- 0:00Speaker 1: Eight oh six thirteen ten Wiba and Ask the Experts,
- 0:04Speaker 1: joined this morning by Andrew Larson. Of course, Andrew comes
- 0:07Speaker 1: to us from Larsen Home Services the website Larsenhome Services
- 0:12Speaker 1: dot com. That's l A R. S O N Home
- 0:16Speaker 1: Services dot Com. Telp number six so eight five three
- 0:19Speaker 1: five forty three forty three. That's five three five four
- 0:22Speaker 1: three four to three. Andrew, how you doing this morning?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Oh, wonderful. It actually feels like some fall weather. Now
- 0:30Speaker 2: loving it, chrisy No, It's crazy how the how things
- 0:34Speaker 2: switch so fast. You know, I'm liking fall. It feels good.
- 0:39Speaker 2: It feels good, nice and cool in the morning.
- 0:41Speaker 1: It's it's it's been. It's been a real nice reprieve
- 0:43Speaker 1: from that heat we had a couple of weeks ago.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I know your guys, Uh, obviously they work year round
- 0:48Speaker 1: in all conditions, but I know the crews they really like, uh,
- 0:52Speaker 1: these these cooler type days. And one of the areas
- 0:55Speaker 1: that's a whole lot easier to take a look at
- 0:58Speaker 1: on cooler days are roof and roofs get very hot.
- 1:02Speaker 1: They obviously the sun beats down on them all day.
- 1:06Speaker 1: They can be a really hot, warm surface and that
- 1:08Speaker 1: can have an effect on certain types of roofs. And
- 1:12Speaker 1: something you want to be aware of is we go
- 1:13Speaker 1: through all the different seasons here, from those hot, hot
- 1:16Speaker 1: days and then in the winter sub zero temperatures, all
- 1:20Speaker 1: of that stuff affects your roof, your shingles, all of
- 1:23Speaker 1: those areas, and your guys do a fantastic inspection, seventeen
- 1:28Speaker 1: point inspection if I remember correctly, to be specific when
- 1:32Speaker 1: it comes to a roof inspection, Let's talk about what
- 1:35Speaker 1: all goes into that, Andrew, and why not just a
- 1:38Speaker 1: ten point inspection? Or why not just a fifteen? Why seventeen?
- 1:42Speaker 2: Hey the shingles look okay, your roof's fine? Yeah? Or
- 1:47Speaker 2: I can tell from the ground here you need a
- 1:49Speaker 2: new roof. Honestly, we hear stuff like that. I actually
- 1:53Speaker 2: was on a call, I don't know, a couple months
- 1:55Speaker 2: ago with a roofing contra. We were talking sales. They
- 1:59Speaker 2: were talking possibly using our sales trainer, and I was
- 2:02Speaker 2: asking them a few questions, and I knew that they
- 2:05Speaker 2: didn't really use any marketing. They're based out of New Jersey,
- 2:07Speaker 2: Big roofing company actually a lot more roofing than we did.
- 2:11Speaker 2: But we were talking about sales and marketing and how
- 2:14Speaker 2: they do things. And I knew that they didn't market
- 2:18Speaker 2: I knew that they had a cold call center. They
- 2:19Speaker 2: had thirty five people in their cold call center, and
- 2:21Speaker 2: they just called and called and called and called and
- 2:23Speaker 2: called and asked if homeowners would like a free roof inspection.
- 2:25Speaker 2: They said yes, they had somebody out there that day
- 2:27Speaker 2: to do a free roof inspection. And then so then
- 2:29Speaker 2: I asked him, I said, okay, cool, how do you
- 2:31Speaker 2: go about your roof inspection? You guys all get on
- 2:34Speaker 2: the roof, right, he says no. I said, well, how
- 2:37Speaker 2: do you do a roof inspection If you don't get
- 2:39Speaker 2: on the roof, we can tell from the ground. Oh no,
- 2:42Speaker 2: I said, no you can't. I said, so, let me
- 2:44Speaker 2: get this straight. You're calling people asking for a free
- 2:46Speaker 2: roof inspection. You are going to their house and not
- 2:48Speaker 2: getting on their roof and then telling them they need
- 2:50Speaker 2: a new roof. That's why we do a roof inspection. Okay,
- 2:55Speaker 2: But at that point my conversation with this person was done. Yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 2: because that's how people get taken advantage of, and that's
- 3:02Speaker 2: why we do a roof inspection because a lot of
- 3:04Speaker 2: homeowners think, hey, I have a leak, I need a
- 3:07Speaker 2: new roof, or my roof is fifteen years old, I
- 3:11Speaker 2: need a new roof. Well, that's just not true. We
- 3:14Speaker 2: are not in the business of trying to fill up landfills.
- 3:16Speaker 2: We're not in the business of trying to take advantage
- 3:18Speaker 2: of people. So we came up with a it's actually
- 3:22Speaker 2: a sixteen point number. Seventeen is comments, which is so
- 3:25Speaker 2: we're all clear. I don't want someone to call me
- 3:26Speaker 2: out on this, but we do a roof inspection and
- 3:29Speaker 2: we ask people, even if we're out there just for gutters,
- 3:33Speaker 2: we ask people if they'd like a free roof inspection
- 3:35Speaker 2: because people don't really usually get their roof inspective, but
- 3:39Speaker 2: especially from a I mean, I like to say a
- 3:41Speaker 2: company with honesty and integrity, because if your roof is okay,
- 3:45Speaker 2: we're going to tell you it's okay. But go through
- 3:48Speaker 2: this roof inspection that we do real quick. Number One
- 3:50Speaker 2: asphalt Do we see granular loss? Do we see nail pops,
- 3:55Speaker 2: torn shingles, missing ridge cap? What are we seeing? That's
- 3:59Speaker 2: something that we want to look where. That's really how
- 4:00Speaker 2: we're going to tell the general age of a roof
- 4:04Speaker 2: is by curling cracking, granular loss, stuff like that. If
- 4:09Speaker 2: we see a lot of that, that's gonna pretty much
- 4:11Speaker 2: be a red flag of okay, we're not going to
- 4:14Speaker 2: be able to repair or restore this roof. That's that's
- 4:18Speaker 2: just kind of a main thing. There's other things that
- 4:20Speaker 2: can happen where even if the even if the shingles
- 4:23Speaker 2: are okay, sometimes we've seen it where the actual the
- 4:27Speaker 2: previous install was just so bad that we're going to
- 4:30Speaker 2: be tearing off seventy five percent of the shingles to
- 4:33Speaker 2: do it right. We're most likely gonna we're most likely
- 4:37Speaker 2: going to try to go with a with a full roof,
- 4:39Speaker 2: so asphalt, how is it roof growth, We're gonna look
- 4:43Speaker 2: for algae. We're gonna look to see does it need
- 4:45Speaker 2: a cleaning. That is something that we don't actually do
- 4:47Speaker 2: right now, but it's something that we're starting to look
- 4:51Speaker 2: into because some of these alg these algaes and moss
- 4:56Speaker 2: or like in growth can actually deteriorate and start to
- 4:58Speaker 2: eat at shingles a little bit. And there's some really
- 5:00Speaker 2: great products out there nowadays that can clean it and
- 5:03Speaker 2: protect them. So not something we do right now, but
- 5:05Speaker 2: something we're possibly looking into. Valleys. Do we have open
- 5:09Speaker 2: valleyes do we have closed valleys? If they're open, are
- 5:11Speaker 2: they showing rust? If they're showing rust, do they hole?
- 5:14Speaker 2: Does the steel have holes in it? Are we seeing
- 5:17Speaker 2: a lot of debris in the valleys. A lot of
- 5:20Speaker 2: debris in the valleys. I mean that will sit and
- 5:23Speaker 2: eat it this same you got a whole bunch of
- 5:25Speaker 2: leaves and debris that builds up in your valley and
- 5:28Speaker 2: just sits there, and it freezes, and then it gets wet,
- 5:31Speaker 2: and then it dries, and sometimes it just doesn't come out.
- 5:34Speaker 2: That will slowly deterior at your deteriorate at your roof
- 5:37Speaker 2: as well as almost can cause like a dam and
- 5:40Speaker 2: will can actually clause leaking. Are if it's a closed valley,
- 5:46Speaker 2: and what I mean by closed valley meaning you can't
- 5:48Speaker 2: see any there's no steel or anything in the middle
- 5:52Speaker 2: of it. That the shingles are just like they're woven together.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Are they properly lapped? We see improperly done valleys all
- 5:59Speaker 2: the time where we can take our hand and just
- 6:01Speaker 2: lift the valley up and there's tons of wetness and
- 6:03Speaker 2: junk underneath there. That's where we want to do a restore.
- 6:07Speaker 2: We see that all the time, so that's something that
- 6:10Speaker 2: we actually fix quite a bit. Here's the main thing
- 6:13Speaker 2: when it comes to roofs chimneys. That is something where
- 6:18Speaker 2: if you don't have a chimney properly flashed with a
- 6:22Speaker 2: cricket in the back of it, and if anybody who
- 6:24Speaker 2: doesn't know a cricket is a I wouldn't call it
- 6:27Speaker 2: a technical term, but a term for just a little
- 6:30Speaker 2: roof that almost gets built behind your chimney so as
- 6:33Speaker 2: the water comes down, it just doesn't smash up against
- 6:35Speaker 2: the back of your chimney. It's actually pushed off to
- 6:39Speaker 2: either side. So that's actually a big part of our restores.
- 6:42Speaker 2: We see that all the time where the roofs don't
- 6:44Speaker 2: have that, and that's actually causing a leak, and it's
- 6:46Speaker 2: actually causing premature like chimney degradation where the tuck pointing
- 6:52Speaker 2: goes bad. The bricks are going bad because of all
- 6:54Speaker 2: the water and ice and snow that builds it behind it.
- 6:56Speaker 2: So that's something that we look at a lot as
- 6:59Speaker 2: well as the chimney flashing, because a lot of times
- 7:01Speaker 2: they're just chimney flashing. There is an art to it.
- 7:07Speaker 2: We have we work with one roofing subcontractor, and we
- 7:10Speaker 2: have three crews with them, and there's usually only one
- 7:13Speaker 2: or two guys on each one of those crews that
- 7:15Speaker 2: are allowed to touch a chimney, just because it takes
- 7:17Speaker 2: a lot of experience to cut into that chimney properly,
- 7:20Speaker 2: make the flashing properly, and get it done so we
- 7:22Speaker 2: know it's not going.
- 7:23Speaker 1: To be you know, one of these one of these weeks,
- 7:25Speaker 1: I should put up a picture because that was you
- 7:27Speaker 1: guys obviously did our roof, and as a matter of fact,
- 7:29Speaker 1: I pulled up my scope of work from you guys
- 7:33Speaker 1: twenty twenty. It's been it's been four years since you
- 7:36Speaker 1: guys did our roof at the Preval Household. But I
- 7:38Speaker 1: should put a photop because one of the I was, obviously,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and I've talked about this on the show, massively impressed
- 7:44Speaker 1: with the work that was done. But one of the
- 7:46Speaker 1: areas that I wasn't expecting was the amount of attention
- 7:50Speaker 1: that was paid to the area around the chimney and
- 7:53Speaker 1: that flashing that that went up, and like just the
- 7:56Speaker 1: color match was perfect. It's it's like folded and I
- 7:59Speaker 1: and Andrew, you got all the technical terms, but like
- 8:01Speaker 1: it's like folded perfectly into the chimney, siller's like nowhere
- 8:06Speaker 1: for water to get Like like.
- 8:07Speaker 2: There's there's a very technical way that that fold is made.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And again these are details that a lot of people
- 8:14Speaker 2: don't don't know, but when we come to your house,
- 8:16Speaker 2: we show you exactly how that stuff is supposed to.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And you also and I'm looking as as I look
- 8:21Speaker 1: at this the scope of work, even little things like
- 8:23Speaker 1: an electric pole zipper boot, I don't know what that is.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I'm guessing it had something to quit the power line.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Well, it means that you have one of those.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I do I have one?
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah, So that means that your your electrical mass is
- 8:34Speaker 2: actually on your roof, going through your roof, and it's
- 8:37Speaker 2: not coming through the side of your house. Correct, yes, yep.
- 8:39Speaker 2: So that requires a special flashing boot that actually goes
- 8:43Speaker 2: around that because because we can't just slip it over
- 8:45Speaker 2: the top, right, because you've got electrical cords running into it.
- 8:48Speaker 2: So they make a special boot that goes around it
- 8:51Speaker 2: that actually zippers up real tight, uh and and protects
- 8:54Speaker 2: that from leaking. We've seen people take regular plumbing stack
- 8:59Speaker 2: boots and just like cut the back of them and
- 9:01Speaker 2: slip that around. I'm telling you, because the zipper boots expensive.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I mean they're like one hundred and fifty bucks, right,
- 9:08Speaker 2: And that's you know, that's a square of shingles, that's all.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and that those are the details, right, yeah, And
- 9:16Speaker 1: that's and those are the impressive details. Yes, I kind
- 9:18Speaker 1: of look for more, like even things like there's like
- 9:20Speaker 1: a line item here for the not a cost, but
- 9:24Speaker 1: a noted thing about satellite dish mount Now we had
- 9:27Speaker 1: never had satellite dish, but we still had the old
- 9:29Speaker 1: one up on the roof the mounting, and and your
- 9:32Speaker 1: guys took the time to mention removing disc card that
- 9:35Speaker 1: that stuff. I mean, those are those details. We talked
- 9:37Speaker 1: with Andrew Larson of Larstom Services about that seventeen point
- 9:40Speaker 1: roof inspection. What all goes into it, Why they do that,
- 9:44Speaker 1: why they go into your what you say, can't you
- 9:46Speaker 1: see it from outside? Can't you see it from the roof? Literally?
- 9:49Speaker 1: I think that was the last time our I shouldn't
- 9:51Speaker 1: say we've I've been up there since then, but the
- 9:53Speaker 1: last time somebody other than me was in our attic
- 9:56Speaker 1: was was the folks for your your team from Larsenalom
- 9:58Speaker 1: Services because one to be sure that all the everything
- 10:01Speaker 1: under there looked good, because you know, our roof was
- 10:04Speaker 1: was older, and that was what was needed. It was
- 10:06Speaker 1: losing those those granular the stuff on the asphalt and
- 10:10Speaker 1: they were starting to kind of look crummy and just
- 10:12Speaker 1: wasn't it just wasn't it was something. It was a
- 10:15Speaker 1: it was a it was a disaster waiting to happen,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and thank goodness, nothing had happened. And that's why we
- 10:20Speaker 1: called you guys. But it was amazing the amount of
- 10:23Speaker 1: work that went into just the planning before anything was
- 10:26Speaker 1: was was done or ordered. Is making sure these are
- 10:30Speaker 1: all the details, all the little things that that to
- 10:33Speaker 1: your specific roof that that we're going to be addressing.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And the other cool thing Andrew, as we talk about
- 10:37Speaker 1: that seventeen point inspection, we talk about kind of the
- 10:40Speaker 1: scope of work and other things that you guys are
- 10:41Speaker 1: doing getting answers like going over that stuff is like
- 10:45Speaker 1: what are these things? If you have questions like like
- 10:47Speaker 1: you just explained, what is that that boot that goes
- 10:49Speaker 1: around the electrical outlet? Why is that or around the
- 10:52Speaker 1: electrical Why is that important? Why is that needed? Having
- 10:55Speaker 1: somebody to answer those questions. Your guys do and your
- 10:58Speaker 1: team does an amazing work on that type of stuff
- 11:00Speaker 1: as well.
- 11:01Speaker 2: You're exactly right. See, we have this little saying in
- 11:03Speaker 2: our office with my sales team and with production, and
- 11:07Speaker 2: it's called inspect what you expect, because everybody is suspect,
- 11:15Speaker 2: including us, and we will tell a homeowner that. That
- 11:18Speaker 2: is why we go over how we do everything that
- 11:23Speaker 2: we do because we want transparency. We don't want to
- 11:27Speaker 2: just say, hey, we're going to come put a good
- 11:29Speaker 2: roof on it, We're going to use all of this
- 11:30Speaker 2: great stuff, but then not show it to you, because
- 11:33Speaker 2: if we don't show it to you, you have no
- 11:34Speaker 2: idea what it looks like and you have no idea
- 11:36Speaker 2: what to look for when your roof gets put on.
- 11:39Speaker 2: We tell you every little detail that we do. We
- 11:41Speaker 2: tell you every product that we use, and we show
- 11:44Speaker 2: you every product that we use so you understand what's
- 11:47Speaker 2: going up there. Then when the roof is being done,
- 11:50Speaker 2: we take photos and we're going to send you those
- 11:52Speaker 2: photos so you know that everything we talked about and
- 11:55Speaker 2: everything that's on that scope is on your roof.
- 11:58Speaker 1: It's a great, great benefit and a great great peace
- 12:01Speaker 1: of mind. And it's a great time now to call
- 12:03Speaker 1: Andrew on the team at Larstome Services. Get them out
- 12:05Speaker 1: for that seventeen point roof inspection. It's not going to
- 12:08Speaker 1: cause you anything. If anything, you're going to get some
- 12:10Speaker 1: peace of mind to know that your roof is absolutely
- 12:12Speaker 1: perfect and good to go. And of course they've got
- 12:14Speaker 1: so many great options if you need a repair, you
- 12:16Speaker 1: need a replacement, Andrew on the team at Larsenalme Services.
- 12:19Speaker 1: They'll be straight with you, they'll be honest, they'll show
- 12:21Speaker 1: you all of your options. I'll let you make an informed,
