Transcript
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Hey, welcome to the Daily Rider Podcast.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: This is Kent, of course, and I wanted to come to you with a couple of quick things on this very, very short episode.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Number one is that we're going to be taking a two-week hiatus from the show starting today.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: We'll be back on Monday, August the 2nd.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And I'm taking a two-week break for a couple of reasons.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Number one is that today, actually, my dad is having major surgery, and I'm going to be with him all this week, helping him with recovery.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Um, he's going to be fine, but his surgery does take a little bit to recover from.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So uh thanks for any well wishes or prayers.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: You want to send uh my dad's way, his name is Don, and of course he's an awesome guy.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, we would definitely appreciate that.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Um, but also I'm taking a two-week break because I think it's good just to take a break once in a while.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Many times over the years, as I've done a podcast, uh, I take a break a couple weeks in December, and then sometime during the summer, I take a couple week break as well.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And I think that's good because, well, first of all, it's just good to take a break.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: And second of all, because I do a daily show these days, there's tons, I mean, literally hundreds of episodes uh in the archives.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: So I think it's good to sometimes push pause on the content so people can catch up.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: So if you have missed some episodes lately or you want to go back and revisit some, I mean, goodness, there's literally hundreds of episodes there in the archives.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: So uh definitely lots and lots of good stuff worth listening to again if you want to get your daily feel of the daily writer.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Also, I want to take a second and give you a book recommendation.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: So, summer is a time that that hopefully we have a little bit more extra available space in our schedules to do some reading.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think we should always be doing reading.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: We should be reading every day as writers, but hopefully you have a little bit more time in your schedule during the summer months to get some reading done.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And I want to recommend a wonderful book to you called The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And this is written by Christopher Vogler.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: This is actually a really, really thick book, like uh about 450 pages or so.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So uh it is a very, very thick book.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: It's a long book, but don't let that intimidate you because it is a really, really amazing book.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: This book is actually about 25 years old, and it is in, I believe, the third edition.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Um last year, I believe, Mr.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Vogler came out with the 25th anniversary edition, which I have in front of me.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And I've been working my way through way through this book.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: This is a great book because it helps you to understand story structure.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, you're probably already familiar with Joseph Campbell's uh hero's journey template that is that has been used, I mean, my goodness, for so many decades.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: And it's really baked into our psyche as human beings, this whole hero's journey template for storytelling.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's part of Homer's epics, it's part of stories from the Bible, it's part of ancient literature, and of course, it is a major part of movies and stories and novels and TV shows that we enjoy today.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: And this book is wonderful because it not only helps you to understand the stages of the hero's journey as a writer, but it also goes through the different archetypes that are part of the hero's journey, which I think is a really, really fun section of the book.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: So they talk about, you know, the hero, the mentor, the threshold guardian, the herald, the shapeshifter, the shadow, the trickster, and so forth.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: And it's just a really, really fun book.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: This is one of the uh most interesting and helpful books I've read in a long time.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: So I'll have a link in the show notes to that.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: You can grab that, or you can just get on Amazon and search for The Writer's Journey, written by Christopher Vogler.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: That's V-O-G-L-E-R.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: And maybe one of these days I'll be fortunate enough to have him as a guest on the podcast.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: That would be an absolute blast.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: So, with that said, just know that we will be back in a couple weeks on August the 2nd, picking up our daily episodes.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: As always, I so appreciate you listening.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: It means the world to me that out of all the podcasts in the world, you would take time to listen to this show.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: It really, really, truly means the world to me, and I appreciate it.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: So have a great uh couple weeks, and I will see you back on August the second.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
