- 0:14SPEAKER_04: It's a beautiful day for a story, adventure, and glory, new friends and old ones, too.
- 0:21SPEAKER_04: It's an excellent day to get swept away in a tale, so let us regale you Hello there.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Salutations Yes, Reg and I are back with you to share another of our favorite stories.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: Yes, we've returned to tell another tumultuous and turbulent tale.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Now, Reg, you're not going to poke holes in everything I say again, are you?
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: Why, Jonathan, I cannot promise that.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: You see, I am a hedgehog.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Poking holes is what I do.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, but it's in my nature.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: I can feel it in my quills.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: It is my modus operandi.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: I must always Reg Can I continue with the story?
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: This is the story of Rumpel Stilskin.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Excuse me.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: What?
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: What?
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: What is the fellow's name?
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Rumpel Stiltskin.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: That's preposterous.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: That's his name.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: What kind of ludicrous name is Rump?
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Well Stilskin.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: You you do know what rump means, don't you?
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: Reg.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: Rump means buttocks.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Are you finished?
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: Wait, wait, wait, one moment.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm finished.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Great.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: Let's just get on with the story, shall we?
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: We shall.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: There once was a miller who liked to tell tall tales.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: Just one second.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: What's a miller?
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: I'm a miller.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: I grind grain in my mill to make flour.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: Well, that's what you do for a living, but this story actually involves your beautiful daughter.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, she is beautiful.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: But she's also smart and creative and very funny.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: You're right.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: Not sure why the original story never mentioned those important qualities.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Uh continuing.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: One day, the miller was out and about about what?
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: I was out and I milled about.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Heh heh.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: And who did you see?
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Well, I came across the king and I told him a tale.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: A tall tale.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: The miller sugarcoated the truth and baked up some malarkey.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: He told the king that his daughter could spin straw into gold.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: So of course the king was impressed.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Spinning straw into gold?
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Ho ho ho! Now that's delightful.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Bring her to my palace tomorrow.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: I must put her to the test.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: So the next day, the miller and his daughter headed to the palace, and the daughter she has a name.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Yes, that would make sense.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: But you don't even have a name.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: The Miller.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: I'm called Humbert.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: Would you like me to call you uh Humbert from now on?
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Nah, Miller's fine.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: But my daughter's name was Daphne.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: My apologies to Daphne.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: So Daphne and the Miller were at the castle, and a guard led Daphne into a huge round room.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: It was floor to ceiling filled with bales of hay, and in the middle of the room was a spinning wheel, and the king said, Get to work, Daphne!
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: And if by tomorrow you haven't spun this straw into gold, the punishment will be death.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Excuse me, just a moment.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: What is it now, Reg?
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: Don't you think that's a little extreme?
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: Well, yes, but kings didn't have much to worry about back then.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: They could throw fits over the slightest disturbance.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: A tapestry askew, a pastry too jammy, lying about turning straw into gold, whatever it was, it was off with their heads.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: So, needless to say, once he shut and locked the doors to the room, and Daphne could hear the king yelling about old pecans and his scone, she burst into tears.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness, how will I ever do this?
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: Daphne had never spun straw into anything.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: She didn't know where to start.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: As she buried her head in her hands, Daphne heard a creak.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: As the large doors to the straw-filled room opened a crack.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: To her surprise, a small man in a pointy hat and pointy shoes with a long pointy beard came through.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Ooh, a lawn gnome! No, not a lawn gnome.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: Though I have to admit he is described similarly.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: Anyway, the tiny man entered the room, took off his pointed hat, and headed toward Daphne.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: Good evening, Miller's daughter.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: Why are you crying so dear?
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: You'll get the straw all wet.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, I have to spin all the straw to gold by tomorrow.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: I don't know how to do it, and the king will kill me if I don't.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: The little man took big steps around the room, looking the bales of hay up and down and stroking his beard.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: Give you?
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: It must be something special to you.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Why I guess I've got my necklace.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: My mother gave it to me.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: As soon as the words left her lips, the little man snatched her necklace.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: It was immediately out of sight.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: He shooed her from the spinning wheel, took her seat in front, and began to spin the straw.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: And the first reel was full.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Daphne saw it herself.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: The man had spun a golden thread from pure straw.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Hmm, I can't really put a hedgehog pawned why.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: But I've got to meet this man.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so Daphne was delighted.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Oh I'm so delighted.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: She settled into a bale of straw in the corner and let the little man work.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: He spun the wheel, and each time the reel ended up full of pure gold thread.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: By the time Daphne awoke, the little man had vanished, and the reels were completely full of gold thread.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: The king was delighted.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: My stars! The lying miller was right.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Hey, I'm no liar.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: Sorry, Miller, it's what the king said.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: You weren't told Daphne's name, but somehow you know the king called the miller a liar.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: Well yes.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: Absurd.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Anyway, the king may have been delighted, but he was also hankering for some more gold.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: He took Daphne by the hand and led her to a new room down the hall.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: This room was twice the size of the first room, and was filled with twice the amount of straw.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Now spin this room's straw into gold by tomorrow.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: If you truly care about your life, you'll do it again.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: But as soon as he stepped out and she could hear the click of the lock, Daphne burst into tears.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Just my luck.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: The door to the room opened a crack, and there was the little man again.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Hello, dearie What will you give me if I spin all this straw into gold for you?
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: Daphne thought for a moment.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Um the ring on my finger?
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: So the little man took the ring from Daphne's finger and made it disappear into an unseen pocket in his vest.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: He began to work while Daphne closed her eyes.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: When she awoke, the room was filled with golden thread.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: She's sleeping through everything.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: But the king isn't.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: As you'd probably expect, he took one look at that room and was over the moon.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Again, I'm delighted.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: Great Now may I go home?
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: No Nope No But you said if I a buppet butt I want more gold.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: You haven't spun enough.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: Follow me So Daphne followed the king out of the second room, down the hallway.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Oh I can see where this is going.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: Oh can you?
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: They walked down the passageway to a larger room, didn't they?
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: Oh they went to a larger room down the hallway.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: By George, I knew it! I'm telling the story now.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: Way to go, Reg Do you mean that?
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: Not really, because narrating is my job.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: Oh right oh.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: I'll stick with the hedgehog stuff.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: So the king led Daphne down the hall to the largest room she had seen in the palace thus far.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: It was filled floor to ceiling with straw again.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: My goodness, the king was greedy.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: But Reg, you just said you wanted a room full of gold-filled reels too.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: He's the smallest room, mind you.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: I am just a little hedgehog after all.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: Okay, fine, but now the king and Daphne were in the largest room full of straw.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Daphne, here comes the final phase of your test.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: The final phase?
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: Tonight you will spin all this straw into gold, and when you're through, I will be the richest king in the land, and you will be my queen.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: What?
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: Yes, Reg.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: The king told Daphne if she spun the straw into gold for the third time, she'd be his queen.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Are you really surprised?
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Reg?
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: Are you okay?
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: I'm trying my best not to poke holes!
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, Reg, just do it.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: How are they getting married?
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: They don't even know each other, let alone love each other.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: They've spoken, what, three, maybe four times?
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: All about spinning straw into gold! This is preposterous.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Well, don't you think Daphne would want to be queen?
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: And furthermore! Say what now?
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Well, I can envision a mutually beneficial partnership between the two of them.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: Only if Daphne could spin the third room of straw into gold.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: But she didn't know how, exactly.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: So as soon as the king left, the lock turned in the door with a click, and his footsteps disappeared down the hall.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: She burst into tears?
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Well, maybe you should tell the story now, Reg.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: Ugh.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: No, thank you very much.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: You are the narrator.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: So please go ahead and narrate.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: Daphne burst into tears.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: Oh what shall I do?
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: Where is that little man when I need him?
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: Hoo me Oh, you're back.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Can you help me once more?
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: What will you give me, dearie?
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: Well, I already gave you my necklace and my ring.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: Yes, but for this job I need my due payment.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Well I don't have anything else.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Ooh ooh ooh she could give a lock of her hair or her shoes.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: Did she have a hat?
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: It's got to be something of great value to you, dear When I'm queen, I'll have many things of value.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: But to you are those important?
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: Well not really.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: Hmm This is a lot of work.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: So I'll need something very important.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: Oh I've got it I will spin this room of straw for you so you can become queen.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: If you promise to me your firstborn child I know you want to say something, Reg.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: I can see your quills trembling.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: Just say it.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: So instead of money, in this story, we use trinkets, bubbles, and babies Yep, that's how the story goes.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: I guess I truly am unable to predict the plot of this tale.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: This tall tale.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Anyway, Daphne stared at the little man for a second longer than usual.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Then she eyed her massive piles of straw.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: She needed the straw spun to gold, or else she'd be killed.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: Also, being queen was very appealing.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Who knows what the future might bring, she thought.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Daphne was too caught up in her haste.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: She leaned forward and whispered to the little man, Oh help me, little man, you're my only hope.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: And with a delighted squeal, the little man took his seat at the spinning wheel and began to spin.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And when the morning came, the room was full of gold thread.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: When the king saw all of the gold, he was delighted.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: How'd you know, Reg?
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: Had a hunch.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: Well, he was delighted.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Everything was as he desired, so he whisked Daphne away, and Daphne became queen.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, good times.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, you're still here, Miller.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Just no more lying aloud.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: On with the story.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: A year passed and Daphne, the queen, gave birth to a beautiful baby.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: She was so happy with her new life and as a new mother that the little man never even crossed her mind.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: But one day, just like before, he suddenly showed up.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: Daphne stood between the man and her baby's bassinet.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: No, you cannot have my child.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, but you promised.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: A deal's a deal, your Majesty.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: I'll give you anything.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: I now have riches beyond compare.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: Do you want furs?
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: Jewels?
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: Anything you want.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: Just don't take my baby.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: Hm if it's of great importance to you, it is valuable to me.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: Furs and jewels don't matter.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: I'm taking your child.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Ah, but remember, Daphne was beautiful and funny, and also intelligent.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: Yes, Miller, she was very smart.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: She wiped her tears and tried a different angle with the little man.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: Um how about a bargain?
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: The little man never could turn down a deal.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: Hmm Fine.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: You have three days.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: If you can figure out my name before that time is up, you shall keep your child.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Daphne thought all night about every name she knew, and when the little man showed up to the nursery the next evening, she tried those.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: Could it be Jeremy or Abraham?
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: Peter or Tyrone?
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: Not those Ooh, what fun.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: Try our names.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: You want me to change the story again?
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Just try.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: So the Queen tried.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: Could it be Jonathan or Reginald?
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Or Miller Oh come on.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: Who I dare say this is funny Nope none of these is my name And with that the little man left.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: Aww Queen Daphne had her people comb the streets of the village for all kinds of curious names.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: Could your name be banjo, short ribs, pamelo, or spare tire?
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, and certainly not.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: On the third day, Queen Daphne decided to take matters into her own hands.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: She walked all over town to find any clues to the little man's name.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: She was just about to give up when she noticed a small plume of smoke coming from the woods.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: When she approached, she saw the little man singing and dancing around a fire pit in front of a little cabin.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Tonight, tonight my plans I make.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: Tomorrow, tomorrow the baby I take, the queen will never win the game, for Rumpelstiltskin is my name.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: Rumpel Stiltskin?
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: What an odd name.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: You said it.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: And that evening, when the little man came to Queen Daphne's nursery to collect her child, she tried guessing his name again.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: So you're sure your name isn't Mordor?
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: No.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: How about Maleficent?
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: Baby Yoda Wrong again, dearie Now give me your child He lunged for the baby's bassinet.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: Wait.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: Is it possible?
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: Your name is Rumpel Stiltskin?
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: The little man stopped mid-lunge.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: He turned beet red, began stamping his feet and screaming.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: No, no, no! You tricked me! I just know you did! Rumpel Stiltskin was so upset he continued to shout and stamp his feet in protest.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: Oh look what you've done! I'm melting! I'm melting! Oh the world, what a world, I'm melting Just kidding.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: Toodles And with one big poof of smoke he was gone.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: I like that story.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: Of course you do.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: It was your story.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: Ah, it was more Daphne's And your lies.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: Excuse me.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: My tall tales Let's wrap this up, shall we?
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: And so Queen Daphne and her child lived happily ever after.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: Well, Reg, story's over.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: Got any more holes to poke?
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Just one.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: Was his name really Rump?
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: Wolstilskin's hilarious.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: Well, nothing left to be said, but the end of the This has been a John in Character production.
