- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to jipop now pot fat as if you from
- 0:08Speaker 1: the future, you know what you do, show us out
- 0:11Speaker 1: of my.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Back, so disrespect to leg like hip hop and say
- 0:18Speaker 2: the stays get right into the business.
- 0:23Speaker 1: What up?
- 0:24Speaker 2: What uh?
- 0:25Speaker 1: What uh? What be up? Be down?
- 0:32Speaker 2: People sewing, you know, because because they got cooked in
- 0:38Speaker 2: a battle uh divisive album, you know, g n X,
- 0:45Speaker 2: all that good stuff.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Let me see if I can turn this music down
- 0:49Speaker 3: a little picked though, because I don't wanted to dominate
- 0:56Speaker 3: the conversation, so to speak. But we're just gonna get started.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Welcome to a impromptu spur of the moment pop out
- 1:07Speaker 2: episode live stream of me getting ready for the best
- 1:15Speaker 2: of twenty twenty four on my list here I wrote
- 1:18Speaker 2: twenty twenty five.
- 1:19Speaker 1: See I'm in the future already. Let's let's see if
- 1:25Speaker 1: that music gotta be lowered.
- 1:27Speaker 2: That dude gotta shut up? Okay, mainly because you know
- 1:34Speaker 2: around this time, as you've seen right, Apple Music has
- 1:38Speaker 2: their recap of what you've been listening to the whole year.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Spotify is on the way. From what I understand. YouTube
- 1:45Speaker 2: music started first, which was interesting because they kind of
- 1:49Speaker 2: set it up where, at least for me, the videos
- 1:56Speaker 2: that are labeled. Music that I watched are like at
- 2:00Speaker 2: the top of my list. So like when the whole
- 2:02Speaker 2: battle was happening and I was going to like Kendrick's
- 2:05Speaker 2: YouTube to listen to like Euphoria.
- 2:09Speaker 1: And stuff like that, or watch the Not Like Us.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Video, those rank pretty high because you know, that's where
- 2:17Speaker 2: I was doing my listening before it hits streaming services.
- 2:20Speaker 2: So their list is weird YouTube music. But I guess
- 2:22Speaker 2: if you use YouTube music, then it's not weird for you.
- 2:28Speaker 2: But you also have like Rolling Stones, who did a
- 2:32Speaker 2: top one hundred I think albums of twenty twenty four.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Probably on this week's show, I'll talk about that, you know,
- 2:42Speaker 2: unless there's another list to talk about. But right here
- 2:46Speaker 2: on Hip Hop Now podcast, every year I do a
- 2:49Speaker 2: best of twenty twenty whatever, right, I've been doing it
- 2:54Speaker 2: for a minute, especially in video form.
- 2:57Speaker 1: It's well video form is kind of new.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But what I found is I needed a system that
- 3:07Speaker 2: worked for me, you know what I'm saying, and wasn't
- 3:12Speaker 2: too overbearing for people who you know, want to just
- 3:16Speaker 2: know what was hot this year, but they don't want
- 3:19Speaker 2: twenty five to fifty one hundred albums. And I feel
- 3:23Speaker 2: like it's more beneficial to break it down to at
- 3:27Speaker 2: least fifteen, ten being great albums from this year and
- 3:33Speaker 2: five being what I think were the best of this year.
- 3:37Speaker 2: So even if you look at my top five and
- 3:40Speaker 2: you heard them and you're not feeling them, but maybe
- 3:43Speaker 2: you didn't hear everything, the ten will give you a nice,
- 3:48Speaker 2: you know, idea of some of the other albums that
- 3:51Speaker 2: were dope.
- 3:52Speaker 1: And I'm not gonna lie.
- 3:53Speaker 2: This year started off semi strong because it was a
- 3:57Speaker 2: lot of albums that dropped earlier on that I was
- 4:00Speaker 2: kind of like, yo, you you just gotta you gotta
- 4:06Speaker 2: put these in your top five now because they were
- 4:09Speaker 2: just that good early on. And then you know, we
- 4:12Speaker 2: hit some lows with certain albums that were highly anticipated
- 4:16Speaker 2: that I didn't necessarily like, some albums that were highly
- 4:22Speaker 2: anticipate anticipated that I didn't necessarily like a lot, or
- 4:28Speaker 2: I was disappointed, but then found myself listen and then
- 4:32Speaker 2: over time, you know, I was like, Okay, well I
- 4:35Speaker 2: listened to it that much throughout the year has to
- 4:38Speaker 2: be one of the best, at least to be So.
- 4:40Speaker 1: It's a lot of that going on with me and
- 4:43Speaker 1: what I do.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Around this specific time is I listened to everything I
- 4:49Speaker 2: have on my list, because I have my list already,
- 4:51Speaker 2: but my list is you know, changing because of quick
- 4:56Speaker 2: drops or albums I didn't know what were coming out
- 4:58Speaker 2: or like, for example, I'm kind of trying to hold
- 5:03Speaker 2: off and I will for this draining Snoop to see
- 5:06Speaker 2: where that lands for me. So far with the singles,
- 5:09Speaker 2: I ain't gonna front.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Oh shout out to Yin's vacation mode.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Now, man, I'm working. I'm just home. You know, I'm
- 5:21Speaker 2: working from home. This is my work though. But Yo,
- 5:27Speaker 2: it's a thing where I listened to everything again regardless
- 5:33Speaker 2: of when it came out, and just to double back
- 5:37Speaker 2: because I was going to say what I thought about
- 5:39Speaker 2: the Snoop and dra singles. I think the first two
- 5:42Speaker 2: singles were Dope, the one would sting.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I'm kind of yeah on.
- 5:46Speaker 2: It could be a skip depending on what else is
- 5:49Speaker 2: on the album. Also for me, it could be a
- 5:52Speaker 2: skip where it lands on the album. If that's like
- 5:55Speaker 2: the second to last song on Snoop and Dre's Missionary
- 5:58Speaker 2: album and the last track is dope and the majority
- 6:02Speaker 2: album is dope, I might let it rock because it
- 6:06Speaker 2: wasn't that bad. It just was Snoop and Dre set
- 6:10Speaker 2: a tone with those first two singles, and now you
- 6:13Speaker 2: hear this new song with stinging.
- 6:15Speaker 1: It was kind of like it's all right, but again.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Around this time of year, while a lot of people
- 6:24Speaker 2: are dropping their best of the year. Previously, I used
- 6:30Speaker 2: to get closer to the new year or closer to
- 6:34Speaker 2: the Christmas holiday and then released months. But I'm going
- 6:39Speaker 2: to release my list on the what is it the sixteenth?
- 6:45Speaker 2: It was my show debuts on Fridays, so I'm going
- 6:52Speaker 2: to release my list on the twentieth, right, so we
- 6:56Speaker 2: still got some time. I think Snoop and Dre drop
- 6:59Speaker 2: on the thirteenth, which is next Friday, so.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'll have some time in between then.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Obviously, the albums all review and listen, but going back
- 7:10Speaker 2: and listening to the albums that dropped, the albums that
- 7:13Speaker 2: I had.
- 7:13Speaker 1: On my list, it's just more so confirmation of my thoughts. Right.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Some albums dropped a while ago, some are pretty recent.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Some like for example, Dog Pound's album We All, What
- 7:29Speaker 2: is It?
- 7:29Speaker 1: We All? We Got? We All, We Got cmb yo.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I was listening to that album really like this year,
- 7:38Speaker 2: like daily. I was just I kept playing it over
- 7:41Speaker 2: and over. It just was meeting some stand up for
- 7:46Speaker 2: me as far as expectations. Were also surprised to me
- 7:49Speaker 2: in some ways, and it just fit my mood at
- 7:52Speaker 2: the time, So I just kept listening to it. Right,
- 7:55Speaker 2: So albums like that, you go back after months of
- 7:59Speaker 2: not hearing it, say, you know, was it just that time?
- 8:03Speaker 2: You know, wasn't just the mood I was in at
- 8:05Speaker 2: time and it kind of fits or I listened to it,
- 8:08Speaker 2: you know, does it sound the same now? So it's
- 8:12Speaker 2: just a lot of that, you know, with this list,
- 8:15Speaker 2: and you know, to be fair, like there are things
- 8:19Speaker 2: that some people like them not be on my list
- 8:22Speaker 2: because you know why it's my list. That's why, you
- 8:26Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. It doesn't mean it's why. It
- 8:29Speaker 2: just means that I had to take this list and
- 8:32Speaker 2: squish it down to something precise and something where I
- 8:39Speaker 2: could talk in detail about these albums or at least
- 8:43Speaker 2: give you, you know, regarding the ten, the good ten
- 8:47Speaker 2: I called them. I could something that I can at
- 8:49Speaker 2: least go and say, yo, this was great because of
- 8:53Speaker 2: it's real quick. This was great because of that real quick.
- 8:57Speaker 2: And the top five will be the ones I will,
- 8:59Speaker 2: you know, elaborate on and there's a lot to consider. Man,
- 9:03Speaker 2: We've had a couple of recent albums shift my list.
- 9:09Speaker 2: When I did this Best of the Year so far,
- 9:13Speaker 2: Like in June, I had a top five that I
- 9:17Speaker 2: was like, anything.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Can come along and bump some of these records.
- 9:22Speaker 2: But right now I feel solid about this, Like if
- 9:26Speaker 2: there was nothing else better than these top five at
- 9:30Speaker 2: that time in June, I'm good with this top five.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Just for context that top five, and I think most
- 9:37Speaker 2: of them survived. One was Lavish Misery with that was
- 9:44Speaker 2: Harry Fraud and Ransom. It was basically an EP. I'm
- 9:49Speaker 2: not the biggest fan of Harry Freud's beats. It just
- 9:51Speaker 2: depends on who he links with, the type of production chosen.
- 9:56Speaker 2: But I was listening to it all the time, right
- 9:59Speaker 2: that was one one mixtape I guess you call it
- 10:04Speaker 2: a mixtape that I've been champion and Davies and scram
- 10:08Speaker 2: Jones for the Love. It kind of had this obviously
- 10:12Speaker 2: a love theme, but it was really like the theme
- 10:17Speaker 2: was really like nineties sitcom and black sitcom, should I say,
- 10:22Speaker 2: like Living Single and Mark.
- 10:25Speaker 1: There's a lot of excerpts from those shows.
- 10:29Speaker 2: And samples right like the Living single theme is sampled
- 10:34Speaker 2: on this joint, and I thought for Davies, like, yo,
- 10:38Speaker 2: this is him doing something different that I could rock with,
- 10:43Speaker 2: because sometimes Davies could be monotone, even within his projects,
- 10:47Speaker 2: not just his voice.
- 10:48Speaker 1: It could just feel like then you.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Just released this the other day, But this was very different,
- 10:55Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying hearing them talk about relationships,
- 10:58Speaker 2: not necessarily in a sap the way, but in a
- 11:00Speaker 2: way that you know, most most dudes, I assume, can
- 11:04Speaker 2: relate to. That was one Shae Nowir had an EP.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I forget the name. It was something with chocolate it.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Because I don't have all the lists in front of me,
- 11:14Speaker 2: I thought that EP was dope. What else made that?
- 11:19Speaker 1: Let me see if some of that stuff is here?
- 11:24Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't want to give away my list.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Like us Kingpin in ninth Wonder, the super Golt was
- 11:29Speaker 2: on my top five.
- 11:31Speaker 1: So my top five.
- 11:33Speaker 2: At that time in June, you know, so far was
- 11:37Speaker 2: solid to me because it was like, what what I
- 11:42Speaker 2: choose for my top five is it?
- 11:44Speaker 1: Yo? Give me all the boom.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Everybody that had bars, you know, give me all the
- 11:49Speaker 2: boom back.
- 11:50Speaker 1: You know, everybody that was growling on the mic and
- 11:52Speaker 1: threatening you. You know that's my top five. It's solid. Now.
- 11:57Speaker 2: My musical palette is a little bit more varied than that.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Is that here, of course it is.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I love boom Back, and I love hardcore hip hop,
- 12:07Speaker 2: and I love bars. But hip hop is fifty one
- 12:13Speaker 2: years old, so to me, enough time is passed for
- 12:19Speaker 2: a variety of hip hop sounds to be more acceptable,
- 12:24Speaker 2: more palatable. A lot of people have done boom Back
- 12:28Speaker 2: in that very same way for decades now, So sometimes
- 12:34Speaker 2: you just have the right amount of he got it
- 12:37Speaker 2: right or she got it right to get on my
- 12:40Speaker 2: list without having to do nothing else, and then sometimes
- 12:44Speaker 2: it's well, maybe you did it in such a way
- 12:47Speaker 2: that you stood out from your piers. Also, one thing
- 12:51Speaker 2: I wanted to know about top tens, especially on top
- 12:54Speaker 2: fives or whatever between twenty four, especially as you see
- 12:57Speaker 2: new list drop, is the fact that there are some
- 13:02Speaker 2: projects that I'm from notable artists that I know some
- 13:06Speaker 2: people haven't heard because they released it exclusively on sites
- 13:11Speaker 2: like even where you had to go buy it, as
- 13:14Speaker 2: opposed to it being on Spotify, Apple Music and stuff
- 13:18Speaker 2: like that. And in some cases, some very dope albums
- 13:23Speaker 2: like Ransom released some dope stuff, but most notably that
- 13:28Speaker 2: I wanted to point out Stove God Cooks put out
- 13:32Speaker 2: a joint. I guess you could call this an EP
- 13:34Speaker 2: called stop calling me, I'm cooking, And when I tell you,
- 13:40Speaker 2: it's kind of what we've been waiting for. It is now.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I don't know if it's still available, but since we're
- 13:46Speaker 2: doing the live stream, let's see. I don't even know
- 13:54Speaker 2: the name of this website, but I'm gonna just put
- 13:56Speaker 2: it even. Wait, why yo, Microsoft, do not want to
- 14:00Speaker 2: use ban with the you know, no offense respectfully, I
- 14:06Speaker 2: don't want to use band. I want to use Google. Okay,
- 14:10Speaker 2: get right to it. Stove. Let's see still Uh nah,
- 14:18Speaker 2: looks like it's still there. No, no, no, no, it's
- 14:21Speaker 2: not still there. Look check this album and share my
- 14:23Speaker 2: screen with y'all. Real quick content unavailable. The content you're
- 14:28Speaker 2: trying to access has been removed from even due to
- 14:32Speaker 2: a copyright infringement claim submitted under Digital Millennium Copyright Act
- 14:38Speaker 2: by Baby Grand Global Corporated.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Now can you even see it? Or they just all
- 14:45Speaker 1: they like?
- 14:45Speaker 2: Man, you can't even look at it, But as you
- 14:51Speaker 2: can see, that's what that that's what that was with
- 14:54Speaker 2: stove Guard. Now I was able to get it before
- 14:57Speaker 2: that happened, And that's probably a case of of samples,
- 15:01Speaker 2: because he has a lot of samples on that joint,
- 15:03Speaker 2: and I think that's why.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I liked it. I'm not sure what it was, but
- 15:09Speaker 1: now is literally not available.
- 15:12Speaker 2: So the dilemma for me who listens to that like
- 15:16Speaker 2: frequently and consider it one of the best of the year,
- 15:22Speaker 2: can I really do that given the fact that my
- 15:25Speaker 2: list is predicated on providing insight into stuff you can
- 15:31Speaker 2: go check out. But if it's not available anymore, can
- 15:34Speaker 2: you go check it out?
- 15:36Speaker 1: So I don't know. It may wind up an honorable mention.
- 15:39Speaker 2: If it's available around the time I record my best
- 15:42Speaker 2: of the year, then I'll add it to my list,
- 15:45Speaker 2: either top five or part of the ten. But another
- 15:51Speaker 2: thing that stood out to me is there were a
- 15:55Speaker 2: lot of.
- 15:57Speaker 1: MC and I say this it's rare, but kind of
- 16:01Speaker 1: was a.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Lot of MC and producer like one producer albums I
- 16:06Speaker 2: talked about Snooping Drake getting back together to release it
- 16:11Speaker 2: was ll kooj Q, Tip with the Force but most
- 16:15Speaker 2: notably Common and Pete Rock with the Auditorium Volume one
- 16:20Speaker 2: you know which everybody loved. I expect to see it
- 16:25Speaker 2: at the top or at least mentioned wherever it may fall,
- 16:30Speaker 2: And damn there everybody in hip Hop's Best of the
- 16:33Speaker 2: Year list, I would be surprised.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Unless you're a young head and you kind of listen.
- 16:38Speaker 2: To a whole another lane of hip hop, then I
- 16:41Speaker 2: kind of get it, you know what I'm saying. But
- 16:42Speaker 2: if you kind of listen to traditional hip hop or
- 16:46Speaker 2: you have a varied palette when it comes to the
- 16:48Speaker 2: music that drops, then I can understand the fact that
- 16:53Speaker 2: it could be on some list but not all. But
- 16:57Speaker 2: when it comes to the hip hop hiphob it's going
- 17:00Speaker 2: to be on everybody's list. The crazy part about that
- 17:05Speaker 2: is towards probably the summer until now, we got a
- 17:09Speaker 2: lot of releases, y'all, and it's literally pushed out albums
- 17:15Speaker 2: that you know, in projects and EPs that I have
- 17:19Speaker 2: been listening to all year because I just feel like
- 17:23Speaker 2: this new thing is better. Still love that thing that
- 17:30Speaker 2: I had to push out of the top five or
- 17:33Speaker 2: the top ten, but this new thing is better. And
- 17:36Speaker 2: a lot of the new stuff that's dropped, you know,
- 17:39Speaker 2: some of it could be recency bias, but for the
- 17:43Speaker 2: most part when it comes to my list, anything that's
- 17:45Speaker 2: new that appears in.
- 17:46Speaker 1: My top five or top ten.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Trust me, I listened to it thoroughly and again, going
- 17:54Speaker 2: back over every project I have listed, well, it made
- 17:59Speaker 2: sense to put some in and take some other things
- 18:02Speaker 2: out just because you know it's it becomes.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Monoly mine to be honest.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Don't forget Blue and xIDE also dropped the joint called
- 18:12Speaker 2: Love the Ominous World. But there is one that I
- 18:19Speaker 2: will reveal that's not in my top five, but I
- 18:23Speaker 2: had in my top ten because when I reviewed it
- 18:25Speaker 2: on my podcast, I was kind of like, it's good,
- 18:29Speaker 2: but I don't know if it's the best of the
- 18:32Speaker 2: year because I didn't like you Tip saying running back,
- 18:36Speaker 2: I hate that song.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I skipped.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I skipped that song, but I found myself listening to
- 18:43Speaker 2: it like every day after a while, and I didn't
- 18:48Speaker 2: know if it was you know, my affinity for ll
- 18:52Speaker 2: COOJ and q Tip or legends in hip hop, or
- 18:57Speaker 2: the fact that it was just good and it was
- 18:59Speaker 2: different from everything else I had been listening to. But
- 19:03Speaker 2: I was listening to it, so I had to consider
- 19:06Speaker 2: the fact that I was listening to it in the
- 19:08Speaker 2: same way as I talked about with dog Pam, and
- 19:12Speaker 2: I got to tell you, with a lot of these
- 19:15Speaker 2: later releases from the likes of Kendrick Tyler, the creator
- 19:21Speaker 2: and Freddie Gibbs, who else.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I had to throw it do she? You know? Do
- 19:28Speaker 1: she is not that recent?
- 19:30Speaker 2: But you know what I mean, Like unexpectedly, I had
- 19:35Speaker 2: to find ways to get these in my lists, and
- 19:37Speaker 2: I had to compare it to what was there. And
- 19:40Speaker 2: I'm looking at ll Cuja in the Force like I don't.
- 19:43Speaker 2: I don't know if you're gonna make it, doog, I don't.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I don't know if you're gonna make it. So we'll see.
- 19:50Speaker 2: But right now it is on the chopping block. When
- 19:55Speaker 2: I look at my list, like let's just say snoop
- 19:58Speaker 2: and dra joint is like great, and everybody's talking about
- 20:02Speaker 2: it and how they love it.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Some gotta go, y'all, something gotta dull and well, who ja?
- 20:11Speaker 1: The Force is on the chopping block. Now. Some will say.
- 20:17Speaker 2: I know you got rock Merc on it, and I
- 20:21Speaker 2: will say.
- 20:22Speaker 1: No, I do not. Now.
- 20:26Speaker 2: I review this Marciology Joint this year. I listen to
- 20:31Speaker 2: it multiple times. I don't think it does anything for me.
- 20:37Speaker 2: I think I'm more of a fan of the production
- 20:39Speaker 2: than I am of the ROMs, And to me, that
- 20:43Speaker 2: doesn't make a best of the year. If for me,
- 20:47Speaker 2: right like now, if you love the aesthetic, you love
- 20:50Speaker 2: the way he rhymes and his cadence and his voice
- 20:54Speaker 2: and the production, it should absolutely be your best of
- 20:57Speaker 2: the year. But when I put an album on and
- 21:02Speaker 2: I'm struggling to be invested in what he's saying.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Not across the board.
- 21:08Speaker 2: I got songs on there I like, don't get it Twisted,
- 21:13Speaker 2: but I just can't consider it over albums where, whether
- 21:17Speaker 2: I was making a list or not, I'm really digging them.
- 21:21Speaker 1: It's just difficult to do that.
- 21:23Speaker 2: And one thing I'll say about my list this year,
- 21:26Speaker 2: there are a lot of my favorites who literally are
- 21:30Speaker 2: fighting for their spots, right Kendrick, is it because I
- 21:35Speaker 2: like the album? I reviewed it right here on the channel.
- 21:37Speaker 2: You can go check it out. I know it's very divisive.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Some people hate it, some people love it, some people
- 21:43Speaker 2: think it's cool. It is what it is. I can't
- 21:48Speaker 2: say I love it. I love what he did with it.
- 21:53Speaker 2: But when you start talking about love, you know what
- 21:56Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 21:57Speaker 1: You know that's a little.
- 21:58Speaker 2: That's a little different when you start talking love factor,
- 22:02Speaker 2: and I kind of feel like with the Kendrick Joint,
- 22:05Speaker 2: it's like, if I had the place it somewhere in
- 22:09Speaker 2: this catalog. It's not top three, not for me, but
- 22:13Speaker 2: I feel like it's one of the better albums, better
- 22:16Speaker 2: constructed albums of the year, and that's you know, he's
- 22:21Speaker 2: one of my favorites, but one of my other favorites.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Benny the Butcher put out what three albums, two solos
- 22:30Speaker 2: and one with thirty eight Special, and one of those
- 22:33Speaker 2: I listened to a lot, and the other two I
- 22:36Speaker 2: kind of like, but I just don't see a place
- 22:39Speaker 2: in my list for them because of everybody that's released.
- 22:43Speaker 2: And it's not necessarily comparing like, oh, well, you got
- 22:47Speaker 2: Stove Guarded, why not this Benny album? Or you got
- 22:52Speaker 2: Kendrick and why not this Benny joint is better than that.
- 22:58Speaker 2: That's not really how I'm doing it based off of
- 23:01Speaker 2: everybody's opinion. It's more so by opinion. When I press play,
- 23:05Speaker 2: what happens? Am I engaged? Do I like the songs?
- 23:09Speaker 2: If I'm trying to learn the lyrics? Do I know
- 23:11Speaker 2: the lyrics already? You know how many times do I
- 23:15Speaker 2: just go to it, you know, hopping the whip guy
- 23:18Speaker 2: drops somewhere what I want to listen to? Okay, Like
- 23:21Speaker 2: I said, with the Dog Pound Joint, Common and Pete Rock,
- 23:25Speaker 2: it was the no brainer. This is new, I've been
- 23:28Speaker 2: loving it. Let me hit play, let it rock. And
- 23:31Speaker 2: then there are some albums I feel like I'm just
- 23:33Speaker 2: putting them on to, like, you know, give give my
- 23:37Speaker 2: favorites their streams.
- 23:39Speaker 1: You know.
- 23:40Speaker 2: One thing I'm going to say, and this is another
- 23:44Speaker 2: one of my favorites, and I don't think it's going
- 23:46Speaker 2: to change unless he happens to drop an incredible album
- 23:50Speaker 2: within the next couple of days. Conway the Machine is
- 23:53Speaker 2: not even in my list. That's I'm heard of. He's
- 23:56Speaker 2: always been on my list because he's one of my
- 23:59Speaker 2: favorites and I like a lot of what he does
- 24:02Speaker 2: and what he's released this year hasn't been terrible. I
- 24:07Speaker 2: would say, definitely check out every project he's touched, including
- 24:11Speaker 2: the project he did with Ransom recently. I just don't
- 24:17Speaker 2: feel like I listened and it was better than what
- 24:21Speaker 2: I was, you know, including in my list. So obviously
- 24:24Speaker 2: everybody's list is subjective, you know, you like what you like,
- 24:29Speaker 2: you have your favorites, it's going to be a certain
- 24:32Speaker 2: level of favoritism. But I feel like this year for
- 24:36Speaker 2: my list to kind of be sketchy on some of
- 24:40Speaker 2: my favorites being in my list and some of them
- 24:44Speaker 2: not even making it because I feel like they were
- 24:47Speaker 2: just better overall projects. You know, I gotta keep it
- 24:52Speaker 2: one hundred. I gotta keep it folk, you gotta keep
- 24:54Speaker 2: it real, like yo, it's just not going to be there.
- 24:59Speaker 2: But then they are, like, you know, Freeway and Jake
- 25:02Speaker 2: One's Stimulus Package too. That seemed like there was a
- 25:07Speaker 2: lot of hype when it dropped, but you don't hear
- 25:09Speaker 2: a lot of people talk about it.
- 25:11Speaker 1: But the album is great.
- 25:13Speaker 2: It's a worthy successor to the first Stimulus Package album
- 25:18Speaker 2: by those two. So it's things like that where I'm
- 25:23Speaker 2: not really being driven by what's popular, because if that
- 25:27Speaker 2: was the case, you know, I would have a rock
- 25:32Speaker 2: Marciana on my list because I want to make sure
- 25:34Speaker 2: those heads know like, yeah, I'm in the alliance with you,
- 25:39Speaker 2: but to me, I may not have him, but maybe
- 25:43Speaker 2: I have Loop as Samurai on it, which some heads
- 25:46Speaker 2: would be like yeah, you know, so you can't really
- 25:49Speaker 2: follow the crowd. At least, that's not what we do
- 25:52Speaker 2: here on Hip Hop Now podcasts. You just have to
- 25:56Speaker 2: usually it is be a hip hop head. You know,
- 25:59Speaker 2: you tap into social media and other lists to see
- 26:03Speaker 2: how other people are thinking. I do it more so
- 26:06Speaker 2: to see if I missed anything, because that's a real thing.
- 26:10Speaker 2: There could be something incredibly dope from an artist and
- 26:15Speaker 2: everybody just haven't discovered it yet because maybe they're new
- 26:19Speaker 2: or they're underground.
- 26:21Speaker 1: And again I reiterate.
- 26:24Speaker 2: I feel like my job with this podcast, being a
- 26:27Speaker 2: news podcast, is to put you on to certain albums,
- 26:32Speaker 2: you know, or give you my perspective.
- 26:34Speaker 1: You may not like Kendrick's new album. Maybe you watch
- 26:39Speaker 1: my review and say.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Oh, I see where y'all coming from, but I still
- 26:42Speaker 2: don't like it.
- 26:43Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Or you may say, oh, I didn't catch all of that,
- 26:50Speaker 2: or you know, oh I didn't think about that. Okay,
- 26:52Speaker 2: well maybe I'll run it back. That's the whole point.
- 26:55Speaker 2: It's for the music fans. It's for the lovers of
- 26:58Speaker 2: music and this hip hop and there's just so much
- 27:05Speaker 2: to choose from now. Full disclosure, I do not have
- 27:10Speaker 2: my own album that you can kind of hear in
- 27:13Speaker 2: the background here best start a vintage the album. Shout
- 27:16Speaker 2: out to kill who produced it. I have it out
- 27:20Speaker 2: there for your consideration, a best of twenty twenty four.
- 27:25Speaker 2: But I will not be naming my own album and saying, yo,
- 27:28Speaker 2: it's crazy, y'all should listen.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Because bl blah blah blah. Of course, I feel my
- 27:33Speaker 1: stuff is great and.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Could be a companion next to a Kendrick or a
- 27:38Speaker 2: dog Poun or Comedy Pete Rock, But that's for y'all
- 27:41Speaker 2: to decide. It's not for me to tell anybody and
- 27:45Speaker 2: say it should go in there. So again, my best
- 27:50Speaker 2: of twenty twenty four lists will drop on the twentieth,
- 27:55Speaker 2: which is a Friday in audio form and video form. Yes,
- 28:00Speaker 2: like last year, I will have a Santa Claus hat
- 28:03Speaker 2: on with the hoodie because that's what it is.
- 28:05Speaker 1: People kind of liked it last year. Why not do
- 28:07Speaker 1: it again.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Maybe I'll put like hang some stuff, you know, some
- 28:12Speaker 2: Christmas stuff around, so y'all I could see Maybe I'll
- 28:16Speaker 2: return to the Dungeons of Rat, you know, with the
- 28:18Speaker 2: cassette to stuff, but I don't know it'd be COVID.
- 28:21Speaker 2: That's why I had the hoodie. But before we get
- 28:25Speaker 2: to twentieth and that drops, and I'll probably record that
- 28:30Speaker 2: in advance and make it available in events so people
- 28:32Speaker 2: can you know, hit the notification bell to be notified when.
- 28:36Speaker 1: The Coast live.
- 28:37Speaker 2: But Friday the thirteenth, next week, December thirteenth. That Friday
- 28:45Speaker 2: is a special episode where I will be ranking ice
- 28:49Speaker 2: Cube Ballance. I don't know how I didn't do this before.
- 28:55Speaker 2: The rankings do well on the channel, but they're not
- 28:58Speaker 2: gang busters or nothing like that.
- 29:00Speaker 1: They're fun to do.
- 29:02Speaker 2: I give the categories, names and phrases that are attached
- 29:08Speaker 2: to ice Cube specifically, I've done other people like Common
- 29:12Speaker 2: and ghost Face and Snoop. More recently, I did a
- 29:17Speaker 2: ranking of Daylight Soul's album so you can check that
- 29:19Speaker 2: out on.
- 29:20Speaker 1: The channel hip Hop Pod.
- 29:22Speaker 2: But the ice Cube ranking was interesting because obviously his
- 29:30Speaker 2: first four albums, I was on them when they dropped,
- 29:34Speaker 2: so I know them intimately. But then when he became
- 29:38Speaker 2: West Side Connection, which I don't include that in the
- 29:43Speaker 2: rankings because I try to keep it solo. But it
- 29:47Speaker 2: is a great album. But you know he was this
- 29:48Speaker 2: in New York. I was like, yo, man, I'm a
- 29:51Speaker 2: big fan. He ain't gonna be this in my own.
- 29:53Speaker 2: I ain't buying it, you know what I'm saying. But
- 29:56Speaker 2: it wasn't even just that. It's when he became the Yay.
- 30:00Speaker 2: He became that that ice Cube with the carnival hat
- 30:06Speaker 2: on the cover and the staff of Knowledge or whatever
- 30:08Speaker 2: he had in his hand. I checked out. I was like,
- 30:12Speaker 2: oh the ice Cube. I life is gone. So I
- 30:17Speaker 2: went back and I listened to ice Cube's entire catalog,
- 30:21Speaker 2: including his newest album, Man Damn, and I ranked them.
- 30:25Speaker 2: And what's interesting about these rankings is not really the
- 30:29Speaker 2: fun of going back and listening to all these albums
- 30:33Speaker 2: and putting them in order, you know, you think they are,
- 30:36Speaker 2: and giving your opinion and a couple of jokes here
- 30:39Speaker 2: and there.
- 30:42Speaker 1: But you realized, like I did.
- 30:44Speaker 2: With The Daylight Joint, that certain albums you thought were
- 30:47Speaker 2: bad weren't that bad.
- 30:50Speaker 1: You just didn't hear the entire album. Like, for example,
- 30:54Speaker 1: Warree Piece Value two.
- 30:57Speaker 2: I realized I never heard that album because once he
- 31:00Speaker 2: got to the don Mega Yay Yay, Yeah, I was like, oh,
- 31:03Speaker 2: I'm out. So there's different situations that arise when you're ranking.
- 31:10Speaker 2: It's just a fun thing to do, and you know,
- 31:12Speaker 2: a lot of people like to watch stuff. I watch
- 31:13Speaker 2: stuff like that on YouTube all the time. But please know,
- 31:19Speaker 2: all of this content will be available obviously in video
- 31:24Speaker 2: form on YouTube at Hip Hop Pive, but also on
- 31:28Speaker 2: audio form except for the ice Cube ranking rankings. I
- 31:34Speaker 2: don't put an audio form only because you're really only
- 31:38Speaker 2: getting seventy five percent of what's good about those shows,
- 31:43Speaker 2: because visually it's just better to see the albums and
- 31:48Speaker 2: see the categories and stuff like that, you know, at
- 31:51Speaker 2: least that's what I assume.
- 31:53Speaker 1: But maybe I'll have something else, you.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Know, on the side for people who are listening instead
- 32:01Speaker 2: of watching, and you can listen to podcasts on YouTube.
- 32:06Speaker 2: But also please know, and you can see it right there,
- 32:09Speaker 2: were on the road to one thousand subscribers right here
- 32:13Speaker 2: on YouTube. Right now, we are probably at seven hundred
- 32:18Speaker 2: and sixty something, so.
- 32:20Speaker 1: We almost there, you know.
- 32:21Speaker 2: We hit that eight hundred and it's literally only two
- 32:24Speaker 2: hundred to go. I appreciate everybody that pulled up hit
- 32:28Speaker 2: that subscribe button, whether you were here because you like
- 32:31Speaker 2: the shorts that I post on YouTube, right which aren't
- 32:35Speaker 2: all this kind of stuff, or you just like content
- 32:39Speaker 2: like this, And I'll do more live streams in the future.
- 32:42Speaker 2: I just was trying to find a way to do
- 32:45Speaker 2: them when they had purpose.
- 32:46Speaker 1: You know, I get it. Sometimes you can just pull
- 32:48Speaker 1: up people will watch you like this, like he drinking
- 32:54Speaker 1: water on the stream I'm watching. I don't do I
- 32:59Speaker 1: can't watch people do that.
- 33:00Speaker 2: But some people just want to hang out with you know,
- 33:03Speaker 2: you're dead live hit the chat, you know, things like that.
- 33:08Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, Box. But I'm going to
- 33:12Speaker 2: do more live streams and video wise. I have some
- 33:16Speaker 2: other things down the line. I don't know if I'm
- 33:18Speaker 2: gonna do a lot of interviews because I don't do interviews.
- 33:24Speaker 2: And it's a slippery slope once you start doing interviews,
- 33:27Speaker 2: because I already get emails from all kinds of people
- 33:30Speaker 2: from all walks of life. You know, Hey, you know
- 33:35Speaker 2: I'm a classical artist, but I did this hip hop thing.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Can I get an interview?
- 33:39Speaker 3: No?
- 33:40Speaker 1: Man, No, who want to hear from you? Jack? Like, oh,
- 33:44Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying.
- 33:45Speaker 2: So I didn't do many interviews, but I did a
- 33:47Speaker 2: great interview recently with Marcus J. Moore, who wrote the
- 33:52Speaker 2: daylight soul book High in Rising, which became controversial and
- 33:58Speaker 2: dominated social medialy my feed until Kendrick.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Dropt and everybody forgot about it.
- 34:06Speaker 2: But I think it's a very insightful interview that will
- 34:11Speaker 2: give you a perspective on the debate of whether it
- 34:15Speaker 2: should be supported or not, which is everybody's prerogative. But
- 34:20Speaker 2: that's the only interview officially that I've ever done for
- 34:24Speaker 2: this podcast, and I kind of feel like there are
- 34:29Speaker 2: more that can come. There's some people who ask for
- 34:31Speaker 2: interviews where I can see an angle where I could
- 34:35Speaker 2: do it, but I don't know if the audience will
- 34:38Speaker 2: be interested enough. So we'll see. And also look sidebar.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Also like I'm a just level with y'all. Since it's
- 34:47Speaker 2: a live stream, I got a request for interview with
- 34:52Speaker 2: Spoony Gen. Now some of y'all don't even know who
- 34:56Speaker 2: that is, but whether you're a kid like.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Me and eighties or even older, you know who Spoony
- 35:03Speaker 1: G is.
- 35:04Speaker 2: He's a pioneer in this game, and some consider him alleged,
- 35:09Speaker 2: you know, formerly a part of Treacherous Three.
- 35:13Speaker 1: He had his own.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Singles and hits at the time, like Godfather and stuff
- 35:20Speaker 2: like that, and somebody reached out to me and it
- 35:25Speaker 2: was Hood.
- 35:26Speaker 1: You know, I know Hood because I come from the hood.
- 35:27Speaker 2: It's not really psyched hood, but I know what I'm
- 35:30Speaker 2: reading when I'm like, hey, that's not proud for grammar.
- 35:35Speaker 2: But regardless, I was like, I could probably do that interview,
- 35:43Speaker 2: but I don't necessarily do interviews. And two, my biggest
- 35:48Speaker 2: fear is the fact that I'm not in a studium
- 35:53Speaker 2: where I can bring a guest in with the mic,
- 35:57Speaker 2: a professional mic, a professional environment, and capture the conversation
- 36:03Speaker 2: in the highest of quality feel what I'm saying. So
- 36:07Speaker 2: I would have to rely on whatever equipment Spoony g
- 36:12Speaker 2: has And I'm not trying to judge, and it may
- 36:16Speaker 2: still happen. But the email was like, Spoony just came home.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Some of y'all only on the internet. Y'all don't know
- 36:27Speaker 2: what that means, or you know, because of the internet,
- 36:29Speaker 2: you know, I came home, Mean brother was locked up.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Okay. I don't know if his internet is there.
- 36:38Speaker 2: I don't know if he has to use a phone,
- 36:42Speaker 2: if it's going to be the highest quality video and audio.
- 36:46Speaker 2: I don't know if he can have it set up
- 36:48Speaker 2: where it's stationary as opposed to you know, like like this,
- 36:53Speaker 2: like how some people do interviews, Like yeah, man, you
- 36:56Speaker 2: know what I'm saying hip hop is crazy back then, Hey, Yo,
- 36:58Speaker 2: what up?
- 36:59Speaker 1: Many?
- 37:02Speaker 2: I don't want that because then they'll ask me yeah,
- 37:06Speaker 2: but then they'll ask me, yo, when is it dropping?
- 37:10Speaker 2: I'll say, never wear Refirs nineteen, never hate because it's
- 37:15Speaker 2: a terrible interview because you can run your audio. So
- 37:18Speaker 2: those are the things I think about and why I
- 37:21Speaker 2: haven't done more interviews. I can't confirm. I can't. I
- 37:30Speaker 2: don't even know the words secure, the or whatever the
- 37:33Speaker 2: word may be, because I'm blinking right now. I can't
- 37:37Speaker 2: guarantee that their audio and video will be good enough.
- 37:43Speaker 2: Don't even have to be excellent, just good enough for
- 37:46Speaker 2: people to hear and see them.
- 37:49Speaker 1: So again, he's not the only one. But at the
- 37:53Speaker 1: end of the day, I just.
- 37:56Speaker 2: I want to be careful and I want to be
- 37:59Speaker 2: confident that any interviews I provide will be good on
- 38:05Speaker 2: the audio side and on the video side. So we'll see.
- 38:10Speaker 2: I'm holding onto the email. We'll see what the yins
- 38:13Speaker 2: would you say? Plus Missus Smith not letting just anyone
- 38:17Speaker 2: in her house. Forget Missus Smith, I'm not letting anyone
- 38:20Speaker 2: in my house. I don't even imagine I'm gonna just
- 38:24Speaker 2: leave it alone.
- 38:28Speaker 1: But there you have it. You know, best of twenty
- 38:30Speaker 1: twenty four is loaded.
- 38:32Speaker 2: I've been listening to some of the albums I have
- 38:35Speaker 2: on my list, just trying to confirm this.
- 38:39Speaker 1: I don't have Freddy Gibbs.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Here, Buddy, probably gonna get in there because this album
- 38:43Speaker 2: is dope, which means somebody got it dump and it's.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Struggling in that category.
- 38:53Speaker 2: But nevertheless, you could follow me on everything except Twitter
- 38:58Speaker 2: because I'm not on it anymore. At Vegas World, I
- 39:02Speaker 2: n see as you see whereas it right here, boom everything.
- 39:07Speaker 2: You can literally type that into TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, I
- 39:12Speaker 2: think Facebook. I have a Hip Hop Now podcast page,
- 39:17Speaker 2: and Blue Sky, which is really new. I've been on
- 39:21Speaker 2: it for a little while, but it's what I use.
- 39:25Speaker 2: It's my Twitter alternative in this instance. But definitely hit
- 39:31Speaker 2: me up, let me know what you're thinking about, and
- 39:35Speaker 2: before I go, let me know about an album you
- 39:38Speaker 2: think I should consider in my Best of the Year.
- 39:42Speaker 1: I will. I've listened to a lot.
- 39:43Speaker 2: If you look at my Instagram, I post everything I
- 39:46Speaker 2: listened to this year, regardless if I loved it, hated it,
- 39:52Speaker 2: or whatever, because I was listening to it. So I
- 39:54Speaker 2: put like now playing. If there's something you think, like, yo,
- 39:58Speaker 2: did you check out this or did.
- 40:00Speaker 1: You check out that? Let me know I ain't understand everything.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Today I was listening to an album that young Chris
- 40:06Speaker 2: had that I was like, Yo, this is dope. I
- 40:08Speaker 2: had no idea this was out. So you can leave
- 40:11Speaker 2: that in a comments section below. Thanks for everybody that
- 40:14Speaker 2: checked out the stream. Obviously, this will be available on
- 40:18Speaker 2: the channel, you know for people to check out, and
- 40:21Speaker 2: I respond to comments, but most importantly subscribe, hit that
- 40:26Speaker 2: like button and share with people you know enjoy this
- 40:29Speaker 2: kind of content.
- 40:31Speaker 1: So my Twitch followers and people like you on Twitch.
- 40:34Speaker 1: I don't usually do this on Twitch, but.
- 40:39Speaker 2: I do a lot of gaming. I do only game
- 40:42Speaker 2: on Twitch. So if you looking like, oh you are,
- 40:45Speaker 2: you'd be playing games. I don't necessarily play with the
- 40:47Speaker 2: camera on because really, this is all you would see.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Like.
- 40:53Speaker 4: I don't talk a lot, you know, even if I'm
- 40:56Speaker 4: playing Fall of Duty multiplayer, I might be like, oh
- 41:00Speaker 4: think that mother, Like I might say that, but I
