- 0:02Speaker 1: This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me,
- 0:09Speaker 1: covering one piece the live action series from Netflix Season two,
- 0:16Speaker 1: Episode two, Good whil Hunting. Oh, these little joke stars
- 0:29Speaker 1: in this episode Lampoon makes me so sad still, guys,
- 0:36Speaker 1: But on the other hand, we're getting a sneak peek
- 0:41Speaker 1: at Brook and I'm pretty stoked. Welcome to spoil Me.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you
- 1:08Speaker 1: to Florian and Bernadette for commissioning these episodes. Florian's in
- 1:14Speaker 1: the chat. I haven't seen Bernadette. Oh, Floren says, got
- 1:18Speaker 1: a job offered today. Congratulations Florian. Good you can keep
- 1:21Speaker 1: commissioning things for me. Saraphim says, yeah. Every episode name
- 1:29Speaker 1: this season is a movie. Pun is the beginning and
- 1:33Speaker 1: the end the movie pun? Or is it like every
- 1:37Speaker 1: episode other than the first one? It may be I'm
- 1:41Speaker 1: not real good with movies. This is some something that
- 1:46Speaker 1: I have realized considering my line of work. A lot
- 1:50Speaker 1: more people think that I will be more on top
- 1:54Speaker 1: of than I am, and I frequently wind up disappointing them.
- 1:59Speaker 1: But you know, we all have our things, don't we.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So what can you do? Austin says, I think it's
- 2:08Speaker 1: every but the first okay. Cool. So this was like
- 2:15Speaker 1: the first half of this movie with our friends going
- 2:19Speaker 1: up and down the mountain was everything that I wanted.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I was very, very pleased with this. The whole vibe
- 2:27Speaker 1: of it is so I am positive this entire thing
- 2:34Speaker 1: is inside a studio, but it doesn't feel like that,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and that's the most important thing. There are just so
- 2:43Speaker 1: many different shows that I cover where the feeling that
- 2:47Speaker 1: we're in a studio is inescapable in a way that
- 2:52Speaker 1: to me feels almost lazy, like there were plenty of
- 2:56Speaker 1: ways you could have made this feel less like we're
- 2:59Speaker 1: literally standing on a sound stage with you, and I
- 3:04Speaker 1: don't know, it just looks great to me. Florian says,
- 3:09Speaker 1: they filmed it outside. The ship is too big for
- 3:11Speaker 1: a studio, and they really tilted the ship. Oh amazing,
- 3:17Speaker 1: Like I assumed this was a studio because for the
- 3:22Speaker 1: most part you don't really see the whole ship. There's
- 3:27Speaker 1: a lot of close ups, and then the whole ship
- 3:29Speaker 1: when we pull out. A lot of it seems to
- 3:31Speaker 1: be cgi to me, which is totally fine. So it
- 3:35Speaker 1: never occurred to me that they actually went ahead. And
- 3:38Speaker 1: that's amazing. I was about to take some shots at
- 3:43Speaker 1: Doctor Who, because they are particularly guilty of things feeling
- 3:47Speaker 1: like you're in a studio, and I will I'll still
- 3:49Speaker 1: take the shots, but this is amazing that it's a
- 3:54Speaker 1: like this is giving Titanic vibes. There's just something so
- 4:01Speaker 1: visceral about the whole thing, the feelings of the water
- 4:06Speaker 1: and the there's a sensation to it where it's like,
- 4:10Speaker 1: as I'm watching it, I can feel the spray in
- 4:16Speaker 1: the air, I can smell the water. It just feels
- 4:20Speaker 1: very real and it really was engaging. And also I
- 4:25Speaker 1: will point out my husband said, why don't they have
- 4:29Speaker 1: a one piece, like, you know, amusement park, And I
- 4:35Speaker 1: was like, I've been saying, and apparently they did for
- 4:38Speaker 1: a second, and this would be such a fucking awesome ride.
- 4:43Speaker 1: You could do so much with this. Honestly, there's a
- 4:46Speaker 1: part of me that's sort of thinking if they continue
- 4:48Speaker 1: with this like TV show, is it possible that Netflix
- 4:51Speaker 1: does an amusement park or gets like a piece of
- 4:56Speaker 1: an amusement park the way that Harry Potter got with Universe.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I don't know about what all Umbrella companies own Netflix
- 5:05Speaker 1: or who they're associated with or what you know, who
- 5:09Speaker 1: it would be that they'd have to make deals with
- 5:11Speaker 1: to make something like that happen. But I, for one
- 5:14Speaker 1: would be, as you all know, very down for it.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And I also think that they should hire me as
- 5:21Speaker 1: an ideas guy. I'll be a consultant with my millions
- 5:27Speaker 1: of followers. I think that I've got some real sway
- 5:33Speaker 1: in the one piece fandom and they probably shouldn't discount
- 5:38Speaker 1: my influence. So that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
- 5:44Speaker 1: So yeah, it's a series of really really great little
- 5:49Speaker 1: moments with everybody, like getting thrown around and Nami going
- 5:54Speaker 1: up to the front of the ship with Lufy and
- 5:56Speaker 1: having to dodge out of the way of a fucking
- 5:58Speaker 1: crate that looks like it would have broken her legs,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and then getting up to the front. The only thing
- 6:05Speaker 1: that I will say that I took a second and
- 6:07Speaker 1: was like, nobody's gonna nobody's gonna react to this adequately
- 6:11Speaker 1: is when she gets to the front and she's with
- 6:14Speaker 1: Loofy and they're saying, we did it. Now, all we've
- 6:18Speaker 1: got to do is go down and they reach the
- 6:21Speaker 1: edge of the waterfall looking fucking thing, and neither she
- 6:27Speaker 1: nor Loofy looks worried at the fact that there is
- 6:31Speaker 1: no discernible view of the water beyond that edge, like
- 6:37Speaker 1: it's a fucking ninety degree fall almost. You know, you
- 6:44Speaker 1: need to look more worried. Both of you need to
- 6:46Speaker 1: look more worried. They're both smiling too much, and I'm
- 6:49Speaker 1: so sorry, but no, absolutely fucking not. And the boys
- 6:55Speaker 1: at the back are hanging on, but they're still also
- 6:57Speaker 1: kind of smiling. And like the way that I would
- 7:00Speaker 1: have roped myself to the railing holding on what so
- 7:05Speaker 1: the moment that I lose hold, I just go flying
- 7:08Speaker 1: into the water for my bones to break against the rocks.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Can we get safety and protocols? Please, everybody get a
- 7:18Speaker 1: hold of yourselves. So as we're plummeting downward, we see
- 7:26Speaker 1: something at the base And it's very fun watching this
- 7:28Speaker 1: with my husband because he doesn't know a lot of
- 7:30Speaker 1: what's coming, and so he sees this and here's this
- 7:33Speaker 1: roaring sound and he's like what And then he just
- 7:35Speaker 1: sees Loofy yell, hey, whale, get out of the way,
- 7:40Speaker 1: and he started cracking up. And I'm watching this like, oh,
- 7:49Speaker 1: it's laboon. We're gonna have to watch poor Loofy beat
- 7:52Speaker 1: the hell out of this whale, and that's not the
- 7:55Speaker 1: way it goes. They handle this very differently than they
- 7:59Speaker 1: do in the anime. I think all to the good,
- 8:03Speaker 1: and I should mention that when the water like splashes up,
- 8:06Speaker 1: we get the one piece logo and I see the violin,
- 8:12Speaker 1: and I had a moment of like, way, way, And
- 8:19Speaker 1: later there's another moment where I thought, like, hold on way,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and I kind of think that they were fucking with me.
- 8:26Speaker 1: A little bit later on, I'll mention when but we
- 8:31Speaker 1: do get a sneak peek and guys, I don't know
- 8:36Speaker 1: if this is something that was surprising for anybody else
- 8:39Speaker 1: or if this has been in the material and I
- 8:41Speaker 1: haven't seen it, But like other than a couple of
- 8:45Speaker 1: like very specific trailers, I've tried not to engage with
- 8:50Speaker 1: anything that is sneak peaky for the show if I
- 8:54Speaker 1: can help it, just because I don't want to spoil
- 8:57Speaker 1: myself on the jokes or the vibes on certain things.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I'll watch the general trailer and like, I don't mind
- 9:04Speaker 1: finding out about casting things like that, but I will
- 9:10Speaker 1: say that, like the the fact that Brooke is appearing
- 9:17Speaker 1: this season, that at least the alive version of Brooke
- 9:22Speaker 1: is appearing was a big surprise because the focus has
- 9:25Speaker 1: been mostly on the fact that we're getting Chopper this season,
- 9:29Speaker 1: and so I feel like that really overshadowed anything else
- 9:34Speaker 1: that I saw. And let's see. Florian said the casting
- 9:40Speaker 1: was known, but we had not seen footage of it
- 9:43Speaker 1: till it came out. Sarah Him says, nope, they kept
- 9:46Speaker 1: Brooke a complete surprise, okay. Nehah says I went to
- 9:51Speaker 1: the one day of theaters showing they did of this
- 9:54Speaker 1: and the theater went wild when Brooke showed up. Nehua,
- 9:57Speaker 1: I am so sorry, but you are going to have
- 9:59Speaker 1: to blame to me. What the hell you're talking about
- 10:02Speaker 1: the theater? Did they do the whole entire one piece
- 10:07Speaker 1: season at the movie theater? What? Oh my god? That
- 10:14Speaker 1: must have been so fun. I am so mad that
- 10:19Speaker 1: I didn't know this was a thing, or I would
- 10:21Speaker 1: have like found a way. Ah. Austin says, I think
- 10:27Speaker 1: it was the first three. Saraphim says, yep, they had
- 10:29Speaker 1: a special limit release for select EPs and theaters. Now
- 10:32Speaker 1: who has said they did the first two episodes the
- 10:34Speaker 1: day of release? Oh, I am jealous. You guys next season,
- 10:40Speaker 1: if they do this again, We've got to arrange something
- 10:44Speaker 1: because I want to do that. I can't imagine watching
- 10:47Speaker 1: this with a crowd. I bet that was a blast.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And I'm like sitting there as I'm watching it with
- 10:54Speaker 1: my husband and like, I see the violin and I
- 10:56Speaker 1: just I went hold on a second and he's like what.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I'm like nothing. I think it's nothing. I'm pretty sure
- 11:05Speaker 1: it's nothing. And then later on there's a moment where
- 11:07Speaker 1: I'm like hold on, hold on, and I'm saying it
- 11:11Speaker 1: out loud and he's like what and I'm like nothing, nothing,
- 11:14Speaker 1: nothing or maybe. And then eventually when we do see him,
- 11:22Speaker 1: I was just like, oh my god, oh my god.
- 11:26Speaker 1: And he's just like what, and I'm like, babe, it's Broke.
- 11:28Speaker 1: It's Broke, It's Birket's brig, it's Spirk, it's Brooke, And uh,
- 11:31Speaker 1: you know, we don't get a lot of in this episode.
- 11:33Speaker 1: It's a very it's it's a very little bit, but
- 11:36Speaker 1: it was extremely exciting for those who are are only
- 11:41Speaker 1: joining for the live actions. Brooke is one of my
- 11:44Speaker 1: personal phaves and the only difficulty that I have with
- 11:49Speaker 1: him is that I don't know if I'm going to
- 11:54Speaker 1: like the character as much when it's not the same
- 11:56Speaker 1: voice actor, because the voice actor, like, I feel like
- 11:59Speaker 1: part of what I like so much about Brook is
- 12:01Speaker 1: sheerly the delivery of the voice actor in the dub.
- 12:04Speaker 1: He's just so good, And I'm wondering, am I still
- 12:09Speaker 1: gonna like Brook as much with somebody else? Like I
- 12:13Speaker 1: truly don't know if these lines would land the same way.
- 12:18Speaker 1: So I'll be curious to see. Austin says, you are
- 12:23Speaker 1: bad at this spoiler free stuff? What spoiler free stuff?
- 12:30Speaker 1: What's supposed to be spoiler free? I don't know if
- 12:34Speaker 1: you're referring to me or if you Oh, I meant you.
- 12:37Speaker 1: And Marshall, Oh no, he's he doesn't really, he kind
- 12:41Speaker 1: of wants the spoilers, I think a little bit. I
- 12:43Speaker 1: think he likes the fact that I like one piece
- 12:46Speaker 1: because it's something so outside of what he expected me
- 12:49Speaker 1: to like that it. I think he finds it sort
- 12:52Speaker 1: of fascinating, you know, when I'm like invested. And now
- 12:56Speaker 1: we did also talk about Loofy's dad, because we were
- 13:00Speaker 1: talking about that and he was just like, I don't
- 13:03Speaker 1: get it. It's like this, but the timing doesn't line up,
- 13:06Speaker 1: and I was like, do you want to know? Do
- 13:09Speaker 1: you want to know? And he was like, yeah, I
- 13:11Speaker 1: don't care, So I just told him, but uh, it
- 13:14Speaker 1: was it's yeah, he doesn't seem to be as worried
- 13:17Speaker 1: about it. So it's still fun too, because there are
- 13:20Speaker 1: things that like I could maybe spoil for him, and
- 13:22Speaker 1: they still might do differently. We'll see about some of it,
- 13:25Speaker 1: you know, but uh yeah, So what happens here is
- 13:29Speaker 1: like they go down into Laboon's mouth, Loofy has like
- 13:33Speaker 1: taken himself away off to the whale's face for a second,
- 13:39Speaker 1: and then he wakes up and the sun is shining,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and I'm sort of like, hold on, what's going on
- 13:44Speaker 1: because in the anime, when our friends wind up inside Laboon,
- 13:51Speaker 1: there is still like sky, you know, the inside of
- 13:55Speaker 1: Laboon is still like the outside. And for a second,
- 13:59Speaker 1: I was sort of like when we see the sky
- 14:02Speaker 1: and the flower, I thought maybe they were setting it
- 14:05Speaker 1: up to be like, oh, you think we're outside, don't you,
- 14:07Speaker 1: But no, we're inside of a whale. Isn't this surprising?
- 14:13Speaker 1: And they just completely did away with all of that,
- 14:17Speaker 1: and the inside of Laboon is just like the inside
- 14:20Speaker 1: of a fucking whale. And it is dark and it
- 14:22Speaker 1: is gross, and that's fine. This is actually the sort
- 14:28Speaker 1: of thing that, like, every now and then, for the
- 14:31Speaker 1: most part, I am able to roll with a lot
- 14:35Speaker 1: of the fantastical aspects of one piece, no problem. And
- 14:38Speaker 1: then every now and then there's something that I just
- 14:40Speaker 1: kind of bump up against and and I just go, Nope,
- 14:45Speaker 1: it's just not working for me, Like, I'll accept it,
- 14:48Speaker 1: but I don't really like it. And that was something
- 14:51Speaker 1: that I just kept being like, I don't even understand
- 14:54Speaker 1: how this is supposed to work, you know, And I
- 14:57Speaker 1: feel like changing this for the live action only makes sense,
- 15:00Speaker 1: and it's a good call because otherwise, how do you
- 15:04Speaker 1: make that make sense? You know, it doesn't. It doesn't
- 15:06Speaker 1: make any sense. So what we have here is actually
- 15:10Speaker 1: that that Crocus is living outside on the cliffs near
- 15:17Speaker 1: where Laboon bashes his face over and over again. And
- 15:24Speaker 1: it's really it's so sad. Guys, they made sure not
- 15:29Speaker 1: to do Loofy beats the shit out of a whale.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I'll mention that as well. I think we can all
- 15:34Speaker 1: appreciate that this is a thing that the show has
- 15:37Speaker 1: largely veered away from. Is that in the original anime,
- 15:42Speaker 1: there are often animals that are being mistreated and used
- 15:46Speaker 1: as weapons or you know that wind up like being
- 15:50Speaker 1: on the receiving end of some pretty brutal treatment, and
- 15:54Speaker 1: it seems that the live action has decided to do
- 15:58Speaker 1: away with that a lot of the time, which I
- 16:00Speaker 1: feel like is just only logical. People are going to
- 16:04Speaker 1: be up in arms about stuff. You don't need that,
- 16:08Speaker 1: And you know, this whole thing with Laboon, we find
- 16:13Speaker 1: out this story early. This is not something that we
- 16:18Speaker 1: the whole thing with exactly who is there, and all
- 16:22Speaker 1: of that doesn't come out until later. We hear about
- 16:25Speaker 1: the pirates and their relationship with Laboon and all of
- 16:29Speaker 1: that from Crocus, but we don't have the the fact
- 16:36Speaker 1: that Brooke is involved until way way later. And here
- 16:41Speaker 1: we're just folding everything in and having it all happen,
- 16:44Speaker 1: which I think makes plenty of sense and is totally
- 16:48Speaker 1: acceptable to me. And Loofy can't fight Laboon because he is,
- 16:55Speaker 1: you know, too far away and also in water, and
- 16:58Speaker 1: Lufy is like trying to freak out. He's doing a
- 17:01Speaker 1: very good job of like being angry and kind of hopeless,
- 17:08Speaker 1: feeling like it's calling Mufy hopeless ever just feels like
- 17:12Speaker 1: a lie, like he's never actually hopeless, but this is
- 17:16Speaker 1: a time where he's like really on the verge because
- 17:19Speaker 1: he just doesn't know what to do next. And then
- 17:23Speaker 1: we see Crocus and he has got the friggin' h it. Basically,
- 17:29Speaker 1: it's like a missile launcher but for syringes of a
- 17:36Speaker 1: sedative that will cause the boon to sleep and calm down,
- 17:44Speaker 1: because otherwise he is bashing his head into the wall
- 17:49Speaker 1: here repeatedly in the anime. I correct me if I'm wrong, guys,
- 17:58Speaker 1: but those scars on his head are from fighting the
- 18:02Speaker 1: ships that come in, right? Is it partially him bashing
- 18:07Speaker 1: his head in? Also? I feel like there's more fighting
- 18:11Speaker 1: with him. That's part of this whole thing. Saraphim says,
- 18:18Speaker 1: the series makes such good use of having decades more
- 18:21Speaker 1: story to use for foreshadowing and set up. Yet I
- 18:23Speaker 1: totally agree. Austin says, you recognize Crocus. It's the blackfish.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Oh that's what it is, Austin, he looked so familiar,
- 18:34Speaker 1: but without a beard. I kept being like, no, I
- 18:38Speaker 1: don't recognize him. I was like going I was going
- 18:40Speaker 1: back and forth a lot between being like, do I
- 18:42Speaker 1: know him. No, I don't know him. That's what it is, okay,
- 18:47Speaker 1: God wild? Uh, Saraphim says, no, bashing his head is
- 18:50Speaker 1: that it? Okay? This just this story is too sad, y'all.
- 18:56Speaker 1: It made me so and Marshall was genuinely just like,
- 19:00Speaker 1: I hate this sad wall look at him like he
- 19:04Speaker 1: was not. He's as much a sucker for a sad
- 19:07Speaker 1: animal as I am, and that is why we now
- 19:10Speaker 1: have Arwin on our hands. But uh, yeah, it's the
- 19:20Speaker 1: fact that he's left by his friends because they care
- 19:25Speaker 1: about him. That's the part that's really hard, is that
- 19:29Speaker 1: he feels like he's been abandoned and he wants to
- 19:32Speaker 1: see them, but we know that they did this because
- 19:37Speaker 1: they were so worried about him being okay, And like, honestly,
- 19:42Speaker 1: it's wild when you watch the scenes with Crocus what's
- 19:45Speaker 1: the name of the captain of the pirates that he
- 19:49Speaker 1: winds up chatting with, who's very cute by the way,
- 19:53Speaker 1: but he's extremely just like, wow, you really are taking
- 19:58Speaker 1: this adorable thing that has like no experience with you
- 20:02Speaker 1: into the grand line where he's just gonna be cut
- 20:04Speaker 1: up into sushi practically immediately. Glad that's not on my conscience.
- 20:09Speaker 1: And then is all fucking surprise Pikachu face when he's
- 20:12Speaker 1: asked to like look after this whale, and I was
- 20:15Speaker 1: just like, dude, you set yourself up for this. I
- 20:18Speaker 1: don't know what to tell you, but yeah, this is
- 20:22Speaker 1: extremely unsurprising at this point. Now, so we cut into
- 20:28Speaker 1: the whale and we get the flare that they send
- 20:33Speaker 1: up that remains like lit long enough for us to
- 20:37Speaker 1: get a pretty cool look at the inside of the whale.
- 20:41Speaker 1: And at one point, Nani says something because like Zora's
- 20:46Speaker 1: talking about fighting the whale and says, I'm gonna punch
- 20:49Speaker 1: that part that's like hanging down and she says the
- 20:52Speaker 1: uvula and he says, so it's a girl whale. And yeah,
- 20:57Speaker 1: my husband, that was probably probably the hardest he laughed
- 21:01Speaker 1: through the episode. That one really got him. I think
- 21:03Speaker 1: it's the seriousness with which Soro says it, you know.
- 21:08Speaker 1: And what we get here is the introduction of mister
- 21:15Speaker 1: nine and you know who. Now, everybody calm down, Okay,
- 21:31Speaker 1: here's the thing for those who don't watch the episodes
- 21:37Speaker 1: where I cover the anime I hated Vivi, and that
- 21:44Speaker 1: is purely in the way that she was done dirty.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I believe Bioda himself that's his fault. If he wanted
- 21:55Speaker 1: her to be a badass, she should have been one
- 21:58Speaker 1: instead of what he did. Everybody likes to cite all
- 22:02Speaker 1: of these things about her that make her badass, and
- 22:05Speaker 1: on paper, yes, if you looked at her resume, yes sure,
- 22:10Speaker 1: but then you meet her and it's just tons of
- 22:15Speaker 1: crying and oh, I forgot to tell you about the
- 22:18Speaker 1: killer things that live right here that we're about to
- 22:21Speaker 1: walk into seven times in a row for two weeks.
- 22:25Speaker 1: And I am fully prepared to give this Viv a chance.
- 22:32Speaker 1: I do not believe that Viv should suck as bad
- 22:36Speaker 1: as she did in the anime. I think that is
- 22:39Speaker 1: just he fumbled it bad somehow. And maybe in the
- 22:43Speaker 1: manga she's cooler than she is in the anime. I
- 22:46Speaker 1: don't think so based on what y'all have said. But
- 22:51Speaker 1: so far, just we don't get much of her in
- 22:54Speaker 1: this episode, but so far I like her vibe. You know,
- 23:01Speaker 1: she's kind of got tough and quiet going on for
- 23:06Speaker 1: right now. And the actress playing her was in Bridgerton
- 23:12Speaker 1: and is like another one of the most beautiful people
- 23:16Speaker 1: that you've ever seen in your life. This show. They
- 23:18Speaker 1: really know how to cast them. So I just want
- 23:24Speaker 1: everybody who is familiar with my personal dislike a Vivia
- 23:29Speaker 1: as a character. She's in my top five most hated
- 23:33Speaker 1: characters of the anime. I am not coming at this
- 23:38Speaker 1: with that energy. I know that the live action in
- 23:44Speaker 1: some ways seems to be trying to set some things
- 23:46Speaker 1: to rights that the anime fucked, and very purposefully in
- 23:52Speaker 1: a way that I'm sort of like hopeful about. I
- 23:55Speaker 1: also feel this way about Tashigi. There's a scene with her,
- 23:59Speaker 1: it's not like the we go back to smoker for
- 24:01Speaker 1: all that long. There's a scene between him and Garp,
- 24:04Speaker 1: and then there's a scene between him and Tashiki, and
- 24:08Speaker 1: Tshiki is like showing a little bit more moxy and
- 24:12Speaker 1: metal than she is allowed to in the anime. And
- 24:15Speaker 1: I feel like the moment where Robin is like, you
- 24:17Speaker 1: are just underutilized, is her talking to the character herself
- 24:23Speaker 1: that kind of didn't get enough to do. So we'll see,
- 24:29Speaker 1: but I feel confident, based on the track record of
- 24:33Speaker 1: this show that they are going to be able to
- 24:36Speaker 1: make Vivi somebody I like, And I'm just gonna sit
- 24:39Speaker 1: back and let them do it now. WHOA says one
- 24:45Speaker 1: hundred percent agree. Cool. Austin says this show is a
- 24:49Speaker 1: bisexuals heaven. Sarah Fimn says, I still don't see the issue,
- 24:55Speaker 1: nor do I really think he was ever trying to
- 24:56Speaker 1: make her badass as much as a young woman who
- 24:59Speaker 1: was in over her head trying to do her best.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I'm not sure when you say you don't see the issue,
- 25:05Speaker 1: you don't see the issue of why I don't like her,
- 25:09Speaker 1: or you don't when I say badass, I'm quoting other
- 25:13Speaker 1: people who talk about Vivi. By the way, I have
- 25:17Speaker 1: seen a lot of people refer to her as a badass,
- 25:20Speaker 1: and that one to borrow a British phrase because there
- 25:24Speaker 1: are no American ones that are quite good enough. That
- 25:26Speaker 1: does my head in whenever I see it. I'm just
- 25:28Speaker 1: like what t shigi? Yeah, Live Action is doing her
- 25:34Speaker 1: so much better so far. Agreed, And we haven't even
- 25:37Speaker 1: gotten to the icon that is Bonclay yet. I cannot wait.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Florien says, I look forward to your takes on Vivi
- 25:43Speaker 1: in any version. I just she just just cried a lot,
- 25:49Speaker 1: and she seems to really just not get almost anything.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Right ever, and it was very tedious. Ooh, there's a
- 26:00Speaker 1: deleted message. I missed it, all right. So this whole thing,
- 26:05Speaker 1: it's the moment that I was talking about earlier where
- 26:10Speaker 1: I felt like they were kind of fucking with me
- 26:14Speaker 1: for a second. Is we see somebody who is like
- 26:17Speaker 1: slumped against a mast in another destroyed ship inside of laboon,
- 26:22Speaker 1: And I was like, is this Brooke? Are we meeting
- 26:27Speaker 1: Brooke already? I didn't really think so, because the outfit
- 26:30Speaker 1: didn't quite look right and there was no afro, and
- 26:33Speaker 1: so I was like, I don't think so, but it
- 26:37Speaker 1: definitely had me kind of going hold on, hold on,
- 26:40Speaker 1: hold on. And then it's not it's mister nine, who
- 26:44Speaker 1: I think from what I recall, this dude is doing
- 26:48Speaker 1: quite a good job, because I remember mister nine being
- 26:50Speaker 1: pretty annoying, and this dude is very like it's giving
- 26:57Speaker 1: like you just got put on the varsity team and
- 27:00Speaker 1: you are just a little bit too big for your
- 27:02Speaker 1: britches about it. You know, Yeah, he really sucks. And
- 27:07Speaker 1: viv is you know, she pulls some things out here
- 27:11Speaker 1: and actually seems like they both get gripped up quick
- 27:14Speaker 1: of course, but she doesn't seem totally incompetent here. Oh
- 27:20Speaker 1: my god, I forgot about that. Florian says, you called
- 27:22Speaker 1: them Team Rocket the first time meeting them. I forgot
- 27:27Speaker 1: about that. And that's really I remember them in the
- 27:30Speaker 1: anime especially, like that still kind of works here, to
- 27:33Speaker 1: be fair, but in the anime especially, there was like
- 27:36Speaker 1: a vibe to Viv when she first shows up that's
- 27:38Speaker 1: a lot more like Cakli, not Cakli, that's not really
- 27:43Speaker 1: the right way, but she feels a little bit more
- 27:45Speaker 1: like a like mean girlish than she does here. And
- 27:50Speaker 1: there's just something about Team Rocket that always gives like
- 27:55Speaker 1: the rich twins who ruled the school kind of energy
- 27:59Speaker 1: and so oh yeah, that's where that was coming from.
- 28:03Speaker 1: But yeah, those so these two are not only are
- 28:07Speaker 1: we like encountering baroque works and we have the whole thing,
- 28:12Speaker 1: you guys, I fucking love Zorro saying they sent mister
- 28:17Speaker 1: seven to try and recruit me and needs to gasp
- 28:20Speaker 1: because of course they realize if Zora's talking about mister
- 28:23Speaker 1: seven in the past tense, that he must be dead,
- 28:27Speaker 1: but none he as sorrow, so you turn him down,
- 28:31Speaker 1: And Zora says, I was a little more cutting than that,
- 28:37Speaker 1: and then there's a pause. Eddie looks at her and
- 28:39Speaker 1: he says, I cut him in half. I really I
- 28:47Speaker 1: they they're giving Zoro in the live action like slightly
- 28:50Speaker 1: more Drax vibes for me, like just not quite getting
- 28:56Speaker 1: fully how to be cool. He's mostly cool without effort,
- 29:00Speaker 1: but everyhow, and then you're like, oh, dude, you know
- 29:03Speaker 1: it's it works for me. I find it very funny.
- 29:09Speaker 1: So I'm gonna jump over real quick to the scene
- 29:13Speaker 1: with Garp and Smoker because Garb shows up unexpectedly and
- 29:19Speaker 1: he has got Kobe and oh god, you guys, what's
- 29:26Speaker 1: his name? It's on a tip of my tongue. I
- 29:28Speaker 1: always forget. But he wants to speak to Smoker alone.
- 29:34Speaker 1: And so these two clowns are assigned to Tashigi to
- 29:39Speaker 1: show around town. And it's obvious that she's feeling a
- 29:44Speaker 1: bit of a way at being utilized in such a manner.
- 29:49Speaker 1: It feels like the way that the way that a
- 29:51Speaker 1: person reacts when they're told to go get us some coffee,
- 29:54Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I'm so sorry, Florian just
- 29:58Speaker 1: said haircut as his name. Sarafheim says, hellmepo, thank you,
- 30:03Speaker 1: sarahm for being helpful. Thank you Florian for not being helpful,
- 30:07Speaker 1: but you were very funny, so I will let it slide.
- 30:11Speaker 1: I also need to remind everybody bro playing Helmepo is
- 30:15Speaker 1: jacked as fuck, and I feel like it's very easy
- 30:17Speaker 1: to forget that because of his fucking hair. So this
- 30:20Speaker 1: is just a message to men out there, if you're
- 30:22Speaker 1: trying to look good, your hair is deeply important, because
- 30:27Speaker 1: if this dude can be as fucking ripped as he
- 30:31Speaker 1: is and still look like a goddamn goon, you know
- 30:35Speaker 1: the power that hair must have in order to completely
- 30:38Speaker 1: remove the hotness. It's just that strong hair is everything.
- 30:46Speaker 1: So figure it out. Even if you have to shave
- 30:48Speaker 1: your head because you're going bald, fine, it's a statement.
- 30:51Speaker 1: You just work with that. You figure it out. But
- 30:55Speaker 1: it's just really easy to forget, Like not only is
- 30:57Speaker 1: he cut, but he is actually quite attractive in the face.
- 31:02Speaker 1: It's just that the hair and the kind of goonish
- 31:06Speaker 1: way that he like goes about mugging sometimes you can forget.
- 31:13Speaker 1: But yeah, overall, like the he's like steps over to
- 31:19Speaker 1: Kobe at one point, and his fucking uniform is like
- 31:22Speaker 1: pulling where his pecks are because they're just like straining,
- 31:26Speaker 1: and I was like, Jesus, dude, you'd probably just want
- 31:29Speaker 1: to size up or stop doing just day or whatever.
- 31:35Speaker 1: So we have the discussion between Garp and Smoker, where
- 31:45Speaker 1: first I want to mention that Smoker tries to make
- 31:48Speaker 1: a joke about how the trainee pool must not be
- 31:50Speaker 1: very good looking over at Helmepo and Kobe and the
- 31:53Speaker 1: two of them. Rightfully, they don't say anything, but they
- 31:55Speaker 1: kind of look like what the fuck, and Garb tells
- 31:58Speaker 1: him to pipe down by bay basically just being like,
- 32:01Speaker 1: you were a fucking goober back in the day as
- 32:03Speaker 1: far as I recall, And I was like, thank you,
- 32:05Speaker 1: Garb put him in his place. And when they go
- 32:09Speaker 1: speak alone, what's going on here? We've already established, like
- 32:13Speaker 1: in the previous episode, that he is trying to keep
- 32:17Speaker 1: another pirate era from happening the way that Roger was
- 32:23Speaker 1: able to like inspire everybody, and he sees Loufy being
- 32:28Speaker 1: another like instrument of chaos in this way and thinks
- 32:35Speaker 1: that Louvi needs to be stopped before he ruins the
- 32:39Speaker 1: world essentially, and so he's like trying to explain this
- 32:45Speaker 1: to Garp, and I was sort of like unsure. I
- 32:51Speaker 1: couldn't recall does he know they're related, because like, you know,
- 32:56Speaker 1: we know that there's now this like kind of conflict
- 32:58Speaker 1: of interest here, And it turns out that yes he does.
- 33:02Speaker 1: He says something about, like, I know that you want
- 33:05Speaker 1: to protect your nephew, and gar stops him pretty quickly,
- 33:10Speaker 1: and I won't say like puts him in his place exactly,
- 33:14Speaker 1: because he's not really trying to. Garp realizes that the
- 33:20Speaker 1: approach here is not to simply tell this guy to
- 33:23Speaker 1: lay off, because that's going to really just look like nepotism,
- 33:26Speaker 1: which it would be. So what he has to do
- 33:30Speaker 1: is give Smoker or something else to focus on instead.
- 33:37Speaker 1: And the way that he sets this all up is
- 33:46Speaker 1: we've got people over here, like, once these clowns get
- 33:51Speaker 1: into the grand line, they're just going to be eaten
- 33:55Speaker 1: up by all of the higher tier shit they're going
- 33:58Speaker 1: to run into. You don't need to pursue them because
- 34:04Speaker 1: they aren't going to be able to handle it. It'll
- 34:07Speaker 1: be over and done with. But here we've got to
- 34:12Speaker 1: deal with some of the baddies that are piling up
- 34:20Speaker 1: and keep that from starting to really spiral out of control.
- 34:26Speaker 1: And he makes a pretty solid argument, you know. I
- 34:32Speaker 1: think that I'm not trying to pretend that Smoker can't
- 34:38Speaker 1: tell to a degree what it is that Garp is
- 34:41Speaker 1: trying to do. I don't think Smoker's an idiot, and
- 34:45Speaker 1: I think that he knows that this is partially just
- 34:50Speaker 1: a redirect and a distraction. But I think that Garp
- 34:54Speaker 1: is convincing enough in painting this as something to be
- 34:57Speaker 1: concerned about that it can be played off as like, yes,
- 35:02Speaker 1: it's a distraction, but it's just coincidentally a very real
- 35:08Speaker 1: problem that happens to be showing up as a distraction.
- 35:12Speaker 1: But that's that doesn't mean it's not valid and real,
- 35:16Speaker 1: you know. So I just really like the I'm wondering
- 35:26Speaker 1: about the ways in which we're going to continue engaging
- 35:29Speaker 1: with this plotline, because you know, the way that you
- 35:33Speaker 1: do TV versus the way that you do an anime
- 35:38Speaker 1: or like in a book. In a book, you can
- 35:42Speaker 1: like have a character basically disappear for ages and then
- 35:45Speaker 1: suddenly pop back up again because we need them, and
- 35:50Speaker 1: in TV you have to have somebody that's got a
- 35:54Speaker 1: contract to be in so many episodes, so they aren't
- 35:58Speaker 1: able to just disappear for a while. And so pop
- 36:00Speaker 1: up again the same way unless that's explicitly gonna be
- 36:03Speaker 1: how it works for them all the time. And the
- 36:08Speaker 1: way that Garp, Helmepo and Kobe worked last season, there
- 36:14Speaker 1: was a part of me initially that was sort of like, huh,
- 36:19Speaker 1: I mean okay, and I did get you guys had
- 36:23Speaker 1: me read some of the manga that happens like between
- 36:27Speaker 1: episodes where it's just what Helmepo and Kobe get up
- 36:31Speaker 1: to on their dawn time and the training that they
- 36:34Speaker 1: go through and everything. So like I knew that a
- 36:37Speaker 1: lot of this stuff was actually canon, but it just
- 36:40Speaker 1: wasn't stuff that we watched in the anime in real
- 36:44Speaker 1: time at all, you know. So I was like last season, going, Okay,
- 36:49Speaker 1: that's a smart way to do this, I think, and
- 36:52Speaker 1: it's giving them something to do. It is actually kind
- 36:55Speaker 1: of fun and interesting to watch. Good call. But now
- 36:59Speaker 1: we've read the point where I feel like that side
- 37:02Speaker 1: stuff has been somewhat exhausted. And I may be wrong,
- 37:06Speaker 1: because obviously I'm not caught up, so there's other things
- 37:10Speaker 1: that maybe, but like if it is stuff that is
- 37:13Speaker 1: coming from ahead of where I'm at at episode, like
- 37:16Speaker 1: I think, like eight seventy I finally reached just recently.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Then we're really compressing some things together. So I just
- 37:25Speaker 1: I feel like, now I really really don't know what
- 37:28Speaker 1: we're doing with Kobe Garpenhelmepo, and I'll be interested to
- 37:31Speaker 1: see because I also was wondering about Smoker, you know,
- 37:34Speaker 1: the storyline at there's something else I want to bring
- 37:39Speaker 1: up too. I can't forget, so guys, try to remind
- 37:42Speaker 1: me you said there was another thing. If I get
- 37:44Speaker 1: so tangented that I forget. But the whole Logtown storyline,
- 37:50Speaker 1: you know, we leave Loadtown and then we don't see
- 37:53Speaker 1: Smoker again for hundreds of episodes. I think it's like
- 37:56Speaker 1: a it's like a while. I feel like it's when
- 37:59Speaker 1: we're on the island with Caesar Clown. That's the first
- 38:03Speaker 1: time that we see him in a minute. So there's
- 38:07Speaker 1: like I was sort of wondering when we ended the
- 38:10Speaker 1: last episode, Oh is that it for Captain Smoker for
- 38:15Speaker 1: a while or what are we gonna And then we
- 38:17Speaker 1: have this and I'm like, oh, obviously, because we have
- 38:20Speaker 1: so much, so much more of Garpalmepo and Kobe in
- 38:25Speaker 1: the show that it makes sense that's how we're going
- 38:28Speaker 1: to Squeeze Smoker in there as well. But oh, Sarahim says,
- 38:34Speaker 1: and he shows up again in Alabasta. Okay, I couldn't remember.
- 38:38Speaker 1: There is like a period where he vanishes for a while,
- 38:41Speaker 1: but uh, he pops up so randomly in the anime.
- 38:45Speaker 1: It's really odd. But the other so okay, the thing
- 38:50Speaker 1: that I wanted to touch on that I intended to
- 38:55Speaker 1: last time and didn't, and I feel like at this
- 38:59Speaker 1: point it's not to happen, and I'm really sad about it.
- 39:03Speaker 1: I'm just registering with all of you. I understand why not, Okay,
- 39:08Speaker 1: I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. I really hoped, as
- 39:16Speaker 1: I was watching episode one that we were going to
- 39:20Speaker 1: get some hint of the filler episodes with Soanji and
- 39:23Speaker 1: the cooking competition, because it's like that big fish that
- 39:26Speaker 1: he like. It's a hint toward that, right. I just
- 39:30Speaker 1: really I thought that like maybe we might have like
- 39:33Speaker 1: a little you know. I it was. I think that
- 39:37Speaker 1: was the first group of episodes that you guys told
- 39:39Speaker 1: me I could skip because they were filler, and I
- 39:42Speaker 1: just went ahead and watched them anyway, and I just
- 39:45Speaker 1: loved them. I found them super fun and they are filler,
- 39:49Speaker 1: but like I had a great time and they don't.
- 39:54Speaker 1: They didn't. There is the mention of how the Baratier
- 39:59Speaker 1: bought all of the other like elephant tuna and are
- 40:03Speaker 1: making the dish that he made, which the old man
- 40:06Speaker 1: told him he would never serve in his restaurant. But
- 40:10Speaker 1: guess what now he is so Barazier. Like when Barazi
- 40:14Speaker 1: is mentioned, I sort of was like, ooh, are we
- 40:16Speaker 1: getting like a little bit of a maybe that's going
- 40:19Speaker 1: to be the cooking competition, is that the Barazier is
- 40:22Speaker 1: docked here somewhere else and Sanji is gonna go visit
- 40:28Speaker 1: and he's gonna have the cooking competition there, and that
- 40:31Speaker 1: maybe it'll be like him versus Zef's new protege or
- 40:35Speaker 1: something like that, you know. Uh, And no, it doesn't happen.
- 40:39Speaker 1: And I just wanted to reference because it was just
- 40:43Speaker 1: a little like it's a nothing plot line. It doesn't
- 40:46Speaker 1: need to be there. And I get that we just
- 40:49Speaker 1: have so much time, you know, but I was a
- 40:52Speaker 1: little bit like excited thinking maybe they'll do that, you know.
- 40:58Speaker 1: But anyway, so getting back to this one, we also
- 41:04Speaker 1: have the conversation like talking about how she's being given
- 41:09Speaker 1: a little bit more to do. Part of that is
- 41:12Speaker 1: coming from a conversation that she has with Almepo and Kobe,
- 41:17Speaker 1: and again she reacts poorly to being told that she's
- 41:21Speaker 1: got to be like a tour guide for these two.
- 41:23Speaker 1: But as as things work out, they are actually you know,
- 41:30Speaker 1: thoughtful marines that want to have like a real conversation
- 41:35Speaker 1: and take her seriously and are engaging with her on
- 41:40Speaker 1: a level that's much more than just small talk. And
- 41:44Speaker 1: so I think it's kind of a relief to her
- 41:46Speaker 1: to be like, oh, okay, I don't just have to
- 41:48Speaker 1: like plain nice and take you to get drunk somewhere,
- 41:52Speaker 1: and you're not going to become creeps that hit on me.
- 41:55Speaker 1: You know. I'm just thinking about like as a woman
- 41:58Speaker 1: in the Marines, where we see almost no other women
- 42:01Speaker 1: at all, probably so she has to put up with
- 42:05Speaker 1: that a lot. So this is when Kobe shares, you know,
- 42:12Speaker 1: we were told by Garp that a big part of
- 42:16Speaker 1: being a marine is not about taking orders, it's about
- 42:20Speaker 1: standing up for your own personal code. And this clearly
- 42:27Speaker 1: resonates with her. This is part of what kind of
- 42:31Speaker 1: later on there's the reveal where she's like at the
- 42:35Speaker 1: door when Garp and Smoker are talking to each other
- 42:41Speaker 1: and I can't remember where it is that they're seeing
- 42:44Speaker 1: is on fire, but she sees Robin in the mix
- 42:49Speaker 1: and realizes, like, oh shit, that woman that like gave
- 42:51Speaker 1: me her business card, that she's out here doing what now.
- 42:56Speaker 1: So she later on is being told I think that
- 43:04Speaker 1: she's going to stay behind and Smoker's going to go
- 43:06Speaker 1: off without her, so he orders her to do something
- 43:09Speaker 1: that she just straight up says no, and he goes,
- 43:13Speaker 1: excuse me, and she's like, no, I am going to
- 43:20Speaker 1: take a stand about something that matters to me. And
- 43:25Speaker 1: this is one of those things that I feel like
- 43:27Speaker 1: people in who have been influenced by media, I wonder
- 43:32Speaker 1: how many of them get like real rude awakenings when
- 43:34Speaker 1: they try and treat things this way. And that's not
- 43:38Speaker 1: at all how it works, because it's just such a
- 43:40Speaker 1: thing in fiction that like, you'll be tested on whether
- 43:44Speaker 1: or not you will take orders despite your own personal
- 43:48Speaker 1: misgivings about something, and the test always comes down to
- 43:54Speaker 1: good you had personal ethics and refused to do the
- 43:59Speaker 1: thing it was obviously abhorrent and immoral. But unfortunately in
- 44:07Speaker 1: the world that's really not how it works, and the
- 44:09Speaker 1: whole thing about the military is being trained to follow
- 44:12Speaker 1: orders without questioning anything at all times, and if you don't,
- 44:17Speaker 1: you really get punished. And her being like, I'm gonna
- 44:23Speaker 1: take a stand on something that I care about, and
- 44:25Speaker 1: there are swords out there that belong to bad people
- 44:28Speaker 1: that I want to get back. And I really love
- 44:31Speaker 1: this for Tashigi because I want her to have something
- 44:34Speaker 1: more to do and I like her taking a stand.
- 44:36Speaker 1: But as far as like this supposedly being like and
- 44:40Speaker 1: this is like a way to be a good marine,
- 44:44Speaker 1: I just can't help but giggle a little bit because
- 44:46Speaker 1: it's just so antithetical to like the point of the
- 44:50Speaker 1: military and obeying orders and respecting the chain of command
- 44:55Speaker 1: and whatnot that I often think about people who like,
- 45:01Speaker 1: you know, join programs where they think that maybe pushing
- 45:05Speaker 1: back a little against the authority is going to get
- 45:08Speaker 1: some kind of admiration, you know, And I have to
- 45:14Speaker 1: assume not. You're not the main character, Seraphim says. He
- 45:19Speaker 1: tells her to hold down and take charge of log
- 45:21Speaker 1: tamily heads up. That's someone. Yeah, I know, it was
- 45:23Speaker 1: something basically that was just like, you're gonna stay here,
- 45:28Speaker 1: so yeah, he accepts what she says, and I won't
- 45:34Speaker 1: exactly say that he's like impressed, but I do think
- 45:37Speaker 1: that there's a part of him that's pleased to see
- 45:41Speaker 1: her taking a stand at all, because she seemed sort
- 45:44Speaker 1: of wishy washy, you know. And that's I believe kind
- 45:50Speaker 1: of where we leave it with them for right now.
- 45:53Speaker 1: So going back to our friends inside the Whale, there
- 46:01Speaker 1: is a moment after we have caught our baddies where
- 46:06Speaker 1: they're talking about navigating the grand Line and viv says
- 46:13Speaker 1: something about like you need a log pose, and Nami
- 46:18Speaker 1: is like, a what, and you see Vivy just look
- 46:24Speaker 1: at her and be like, a lot, you you do
- 46:28Speaker 1: have a log pose, And I just think back, sometimes
- 46:33Speaker 1: there's a lot of this when I watched the live
- 46:34Speaker 1: action y'all. This is the first anime other than Full
- 46:44Speaker 1: Metal Alchemist Brotherhood that I've ever watched period, and Full
- 46:50Speaker 1: Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is in a lot of ways still
- 46:55Speaker 1: weirdly like grounded despite there being a lot of superpower
- 46:58Speaker 1: type stuff. One piece is like very distinct, you know.
- 47:06Speaker 1: And when I first started watching, for the first few
- 47:11Speaker 1: hundred episodes, it sounds nuts to say that, but like, yeah,
- 47:19Speaker 1: I think that I just really had a hard time
- 47:23Speaker 1: understanding that you just don't have to understand everything, you know.
- 47:30Speaker 1: I wanted to make sense of the name choices and
- 47:34Speaker 1: the costumes, and I just couldn't because a lot of
- 47:39Speaker 1: it is just bonkers, and it's bonkers for the sake
- 47:43Speaker 1: of it, which is its own beautiful thing. But I, like,
- 47:50Speaker 1: genuinely at times was just like, what what do you mean?
- 47:57Speaker 1: And I remember when a log pose was brought up,
- 48:03Speaker 1: and I got so fucking stuck on how stupid that
- 48:07Speaker 1: name is. Like, if you've watched this show long enough,
- 48:12Speaker 1: you just take it for granted, the log pose, that's
- 48:14Speaker 1: what it is. But like coming at it for the
- 48:16Speaker 1: first time, hearing the words log pose, You're just like, what,
- 48:23Speaker 1: that's the best you got? And I'm sure that partially
- 48:26Speaker 1: this is like a translation issue, but like, nevertheless, and
- 48:32Speaker 1: it just struck me here that you know, this is
- 48:34Speaker 1: the first time NAMMY's hearing of what a log pose
- 48:37Speaker 1: is herself, And she has a real moment that I
- 48:42Speaker 1: liked where it's not exactly imposter syndrome because it really
- 48:48Speaker 1: is just her suddenly realizing that I'm entering into a
- 48:52Speaker 1: place that I have no knowledge of and I have
- 48:57Speaker 1: nothing that I can reference regarding this place because there's
- 49:01Speaker 1: nothing to There are no books, there's nothing to research
- 49:05Speaker 1: that can really give me clues. So she has all
- 49:09Speaker 1: of these tools and all of this knowledge that sort
- 49:11Speaker 1: of ends here, and she didn't count on that. And
- 49:17Speaker 1: you know, the mention of the log poses the first
- 49:19Speaker 1: she's ever heard of it, and she's starting to kind
- 49:23Speaker 1: of freak out and be like, I am really out
- 49:26Speaker 1: of my fucking depth, and I could really get us
- 49:30Speaker 1: in trouble if I am the one in charge who
- 49:32Speaker 1: doesn't know jack shit about shit. What damage could I do?
- 49:37Speaker 1: You know? And I liked this. I think the actress
- 49:39Speaker 1: playing nam she really manages to make Namy feel vulnerable
- 49:45Speaker 1: here and there in a way that I wouldn't mind
- 49:49Speaker 1: seeing a little bit more of in the anime, in
- 49:51Speaker 1: a different way than we do. Not Me is vulnerable
- 49:55Speaker 1: in the anime often in a way of just like
- 49:58Speaker 1: she just doesn't fight the same, you know what I mean,
- 50:01Speaker 1: Like it's different, but this Not Me has like a
- 50:06Speaker 1: bit more going on. And I really love her acting
- 50:10Speaker 1: and I think that she really is bringing it. I'm sorry.
- 50:15Speaker 1: Florian says, you were so lost at times and sorry
- 50:18Speaker 1: to say it was entertaining. I'm like, it's one of
- 50:21Speaker 1: those things that I'm glad to hear that it was entertaining.
- 50:23Speaker 1: I'm sure there were times where I was frustrating too,
- 50:26Speaker 1: because you guys are used to this, you know, so
- 50:30Speaker 1: like watching me just get fixated on something and being like,
- 50:35Speaker 1: but why though, and you're all just like, oh my god,
- 50:38Speaker 1: get over it. Who cares why. I remember having this
- 50:42Speaker 1: feeling when I first started covering Song of Ice and
- 50:45Speaker 1: Fire way back when it was my first podcast with
- 50:47Speaker 1: my husband, and he got very stuck on the ages
- 50:51Speaker 1: of a lot of the characters in a way that
- 50:53Speaker 1: I was just like, holy shit, let it go. It
- 50:56Speaker 1: is what it is. It doesn't matter. There's so many
- 50:58Speaker 1: other things going on. Why is this the tripping spot
- 51:01Speaker 1: for you? Over and over? And that's just what happens
- 51:04Speaker 1: whenever you do something new. You can never predict how
- 51:07Speaker 1: somebody who's like brand new to the title is going
- 51:10Speaker 1: to react to certain things. And it's really weird sometimes,
- 51:15Speaker 1: Like I covered Hunger Games with Rashan and she really
- 51:19Speaker 1: thought Peta was like a bad guy. She was so
- 51:22Speaker 1: suspicious of Peta and really thought that he was about
- 51:24Speaker 1: to turn around and Stabcats in the back, and it
- 51:27Speaker 1: was hilarious and completely unexpected. She was just like, nobody's
- 51:31Speaker 1: just nice, what yeah, fuck this guy. And I'm sitting
- 51:35Speaker 1: here like I can't say anything, but I'm just like
- 51:38Speaker 1: my eyes are round and I'm just like, oh my god.
- 51:40Speaker 1: It never even occurred to me that this is gonna
- 51:42Speaker 1: be her takeaway, you know what I'm saying. So, and
- 51:46Speaker 1: that's like talking about the live action. There's something that
- 51:49Speaker 1: I'm really enjoying about it where I'm able to go
- 51:52Speaker 1: back and appreciate certain plot lines in a new way
- 51:57Speaker 1: that I think the first time around. It's not exactly
- 52:00Speaker 1: that it's not at all that I didn't enjoy the plotlight,
- 52:04Speaker 1: but it's more that, like, now that I have got
- 52:06Speaker 1: the frame of reference that I do, it means so
- 52:11Speaker 1: much more, you know, And you know, going back to
- 52:16Speaker 1: everything that happened with Surup Island and with r Along
- 52:22Speaker 1: and all of that, it was just a really different
- 52:25Speaker 1: experience now that I've been with these characters for so
- 52:28Speaker 1: much longer. So I really, uh, I'm having moments with
- 52:35Speaker 1: this and her mentioning the log pose, I just suddenly
- 52:37Speaker 1: had like a moment of God, I remember this fucking
- 52:40Speaker 1: annoying me that the log pose is such a weird
- 52:44Speaker 1: it's a weird name, it's a weird concept. The way
- 52:47Speaker 1: that it's described later by Crocus, I was just like, Yeah,
- 52:50Speaker 1: this makes as little sense to me as ever it did.
- 52:52Speaker 1: And it's fine. It doesn't have to make sense to me.
- 52:55Speaker 1: I don't need to get it. It doesn't matter. And
- 52:59Speaker 1: now that I I understand that, I can let go.
- 53:01Speaker 1: It's fine. So eventually we have we have a flashback
- 53:10Speaker 1: of Brooke singing Binks's Brew to La Boon, and then
- 53:17Speaker 1: we have a moment in the present where Loofy decides
- 53:20Speaker 1: to try to get through to La Boon by going
- 53:23Speaker 1: out there and singing Binks's Brew to him, and you guys,
- 53:31Speaker 1: it's the best. It's the best. He's singing it, and
- 53:36Speaker 1: he's got his hat and he's like shaking it like
- 53:39Speaker 1: he's fucking on vaudeville, you know. And it's a moment
- 53:43Speaker 1: of just silly showmanship. And then we zoom in on
- 53:48Speaker 1: La Boon's eye and him being sad and lufy kind
- 53:53Speaker 1: of like gets a little sobered up for a second,
- 53:56Speaker 1: and he says, people leave La Boon, but sometimes you
- 54:02Speaker 1: end up somewhere you never thought you would, and you
- 54:06Speaker 1: meet people who stay, excuse me, you have no right? Okay,
- 54:24Speaker 1: very rude? How dare you? How very dare you? It
- 54:45Speaker 1: got me? Guys really got me. As soon as he
- 54:51Speaker 1: says that, the camera goes over to Crocus, who's crying,
- 54:55Speaker 1: and I was like, yes, correct, respond and he says,
- 55:05Speaker 1: I need my friend's laboon, please, And La Boon opens
- 55:11Speaker 1: his mouth and lets them out, and you see Vivi
- 55:14Speaker 1: because she's been stuck in there, realizing that somehow their
- 55:20Speaker 1: friend managed to get this fucking whale to open its mouth,
- 55:23Speaker 1: and she's just like, hold on, y'all or really something,
- 55:28Speaker 1: aren't you Like there's just a look on her face
- 55:31Speaker 1: of I guess this is different than what I've seen before.
- 55:38Speaker 1: And can I just say again, as the idea for
- 55:44Speaker 1: part of the amusement park ride, you sail into La
- 55:50Speaker 1: Boon's mouth. You're inside for a little while, there's weird light,
- 55:56Speaker 1: spooky noises, maybe somebody jumps out at you, and then
- 56:00Speaker 1: eventually you hear somebody in the distance, very muted like
- 56:04Speaker 1: they're outside singing Binks's brew and suddenly the jaws open
- 56:09Speaker 1: and your ship goes out through the Can you imagine
- 56:15Speaker 1: how great would that be as a ride? It would
- 56:18Speaker 1: be the best. I love the whole concept. I want
- 56:23Speaker 1: this to be a real thing. So they come sailing
- 56:28Speaker 1: out and Moofy just you know, he has believed that
- 56:33Speaker 1: they have to be okay the whole time. But you
- 56:35Speaker 1: can see that he's still just like, oh my god,
- 56:37Speaker 1: oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. And
- 56:39Speaker 1: I love Crocush just saying well, I'll be damned. And
- 56:44Speaker 1: again this actor the tears in his eyes as he's
- 56:52Speaker 1: cheering the fact that they're still alive. Why is he
- 56:58Speaker 1: so good? They fucking nailed it, man with this casting.
- 57:02Speaker 1: I swear to God, marry a bad actor in the
- 57:08Speaker 1: mix anywhere, Like I may eat my words at some point,
- 57:12Speaker 1: but god damn, you know, over and over again, this
- 57:16Speaker 1: kid fucking killing it. So then we have everybody hanging
- 57:24Speaker 1: out in Crocus's yard and having something to drink. And
- 57:31Speaker 1: this is when Nami is talking about like, I don't
- 57:33Speaker 1: have the right tools, I don't have the knowledge. I
- 57:36Speaker 1: don't know what a log pose is. How am I
- 57:39Speaker 1: supposed to navigate you when I don't even know where
- 57:41Speaker 1: I'm going. I'm so out of my element and Zorro
- 57:48Speaker 1: helpfully says, out of our element is when our crew
- 57:51Speaker 1: does its best work, which I know that that's not
- 57:56Speaker 1: really materially helpful, but he's trying to be encouraging to
- 58:00Speaker 1: not me, and that's really the thing. And it's very
- 58:03Speaker 1: cute because Zora ever wanting to be encouraging is cute
- 58:08Speaker 1: because he just tries to act like he doesn't give
- 58:10Speaker 1: a shit, and he do. Though he give a shit,
- 58:13Speaker 1: he give a few shits. So this is when Crocus
- 58:21Speaker 1: explains about how the log pose responds to the magnetic
- 58:26Speaker 1: field of islands and how it locks onto an island
- 58:33Speaker 1: from one of seven possible magnetic fields, so even two
- 58:37Speaker 1: ships that leave the same place might not follow the
- 58:40Speaker 1: same course. And she's like, that sounds less easy than
- 58:46Speaker 1: it did. And he says, I've got an old one
- 58:48Speaker 1: lying around somewhere. I'd be happy to show you how
- 58:51Speaker 1: it works and give it to you for your journey.
- 58:54Speaker 1: And it's just such a lovely moment. He's like, my
- 58:58Speaker 1: adventuring days are over, and I think you're the right
- 59:03Speaker 1: person to have it. It's cute. Crocus is such a crank.
- 59:10Speaker 1: He says, some of the best navigators in the world
- 59:13Speaker 1: couldn't get as far as you've come already, and it's
- 59:18Speaker 1: just nice, you know. And Nami says, I couldn't have
- 59:22Speaker 1: done it without my crew. And this is the thing, guys,
- 59:25Speaker 1: is that the whole thing with one piece is just
- 59:27Speaker 1: how much these friends trust each other and care about
- 59:29Speaker 1: each other and rely on each other. And there is
- 59:34Speaker 1: just something about seeing their relationship in a live action
- 59:37Speaker 1: that hits different than it does in an anime. It's
- 59:39Speaker 1: not that it's like it doesn't work in an anime,
- 59:43Speaker 1: but there's a lot of time spent on fighting and
- 59:46Speaker 1: joking and it doesn't. When they say something about how like, oh,
- 59:52Speaker 1: I couldn't do it without my crew, it can come
- 59:53Speaker 1: across as very like kind of corny sometimes, or like
- 59:57Speaker 1: there wasn't enough work put in to make me believe this.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: And in the live action when she says I couldn't
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: have done it without my crew, that really hits. You know.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: It's part of Lufy saying you'll meet someone that stays,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: that really hits. And I just feel like, it's weird
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: how long it took for some of this to work
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: for me when I was watching the anime in the beginning,
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: because one would think with how drawn out A lot
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: of the story is that there would be plenty of
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: time to let these relationship moments happen and really feel
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: it all sort of gel but it's all very stretched
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: out with the same actions over and over again, partially
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: as far as I understand, due to the price of
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: animation and how we can't just be animating new shit
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: all the time, so we've got to like have the
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: same few frames for this one thing that we can
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: utilize over and over again. And so there have been
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: some things that have felt underdeveloped to me in regard
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: to the relationships between some of the crew members that
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: it takes like a really long time to fully get
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: there for me, and this is speeding up that process
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: a lot and just making the emotional beats with the
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: crew feel much more earned and real and like the
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: stakes I believe in our friends being in danger when
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: they're meant to be in danger, you know, there's like
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: a real sense of steaks. So yeah, I don't know,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: I just really really like this moment. So the episode
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: ends with all of our friends hanging out and on
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: the deck looking forward, and Nami says that this is
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: the next island, like up ahead, we can it's I
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: I can't remember. Actually, Namy's navigating and she's in a
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: weird shirt that I'm almost positive I remember from the show.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: It says something weird. I have been enjoying watching her
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: clothes because she's the one who's outfit like actually changes
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: it up. But uh, I we don't get Like. I
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: was thinking we were gonna be like, oh, there's the
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: next island, and the camera would swing around and we
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: would see the island ahead of the ship and get
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: a bit of a hint what it was like and
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: where we were going. And that doesn't happen. We don't
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: see and I don't know are we going to choppers Island?
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Is it gonna be the snowy Island? I honestly don't
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: remember the order in which things occur in the anime,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: and even if I did, I'm not sure they're gonna
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: do what I remember, So who knows. I'm so curious
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: to meet Chopper. But yeah, I'm pretty happy with this
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: season already, Guys, I'm pretty happy with it. Somebody needs
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: to really make this fucking amusement park. I want it
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: very much, I really do. Nohuah says whatever the casting
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: department is making it is not enough? Agreed. Yeah, So
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: that's everything. That's it. I can't wait to watch the
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: next one. I'm so excited. And I have to mention too,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: like the end credits are what do you call it?
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: They're like close ups of maps and charts and things,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: and it's a very simple end credits, but I really
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: really like it. I feel like credit sequences have gotten
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: so overwrought, like there's a sense on some shows that
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: like more thought went into what the credit sequence is
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: going to be like than the show. And with this
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: it's a very different vibe because the credits are at
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: the end instead of at the beginning. And thus we
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: just open with the hat on the bow blowing away
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: and then that piece of wood that slides over to
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: make the end for Netflix, and that's all we have
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: for the opening, and then we launch right into the episode.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: And I just vastly prefer that at this point than
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: sitting through a very clever opening credit sequence. We just
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: don't need it, and this at the end just feels nice.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: I like it. So all right, I'm gonna wrap up,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: but thank you guys again so much for hanging out
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: with me. Thank you Florian and Bernadette for commissioning these.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: I am super excited to keep going and until next
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: time to the lou motherfuckers. That was an unspoiled network podcast.
