- 3:06Three Wayward Girls. It was five twenty of a dirty day. The sun
- 3:14beat through the smog and still had strength enough to kiss the summer dresses walking
- 3:17sunset strip, the girls walking their poodles home to Daddy, who'd had a
- 3:23hard day at the office. Having nothing better to do the dogs than I
- 3:25chatted. I took my leave and I tipped up through the cadillacs, patted
- 3:30their saucy fish tails, watched my hand turned green, then walked into Shaymasons
- 3:35on the strip. The kindly picture folk were already there, exchanging pills from
- 3:39matching poison A pill boxes and discussing the high cost of nervous breakdowns. Then
- 3:46herm the major d saw me adled his way through all that box office gold
- 3:50offered me two things, Mabel, no sheet phone three times, and especially
- 3:54of a house admiral haughty gulash with matsa balls. I took them up the
- 4:00park, was cutting through their delicate contours. When there was a hand on
- 4:03my hand cool than I am, it annoyed. But when I saw that
- 4:08the moist hand on mine belong to Phil Gardner, peddler talent agent show for
- 4:13plaid dinner jacket, it annoyed me even more. Only a minute, Mike
- 4:16scooch over a little bit. I'll sit down next to you. You want
- 4:18something, h Phil, not tell you how. I know. You keep
- 4:21licking your lips your handshakes, which reminds me take back your hand. I've
- 4:25had it, Mike. I want you to go to work, coming right
- 4:27now from this minute. You're on salad. Yeah, with expenses, hurt
- 4:30Phil. See my manster bars are growing colder. It's for Toby, Toby
- 4:34Drake. I'm putting you on the payroll. You'll remember Toby built you up
- 4:39to her, gave you a knock down to it. You got a season's
- 4:42pass with her. You'll remember, Toby. That's an a felly girl getting
- 4:45lonely for the McCoy again lonely of the new No, Mike, the girl's
- 4:47being threatened with phone calls with poisoned letters. You're doing real good, Phil,
- 4:51Mike, Mike, listen, listen close, because I'm going to almost
- 4:55whisper well. I said, they are repressing, but not so close.
- 4:58Somebody's going to chill her. Yeah, murder dead. Pobi's my client.
- 5:01That shouldn't happen to my client. Ha died from an anonymous splint. You
- 5:04tried, fel you really did a phone call? Boy? Will you take
- 5:09it here? Thanks? Jolly, Mike, gotta pay attention to me a
- 5:12gottle, I got monster bogs gardeners speaking. Snap it out. I'm busy,
- 5:17huh huh no, yeah, huh no. Yeah, So why don't
- 5:26you talk to me like that? When you talk to me, you're dynamite
- 5:29with monosyticals. Oh but now you'll believe skippic Pby's dead. No jokes,
- 5:33fell, I'm not in the mood. My boyfriend just called. I should
- 5:35be the first of all. I'll tell you she said dead. If you're
- 5:40kidding me, look, I'll by joting my cat. I'll put the top
- 5:43down. Mike. Sure, sure you wouldn't want to go to a funeral
- 5:46any other way? What's your fill? His way? There? You see?
- 6:06You see, Mike? What did I tell you? She did?
- 6:10Mike? Client shut up. The place was swarming with new things, new
- 6:15Chintz curtains, fresh upholstery, and Beverly Hills oriental knick knacks cluttering the Grand
- 6:20Rapids High Boy. There was a big overstuffed chair near the door that I
- 6:25remembered, and Phil climbed into it and put his chin in his hands to
- 6:28watch. I walked over to the three piece sectional. Toby Drake was lying
- 6:34there, her hand trailing down on the floor. I couldn't see her face
- 6:39until the big man stood up. Somebody wrapped that black silk stocking too tight
- 6:42around her neck? You know her, Mike, Yeah, I knew her.
- 6:45When she looked better, I liked it. She laughed at my jokes.
- 6:48You wrapped the stocking. You only asked because you're a cop, Hunt
- 6:53Cooska. I only asked because if I were a cop, I had asked.
- 6:56Nicole came and said, good hire, because it was a dead girl
- 6:59named Toby Dren On the way down. I toyed with the name. Then
- 7:01I remembered she used to laugh at George jokes, and all of a suddenly
- 7:04you're here. Why ask him? What is it? Something they have around
- 7:10town? An agent? He's Toby's he's an agent. I got a look,
- 7:15you're an agent. Eh? Well no, well, well let me

- 7:32and me sit there at Mason's. Sure time the phone was brought over.
- 7:36The man on the other rend says it's Roy Fulton, and he says his
- 7:40girlfriends said, honest time I've broken up about this. Well, no,
- 7:45well, well you wrap the stocking agent way Malone, Casker Way Malone.
- 7:49Agents only kill other agents. Thanks a lot, Mike. I'll jot it
- 7:54down on the book. You've been hired, Mike. I was, and
- 7:57I don't know if I'm still working. You'll work all the way, Mike,
- 8:01find out for me who killed my client? Polly. Oh, you're
- 8:03hired though, these guys employ you, huh like cross guy. I got
- 8:07a crumbing license and I'm in a crumby business because people sneak up dark alleys.
- 8:11Because people hate people, rob people, strangle. That's where my money
- 8:15comes from, because people do all those things. What do you want me
- 8:16to do? Apologize for earning a bucket? You want me to crawl?
- 8:20Or maybe you just bow low and us so you can pat me on top
- 8:22of the head and say, oh, now, Mike on mine. Yeah,
- 8:26where's her boyfriend? He's in the bedroom. He's a guy, but
- 8:28the name of Roy Fulton. He hardly said a word to me. Maybe
- 8:31you're not his type. Well go talk to him, Mike, God,
- 8:33come him. It's okay that you should talk the way. I love you
- 8:37to the death and bread and hype myself in reach and feelings. How they
- 8:43go on, go on? I like it. Who you? I'm Mike
- 8:48McCoy. I'm a criminal investigator. Toby's dead. She was murdered, mister

- 9:20my life, and if God choosed, I couldn't get through to him anymore.
- 9:30The poetry he spotted and stood between us in his own way. Mister
- 9:33Fulton was grieving, so I got out of the place. They ad a
- 9:37fascinating twenty minutes on the center lane of Peko Boulevard, getting bared by the
- 9:41pedestrians and the swarms of cars on both sides of me. The parking lots
- 9:45had just hung their fifty cents still closing signs when I drove up to the
- 9:48office building on Olive under the corner of being her in a few reminiscences about
- 9:52Toby Drake. Toby a kid who had once won a title, something like
- 9:56mister Donegal, Tweed and Patterson, New Jersey Spencer's paid to Hollywood, shake
- 10:01hands with a size lunch at the derby, A nice kid, a pretty

- 13:35been looking for you. You're taking my money. You don't even call me
- 13:37on the telephone. You know a girl named Stella Martin Felsy. Yeah,
- 13:43what you got to do with he? He's done? Do you know her?
- 13:46Felsey? A couple of weeks ago ago, come in my office,
- 13:48Stella Martin, please that I should put her on my clients list only no
- 13:50policy, you know what I mean? The soother two things face. I
- 13:54took her home. It's all the way to West chest I've never been to
- 13:56West Chess and make it come true, hard Felsy. It was just nine
- 14:03o'clock when Agent Phil let me off in front of a redwood frame house in
- 14:05Westchester. Then he suddenly remembered he had to pick up a client at the
- 14:09airport, and speedy Ville gardener game to the corps, went back into the
- 14:13tracic again. The walk up of the house was lined with rose pries carefully
- 14:18tended, and on every fourth one there was a road, but there was
- 14:22only one doorbell, so I knew just what to do. You wound up
- 14:31Stella Martin. Did she live here? Go who? Mike McCoy investigations.
- 14:37You've got a cud, says that, let's go inside. Asked you gotta
- 14:41cud, just show mismus Martin here, no cud. If they say,
- 14:45yeah, she's here, then what happened? I said? Inside? Now
- 14:48where is she? I'm glad you pushed me. Now I got a reason
- 14:52why. No. When I opened my eyes, the guy was still.
- 15:00Are all seven feet on them? Ain't gonna take each other, ain't gonna
- 15:03take me? This time? I played at brainy. I peeped first it
- 15:11was gone. I got to my feet. I cut to my feet,
- 15:15fell down, and finally made it over to the hallway where there should have
- 15:18been a bathroom and a towel and some water. The thing that stopped me
- 15:22was the girl in the Negligee. He was sitting on the floor against the
- 15:26wall. She was blonde and her head was turned to one side, as
- 15:30though she was wondering about me. There was a stocking tied around her throat,
- 15:35and she was dead. And I'll back to the McCoy starring Howard duff
- 16:06I didn't know whether I'd been out for a few minutes or a few days.
- 16:10I decided on the minutes, because the girl's body was still warm and
- 16:12death hadn't taken charge long enough to wipe the pudding us out of her face.
- 16:18I'd seen her a couple of times long ago, and the jungle pictures
- 16:21spliced between the main feature and the newsrail. The girl in the fatis who
- 16:25gets chased by the lion Stella Martin. I stopped trying to convince myself it
- 16:30wasn't real. It was real, all right, and I didn't need the
- 16:33pounding on the door to knock it into my head. I didn't need Cosca
- 16:37either, but I had him. What is this, Mike? You on
- 16:41a rampage? You want to know what happened? Or you want to be
- 16:44a big man. Just be gentle with me. That's all I want you
- 16:47to do, Mike, fifteen minutes ago is in a warm bed. Just
- 16:49be gentle. I got slugged a man seven feet tall in a black leather
- 16:53jacket. Look, Mike. I spent five hours questioning Roy Fulton about the
- 17:00murder of his girlfriend Toby Nothing. He quoted poetry, and I climbed into
- 17:04this warm bed and I was sleeping fine, and Sergeant Heard called it seems
- 17:08someone phoned in this head this to Sergeant heard. You were saying, what,
- 17:14Mike, she's in the hallway, prompted up against the wall. Yes
- 17:22she is. She's young, and she's strangled, and her name's Stella Martin.
- 17:26You want to clear it up for me. You want to listen about
- 17:27a guy in a black leather jacket, seven feet tall, yeah, seven
- 17:32feet tall. Find him that shouldn't be tough for a shot fellow like you.
- 17:34Now, don't be sour on me, Mike. You took some lumps
- 17:37in m You see this kid, what this holding something in her hand?
- 17:49Well now, well, well read it, Mike. Read what it says
- 17:55on the paper. That would be another one tomorrow, McCoy. I don't
- 17:57one tomorrow, McCoy. McCoy. Well, now, what makes me so
- 18:03popular, Cosca? Why doesn't it say your name? Why doesn't it say
- 18:06sergeant hurt? Because it says McCoy, Because it says the name of a
- 18:10guy I stumble over when I get out of a warm bed. Because you
- 18:12know things you're not telling me, and you're not gonna tell me because you
- 18:15think it's clever to obstruck justice. What am I going to do with you,
- 18:22Mike? Take you downtown and switch you what you be a hero because
- 18:26you won't tell me what you know. Get out of here, Mike,
- 18:32Get out and land in my room unless Pomase pulled the Murphy bed down,
- 18:42adjust the beaten frame of the broken spring, and lulla by yourself to sleep
- 18:47with? What makes two girls dead from a pair of silk stockings? What
- 18:51made Stella Martin and Toby Drake so close they had to hug death in the
- 18:53same way? And the next morning, Saturday, thrown out of sleep by
- 18:57the sign of the mocking birds framing the name of Phil Gardner, Agent I
- 19:03told him to button their bills and went there. Girls dropped like flies where
- 19:06you walk McCoy tring a gyp sheet into my girl in the cashier's cage.
- 19:10You'll pay you off fish a goodbye for the firm. She'll also give you
- 19:12all the messages from Mabel we've been taking for you. What's the matter?
- 19:17Fell? Only yesterday we were in love you and I? So what does
- 19:19it buy me? Allows you ride to a place where the morning paper says
- 19:22a husband dead call her by a name, Phil because you must have called
- 19:26it by a name lots of time, Stella Martin, let me hear you
- 19:30say it. Keep away from me, like I told you, I hardly
- 19:33knew the danger. Say a name, Fell, She's dead. The least

- 27:18on, I'm right in back of it. Get out of this thing,
- 27:22cramp. I'm staying. I've been telling you. I've been waiting. Get
- 27:34out of, Get out of all right? Not park Parker, say help
- 27:38me. You're crazy, Stark. You think I killed us. I couldn't
- 27:44kill so she was sad when I got there where she said, yeah,
- 27:48yeah, sure she was, and you'll come in. I went crazy.
- 27:51I wanted to kill something to say even why are following me? Of course
- 27:55you're a Thomas. If you get to the killer, I want a pace
- 27:56of him. I didn't kill spell us. You've gotta believe you've got it,
- 28:06Peggy. What's the matter? He was in the mirror, all right?
- 28:12His reflection in the crazy rippled mirror of the front house. Roy Fulton's
- 28:17reflection long and thinned that he'd been squeezed together. This time there was no
- 28:22poetry, just a gun. I called Peggy down on the floor with the
- 28:27crop scattered, and there was nothing in Fulton's way. I was lucky.
- 28:38My shot got to him and he kept coming and it caught up with him,
- 28:44but he didn't fall. Fult, Why they excuse m Tessa? Me,
- 29:33m m M M homa is for it? Remember me? You wanted
- 29:45me for the talking pictures. Yeah, not Mike m oh, you're starting
- 29:51the paper. That's right, Roy Fulton. His wife had been killed in
- 29:55the automobile ACTIONNT me blamed those three girls for it. He was de my
- 30:00office. Rocket, baby, baby, miss Ford, what are you doing
- 30:04tonight? A ballet dancer instead of me? But a ballet dancer? This
- 30:12Ford, the Fords, no face, Hello Mabel. This is the McCoy.
- 30:40The McCoy, starring Howard Duff, is written, directed, and produced
- 30:44by David Friedkin and Morton Fine, with music composed and conducted by Walter Schumann.
- 30:59This has been an BC Hollywood Program Department presentation. Welcome back, Well
- 31:06this was a good program. David Freakin and more at Fine with Walter Schuman
- 31:12doing the music, Howard Duff as the star, and even Sheldon Leonard as
- 31:18the police officer well, which is definitely it's definitely a bit of a change.
- 31:27Usually plays a kind of a gangster on another on the other side of
- 31:33the law, but did well as the hard boiled police officer. Howard Duff
- 31:40in this role kind of a little bit different from his Sam Spade characterization.
- 31:48I thought the McCoy was, maybe I'm a little warmer, more sympathetic character
- 31:55in that regards Sam Spade, a lot more, could be a lot more
- 32:04ruthless, a little software in this one, and I think that that worked.
- 32:08The reason the program wasn't picked up was because of Duff's political problems at
- 32:15the time still not resolved, or to be several years until they were so
- 32:20that he would be accepted as an actor again. But he was still kind
- 32:24of on the outs of the point here with some rumors that turned out not
- 32:29to be correct of communist ties in the midst of the investigations of the fifties.
- 32:37This scramp would be reused on yours truly, Johnny Knoller on January sixteenth,
- 32:45nineteen fifty three. It would become the starlit matter which we applied for
- 32:49you. On November twenty five of two thousand and eleven, and this was
- 32:54in my mind one of the better, that was one of the better John
- 32:58Lynn episodes of Yours truly any dollar. But that said, I still don't
- 33:05think it was quite as good as the original audition for the McCoy with Howard
- 33:12Duff. So an interesting series that could have been quite entertaining. Well all
- 33:19right, well that will actually do it for today. We will be back
- 33:22tomorrow with Yours truly, Johnny Dowler. In the meanwhile, Sandra commins to
