- 0:42Speaker 1: All right, welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show,
- 0:45Speaker 1: the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world,
- 0:47Speaker 1: over twelve and a half years strong. We've got a
- 0:49Speaker 1: great show coming to you this week. I'm Jeff Warren
- 0:52Speaker 1: here with my buddy Len Hunsicker. Buddy, it's great to
- 0:55Speaker 1: have you on the show man. Happy Holidays to you,
- 0:58Speaker 1: my friend.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm I've told you before we started the show.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I've just finally started my Christmas shopping, so got a
- 1:07Speaker 2: bunch of done today and I have more done tomorrow.
- 1:10Speaker 2: But hopefully you're all doing well with that and it's
- 1:13Speaker 2: not stressing me out too much as it is me.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you do get stressed, you know. It's just sing
- 1:18Speaker 1: of the gifts. It's figuring out what to get for
- 1:20Speaker 1: everybody that you need to get for.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Usually December twenty sixth. I just exhale.
- 1:27Speaker 1: It shouldn't be this stressful. It really should. But you know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I know, the commercialization of this stuff.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Yes, that's what it is.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I mean. I actually had neighbors that had like those
- 1:38Speaker 1: professional Christmas lights where they call the company and the
- 1:41Speaker 1: company came out and put up the lights that are
- 1:43Speaker 1: all like real nice, like perfectly apart from each other.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Like I'm talking right before Halloween.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Do it yourself. What's the point it was.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Right before Halloween? I mean I've been looking at Christmas Christmas. Yes, yes,
- 1:57Speaker 1: like they high.
- 1:57Speaker 2: They're gonna tell me they came out for Halloween and
- 1:59Speaker 2: did that and then going back for Christmas.
- 2:01Speaker 1: A couple of days before Halloween. I don't know. I'm
- 2:03Speaker 1: thinking that some of these companies that do the professional
- 2:06Speaker 1: Christmas lights maybe have some sort of deal. If you
- 2:09Speaker 1: have them up for two months, you know, they give
- 2:11Speaker 1: you like a discount of maybe fifty bucks. I do
- 2:14Speaker 1: have no idea. I don't even know how much it costs.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Well, it's great if you had a discount for fifty bucks,
- 2:18Speaker 2: but guess where all that goes back in your electric bills?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, you know, exactly. A great point. Oh my gosh.
- 2:26Speaker 1: But like I don't mind it, seriously. I'm like one
- 2:28Speaker 1: of those people. If people want to put up their
- 2:31Speaker 1: freaking Christmas lights before Thanksgiving, let them put them up.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I don't care. I really don't care anymore.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I don't And if you and if you just keep
- 2:38Speaker 2: them up afterwards and you're lazy, you don't want to
- 2:39Speaker 2: put them down. I don't. I don't hate that either.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I mean, you're not going to put them on, But
- 2:43Speaker 2: I get not being in any rush to like take
- 2:46Speaker 2: them down. Winner.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I do love. I do love when it's
- 2:51Speaker 1: May and people still have their Christmas lights. It's hilarious.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I think I think my parents got into like April
- 2:58Speaker 2: one year, Oh my god, nice, before my dad finally
- 3:01Speaker 2: took him down.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So yeah, it's like, God, it's April firs. Am I
- 3:06Speaker 1: gonna take down the lights tonight? No April fools.
- 3:10Speaker 2: At that point, you know it's only another you know,
- 3:14Speaker 2: eight months away, just like right exactly.
- 3:17Speaker 1: My gosh, Oh buddy, we got a good show here.
- 3:20Speaker 1: We got a good show this week, folks. We are
- 3:22Speaker 1: gonna get into some Flyers talk. They are fourth in
- 3:25Speaker 1: the Metropolitan Division as of us recording. This still fun
- 3:29Speaker 1: watching this team. I mean ups and downs, but it's
- 3:31Speaker 1: fun watching this team. Now we're gonna get yeah.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Big win, big win tonight against Sorry, I just I
- 3:38Speaker 2: was gonna say a good win tonight against Montreal.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yes, very good win, one for to one, correct, yeah,
- 3:44Speaker 1: yeah for one, a great great win. We're gonna just
- 3:47Speaker 1: dive into them. Our thoughts on what we're seeing from
- 3:50Speaker 1: this team this season, and then Philadelphia Union, we're gonna
- 3:53Speaker 1: be diving into them lens on the show, so we
- 3:55Speaker 1: could talk some soccer here. They have made some moves,
- 4:00Speaker 1: we'll just say that, and a lot of Union Nation
- 4:04Speaker 1: Union fans are not happy with some of these moves,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and we're going to dive into that for sure. Then
- 4:09Speaker 1: let it. I are going to get into college football
- 4:12Speaker 1: here as we are looking at the college football playoff,
- 4:16Speaker 1: the bowl season, our thoughts on you know, some storylines
- 4:20Speaker 1: that are happening right now in the college football world.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And then we're gonna get as an NFL talk, some
- 4:24Speaker 1: Eagles talk as well. Certain teams have been eliminated from
- 4:28Speaker 1: the postseason in the NFL. We're gonna say goodbye to
- 4:31Speaker 1: some of those teams. We wanted to dive into that.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And then what we're thrown down on the table this week.
- 4:35Speaker 1: We got our good friend OJ Spivey from the Philadelphia Tribune.
- 4:38Speaker 1: He's going to be discussing with us how this Eagles
- 4:41Speaker 1: team is really looking after a dominant victory after the
- 4:43Speaker 1: Los Angeles or I'm sorry, after the Las Vegas Raiders.
- 4:47Speaker 1: They just took they just dominated the Raiders this past
- 4:50Speaker 1: week and what should we be expecting from this team
- 4:53Speaker 1: given the fact that they did beat a lowly team
- 4:56Speaker 1: like the Raiders. It's gonna be a good conversation with
- 4:58Speaker 1: Oj and Len. I guess we should start off really
- 5:02Speaker 1: talking about this Flyers team, because again, like they are
- 5:05Speaker 1: so fun to watch. They have been like again, ups
- 5:08Speaker 1: and downs. For sure. I love the fact of that
- 5:13Speaker 1: Trevor Zegris, I mean, he continues to shine, you know,
- 5:18Speaker 1: just about game after game and even though sometimes he's
- 5:21Speaker 1: not able to always bring it home for the team.
- 5:24Speaker 1: This is what this team has been looking for in
- 5:27Speaker 1: terms of that that that spark that we can just
- 5:30Speaker 1: kind of count on, and I absolutely love watching him play.
- 5:33Speaker 1: There's you know, Dan Vladar in front of net has
- 5:37Speaker 1: been really fantastic in so many ways. I just this team,
- 5:41Speaker 1: this Flyers team, even Rick Tocket for his flaws, because
- 5:45Speaker 1: we've seen some flaws already that a lot of folks
- 5:48Speaker 1: within Flyers Nation are not happy with. And of course
- 5:50Speaker 1: there's that segment of the Flyers fan population that's never
- 5:54Speaker 1: going to be happy with what this team does. But
- 5:56Speaker 1: the fact that this team, as of us recording this
- 5:59Speaker 1: they are seventeen nine and six on the season. I'm
- 6:03Speaker 1: not complaining at all about this team. There's a lot
- 6:05Speaker 1: of good stuff that that that's happening here.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they're Listen, they're fourth in the Metro.
- 6:11Speaker 2: I mean, you know, if the if the you know,
- 6:14Speaker 2: playoffs had started today, they would be pretty firmly in it.
- 6:19Speaker 2: You know, they're if they were in the Atlantic Conference,
- 6:23Speaker 2: they'd be tied or in the Atlantic Division, they'd be
- 6:25Speaker 2: tied for second with Boston. So yeah, I mean they're
- 6:28Speaker 2: they're they're pretty firmly in there.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You want to you want to toggle that switch up?
- 6:32Speaker 1: There are those wires a little bit?
- 6:34Speaker 2: Are you getting getting the a little.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Bit a little bit? Yeah? There we go? Good? Good, okay, good, Yeah,
- 6:42Speaker 1: there we go.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know what that is. You're hearing it.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I'm not all right, so.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I interrupt you, buddy, I know you were talking about
- 6:51Speaker 1: just No.
- 6:51Speaker 2: That's fine. I want you to be able to hear
- 6:54Speaker 2: everything that's going on too. Yeah. But yeah, no, a
- 6:57Speaker 2: lot of pleasant surprises. Uh. So far with this team,
- 7:01Speaker 2: Zegris has kind of found himself after a couple down
- 7:05Speaker 2: years in Anaheim, basically producing at a point per game
- 7:09Speaker 2: pace right now, same thing with Connectney. After a slow
- 7:12Speaker 2: start of the season, he's come on, you know, really
- 7:15Speaker 2: well kind of getting to where I think we Travis
- 7:20Speaker 2: Connectney to be, uh, you know, year after year. Christian
- 7:24Speaker 2: Dvorak is a guy that I kind of just you know,
- 7:26Speaker 2: okay whatever when they signed him. You know, he's playing
- 7:30Speaker 2: at a pretty pretty high clip. Tipp It's been been
- 7:33Speaker 2: good this year. I mean, and then Vlodar has just
- 7:36Speaker 2: been I mean, he's really kind of nobody has taken
- 7:39Speaker 2: over that that goalie battle.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I mean, nobody, nobody.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Thought it was going to be Arson and and he
- 7:45Speaker 2: has really just said this is my job. I mean,
- 7:49Speaker 2: it's it's I think it's pretty clear at this point.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yeah. I think the fact that we're seeing more production
- 7:56Speaker 1: from the power play as well this year. I mean
- 7:59Speaker 1: it's it's not like fantastic by any stretch, but.
- 8:02Speaker 2: It And the thing isn't it is, but like they've
- 8:06Speaker 2: fallen off a little bit, like they were over three tonight.
- 8:10Speaker 2: They've been like I don't think the past ten games
- 8:13Speaker 2: they've run into a little bit of issue because I
- 8:15Speaker 2: remember we talked about them a few weeks ago and
- 8:17Speaker 2: it was like, oh man, their special teams are great,
- 8:20Speaker 2: and the power play is kind of not been where
- 8:23Speaker 2: we were hoping it would be. Penalty kill. I'm trying
- 8:27Speaker 2: to get those numbers up right now. Penalty kills about
- 8:30Speaker 2: middle of the pack. It's like fourteenth, which is perfectly fine.
- 8:33Speaker 2: So they just got to get the power play back
- 8:36Speaker 2: up and run into where it needs to be. But
- 8:39Speaker 2: you know that they're still kind of figuring that out
- 8:41Speaker 2: at this point in time. But yeah, I mean there's
- 8:43Speaker 2: been compared to previous years, which I know is a
- 8:47Speaker 2: pretty low bar to clear, but it's been. It's an
- 8:50Speaker 2: easier team to watch, too, and I think that's a
- 8:52Speaker 2: big thing.
- 8:53Speaker 1: And I think we've also seen too and I don't
- 8:57Speaker 1: think people should just like kind of schluff this aside.
- 9:00Speaker 1: We have seen this team engineer some late comebacks, which
- 9:07Speaker 1: is promising in a way. I mean, they're they they
- 9:10Speaker 1: had a late comeback but lost in a shootout for
- 9:12Speaker 1: the second straight night against the Hurricanes recently, But the
- 9:17Speaker 1: fact that they were able to come back late in
- 9:19Speaker 1: the game meant that the fire was still there. They
- 9:22Speaker 1: had a spark, and I think that's an important aspect
- 9:25Speaker 1: of how this team is going to grow. That they're
- 9:28Speaker 1: just not going to say, okay, third periods here, let's
- 9:31Speaker 1: just let's just go home, you know, let's just let's
- 9:33Speaker 1: just get out of here. They're fighting, and I think
- 9:37Speaker 1: that is what has been fun watching this team. They're fighters,
- 9:41Speaker 1: and as a group, they're coming together. Here for Rick Tockett,
- 9:44Speaker 1: you know, at the end of the day, I think, well,
- 9:46Speaker 1: whether it's for him or whether it's just for each
- 9:48Speaker 1: other as the team. And I don't mean to sound
- 9:50Speaker 1: so hokey, but the fact that they're able to engineer
- 9:53Speaker 1: these these late comebacks and continue fighting throughout the games,
- 9:57Speaker 1: well into the third period, I think there's something to
- 9:59Speaker 1: be said for that.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I mean, even tonight's game. You know, Montreal gets on
- 10:04Speaker 2: the board first, you know, basically I think like, you know,
- 10:09Speaker 2: pretty much towards the end of the first period, I believe.
- 10:11Speaker 2: But they got up one nothing, and you know, in
- 10:15Speaker 2: past years, the Flyers would kind of get tense or
- 10:17Speaker 2: maybe turtle up a little bit and things would snowball,
- 10:20Speaker 2: and you know, all of a sudden, they're down, you know,
- 10:22Speaker 2: five nothing. But that was the only game only goal
- 10:26Speaker 2: of the game from Montreal, and Flyers came back and
- 10:28Speaker 2: scored the next four. So it's it's it's not just
- 10:31Speaker 2: the play and the skill on the icy, it's the
- 10:34Speaker 2: mentality of you know, Okay, we took one on the chin,
- 10:37Speaker 2: We're gonna come right back, you know so, and and
- 10:40Speaker 2: that's what they did in this game. They scored a
- 10:43Speaker 2: goal like thirty nine seconds later to tie it up.
- 10:46Speaker 2: So that is a I think, a different characteristic of
- 10:49Speaker 2: this year's team than I think of what we've seen
- 10:52Speaker 2: in the previous few years.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, it's it's it's fun watching this team. We're
- 10:55Speaker 1: gonna keep watching them, talking about them here on the
- 10:58Speaker 1: PST podcast show for sure. Let us know what you're
- 11:01Speaker 1: thinking about this Flyers team. Love to hear from your
- 11:03Speaker 1: Philadelphia sports table at gmail dot com. Love to read
- 11:05Speaker 1: your email here on the show and respond to it.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Why don't we move on to the Philadelphia Union here?
- 11:12Speaker 1: Pretty damn good regular season, right, first place? Yeah, first place?
- 11:16Speaker 2: A lot to be happy about, a lot to.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Be happy about. Yes, we were disappointed in the outcome
- 11:21Speaker 1: of the postseason when they were not able to get
- 11:25Speaker 1: by NYCFC. It was extremely disappointing game. But I think
- 11:31Speaker 1: what's more disappointing than that is the news that came
- 11:35Speaker 1: out this week two specific individuals on this team are
- 11:39Speaker 1: being shipped out of town. They are being shipped out
- 11:41Speaker 1: of town. The first being I cannot believe I'm actually
- 11:45Speaker 1: going to say this. The Athletic actually reported that DC
- 11:50Speaker 1: United has offered the Union a four million dollar transfer
- 11:53Speaker 1: fee to sign tyber Ebo and give him a designated
- 11:58Speaker 1: player contract. This is a huge offer, you know, even
- 12:02Speaker 1: for a player who scored thirty five goals over the
- 12:05Speaker 1: last year and a half for the Union. And the
- 12:08Speaker 1: Union did take Bribo's contract option for twenty twenty six,
- 12:13Speaker 1: they were hedging, I guess for a little while on
- 12:16Speaker 1: giving him that designated player deal, especially with two strikers
- 12:21Speaker 1: that they already have at that level. However, Tyberribo was
- 12:25Speaker 1: a big reason why this Union team was so successful
- 12:30Speaker 1: this season, and we saw a lot of growth, especially
- 12:33Speaker 1: in Bradley Carnell's first season. Man, when I heard this news,
- 12:37Speaker 1: and I don't know if it's one hundred percent at
- 12:39Speaker 1: this point that he's definitely going to be in DC United,
- 12:42Speaker 1: but it seems like he is. I'm like, I'm like
- 12:45Speaker 1: really upset about this because of where this team went
- 12:48Speaker 1: this year, specifically because doing part I should say, because
- 12:53Speaker 1: of Tyberrebo.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he he was their leading scorer. He
- 12:59Speaker 2: was obviously a huge focal point of their offense, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 2: and they did bring another striker on to go at Bruno.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Damiani is in ezekiel Alde, so we'll have to see
- 13:14Speaker 2: what he brings to the table. A guy from Ghana
- 13:16Speaker 2: that you know, hopefully can you know, you know, kind
- 13:19Speaker 2: of pick up some of the slack there. But you know,
- 13:22Speaker 2: it's just it's scary I think to you know, to
- 13:26Speaker 2: especially if you're a fan of the team that's maybe
- 13:29Speaker 2: kind of newish and maybe doesn't you know understand, like,
- 13:32Speaker 2: you know, okay, everybody knows the guys in the English
- 13:35Speaker 2: Premier League, you know, and some of the big teams
- 13:37Speaker 2: in La Liga or the Bundesliga. But you know, okay,
- 13:40Speaker 2: a guy you know from that's playing in Norway, or
- 13:43Speaker 2: a guy's that's playing you know, in Africa or some
- 13:46Speaker 2: one of these other sides that you know, isn't a
- 13:48Speaker 2: glamour club. When they come over, you're like, okay, well
- 13:51Speaker 2: who's this dude? This isn't the guy that I know
- 13:53Speaker 2: that just scored eighteen goals last year. That part of
- 13:56Speaker 2: it is is super scary. So you know, I get
- 14:00Speaker 2: any kind of trepidation with the fan base, you know,
- 14:04Speaker 2: for for giving up Rio. I believe it's gonna be
- 14:06Speaker 2: four million dollars that they're getting from from DC United
- 14:10Speaker 2: for him. But you know, it's like okay, you know,
- 14:14Speaker 2: is where's that money gonna go? Yeah, it's it's hard
- 14:17Speaker 2: for me because I remember last offseason. I remember everybody
- 14:21Speaker 2: left pretty much and it was just like Jesus Christ,
- 14:25Speaker 2: there's nobody left. Yes, team's gonna finish dead last and
- 14:28Speaker 2: look what they did, so right, it's kind of.
- 14:31Speaker 1: So should we be concerned? Like should we be as
- 14:33Speaker 1: concerned because we're gonna get to the other We're gonna
- 14:35Speaker 1: get to the other A guy who's leaving it a
- 14:37Speaker 1: little bit here. But I guess the overall picture here
- 14:40Speaker 1: is this was one hell of a season that was
- 14:42Speaker 1: unexpected and because of that, wouldn't you want to keep
- 14:47Speaker 1: a lot of the key core elements of this group
- 14:49Speaker 1: together if you want to try to make another run
- 14:52Speaker 1: and try to have another successful season in twenty twenty six.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Like I I'm kind of my mind is boggled over this.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I would, I would think so, and I I
- 15:01Speaker 2: have I get I don't know the way I want
- 15:02Speaker 2: to put it. I mean, I don't came wrong. I
- 15:04Speaker 2: have concern, yeah, but at the same time, you know,
- 15:07Speaker 2: I bitch and moaned about how the sky was falling
- 15:09Speaker 2: last year and it didn't and it went completely opposite direction,
- 15:14Speaker 2: and it kind of made me sit back and go, well,
- 15:16Speaker 2: I mean, I don't really know these guys as well
- 15:19Speaker 2: as like a hardcore soccer fan does, So maybe maybe
- 15:23Speaker 2: I don't know what I'm talking about, and maybe I
- 15:25Speaker 2: should just you know, Yes, I'm scared. Yes I'm panicking
- 15:28Speaker 2: because these name guys that I know are leaving, But
- 15:31Speaker 2: maybe I ought to reserve judgment a little bit because
- 15:34Speaker 2: I don't know who they're bringing in yet, and you know,
- 15:36Speaker 2: they're probably not done with transactions yet. I'm sure, yeah,
- 15:40Speaker 2: you know, but who knows who'll bring in? Will I
- 15:43Speaker 2: know who these guys are? Chances are you know, you
- 15:45Speaker 2: know he's not going to be a guy that a
- 15:48Speaker 2: casual soccer fan is going to know about. But you know,
- 15:50Speaker 2: whoever comes in here. But you know, you have to, okay,
- 15:54Speaker 2: based off of what happened last year, maybe you give
- 15:57Speaker 2: them a little bit more leeway than you'd normally think
- 15:59Speaker 2: just because you know, they showed it last year too.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Yeah, do we give them a leak?
- 16:04Speaker 2: It's hard.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I guess it is because, well, because the one gentleman
- 16:09Speaker 1: on this team who was the MLS Defender of the
- 16:11Speaker 1: Year back in twenty twenty two and was a key
- 16:15Speaker 1: element of this team's success this year, Jacob Glessnes I
- 16:20Speaker 1: mean reported going to LA is gonna be going to
- 16:23Speaker 1: the LA Galaxy along with Jamir Johnson in his MLS rights,
- 16:29Speaker 1: in a deal that really came as a bit of
- 16:31Speaker 1: a surprise, especially with Johnson. And yes, they're gonna be
- 16:35Speaker 1: bringing in as much as two point two million dollars
- 16:38Speaker 1: in general allocation money, per our friends over at Philadelphia
- 16:42Speaker 1: soccernow dot com. The article that they put up. But
- 16:45Speaker 1: my gosh, you're losing tyber Ebo, You're losing Jacob. I mean,
- 16:50Speaker 1: this is this isn't good when this is not good
- 16:54Speaker 1: by Strench.
- 16:56Speaker 2: You know, And it's this one kind of stings a
- 17:00Speaker 2: little bit more because because Glessness was here a little
- 17:02Speaker 2: bit longer. He was here for six years. Yeah, I mean,
- 17:05Speaker 2: he's a guy that you know, we're very familiar with
- 17:07Speaker 2: as as fans of the union. And when you think
- 17:11Speaker 2: about the union, and you think about what makes them successful.
- 17:15Speaker 2: You think about, you know, not so much a high
- 17:18Speaker 2: charge offense, but you think about a solid back end.
- 17:22Speaker 2: You think about Andre Blake and then that and you
- 17:25Speaker 2: think about that defensive wall with Kyle Wagner and with
- 17:28Speaker 2: Jacob Blessess, both of whom were in the MLS Best
- 17:33Speaker 2: eleven for twenty twenty five. So that's that's two of
- 17:36Speaker 2: your defenders made up that that basically all league team
- 17:41Speaker 2: this past year, and now one of them is gone.
- 17:44Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, well, and I had the
- 17:47Speaker 2: thought of well, I remember last year they signed that
- 17:49Speaker 2: kid Glovinovich from Argentina. Oh Argentina, big soccer country. Maybe
- 17:54Speaker 2: that's a big deal, but that was a that was
- 17:55Speaker 2: a one year deal. He is now back in Argentina.
- 17:58Speaker 2: So I when my when I first heard that Lessness
- 18:01Speaker 2: was gone, the first thing that popped in my head was, Oh,
- 18:04Speaker 2: they're going to have Glivenwish to plug in there, and
- 18:06Speaker 2: that's not the case. He's back in Argentina. So now
- 18:09Speaker 2: we got to find out, Okay, what is the planet
- 18:12Speaker 2: center back there? Yeah, to replace you know, an all
- 18:16Speaker 2: league center back. I mean seems like it's a major hole,
- 18:20Speaker 2: big big hole to phil So I wonder to see
- 18:24Speaker 2: how they're going to do this. I'm going to be
- 18:25Speaker 2: very anxoused to see what they do.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to keep tabs on it, of course.
- 18:29Speaker 1: And if you're a Union fan, let us know what
- 18:31Speaker 1: you're thinking. Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com. We'd
- 18:34Speaker 1: love to hear from you about you know, the direction
- 18:37Speaker 1: you think that this Union team is going to be
- 18:40Speaker 1: going in here in twenty twenty six with these transactions
- 18:43Speaker 1: that we just learned about this week. So that being said,
- 18:46Speaker 1: we are going to take a break. And beforehand, if

- 19:19Speaker 1: as well. So we're gonna take a break and when
- 19:21Speaker 1: we come back We're gonna dive into a ton of
- 19:22Speaker 1: football talk, college football, NFL. Stick with us, all right,
- 19:27Speaker 1: we are back and Len, what do we get into
- 19:30Speaker 1: some college football talk here? Because this is something I've
- 19:33Speaker 1: been wanting to talk about for the past couple of weeks.
- 19:36Speaker 1: We're not really going to be talking about it with Eric,
- 19:38Speaker 1: He's not that much of a college football guy.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:42Speaker 1: So, I just I've been thinking about how much college
- 19:46Speaker 1: football has changed one since the nil one or two,
- 19:50Speaker 1: I should say since the transfer portal. And I think
- 19:53Speaker 1: a lot of us thought that we knew that the
- 19:58Speaker 1: game was going to change in various ways. I actually
- 20:00Speaker 1: am surprised at how I think it has created a
- 20:03Speaker 1: more competitive atmosphere and environment football program to football program
- 20:08Speaker 1: because of those two things. But what really has surprised
- 20:12Speaker 1: me is the way that whether it's college football coaches
- 20:16Speaker 1: or certain programs in this day and age, have really
- 20:19Speaker 1: acted in terms of just this entitledness in a way.
- 20:24Speaker 1: And what I'm talking about two specific storylines, One the
- 20:29Speaker 1: Lane Kiffens situation with Old Miss and LSU, where Lane
- 20:34Speaker 1: Kiffen essentially said to his team and to the university
- 20:39Speaker 1: that he was aligned with and that brought him in
- 20:42Speaker 1: he essentially said, fuck you, I'm going to Louisiana right
- 20:46Speaker 1: now and buy everybody, you know, take care of yourselves,
- 20:50Speaker 1: you know, you know, good luck, good luck in the
- 20:51Speaker 1: bowl game. And then fast forward to this past week
- 20:55Speaker 1: where Notre Dame decided, after not getting in the college
- 20:59Speaker 1: football playoff off, that they were going to remove themselves
- 21:02Speaker 1: from consideration or bowl consideration, I should say, after not
- 21:07Speaker 1: getting that spot in the college football playoff. And I'm like,
- 21:11Speaker 1: I don't know what your thoughts were with regard to
- 21:14Speaker 1: the lank Kiffen's situation. With regard to Notre Dame. I
- 21:18Speaker 1: just think there's this like entitlement thing that's stronger today
- 21:22Speaker 1: than it's ever been in college football. Whether it's from
- 21:25Speaker 1: a player standpoint, but it's just it never ceases to amazing.
- 21:29Speaker 1: And we've all known that Lane Kiffen not the greatest
- 21:33Speaker 1: individual in the world when it comes to his his
- 21:37Speaker 1: his you know, how he handles situations with various institutions
- 21:42Speaker 1: that have hired him. It doesn't actually surprise me with him,
- 21:46Speaker 1: a little surprised with Notre Dame that there are being
- 21:48Speaker 1: such babies about this. Oh we didn't get we didn't
- 21:51Speaker 1: get the college football plaoff, we're going to remove ourselves
- 21:53Speaker 1: from bowl contention, Like, are you freaking kidding me? With
- 21:56Speaker 1: these players on the team that are like in their
- 21:59Speaker 1: sea your year and stuff like, are you kidding? I
- 22:02Speaker 1: don't know what are your thoughts on some of these
- 22:04Speaker 1: storylines here.
- 22:05Speaker 2: So all right, let's start with with Lane Kiffin, because
- 22:08Speaker 2: I'm going to correct you on one thing. With Lane Kiffin,
- 22:10Speaker 2: he didn't say screw you guys, I'm out of here.
- 22:13Speaker 2: He What he did say was, Hey, I'm taking the
- 22:16Speaker 2: LSU job, but hey, I'd still love to coach you
- 22:18Speaker 2: guys through the playoffs. And old miss rightfully said, no,
- 22:22Speaker 2: go piss up a rope. You're not gonna let you
- 22:24Speaker 2: as the LSU, as the acting LSU head coach coach
- 22:28Speaker 2: our team and our players who you could get in
- 22:30Speaker 2: their ear and you know, potentially poach during this playoff run. Yeah, no,
- 22:34Speaker 2: we're not gonna let you do that. You were not
- 22:35Speaker 2: going to let you have your cake with this big
- 22:38Speaker 2: new contract and eat it too and get to have
- 22:40Speaker 2: a playoff run. Now you wanted out, You're out. You
- 22:44Speaker 2: got your wish, goodbye, see you later. I had kind
- 22:47Speaker 2: of hoped that with Lane Kiffen. You know, he's always
- 22:53Speaker 2: kind of been this like offensive, you know, wonder kin
- 22:57Speaker 2: type of thing, but maybe not so mature, you know,
- 23:00Speaker 2: left some situations on some bad terms in the past.
- 23:04Speaker 2: But I thought maybe when this whole thing was going down,
- 23:06Speaker 2: it's like maybe he'll finally have maybe have grown up
- 23:09Speaker 2: a little bit and realize, hey, I'm already in the
- 23:13Speaker 2: goddamn SEC I'm already I already have a team in
- 23:17Speaker 2: the top ten in the nation. You know, basically they
- 23:21Speaker 2: are the you know, the the big deal in the
- 23:23Speaker 2: state right now. It's a huge deal. I'm making huge money.
- 23:28Speaker 2: We're going to continue to make money because this as
- 23:31Speaker 2: long as I'm here, this program is going to continue
- 23:33Speaker 2: to be good. He never had to leave. But he's
- 23:37Speaker 2: still that same person. Like like if you've ever seen
- 23:40Speaker 2: somebody that's just materialistic and has always like got to
- 23:43Speaker 2: get Oh, I got to get the newest thing. I
- 23:46Speaker 2: got to I gotta have the flashiest thing. And that
- 23:48Speaker 2: person that's who Lane Kiffin stills ooh. Instead of being
- 23:52Speaker 2: at you know, Mississippi, I can be at LSU or
- 23:55Speaker 2: or a replace like that. He's always going to be
- 23:59Speaker 2: a climber. He's always going to be somebody that's looking
- 24:02Speaker 2: for the next thing instead of being like.
- 24:03Speaker 1: It's a good point.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Now I'm gonna I'm gonna build something here, and I'm
- 24:06Speaker 2: going to be I could have been the Bear Bryant
- 24:10Speaker 2: of Mississippi, you know, as I built this program up.
- 24:13Speaker 2: But instead I'm just going to be the next coach
- 24:16Speaker 2: here at LSU. That's that's the decision he made. And look,
- 24:20Speaker 2: he's gonna get paid a ship ton of money for it,
- 24:23Speaker 2: so I guess that's what matters. But man, I don't know. Man,
- 24:26Speaker 2: there's something to be said for building a legacy, yes,
- 24:29Speaker 2: and he really had a chance to do it. He
- 24:30Speaker 2: doesn't care about that. He just he does not care
- 24:33Speaker 2: about that. So those are my thoughts on Lane Kiffin,
- 24:39Speaker 2: Notre Dame. I mean, I'm not surprised because Notre Dame
- 24:42Speaker 2: has always had a super high opinion of themselves. It's
- 24:46Speaker 2: why they do the whole high and mighty bullshit with
- 24:49Speaker 2: I'm never going to join a conference, mainly because they
- 24:51Speaker 2: don't want to split the money with other conference members,
- 24:53Speaker 2: but also because they think they're above all that. It's
- 24:58Speaker 2: so I'm not surprised by But to me, the bigger
- 25:01Speaker 2: issue with that is, and if you look a little
- 25:05Speaker 2: bit deeper with the whole college bowl system, these bowls
- 25:11Speaker 2: are in deep, deep, deep trouble because Notre Dame isn't
- 25:16Speaker 2: the only team that's opted out of a bowl so far,
- 25:19Speaker 2: a few teams have and so you know that's going
- 25:24Speaker 2: to happen more and more, and kids who are NFL
- 25:26Speaker 2: prospects are going to opt out. And so you know,
- 25:30Speaker 2: a bunch of Penn States players have already opted out
- 25:32Speaker 2: of the pin Stripe Bowl. Yeah. So yeah, Penn State's
- 25:36Speaker 2: going to be in the bowl, but it's going to
- 25:38Speaker 2: be their second and third string guys, you know, up
- 25:40Speaker 2: against Clemson, and a lot of Clemsons guys are going
- 25:42Speaker 2: to drop out, I'm sure as well. And I just
- 25:46Speaker 2: wonder what this whole bowl system that isn't in the
- 25:49Speaker 2: playoff is going to look like ten years from now.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Are they even going to be these bulls? Because this
- 25:54Speaker 2: to me feels like the first ball season you know
- 25:58Speaker 2: where not only NFL prospects but entire football programs that
- 26:03Speaker 2: programs have been like, eh, I don't care. I mean,
- 26:06Speaker 2: I'd just rather not go screw it.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I think, yeah, I think the NC Double A is
- 26:12Speaker 1: going to come down on football programs that allow me
- 26:15Speaker 1: to do this, or they're going.
- 26:16Speaker 2: To have to because I think there are some conferences
- 26:18Speaker 2: that have already have already find their teams because these
- 26:23Speaker 2: conferences make money off the balls. So if their team
- 26:25Speaker 2: declients the invitation that goes to somebody else, they just
- 26:28Speaker 2: lost out all money. So yeah, those conferences are going
- 26:31Speaker 2: to find those teams. But we're going to see if
- 26:33Speaker 2: it really you know, I don't know. I feel like
- 26:36Speaker 2: the bowls, the lower level bowls, the Pinstripe Bowl, the
- 26:41Speaker 2: you know, a Looha Bowl, the Liberty Bowl, like these
- 26:45Speaker 2: kind of things that aren't part of the college football
- 26:47Speaker 2: playoff are slowly losing their luster, and you know they're
- 26:52Speaker 2: they're going to like because instinct to me, like if
- 26:55Speaker 2: I was a if so, if I was a college
- 26:57Speaker 2: football player and it's late December, do I want to
- 27:02Speaker 2: go to the pin Stripe Bowl in cold ass New
- 27:05Speaker 2: York City? Right? Do I want to go to a
- 27:07Speaker 2: bowl in the Bahamas or Hawaii? Yeah? Yeah, I'll go
- 27:10Speaker 2: to that. Yeah, let me go somewhere and play somewhere
- 27:12Speaker 2: where it's warm. But do I really want to go
- 27:15Speaker 2: to the you know, the famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise,
- 27:18Speaker 2: Idaho in December. Yeah, no, I'm good. Thanks, So, you know,
- 27:25Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know. I just I think there's
- 27:27Speaker 2: a few of these bowls that quite frankly, aren't going
- 27:30Speaker 2: to survive. And I think they're not going to be
- 27:32Speaker 2: here in ten years. I really do.
- 27:34Speaker 1: That's right. It's a great it's a great college football
- 27:38Speaker 1: theme to just like keep our eyes on, to keep
- 27:40Speaker 1: in the back of our minds, you know, because I
- 27:42Speaker 1: think at the end of the day, like especially, I
- 27:44Speaker 1: was gonna say, NC Double A is gonna have to
- 27:46Speaker 1: like they're going to have to come down big time on.
- 27:48Speaker 2: These and as that field expands, and it's not just
- 27:51Speaker 2: going to stay at twelve, it's going to go to
- 27:52Speaker 2: at least sixteen at some point, because you know, you
- 27:56Speaker 2: did have Okay, yes, the ACC does have a team
- 27:59Speaker 2: in Miami in it, but they're champion is five lost Duke. Now,
- 28:04Speaker 2: maybe there's a thing in the future where Okay, Miami
- 28:07Speaker 2: gets in, but hey, technically Duke won the ACC so
- 28:11Speaker 2: they get a they get a bid into this into
- 28:14Speaker 2: this tournament. Yeah, maybe once it goes out to sixteen teams,
- 28:17Speaker 2: maybe you'll see something like that. I don't know, or
- 28:20Speaker 2: you know, maybe the SEC and the Big tennel just
- 28:22Speaker 2: gobble up half the you know, all all the all
- 28:24Speaker 2: the other bids as they seem to want to do. Yeah,
- 28:28Speaker 2: but you know, maybe because I know, I know, in
- 28:31Speaker 2: like the early rounds of these they're calling it this
- 28:34Speaker 2: Bowl or that Bowl or whatever. So maybe they incorporate
- 28:37Speaker 2: some of those bowls more into the playoff system. That's
- 28:40Speaker 2: the only way I see that those bulls survive as
- 28:42Speaker 2: first round or second round games in a larger playoff.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Yeah. It's it's man, it's fascinating. It really is if
- 28:49Speaker 1: you follow college football. And as we're moving along here,
- 28:53Speaker 1: the other aspect of the college football season still here
- 28:56Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five as we're recording this, which is
- 28:58Speaker 1: fascinating it's going to lead over into twenty twenty six,
- 29:02Speaker 1: is the college football playoff itself, the twelve team format
- 29:07Speaker 1: and the fact that we really do have some Cinderella stories,
- 29:12Speaker 1: whether it's Indiana, whether it's JMU, Texas Tech. I mean,
- 29:16Speaker 1: the drama also of the conference title races, you know,
- 29:20Speaker 1: the battle between established dynasties like Ohio State and Georgia,
- 29:25Speaker 1: but really the quote new blood teams Len that are
- 29:30Speaker 1: having an impact and the impact of what we talked
- 29:34Speaker 1: about before the transfer portal and just this coaching carousel
- 29:37Speaker 1: as well. It's interesting to see how home field advantages
- 29:43Speaker 1: are going to work out in terms of this playoff
- 29:47Speaker 1: system and what we're going to see. I mean, you
- 29:49Speaker 1: really have narratives I think of the establishment dynasties against
- 29:56Speaker 1: these underdog underdog Cinderella stories, but those Cinderella stories being
- 30:04Speaker 1: very viable. Specifically Indiana, as we know, being the number
- 30:07Speaker 1: one team in the country. Nobody ever expected that. Give
- 30:10Speaker 1: me a fucking break. Yeah, nobody will spend.
- 30:12Speaker 2: That's thing you had the old days where okay, Alabama
- 30:16Speaker 2: and Ohio State and Georgia are going to hoard every
- 30:20Speaker 2: single five prospect that comes in. Guess what, you can
- 30:23Speaker 2: hoard all these prospects, but you can't put them all
- 30:26Speaker 2: on the field at the same time. Yeah, So eventually
- 30:28Speaker 2: those kids are gonna be like, well, I want to play,
- 30:31Speaker 2: and they're going to go somewhere else, and they're going
- 30:32Speaker 2: to trickle down to some of these you know, yeah, Okay,
- 30:35Speaker 2: maybe they go to like a you know, a Texas
- 30:38Speaker 2: Tech or or another you know, decent name school, but
- 30:42Speaker 2: maybe one of them goes to two lane and you know,
- 30:44Speaker 2: you you have you know, these other schools that they're
- 30:48Speaker 2: maybe going to instead, or they're bumping other for prospects
- 30:52Speaker 2: down to like the two lane level and stuff like
- 30:54Speaker 2: that when they move to a different program.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:57Speaker 2: So yeah, there is starting to be a trickle down
- 30:59Speaker 2: thing because of the your mathematics of it all. You
- 31:01Speaker 2: cannot sustain having every single one of these five star
- 31:06Speaker 2: recruits that you promise the world to and then they
- 31:09Speaker 2: can't get on the field. Guess what they're gonna leave. Yeah,
- 31:11Speaker 2: so you know that that's gonna be a byproduct of it.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of talent out there, for sure.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I mean, I'm personally I I genuinely you know, even
- 31:20Speaker 1: though they're they're a big ten rival of Penn State. Like,
- 31:23Speaker 1: I can't wait to see how Indiana performs against the
- 31:26Speaker 1: winner of the Alabama and Oklahoma game. I cannot wait
- 31:31Speaker 1: to see that. I think it's going to be a fascinating,
- 31:33Speaker 1: uh matchup in itself. I think that I think that
- 31:37Speaker 1: that Tulane and and and Ole miss is going to
- 31:41Speaker 1: be a great matchup too. And then whoever is going
- 31:43Speaker 1: to face Georgia, you know, after after that game. I mean,
- 31:47Speaker 1: that's those are the games that I cannot wait to see.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I'm really looking forward to it.
- 31:53Speaker 2: I'm interested to see All Miss after kiff and leaves.
- 31:56Speaker 2: What that doesn't the team, how they respond? And I
- 31:59Speaker 2: don't know. I mean, Julane's coach, I believe went to Florida. Yes,
- 32:04Speaker 2: I don't know if he's coaching them through this whole
- 32:06Speaker 2: college football playoff or not. I don't know if he's
- 32:08Speaker 2: going to be there through that playoff or not, but
- 32:11Speaker 2: you know, if you know, if he's there, I mean,
- 32:14Speaker 2: do they knock off Full Miss. I think Georgia beats
- 32:16Speaker 2: whoever comes out of that, and I think Georgia is
- 32:20Speaker 2: I have a I I just because I have my
- 32:22Speaker 2: own doomsday feeling whenever I see a team that I
- 32:25Speaker 2: truly don't like in there. I E. Ohio State. I
- 32:28Speaker 2: think if Georgia doesn't beat Ohio State, I think they
- 32:30Speaker 2: end up winning the whole thing, that being Ohio State,
- 32:33Speaker 2: just because I don't want them to. So yeah, that's
- 32:38Speaker 2: kind of my feeling on that. But yeah, we'll have
- 32:41Speaker 2: to see how it goes. I just you know, I
- 32:43Speaker 2: just want to see some good matchups. I just want
- 32:45Speaker 2: to see some good games, you know, and you know,
- 32:48Speaker 2: hopefully it's a it's a fun ball seat or not ballsy,
- 32:52Speaker 2: but playoff season and uh, and you know, we'll see
- 32:54Speaker 2: what happens from there.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Absolutely. And look as we're moving along here, lenn and
- 32:59Speaker 1: I guess to finish up our discussion kind of quick here,
- 33:04Speaker 1: it's it's gonna be really interesting to see what happens
- 33:06Speaker 1: with the NFL playoff picture as that becomes more clear.
- 33:09Speaker 1: We're gonna be saying goodbye to certain teams in one
- 33:14Speaker 1: in particular. And it's so many people, so many NFL
- 33:18Speaker 1: fans in general, feel good about saying bye the Kansas
- 33:21Speaker 1: City Chiefs this season.
- 33:23Speaker 2: You know, is it goodbye or.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Who knows? I mean, this is the this is looking
- 33:31Speaker 1: like the end of what was a dominant decade for
- 33:35Speaker 1: this for this freaking team in a lot of different ways,
- 33:39Speaker 1: you know, a number of Super Bowls. But yeah, the
- 33:42Speaker 1: Kansas City Chiefs not heading to the playoffs. You got
- 33:46Speaker 1: the Cincinnati Bengals, who a lot of us thought would
- 33:48Speaker 1: possibly be heading to the playoffs, but with Joe Burrow's
- 33:51Speaker 1: injury throughout the season, that didn't happen. Minnesota Vikings, they
- 33:55Speaker 1: got a chance to see what JJ McCarthy was about,
- 33:58Speaker 1: even though he was injured at certain points out the season.
- 34:01Speaker 1: You know, those are two teams that are out of
- 34:03Speaker 1: the picture as well, And there's some there's some surprises,
- 34:07Speaker 1: the fact that you know, the Ravens have struggled throughout
- 34:10Speaker 1: the course of the season, Lamar Jackson with injuries. It
- 34:13Speaker 1: seems there's a lot of parody in the NFL this year,
- 34:16Speaker 1: and I'm glad to see the playoff picture where it's
- 34:20Speaker 1: at right now. But I'm also glad that like we're
- 34:22Speaker 1: actually not going to see certain teams and that there
- 34:25Speaker 1: there there are teams like the Chargers, And yes, I
- 34:27Speaker 1: know the Chargers recently beat the Eagles, but and I
- 34:30Speaker 1: and I hate Harbaugh with every ounce of my being,
- 34:34Speaker 1: but you know, I love to see Justin Herbert being
- 34:37Speaker 1: successful and that team in that franchise that hasn't had
- 34:40Speaker 1: a lot to look forward to. There are certain teams
- 34:42Speaker 1: that I'm gonna be really interested in seeing where they
- 34:44Speaker 1: go come the end of this season. But some of
- 34:47Speaker 1: these teams, I'm kind of glad they're not heading to
- 34:49Speaker 1: the playoffs.
- 34:52Speaker 2: I mean, it's always fun to see different teams in Okay,
- 34:54Speaker 2: the Broncos are back. Yeah, the Chargers, that'll be good
- 34:57Speaker 2: to see them in it. Not really thrilled to see
- 35:00Speaker 2: the Patriots back, but here they are, you know. And
- 35:04Speaker 2: then the Jags. I mean, that whole AFC South is
- 35:07Speaker 2: pretty interesting. The Cults are still hanging on there, but
- 35:10Speaker 2: I don't, you know, we'll see what they end up doing.
- 35:13Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean there's some interesting teams. I mean,
- 35:16Speaker 2: the Bears, I mean I didn't really have them at
- 35:18Speaker 2: the beginning of the season, you know, doing anything. But
- 35:21Speaker 2: and then you have a couple of divisions in like
- 35:23Speaker 2: the NFC South and the AFC North where it's like, okay,
- 35:27Speaker 2: anybody wanted to win this division or what was happening here?
- 35:31Speaker 2: So yeah, the Rams are killing it, the Seahawks, I mean,
- 35:35Speaker 2: you've got three teams out in the West, NFC Wester
- 35:39Speaker 2: are doing great. So yeah, I think there's some interesting
- 35:42Speaker 2: matchups to be had here. And yeah, definitely kind of
- 35:47Speaker 2: a changing of the guarden a little bit. It'll be
- 35:49Speaker 2: fascinating to see what the Chiefs do in the offseason.
- 35:53Speaker 2: If Kelsey does retire, then you gotta you know, you
- 35:55Speaker 2: gotta fill the tight end position. You have to figure out, Okay,
- 35:59Speaker 2: how long he's my home going to be out? You
- 36:01Speaker 2: know with that injury, you know, how do you kind
- 36:03Speaker 2: of rebuild or is it done? I mean, I can't
- 36:08Speaker 2: believe that that, you know, a team with Reid and
- 36:11Speaker 2: Mahomes is ever going to be done until I see
- 36:13Speaker 2: it for a couple of years in a row. But
- 36:15Speaker 2: you know, at the same time, there's a lot of
- 36:17Speaker 2: holes to be filled there, so we'll have to see
- 36:19Speaker 2: how they how they manage to do that.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Absolutely, and with our Philadelphia Eagles too, we weren't necessarily
- 36:25Speaker 1: going to get into it. And I'm going to be
- 36:27Speaker 1: diving into the Eagles a lot more with a J.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Spivey is going to be coming on in just a
- 36:30Speaker 1: bit here. The Philadelphia Eagles are not in a terrible position,
- 36:35Speaker 1: and I really know not at all. They're not. And
- 36:37Speaker 1: I really believe this awful pessimistic narrative that we get
- 36:40Speaker 1: from Philly sports talk radio where shit is just being
- 36:43Speaker 1: made up, and we've seen it a lot throughout this year.
- 36:45Speaker 1: I've heard it a lot throughout this year is just
- 36:49Speaker 1: is just nonsense. And the fact that this team is
- 36:51Speaker 1: nine to five despite that dog shit nonsense that we
- 36:55Speaker 1: have heard from Philly sports talk radio. I think is
- 36:59Speaker 1: pretty remarkable given the challenges that this team has had
- 37:02Speaker 1: from an offensive line perspective to to like what the
- 37:08Speaker 1: defense has done and grown into as well. I'm going
- 37:11Speaker 1: to be talking oj about how this team has grown
- 37:12Speaker 1: in various ways because they have. You know, it's not
- 37:16Speaker 1: Doom and Gloom twenty twenty three where everything fell off
- 37:20Speaker 1: a cliff. We just saw this past week when a
- 37:22Speaker 1: defense and a team is able to hold another NFL
- 37:25Speaker 1: team to seventy two net yards. I don't care. There's
- 37:29Speaker 1: professional football players playing on both sides of the ball.
- 37:32Speaker 1: There's something to be said for that. I think this
- 37:34Speaker 1: Eagles team, if they're able to win two of their
- 37:37Speaker 1: next three games here, Lynn, I really believe that they're
- 37:41Speaker 1: going to be a team to be reckoned with in
- 37:42Speaker 1: the postseason. That's just my thoughts here, and yeah, maybe homeristic,
- 37:46Speaker 1: but it's my thoughts.
- 37:47Speaker 2: I mean, you are, it's it's your nature. Yes, I
- 37:50Speaker 2: mean I'm kind of in between obviously. You know, I
- 37:54Speaker 2: don't subscribe to the WIP Doom and Gloom. Yeah, I
- 37:57Speaker 2: don't think anybody should ever listen to that radio, But
- 38:00Speaker 2: you know there's you know, it's low IQ radio for
- 38:04Speaker 2: low IQ people. No offense, but you know, but at
- 38:10Speaker 2: the same time, there were offensive struggles. And yeah, the
- 38:13Speaker 2: defense is great, don't get me wrong, but you know,
- 38:15Speaker 2: the eyes don't lie. And and yes, they had a really
- 38:18Speaker 2: great get right game against a bad Las Vegas team,
- 38:22Speaker 2: and yes they are professionals, but you know, that was
- 38:25Speaker 2: what we had expected them to do it, so we'd
- 38:27Speaker 2: hope they would do it. If they didn't do that,
- 38:29Speaker 2: then there was real reason for panics. Yeah, in my mind.
- 38:32Speaker 2: But yeah, the previous few weeks were the previous few weeks.
- 38:36Speaker 2: There's no getting around that. I mean, there's no there's
- 38:38Speaker 2: no sugarcoating how bad the offense was in a lot
- 38:43Speaker 2: of those games. Yeah, so I don't feel that they're
- 38:46Speaker 2: fully out of the woods yet. Yeah, I do expect
- 38:48Speaker 2: them to beat Washington twice with no Jaden Daniels. They're
- 38:53Speaker 2: really the game to me that matters is the Bills game.
- 38:55Speaker 2: How do you look against the team that's genuinely good,
- 39:00Speaker 2: Because if they stomp the Raiders and stomp to command
- 39:05Speaker 2: the three and ten or three and eleven whatever they are,
- 39:07Speaker 2: four and ten, sorry, the four and ten commanders twice
- 39:10Speaker 2: and then get get stomped by the Bills, who are
- 39:13Speaker 2: at an actual good team, then my feeling going into
- 39:16Speaker 2: the playoffs isn't as good because then it's like, Okay,
- 39:19Speaker 2: when you step up in competition, then you can't hang.
- 39:23Speaker 2: You can only beat those bad teams. So that Bills game,
- 39:27Speaker 2: to me, is going to be key, just because I
- 39:30Speaker 2: want to see what they do. You know, have they
- 39:32Speaker 2: grown offensively? What can they do against a legitimate opponent
- 39:36Speaker 2: in Buffalo?
- 39:37Speaker 1: Yep? Real quick. I talked about it with Matt Rodgers
- 39:39Speaker 1: on our postgame podcast show this past week. The simplest
- 39:43Speaker 1: thing was nice to see, not having Tyler Steen slapping
- 39:48Speaker 1: Cam Jurgens every single play to snap the ball, notifying
- 39:53Speaker 1: the defense when the ball was going to be snapped
- 39:55Speaker 1: every single time they got away. It happened a few times,
- 39:58Speaker 1: but my gosh, they got away from it. Talk about
- 40:02Speaker 1: offensive management and alteration that needed to happen, something that simple.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I was so happy to see that.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Hey, yeah, and it feels like that should be a
- 40:12Speaker 2: basic thing. I know, took a few weeks. Took a
- 40:17Speaker 2: few weeks.
- 40:17Speaker 1: It did, all right, buddy, I'm gonna let you head
- 40:19Speaker 1: out of here and we're gonna talk to O. J.
- 40:22Speaker 1: Spivey from the Philadelphia Tribune. Do you have any final
- 40:25Speaker 1: thoughts before I head out of here?
- 40:28Speaker 2: I don't Happy holidays to everybody. I'm not sure if
- 40:31Speaker 2: I'm gonna be on the show next week or what
- 40:33Speaker 2: the schedule is. I don't know either or what we're
- 40:37Speaker 2: even gonna be doing because it is coming up on Christmas.
- 40:41Speaker 2: We'll have to see how that goes. But if I
- 40:42Speaker 2: don't see you all, have a very happy holidays.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Yes, happy holidays to everybody, and again stick around. We're
- 40:48Speaker 1: gonna go to break here. We've got more Eagles talk
- 40:51Speaker 1: coming your way and now on the teable, all right,
- 40:58Speaker 1: and joining us now to I've into this Philadelphia Eagles
- 41:02Speaker 1: team after a dominant win against the loss. I almost
- 41:06Speaker 1: called them the Oakland Raiders, dear Lord, the Las Vegas Raiders.
- 41:09Speaker 1: We have got one of our favorites here at the
- 41:11Speaker 1: PSD podcast show. It's been a while since we had
- 41:13Speaker 1: him on. Cannot let this amount of time go by again.
- 41:16Speaker 1: He is from the Philadelphia Tribune. Love following him on
- 41:19Speaker 1: various sites, various social media sites. Great content always, mister O. J. Spivey,
- 41:23Speaker 1: my friend, great to see you, Thanks for jumping on
- 41:26Speaker 1: this week.
- 41:27Speaker 3: Well, thank you, Jeff. It's always a pleasure of being
- 41:29Speaker 3: on with you. Happy Holidays to you, your family, and
- 41:32Speaker 3: also your listeners.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Thank you. Yes, Happy holidays to you too. And we
- 41:36Speaker 1: had a huge early holiday treat this past week again
- 41:39Speaker 1: when the Eagles really kicked the heck out of the
- 41:42Speaker 1: Las Vegas Raiders. It was a needed game. On our
- 41:46Speaker 1: postgame show, our good friend and mutual friend Matt Rodgers
- 41:49Speaker 1: and I were talking about the fact that, you know,
- 41:52Speaker 1: this was I think a confidence boost perhaps for this team.
- 41:57Speaker 1: And you're a beat writer for for the Philadelphia Eagles
- 42:01Speaker 1: at the Tribune, so I'd like to get your perspective on.
- 42:04Speaker 1: You know, we'll talk about what this game ended up meaning.
- 42:06Speaker 1: But as we're really starting out this discussion, I think
- 42:09Speaker 1: context is really important for how we look at this
- 42:11Speaker 1: Eagles team as we're going to be heading into Week sixteen.
- 42:14Speaker 1: And what I mean by that is how this team
- 42:17Speaker 1: has grown, or even how they have not grown in
- 42:20Speaker 1: certain ways because it has been an up and down season.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Some folks just a couple of weeks ago were saying
- 42:26Speaker 1: this team was like the twenty twenty three team, which
- 42:29Speaker 1: I think is kind of ridiculous. It's not. Some said
- 42:32Speaker 1: they're still growing as a group, which I think there's
- 42:34Speaker 1: some validity to that as well. So Ojay, I'm wondering
- 42:37Speaker 1: what are what are your thoughts on that notion that
- 42:40Speaker 1: the team really hasn't grown too much this season or
- 42:43Speaker 1: that they've been rather stagnant. Have you actually seen some
- 42:46Speaker 1: growth in some capacity with this team over the season.
- 42:50Speaker 3: Well, I think the biggest thing with big growth is
- 42:53Speaker 3: that they're together. And you know, I try like everything
- 42:57Speaker 3: to avoid saying the year twenty two three for any reason, because,
- 43:03Speaker 3: like you said, I thought it was a bit silly
- 43:05Speaker 3: and ridiculous to compare the two, but so many fans
- 43:09Speaker 3: and some media have It was at PTSD from twenty
- 43:14Speaker 3: twenty three, and you would think the Super Bowl win
- 43:16Speaker 3: would have overcome that, but apparently not. But I think
- 43:20Speaker 3: the difference is and the growth is other than twenty
- 43:25Speaker 3: twenty three. There wasn't as much closeness in the locker
- 43:29Speaker 3: room as it is now between the veterans between the
- 43:32Speaker 3: young guys, and I think that's where the growth is.
- 43:35Speaker 3: But I think it was going to be a gradual
- 43:37Speaker 3: growth for this year anyway, because the expectations are so high.
- 43:41Speaker 3: Jeff coming off the Super Bowl, and I think to
- 43:46Speaker 3: a degree, everyone's been spoiled by that.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 3: So you know, you talk about the expectations being high,
- 43:54Speaker 3: and you know, I think it's a bit unfair, it's
- 43:57Speaker 3: so to speak, because they've actually done it. And it's
- 44:01Speaker 3: really really hard to repeat, Number one, to get back
- 44:06Speaker 3: to the playoffs as a Super Bowl defending Super Bowl champion,
- 44:10Speaker 3: let alone to try and go back to win it.
- 44:12Speaker 3: It's such a grind. And then the schedule makers did
- 44:16Speaker 3: them no favors as you see, there's no back to
- 44:20Speaker 3: back home games. Uh they you know, there's been talked
- 44:23Speaker 3: this week about the week's being so short.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Yep, so you talk.
- 44:27Speaker 3: About from Monday to Saturday, and you know they've had
- 44:31Speaker 3: that recurring throughout this year without you know, talked about
- 44:36Speaker 3: the no back to back games, and then you know
- 44:38Speaker 3: you have the short weeks.
- 44:40Speaker 2: That's a lot. And the schedule itself was brutal.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Yeah, fourth hard schedule. I think, wasn't it the fourth
- 44:46Speaker 1: hardest schedule in the league?
- 44:47Speaker 3: I believe right going in right exactly, So, I mean
- 44:51Speaker 3: week after week and you know, even some of the
- 44:54Speaker 3: lesser teams, you know, they were coming in you know,
- 44:57Speaker 3: throwing haymakers, throwing their best shot.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Yep.
- 44:59Speaker 3: And you know why, it is a little bit disappointing that,
- 45:04Speaker 3: you know, they've already lost five games. They could still
- 45:07Speaker 3: run the table to rest and still be twelve and five,
- 45:10Speaker 3: which would be phenomenal, which I think is just one
- 45:12Speaker 3: less win than last year, right considering. But it's just
- 45:18Speaker 3: so much that that went on. And I think it's
- 45:21Speaker 3: really big that they were able to stay together with
- 45:24Speaker 3: auto drama, with allto perceived drama.
- 45:27Speaker 1: I think that's a key that's a key phrase, perceived drama.
- 45:30Speaker 1: I really exactly, because we know and look, you know
- 45:34Speaker 1: there are there's a lot of communicate out there on
- 45:36Speaker 1: the socials about what certain radio stations are talking about,
- 45:40Speaker 1: the narratives that they're creating with their listenership, the perceived
- 45:45Speaker 1: and I think it's so important that word perceived theme.
- 45:48Speaker 1: You know, that's going on with this team. And I'm
- 45:52Speaker 1: I'm under the notion that you know, you lose three
- 45:54Speaker 1: games in a row, it doesn't mean you don't grow
- 45:56Speaker 1: as a team. You know, even after the second loss,
- 45:58Speaker 1: there's still I think growth.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Its popular opinion exactly.
- 46:02Speaker 1: I mean, I still think that when you lose, you
- 46:04Speaker 1: can still grow in some capacity. I don't know, I
- 46:07Speaker 1: don't know if you were agreeing with that as well.
- 46:10Speaker 3: No, I mean it's it's it again, like you said,
- 46:13Speaker 3: it's hard to conceive that notion that you can either.
- 46:18Speaker 3: You know, people just kind of simplified it as okay,
- 46:22Speaker 3: you just learn not to lose, or you know, don't
- 46:24Speaker 3: do that again, don't do what you did last time,
- 46:26Speaker 3: as if you're you know, talking to a toddler, right,
- 46:29Speaker 3: you know, learning from right from wrong. But it's not
- 46:33Speaker 3: that simple. But yeah, you can learn from the coaches,
- 46:37Speaker 3: from the players. And you know, when I think we
- 46:40Speaker 3: look back at this losing street, most of it was
- 46:42Speaker 3: them be them themselves. Yes, whether it's turnovers, whether the
- 46:46Speaker 3: it's penalties, all those things, and those things take time
- 46:48Speaker 3: to clean up because you know, when you lose back
- 46:53Speaker 3: to bad games, even a third game, you start to
- 46:55Speaker 3: press as well. And I think that's some of the
- 46:57Speaker 3: stuff that we saw. But again, I think with the
- 47:01Speaker 3: locker room every time that I've been in the locker room, even.
- 47:03Speaker 2: After the losses, after the Chicago.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Loss, after even the early season losing, losing to Denver,
- 47:11Speaker 3: like different things like that. Yeah, you know, I never
- 47:13Speaker 3: saw the locker room being apart. Yeah, you know, just
- 47:17Speaker 3: and you know they only allow us to see what
- 47:19Speaker 3: we wanted. They only allow us to see what they
- 47:21Speaker 3: want us to see. But you know you can feel it.
- 47:24Speaker 2: I mean, as.
- 47:25Speaker 3: Quiet as it was after the Bears game, that disappointing game,
- 47:29Speaker 3: they were still together, still seeing Jalen Hursts walking around
- 47:33Speaker 3: and good spirits, seeing guys communicating, the offense and the
- 47:37Speaker 3: defense communicating. And it's not wasn't no pointing fingers or anything.
- 47:42Speaker 3: They weren't allow us to see that anyway. But you know,
- 47:45Speaker 3: part of growth is just like like you know, we
- 47:47Speaker 3: both mentioned, staying together and even through those losses, and
- 47:51Speaker 3: it's really a measurement of how good a team is
- 47:55Speaker 3: is how they respond through and after losses.
- 47:58Speaker 1: So yeah, absolutely, and I think, as I mentioned, you know,
- 48:02Speaker 1: coming off this win, this very dominant win against the
- 48:05Speaker 1: Las Vegas Raiders this past week, I think this is
- 48:09Speaker 1: a team that needed that quote confidence boost in certain
- 48:12Speaker 1: ways because this wasn't just I mean, the Las Vegas
- 48:15Speaker 1: Raiders are a bad team. They're a terrible team, but
- 48:18Speaker 1: you know what, there's still a professional football team, and
- 48:20Speaker 1: there are players on that team who are playing professional football,
- 48:24Speaker 1: you can hold a team to what was it, seventy
- 48:27Speaker 1: two net yards and zero.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Two ye yards seventy five overall.
- 48:32Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, And I talked with Yeah, I talked with
- 48:36Speaker 3: a couple guys after the game, Nikobe Dean, Cam Jurgens,
- 48:42Speaker 3: all those guys and especially Cam, and he said to
- 48:45Speaker 3: me that, you know, they feel good, they feel confident
- 48:48Speaker 3: that they can start to make another run. They're very cognizant,
- 48:52Speaker 3: very accountable to what had when had happened previously through
- 48:57Speaker 3: the three game losing streak, but they feel they still
- 49:01Speaker 3: feel like they're in a good space and they they
- 49:04Speaker 3: have so much to play for, of course, you know,
- 49:06Speaker 3: going for the division this weekend. But again, everybody's in
- 49:10Speaker 3: good spirits and that's what you want to see through
- 49:12Speaker 3: a three losing streak. And then, as you mentioned earlier,
- 49:16Speaker 3: all the outside noise, everybody wanted to crash out as
- 49:19Speaker 3: the kids say, it's really not that way internally.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Yeah, And I wonder what it's meant you talked about
- 49:25Speaker 1: Cam Jurgen's Nikcobe Dean who you spoke to, But I
- 49:28Speaker 1: wonder what this dominant win really kind of meant to
- 49:31Speaker 1: the team from a mental standpoint. Really I mean, are
- 49:35Speaker 1: you able to give us a little more insight as
- 49:36Speaker 1: to what it meant to not even some of the
- 49:40Speaker 1: players in particular, but just to the team overall.
- 49:43Speaker 3: Well, you talked about the defense, you know, pitching a
- 49:46Speaker 3: shutout that always feels good, especially in the National Football League.
- 49:49Speaker 3: And you know, the way, as hard as it is
- 49:54Speaker 3: to play defense in the National Football League again, seventy
- 49:57Speaker 3: to seventy five neck yards and everything.
- 49:59Speaker 2: That's hard for any team to do because even when.
- 50:02Speaker 3: You're down, you may give up a lot of passing yards,
- 50:05Speaker 3: which is usually what we see and how you know,
- 50:07Speaker 3: numbers get inflated and all. But I think, especially from
- 50:12Speaker 3: an offensive standpoint, Jeff, how they were able to be
- 50:16Speaker 3: efficient from the get go being able to run the ball.
- 50:20Speaker 3: You know, there wasn't a lot of breakout yardage from
- 50:23Speaker 3: Barkley's concern, but I think everybody committed to the run
- 50:28Speaker 3: and that opened up things in the passing game. Uh,
- 50:32Speaker 3: you know, it was important, I think, and even Jalen
- 50:34Speaker 3: would admit himself for him and I know we'll talk
- 50:37Speaker 3: about that in a few but for him to be
- 50:40Speaker 3: efficient and for him to get a rhythm, and I've
- 50:44Speaker 3: said for weeks and weeks, and I've written about no
- 50:47Speaker 3: matter how it looks, I thought it was very important
- 50:51Speaker 3: for them to just sustain drives, get getting back to
- 50:53Speaker 3: sustaining drives, and I think with that that will gain
- 50:57Speaker 3: a lot of confidence because again they even beating themselves,
- 51:00Speaker 3: whether it be penalties, whether it be turnovers, you know,
- 51:05Speaker 3: drops and all of those things. But it was just
- 51:08Speaker 3: good to see. And again we all understand that type
- 51:11Speaker 3: of opponent that the Las Vegas Ragers were, Yes, but
- 51:14Speaker 3: everybody also understood what the task at hand was. And
- 51:17Speaker 3: nobody even perceived a shutout, you know, letting on winning
- 51:21Speaker 3: thirty one nothing yea, And we all thought, you know,
- 51:24Speaker 3: it was going to be another ugly game because of
- 51:25Speaker 3: the weather, the conditions, and none of that was a
- 51:28Speaker 3: factor to those guys.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really a testament, I think, to the resolve
- 51:32Speaker 1: that this team has at this point in the season.
- 51:35Speaker 1: Given again those the perceived nonsense that we heard a
- 51:39Speaker 1: lot of on Philly sports talk radio over these past
- 51:42Speaker 1: few weeks, the result of this team is really quite incredible. Again,
- 51:46Speaker 1: folks were talking to Oj Spivey from the Philadelphia Tribune.
- 51:50Speaker 1: You can follow him on the Twitter slash x he's
- 51:53Speaker 1: out there over on threads as well. My friend, tell
- 51:57Speaker 1: everybody where they can find you out there if they
- 51:58Speaker 1: want to connect with you.
- 52:00Speaker 3: Uh yeah, so you can just go write to our website,
- 52:03Speaker 3: phillytrip dot com. Uh you can see our columns there
- 52:07Speaker 3: sports section on my columns there. Feel free to describe
- 52:11Speaker 3: if you like as well. So and again, like you said,
- 52:14Speaker 3: I'm on threads, I'm on, I'm on. I still call
- 52:18Speaker 3: it Twitter. I'm also in the blue sky as well,
- 52:20Speaker 3: so so you can find me under the same hand.
- 52:23Speaker 2: J Philly. And you know, I liked pretty good content,
- 52:28Speaker 2: like to have a little.
- 52:28Speaker 3: Fun, yes, thank you, not always sports from a cultural
- 52:33Speaker 3: standpoint and everything you know, and just to fit in there. Unfortunately,
- 52:38Speaker 3: you know, we saw the death of the untowy depth
- 52:41Speaker 3: of Bribe Ryner and his wife and all, and you
- 52:45Speaker 3: know I was I'm just big, big man dyke fan,
- 52:48Speaker 3: you know, from what his father created. And then of
- 52:51Speaker 3: course all in the family, all those guys. Somebody showed
- 52:54Speaker 3: a clip of uh the Wolf of Wall Street, which
- 52:56Speaker 3: I forgot he played the role of the father. So
- 53:00Speaker 3: you know, those things I forget about. But you know,
- 53:02Speaker 3: those some of the things that we like to have
- 53:04Speaker 3: fun you know, absolutely, so, folks.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say, folks, if you're into music,
- 53:10Speaker 1: you know, if you if you if you're like soul
- 53:13Speaker 1: music and stuff, you gotta follow OJ because he's like.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Absolutely, I like to so proclaim a Storian.
- 53:23Speaker 1: But well, folks, we're gonna take a break. But when
- 53:26Speaker 1: we get back, we're gonna dive into Jailen Hurts. We're
- 53:28Speaker 1: gonna also dive into you know who may need to
- 53:30Speaker 1: step up on this Eagles team as well. We're gonna
- 53:33Speaker 1: be back after our break. Stick with us, all right,
- 53:37Speaker 1: We are back again with our good friend O. J.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Spivey from the Philadelphia Tribune. Search him out at OJ
- 53:44Speaker 1: Philly on the socials out there, and uh, I gotta
- 53:47Speaker 1: I gotta get into Jaialen Hurts with you too, because
- 53:49Speaker 1: there is just so much relentless back and forth this
- 53:53Speaker 1: season as it pertains to Jalen Hurts, what type of
- 53:56Speaker 1: quarterback he is, what he needs to do, what he
- 53:58Speaker 1: shouldn't be doing, what the hope is for the future,
- 54:02Speaker 1: et cetera. And look, Jalen Hurts is not a one
- 54:05Speaker 1: hundred percent perfect quarterback in this league. No quarterback is
- 54:09Speaker 1: perfect in this league. Act even Matt Stafford, who is
- 54:12Speaker 1: having the quote MVP season that many have you know,
- 54:15Speaker 1: crowned him to be having at this point. But the
- 54:17Speaker 1: fact of the matter is Jalen Hurts is probably the
- 54:21Speaker 1: most successful quarterback that this Eagles franchise has ever had.
- 54:25Speaker 1: I am very secure in saying that phrase. Certain people
- 54:30Speaker 1: that they're not secure yet in saying that phrase, and
- 54:33Speaker 1: it really, it really bothers me at times. He's still
- 54:36Speaker 1: in his prime. I think there's growth. We talked about
- 54:38Speaker 1: growth earlier. I still think there is growth for Jalen Hurts,
- 54:41Speaker 1: and I think that's something, at least from an outsider's perspective,
- 54:45Speaker 1: something that he will gravitate towards. He wants to learn,
- 54:48Speaker 1: he wants to grow as a quarterback a person in
- 54:51Speaker 1: this league. You know, the type of relationships that he
- 54:54Speaker 1: has with his teammates. I'm wondering, what do you say
- 54:58Speaker 1: to those folks out there that are constantly critical of
- 55:00Speaker 1: Jail and herds Given how much he's accomplished as the
- 55:03Speaker 1: franchise quarterback of this team, it amazes me sometimes. Wanted
- 55:07Speaker 1: to get your thoughts on it, my friend.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Well, where do we start? The first thing is I think,
- 55:14Speaker 2: for one, I think.
- 55:16Speaker 3: The term elite or elite quarterback is a bit overused,
- 55:20Speaker 3: and I think it's kind of, you know, uh, a
- 55:24Speaker 3: misdiagnosis for a lot of people. And you mentioned, you
- 55:27Speaker 3: know someone who's going to go to the Hall of
- 55:29Speaker 3: Fame in Matthew Stafford. I mean they're in great shape,
- 55:31Speaker 3: the l A. Rams being the number one seed, but
- 55:34Speaker 3: I mean he had a game with multiple turnovers. Was rndous, right,
- 55:40Speaker 3: a team he should have blown out, right, But you
- 55:43Speaker 3: know you're talking about Jared Golf, you know, Lamar Jackson,
- 55:47Speaker 3: the mediocre year that he's having a two time MVP.
- 55:50Speaker 3: All quarterbacks are going to make mistakes and all. And
- 55:53Speaker 3: I think, you know, we just have to accept Jana
- 55:57Speaker 3: Hurst for who he is. And if you don't believe
- 56:00Speaker 3: he's an elite, that's fine.
- 56:02Speaker 1: But we don't have to categorize like it's like exactly
- 56:05Speaker 1: to put somebody in a box exactly.
- 56:08Speaker 3: But here, here are the things who here are the
- 56:10Speaker 3: things that I believe are facts, Okay, And it's hard
- 56:14Speaker 3: to argue. And even Jeffrey Lorie has said it, he
- 56:18Speaker 3: has to clutch the gene. Okay, that's proven, all right.
- 56:21Speaker 3: And also, you know there's so much talk about him
- 56:25Speaker 3: being risk adverse. I call it risk management.
- 56:28Speaker 1: So yes, and there's a certain level of smart football
- 56:33Speaker 1: play happening too. As frustrated as yes.
- 56:37Speaker 2: And you have to be. And I'll take it a
- 56:39Speaker 2: step further, Jeff.
- 56:40Speaker 3: And you know, he is what I call he is
- 56:46Speaker 3: not only if he's a master, but he is mastering
- 56:49Speaker 3: the art of the calculative risk, which is so important
- 56:52Speaker 3: as a quarterback. And you know, this was the term
- 56:55Speaker 3: that goes way back to Bart Starr when he won,
- 56:58Speaker 3: you know, under Vince Lombardi and everything. I mean, you
- 57:00Speaker 3: talk about a coach who probably said, you know, don't
- 57:02Speaker 3: turn over the football, right, So, and then you look
- 57:05Speaker 3: at the numbers. I mean, what he's doing, it's working.
- 57:11Speaker 3: Since twenty twenty one, Jeff, including the playoffs, the Eagles
- 57:14Speaker 3: are like forty two and one when they win the
- 57:17Speaker 3: turnover battle. Yeah, and they're seven and zero this year.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Yeah when they win and turnover battle. Right, So that's working, okay.
- 57:26Speaker 3: And again, you know, it just goes back to people
- 57:28Speaker 3: who just don't like him. Maybe they just don't like
- 57:32Speaker 3: they still't getting over the draftick in all. And you know,
- 57:36Speaker 3: whenever he has a bad game, it's like, oh, yeah,
- 57:38Speaker 3: I told you so, or I told you this is
- 57:40Speaker 3: that crazy. Yeah, but we're all talking about a quarterback
- 57:44Speaker 3: who has won time and time again. All he does
- 57:48Speaker 3: is win. Why is that not enough for people? And
- 57:51Speaker 3: I know that people have this obsession of you want
- 57:56Speaker 3: to mold a quarterback, particularly Jalen Hurst into what you
- 58:00Speaker 3: want him to be instead of accepting them who he is.
- 58:03Speaker 3: And again, it's not something where you said it best.
- 58:06Speaker 3: I think it's not something that you really have to
- 58:08Speaker 3: categorize him. If you're going to categorize him, it's winning, yes,
- 58:13Speaker 3: I mean he's already brought home the trophies.
- 58:15Speaker 1: Yes.
- 58:16Speaker 3: I mean you know, do you want him to win
- 58:17Speaker 3: an MVP. It's a lot of MVPs out there that
- 58:20Speaker 3: don't have the Lombardi Trophy.
- 58:22Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson, like you mentioned, I mean, he's been searching
- 58:25Speaker 1: for that championship. And you know what, he has fantastic
- 58:29Speaker 1: regular seasons. I will not take anything away from him,
- 58:32Speaker 1: but man, when it comes playoff time, Lamar Jackson doesn't
- 58:35Speaker 1: necessarily show up.
- 58:37Speaker 2: Look at Dak Prescott's numbers. I mean, he's.
- 58:40Speaker 3: Phenomenal Against the NFC East, he puts up phenomenal numbers.
- 58:43Speaker 3: He's probably gonna get another four thousand yards this year.
- 58:46Speaker 3: You were talking about him being an MVP candidate as
- 58:50Speaker 3: they were trying to ascend and make that playoff run.
- 58:52Speaker 3: But you see where they are now. But again, I mean,
- 58:56Speaker 3: Jalen's not going to And I've talked to so many
- 59:00Speaker 3: people around the team, including Mike Quick, including merl Reee.
- 59:04Speaker 3: I know their homers in a booth and everything. But
- 59:06Speaker 3: when you get them away from the microphone and you
- 59:09Speaker 3: really talked football with these guys and they've seen it
- 59:12Speaker 3: all and they they've raved about Jalen. They they tell me,
- 59:17Speaker 3: they've told me this personally, he is the type of
- 59:19Speaker 3: guy that if there's something that you covet or you
- 59:23Speaker 3: want someone to run something for you or be the leader,
- 59:27Speaker 3: he is that guy. And another thing that Mike Quick
- 59:30Speaker 3: told me real quick was, you know, he may take
- 59:36Speaker 3: off some teammates, he may took off some coaches. And
- 59:40Speaker 3: one of the things that I wrote, uh in one
- 59:43Speaker 3: of my stories was Okay, you may not like his methods,
- 59:46Speaker 3: but you love the results.
- 59:48Speaker 2: And what are the results?
- 59:49Speaker 3: Yes, like we're all we're all these haters on on
- 59:52Speaker 3: parade that like were they you know, were they hiding
- 59:56Speaker 3: at home or were.
- 59:56Speaker 2: They out there celebrating.
- 59:57Speaker 1: Exactly the the hundreds of thousands of folks there on
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Broad Street and outside.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: And you mentioned also too, Jeff, he's only going to
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: get better. He's still ascending into this quarterback position at
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: twenty seven years old. And you mentioned other guys like, uh,
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: seasoned veterans like Matthew Stafford and so, I mean, what
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: is he thirty seven now and he's still playing a
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: elite level?
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: I mean if Jalen can still a sin and still
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: learn his game, I mean he's still going to be
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: in he can still be an elite quarterback at thirty
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: five years old.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean absolutely absolutely, I can't I just can't
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: wait to see where his career goes with this sagon.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Sure, it's a bonus chef.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: I mean, he's still learning the position and he's already
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: been to two Super Bowls and one one.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: Yeah, are you kidding me?
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: No, it's great. Actually, it's that's that's why the criticism
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: kills me.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: That's a blessing man.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: Yes, seriously, this is Uh, there's so many quarterbacks we
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: can go to that we grew up watching in the eighties.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: In the nineties. For the love of God, big.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: Dan Shouts fan. I was a big Dan Marino fan.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: Yeah they never won. Yeah it all looked pretty Yeah
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: they never won for whatever reason. You can split hairs
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: and you know half theories as to why they didn't win,
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: But they didn't.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Yep. So Jim Kelly Man, I always loved watching him.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Never wanted yeah, never want it.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: Love watching all those guys, you know, the bomb squad.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Yep. Absolutely. Well, look, I mean no team in the
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: NFL is perfect. I mean there are inconsistencies, of course
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: with this Eagles team that we've seen week after week.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: And yes, the narrative is, yes, we have to continue
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: working on it. We have to make sure that we're
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: doing our jobs. We need to make sure that we're executing.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: And this is both on the offensive side of the
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: ball and the defensive side of the ball. I mean,
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: we've we've heard this for sure. It's not a criticism,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: it's just this is what it is. You know, there
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: are inconsistencies in the game of football. I'm wondering, OJ,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: who do you think really kind of needs to step
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: up a little bit more in this final stretch of
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: the regular season. Here is there anybody that kind of
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: comes to your mind, well or any maybe perhaps yeah.
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: Well I think yeah, probably. If I say on the
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: offensive side, I would say the offensive line, and again,
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: they played well on on Sunday against the Raiders, and
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: if they can just keep that going. Still, get Lane
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: Jack Lane Johnson back for the Commanders down in DC,
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: that can only help. But as far as offensive concerned,
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: I would say the offensive line again, keep those penalties
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: to a minimum and you know, just do their job
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: and all. And you know, for whatever reason, a running
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: game isn't isn't what it has been. But I kind
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: of knew that. But I mean, as crazy as it is,
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: say Kwon Barkley can still get over a thousand yards
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: and shit, I know that's probably half of the production.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: But again, are we being a bit disingenuous to think
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: that he was going to run for two thousand guards?
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: But again, I get it. You want to see the efficiency.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: You want to see, you know, a couple of sixty
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: yard runs and all off. But again, you know, it's
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: a brutal schedule. But it's been a brutal schedule and
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: you know, the guys have been hurt and still not
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: playing well. All those things, but again, you're still in
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: great sheet on defense. It's hard to say because I
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: mean these past few weeks, I believe, since the middle
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: of November, with the exception of the Chicago game, and
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: I know that kind of got out of hand because
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: the Eles the offense wasn't able to sustain drives. I mean,
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: they're really averaging I think about fourteen thirteen, fourteen points
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: a game this past month, so that's really good. The
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: addition of Jalen Phillips has really secured that defensive line.
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: What's happening with Brandon Graham. But as far as step up,
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: I don't know if step up would be the word,
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: but a couple guys that I'm looking at that could
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: maybe make some plays here down in the stretch. More
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: plays is a jill move on a defensive line. And
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: there's been a lot of talk, and well not as
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: much talk now because he's been playing well, but Dorri
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: Jackson and you know, fans were giving him the business
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: early on.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: I was giving him the business earlier.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: Yeah, But I go back to what Vic Fangio had
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: told us in the media, is that, like he pretty
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: much told us week after week, he'll be Okay, it's
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: going to take some time, but I believe he'll be okay.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: There's a reason why he kept running him back out there.
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: You know, he took us licks and all, but he
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: told us. But also again taken into consideration that not
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: everyone can play for Vic Fangil. We saw those stories
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: out of Miami when he was there. And again maybe
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: we took Darius Slay for granted, you know some people
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: right so solid as he was, and you know we
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: saw that he's hard to replace. But I think Dori
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Jackson's played well and I think going back to the unit,
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: as you said, as far as defensively, I think they
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: can step it up and maybe trying to take the
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: ball away a little bit more, but they've been so
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: solid as of late as far as tackling is concern
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: and getting off the field. But we know we did
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: see Bonn take the ball away last week. But you know,
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: if someone like a Dromo can step up, or they
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: can get a couple more intersections out of that defensive backfield,
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: I think that will help too. And I think another
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: name that you want to watch, I think Macouba, the
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: rookie who was playing who came on as of late
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: before he got hurt. He's expected to come off the
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: injured list just in time for Buffalo. Will see if
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: he plays. But I think it was a good idea
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: or a good pickup that how he picked that, how
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: he was able to get Marcus SEPs because he knows
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: the defense and at least he'll be solid.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: So yeah, that's a couple of things.
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: But mainly to just pretty much wrap up your question here,
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: I think it's a lot of it just falls on
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: the offensive line. They can keep that consistency and again
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: that momentum that I asked Cam Jurgen's about this past week.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: If they can keep that going, I think they're really
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: going to be in good shape. Because what people are
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: telling me around the league is if the Eagles can
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: put it together these last three games, nobody's gonna want
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: to play them in the season.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they're going to be quite the challenge
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: in the postseason if the latter part of this season
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: is really going to go their way, and if they
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: if they can be disciplined in various ways, specifically with
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: the offensive line, like you're talking about it, absolutely, I mean,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: and I guess to close us out here, OJ we
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: see time and time again players who come up big
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: in certain in game situations. And there's some guys that
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: have a surprised us. You just mentioned one, and recently
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: that guy's really been a Dori Jackson, who's played some
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: really good defensive football as of late. So I'm wondering,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: is is there an under the radar type of player
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: who you think could be a real difference maker down
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: the stretch on this Eagles team? What are your thoughts here?
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I go back to Jackson, and again
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: it's hard offensively because they're so stacked. Yeah, you know,
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: I know a lot of fans are calling for Bigsby
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: to step up. Yeah, and you know, be a good
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: you know, he good change of pace back. But that's
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: all about, you know, giving him opportunities, giving him.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: Carries right.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: Right there, right exactly. So that's that's more so coaching decisions.
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: And even though it seems like Zack barn has had
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: more of a quiet year, but he's up there in
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: the upper echelon as far as tackles and tackles for
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: loss and everything, and you know, maybe he steps up
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: a little bit more taking the ball away as we
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: saw last week. But overall, Jeff, I mean, other than
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: the offensive line, nobody really stands out. And again I
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: think they're in good shape. Like you said, discipline, you know,
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: lack of penalties, execution, catching the ball, all those things.
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: If they can just keep ascending to that, again, I
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: think they'll be in good shape. And the NFC is
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: so wide open. I know the Rams are where they are.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: I know the Eagles had you know, miss probably missed
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: the opportunity to become a two seed. But again, the
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: way things are falling and there's no runaway team in
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: the NFC, that seems to be more NFC. You know,
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: I don't trust a lot of guys over there either,
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: as good as Denver is, but you know, you talk
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: about l A, you know, Seattle, and you know whoever
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: comes out of the South, who knows right, but the
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: forty nine ers as well, and you know the West
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: is going to have three teams come out and being
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: the playoffs most likely. But I think the Eagles could
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: beat all those guys, like you said, if they just
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: stayed disciplined.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Absolutely great talking to my friend again, folks. OJ Spivey
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: from the Philadelphia Tribune. Great, great content that he is
