI, my algorithm is like you're walking into a
• 3:05
Speaker 2: fire pit of hell, it's actually saying you're walking away
• 3:08
  Speaker 2: from it.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: But it's just so annoying all day long, I'm.
• 3:11
Speaker 2: Like, I, I can't hear anything more about these eclipses.
• 3:15
Speaker 1: No, No, it's just too much. I can't hear about
• 3:17
Speaker 1: bad news and bad things coming like.
• 3:19
Speaker 2: Just shifting and all these tarot card readers. How did
• 3:22
Speaker 2: these even start coming up on my algorithm?
• 3:24
  Speaker 1: I it's a witch job. It's Nominika because she's all
• 3:28
Speaker 1: about it, you know?
• 3:29
  Speaker 5: Yeah?
• 3:30
  Speaker 1: Are you?
• 3:30
  Speaker 3: Also?
• 3:30
Speaker 2: By the way, if you haven't listened to what You're
• 3:33
Speaker 2: the Problem with Yaminika, that's our latest That's our latest offering.
• 3:37
Speaker 2: Here at the Dear Chelsea Network, we have a new
• 3:40
Speaker 2: podcast called You're the Problem with You Dominika, So please
• 3:42
Speaker 2: support her and listen and download and subscribe.
• 3:45
Speaker 1: And she's so funny and she's so fun she is.
• 3:47
Speaker 2: And it's such a fun podcast. I've actually really enjoying it,
• 3:50
Speaker 2: even though I have to listen to it. It's it's
• 3:52
  Speaker 2: your job, it's.
• 3:53
Speaker 1: Tang Okay, screw Charlow. Yes, okay.
• 3:56
Speaker 2: We are introducing a very special guy. You know him
• 4:00
Speaker 2: from Severance Parks and rec Party Down and more. And
• 4:04
Speaker 2: his new movie is The whisper Man, which is out
• 4:07
Speaker 2: on Netflix now, which is fucking awesome and has my
• 4:10
Speaker 2: other boyfriend in it, Robert de Niro.
• 4:12
Speaker 1: Please welcome Adam Scott.
• 4:15
Speaker 2: We good to go, Brad, because I'm ready to rumble
• 4:18
Speaker 2: and Adam's ready to rumble.
• 4:20
Speaker 3: Is this uh appropriate spot for it? Is this appropriate?
• 4:23
Speaker 1: It's not appropriate? Actually, we need you to take your
• 4:25
Speaker 1: hands off of them.
• 4:26
Speaker 2: All right, Okay, we live in a very sense we're
• 4:28
Speaker 2: living during a very sensitive We're actually we're living in
• 4:30
Speaker 2: a very desensitized time.
• 4:32
Speaker 1: We went from very sensitive to desensitized.
• 4:34
Speaker 3: Right, everything, Sure is it? Sure?
• 4:37
Speaker 2: Is your hair as usual? Looks magnificent? Do Are you
• 4:41
  Speaker 2: happy with it?
• 4:42
Speaker 3: I'm fine with it. I just was as long as
• 4:44
  Speaker 3: you're fine.
• 4:44
Speaker 2: I just had the pleasure of watching him get his
• 4:46
Speaker 2: hair quaffed in my kitchen, so I liked that.
• 4:51
  Speaker 4: And our situation.
• 4:53
Speaker 2: It's just impressive to see ahead of hair like this.
• 4:55
Speaker 2: I know you talk about your hair a lot. If
• 4:56
Speaker 2: people ask you about your.
• 4:57
Speaker 3: Hair a lot, ask me about my hair.
• 4:59
Speaker 1: Do you get some conscious about it?
• 5:01
Speaker 3: You know? I'm just grateful at this age that I
• 5:04
Speaker 3: have hair. So I'm fine with it. Because if I'm
• 5:07
Speaker 3: talking about my hair, I don't have to talk about
• 5:09
  Speaker 3: something else.
• 5:10
Speaker 1: Like the fact that you look so much like Tom Cruise.
• 5:14
  Speaker 3: That's right.
• 5:15
Speaker 1: How does that make you feel that.
• 5:17
Speaker 3: I look like Tom Cruise?
• 5:18
  Speaker 1: Do you think?
• 5:19
  Speaker 3: Do you think?
• 5:19
  Speaker 1: Do you think?
• 5:20
Speaker 3: Do you think? Do you I'm sorry I started the
• 5:24
  Speaker 3: sentence first.
• 5:25
Speaker 1: I think I started this interview.
• 5:28
Speaker 3: I look like Tom Cruise? Yes you do?
• 5:31
  Speaker 1: Yes?
• 5:32
  Speaker 3: Interesting?
• 5:32
  Speaker 1: And do you?
• 5:34
  Speaker 3: I mean, it's a huge compliment. First of all, I
• 5:39
Speaker 3: understand why people have said it, But people used to
• 5:42
Speaker 3: say it all the time, like a long time ago,
• 5:45
Speaker 3: and then it sort of stopped. So I wonder if
• 5:47
Speaker 3: there's an era of Tom Cruise where we kind of
• 5:50
Speaker 3: like matched up for a couple of years and that
• 5:53
  Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know culturally why it happened
• 5:56
Speaker 3: at a particular time, but I would take it as
• 5:59
  Speaker 3: a huge compliment.
• 6:00
Speaker 2: Yeah, do you think that you and Tom Cruise have
• 6:03
  Speaker 2: similar running styles?
• 6:05
Speaker 3: Well? I would hope so, because he's like the best
• 6:08
Speaker 3: cinematic runner of all time.
• 6:10
Speaker 2: Yeah. Is that what he's known for his run? He's
• 6:13
Speaker 2: known for his stunts, right, which include running.
• 6:17
Speaker 3: Yes, But he's also known for like if you seem
• 6:19
Speaker 3: born on the fourth of July, I remember that movie. Yeah,
• 6:21
Speaker 3: Like he's known for his performances as well.
• 6:24
Speaker 2: Well, yeah, right, right, right, of course, he's known for
• 6:26
  Speaker 2: his actor. He's a good he's a good actor. The
• 6:29
Speaker 2: thing about a plethora of thing.
• 6:30
Speaker 3: The thing about his running is that I don't think
• 6:34
Speaker 3: I've ever dedicated as much of myself to anything as
• 6:40
Speaker 3: he does to running. Like his running is like top notch,
• 6:44
Speaker 3: like no one's ever. Don't you think if you his
• 6:47
Speaker 3: running in Mission Impossible movies, he is putting absolutely everything
• 6:51
Speaker 3: he has into those those runs.
• 6:55
Speaker 2: Well he must he probably do you run on the
• 6:57
Speaker 2: side in real life? No, you only run in severance.
• 7:00
Speaker 2: That's right, because that's pretty much the only time I've
• 7:02
Speaker 2: seen you run. Oh, in your new movie The whisper Man.
• 7:04
Speaker 1: You run also, Yes, that's but that's different because.
• 7:07
Speaker 2: In severance it's really like, it's very it's always in
• 7:11
  Speaker 2: the same space.
• 7:12
Speaker 1: You're always in a hallway, right, And.
• 7:13
Speaker 3: It's a lot of it Like we it's you know,
• 7:15
Speaker 3: we spend a lot of time shooting those sequences. So
• 7:19
Speaker 3: it's and I don't like train for it or whatever,
• 7:22
Speaker 3: which I probably should.
• 7:23
Speaker 1: Yeah, And I feel like Tom Cruise is training.
• 7:26
Speaker 2: He's probably got a running coach and a running style
• 7:29
Speaker 2: coach to run so he doesn't look like an asshole
• 7:32
Speaker 2: and you don't look like an assole when you run.
• 7:33
Speaker 3: It sounds like you were kind of saying.
• 7:35
Speaker 2: I thought it was going to sound like that as well,
• 7:38
Speaker 2: which is why I followed it up with you saying
• 7:40
Speaker 2: that you're not bad at.
• 7:42
Speaker 3: Running, didn't look like an asshole. Well, I think that
• 7:45
Speaker 3: like his running. If he did the running that I do,
• 7:49
Speaker 3: he could do it and then work a full day
• 7:52
Speaker 3: after no problem, whereas I'm like depleted and the like
• 7:56
Speaker 3: bananas and gatorade after I do it right right.
• 8:00
Speaker 1: Well, first of all, I want to congratulate you on
• 8:02
Speaker 1: your body of work, Adam.
• 8:03
  Speaker 3: Thanks.
• 8:04
Speaker 2: You have a huge it's a really impressive body of work,
• 8:07
Speaker 2: and you have a new movie, The whisper Man, which
• 8:10
Speaker 2: has also I want to talk about all the people
• 8:13
Speaker 2: that you've been working with lately, because it's a pretty
• 8:16
Speaker 2: impressive roster. Thanks on severance, you get to work with
• 8:19
Speaker 2: Turturo and these are people I'm talking about only the
• 8:23
Speaker 2: people that have been legends for a long time, never
• 8:25
Speaker 2: mind all of the other people. We get to see
• 8:27
Speaker 2: you interact with, John Jachur, Christopher Walkins, in there, Patricia Arcata,
• 8:32
Speaker 2: all legendary people. And in this movie you get to
• 8:34
Speaker 2: work with de Niro, And I know you've been around
• 8:37
Speaker 2: the block and you've worked with lots of cool people.
• 8:40
Speaker 2: What is it like being on a regular set? And
• 8:44
Speaker 2: that is, you know, where you're the main character of
• 8:47
Speaker 2: a show and these people are supporting that.
• 8:50
Speaker 3: You know, it's not something I get used to, and
• 8:53
Speaker 3: I think that I think it's different. Like my kids
• 8:56
Speaker 3: have grown up now in Los Angeles and grown up
• 9:00
Speaker 3: around show business. So to them, I don't know how
• 9:05
Speaker 3: big of a deal something like that is kind of
• 9:07
Speaker 3: growing up adjacent to and all their front some of
• 9:10
Speaker 3: their friends' parents are in show business stuff. For me,
• 9:14
Speaker 3: I grew up in northern California in a small town
• 9:18
Speaker 3: where I mean it may as well have been in
• 9:20
Speaker 3: Milwaukee or something like. It was so so disconnected from
• 9:25
Speaker 3: show business that like, I kept my ambition to be
• 9:30
Speaker 3: an actor a secret till I was like seventeen years
• 9:33
Speaker 3: old because it was so embarrassing that I wanted to
• 9:37
Speaker 3: you know, like it sounds sounded ridiculous, but it's all
• 9:41
Speaker 3: I thought about. All I cared about, or like movies
• 9:44
Speaker 3: and movie stars and television and stuff. So someone like
• 9:48
Speaker 3: Robert de Niro and getting to be in this movie
• 9:51
Speaker 3: with him was so crazy because he's so fundamental to
• 9:57
Speaker 3: the reasons that I wanted to do this in the
• 9:59
Speaker 3: first place. So I guess the incredibly long answer to
• 10:03
Speaker 3: your simple question is it's still kind of blowing my
• 10:09
Speaker 3: mind and to Turo and Patricia and Christopher Walking. It's
• 10:14
Speaker 3: still wild to me and I'm not I don't think
• 10:17
Speaker 3: I'll ever get used to it.
• 10:19
Speaker 2: But don't you think at this point in your career
• 10:21
Speaker 2: you're more prepared for it than ever, like if it
• 10:24
Speaker 2: had happened earlier in your career. Do you think, first
• 10:28
Speaker 2: of all, I don't want you to get pigeonholed because
• 10:30
Speaker 2: you're playing widow. In Severance, you're a widow, and in
• 10:34
Speaker 2: The Whispering Man, you're a widow. So we have to
• 10:35
Speaker 2: make sure that this doesn't become.
• 10:37
Speaker 1: A Recurrenon stops here, it stops stop, it stops here, Chelsea.
• 10:41
  Speaker 3: That's right.
• 10:43
Speaker 2: So you play a widow in both of these movies,
• 10:45
Speaker 2: and this movie with De Niro's it's a fucking awesome thriller.
• 10:49
Speaker 2: You move back to the town where your wife is from,
• 10:51
Speaker 2: and De Niro is playing your father. Yeah, and there
• 10:55
  Speaker 2: are a lot I think there's a lot of For
• 10:58
Speaker 2: me as a viewer, there are a lot of similarities
• 11:01
Speaker 2: in your ability. I guess it's your emotional availability that
• 11:05
Speaker 2: I'm impressed by as an watching you, because you are
• 11:09
Speaker 2: really like, I know, the opening scene, which is very
• 11:11
Speaker 2: hard to get out of your mind from Severance, you know,
• 11:13
Speaker 2: when you're sitting in that car and you're hysterically crying,
• 11:17
Speaker 2: and then you walk in and you see something shift,
• 11:20
Speaker 2: and that is also like, you know, I was just
• 11:23
Speaker 2: telling him how you feel when you watch it, Like
• 11:25
Speaker 2: as soon as you go up in that elevator, there's
• 11:27
Speaker 2: something that shifts from the viewer. So what you're doing
• 11:30
Speaker 2: is super compelling to even have that impact. And obviously
• 11:34
Speaker 2: the direction and everything involved in that really like lends
• 11:37
Speaker 2: itself to transporting you to a different place. And I
• 11:40
Speaker 2: was telling you it took me a while to get
• 11:44
Speaker 2: into Severance because it is such a different frequency that
• 11:47
  Speaker 2: you're in.
• 11:47
Speaker 1: When you watch that show.
• 11:49
Speaker 2: So I'm very curious to see, like to hear about
• 11:53
Speaker 2: how you handle that like emotional kind of changing your
• 11:57
Speaker 2: presence in the scene because of what you're playing, the
• 12:01
Speaker 2: character you're playing like how does one tap into that,
• 12:04
Speaker 2: Like how do you do that?
• 12:06
Speaker 3: Like going from one to the other eyes.
• 12:08
Speaker 1: Like there's a different look in your eye, and there's
• 12:10
Speaker 1: a different way that you're walking. Yeah slightly. Is that
• 12:13
  Speaker 1: all intentional?
• 12:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it was. It was. It took a
• 12:17
Speaker 3: lot of kind of trial and error, because you know,
• 12:20
Speaker 3: when we were starting, the scripts were great and it
• 12:25
Speaker 3: was this whole different world and everything, but then you're
• 12:28
Speaker 3: there and we're kind of starting from scratch, and Ben
• 12:32
Speaker 3: was really kind of guiding us to find this world
• 12:34
Speaker 3: and find the particular tone of this world. And it
• 12:37
Speaker 3: was a lot of like experimenting and trying different stuff
• 12:40
Speaker 3: to see what would work. And when it came to
• 12:44
Speaker 3: my character, when we were kind of zeroing in on
• 12:47
Speaker 3: it was important because it's not like two characters. It
• 12:51
Speaker 3: sort of is, but it is the same person. It's
• 12:54
Speaker 3: just two different sections of the same person. So it
• 12:57
Speaker 3: had to feel like the same guy, but just like
• 13:01
Speaker 3: different versions. So for me, the biggest difference ended up
• 13:06
Speaker 3: being just like life experience. And so you go down
• 13:10
Speaker 3: in the elevator and it was almost like just scooping
• 13:13
Speaker 3: out life experience because one of them is forty some
• 13:17
Speaker 3: one years old and the other ones like for all
• 13:20
Speaker 3: intents and purposes, like two and a half years old,
• 13:24
Speaker 3: you have a certain your you know, the seventh procedure
• 13:27
Speaker 3: leaves you with certain abilities and awareness about certain things.
• 13:31
Speaker 1: But understand that you're thirsty or that you have to
• 13:33
  Speaker 1: go get a.
• 13:33
Speaker 3: T yeah you know how to like, yeah, get yourself
• 13:38
Speaker 3: food or satiate or whatever. But they've never experienced sleep,
• 13:42
Speaker 3: they've never experienced you know, the sky or whatever. So
• 13:45
Speaker 3: there's a bunch of and your life experience is scooped out.
• 13:48
Speaker 3: So it was kind of like a math problem and
• 13:51
Speaker 3: going from one to the other, and the elevator ended
• 13:53
Speaker 3: up being like you said, like there's something just behind
• 13:57
Speaker 3: the eyes that shifts because it's just a completely different
• 14:01
Speaker 3: life experience, a completely different kind of realm of awareness.
• 14:06
Speaker 3: And I sort of just to try and always trying
• 14:09
Speaker 3: to kind of, you know, you try and make something personal,
• 14:12
Speaker 3: and so kind of a starting point for me was
• 14:16
Speaker 3: when we were starting out, I was just like, Okay,
• 14:18
Speaker 3: maybe the inny is everything I like about myself, Like
• 14:26
Speaker 3: sometimes I can be charming or personable or optimistic, like
• 14:32
Speaker 3: if I'm in the right situation, and I kind of
• 14:36
Speaker 3: can reflect back on how I behaved. I can sometimes
• 14:40
Speaker 3: feel that way, and then the audi could be everything
• 14:44
Speaker 3: I have disdain for about myself, a bad posture, kind
• 14:48
Speaker 3: of a pessimist, anti social, you know, all those things
• 14:52
Speaker 3: that you are constantly pushing up against, and that character,
• 14:57
Speaker 3: that side of the character has sort of indul himself
• 15:01
Speaker 3: in all of the things that have kind of kept
• 15:06
Speaker 3: him from moving on from this horrible period.
• 15:09
Speaker 2: Anyway, I heard you on Amy Poehler's podcast Could Hang,
• 15:13
Speaker 2: where you were talking about the beginning stage, like just
• 15:16
Speaker 2: all of the different things that you've worked on, all
• 15:18
Speaker 2: the big hits you've had, and you were talking about
• 15:22
Speaker 2: losing out that role to Michael C.
• 15:23
Speaker 1: Hall in Six Feet Under.
• 15:26
Speaker 2: It was between him and Michael Sea Hall, which I
• 15:28
Speaker 2: thought was a fascinating story, great tidbit, and then watching
• 15:33
Speaker 2: Michael C. Hall have all that success with six Feet Under. Yeah,
• 15:36
Speaker 2: and you guys were talking about one of the times
• 15:38
Speaker 2: you got really close to something big and that you
• 15:39
Speaker 2: didn't make that and that you couldn't imagine ever being
• 15:42
Speaker 2: in that after seeing Michael C.
• 15:43
  Speaker 1: Hall in it.
• 15:44
Speaker 2: And I would say the same thing to you about severance,
• 15:47
Speaker 2: like no one could play that role but you And
• 15:49
Speaker 2: what you're saying about this lends itself to supporting all
• 15:53
Speaker 2: of that, because this is it's like I wouldn't even
• 15:56
Speaker 2: imagine reading that script and understanding what was happening. Yeah, yeah,
• 15:59
Speaker 2: didn't you have to have a lot of conversations about
• 16:01
Speaker 2: it or did you not?
• 16:03
Speaker 3: Well, when I first heard the idea, it was way
• 16:05
Speaker 3: before there was even a script around. Ben just kind
• 16:08
Speaker 3: of told me the idea about like you go to
• 16:11
Speaker 3: work and you don't know who you are in the
• 16:13
Speaker 3: outside world. You only know what's there, and then when
• 16:15
Speaker 3: you leave work, you have no idea what you did
• 16:17
Speaker 3: at work. And I just thought that was such a
• 16:19
Speaker 3: cool idea. So I couldn't get that. It sounded like
• 16:23
Speaker 3: like a really good Twilight Zone episode or something, you know.
• 16:26
Speaker 3: But yes, as we kind of dove in and got
• 16:29
Speaker 3: more and more detail about not only the circumstances of
• 16:32
Speaker 3: the procedure, but the company and the lore and all
• 16:38
Speaker 3: of that stuff, Yes, it was constant questions. And Dan Erickson,
• 16:41
Speaker 3: who created the show, was around and he could sort
• 16:44
Speaker 3: of explain things, and he has an answer for everything,
• 16:48
Speaker 3: and it's kind of thought everything through. So yeah, it
• 16:50
  Speaker 3: was a lot of it's dense. It's a lot of
• 16:53
Speaker 3: information and everything that you see and hear on that
• 16:57
Speaker 3: show is there for a reason and has a lot
• 17:01
Speaker 3: has a story behind it. Yeah.
• 17:04
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's pretty fascinating.
• 17:06
Speaker 2: It really makes you think, It really makes you focus,
• 17:10
Speaker 2: and it really makes you think. We were saying that
• 17:12
Speaker 2: these are one of the shows that you have to watch,
• 17:14
Speaker 2: and your phone really has to be away.
• 17:16
Speaker 1: You can't be diddling. You can't be.
• 17:18
Speaker 2: Doling yourself, and you can't be duling your phone.
• 17:25
Speaker 1: Okay, so now let's shift to the whisperer man. So
• 17:29
Speaker 1: this is a great story, And like, I love the
• 17:32
Speaker 1: idea of being a single dad, not because your wife died,
• 17:36
Speaker 1: but I love the I just like watching male characters.
• 17:39
Speaker 2: I think it's really nice to see a single father,
• 17:42
Speaker 2: you know, someone who's like, it's their entire onus is
• 17:44
Speaker 2: to provide for this kid and take care of them emotionally,
• 17:47
Speaker 2: which your character really does, which I imagine you're a
• 17:50
Speaker 2: lot like in real life. I mean, everyone has always
• 17:53
Speaker 2: amazing things to say about you. I know you a
• 17:55
Speaker 2: little bit, and you are definitely one of the good guys.
• 17:58
Speaker 3: That's the reputation you very very nice of you saying.
• 18:01
Speaker 2: So you and your family should be proud of yourself,
• 18:04
Speaker 2: thank you. But when you're dealing with that kind of
• 18:07
Speaker 2: level of emotion, which you do in severance as well,
• 18:09
Speaker 2: but especially in the Whisperman, and you're dealing with that, like,
• 18:12
Speaker 2: what are you tapping into?
• 18:14
Speaker 3: I mean, the thing I thought was interesting about the
• 18:17
Speaker 3: script and kind of James Ashcroft, who directed it's something
• 18:21
Speaker 3: he was really interested in too, is that this is
• 18:24
Speaker 3: a single dad who's kind of struggling. He wasn't the one,
• 18:30
Speaker 3: His wife was really the one who did the lion's
• 18:33
Speaker 3: share of parenting, and now here he is and he's
• 18:38
Speaker 3: trying his best to connect with his son and provide
• 18:42
Speaker 3: for his son, and he is he's having a hard time.
• 18:47
Speaker 3: I mean, he's doing it, but it is a struggle.
• 18:51
Speaker 3: And in the midst of trying to do this right
• 18:56
Speaker 3: and figure out how to do this, his son disappears.
• 19:01
Speaker 3: So I thought that was interesting that it wasn't like
• 19:05
Speaker 3: some idyllic version of single parenthood. And then that you've
• 19:11
Speaker 3: seen a lot I've seen a lot in movies where
• 19:14
Speaker 3: everything's great and perfect, things couldn't be going better, and
• 19:17
Speaker 3: then this tragedy strikes. Things are a bit of a
• 19:21
Speaker 3: struggle out of the gate, and so this horrible thing
• 19:26
Speaker 3: that happens couldn't have come at a worse time. You know,
• 19:31
Speaker 3: working with MJ, with this kid who this wonderful actor
• 19:35
Speaker 3: who played my son was really wonderful, and he was
• 19:41
Speaker 3: so available and being a parent, you know, especially working
• 19:48
Speaker 3: with someone who's ten years old. I believe he was
• 19:50
Speaker 3: ten years old when we made the movie. I miss
• 19:53
Speaker 3: that age so much. With my kids. They're nineteen and
• 19:55
Speaker 3: seventeen now, so they're essentially adults. So working with him
• 20:00
Speaker 3: and remembering what it was like to have, you know,
• 20:04
Speaker 3: ten year old and eight year old or whatever was
• 20:06
Speaker 3: really really it was easy to kind of tap into
• 20:10
Speaker 3: that and feel those kind of feelings and that anxiety
• 20:15
Speaker 3: and the constant worry you have for this kid. I
• 20:21
Speaker 3: mean that never goes away, but at that age it's
• 20:23
Speaker 3: a particularly tender, tender time.
• 20:26
Speaker 1: It doesn't go away. No, you're always worried for you.
• 20:29
Speaker 3: Oh my god. Every time my kids leave the house,
• 20:33
Speaker 3: it's like, oh my god, it's embarrassing because it's like,
• 20:38
Speaker 3: be careful fucking driving, like Jesus Christ, don't like be late,
• 20:45
Speaker 3: don't fucking drive sixty miles an hour down a neighbor
• 20:50
Speaker 3: like don't just slow down and be careful, don't look
• 20:53
Speaker 3: at your phone, you know all that stuff.
• 20:55
Speaker 1: Do your kids respect you?
• 20:59
Speaker 3: Oh my god, no, that would be the worst thing
• 21:07
Speaker 3: to have kids that don't respect you at all.
• 21:10
Speaker 2: Like I did not respect my parents at all. As
• 21:13
Speaker 2: soon as I met them, I'm.
• 21:14
Speaker 3: Like, uh uh yeah, no thanks.
• 21:17
Speaker 2: And the teenage years like I mean, I don't want
• 21:20
Speaker 2: I would never want to put I wouldn't.
• 21:22
Speaker 1: The karma that I'm due for the.
• 21:24
Speaker 2: Way I treated my parents would become full circle that
• 21:26
Speaker 2: I was like, there's no way I can have children
• 21:28
Speaker 2: because it will just be health.
• 21:30
Speaker 3: Oh my god. I was such an asshole. I remember
• 21:33
Speaker 3: my mom would if I had like dirty dishes in
• 21:35
Speaker 3: the sink, she would ask me over and over again,
• 21:39
Speaker 3: do your dish, and I would just ignore it. She
• 21:42
Speaker 3: would bring the dishes into my room and put them
• 21:44
Speaker 3: on my bed and I would just take them put
• 21:47
Speaker 3: them on the floor, and I wouldn't do it, Like
• 21:49
  Speaker 3: what an asshole?
• 21:50
Speaker 1: Yeah that is an asshole. Brothers and sisters.
• 21:53
Speaker 3: I had an older brother and sister. Yeah right, the youngest, yeah.
• 21:56
Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah. They were the worst ones.
• 21:58
Speaker 1: I'm the youngest of my family as well.
• 22:00
Speaker 3: Yeah, how many brothers in society.
• 22:02
Speaker 2: There's six of us all together, so I was number six.
• 22:04
Speaker 2: So nobody was even trying to get me to do dishes.
• 22:07
Speaker 2: They were just like, just shut the fuck up for
• 22:09
Speaker 2: two seconds, please, you have like a free passay. They
• 22:11
Speaker 2: were like, if you could just go in your room
• 22:13
Speaker 2: and be quiet for an hour, we're fine.
• 22:15
Speaker 1: We'll do your dishes for you.
• 22:16
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, yeah yeah.
• 22:18
Speaker 2: So how does your what tell me about parenting? I
• 22:21
Speaker 2: want to know, like, what has surprised you? What has
• 22:23
Speaker 2: surprised you about your wife becoming a mother? I know
• 22:27
Speaker 2: it's been a long time, or maybe what surprises you
• 22:29
Speaker 2: about your wife being a mother that you.
• 22:31
Speaker 1: Didn't know about her before you had children? Anything.
• 22:36
  Speaker 3: I think that she she's incredible, and I don't think
• 22:43
Speaker 3: it's a surprise necessarily that she was or is I'm
• 22:49
Speaker 3: thinking about the kids being really little right now. How
• 22:53
Speaker 3: adept she was right out of the gate for uh
• 22:58
Speaker 3: being a parent and was really the person I followed.
• 23:04
Speaker 3: I really kind of looked to her to figure out
• 23:09
Speaker 3: how to do this. It's really hard. It's a lot
• 23:11
Speaker 3: of really it's really complicated and hard, particularly as they
• 23:16
Speaker 3: get older. But I always had her as a role
• 23:22
  Speaker 3: model for parenting.
• 23:23
Speaker 1: Truly, she took the lead in the beginning.
• 23:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I guess it depends on what kind
• 23:29
Speaker 3: of aspect of it you're you're talking about, But yeah,
• 23:33
Speaker 3: I would always follow Naomi's lead. I think she is
• 23:39
Speaker 3: an incredible parent, and any any we have incredible Our
• 23:45
Speaker 3: kids are incredible people, and like I said, they're like
• 23:47
Speaker 3: grown ups now, it's so crazy, and they are incredible people.
• 23:51
Speaker 3: And I entirely credit her with that. I'm lucky that
• 23:55
Speaker 3: I grew up with great parents as well, but I'm
• 24:00
Speaker 3: I'm consistently still just blown away by what an incredible,
• 24:06
Speaker 3: incredible mother mother she has been.
• 24:08
Speaker 2: And still do you think that's just being a female instinctually,
• 24:12
Speaker 2: like having a maternal instinct, I.
• 24:13
Speaker 3: Think that's part of it. But I think she's she
• 24:16
Speaker 3: has a real emotional availability and really really perceptive and
• 24:22
Speaker 3: intellectually she's brilliant, and I think that really comes in
• 24:28
Speaker 3: handy too, like she's always five steps ahead of all
• 24:33
  Speaker 3: three of us.
• 24:35
Speaker 1: So I guess the next question is does she respect you?
• 24:37
Speaker 3: That's a great question which we're going to need to ask.
• 24:41
Speaker 3: You got to get her in here to find out.
• 24:44
Speaker 1: How did you two meet.
• 24:45
Speaker 3: We met at Kat in the Fiddle. Do you remember
• 24:47
  Speaker 3: that bar? Oh?
• 24:48
Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, yeah, I used to go there with
• 24:53
  Speaker 2: all the comedians.
• 24:55
Speaker 3: Totally after what club were, Well.
• 24:59
Speaker 2: There were all these like little clubs that weren't like
• 25:01
Speaker 2: the main clubs like Comedy Store and Improv that were
• 25:03
Speaker 2: over on that side of town. There was like Mixed Nuts,
• 25:06
Speaker 2: which was on Pico and Librea, but there was clubs
• 25:09
Speaker 2: over there like yeah, I forget some of the names
• 25:11
Speaker 2: of them, but there's always these small little rooms where
• 25:13
  Speaker 2: you could go.
• 25:13
Speaker 3: Yes, that's right, and then go east.
• 25:15
Speaker 1: Huh yeah, east into like yeah.
• 25:17
Speaker 3: Yeah, we met there because everyone smoked back then, and
• 25:21
Speaker 3: that was the best bar you could go in and
• 25:23
Speaker 3: play darts being outside and smoke people.
• 25:25
Speaker 1: People are smoking as back by the way are smoking.
• 25:28
  Speaker 3: I can't believe, dude, It's everywhere. I know.
• 25:31
  Speaker 2: I just don't understand. It's like what we've we've lost
• 25:33
  Speaker 2: all information.
• 25:34
Speaker 4: Because the kids love the nineties, I know.
• 25:36
Speaker 3: Is that what it is? Because well, here's the thing
• 25:39
Speaker 3: is that vaping obviously took hold for a while, but
• 25:43
Speaker 3: then everyone came down so hard on vaping right that
• 25:47
Speaker 3: all these kids were addicted to nicotine. They're like Okay,
• 25:50
Speaker 3: I guess we can't vape anymore, may as well just
• 25:52
Speaker 3: go to the source, right, and it looks cooler, so
• 25:56
  Speaker 3: let's just start smoking. It's crazy, You're right, it's everywhere.
• 26:00
Speaker 3: Were you ever a smoker?
• 26:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, of course, I've done everything.
• 26:02
Speaker 3: Oh god, it was the best.
• 26:04
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 26:04
Speaker 2: I don't smoke anymore because I'm too old to smoke
• 26:07
  Speaker 2: like it's cool.
• 26:08
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 26:08
Speaker 2: In Europe, once in a while i'll have a cigarette
• 26:10
Speaker 2: because I don't believe you can get cancer there. And
• 26:13
Speaker 2: if I'm on vacation and other people are smoking or figure,
• 26:16
Speaker 2: you know, okay, but I never go. I don't smoke here.
• 26:19
Speaker 2: I would just I just find cigarettes to be gross
• 26:22
Speaker 2: in the way that you should have I think probably
• 26:25
Speaker 2: were similar ages. Okay, so back to how you met
• 26:27
Speaker 2: your wife. Did you just throw in a piece of nicotine?
• 26:29
Speaker 2: Come while we're talking about nicotine by way, Okay, I
• 26:32
  Speaker 2: just wanted.
• 26:33
Speaker 3: To still that I haven't smoked a cigarette, probably in
• 26:37
Speaker 3: twelve years or something.
• 26:39
Speaker 1: And okay, so you were a smoker too, I sure was.
• 26:42
Speaker 3: I loved it. Yeah, Oh my god. An actor in
• 26:46
Speaker 3: the nineties in Los Angeles.
• 26:48
Speaker 2: I see, yes, what else would you do if you run
• 26:51
Speaker 2: your fingers through your hair and smoke a cigarette, and
• 26:53
Speaker 2: you'll liberate over how you're going to deliver a scene.
• 26:56
Speaker 3: You should see my headshots from like nineteen ninety five.
• 26:59
Speaker 1: Oh, I can only imagine.
• 27:01
Speaker 3: And I auditioned for all the scream movies, and I
• 27:03
Speaker 3: know what you did all that stuff. I was here
• 27:06
Speaker 3: trying to, you know, get something. So it was that
• 27:09
Speaker 3: whole skeet o rich in, that whole era. Yeah, of
• 27:13
  Speaker 3: like actors.
• 27:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, we had Dave franco On recently, who was telling
• 27:18
Speaker 2: us that you were together when you guys met the Pope.
• 27:21
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, isn't that crazy. Yeah, it's one of those
• 27:25
  Speaker 3: pope trips.
• 27:25
Speaker 1: No, he hasn't requested me yet.
• 27:27
Speaker 3: You should meet the boat.
• 27:28
Speaker 1: Did you get requested?
• 27:30
  Speaker 2: I mean I got invited. That's a that's a request.
• 27:33
Speaker 2: I guess that's what Dave said too. He was like,
• 27:35
Speaker 2: I couldn't believe. We couldn't believe we were going to
• 27:37
  Speaker 2: meet him.
• 27:38
Speaker 3: It was strange, but you know whatever. Interesting.
• 27:42
Speaker 1: I'm more interested though, in your wife and the cat
• 27:44
  Speaker 1: and the fiddle.
• 27:45
Speaker 3: Cat and the fiddle. Okay, so we met at the
• 27:46
Speaker 3: Cat and the Fiddle. I saw her from across the
• 27:50
Speaker 3: bar that outside area. Remember that found I was like,
• 27:53
Speaker 3: I want to meet her and my friend I was
• 27:56
Speaker 3: doing a play in the midst of doing a play
• 27:59
Speaker 3: and the friend was with in the play. He was like,
• 28:02
Speaker 3: I know her friend and he was a brit and
• 28:07
Speaker 3: he walks over to his friend that they knew each
• 28:09
Speaker 3: other from the UK, and she introduces me to Naomi
• 28:15
Speaker 3: and Naomi said is like nice to meet you, and
• 28:17
Speaker 3: then she's like, I have to go, and she just
• 28:19
Speaker 3: left because she did not she heard I was an
• 28:25
Speaker 3: actor and immediately was like no way and just left.
• 28:29
Speaker 3: Smart Smart. But then I got my friend to talk
• 28:33
Speaker 3: to his friend and get them to come to the
• 28:35
Speaker 3: play we were in. It was down at the Taper downtown,
• 28:39
Speaker 3: the Mark Tape or Form, and they came to that
• 28:42
Speaker 3: play and it was on closing night, and afterwards there
• 28:46
Speaker 3: was like a closing night party and that's where we
• 28:49
Speaker 3: started chatting. And we went to a an after party
• 28:54
Speaker 3: at Amanda Donajo's house. Do you remember that actor Amanda.
• 29:00
Speaker 3: We'd recognize her and I don't know how it ended
• 29:02
Speaker 3: up at her house because she was not in the play,
• 29:05
Speaker 3: but we were in the backyard and there was a
• 29:08
Speaker 3: Golden Retriever and just the three of us sat there
• 29:11
Speaker 3: for like three hours just talking. The dog did not talk,
• 29:16
Speaker 3: but Naomi and I did.
• 29:17
Speaker 2: Thank you for that, yeah, yeah, yeah, And thank you
• 29:20
Speaker 2: to the listeners and thanking you on their behalf. Clarification,
• 29:24
Speaker 2: no talking to the viewers and the listeners. This is
• 29:27
Speaker 2: also on Netflix so people can watch through and see
• 29:29
  Speaker 2: your air.
• 29:30
Speaker 3: Believe me, if the dog talked, that would have been
• 29:33
  Speaker 3: the headline.
• 29:34
Speaker 1: Yeah, well that yeah, exact exactly. Yeah, of course.
• 29:37
Speaker 2: And now you guys run a production company together. You
• 29:40
Speaker 2: have a production company, you work together. How long have
• 29:42
Speaker 2: you guys been working together.
• 29:44
Speaker 3: We've been working together since like two thousand twelve about Wow, Yeah,
• 29:52
  Speaker 3: it's been a while.
• 29:53
  Speaker 1: That's nice.
• 29:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, right, yeah, it's it's great. I mean we did
• 29:57
Speaker 3: it sort of out of necessity. We made this series
• 30:02
Speaker 3: of specials for Adult Swim where we recreated opening credit
• 30:07
Speaker 3: sequences for eighties television shows Shot for shot, we made
• 30:12
Speaker 3: these opening credit sequences, so and I was directing them,
• 30:17
Speaker 3: she was producing them, and we created it together. So
• 30:20
Speaker 3: we needed to come up with a company, and we
• 30:23
Speaker 3: came up with a name and did everything and then
• 30:25
Speaker 3: it went really well working together because you never know
• 30:29
Speaker 3: how that's going to it could be dicey, but ended
• 30:32
Speaker 3: up being great, and so we just kept going and
• 30:35
Speaker 3: kept doing it and we're now going on like over
• 30:39
Speaker 3: ten years. It's wild.
• 30:44
Speaker 2: So let me turn that question about parenting back to you.
• 30:48
Speaker 2: Has there what was the most surprising thing that you
• 30:51
Speaker 2: found out about yourself as a parent.
• 30:56
Speaker 3: You know what's interesting is that when you there's a
• 30:59
Speaker 3: weird and it's all cliche. Everything is going to say
• 31:02
Speaker 3: is a cliche because everything that I know, it always
• 31:06
Speaker 3: sounds cliche when people talk about parenting. But when you're
• 31:10
Speaker 3: raising kids, whatever age the kid is at, you are
• 31:14
Speaker 3: immediately start flashing back to memories when you were at
• 31:18
Speaker 3: that age, and you start remembering thing things, And maybe
• 31:21
  Speaker 3: it's a it's part of a process of just trying
• 31:24
Speaker 3: to empathize with the kids and trying to see the
• 31:29
Speaker 3: world through their eyes. But for whatever reason, I was
• 31:33
Speaker 3: kind of flashing back to everything and in my life
• 31:37
Speaker 3: growing up as a kid. And I'm glad that happened
• 31:41
Speaker 3: because it's it's good to be able to kind of
• 31:44
Speaker 3: see yourself through the end and and and and you
• 31:48
Speaker 3: really kind of start to see whatever patterns you may
• 31:51
Speaker 3: not want to repeat with your kids.
• 31:55
Speaker 1: In a parenting sense, or like.
• 31:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, and I guess the thing, if I'm thinking about
• 32:01
Speaker 3: what would surprise me, I guess I mean there's the
• 32:04
Speaker 3: cliche thing of you never knew you could love something
• 32:07
Speaker 3: so much, which is totally true. I think that I've
• 32:12
Speaker 3: just been consistently surprised and sort of amazed at them
• 32:19
Speaker 3: and the people that they've become, and the young woman
• 32:24
Speaker 3: and young man that that they are now, because you
• 32:28
Speaker 3: don't have much perspective on it until you really you
• 32:32
Speaker 3: really have to step back because you know you're in
• 32:34
Speaker 3: the midst of it, and so you don't see them growing.
• 32:38
Speaker 3: It's just happening. And it's not until you look at
• 32:41
Speaker 3: a photo or whatever really step back. And then to
• 32:44
Speaker 3: really step back and kind of see them as formed
• 32:48
Speaker 3: people now is something that never stops kind of amazing me.
• 32:53
Speaker 3: And if I take pride in anything, it's that it's
• 32:58
Speaker 3: that they've that they've turned out it's all right, and
• 33:00
Speaker 3: turned out to be terrific people.
• 33:03
Speaker 1: Are they in the business.
• 33:05
Speaker 3: My daughter is an incredible actor in theater at school,
• 33:09
Speaker 3: and my son has no interest.
• 33:13
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 33:14
Speaker 2: I had a boyfriend who once described it as wondrous.
• 33:17
Speaker 2: He said the word wondrous, and I had never heard
• 33:18
Speaker 2: anyone use that word before in.
• 33:20
Speaker 3: A sentience kids growing up, or to just.
• 33:22
Speaker 2: Having children and seeing these little versions of yourself and
• 33:26
Speaker 2: then seeing them kind of just gather all of their
• 33:30
Speaker 2: information and tools that life has to offer, some of
• 33:33
Speaker 2: which you provide, and some that they get on their
• 33:35
Speaker 2: own independent of you, and that they come together and
• 33:39
Speaker 2: they form their own opinions, and then they become these
• 33:41
Speaker 2: little people with their own opinions, and sometimes those opinions
• 33:44
Speaker 2: are different than yours.
• 33:46
Speaker 1: And you're like, Hi, wait, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, what's
• 33:48
  Speaker 1: going on here?
• 33:49
  Speaker 3: Yeah?
• 33:50
Speaker 2: So, and especially in a town like this, because raising
• 33:52
Speaker 2: kids in LA cannot be easy.
• 33:54
  Speaker 1: No, I mean I don't. Yeah, that's just seems.
• 33:58
Speaker 3: Like, why do you say that?
• 34:00
Speaker 1: It seems like it's too much industry, too much, you know.
• 34:04
Speaker 2: I feel that way as an adult when I spend
• 34:06
Speaker 2: too much time in LA. So I can only imagine
• 34:08
Speaker 2: as a parent how it must feel to have so
• 34:10
Speaker 2: much exposure. I mean, it's it's good to have the
• 34:12
Speaker 2: exposure because it kind of lessens your or mitigates your
• 34:16
Speaker 2: la la la about it, your attitude, but also at
• 34:19
Speaker 2: the same time, it's very rarefied. Yes, it's not really
• 34:23
Speaker 2: representative of the real world.
• 34:24
  Speaker 3: That's right, that's right, I wish. I mean, if you
• 34:27
Speaker 3: want to have a career in show business, I think
• 34:30
Speaker 3: it's it's beneficial to grow up in show business because
• 34:34
Speaker 3: it is completely demystified. Yeah, and because I'm still nervous
• 34:37
Speaker 3: around Robert de Niro whoever. But if you grow up
• 34:41
Speaker 3: in it, like I would imagine, if my daughter ends
• 34:44
Speaker 3: up wanting to pursue a career in show business, she's
• 34:48
Speaker 3: going to have a leg up, not because of being
• 34:51
Speaker 3: you know, a NEPO baby or whatever. I think all
• 34:54
Speaker 3: of that is can only take you so far if
• 34:57
Speaker 3: you're really if you really want something that it's gonna last,
• 35:00
Speaker 3: you have to have the goods and the chops or whatever.
• 35:05
Speaker 1: And in many cases you have to work even.
• 35:06
Speaker 3: Harder to give yourself. That's true.
• 35:09
Speaker 2: I know plenty of people that have had that. It's like, oh,
• 35:11
Speaker 2: they rejected because oh, that's so and So's daughter. We
• 35:13
  Speaker 2: can't hire that person. You know, It's like there's it's
• 35:16
Speaker 2: not like it's all sunshine and roses over in that
• 35:19
  Speaker 2: department totally.
• 35:21
Speaker 3: But you at least are once you're kind of there
• 35:24
Speaker 3: doing something. You're not going to be completely freaked out
• 35:27
  Speaker 3: by everything.
• 35:28
Speaker 1: Wait, did you just hear my dog talk? My dog
• 35:30
  Speaker 1: just talk?
• 35:31
Speaker 3: What did he say?
• 35:31
Speaker 2: He just it was a loud snore, but he I
• 35:33
Speaker 2: think there was a syllable in there.
• 35:35
  Speaker 1: I think he said, I can't.
• 35:37
Speaker 3: It can't with me.
• 35:38
  Speaker 1: I can't think I think.
• 35:41
  Speaker 3: Enough from this.
• 35:43
Speaker 1: That's what he said.
• 35:44
Speaker 3: I got that vibe when I came in earlier. Yeah.
• 35:47
Speaker 2: Yeah, were you nervous when you did your scene with
• 35:49
Speaker 2: de Niro or had you have done anything with him
• 35:51
Speaker 2: prior to the Whisperman No?
• 35:54
Speaker 3: I I was nervous the whole time. I did not
• 35:56
Speaker 3: get used to being around him at all.
• 35:59
  Speaker 1: You him, I don't, I mean, I've no, I don't
• 36:02
  Speaker 1: know him.
• 36:03
Speaker 3: Have you met it?
• 36:04
Speaker 1: I fucking love him?
• 36:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I the best.
• 36:07
Speaker 1: Who doesn't love Robert de Nier?
• 36:08
Speaker 2: Now, first of all, he's like eighty years old, and
• 36:10
Speaker 2: he's got his shit together, like he's fucking chugging along
• 36:15
  Speaker 2: in that movie.
• 36:16
Speaker 1: Yeah, he shows him like physical. I was like, oh,
• 36:18
Speaker 1: look at him, pretty spry, like a spring chicken.
• 36:22
Speaker 2: I just like his attitude. I like that he calls
• 36:24
Speaker 2: out bullshit all the time.
• 36:25
Speaker 3: And it also Trump.
• 36:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that. Who doesn't love that?
• 36:28
Speaker 2: I mean, and it goes off, you know, we need
• 36:30
Speaker 2: more people doing that in his position.
• 36:32
Speaker 1: But yeah, I'm obsessed with Robert Denier. I've found him.
• 36:35
Speaker 2: I've seen every single movie he's ever been in, and
• 36:37
  Speaker 2: it's nice. I feel like we're in living during a
• 36:40
Speaker 2: time where he's more accessible than he was, like in
• 36:42
Speaker 2: the seventies and eighties before, you know, because he was
• 36:46
Speaker 2: like you know, actors like that were harder to see,
• 36:49
Speaker 2: and now they're more pervasive, like they take on more jobs.
• 36:52
Speaker 1: The movies are TV, TV is the movies, that kind
• 36:54
Speaker 1: of thing. So what how did you handle your nerves
• 36:57
  Speaker 1: with him?
• 36:59
Speaker 3: Well, just for some background, I had Robert. I would
• 37:03
Speaker 3: cut pictures of Robert de Niro out of like Premiere
• 37:06
Speaker 3: magazine and put them in my locker. I had them
• 37:09
Speaker 3: on my wall in my bedroom. I even Tricky is ready.
• 37:15
Speaker 3: I even took a picture of him, Remember the tattoos
• 37:19
Speaker 3: in Cape Fear. I had a picture of him on
• 37:21
Speaker 3: the CD tray that came out of my CD player,
• 37:26
Speaker 3: so the him from Cape Fear would come out at you.
• 37:30
Speaker 3: If when the tray opened, I was like, people would
• 37:33
Speaker 3: be like, what are you doing, like, you need to
• 37:36
Speaker 3: calm down about Robert Robert de Niro. So I you know,
• 37:42
Speaker 3: when you're there with the person and they're talking to
• 37:45
Speaker 3: you and everything they're doing is so fundamental, Like you know,
• 37:50
Speaker 3: like you said, you've seen everything that he's done. So
• 37:54
Speaker 3: it's so strange to actually be there and then have
• 38:00
Speaker 3: to work and not make a fool of yourself.
• 38:06
Speaker 2: Like are you the type of person that wants him
• 38:08
Speaker 2: to respect you? Or are you trying to get him
• 38:10
Speaker 2: to like you? Or are you the type of person
• 38:13
Speaker 2: that wants to make him laugh.
• 38:15
Speaker 3: I'm I just want to make sure the scenes are
• 38:19
Speaker 3: working and I'm doing my part there. That's it. That's it,
• 38:23
Speaker 3: because everything else it's Robert de Niro. He's one of
• 38:28
Speaker 3: the great actors that we've ever had, one of the
• 38:30
Speaker 3: greatest actors we've ever ever had. So I'm not going
• 38:35
Speaker 3: to dance around and try and try and get him
• 38:37
Speaker 3: to like me. It's way too intimidating to do that.
• 38:41
Speaker 3: In fact, there was one time when I was talking
• 38:43
Speaker 3: to Naomi on the phone and I was like, hey,
• 38:48
Speaker 3: so I was thinking, there's this I have this question
• 38:51
Speaker 3: about the Irishman, and I wanted to ask Bob about it,
• 38:56
  Speaker 3: and I think tomorrow we're working together, I think I
• 38:59
Speaker 3: might find chance to to to approach him. And there's
• 39:04
Speaker 3: this thing I've been wondering about. And she's like, Adam,
• 39:08
Speaker 3: you are starring in a movie with him. You're not
• 39:11
Speaker 3: like an extra or you have one scene you can
• 39:16
Speaker 3: ask him about the Irishman. What are you doing. I'm like, yeah,
• 39:19
Speaker 3: you're you're right, I'm in the thing with him, And
• 39:23
Speaker 3: so I did. I asked him about the Irishman and
• 39:26
Speaker 3: he was like, yeah, great, and he's just he's the
• 39:29
Speaker 3: Actually such a sweet, accessible person is what you come
• 39:34
Speaker 3: to find out. So, uh, it was. It was lovely,
• 39:38
Speaker 3: but I never ever got used to it.
• 39:41
Speaker 2: Well, you know, I know you did like podcasts on
• 39:43
Speaker 2: YouTube like some other bands, right, Springsteen did you do?
• 39:47
Speaker 3: We did that. We did YouTube, ari Em, Talking Heads
• 39:51
  Speaker 3: and Springsteen.
• 39:52
Speaker 1: So four of those, yeah, because that would Robert Geniro
• 39:55
Speaker 1: would be a good subject matter for a podcast. Also,
• 39:57
Speaker 1: oh yeah, you're right, really, I mean for film buffs totally.
• 40:00
  Speaker 1: I love that.
• 40:01
Speaker 2: So okay, out of those four bands, who is your
• 40:04
Speaker 2: I just gave you your next podcast idea.
• 40:06
Speaker 1: You're welcome. So out of those four bands, do you
• 40:09
Speaker 1: have a favorite out.
• 40:10
Speaker 3: Of r em. Really, yeah, they're my favorite.
• 40:13
Speaker 1: Out of all of them.
• 40:14
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, okay, yeah yeah yeah.
• 40:16
Speaker 1: Were you in a video with Rim?
• 40:18
Speaker 3: Yeah? I was an extra in a video of theirs?
• 40:21
  Speaker 1: Oh really?
• 40:22
Speaker 3: We like one? Tic like the chance to go be
• 40:26
Speaker 3: in the video on the radio me and my friends. Huh,
• 40:30
Speaker 3: I drove down here and did that, like in nineteen
• 40:33
  Speaker 3: ninety two.
• 40:33
Speaker 1: I believe is how many RM concerts have you been to?
• 40:37
Speaker 3: Man a lot. I've saw them so many times. I
• 40:41
Speaker 3: think they're the best American bands.
• 40:43
Speaker 1: Wow, that's quite an endorsement.
• 40:45
Speaker 3: I know. Good right. Are you not a fan? You
• 40:48
  Speaker 3: seem surprised.
• 40:49
  Speaker 1: Well, I'm not a fan. I just they're not my
• 40:52
Speaker 1: I love Springsteen. I love you too. I like Rim.
• 40:55
Speaker 1: I've just never been like an uber fan of M.
• 40:58
Speaker 1: But was the podcast.
• 41:00
Speaker 3: You're the generation that grew up with all those?
• 41:02
Speaker 2: Yeah right, well yeah, Springsteen I came into later in
• 41:06
Speaker 2: life because somebody took me to a Springsteen concert in Oslo, Norway,
• 41:11
Speaker 2: and I was like.
• 41:12
Speaker 1: What the holy shit incredible. I cannot believe this man.
• 41:16
Speaker 2: He is the coolest of all time. He's another one
• 41:19
Speaker 2: you know who speaks up and I love that. It's
• 41:22
Speaker 2: all these old guys.
• 41:23
Speaker 3: The fact that his tour right now, he's going around.
• 41:26
Speaker 1: Yeah talking about have you seen him recently perform?
• 41:28
Speaker 3: I saw him like three years ago is amazing.
• 41:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's like he's seventy five, I think now seventy five, yeah,
• 41:36
Speaker 2: seventy five and he performs for three hours and you two,
• 41:41
Speaker 2: you've seen a bunch, right. It's nice to see all
• 41:43
  Speaker 2: these kind.
• 41:44
Speaker 1: Of old guys up there fucking rocking it out and
• 41:48
Speaker 1: like showing people how it's done.
• 41:49
  Speaker 3: Yea.
• 41:50
Speaker 2: And also emblematic of the fact that we obviously have
• 41:53
Speaker 2: access to medicines and treatments that we didn't many many
• 41:56
  Speaker 2: years ago.
• 41:57
Speaker 1: That these guys are like out there blowing it up
• 41:59
Speaker 1: and dancing. It's pretty cool.
• 42:00
Speaker 2: But when I remember seeing Bruce Springsteen for the first time,
• 42:03
Speaker 2: I've seen you too a bunch of times.
• 42:05
  Speaker 1: And talking Heads.
• 42:06
  Speaker 2: I love the talking Heads. Yeah, I don't think I
• 42:09
Speaker 2: ever saw them in concert.
• 42:10
Speaker 3: I didn't either, Oh you did it well, they broke
• 42:12
Speaker 3: up like in like nineteen eighty nine or nineteen something
• 42:16
Speaker 3: like that, so it was no, I never did. Unfortunately,
• 42:19
Speaker 3: I've seen David Byrne though. He's incredible.
• 42:21
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's still kicking it. He's kicking it around and
• 42:24
  Speaker 2: it's having a resurgence.
• 42:25
Speaker 3: Amazing. It's a great show to see him, see him perform.
• 42:29
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That music is so evocative.
• 42:31
Speaker 2: Talking Heads specifically takes you to a time told Bruce
• 42:34
Speaker 2: Springsteen is like, you know, his library is so long,
• 42:37
Speaker 2: and so is you. Two's that there's songs that hit
• 42:40
Speaker 2: you for certain times, but talking Heads like takes you to.
• 42:44
Speaker 1: The moment wherever you were when you heard that rim too.
• 42:49
Speaker 1: Ari yam for sure, I remember all of that. Are
• 42:56
Speaker 1: we ready for some callers?
• 42:57
Speaker 2: We're so ready you've been to therapy, because we'll have
• 43:03
Speaker 2: one that's just an email.
• 43:05
Speaker 4: We'll like save your hair like a couple more minutes.
• 43:09
Speaker 1: You could also put them on like this, you want
• 43:12
  Speaker 1: to ruin your.
• 43:14
Speaker 4: Hay one ear well, this is just a quickie. This
• 43:17
Speaker 4: is our one drink question. B says, I'm trying to
• 43:21
Speaker 4: convince my best friends, a couple to go on vacation
• 43:24
Speaker 4: to Mexico with us this summer. The problem is they
• 43:26
Speaker 4: have not spent one night with both of them away
• 43:29
Speaker 4: from their kids. Their kids are seven and eight. They
• 43:32
Speaker 4: can afford to sitter. How do we convince them to
• 43:34
Speaker 4: take some time away being adults.
• 43:36
Speaker 3: Be they's seven and eight and never been away from
• 43:39
Speaker 3: their kids. Oh my god, they have to do that.
• 43:42
Speaker 3: They have to, Yeah, they have to. I think you
• 43:46
Speaker 3: know what might help is if they find an example
• 43:50
Speaker 3: of someone that does that often, like once a month
• 43:53
Speaker 3: they take a couple of days away from their kids
• 43:56
Speaker 3: or every few months or whatever it is, and present
• 43:59
Speaker 3: it to them as doesn't this look fun?
• 44:03
Speaker 2: Also, there's so much like information available totally to support
• 44:08
Speaker 2: the idea of taking breaks from your children makes you
• 44:12
  Speaker 2: a better parent.
• 44:12
Speaker 4: Yes, I also think the kids want a break from
• 44:15
Speaker 4: their parents. Like they love going and having yes said
• 44:17
Speaker 4: or comm or Grandma and grandpa or whoever it is.
• 44:20
Speaker 4: It's fun and different.
• 44:21
Speaker 2: It's also just it's just a good system and healthy
• 44:24
Speaker 2: like boundary to get into so that you're not seven
• 44:28
Speaker 2: or eight years old like you're going into like super Obviously,
• 44:31
Speaker 2: their family is a codependent family like that. You can't
• 44:34
Speaker 2: avoid being codependent with your family. That's just the way
• 44:36
Speaker 2: it works. But you want to teach these kids, you know,
• 44:39
Speaker 2: like some sort of independence and not have it go
• 44:42
Speaker 2: on to where they're fourteen or fifteen and they've never
• 44:44
  Speaker 2: had a sleepover. I had a friend who had a
• 44:45
Speaker 2: fifteen year old who had never slept over somebody else's house.
• 44:48
Speaker 4: Apparently, like sleepovers have kind of gone away.
• 44:51
Speaker 2: We wor about their kids, you know, getting molested, which
• 44:55
Speaker 2: is reasonable, but hopefully you couldn't. I mean, that is
• 44:58
Speaker 2: a reasonable fear, but it's not like it shouldn't be
• 45:01
  Speaker 2: your only thing.
• 45:02
Speaker 1: You know, do you're driving force? I mean you can.
• 45:05
Speaker 1: You can make have people that are going to be
• 45:08
Speaker 1: with your kids that you know and trust.
• 45:09
Speaker 4: Right, So does it a little get molested, Like get
• 45:13
Speaker 4: out there, get at some point.
• 45:18
Speaker 3: Our kids did sleepovers all the time, and at some
• 45:21
Speaker 3: point those kids are going to go to camp or whatever,
• 45:23
Speaker 3: like they have to get to campes.
• 45:27
Speaker 1: But this is a good first step.
• 45:28
Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, just tell them it's a fully endorsed
• 45:32
Speaker 2: plan by all parties you spoke to.
• 45:33
Speaker 4: Yes, Yes, leave your kids for a week or whatever,
• 45:36
Speaker 4: a few days, that's right, Well, Perry says, online dating
• 45:40
Speaker 4: broke me. Dear Chelsea, big fan of the show, even
• 45:43
Speaker 4: bigger fan of Doug. I need some advice on how
• 45:46
Speaker 4: to push myself out of the habits I've developed from
• 45:48
Speaker 4: online dating. I'm twenty eight and I've been living in
• 45:50
Speaker 4: Montreal for ten years. I've been technically single for about
• 45:53
Speaker 4: four and a half years, over compensating for several years
• 45:56
Speaker 4: of serial monogamy. I love my life and I'm very
• 45:59
Speaker 4: fulfilled with my friendship careers. So after a long hiatus
• 46:01
Speaker 4: of single girl style dating, a long term situationship, and
• 46:05
Speaker 4: admittedly a fear of commitment, I've decided I'm officially ready
• 46:08
Speaker 4: to start looking for something serious. Here's the issue. I've
• 46:12
Speaker 4: been online dating since I was sixteen, sorry mom and Dad,
• 46:15
Speaker 4: and it's seriously like you, and it seriously impacted my
• 46:20
Speaker 4: ability to initiate interactions with people who interest me in person.
• 46:23
Speaker 4: I'm quite extroverted and I'm generally pretty good at going
• 46:26
Speaker 4: after what I want. This definitely comes through when I'm swiping,
• 46:29
Speaker 4: and I never hesitate to ask someone to meet for
• 46:31
Speaker 4: drinks when a bit of interest has sparked. But if
• 46:34
Speaker 4: I meet someone out in the world, even if we're flirting,
• 46:36
Speaker 4: I have completely lost my nerve to take the next
• 46:38
Speaker 4: step of asking them for their number or to go
• 46:40
Speaker 4: on a date. I know this likely stems from a
• 46:42
Speaker 4: fear of rejection, which is a much bigger blow face
• 46:45
Speaker 4: to face than it is over the apps. Not to
• 46:47
Speaker 4: mention that everyone I talk to on the apps has
• 46:48
Speaker 4: already shown interest before we start talking. But I want
• 46:51
Speaker 4: to open this door for myself. As natural chemistry is everything.
• 46:54
Speaker 4: I'd love to be able to confidently ask people out
• 46:57
Speaker 4: when I meet them face to face. I love any
• 46:58
Speaker 4: advice you can give me. I've had a crush on
• 47:00
Speaker 4: a guy at my gym for months, and even though
• 47:02
Speaker 4: we're already chatting, I always get tongue tied before I
• 47:04
Speaker 4: can take the next step.
• 47:06
Speaker 2: Perry, Oh, this is so fun. This is so fun.
• 47:10
Speaker 2: There's nothing like creating a new habit. First of all, Hi,
• 47:13
  Speaker 2: how are you.
• 47:13
Speaker 1: Hi, Nice to meet you. Stunged to be here?
• 47:17
Speaker 2: Oh, well, we're happy you're here. This is our special guest,
• 47:20
Speaker 2: Adam Scott's here today.
• 47:21
Speaker 3: Hi, Hi, nice to meet you.
• 47:25
Speaker 1: How's it going that you didn't expect that? Yeah? Okay.
• 47:29
Speaker 2: First of all, this is the perfect way to start,
• 47:31
Speaker 2: is to go up to this guy in the gym
• 47:33
Speaker 2: and say exactly what you said to us. It's been
• 47:35
Speaker 2: a shorter way just to say, listen, I am trying
• 47:38
Speaker 2: to break my habit of only online dating and actually
• 47:41
Speaker 2: working on my skill set about initiating and so you
• 47:45
Speaker 2: can say yes, or you can say no, but I
• 47:47
Speaker 2: am just practicing right now.
• 47:49
Speaker 1: I've been noticing you for the last few months.
• 47:52
Speaker 2: Whatever however you want to phrase it, but use that
• 47:55
Speaker 2: guy as your first step in and use that storyline
• 47:59
Speaker 2: as you're intro or entree or entry I'm not sure
• 48:03
Speaker 2: which word I'm thinking of right now, but to get
• 48:06
Speaker 2: into this situation, because you can form a new habit
• 48:08
Speaker 2: into like you know, I people say twenty eight days.
• 48:11
Speaker 2: I think it's like fewer than that. I think you
• 48:13
Speaker 2: can really form new habits in six or seven times.
• 48:16
Speaker 2: Like I think, if you really do something and you
• 48:18
  Speaker 2: make yourself do.
• 48:19
Speaker 1: It, it's not that hard.
• 48:21
Speaker 2: You're just you've just been trained online, like you just
• 48:23
Speaker 2: kind of have to unlearn that behavior. But it's really
• 48:26
Speaker 2: also empowering, regardless of what the response is to go
• 48:31
Speaker 2: up to someone and say something like that, and it's
• 48:33
Speaker 2: going to become its own kind of intoxic, hating thing
• 48:36
Speaker 2: for you to do, don't you think, Adam, I'm you
• 48:39
Speaker 2: probably haven't experienced online dating ever because you've been.
• 48:41
  Speaker 1: With your wife.
• 48:42
Speaker 3: Isn't that crazy? But that's lucky? Well, most people, most
• 48:48
Speaker 3: marriages these days are it's people met online. Yeah, and
• 48:52
Speaker 3: apps and stuff. I mean I think if you went
• 48:54
Speaker 3: up to him and said what Chelsea just said, he
• 48:58
Speaker 3: would be so psyched. I mean, first of all, it
• 49:02
Speaker 3: would be so flattering, But secondly, it's so refreshing that
• 49:07
Speaker 3: someone would would say something and just be upfront like that,
• 49:11
Speaker 3: because everyone's hiding behind the apps.
• 49:14
Speaker 2: Yes, and keep that in mind, like you're not the
• 49:17
Speaker 2: only person that's experiencing these like this app like dating lifestyle.
• 49:21
Speaker 2: Everyone in your age and younger and older is also
• 49:26
Speaker 2: dealing with the same thing. So it's going to be
• 49:28
Speaker 2: refreshing for him too. And it really doesn't matter what
• 49:31
Speaker 2: anybody says. This is an exercise for you. So even
• 49:34
Speaker 2: if he says no, I doubt he will honestly, unless
• 49:37
Speaker 2: he's got a girlfriend or a wife or something, which
• 49:39
Speaker 2: you know, then fine.
• 49:41
Speaker 1: But even if he does say no, who gives a shit?
• 49:44
  Speaker 2: There's a you know what I mean, Like you're going
• 49:46
Speaker 2: to get used to the idea of like it's more
• 49:48
Speaker 2: about you empowering yourself and like making that move than
• 49:53
Speaker 2: about what is like the end game and the response
• 49:56
  Speaker 2: that you get.
• 49:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's all very good advice.
• 49:59
Speaker 6: I think I've just gotten into the habit of if
• 50:02
Speaker 6: I do take interest in someone in person kind of
• 50:05
Speaker 6: you know, laying the groundwork but waiting for them to
• 50:08
Speaker 6: ye like that final move.
• 50:10
Speaker 2: That's lame because I used to be like that too,
• 50:12
Speaker 2: But it's like, who we don't have time for that. Yeah,
• 50:15
Speaker 2: we're all it's here for a short period of time.
• 50:17
Speaker 2: Like you got to go after what you want. And
• 50:18
Speaker 2: here's something that I always do that might help you.
• 50:21
Speaker 2: I always just think on behalf of all women when
• 50:23
Speaker 2: I'm doing something like that. When I'm being like, you know,
• 50:26
Speaker 2: like doing something that kind of scares me, I'm like,
• 50:28
Speaker 2: I want all women to feel this way. I want
• 50:30
Speaker 2: to empower all women with the move that I'm making,
• 50:32
Speaker 2: So like, think of all women when you do this,
• 50:34
Speaker 2: Like you're not just helping yourself, you're kind of setting
• 50:36
Speaker 2: an example for anyone who might see you do it,
• 50:39
Speaker 2: even though I'm sure you don't want an audience, you know,
• 50:41
Speaker 2: like you just kind of think about it as like
• 50:44
Speaker 2: an energetic vibe that you're setting the tone for and
• 50:47
Speaker 2: that you're kind of helping other people like level up
• 50:51
Speaker 2: to the moment too, And you know, think about like
• 50:54
Speaker 2: going up to people. That's just a stronger move anyway
• 50:57
Speaker 2: than hiding behind a screen.
• 50:58
Speaker 3: I think that's such great advice, and going into it
• 51:02
Speaker 3: thinking if he says no or who gives a shit,
• 51:06
Speaker 3: that's not the point of it. The point of it
• 51:08
Speaker 3: is to just inject yourself into the world a little more,
• 51:12
Speaker 3: and whether this particular person has the reaction you want
• 51:16
Speaker 3: or not, it's not about that. It's about you know,
• 51:19
Speaker 3: the next one, will you know? It's about getting yourself
• 51:23
Speaker 3: out there, and like Chelsea said, kind of shifting your
• 51:25
Speaker 3: habits a little bit.
• 51:27
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I think once, you know, I if I
• 51:30
Speaker 6: get to the point where I reach two or three
• 51:32
Speaker 6: rejections and realize it's like really not as terrifying or
• 51:36
Speaker 6: as devastating as it sounds like it will be, I'll
• 51:40
Speaker 6: probably really settle into my comfort zone with it. But
• 51:44
Speaker 6: I think using that approach in general and just kind
• 51:46
Speaker 6: of being really upfront about wanting to get outside of
• 51:49
Speaker 6: the online dating space is a really good approach because
• 51:54
Speaker 6: I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling this way.
• 51:56
Speaker 1: Yeah, you're definitely not. And also, I want to just
• 51:58
Speaker 1: tell you a quick story. I had this what you're
• 52:01
  Speaker 1: talking about.
• 52:02
Speaker 2: Like me, I was shy, which is I'm sure hard
• 52:04
Speaker 2: for many people to believe.
• 52:06
Speaker 1: But I was at I was in Whistler.
• 52:08
Speaker 2: This was many years ago, and there was a group
• 52:10
Speaker 2: of guys sitting at a table and I was with
• 52:11
  Speaker 2: my friend's daughter.
• 52:12
Speaker 1: She was like sixteen years old at the time, and it.
• 52:14
Speaker 2: Was just me and her and there's a group of
• 52:16
Speaker 2: guys and there's one guy that I was like, Oh,
• 52:18
Speaker 2: this guy is cute. And then we got up from
• 52:20
Speaker 2: the table and we're leaving the restaurant and I said
• 52:22
Speaker 2: to the sixteen year old girl, I'm like, that guy
• 52:24
  Speaker 2: was cute.
• 52:24
Speaker 1: And she goes, let's go back, and I'm like, no,
• 52:26
Speaker 1: I'm not doing that. I'm like, they know who I am.
• 52:28
Speaker 1: I'm not going back to a group of men and
• 52:30
Speaker 1: saying you And she goes, I'll do it. And so
• 52:34
Speaker 1: she went back and she's like, oh, he's married, and
• 52:39
Speaker 1: and I was like, I can't believe a sixteen year old.
• 52:42
Speaker 2: Just did something that I should have been doing. You know,
• 52:45
Speaker 2: I was forty something at the time, and I was like,
• 52:47
Speaker 2: I just remember it.
• 52:48
  Speaker 1: In that moment.
• 52:49
Speaker 2: I was like, no, next time, I'm saying something that's great.
• 52:52
Speaker 4: So and remember, like the ask is not like, hey,
• 52:55
Speaker 4: do you want to fall in love and get married?
• 52:58
  Speaker 3: Yeah? Totally.
• 53:00
Speaker 6: The big fear isn't finding out that they're in relationships.
• 53:03
Speaker 1: I actually did find out.
• 53:04
Speaker 6: That this guy was single, and then it became scarier
• 53:06
Speaker 6: because I knew that a rejection like wouldn't be because
• 53:09
Speaker 6: he was married, because that doesn't scare me. I'm not
• 53:12
Speaker 6: afraid of, you know, like finding out, oh, you know,
• 53:15
Speaker 6: he's he's already committed, like that doesn't feel like a rejection,
• 53:18
Speaker 6: like being told no, I'm not interested in you. So
• 53:22
Speaker 6: that kind of as much as that seemed like it
• 53:26
Speaker 6: would be a step forward, kind of felt like a
• 53:27
  Speaker 6: step back.
• 53:28
Speaker 2: But here's another thing about rejection. I think you should
• 53:31
Speaker 2: look at rejection. You just have to flip the switch
• 53:33
Speaker 2: the way you're looking through things. Flip it upside down,
• 53:36
Speaker 2: like think about the opposite. Every rejection is closer to
• 53:39
Speaker 2: getting what you want, right.
• 53:41
  Speaker 1: That's true.
• 53:41
Speaker 2: Say you get rejected by five guys to meet the
• 53:43
Speaker 2: person that you're gonna marry, wouldn't you want to get
• 53:45
  Speaker 2: there faster?
• 53:47
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point. I mean, there are almost
• 53:49
Speaker 1: so many people in Montreal.
• 53:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot of people in Montreal. You're gonna
• 53:54
Speaker 2: be fine, You're beautiful, you have a great spirit.
• 53:56
  Speaker 1: It's all good.
• 53:57
Speaker 2: All good vibes, spread the good vibes and do it
• 54:00
  Speaker 2: and report back.
• 54:00
Speaker 1: Let us know what happens.
• 54:02
Speaker 3: I will. I will, absolutely, And you'll never know if
• 54:05
Speaker 3: you don't, if you don't ask, if you don't give it.
• 54:07
Speaker 1: Right, that is very true.
• 54:09
Speaker 6: And yeah, if only we're in a place where I
• 54:11
Speaker 6: could have, you know, a glass of wine before.
• 54:14
Speaker 2: But it would be funny to have a glass of
• 54:17
Speaker 2: wine and then go to the gym just for the
• 54:18
Speaker 2: purpose of a day.
• 54:21
Speaker 1: That's the thing I would say.
• 54:22
Speaker 6: Certain, that would really be uh be helpful for my deal.
• 54:28
Speaker 4: All right, Thank you, Harry.
• 54:30
Speaker 1: Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
• 54:32
  Speaker 3: Nice to read.
• 54:32
Speaker 1: Hey, bye, nice to meet you. Bye. That's Cuteutie, that
• 54:37
  Speaker 1: is cute.
• 54:41
  Speaker 3: Well.
• 54:42
Speaker 4: Our next caller is Genie and her subject line is
• 54:45
Speaker 4: I cut off my maga mom. Oops, question mark. Dear Chelsea.
• 54:50
Speaker 4: I've been at war with myself since January twenty ninth
• 54:53
Speaker 4: of this year. That was the day I blew up
• 54:55
Speaker 4: at my mother over the phone and called her a
• 54:56
Speaker 4: hypocrite and a fascist and said I never wanted to
• 54:59
Speaker 4: talk to her again. I'm fifty three and my mother
• 55:01
Speaker 4: is eighty five. She's rider die Maga and in complete
• 55:04
Speaker 4: denial of any facts provided by me or anyone else.
• 55:07
Speaker 4: She's so far in the cult she doesn't think he
• 55:10
Speaker 4: lies like at all. During his first term, she kept
• 55:13
Speaker 4: a framed picture of Trump and Milania in her living room.
• 55:17
Speaker 4: She's never done that with any other president. She's largely
• 55:20
Speaker 4: steered clear of initiating political conversations with me, but it's
• 55:23
Speaker 4: hard to avoid discussing Trump when she asks how I've been,
• 55:26
Speaker 4: because I'm so overwhelmed by all the terrible things he's doing.
• 55:29
Speaker 4: After the invasion of Minnesota and the killing of Renee
• 55:31
Speaker 4: Good and Alex Pretty, I was sure Mom's position on
• 55:34
Speaker 4: Trump would have changed in that final conversation. When I
• 55:36
Speaker 4: asked if she still supports him, she said yes, I'm
• 55:39
Speaker 4: not proud of this, but I lost my shit. I
• 55:41
Speaker 4: told her she would have supported her Jewish neighbors being
• 55:44
Speaker 4: hauled away if she had lived in Germany in the thirties.
• 55:47
Speaker 4: I told her she would have supported Japanese interment camps,
• 55:50
Speaker 4: both events we discussed at length when I was a child,
• 55:52
Speaker 4: with her stating how awful these were. Her values have shifted,
• 55:56
Speaker 4: and it's very hard to tolerate. In case you're thinking
• 55:58
Speaker 4: she's lost her Marbles, that's not the case. She's sharp
• 56:00
Speaker 4: as a tech. Now that a few months have passed,
• 56:02
Speaker 4: I think I've made a mistake. Yes, her position is
• 56:05
Speaker 4: hypocritical and immoral, but she's my eighty five year old
• 56:08
Speaker 4: mother who has maybe ten years left on this earth.
• 56:09
Speaker 4: As a mother, she's great, always loving, and supportive. She's
• 56:13
Speaker 4: been a doting grandmother to my two kids. The war
• 56:15
Speaker 4: with myself is should I apologize and resume our relationship
• 56:18
Speaker 4: or do I continue to refuse to normalize her repugnant views.
• 56:22
Speaker 4: Either option feels terrible, but I don't want to lose
• 56:24
Speaker 4: these final years with her. Chelsea, What would you do
• 56:27
  Speaker 4: in my position?
• 56:28
Speaker 1: Genie? Hi, Genie, Hi, Hi Jeanie. This is Adam Scott,
• 56:32
  Speaker 1: our special guest.
• 56:34
Speaker 5: Hi my gosh, Hiay.
• 56:37
Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I feel for you. You're not alone at all.
• 56:42
Speaker 2: I mean, we get people calling in about this stuff
• 56:44
Speaker 2: all the time. I think what I've come to realize
• 56:47
Speaker 2: in the recent weeks is that I think you should
• 56:50
Speaker 2: treat her even though she's got she's with it mentally.
• 56:55
Speaker 1: You have to treat like maga people like they have.
• 56:59
Speaker 2: Mental illness, Like you have to think of it like
• 57:02
  Speaker 2: a mental illness.
• 57:03
Speaker 1: They're part of a cult and they've been tricked. Clearly
• 57:06
  Speaker 1: they've been tricked.
• 57:07
Speaker 2: If she was teaching you about the Holocaust and Japanese
• 57:10
Speaker 2: and tournament camps, she's been tricked, just like all of
• 57:13
Speaker 2: these people have been tricked into thinking that this person
• 57:16
Speaker 2: cares about them. So, even though it's so hard to
• 57:19
Speaker 2: compartmentalize that, I think you should just really think of
• 57:23
Speaker 2: it like, oh, she's a victim of a scheme, you know,
• 57:27
Speaker 2: like she's chosen even though she has free will, Like
• 57:30
Speaker 2: I mean, she has chosen to be in this.
• 57:33
Speaker 1: Group of people. But you have to look at it
• 57:35
Speaker 1: like it's mental illness, and you can't. You just have to.
• 57:39
Speaker 2: Because if you want this relationship with your mother, which
• 57:42
Speaker 2: I completely understand, why wouldn't you, you know, I think you.
• 57:46
Speaker 1: Just have to go to her. I don't know that
• 57:47
  Speaker 1: you have to.
• 57:48
Speaker 2: Apologize, per se. I think you should go to her
• 57:51
Speaker 2: with like love and be like, listen.
• 57:54
  Speaker 1: You're really you're old, You're my mother. I need to
• 57:58
  Speaker 1: I want I mean, you're not, you're old.
• 57:59
Speaker 2: You're going to but you know, like I want us
• 58:01
Speaker 2: to spend time with each other.
• 58:03
  Speaker 1: You've been a wonderful mother. I know we don't agree
• 58:05
  Speaker 1: on this stuff.
• 58:06
Speaker 2: And I think it's the best thing we can do
• 58:08
Speaker 2: is just to not discuss it and really focus on
• 58:11
Speaker 2: just having a loving, caring relationship and not bring up politics.
• 58:14
Speaker 2: And I know that's really hard right now, but I
• 58:17
Speaker 2: think you can do it because it's your mom. You know,
• 58:20
Speaker 2: you could talk about your family, You could talk about
• 58:22
  Speaker 2: your kids.
• 58:22
Speaker 1: Do you have kids, Yes, I have two teenagers. Okay, great,
• 58:27
Speaker 1: so there's plenty to talk about, right.
• 58:29
Speaker 5: Yes, you know what now that you've framed it like that,
• 58:33
Speaker 5: like she's been tricked, like sometimes the elderly do get Yeah,
• 58:38
Speaker 5: if I can, if I can look at her that way,
• 58:42
Speaker 5: I think I can manage to be calm yeah, okay when.
• 58:47
Speaker 4: And just just not.
• 58:49
Speaker 5: Talk about it. I think that's our only course of action.
• 58:52
Speaker 3: I know how tricky it is though, because it's I
• 58:57
Speaker 3: think back to like George W. Bush Organ or George
• 59:00
Speaker 3: Bush Sr. And back to back then. I had friends
• 59:05
Speaker 3: that were Republicans back in those days, and it was
• 59:09
Speaker 3: so much simpler. It was a political. It was a
• 59:11
Speaker 3: disagreement on politics. And so when people now are like,
• 59:16
  Speaker 3: it's just it's it's just a disagreement. Why is it
• 59:20
Speaker 3: such a big deal. It is different though. It's a
• 59:23
Speaker 3: disagreement about fundamental truths and about reality. So I know
• 59:28
Speaker 3: how how this how hard this is for you, and
• 59:32
Speaker 3: I'm sure it is so difficult to separate it from
• 59:36
Speaker 3: because it's so ingrained in everything, because what all the
• 59:42
Speaker 3: MEGA followers have been duped into is so fundamental and
• 59:47
Speaker 3: is so wide reaching. But I think what Chelsea said
• 59:53
Speaker 3: is exactly right. It's just a matter of zeroing in
• 59:56
Speaker 3: on the things that you can talk about and just
• 59:59
Speaker 3: focus sing in on that. And it is true. She
• 1:00:02
Speaker 3: has been tricked and a lot of older folks have
• 1:00:07
Speaker 3: been a lot of older folks who are a MEGA
• 1:00:09
Speaker 3: have been kind of pulled into this thing and taken
• 1:00:13
  Speaker 3: advantage of.
• 1:00:14
Speaker 5: So you don't think I'll be compromising my values.
• 1:00:17
Speaker 1: No, okay, your mother.
• 1:00:19
Speaker 2: It's your mom, and she's older and she's not going
• 1:00:22
Speaker 2: to be around for a while.
• 1:00:23
  Speaker 1: I don't think you're compromising your values.
• 1:00:24
Speaker 2: I really respect that you're asking that, because I feel
• 1:00:27
Speaker 2: like I think about that stuff a lot too. It's like, oh, no,
• 1:00:30
  Speaker 2: it's your mother. It's not like a guy you're dating.
• 1:00:32
Speaker 2: And you know what I mean, It's not like that.
• 1:00:35
Speaker 2: This is you don't have a choice who your parents are,
• 1:00:37
Speaker 2: and this happened to your mother. This happened to your mother.
• 1:00:41
Speaker 2: That's how you have to think about it. Like this,
• 1:00:43
Speaker 2: you know, this mental illness happened to her, So if
• 1:00:47
Speaker 2: she were mentally ill, how would you react to that?
• 1:00:50
Speaker 1: You wouldn't cut off ties with her.
• 1:00:52
Speaker 2: You would be really supportive in every way you could be.
• 1:00:55
Speaker 2: You don't have to be supportive of her politics, but
• 1:00:57
Speaker 2: just be supportive of her as an individual and the
• 1:01:00
Speaker 2: love and caring, and don't wait for her to get it,
• 1:01:03
Speaker 2: because she's probably not gonna get it. There's not going
• 1:01:05
Speaker 2: to be anything that's gonna happen that's going to change
• 1:01:08
Speaker 2: her mind. Even when he goes down, she's still probably
• 1:01:12
Speaker 2: gonna feel the same way. So don't, like let go
• 1:01:15
Speaker 2: of that if you can, and work on letting go
• 1:01:17
Speaker 2: of that, Like that's a good kind of mantra for
• 1:01:19
Speaker 2: you to like say, let go of that, don't hold
• 1:01:22
Speaker 2: on to this hope. I have those feelings all.
• 1:01:25
Speaker 1: The time about like these people.
• 1:01:27
Speaker 2: What are these people going to do when when the
• 1:01:29
Speaker 2: emperor has no clothes, obviously he has no clothes. We're
• 1:01:31
Speaker 2: watching it happen in real time. It's they're never gonna
• 1:01:35
Speaker 2: get it. They're never gonna say we were wrong. I mean,
• 1:01:37
Speaker 2: some people will, but most people are.
• 1:01:38
Speaker 1: Not going to say it, you know what I mean.
• 1:01:40
  Speaker 2: Yeah, I get I get that you're principled, and I
• 1:01:42
Speaker 2: get that it's making you sick. It makes anyone who
• 1:01:45
Speaker 2: doesn't feel that way sick. You know, we're all dealing
• 1:01:47
Speaker 2: with this in our lives. But just focus on her
• 1:01:49
Speaker 2: being your mother and just think of her as as
• 1:01:52
  Speaker 2: really sick.
• 1:01:53
Speaker 5: So be cause initially my impulse was to write, you know,
• 1:01:57
Speaker 5: a very educational letter and cite sources and give her
• 1:02:02
Speaker 5: the information about how these migrants are being treated, and
• 1:02:06
Speaker 5: just provide lots of evidence that maybe I could change
• 1:02:09
Speaker 5: her mind. But I think what you're saying is it's
• 1:02:11
Speaker 5: it's not worth it. There's nothing I can or anyone
• 1:02:13
Speaker 5: can say at this point.
• 1:02:14
Speaker 4: No, what Trump has tapped into is like a different
• 1:02:17
Speaker 4: part of the brain than logic and reasoning. It's exactly,
• 1:02:21
  Speaker 4: it's something totally.
• 1:02:22
Speaker 1: Like you're amigdala, it's your fear of component. That's it.
• 1:02:26
Speaker 2: Everyone's like working off a fear. But just divorce yourself
• 1:02:30
Speaker 2: from the idea that she's going to ever get it.
• 1:02:31
Speaker 2: Don't waste your time. It's your time is probably better
• 1:02:35
Speaker 2: spent doing other things, like showing up for the people
• 1:02:38
Speaker 2: in your life that do feel the same way you do,
• 1:02:40
Speaker 2: and like doubling down on love and kindness for strangers
• 1:02:44
Speaker 2: and the people who are being affected by these terrible policies.
• 1:02:47
Speaker 2: That's what I try to focus on when I get
• 1:02:49
Speaker 2: really angry, is like, okay, flip that anger into positivity.
• 1:02:53
Speaker 2: So I think, you know, I think you're gonna be
• 1:02:56
Speaker 2: good and you're gonna be happier if you just make
• 1:02:58
Speaker 2: nice with her and make peace with her.
• 1:03:02
Speaker 5: Because it sounds think, just pick up the phone say hey, mom,
• 1:03:07
Speaker 5: I regret losing my temper. I've been thinking about this
• 1:03:11
Speaker 5: for several months, and I do think i'd make I
• 1:03:15
Speaker 5: made a mistake, and I would like to just moving forward,
• 1:03:17
Speaker 5: not talk about politics. Let's just focus on a family
• 1:03:20
Speaker 5: and resume my relationship to the link to that effects.
• 1:03:22
Speaker 3: I don't even know if you need to say that
• 1:03:23
Speaker 3: you made a mistake. I think you just say I
• 1:03:26
Speaker 3: love you and I miss you. Yes, and can we
• 1:03:29
  Speaker 3: just relationship?
• 1:03:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, be sweet and be funny if you can be
• 1:03:35
Speaker 2: like I love you, I missed you, and like you know,
• 1:03:38
Speaker 2: I don't know what your relationship is like, but be
• 1:03:41
Speaker 2: cute and short. I don't think you even get into
• 1:03:43
Speaker 2: the political stuff right now. If it comes up again,
• 1:03:46
Speaker 2: just say hey, you know what, we don't agree on this,
• 1:03:48
Speaker 2: and like I'm really focused on I just want to
• 1:03:51
Speaker 2: spend as much quality time with you as possible. So
• 1:03:54
Speaker 2: let's talk about the kids or what's going on with
• 1:03:56
Speaker 2: you in your life. You know that's not political. When
• 1:04:00
Speaker 2: the situation presents itself, then you can say something, but
• 1:04:04
Speaker 2: not prematurely. I don't want you to reactivate that. I
• 1:04:08
Speaker 2: think you just go in with love and that that's
• 1:04:09
  Speaker 2: hard to deny.
• 1:04:10
  Speaker 3: I think that's smart.
• 1:04:11
Speaker 5: Okay, this helps so much. You don't even know how
• 1:04:14
Speaker 5: much sleep I've been losing.
• 1:04:17
  Speaker 3: It's horrible.
• 1:04:17
Speaker 5: So I really appreciate you, you know, Chelsea, You're so wise,
• 1:04:21
Speaker 5: and I just thank you. And Adam. Oh my gosh,
• 1:04:24
Speaker 5: I can't believe I'm talking to you anyway, but thank
• 1:04:26
Speaker 5: you so much. And I'll let you get to your
• 1:04:28
  Speaker 5: next color.
• 1:04:29
Speaker 4: Thank you, Thank you gie.
• 1:04:31
Speaker 1: Okay, Okay, I will bye bye. Thank you. Oh. We
• 1:04:36
  Speaker 1: really helped her.
• 1:04:37
Speaker 3: You know. I feel like it all comes down to
• 1:04:40
Speaker 3: I think the number one hat trick of Trump's is that,
• 1:04:44
Speaker 3: And it's fundamental that he turns the truth into a
• 1:04:48
Speaker 3: political position. He's convinced everyone that the truth is a
• 1:04:55
Speaker 3: far left radical political position. So when resented, like if
• 1:05:01
Speaker 3: she wrote up a bunch of evidence like she yes
• 1:05:04
Speaker 3: said you, it's just going to be seen as propaganda and.
• 1:05:08
Speaker 1: Exactly, you know, right right.
• 1:05:11
Speaker 2: But it's nice when when people are really not when
• 1:05:14
Speaker 2: they're tormented, but when you can really actually help them,
• 1:05:17
Speaker 2: you know, like come to it, because all you really
• 1:05:19
Speaker 2: need is an outside perspective. I believe with any situation,
• 1:05:23
Speaker 2: you need someone who's not involved in your life to
• 1:05:25
Speaker 2: kind of give you some fool black.
• 1:05:26
Speaker 1: Because no one else, you know, no one's going to
• 1:05:28
Speaker 1: steer you wrong unless you're completely a malevolent person trying
• 1:05:33
Speaker 1: to trying to ruin people's lives.
• 1:05:36
Speaker 2: Okay, Adam, I love talking to you. I'm so glad
• 1:05:39
Speaker 2: you're here. I mean, oh, I got your DM. You
• 1:05:42
Speaker 2: asked me that you were like, I sent you a video.
• 1:05:45
Speaker 3: Yeah it didn't play.
• 1:05:46
  Speaker 2: I couldn't even though I sent you a video, So
• 1:05:48
Speaker 2: that was news to me.
• 1:05:50
Speaker 1: It was probably telling you how great you were in
• 1:05:52
Speaker 1: severance or something. I do a lot of video messaging
• 1:05:54
Speaker 1: because I feel like, I like to bring that back.
• 1:05:57
Speaker 2: I feel like we've lost the art of that. But
• 1:05:59
Speaker 2: you guys can see Adam right here on Netflix. You
• 1:06:02
Speaker 2: can watch The Whisperman with de Niro and another one
• 1:06:04
Speaker 2: of my favorites, Michelle Montan. She is in it as well,
• 1:06:07
Speaker 2: and Adham plays de Niro's son in this.
• 1:06:09
Speaker 3: Movie, and Michael Keaton's in it.
• 1:06:11
Speaker 1: Michael Keaton. Oh, I don't want to give that away.
• 1:06:13
Speaker 1: I thought that was a giveaway.
• 1:06:14
Speaker 3: Is that a secret?
• 1:06:15
Speaker 1: Well, well, Michael Keaton's in the movie too. Okay, there
• 1:06:21
  Speaker 1: you go.
• 1:06:21
Speaker 3: I'm just so glad, Chelsea, because we've run into each
• 1:06:24
Speaker 3: other a bunch over the years, and you're always so
• 1:06:27
Speaker 3: kind and so cool and funny, and I'm a fan
• 1:06:31
Speaker 3: of your yours regardless. So I'm glad we finally got
• 1:06:36
Speaker 3: to like sit down and chat. It was really great.
• 1:06:39
Speaker 1: Likewise, I feel the same way about you. Thank you. Thanks,
• 1:06:42
  Speaker 1: Thanks Adam.
