- 0:00Hello, everyone. I am Mariah Muhammad with Becker
- 0:02Health care. Thank you so much for joining
- 0:04us on this podcast.
- 0:05We are thrilled to be joined today by
- 0:07Andy Flanagan, Ceo of Iris Telehealth. Andy, thank
- 0:10you so much for being here today. How
- 0:12are you?
- 0:13Doing well, Mariah. Great to be together today.
- 0:15Yes. Of course, fo Today, we will discuss
- 0:18how health systems are transforming
- 0:20their behavioral health service lines. So with that,
- 0:23let's dive right into our conversation. So, Andy,
- 0:25the first question I really wanted to ask
- 0:27you. What are you hearing about health system
- 0:29leaders as their biggest challenges to providing
- 0:32effective quality behavior health care to their communities?
- 0:35At
- 0:36The biggest challenges is, how do I connect
- 0:38the lessons learned from digital
- 0:40transformation in other areas of the health system?
- 0:43And apply that to behavioral health.
- 0:46Got it. Yeah. Yeah. That completely makes sense.
- 0:48Are there any critical components to transforming
- 0:52behavioral health service lines in a way that's
- 0:54financially sustainable and scalable?
- 0:56Yes. There are several very clear pillars that
- 0:59have to be addressed.
- 1:00First of all, integrate behavioral health at the
- 1:03service line level
- 1:05requires an enterprise wide approach.
- 1:08Most health systems and hospitals are solving this
- 1:11in a piece basis based on
- 1:14sites of care, emergency department.
- 1:17Inpatient, than outpatient.
- 1:19We need to think about a holistic
- 1:21approach to behavioral health. Otherwise, the money will
- 1:23not flow the right way No money, no
- 1:26mission. So that's it, the the key element
- 1:28is a top down approach.
- 1:31Yeah. That completely makes... Thank you for giving
- 1:34us those those pillars.
- 1:36Can you share some examples of how hospitals
- 1:38have successfully adjusted, then their strategy to better
- 1:41meet the behavioral of health needs of their
- 1:43community?
- 1:44Yes.
- 1:45Many hospitals and health systems have focused on
- 1:47the emergency department. There's significant boarding and that
- 1:50happens due to the behavioral health concerns.
- 1:53And they're just aren't enough beds in our
- 1:55communities. That's not gonna change. Or an up
- 1:57psychiatrists,
- 1:59and the Eds are active on the nights
- 2:00and weekends,
- 2:02very difficult times to have people waiting on
- 2:04hand.
- 2:05So number 1, they've leveraged technology,
- 2:07both virtual channels like iris provides and many,
- 2:10many others,
- 2:11as well as technologies.
- 2:13More importantly, where we've moved beyond that area
- 2:17is to a proactive approach,
- 2:19integrating with primary care,
- 2:21starting to bring resources into the community and
- 2:23you see that in coordination of care models,
- 2:25behavioral health integration models, plenty of companies working
- 2:28there. And so
- 2:30thinking about
- 2:31the integration in the community and in primary
- 2:34care as a way to solve the issue
- 2:36in the emergency department is not intuitive.
- 2:39Those are directly connected.
- 2:42Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. That makes a lot of
- 2:44sense. How do you see behavioral health fitting
- 2:47into...
- 2:48Value based care strategies for health systems.
- 2:51There is no way that value based care
- 2:53will be successful over the next 3 to
- 2:554 years without... Incorporating behavioral health.
- 2:58We have done a fantastic job of understanding
- 3:01chronic care, poly chronic patients, high utilize,
- 3:05plenty of navigation companies working with payers, self
- 3:08insured entity companies have grown.
- 3:11And so the only way value based care
- 3:13will be successful.
- 3:14In this next tran. So every year, there's
- 3:17a new baseline.
- 3:18Right? Every year we get better at this
- 3:22integrating behavioral health is this last frontier. And
- 3:24so over the next 3 years you will
- 3:26see, and I see this today. The number
- 3:28of partners that I speak to people that
- 3:30are calling us trying to help. Figure out
- 3:32how we can help them.
- 3:34Behavioral health has to be a part of
- 3:35those patient journeys because they're a part of
- 3:37the patient journey.
- 3:38The average cost of a patient with a
- 3:40behavioral
- 3:41authentication is 2.2
- 3:43times higher
- 3:44than an individual without a behavioral health authentication.
- 3:47So
- 3:48Better or worse, we're gonna all lean in
- 3:50a behavioral health if we wanna be successful
- 3:52value based care.
- 3:54Absolutely. I absolutely like I I think I
- 3:55definitely do agree you that value based care
- 3:57cannot not happen.
- 3:58If we do not do the behavioral health.
- 4:01Before I let you go, Andy the last
- 4:02thing I really want to ask you, what
- 4:05what role do you think
- 4:06virtual care plays in the future of behavioral
- 4:09health care.
- 4:11It's an absolute requirement. You know, it's it's
- 4:13it's kind of like saying that we're gonna
- 4:15use computers
- 4:16but not phones.
- 4:18What why why would we ever think that
- 4:20in today's world? We wouldn't. It's an extension.
- 4:23Virtual would
- 4:25physical only, not virtual. And I'm not just
- 4:28talking about services that we provide, you know,
- 4:30Iris telehealth health as a modality.
- 4:34Virtual care is proven its role. The patients,
- 4:37the family
- 4:38patients, the care advocates, the cost of care,
- 4:41all the practical reasons.
- 4:43For someone not to view the integration of
- 4:46virtual and physical as the endgame
- 4:49is somebody that is stuck in their own
- 4:51modality.
- 4:52It's just not the way this world's is
- 4:53gonna finish
- 4:54this story.
- 4:56So...
- 4:57And and we're seeing great bright lights there
- 4:59in terms of total cost of care,
- 5:01and sustainable reimbursement,
- 5:03it's not easy,
- 5:05but it is here to say.
- 5:08Yeah. Thank you so much for giving us
- 5:09that insight. And, Andy, thank you so much
- 5:11for joining me today for this amazing discussion.
- 5:14It's absolutely been a pleasure speaking with you,
