- 0:05Speaker 1: FT senior insider Ken Rosenthal with us and he's a
- 0:08Speaker 1: boxing reporter. This week, that's what it felt like with
- 0:11Speaker 1: Trek Scoobel and the Players Association against the Tigers in
- 0:15Speaker 1: Major League Baseball, and the result is Schooble and his
- 0:18Speaker 1: Cy Young Awards physically win. Ken, you wrote this morning
- 0:21Speaker 1: about the heavyweight fight. Can you enlighten us with more?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yes? And basically what I wrote is that by overreaching
- 0:30Speaker 2: with what they offered, the Tigers and Major League Baseball's
- 0:34Speaker 2: labor relations department set themselves up to fail. And that
- 0:39Speaker 2: was my opinion. It's an opinion, it's not a fact, obviously,
- 0:43Speaker 2: but it seems to me that you had to offer
- 0:46Speaker 2: Trek Scooble more than nineteen million. You had to do
- 0:49Speaker 2: that before. When you were making your initial offers, they
- 0:52Speaker 2: were only slightly above David Price's record nineteen point seventy
- 0:56Speaker 2: five million in the initial offers, and then in the exchange,
- 0:59Speaker 2: when you go off for nineteen million, school book comes
- 1:01Speaker 2: back with thirty two million. If they had been higher,
- 1:05Speaker 2: in my opinion, their position would have been more defensible.
- 1:08Speaker 2: You had to get well above Price eleven years after
- 1:12Speaker 2: he sets that record. And when you didn't do that. Granted,
- 1:17Speaker 2: three person arbitration panel, you never know how they're going
- 1:19Speaker 2: to rule exactly, but it seemed to me it's schooble
- 1:23Speaker 2: because he had the right as a five plus player
- 1:25Speaker 2: to compare himself to all players, not just those in
- 1:28Speaker 2: his service class. Well, then you're bringing in free agent salaries,
- 1:31Speaker 2: you're bringing in Blake's now in his thirty one million
- 1:34Speaker 2: thirty eight million dollar deal. However, you want to look
- 1:37Speaker 2: at it before or after deferrals, and he had a
- 1:40Speaker 2: really strong case at that point. So it seemed to
- 1:42Speaker 2: me that again MLB, with the Tigers and MLB as
- 1:48Speaker 2: a heavy influence in this process, they sought to make
- 1:51Speaker 2: their point and their point was not going to carry
- 1:55Speaker 2: the day. Did not carry the day as it turned out. Ten.
- 1:59Speaker 3: You're bringing an opinion, So here's my opinion. Tell me
- 2:01Speaker 3: if I'm wrong or not. Majorally, Baseball was okay losing
- 2:05Speaker 3: this because of how low of a number they went.
- 2:08Speaker 3: They don't like the arbitration process. Was this almost like
- 2:11Speaker 3: a oh man, we totally lost moment. Oh next next CBA,
- 2:17Speaker 3: we're gonna go ahead and nix it.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Actually, Eric, I agree with you that they're not crushed
- 2:25Speaker 2: by this in any sense of the word, but not
- 2:29Speaker 2: for the reason that you just described that it's going
- 2:31Speaker 2: to be eliminated in the next CBA. I'm sure they
- 2:33Speaker 2: would want to do that with a salary cap coming
- 2:36Speaker 2: in and the arbitration system either going away or changing dramatically.
- 2:41Speaker 2: But the reason why I don't believe they are that
- 2:45Speaker 2: upset is because school Bolt was a rare guy five
- 2:49Speaker 2: plus player, right one year away from free agency and
- 2:52Speaker 2: coming off back to back cy Young Awards. How often
- 2:55Speaker 2: are we going to see that going forward? We may
- 2:57Speaker 2: see it with Paul Skens and that would be the
- 3:00Speaker 2: test case, but you're not going to see it all
- 3:02Speaker 2: that often. There's only been I believe, twelve players in
- 3:05Speaker 2: history who won back to back cy Young Awards, and
- 3:08Speaker 2: none before Schoogle as a five plus player. So I'm
- 3:12Speaker 2: sure they would rather have won than lost, of course,
- 3:15Speaker 2: But are they devastated. No. At the same time, to
- 3:20Speaker 2: me and I wrote these words, it's a major blow
- 3:23Speaker 2: because you lost, and you lost a very high profile case,
- 3:26Speaker 2: and you lost again in my opinion, because they just
- 3:30Speaker 2: didn't go far enough with what they were offering before
- 3:32Speaker 2: and after the exchange date.
- 3:35Speaker 4: With all these points that.
- 3:38Speaker 5: There you go with all the points that you brought up,
- 3:40Speaker 5: and I know Kratzy's talking about the CBA and everything else,
- 3:43Speaker 5: Like for me, I'm like, this is a huge, huge
- 3:47Speaker 5: win for the players expression arbitration is so hard to
- 3:51Speaker 5: win these things, and to see how big a difference
- 3:54Speaker 5: it was from thirty two to nineteen, I think we
- 3:56Speaker 5: got like Paul Skein's probably sitting back like, oh baby,
- 3:59Speaker 5: this is really good, and some upcoming players like this
- 4:02Speaker 5: is a huge number for players.
- 4:04Speaker 4: I just don't understand.
- 4:05Speaker 5: I think it's it's a lot deeper, and I think
- 4:09Speaker 5: the brass in Major League Baseball, I think that this
- 4:12Speaker 5: hurts some big time. I mean, do you see it
- 4:14Speaker 5: that way or you're just like, oh, it's a big blow,
- 4:17Speaker 5: but it's really not. But I feel like it's a
- 4:19Speaker 5: huge win for the players, Todd.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I see it from both perspectives that I just described.
- 4:25Speaker 2: A huge blow in the sense that you lost a
- 4:27Speaker 2: high profile case, not a huge blow in terms of
- 4:31Speaker 2: what it will mean going forward, because it was such
- 4:33Speaker 2: a specific profile that Schooble filled. Now at the same time,
- 4:38Speaker 2: looking at it from the reverse side, the player's side,
- 4:40Speaker 2: as you just described, Yes, it's a huge win. This
- 4:44Speaker 2: is a record for an arbitration eligible player. Wan Soto
- 4:48Speaker 2: had that record at thirty one million. Schooble now surpasses
- 4:51Speaker 2: it at thirty two million. And the other thing it did,
- 4:55Speaker 2: and this could help in the future, especially with three
- 4:58Speaker 2: to four your players who are arbitration and have special
- 5:01Speaker 2: accomplishments like schemes. It raised the bar for pitchers. It
- 5:06Speaker 2: finally brought the pitchers, at least the elite ones, the
- 5:09Speaker 2: very elite ones, up to the level of position players.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And one of the problems in arbitration over the years
- 5:14Speaker 2: that I know has frustrated the player's side is that
- 5:17Speaker 2: they've been unable to advance pitchers salaries in that process
- 5:21Speaker 2: as rapidly as position players. So yes, this does help
- 5:25Speaker 2: correct that. But again I will say it's a very
- 5:28Speaker 2: specific case. It's a guy who is five plus and
- 5:31Speaker 2: it's a guy with back to back Cy Young's. You
- 5:33Speaker 2: still't see that very often.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Now let's go to the Tigers a little bit more.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Here, Valdez gets picked up three years, one hundred and
- 5:41Speaker 5: fifteen million. School boy got his money. How do you
- 5:44Speaker 5: see this Tigers team now moving forward? I feel like,
- 5:47Speaker 5: you know, in those kind of meetings in the room,
- 5:50Speaker 5: they're gonna bash you all the way through. You think
- 5:52Speaker 5: Tarek Scooble is going to be that Guy's like, I
- 5:54Speaker 5: forget this. I'm gonna play my game, not worry about
- 5:57Speaker 5: anything else because of the Bologne that they went through.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Do you see this Tigers team making a push for
- 6:01Speaker 5: the playoffs and getting back in and making some damage again, Well.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Trek Scooble was most likely going to go to be
- 6:08Speaker 2: a free agent anyway, and most likely is going to
- 6:11Speaker 2: try to win his third straight Cy Young Award. No
- 6:13Speaker 2: matter what they said in the room. That's his makeup.
- 6:16Speaker 2: That's all players makeups. They want to be the best
- 6:18Speaker 2: they can be, and they're not gonna listen to some attorneys.
- 6:21Speaker 2: This was outside council arguing the case for the Tigers,
- 6:24Speaker 2: not the Tigers themselves. They're not gonna worry and be
- 6:27Speaker 2: hurt by anything, especially in Schoobl's case. He won, so
- 6:31Speaker 2: there's no reason for him to carry a grudge. But
- 6:34Speaker 2: certainly it will only, I'm sure, add to his motivation
- 6:38Speaker 2: and certainly also the team. Now, as I wrote the
- 6:43Speaker 2: day before, they do not intend trade Tarrek Schoobel. They
- 6:47Speaker 2: have not intended that the entire offseason their intention is
- 6:50Speaker 2: to win, and in speaking to a person who has
- 6:53Speaker 2: briefed on their plans, he repeated that to me. He said,
- 6:56Speaker 2: we are trying to win. So you have these two
- 6:59Speaker 2: pictures to coaess. Now, obviously Schooble is the ace of ases,
- 7:04Speaker 2: but Valdez is pretty good himself and has been an
- 7:06Speaker 2: ace on a World Series team. Obviously they got a
- 7:10Speaker 2: nice one to two punch. And I wrote, in addition
- 7:13Speaker 2: to hearing from that person who had knowledge of the
- 7:15Speaker 2: Tigers thought process, it makes no logical sense to trade Schooble.
- 7:21Speaker 2: You're gonna do that now and your fans are going
- 7:23Speaker 2: to revolt. Now, yes, you're only going to get a
- 7:26Speaker 2: draft pick back for him in return if you carry
- 7:29Speaker 2: him through the season and then of course offer him
- 7:31Speaker 2: a qualifying offer. But that's the chance you take trying
- 7:34Speaker 2: to win. And people have said, well, they can still
- 7:36Speaker 2: trade him at the deadline. I don't expect the Tigers
- 7:40Speaker 2: to be out of contention in the Ales Central at
- 7:43Speaker 2: any stage of this season.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Based on reading your article from today, seems like you
- 7:48Speaker 3: talk to people who are in the room or briefed
- 7:51Speaker 3: on what happened in the room. Did you get any
- 7:53Speaker 3: inkling or any any actual words that were said in
- 7:57Speaker 3: the case for Major League Baseball again, Arrek Scooble, because
- 8:02Speaker 3: I mean, it was a joke kind of going around
- 8:03Speaker 3: on Twitter, like what could they say? What would be
- 8:06Speaker 3: that like he threw the ball between his legs to
- 8:08Speaker 3: try to make it out in the playoffs, Like, I
- 8:11Speaker 3: don't know what they could have said.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I saw some of those tweets myself, Eric, and they
- 8:15Speaker 2: were very clever. My understanding without knowing specifically what was
- 8:20Speaker 2: said is that they weren't attacking Schooble. What they were
- 8:23Speaker 2: pointing out is that he is more comparable to in particular,
- 8:27Speaker 2: Jacob de Gram. Jacob de Gram had the previous highest
- 8:30Speaker 2: raise in arbitration. It was I believe nine point four million.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I might be wrong about that in that range, and
- 8:37Speaker 2: they were saying, well, if da Graham got that raise,
- 8:39Speaker 2: then Schooble should only get a similar raise. His would
- 8:42Speaker 2: have been with nineteen million dollars salary eight point eight
- 8:45Speaker 2: five million. So that was the argument. Not so much
- 8:50Speaker 2: Terrek Scougle's no good. I don't know that you can
- 8:52Speaker 2: make that case. But even the argument invoking de Gram
- 8:57Speaker 2: was questionable because de Gram was a four plus player
- 8:59Speaker 2: at the time he got that record raise, not a
- 9:02Speaker 2: five plus. And again, a five plus player you can
- 9:05Speaker 2: compare yourself to anyone. So it seems to me this
- 9:09Speaker 2: was not an attack on Terrek School. But and I
- 9:11Speaker 2: know hearings can get like that. AJ's talked about his
- 9:14Speaker 2: own hearing, and players have always said, you hear things
- 9:18Speaker 2: in there you never want to hear about yourself. But
- 9:21Speaker 2: maybe they pointed out a few things. I can't imagine
- 9:24Speaker 2: what they were. But really it was a case of
- 9:26Speaker 2: precedent for them, the league and the Tigers, and it
- 9:29Speaker 2: was a case of compul pitchers to ground being one
- 9:34Speaker 2: price being another.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And there was a lot of confusion about how all
- 9:38Speaker 1: of this works. I mean, I saw people that know
- 9:40Speaker 1: the game pretty well tweeting how you can't compare school
- 9:43Speaker 1: to free agents, and it's like, no, you actually can,
- 9:45Speaker 1: based on special accomplishments, the five plus the whole deal.
- 9:48Speaker 1: And now the aftermath from some people is, oh, well,
- 9:52Speaker 1: Schoobl's his own case and schemes, but everyone else will
- 9:55Speaker 1: still be in the same realm, And it's like, no,
- 9:57Speaker 1: I disagree on that one, because you can compare arbitration
- 10:00Speaker 1: to arbitration, and now you have Schooble there. So even
- 10:02Speaker 1: if you're a few notches below in the future, there's
- 10:06Speaker 1: a big gap between Prices nineteen and Schoobles thirty two.
- 10:10Speaker 1: So my question for you is do you think that
- 10:13Speaker 1: MLB will try and battle this in the next CBA.
- 10:16Speaker 1: This clearly seems like something that MLB is against and
- 10:20Speaker 1: the players are for, because you go to a panel
- 10:22Speaker 1: and you tell a narrative versus a number, which I
- 10:25Speaker 1: believe was proposed in the last CBA. Morey Brown, who's
- 10:28Speaker 1: been on the show before and it does a nice
- 10:29Speaker 1: job for Forbes, said he thinks this will further spur
- 10:32Speaker 1: them to make this a big point in the CBA,
- 10:35Speaker 1: not the top, but obviously one of their big points
- 10:37Speaker 1: to get rid of this, or to at least tweak it.
- 10:40Speaker 2: It has always been a point for them, and I
- 10:42Speaker 2: believe I have a line in the column saying they
- 10:45Speaker 2: can go after the system as they've done in the past.
- 10:47Speaker 2: I don't expect that to be any different. I expect them, maybe,
- 10:51Speaker 2: as more said, to turn it up. But if you're
- 10:53Speaker 2: going to a salary cap, which is obviously what they're
- 10:56Speaker 2: going to propose or at least try to get involved
- 10:58Speaker 2: with then, and you're not going to have arbitration in
- 11:02Speaker 2: any way this shape or form the same as that
- 11:04Speaker 2: is now anyway, So yes they will try. And yes
- 11:09Speaker 2: you're right Scott that a future five plus player can
- 11:12Speaker 2: compare him to self the schooble, but he's not going
- 11:14Speaker 2: to be schooble unless he's schemes. That's the difference. And
- 11:18Speaker 2: will it drag up those players perhaps, I just don't
- 11:21Speaker 2: know that that's going to happen. But in terms of
- 11:23Speaker 2: the owners not liking the process, they've never liked the process,
- 11:27Speaker 2: so I expect fully that they're going to at least
- 11:31Speaker 2: try to make, if not major changes to the process
- 11:35Speaker 2: through salary cap, somewhat tweak it if they can do you.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Think each individual team and this is another one of
- 11:43Speaker 3: my stupid series, but maybe it could stick because we
- 11:47Speaker 3: don't want players. The game is about the players, and
- 11:50Speaker 3: we don't want players against the teams, and clearly the
- 11:53Speaker 3: teams manipulate exactly what they think the teams should pay
- 11:56Speaker 3: the players. Well, we ever see a world where it's
- 11:59Speaker 3: going to be Major League Baseball versus the Players Association
- 12:03Speaker 3: for trek Scrugle for Paul Schemes and know more of
- 12:07Speaker 3: this piratesss versus Paul Schemes.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Eric, It's actually a fair question, and it's fair because
- 12:18Speaker 2: MLB is involved on the owner's side, the club side,
- 12:22Speaker 2: and the Union is involved with recommendations as well on
- 12:25Speaker 2: the player side. So to some extent, it already is that. Now.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I guess what you're suggesting is taking the player out
- 12:31Speaker 2: of the room entirely and going about it that way,
- 12:36Speaker 2: just having the MLB versus the Union. I just don't
- 12:39Speaker 2: know if the Union would like that. I would imagine
- 12:42Speaker 2: they want the players here in this stuff and want
- 12:44Speaker 2: them getting fired up when they hear these kinds of things,
- 12:47Speaker 2: because it shows in some respects how important it is
- 12:51Speaker 2: to have the union and the agents doing their work
- 12:54Speaker 2: that they do an arbitration. So to a very real extent,
- 12:58Speaker 2: it is exactly what you said right now. I mentioned
- 13:01Speaker 2: that the Tigers did not argue this case against Schooble.
- 13:04Speaker 2: They hired outside attorneys to do that. So well, Scott
- 13:08Speaker 2: Boris and people from the Union were arguing the case
- 13:12Speaker 2: for Schooble. The Union is very much involved, and maybe
- 13:17Speaker 2: not to the same extent as the ownership arm, the
- 13:21Speaker 2: labor relations department. I'm not quite sure about that, but
- 13:25Speaker 2: it is kind of union versus It'll be already with
- 13:29Speaker 2: the subset of the player versus the team.
- 13:32Speaker 5: With all these free agent signings going on, there's still
- 13:35Speaker 5: a couple guys out there, Zach Gallen, Bassett, Schurezer. Gallen's
- 13:40Speaker 5: the guy that for me, it's really intricate, but I
- 13:43Speaker 5: feel like he still has a couple more good years
- 13:45Speaker 5: ahead of him. Have you heard of any talks or
- 13:47Speaker 5: any inklings to where he might get picked up before
- 13:49Speaker 5: spring training starts here?
- 13:50Speaker 2: So, Todd, there's been a lot of talk about the
- 13:54Speaker 2: Cubs and Gallon really all off season. I don't know
- 13:57Speaker 2: that it will get there. I don't know even the
- 13:59Speaker 2: Orioles or the Padres or any of these other teams
- 14:02Speaker 2: seeking starting pitchers will sign Zach Gallen to what likely
- 14:07Speaker 2: will be a short term deal with opt outs and
- 14:09Speaker 2: give up a draft pick in the process. So it
- 14:13Speaker 2: seems to me, and I might be wrong about this,
- 14:15Speaker 2: I'm just giving my thoughts on it. It seems to
- 14:18Speaker 2: me the most obvious place for him to go is
- 14:20Speaker 2: back to Arizona on a short term deal with a
- 14:23Speaker 2: one year opt out so he can get back into
- 14:25Speaker 2: free agency next year off a better year and without
- 14:29Speaker 2: a draft pick attached. That would give him a better
- 14:31Speaker 2: chance to do what he wants to do in the market.
- 14:34Speaker 2: We've seen Scott Boris and with clients do this repeatedly.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Gollon is represented by Boris, and if the Diamondbacks sign Gowan,
- 14:43Speaker 2: of course they do not lose a draft pick. So
- 14:47Speaker 2: from that perspective, it just seems to me to line up.
- 14:50Speaker 2: I guess the question for the Diamondbacks will be do
- 14:53Speaker 2: they have the money to do that. They've got a
- 14:55Speaker 2: lot invested in some injured pictures right now, but they've
- 14:58Speaker 2: already got Meryl Kelly under contract. If you get Gallon back,
- 15:02Speaker 2: if even for only one year, and then Corbyn Burns
- 15:05Speaker 2: comes back in mid season, you have an interesting group.
- 15:10Speaker 3: That's kind of a loss for the Diamondbacks. They don't
- 15:12Speaker 3: get a they don't get a pick for him, for
- 15:15Speaker 3: him signing somewhere else. So the Diamonbacks they get they
- 15:19Speaker 3: do get Zach Gallon, but are they pushing in? I
- 15:22Speaker 3: get it. I get it. A team that's been in
- 15:24Speaker 3: on everybody. It's the end of the offseason, and I
- 15:28Speaker 3: saw what you wrote about me on Twitter that I'm
- 15:30Speaker 3: a buffoon, and then I hit below two oh nine
- 15:33Speaker 3: and I'm a negative. Oh that wasn't you, Ken. That
- 15:35Speaker 3: was the rest of Twitter. But I said about the
- 15:38Speaker 3: Pirates not actually being truly in what were you hearing?
- 15:45Speaker 3: Because some of those some of those were from you,
- 15:49Speaker 3: And so people are like, well, if Ken says it,
- 15:51Speaker 3: then it must be true. And I am saying it's true.
- 15:55Speaker 3: But your how how far of a level was it
- 15:59Speaker 3: that the Pirates We're in on some of these guys.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I'm not writing fiction, first of all, and I'm also
- 16:06Speaker 2: not writing just what the Pirates tell me to think that.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I understand fans think everything we do has an agenda
- 16:14Speaker 2: and we're simply puppets on marionettes. That's not how it works.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I'm not going to go any further. I'm not telling
- 16:19Speaker 2: you where I get my information, but I am not
- 16:22Speaker 2: the pirates public relations are obviously, so you ask how
- 16:28Speaker 2: serious they've been. And this is the question we talked about,
- 16:30Speaker 2: I believe the other day on FT. But we'll get
- 16:33Speaker 2: into it again here. It seems to me they are
- 16:35Speaker 2: making offers that reflect a player's value. With Ajohanes Swartz,
- 16:40Speaker 2: they offered him about fifteen. He got about fifteen. The
- 16:44Speaker 2: problem for the Pirates is that you can't be winning
- 16:48Speaker 2: that way. Players don't want to go to Pittsburgh when
- 16:51Speaker 2: they have better competitive teams or more competitive teams in
- 16:55Speaker 2: the mix for them. Suaz did that with Cincinnati playoff
- 16:57Speaker 2: team last year, the team that he played with for
- 16:59Speaker 2: seven years. Now. In the case of from ver Valdez,
- 17:04Speaker 2: they were in and they were aggressive, is my understanding,
- 17:08Speaker 2: but at that aav above thirty eight million. If I
- 17:12Speaker 2: had known they were going to get thirty eight million
- 17:15Speaker 2: from Ravaldez, I probably would not have even put the
- 17:18Speaker 2: Pirates in the aggressive category. I didn't know that at
- 17:21Speaker 2: the time I reported it. I just knew that they
- 17:23Speaker 2: were trying so to win these free agent battles, they're
- 17:28Speaker 2: going to have to outbid other teams. And if they're
- 17:31Speaker 2: not willing to do that, then you can understand why
- 17:33Speaker 2: they might not want to overpay players. Okay, then go
- 17:36Speaker 2: to the trade market and try to do it that way,
- 17:38Speaker 2: which they have in getting Brandon Lawe and Justinskin Justinskin Garcia.
- 17:44Speaker 2: I'm not pronouncing it right, it's the past word. Of course,
- 17:48Speaker 2: they have made some interesting trades this offseason, So I
- 17:52Speaker 2: don't know that they should be derided for trying. You
- 17:56Speaker 2: could say they're not trying hard enough, and that's certainly
- 17:58Speaker 2: a fair criticism because they have to do more to
- 18:01Speaker 2: get these players. But they did sign Ryan O'Hearn two
- 18:04Speaker 2: years twenty nine million, and they are still trying to
- 18:08Speaker 2: get another hitter, whether it's through free agency or trade.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Last team I have to ask you about raise his
- 18:14Speaker 3: eyebrows for me when I see them in on possibly
- 18:18Speaker 3: trading for Freddy Peralta and we're in on from ber Valdez.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Is the Minnesota Twins. When their name gets put in there,
- 18:25Speaker 3: I'm like, do they mean like twins of like like
- 18:27Speaker 3: two people who look alike that were born at the
- 18:29Speaker 3: same time? Twins? Like? How is what's your reaction when
- 18:34Speaker 3: you're hearing like that type of news from your sources?
- 18:38Speaker 2: I can't imagine. First of all, I did not hear
- 18:40Speaker 2: the twins on Valdez, so I can't take any credit
- 18:43Speaker 2: for that or any knowledge of it. Even that would
- 18:46Speaker 2: shock me. With where they are now, they're in an
- 18:49Speaker 2: interesting place. Tom Polott has taken over, Derek Falve has left,
- 18:52Speaker 2: Tom poll Out has said we're gonna be competitive this year,
- 18:56Speaker 2: and people have laughed at him for saying, well, you
- 18:58Speaker 2: say you're gonna be competitive, but but you're not spending
- 19:00Speaker 2: any money. So from that perspective, might they have thrown
- 19:04Speaker 2: their hat in the ring on Valdez. Sure? More likely though,
- 19:08Speaker 2: a Peralta trade would have been appealing to them, because
- 19:11Speaker 2: Paralta is making eight million this year, which is severely
- 19:15Speaker 2: below market for a picture of his caliber. Any team,
- 19:19Speaker 2: small market teams as well as large market teams could
- 19:22Speaker 2: have been in the mix for Paralta and absorbed him
- 19:24Speaker 2: into their payroll. So that would not surprise me at
- 19:27Speaker 2: all that they were in on Freddie Peralta. When they're
- 19:30Speaker 2: claiming they want to be competitive Valdez. Maybe they were in,
- 19:34Speaker 2: but in like the pirates, they were only going to
- 19:36Speaker 2: go to a certain level there.
- 19:38Speaker 1: It is Ken, Thank you very much. Fascinating week for
- 19:43Speaker 1: what first week of February. I'll say I enjoyed the weekend.
- 19:46Speaker 1: We'll talk to you next week.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Thanks guys. Chalut.
- 19:52Speaker 1: We've got power rankings, super duper early ones. SEEBS put
- 19:56Speaker 1: these out about a week ago. But we've been busy
- 19:59Speaker 1: and today we're a little it's busy, so we're ready.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Where the league stands with most free agency dost settled. Now,
- 20:05Speaker 1: keep in mind, there are a few moves that have
- 20:07Speaker 1: been made since this happened, so from Bravaldez affecting the
- 20:12Speaker 1: Tigers position on here. Let's keep that in mind when
- 20:15Speaker 1: you're scrutinizing their list. But have fun with it. We
- 20:19Speaker 1: can start with the tippy top top ten. I'll just
- 20:22Speaker 1: read it out and then get your thoughts. Okay, go
- 20:25Speaker 1: on to do it that way.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Go ahead.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Dodgers one, Brewers, two Blue Jays, three Cubs, four Yankees,
- 20:32Speaker 1: five Brave six Mariners, seven Red Sox eighth. The Mets
- 20:39Speaker 1: check in at ninth. Another NL's team, the Phillies at ten.
- 20:43Speaker 1: How did they do?
- 20:44Speaker 5: I think they missed one key team on here. I
- 20:46Speaker 5: got to be honest with you and you guys. You
- 20:49Speaker 5: guys know I've been on this team since day one,
- 20:52Speaker 5: criticizing them.
- 20:53Speaker 4: Where's the Orioles at Oh?
- 20:54Speaker 1: Where are my?
- 20:55Speaker 4: Oh?
- 20:56Speaker 1: Did I just say you're on the train? Now?
- 20:58Speaker 4: Just hop on the train.
- 21:00Speaker 1: On the train.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Wow, I'm on the train.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I mean.
- 21:02Speaker 5: First, when you pick up one of the most prolific
- 21:04Speaker 5: hitters in baseball and Pete Alonzo, you can't go wrong
- 21:07Speaker 5: with that. And I felt like they got him on
- 21:09Speaker 5: a nice, easy deal. He probably could have made a
- 21:11Speaker 5: little bit more money. Blah blah blah. We know the
- 21:14Speaker 5: whole story.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Undercover pickup Shane Boz.
- 21:18Speaker 5: I gotta be honest with you. I love Shane Boz.
- 21:21Speaker 5: I think he needed a little change of scenery, get
- 21:24Speaker 5: in a little colder air. He is funny as all heck.
- 21:27Speaker 5: I room with him in the Olympics. He's absolutely out
- 21:32Speaker 5: of this world.
- 21:33Speaker 4: He's pumping weights left and right.
- 21:35Speaker 5: Listen, Zach Eflin, I gotta be honest. The dude can play.
- 21:39Speaker 5: He can play, He's been there before. Is he gonna
- 21:42Speaker 5: wow you right now? Probably not, but another effective starter.
- 21:45Speaker 5: He's gonna give you, you know, long relief and long
- 21:48Speaker 5: times there. And the one I really liked too is
- 21:50Speaker 5: Ryan Helsley. Another guy that they can punch in pretty
- 21:53Speaker 5: much anywhere in that that bullpen and do whatever you
- 21:57Speaker 5: want with him. So there's a couple other guys, I mean, listen,
- 22:00Speaker 5: Leonti tavars Is Okay, Andrew Kittingridge, Taylor Ward from the Angels.
- 22:05Speaker 5: I think they should be I shouldn't. I don't think
- 22:08Speaker 5: top five, but I think they should be in the
- 22:09Speaker 5: top ten team that I would take off.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Oh, man, I would take off. I mean Brewers are
- 22:18Speaker 4: number two.
- 22:20Speaker 1: I think we need to get into that. After you
- 22:21Speaker 1: kick a team out.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Man, I would, I would kick off. I would kick out. Though,
- 22:25Speaker 5: my goodness, gracious, this changes everything. I'd take the Braves out.
- 22:29Speaker 5: I would take the Braves.
- 22:30Speaker 3: I would, I would. I would spot your I think
- 22:33Speaker 3: you're spot on with that. I think the Braves can
- 22:36Speaker 3: be shoot. I think the Braves can be second or
- 22:38Speaker 3: third best team in the league for sure. There's a
- 22:41Speaker 3: lot of canby though, there's a lot of canby if
- 22:44Speaker 3: this does. It was so it was so unlucky that
- 22:47Speaker 3: the Braves last year said, okay, five six of our
- 22:51Speaker 3: starters all got hurt like that is ridiculous. That's not
- 22:54Speaker 3: gonna happen again. All five or six of those starters
- 22:56Speaker 3: aren't gonna have cy young years though. Either they upgraded
- 23:00Speaker 3: in their bullpen with Robert Suarez. They brought back Iglacia,
- 23:03Speaker 3: who was unbelievable. He was great at the end of
- 23:06Speaker 3: the season. But sixth, I don't think. I don't think
- 23:10Speaker 3: they're six to me, I think the Mets and Phillies
- 23:12Speaker 3: are above them. Right now and they have to prove it.
- 23:16Speaker 3: I still think they're a playoff team. But really the biggest,
- 23:19Speaker 3: the biggest on this list is the Brewers. Like I'm
- 23:22Speaker 3: not sure what CBS was doing with this one. How
- 23:25Speaker 3: they had them up there. They were, they had the
- 23:29Speaker 3: most wins in the National League. I get that they
- 23:32Speaker 3: got rid of they got rid of pieces and added
- 23:36Speaker 3: what did they add again? I mean they added Did
- 23:40Speaker 3: they get Nolan McClain from the Mets for Freddie Peralta. No,
- 23:44Speaker 3: they got Brandon Sproute, who could be great. Obviously, I'm
- 23:49Speaker 3: not kicking the Brewers out of the top ten because
- 23:51Speaker 3: of what they've done and because of my love for
- 23:53Speaker 3: the Brewers, I will not kick them out of the
- 23:54Speaker 3: top ten. The Braves are kicked out top ten. And
- 23:58Speaker 3: if we could put the list of one time I
- 24:01Speaker 3: had a little bit of a switcher route, I think
- 24:03Speaker 3: the Mariners, whatever order it is, I think the Mariners
- 24:06Speaker 3: are better than the Yankees currently. I think how they
- 24:09Speaker 3: come into the season, they're better than the Yankees. I
- 24:12Speaker 3: think the Cubs are They're a little bit. I think
- 24:16Speaker 3: they're a little bit inflated on this list. Are they
- 24:19Speaker 3: the second best National League team? Because I kicked the
- 24:22Speaker 3: Brewers out. No, I think that. I think that falls
- 24:26Speaker 3: to the Phillies. Are Mets still until the Cubs prove
- 24:29Speaker 3: that they can have a great season. Is Alex Bregman
- 24:33Speaker 3: taking over for what Kyle Tucker did the beginning of
- 24:35Speaker 3: the season last year? Like you know, to me, I
- 24:40Speaker 3: think there's a there's a pecking order in the National League,
- 24:44Speaker 3: and I still think it runs through the National League East,
- 24:46Speaker 3: after you have after you have the Dodgers, so I think,
- 24:50Speaker 3: and I think the Mariners are ahead of the Yankees.
- 24:52Speaker 3: I think the Mariners are the second best team. And
- 24:56Speaker 3: I think maybe there's a world and I don't know
- 24:58Speaker 3: who I kick out or the Tigers should be top
- 25:01Speaker 3: ten just because they have a power packed lineup, our
- 25:06Speaker 3: power packed rotation. They didn't add to their lineup. And
- 25:09Speaker 3: I know this list came out before Framber Valdez was signed,
- 25:14Speaker 3: but you know, so that's where I would That's where
- 25:16Speaker 3: I would change. But if you told me at Tigers
- 25:18Speaker 3: are eleven, I'd be cool with that too.
- 25:21Speaker 4: H agreed.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I like a lot of what you said. Do you
- 25:25Speaker 1: want to see the bottom ten?
- 25:27Speaker 3: Yes?
- 25:28Speaker 2: Please?
- 25:28Speaker 3: Because I think there's some wrong ones on the bottom ten.
- 25:33Speaker 1: We're going from worst to not as bad thirty Rockies
- 25:38Speaker 1: twenty nine, Nationals, White Sox at twenty eight, Angels twenty seven,
- 25:41Speaker 1: Twins check in at twenty six. We put the Cardinals
- 25:44Speaker 1: or CBS did at twenty five, Pirates go to twenty four,
- 25:47Speaker 1: Marlins twenty three, Raising Florida next to them twenty two,
- 25:51Speaker 1: and the A's at twenty one.
- 25:57Speaker 4: I'm trying to think of who should be down there
- 25:59Speaker 4: that it's not there right now.
- 26:01Speaker 1: I think he's smart. Alecan has a name.
- 26:03Speaker 4: What do you got, Crothy?
- 26:05Speaker 3: I don't think the Pirates should be in there. I
- 26:07Speaker 3: think the Pirates have done enough to improve their team,
- 26:10Speaker 3: and they still have Paul Skins. Like the record, the
- 26:14Speaker 3: record or the stat that if the Pirates have scored
- 26:18Speaker 3: three or more runs in every one of Paul skien starts,
- 26:22Speaker 3: he'd be forty three to one. Like this team's offense
- 26:25Speaker 3: has improved, has their defense declined? I don't know. That's
- 26:30Speaker 3: hard to say. Maybe maybe there's a there's going to
- 26:33Speaker 3: be a drop off there, but with Paul Skiing's at
- 26:36Speaker 3: the top, I think anything is possible. I don't think
- 26:39Speaker 3: the Pirates are in that bottom ten. I also don't
- 26:42Speaker 3: think the A's of Sacramento. The Aths are in the
- 26:46Speaker 3: bottom ten. I think they did think every Mason Miller, absolutely,
- 26:50Speaker 3: JP Sears was a quality starter for them. I know
- 26:53Speaker 3: as Era wasn't great. I just think they started to
- 26:57Speaker 3: acclimate to playing in a Triple A park and how
- 27:01Speaker 3: they can use that to their advantage the last two
- 27:03Speaker 3: months of the season.
- 27:04Speaker 2: I think it.
- 27:05Speaker 3: I think it goes into this season. I think some
- 27:06Speaker 3: of their guys have There's there's the whole contract boost.
- 27:11Speaker 3: You get a contract and all of a sudden, you're
- 27:12Speaker 3: not like you're not sleeping at night. Oh man, if
- 27:17Speaker 3: I'm gonna get sent down a Triple A Wait a minute,
- 27:18Speaker 3: I'm already playing in a Triple A park.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Wait.
- 27:20Speaker 3: You know. It's just some of their guys are now
- 27:24Speaker 3: solidified in their roles, and I think they're I think
- 27:27Speaker 3: they're not. I don't think they're a top top or
- 27:29Speaker 3: bottom ten team.
- 27:32Speaker 5: Well, there's one team I think that should be in there.
- 27:37Speaker 5: I would say Tampa Bay had the chance of being
- 27:39Speaker 5: in Oh they are in there.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Now they are in there.
- 27:41Speaker 5: I'm struggling today. I think I think the power should
- 27:45Speaker 5: be there. Honestly, I mean, listen, what have they done.
- 27:48Speaker 5: They have Paul Skins, Yeah, and they still can't find
- 27:51Speaker 5: ways to win. Yeah. Did they get a couple of guys,
- 27:53Speaker 5: of course they did. But you can't tell me that
- 27:55Speaker 5: they're a top twenty team right now. I mean, listen,
- 28:00Speaker 5: they're on the bottom of the list in the NL
- 28:02Speaker 5: Central each year. They can't find a way to dig
- 28:05Speaker 5: out of there, and they hurt themselves at the end
- 28:08Speaker 5: of the day. So they didn't really get that much
- 28:10Speaker 5: big of names, and it's just gonna be the Pirates
- 28:13Speaker 5: of old.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Make Crats do what he's supposed to do, which is
- 28:18Speaker 1: if he is going to defend a team and say
- 28:20Speaker 1: the Pirates deserve to be twenty or better, I'm fine
- 28:23Speaker 1: with that. But you know the game. If you think
- 28:25Speaker 1: the A's and the Pirates do not belong on the
- 28:27Speaker 1: bottom ten list that is put together by CBS, you
- 28:30Speaker 1: must help them replace those two teams. There needs to
- 28:33Speaker 1: be a bottom ten. It's not easy. Trust me, I
- 28:38Speaker 1: went through the extra.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Give me a sack here, hang on, hang on, I'm.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Telling you it's not going to be easy. We can
- 28:43Speaker 1: literally go through the teams, it doesn't even take that long,
- 28:46Speaker 1: and you're going to struggle to find teams that replace them.
- 28:50Speaker 3: I'm looking I'm looking through my you can go through,
- 28:53Speaker 3: but I'm also looking through.
- 28:56Speaker 1: I can, but I think the exercise is fun to
- 28:58Speaker 1: do it this way. Okay, So you're not putting the
- 29:02Speaker 1: the Braves in there, right, they were borderline on the
- 29:05Speaker 1: top ten. The Diamondbacks, so you're putting them in the
- 29:07Speaker 1: bottom ten. I'm not Cubs, Red Sox Orioles. We're good.
- 29:12Speaker 1: They're not touching that list. White Sox are already in it.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I'm not putting the Reds in there. I'm not putting
- 29:17Speaker 1: the Guardians in there, not a bottom ten. Rockies are
- 29:20Speaker 1: in there already. Not putting the Tigers, not the Astros
- 29:23Speaker 1: for me, not the Royals, Angels are already in there,
- 29:27Speaker 1: Dodgers obviously. I'm just going.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Down twice twice.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Ls are in there already. Brewers are not going in there.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Twins are in there already, Mets and Yankees and Phillies
- 29:38Speaker 1: are not going in there. Pirates are in there already.
- 29:40Speaker 1: We're almost done with the list of teams. Padres are
- 29:43Speaker 1: not going in there. I don't think the Giant should
- 29:45Speaker 1: be in there. Mariners are obviously not in there. Cardinals
- 29:47Speaker 1: are already in there. Rays are already in there. I'm
- 29:49Speaker 1: not putting the Rangers in there or the Blue Jays
- 29:51Speaker 1: and the Nats are already in there. It is a perfect
- 29:53Speaker 1: bottom ten. It is perfect. They nailed it. It is
- 29:57Speaker 1: very difficult to agree.
- 29:59Speaker 5: To your point.
- 30:00Speaker 4: You can move a couple of teams.
- 30:01Speaker 1: That's fine, you know, to like, you.
- 30:03Speaker 5: Know, put the Pirates of twenty two behind the Athletics,
- 30:06Speaker 5: that kind of deal. You can do that kind of thing.
- 30:08Speaker 4: But I don't. I guess, yeah, I don't. I don't
- 30:11Speaker 4: see anybody else going in.
- 30:13Speaker 1: No Sunny Days in the chat said Diamondbacks are definitely
- 30:15Speaker 1: bottom ten. I mean that's fine. I respect opinions, but
- 30:18Speaker 1: I don't agree. I think that they could get close
- 30:20Speaker 1: to that. But I don't agree that they're bottom ten.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Okay, that's fair. I mean, I mean I can I
- 30:28Speaker 3: can definitely, I can see the Rangers. I can see
- 30:32Speaker 3: the Rangers maybe sliding in there, unless they completely change
- 30:36Speaker 3: the culture and unless Nimo is that shot in the
- 30:40Speaker 3: arm for the offense. I think, you know, there's a
- 30:44Speaker 3: possibility there. But that rotation was ridiculous. So yeah, you're right,
- 30:49Speaker 3: I would say I can't. I can't replace them, so
- 30:51Speaker 3: I can't take any of them.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Out over under Marlins bet MGM saying seventy two and
- 31:03Speaker 1: a half, Where are we going?
- 31:08Speaker 4: This is close? I don't think I think they'll be
- 31:12Speaker 4: under five hundred. But how far.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Big gap between seventy two and a half and eighty
- 31:18Speaker 1: one wins which is five hundred? Do you think they'll
- 31:21Speaker 1: fill in that gap? They traded away some pitching, they'll
- 31:27Speaker 1: probably trade away more pitching in Sandy al Contra. But
- 31:32Speaker 1: they kind of surprised some people last year. They won
- 31:34Speaker 1: seventy nine games this past season.
- 31:41Speaker 4: Man, you guys put me on the spot here, Why
- 31:43Speaker 4: don't you.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Just talk about shock taking.
- 31:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm gonna say under but really close, I'm gonna
- 31:49Speaker 5: say under under. Okay, I think that n AL least
- 31:54Speaker 5: is a gauntlet. I think it's some really good squads.
- 32:00Speaker 5: Want to see them when I like the Miami Mons,
- 32:01Speaker 5: I like the organization, like everything about them, But I
- 32:04Speaker 5: would say closer to seventy I would little under seventy wins?
- 32:08Speaker 3: What do you like everything about them? What is what
- 32:11Speaker 3: is the like about them? Like I like some.
- 32:14Speaker 4: Dudes on the team.
- 32:15Speaker 5: You're gonna you're gonna gonna speak up or you're gonna
- 32:17Speaker 5: speak out, let's go.
- 32:19Speaker 3: I mean, I like, I like some of the dudes
- 32:22Speaker 3: on the team. But that's why I'm taking That's why
- 32:25Speaker 3: I'm taking the over is because I think this is
- 32:28Speaker 3: under set, way way too low. I think if they
- 32:31Speaker 3: had said, like seventy four seventy five, I would have
- 32:35Speaker 3: been like, Okay, they won seventy seventy nine games last year.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Seventy nine games last year, and I think you sit
- 32:43Speaker 3: there and you go, okay, yes, I get it. They
- 32:45Speaker 3: got rid of their best pitcher from last year in
- 32:48Speaker 3: Edwar Cabrera, but that's what they've been doing. They've been
- 32:52Speaker 3: pumping out pitching and supposedly they have pitching galore coming
- 32:57Speaker 3: from the minor leagues. I think this is a seventy
- 33:00Speaker 3: I think it's a seventy four to six six win team,
- 33:04Speaker 3: and so I'm taking the over. I'm not taking as
- 33:07Speaker 3: big of the over as I have taken, but I
- 33:10Speaker 3: really like this one. I think they showed that they
- 33:13Speaker 3: can win games, and they're some of their position players
- 33:17Speaker 3: have really taken the next steps. And you have another
- 33:19Speaker 3: full season of stours, you have Augustine Ramirez behind the dish.
- 33:25Speaker 3: I love it. But I'm not putting any money on it,
- 33:28Speaker 3: because they could get rid of another picture, they could
- 33:31Speaker 3: get rid of Sandy Yep part way through the year,
- 33:33Speaker 3: and I'm so nervous about it. But they could also
- 33:36Speaker 3: win thirteen games against the Nationals, who have done zip
- 33:39Speaker 3: zero nothing this offseason.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Marlins have done just about zip zero nothing too. Don't
- 33:45Speaker 1: forget about that. Remember the article in the beginning of
- 33:47Speaker 1: the offseason from Evan Draulic about Marlin's Pirates and they're
- 33:51Speaker 1: maybe one other, and yeah, the Pirates did a little
- 33:54Speaker 1: bit more. Marlins didn't really participate again, so Pirates.
