- 0:00Speaker 1: What's going on. I hope you're doing well. This is
- 0:02Speaker 1: Jeff here, and I wanted to let you know that
- 0:04Speaker 1: we've recorded this podcast episode on Wednesday, November thirteenth, twenty
- 0:08Speaker 1: twenty four. So by the time you hear this, some
- 0:10Speaker 1: things may have changed here or there, but we hope
- 0:12Speaker 1: you enjoyed the show. Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table
- 0:48Speaker 1: podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show
- 0:51Speaker 1: in the world. That's right over eleven and a half
- 0:53Speaker 1: year strong, and we got a great show coming your
- 0:55Speaker 1: way this week, a bit of a different show. We
- 0:58Speaker 1: have two interviews that we're gonna be into on this episode.
- 1:02Speaker 1: First and foremost, we're gonna be getting into some college
- 1:04Speaker 1: football talk for you who do follow college football, if
- 1:08Speaker 1: you don't follow college football too much, the end of
- 1:11Speaker 1: the season is right around the corner, and the college
- 1:13Speaker 1: football Playoff is going to be here before we know it.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I am extremely excited to not only learned about find
- 1:20Speaker 1: out what teams are going to be in the college
- 1:23Speaker 1: football Playoff. There's going to be twelve teams, but how
- 1:27Speaker 1: this new bracket in college football, in this postseason college
- 1:32Speaker 1: football era, how it's going to bring more people into
- 1:34Speaker 1: the fold perhaps how it's going to bring those college
- 1:36Speaker 1: football outliers into perhaps really enjoying the college football product.
- 1:41Speaker 1: We're going to be getting into that with our guest
- 1:43Speaker 1: this week. We're gonna be talking some Penn State. With
- 1:46Speaker 1: our guests, We're gonna be talking about Oregon and just
- 1:49Speaker 1: the state of college football overall. Can't wait for that discussion.
- 1:53Speaker 1: It's going to be a real great one. And then
- 1:55Speaker 1: from there, we got another great guest we're bringing on
- 1:58Speaker 1: this week to talk about this Philadelphia Flyers team and
- 2:01Speaker 1: how this season is going. Look, folks, it was rough
- 2:04Speaker 1: for the Flyers right out of the gate, but over
- 2:06Speaker 1: the past few games, we've been seeing some really good
- 2:08Speaker 1: stuff from this team in various aspects of you know,
- 2:12Speaker 1: what they've been doing on the ice. So I can't
- 2:14Speaker 1: wait to get into where this team is at during
- 2:17Speaker 1: this rebuild, what we've been seeing from certain talent, and
- 2:20Speaker 1: really what it means to the future of this Flyers
- 2:23Speaker 1: team here during their twenty twenty four twenty twenty five season. Again,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we got two great guests coming your way this week.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Let's now get to our college football talk this week.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Great discussion coming your way joining us this week to
- 2:37Speaker 1: get into some college football talk, some Penn State talk.
- 2:40Speaker 1: What is going to be happening with the college football
- 2:43Speaker 1: playoff which is right around the corner. It's hard to
- 2:46Speaker 1: believe that it's almost here. It's gonna be fun seeing
- 2:48Speaker 1: what the top twelve teams in the nation are going
- 2:51Speaker 1: to be doing. But we've got with us from Fox
- 2:54Speaker 1: Sports Radio of the Lehigh Valley. We've got our good
- 2:57Speaker 1: friend Mike Raymond. Mike, Buddy, how you doing.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Man, Jeff. It's a beautiful sunny day in Pennsylvania and
- 3:03Speaker 2: Penn State doesn't play, so my anxiety lower.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Exactly exactly, Dude, what a season it's been for Penn State,
- 3:09Speaker 1: quite frankly, and I wanted to start off talking about
- 3:12Speaker 1: this team kind of where the season is with them
- 3:16Speaker 1: at this time. But I want to mention one football
- 3:19Speaker 1: program to get this discussion started with regard to Penn State,
- 3:23Speaker 1: and that's Ohio State. I swear, Mike, we talk about
- 3:27Speaker 1: it all the time whenever you jump on, and I'm
- 3:29Speaker 1: always so grateful to have you on. But like for
- 3:32Speaker 1: the rest of my life, I may not see Penn
- 3:34Speaker 1: State beat Ohio State. I'm not kidd I mean, I'm
- 3:37Speaker 1: not kidding, and of course, I'm kidding. They have to
- 3:39Speaker 1: beat them at some point down the road. But that's
- 3:41Speaker 1: like how I'm feeling right now at this point. It's
- 3:44Speaker 1: so it's so distressing every single year they can't get
- 3:48Speaker 1: over the homp with this team. I mean, so many
- 3:50Speaker 1: of us thought that it was going to be tough
- 3:52Speaker 1: for them, tough for Penn State, I should say, to
- 3:54Speaker 1: beat Ohio State this year. But we thought this would
- 3:56Speaker 1: be the year that they could actually do it, just
- 3:58Speaker 1: based on, you know, the talent that's on this Penn
- 4:00Speaker 1: State team. And of course it didn't happen. It was
- 4:03Speaker 1: the Nitny Lyons first loss of the season. And I'm
- 4:06Speaker 1: still feeling kind of haunted by this game. I don't
- 4:08Speaker 1: necessarily know if the Penn State football program, the players,
- 4:11Speaker 1: the coaches are feeling haunted by I kind of am
- 4:14Speaker 1: in a way still. So I'm wondering, how have you
- 4:16Speaker 1: been thinking about that loss for Penn State and man,
- 4:19Speaker 1: what it means for the season too.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good question, and you think back to
- 4:23Speaker 2: how this season aligned, right, you miss Michigan, you miss
- 4:26Speaker 2: Oregon on the schedule, and you miss Indiana. But no
- 4:30Speaker 2: one really thought that was going to be a big
- 4:31Speaker 2: deal up until the recent recent weeks. But yeah, you know,
- 4:35Speaker 2: it kind of all lined up. And then as closer
- 4:37Speaker 2: the game got, he kept hearing that oh Ohio State's
- 4:40Speaker 2: on their third string left tackle and that might be
- 4:42Speaker 2: a real advantage for Abdul Carter and getting the pass rush.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And what you saw when they came out was like,
- 4:47Speaker 2: oh my god. They marched right down the field. They
- 4:49Speaker 2: looked like they were finally up for this game. They
- 4:51Speaker 2: had a good game plan. They settled for a field goal,
- 4:53Speaker 2: but people kind of forgot about that because the very
- 4:56Speaker 2: first possession for Ohio State was a pick six, and
- 4:58Speaker 2: you're feeling really good about it, but the offense was
- 5:01Speaker 2: absent the rest of the game, and and you kind
- 5:05Speaker 2: of see the real discrepancy and talent, you know, I
- 5:08Speaker 2: guess you can say, you know, there's there's there's great
- 5:10Speaker 2: talent at Penn State, and there's great talent that has
- 5:13Speaker 2: developed at Penn State, but there's just that incremental next
- 5:16Speaker 2: level of talent that Ohio State and programs like that
- 5:19Speaker 2: have a lot of SEC programs, including Alabama and Georgia,
- 5:22Speaker 2: you're going to see that next level incremental percentage points
- 5:26Speaker 2: of guys who can just get it done at a
- 5:28Speaker 2: different level. Uh, And that was really the biggest difference
- 5:31Speaker 2: in this game. You know, the final scoreboard probably doesn't
- 5:34Speaker 2: indicate how lopsided it was because it's a seven point
- 5:38Speaker 2: loss for Penn State. But you know, if Ohio State
- 5:42Speaker 2: doesn't fumble going into the end zone, or if you know,
- 5:44Speaker 2: Jeremiah Smith doesn't slip on that deep pass and finds
- 5:48Speaker 2: that ball, and we're talking probably a two touchdown a difference,
- 5:51Speaker 2: you know, at the end of the game.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And it felt like a blow It kind of felt
- 5:54Speaker 1: like a blowout to me. It's watching it, you know,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I mean, like you said, after what that interception on
- 5:59Speaker 1: Ohio State its first possession of the game, I'm thinking,
- 6:02Speaker 1: oh my gosh, momentum is completely on Penn State side. Here.
- 6:06Speaker 1: They're going to keep this momentum at least for another
- 6:08Speaker 1: forty five minutes here of this game or whatever it was,
- 6:10Speaker 1: you know, fifty minutes of the game. And it just
- 6:13Speaker 1: went completely off the ledge there.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Well, and then it comes back and circles back around
- 6:18Speaker 2: and somebody has to take a blame, and everybody's pointing
- 6:21Speaker 2: fingers at Franklin and I came on Fox Sports Radio
- 6:24Speaker 2: the very next Monday, and I said, listen, I'm very
- 6:26Speaker 2: disappointed in the student base and the people who were
- 6:30Speaker 2: booing the student athletes, And honestly, it was the student
- 6:33Speaker 2: athletes who walked off during the alma mater, obviously that
- 6:36Speaker 2: they were frustrated. Everyone was frustrated and boiled over with
- 6:39Speaker 2: Franklin going at it with a fan and can compound
- 6:41Speaker 2: that with whoever that Jabroni was in the parking lot
- 6:44Speaker 2: mouthing off the jalth. Yes, it was not a good
- 6:48Speaker 2: look for Penn State in the community. A proud fan
- 6:52Speaker 2: base and alumni base the largest in the nation. But
- 6:54Speaker 2: that's the one thing that I kept hearing after it. Yeah,
- 6:57Speaker 2: you're the largest alumni brace in the nation. But compete
- 7:00Speaker 2: the next level of college football now in twenty twenty four.
- 7:03Speaker 2: You need to step it up. And their NIL program
- 7:05Speaker 2: isn't isn't what it needs to be to compete. If
- 7:08Speaker 2: you want to say that you want to beat these
- 7:09Speaker 2: top five, top ten teams, you have to contribute at
- 7:13Speaker 2: a different level, or they have to raise that money
- 7:15Speaker 2: at a different level, because that's what it takes. Everything's
- 7:17Speaker 2: been made about what Ohio State did in the print
- 7:19Speaker 2: transfer port of this offseason. One of the best defensive towns,
- 7:22Speaker 2: Judkins from from miss olemess who came up as was
- 7:26Speaker 2: one of the running backs that kind of beat up
- 7:27Speaker 2: Penn State late in that game. That's kind of what
- 7:30Speaker 2: it takes. You need to have the resources to go
- 7:32Speaker 2: out and get your team a little bit better. Now
- 7:35Speaker 2: everyone's pointing James Franklin three and seventeen versus top ten
- 7:38Speaker 2: programs and is eleven years at Penn State. Well, you
- 7:40Speaker 2: know what, Joe Paturno was one to nine versus top
- 7:42Speaker 2: five programs his first end game, So no one wants
- 7:45Speaker 2: to talk about that. So it's not like Penn State
- 7:48Speaker 2: has definitely been one of the blue chips of college football,
- 7:51Speaker 2: don't get me wrong. But there is also a next
- 7:54Speaker 2: level of things, and I think Franklin is on the
- 7:57Speaker 2: road and I am going to continue to defend James
- 7:59Speaker 2: Franklin because of what he's been able to do for
- 8:01Speaker 2: the program, bringing in the resources, aligning him with himself
- 8:05Speaker 2: of the administration, getting that Beaver Stadium project underway, getting
- 8:08Speaker 2: the last building up to code. These are all things
- 8:11Speaker 2: that need to happen in twenty twenty four college football,
- 8:13Speaker 2: and they're happening behind the scenes, and I think they're
- 8:16Speaker 2: right there that the season isn't over. And I know
- 8:18Speaker 2: we're going to get into that in just a second.
- 8:20Speaker 2: The season isn't over, So let's see what you can
- 8:22Speaker 2: get out of twenty twenty four. And I think I
- 8:24Speaker 2: was a little bit more. I felt a little bit
- 8:26Speaker 2: better out things. After I saw the final score from
- 8:29Speaker 2: the Washington game.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I got to say, Mike, I'm glad to hear you
- 8:32Speaker 1: say that you're going to keep defending James Franklin. I
- 8:34Speaker 1: am too. My college buddies, who you know, two of
- 8:37Speaker 1: them are members of this podcast platform, my co host
- 8:40Speaker 1: Lennon Eric you know, both went to Penn State as well,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and you know they're almost done with frank They're basically
- 8:47Speaker 1: done with Franklin at this point. And we talk about
- 8:50Speaker 1: the conundrum that is James Franklin somebody that has taken
- 8:53Speaker 1: this program to another level, yes, as you were just saying,
- 8:57Speaker 1: not to the elite next level, but has kept this
- 9:00Speaker 1: program relevant, has kept this program making money for the
- 9:04Speaker 1: college and the university at the end of the day.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I mean, from an athletic program standpoint, that's that's what
- 9:10Speaker 1: the boosters want, that's what you know, what I mean,
- 9:12Speaker 1: that's what the athletic program inevitably wants is making more money,
- 9:15Speaker 1: and they continue to do it time and time again.
- 9:17Speaker 1: There's winning seasons time and time again. So it's like,
- 9:20Speaker 1: where is that line with regard to James Franklin where
- 9:23Speaker 1: you see success. There's definite success, but it's not at
- 9:27Speaker 1: the elite level that some of us really want. But
- 9:30Speaker 1: I feel that this season there's the possibility for us
- 9:33Speaker 1: to get to another level, depending on how this college
- 9:35Speaker 1: football Playoff manifests itself.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Still opportunity there on the horizon. But here's the other
- 9:41Speaker 2: thing too, Like, as much as it is frustrating to
- 9:44Speaker 2: lose to Ohio State and from time to time Michigan,
- 9:47Speaker 2: I hate when people lump in that Michigan argument because
- 9:49Speaker 2: they have beaten Michigan recent in recent years, but I
- 9:53Speaker 2: will say the fact of the matter is, you know,
- 9:55Speaker 2: they're beating everybody else and there could be worse things.
- 9:58Speaker 2: You know, I think I saw the twenty eight to
- 10:00Speaker 2: zero against everybody else by Ohio State in Michigan. Okay,
- 10:03Speaker 2: I get that it's still frustrating, but like, yeah, he
- 10:07Speaker 2: could be losing some of those games, or he could
- 10:08Speaker 2: be disappointing in some of those those games that are
- 10:10Speaker 2: perceived as bigger games, especially when those other teams that's
- 10:14Speaker 2: in the expanding Big Ten, Right, everyone's going to have
- 10:16Speaker 2: to claw their way to the top. There's no more divisions.
- 10:18Speaker 2: It's the top two teams. Like you have to make
- 10:20Speaker 2: sure that you're beating those teams in the front of you.
- 10:22Speaker 2: And Penn State, Yeah, they're not beating Ohio State consistently,
- 10:25Speaker 2: but they're beating everybody else below them, right, And I
- 10:27Speaker 2: think that needs to be talked about just as much
- 10:29Speaker 2: as the frustration boils over with not beating Ohio State.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Absolutely. Look, we've seen some good things from this Penn
- 10:34Speaker 1: State football program this season. We've seen some things that
- 10:37Speaker 1: have been frustrating as well. And that's where I wanted
- 10:39Speaker 1: to go next with the conversation here with regard to
- 10:42Speaker 1: Penn State talking about disappointments and even positive surprises. So
- 10:46Speaker 1: two part question here will get into the disappointment aspect
- 10:49Speaker 1: of this team thus far this season. Well, what has
- 10:51Speaker 1: been for you, Mike, the biggest disappointment on this team
- 10:55Speaker 1: as we look towards the College Football Playoff? What's that
- 10:58Speaker 1: disappointment for you?
- 11:00Speaker 2: Yeah, It's disappointing, but it's not unexpected, you know, I
- 11:03Speaker 2: think it's got to be pointing to the play of
- 11:05Speaker 2: the wide receivers. I think it's tough you lose you know,
- 11:09Speaker 2: KeAndre Lambert Smith this offseason, as much as you don't
- 11:12Speaker 2: think he's that big of an impact, he's having a
- 11:13Speaker 2: decent year at Auburn. You know, you're missing out on
- 11:16Speaker 2: like that top end guy that can open up a defense.
- 11:19Speaker 2: And you saw it firsthand against Ohio State, where was
- 11:24Speaker 2: streu Allery supposed to throw the ball and there was
- 11:27Speaker 2: nothing open. And that really speaks to the ability of
- 11:31Speaker 2: the wide receivers that are on the roster. They have
- 11:33Speaker 2: really good wide receivers, but they don't have anyone elite.
- 11:35Speaker 2: They don't have a Jeremiah Smith, they don't have anybody
- 11:38Speaker 2: Tex Johnson out in Oregon, Like, they don't have that
- 11:40Speaker 2: big name wide receiver that's going to be able to
- 11:42Speaker 2: open things up for a quarterback like Drew Aller. And yeah,
- 11:45Speaker 2: the numbers were like underwhelming for Aler, but it could
- 11:47Speaker 2: have been a lot worse because he really did not
- 11:50Speaker 2: have anywhere to throw it. He was throwing it into coverage.
- 11:53Speaker 2: One of them got picked in the end zone. But
- 11:54Speaker 2: realistically that that's an incompletion any other time, you know,
- 11:58Speaker 2: nine times out of ten, and even down the stretch,
- 12:00Speaker 2: he was forcing balls to warrant. He had to force
- 12:03Speaker 2: balls into coverage because they were not open, right, And
- 12:05Speaker 2: that that to me, is the biggest thing that was
- 12:08Speaker 2: holding this team back from being great this year. They
- 12:11Speaker 2: need they need to find somebody that was going to
- 12:14Speaker 2: emerge as the number one wide receiver. You thought maybe
- 12:16Speaker 2: it might be Julian Fleming, And the biggest thing was,
- 12:19Speaker 2: up until last week against Washington, there was no wide
- 12:22Speaker 2: receiver that scored a touchdown a Big Ten play. Julian
- 12:25Speaker 2: Fleming the transfer scored the first touchdown in Big ten
- 12:29Speaker 2: play by wide receiver, and it came against the watch.
- 12:33Speaker 2: I forget. It was right before halftime or right after halftime,
- 12:35Speaker 2: and you know, come on, like that just can't happen.
- 12:38Speaker 2: It can't happen. Yeah, the wide receivers to me are
- 12:42Speaker 2: the I don't want to say disappointing, but if that's
- 12:45Speaker 2: the area that they need to grow if they want
- 12:48Speaker 2: to be competing at the top level of the Big.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Ten, absolutely well, on the flip side of the coin,
- 12:52Speaker 1: I'm wondering your thoughts are in terms of the biggest
- 12:55Speaker 1: positive surprise on this team as we're looking toward you know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: with this all with the playoff season is going to
- 13:02Speaker 1: be with the college football playoff. What's a bit what's
- 13:04Speaker 1: the biggest positive surprise that you've seen from Penn State?
- 13:08Speaker 2: You know, I liked it. There's two I'm going to
- 13:10Speaker 2: answer with. I'm going to like. I like the development
- 13:12Speaker 2: of what Abdul Carter's been able to do moving from
- 13:14Speaker 2: linebacker to defensive end, obviously to improve his draft stock. Yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 2: that's been a big deal. I will say there has
- 13:20Speaker 2: been some things that I've not liked about what Abdul
- 13:22Speaker 2: Carter has done this year. We know, specifically get a
- 13:25Speaker 2: lot of off side penalties because he's going to be aggressive,
- 13:27Speaker 2: he wants to do wants to be make at that
- 13:29Speaker 2: first step beat the offensive line and gets to the quarterback.
- 13:32Speaker 2: So if he can clean that up down the stretch,
- 13:34Speaker 2: especially in big games, you can't have those penalties happen
- 13:36Speaker 2: in big games. But to me, the biggest thing in
- 13:39Speaker 2: terms of positives around this Penn State team is things
- 13:42Speaker 2: that we were looking for to develop this off season
- 13:45Speaker 2: that has actually come to fruition, the leadership quality qualities
- 13:48Speaker 2: of Drew Aller. Drew Aller and what he's been able
- 13:50Speaker 2: to do. You know, he was always looked at it's
- 13:52Speaker 2: not the most vocal guy. But I saw him pointing
- 13:55Speaker 2: to the scoreboard against Washington this past weekend. He's been
- 13:58Speaker 2: able to be vocal and that leader in the in
- 14:00Speaker 2: the huddle. You know, his drive against USC to keep
- 14:04Speaker 2: that game alive within reach on the road and you know,
- 14:08Speaker 2: say what you will about what USC is now, but
- 14:11Speaker 2: they were playing for everything at that moment going It
- 14:14Speaker 2: was a huge win. That kind of gets swept under
- 14:16Speaker 2: the rug. As much as you want to point to
- 14:18Speaker 2: the fact that James Franklin hasn't won any big games.
- 14:20Speaker 2: That was a huge game and they can scheme those
- 14:23Speaker 2: amazing players into great space. You saw it early in
- 14:26Speaker 2: the game, Pence, that's a quality Penn State went. But
- 14:29Speaker 2: Drew Aller was able to go in that game in
- 14:31Speaker 2: the coliseum, march down that field and have so much success.
- 14:35Speaker 2: And you know, I think that team, the team really
- 14:37Speaker 2: respects that especially you know, he throws three interceptions, but
- 14:40Speaker 2: no one really talks about it because they won that game.
- 14:43Speaker 2: So Drew Aller and his leadership. That to me is
- 14:45Speaker 2: the biggest positive to this point this year of Penn State.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Mike really quick with Drew Aller. The one thing that
- 14:50Speaker 1: has been striking for me this season with him is
- 14:54Speaker 1: not only how he's been able to develop. We've seen
- 14:57Speaker 1: tremendous development from last season twenty twenty three to where
- 15:00Speaker 1: he is now. Pocket management, his pocket presence, I think
- 15:04Speaker 1: has been so much better. And I think that goes
- 15:07Speaker 1: to show that he's coachable. He's incredibly coachable, and he's
- 15:12Speaker 1: able to adapt his own play things that he may
- 15:15Speaker 1: have been comfortable with his entire you know, his entire career,
- 15:18Speaker 1: going back to high school. He's been able to alter
- 15:21Speaker 1: some of that and he's a very coachable player. And
- 15:24Speaker 1: I think that's going to do well for him if
- 15:26Speaker 1: and when he does go to the NFL. I think
- 15:29Speaker 1: even besides the on the field play, it's it's his coachability.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's got a great new coach and offensive coordinator,
- 15:35Speaker 2: Andy Colton Naked you know what, he was one of
- 15:38Speaker 2: the names that kept getting brought up with the lack
- 15:40Speaker 2: of creativity the goal line stand and you know, I
- 15:43Speaker 2: think he is going to put that in the back
- 15:46Speaker 2: of his head and remember that and make sure he
- 15:48Speaker 2: grows from that as well as an offensive coordinator. But
- 15:51Speaker 2: you mentioned the coachability, Like, there's a lot of a
- 15:55Speaker 2: lot of things that go into this offense. We're actually
- 15:57Speaker 2: seeing motion, you know, that would be able to be
- 16:00Speaker 2: a big getting part of the year. A guy in
- 16:02Speaker 2: motion helped the guy in his pre snap read, and
- 16:05Speaker 2: then he's finding other guys he's mad, you know, whether
- 16:07Speaker 2: it be Ty Warren or you know Lea. And Cliffords
- 16:10Speaker 2: has had a couple of big games like he's he's
- 16:12Speaker 2: finding his guys in space and then like using his legs.
- 16:16Speaker 2: You know, he lost some weight in this offseason. He's
- 16:19Speaker 2: added some mobility to his game. You know, he's not
- 16:21Speaker 2: Michael Vick out there, but he certainly has the real
- 16:24Speaker 2: ability to tuck it and run and people have to
- 16:26Speaker 2: account for that, you know when they're scheming defensively against him.
- 16:29Speaker 2: So yeah, I like everything that he's done on the
- 16:31Speaker 2: field within between the ears. You know, he's certainly the
- 16:34Speaker 2: biggest positive. Yeah.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Absolutely, Well, great Penn State football talk with you there,
- 16:39Speaker 1: But I wanted to get into, you know, really what
- 16:41Speaker 1: we're going to be seeing around the corner here. With
- 16:43Speaker 1: regard to the college football playoff. You know, the one
- 16:46Speaker 1: thing we were talking about on this podcast platform and
- 16:48Speaker 1: on the show this past week is the upcoming playoff
- 16:53Speaker 1: and how the inevitable bracket is going to look like.
- 16:56Speaker 1: And I think it has the ability to bring in
- 16:58Speaker 1: more viewers and help more people understand the college football
- 17:02Speaker 1: experience overall. And I think I think the fact that
- 17:05Speaker 1: it's not just going to be college football powerhouses that
- 17:09Speaker 1: we've seen the past twenty thirty years. They're going to
- 17:12Speaker 1: have a real chance at potentially getting to the championship game.
- 17:17Speaker 1: And I think that is a real, you know, quote
- 17:19Speaker 1: win for college football overall. Mike, I'm wondering do you
- 17:22Speaker 1: feel the same way, And you know, what are your
- 17:24Speaker 1: thoughts on what this experience itself is going to be
- 17:28Speaker 1: for you know, possibly the you know, the college football
- 17:31Speaker 1: outlier fans. You know what might that be for them?
- 17:35Speaker 2: It's a perception that you have some skin in the game,
- 17:37Speaker 2: right Like I still maintain that there probably are only
- 17:41Speaker 2: about four or five teams that can actually win a
- 17:44Speaker 2: national title. It doesn't matter the system was broken. The
- 17:48Speaker 2: fact of the matter is there was five major power
- 17:50Speaker 2: conferences and there was only four slots, like why even
- 17:53Speaker 2: win your conference right like it's and for the teams
- 17:55Speaker 2: that were not Power five teams, you never had a
- 17:57Speaker 2: shot even if you went undefeated all up into Florida State.
- 18:00Speaker 2: And yet I understand injury played a factor in that
- 18:03Speaker 2: decision last year, and we get it, but like the
- 18:05Speaker 2: system was broken, there's no reason Florida State has been
- 18:08Speaker 2: in a tailspin ever since that moment, you know, so
- 18:11Speaker 2: you know, it certainly gives the perception that you can
- 18:15Speaker 2: still play for a title, and for Penn State fans
- 18:18Speaker 2: that that means the world. You know, how close have
- 18:20Speaker 2: we been in the past couple of years that we
- 18:22Speaker 2: would have been able to be in this postseason? Now
- 18:23Speaker 2: what we won the national championship, the net remains to
- 18:26Speaker 2: be seen. But you know, I still think that you know,
- 18:29Speaker 2: the Boise States of the world, the Byus of the world,
- 18:31Speaker 2: like being able to have some skin in the game,
- 18:34Speaker 2: say that they could have a potential home game in
- 18:36Speaker 2: December on their college campus. Like that to me is
- 18:39Speaker 2: an another another great thing that the expanded playeroff is
- 18:44Speaker 2: going to now, whether or not expands any further. We
- 18:46Speaker 2: keep hearing fourteen teams and possibility, you know, but let's
- 18:50Speaker 2: see how the first year goes. Let's see what you know,
- 18:52Speaker 2: really learned from what you saw in year one before
- 18:56Speaker 2: we start jumping to conclusions and getting anything there. The
- 18:59Speaker 2: one thing that I've kind of looked at and thought
- 19:03Speaker 2: of the SEC man they are cannibalizing themselves. It's going
- 19:08Speaker 2: to be hard to continue to be you know, you know,
- 19:10Speaker 2: think of Georgia, like, I think they're a really good team,
- 19:13Speaker 2: but they may not make the postseason. They could, it's
- 19:16Speaker 2: a possibility, you know, they're certainly not playing for a
- 19:18Speaker 2: conference title anymore. Like this is an interesting, you.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Know, crossroads. I mean, it's kind of a crossroads in
- 19:28Speaker 1: a lot of ways with regard to the college football experience.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Well, you can also like having that buy, right, like
- 19:35Speaker 2: being able to play for that buy. That's the other
- 19:36Speaker 2: thing too, like being able to rest up. And and
- 19:39Speaker 2: the other thing too when I was thinking about it
- 19:41Speaker 2: from a Penn State perspective, is who can you potentially
- 19:43Speaker 2: be in the postseason that could be that quality win,
- 19:46Speaker 2: Like if you're losing the Ohio State, having the opportunity
- 19:49Speaker 2: to go up against the Notre Dame, having an opportunity
- 19:52Speaker 2: to beat an SEC team like that to me, you
- 19:56Speaker 2: can still end on a positive note. You don't have
- 19:58Speaker 2: to worry about guys opting out as much anymore. Like
- 20:01Speaker 2: that's another thing that kind of reared its ugly ahead
- 20:03Speaker 2: the past couple of years. People got frustrated with that,
- 20:06Speaker 2: and I understand why did they make that decision. There's
- 20:09Speaker 2: money on the table, I understand. But if we're looking
- 20:12Speaker 2: for the good things around college football, continuing to grow
- 20:16Speaker 2: the sport, allowing the fans to still be satisfied with
- 20:20Speaker 2: some of the results, I think it's important to allow
- 20:22Speaker 2: some of the best players in the sport being able
- 20:24Speaker 2: to play in the postseason. We'll see that this year.
- 20:26Speaker 2: I'm pretty confident.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I am as well. Again, folks, we're talking to
- 20:29Speaker 1: Mike Raymond from Fox Sports Radio of the Lehigh Valley.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Follow him on the Twitter slash x at Mike Raymond LV.
- 20:36Speaker 1: He is a great, great follow and I believe you're
- 20:38Speaker 1: over on threads too. It's it all Mike RAYMONDLV.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Also correct, Mike, I am on threads. I don't post
- 20:44Speaker 2: much on this, okay, but yeah, I'm there.
- 20:46Speaker 1: I've been transitioning a lot more. Quite frankly, it's not
- 20:50Speaker 1: the same experience I mean, it's conversation for another time.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I don't know what to do. But my co host
- 20:55Speaker 1: Len just got off Twitter this past week. He's like,
- 20:59Speaker 1: that's it. I am done.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Yes, it was because of the college football playoff anouncement. Exactly,
- 21:07Speaker 2: That's what it.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Was, exactly, exactly. Well, Mike, you know, you know, looking
- 21:12Speaker 1: at this college football season, I mean, it wasn't gonna
- 21:15Speaker 1: be all lollipops and rainbows for some of the most
- 21:17Speaker 1: dominant college football teams in recent memory. I mean, it's
- 21:19Speaker 1: so interesting that a team like Indiana is ranked higher
- 21:23Speaker 1: than teams like Alabama and Georgia at this particular point
- 21:26Speaker 1: of time US recording this, so you can say the
- 21:30Speaker 1: same with BYU. In fact, there are a lot of
- 21:32Speaker 1: really good teams in the top twenty five. I mean Army,
- 21:35Speaker 1: of course, I think they're still undefeated at this point,
- 21:38Speaker 1: and there's certainly some really good top twelve talented teams
- 21:42Speaker 1: as well. As we're looking towards the college football Playoff,
- 21:45Speaker 1: how do you describe some of the movements and shifts
- 21:49Speaker 1: that we're seeing in college football this season as it
- 21:52Speaker 1: pertains to the Indiana's or the Armies or the BYUS.
- 21:56Speaker 1: What are your thoughts here.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, I think maybe for portal
- 22:00Speaker 2: could potentially be appointed that as one of the big
- 22:02Speaker 2: reasons as why you're seeing such a disbursement of talent
- 22:05Speaker 2: across with multiple places, which you know, I think that's
- 22:08Speaker 2: one positive I guess you can say about the transfer portal.
- 22:11Speaker 2: I still think some of the rules of college football,
- 22:13Speaker 2: including transfer portal, including nil, need to be refined and
- 22:16Speaker 2: universally accepted by all college football teams, but that if
- 22:19Speaker 2: you're looking for positives, that certainly can be a talent
- 22:22Speaker 2: dispersement from the transfer portal to getting all these teams.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Indian he brought up Indiana Kurt Signetti what he's been
- 22:28Speaker 2: able to do at Indiana. You know, everyone wanted to
- 22:31Speaker 2: laugh at him at that opening press conference when he
- 22:34Speaker 2: just said, look me up, you know, I win wherever
- 22:36Speaker 2: I go. Well, yeah, he's done that to this point.
- 22:39Speaker 2: They have Ohio State in two weeks, so we'll see
- 22:41Speaker 2: what happens at the end ultimately. But for stories like that,
- 22:44Speaker 2: I think it's just so special. And you know, whether
- 22:47Speaker 2: you know you're a top twenty five team or just
- 22:49Speaker 2: being able to be competitive like you're if you're a
- 22:52Speaker 2: perennial bottom dweller and just being able to continue to
- 22:55Speaker 2: build your program through the transfer portal and getting like
- 22:58Speaker 2: one or two players, and you know, there's there's a
- 23:00Speaker 2: lot to be said about that. You know, it's unusual
- 23:03Speaker 2: for some of the traditionalists and college football that are
- 23:05Speaker 2: going to say, you know, they're so used to the
- 23:08Speaker 2: Alabama winning we year after year after year, like it's
- 23:11Speaker 2: going to be it's going to take you some time
- 23:12Speaker 2: to adapt. But I like the fact that other teams
- 23:15Speaker 2: have an opportunity, are able to compete, and their schools
- 23:19Speaker 2: deserve to be happy, just like Alabama has for the
- 23:21Speaker 2: past two decades.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Absolutely. Look, it may have been three or four weeks
- 23:26Speaker 1: ago when Indiana I think I think they may have
- 23:28Speaker 1: beat Nebraska or something like that. They absolutely killed them,
- 23:31Speaker 1: and then they ended up beating Washington. I was like,
- 23:33Speaker 1: oh my gosh. I'm like, I'm like, they're serious. I
- 23:36Speaker 1: mean not that Nebraska, necessarily in Washington are the greatest
- 23:39Speaker 1: college football programs, but still I was like, man, this
- 23:43Speaker 1: is a team to be reckoned with here. And it's
- 23:45Speaker 1: fun to why. I know, there's a Big Ten team
- 23:47Speaker 1: that's been in the Big Ten for quite some time
- 23:49Speaker 1: Penn State usually routes them when they play each other,
- 23:52Speaker 1: but still, it's really fun to watch these college programs
- 23:56Speaker 1: that are able to shock, really shock us and get
- 24:00Speaker 1: to the next level.
- 24:02Speaker 2: You look at the Indiana schedule and you can point out,
- 24:05Speaker 2: you know, their only quality win is against the down
- 24:07Speaker 2: Michigan team. I guess you could probably say, but they
- 24:11Speaker 2: play the teams that are on their schedule, it should
- 24:14Speaker 2: be that. Yeah, So Indiana has a bye week this week,
- 24:17Speaker 2: I believe, and then they have Ohio State. Yes, so yeah,
- 24:20Speaker 2: that's you know, if you beat if you beat Ohio State,
- 24:22Speaker 2: then you're gonna have people's eyes wide open because it's
- 24:24Speaker 2: all all but assured that you're going to beat the
- 24:26Speaker 2: worst team in Purdue the following week. So if you
- 24:29Speaker 2: if you can beat Ohio State, then you're talking about
- 24:32Speaker 2: a huge, huge shift. So Indiana certainly one of the
- 24:35Speaker 2: storylines that I'm following this this season when it comes to,
- 24:39Speaker 2: you know, teams that are just fun to watch and
- 24:42Speaker 2: being able to just compete in a level that they
- 24:45Speaker 2: really never have before. They haven't they've never gone to
- 24:47Speaker 2: ten and oh before, first time in program history.
- 24:49Speaker 1: It's incredible. If if Indiana beats Ohio State. They're just
- 24:52Speaker 1: going to kill Penn State. If Indiana place, They're just
- 24:57Speaker 1: and it'll be so bizarre to watch. Not that I
- 24:59Speaker 1: think that's gonna happen, but still I think Ohio State's
- 25:03Speaker 1: the better team than Indiana. But moving along here, Mike,
- 25:06Speaker 1: two teams that I'm really interested in outside of the
- 25:09Speaker 1: top ten, I'm sorry, top twelve, which with regard to
- 25:13Speaker 1: the college Football Playoff is Colorado and I mentioned the
- 25:17Speaker 1: other one, Army earlier. You know, both have incredibly talented
- 25:20Speaker 1: players on both sides of the ball, and I wonder
- 25:22Speaker 1: if either you know, based on their play over the
- 25:24Speaker 1: next couple of weeks, can get themselves into a position
- 25:27Speaker 1: where they will be in the top twelve and bracket eligible.
- 25:31Speaker 1: I mean, both these teams might be able to make
- 25:33Speaker 1: it if things fall the right way for them. I'm wondering,
- 25:36Speaker 1: are there any teams that you're keeping your eyes on
- 25:39Speaker 1: or you think maybe able to sneak into the top
- 25:40Speaker 1: twelve and get that playoff?
- 25:42Speaker 2: Berth Yeah, I mean, sm Use one of the teams
- 25:46Speaker 2: that you know, people, you know, it doesn't sound like
- 25:49Speaker 2: a sexy pick, but they're kind of right there, and
- 25:52Speaker 2: especially with some other teams in the conference. Losing this
- 25:55Speaker 2: past weekend, you can see a path for them. A
- 25:58Speaker 2: and M. I think is a dangerous They can get
- 26:00Speaker 2: themselves in the top twelve. You know, that is a
- 26:04Speaker 2: team that I don't want to have to play. I
- 26:06Speaker 2: picked against them against Missouri earlier in the year, and
- 26:08Speaker 2: I think that, Yeah, I'm regretting that one. Yeah, Clemson
- 26:12Speaker 2: from the standpoint that they've been there before, I don't
- 26:14Speaker 2: know what their path looks like at seven and two.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I'm not sure they're going to get there. I'm just
- 26:19Speaker 1: not sure.
- 26:21Speaker 2: It's tough. But if you asked me, I would say
- 26:24Speaker 2: Boise State, smut, Texas, A and M. Those are the
- 26:26Speaker 2: ones that I'm keeping my eye on.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Well, before I let you go here, buddy,
- 26:32Speaker 1: I wanted to just get into one more topic here.
- 26:36Speaker 1: You know, since Oregon they're the number one team in
- 26:39Speaker 1: the nation, you know we have to ask, I think
- 26:41Speaker 1: the question if they're actually vulnerable heading into this final
- 26:45Speaker 1: stretch of the season. And even as we look towards
- 26:47Speaker 1: the bracket, They've got Wisconsin, they've got Washington left on
- 26:50Speaker 1: their schedule, two teams that they should beat. But I
- 26:53Speaker 1: mean they have been running into some inconsistencies here and there.
- 26:56Speaker 1: I mean, we saw it against Maryland this past week.
- 26:59Speaker 1: They squeaked out a week in earlier this season against
- 27:01Speaker 1: Boise State. Yes, they beat Ohio State by one point.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I wonder if there are some vulnerabilities with Oregon that
- 27:09Speaker 1: we should be looking at down the stretch here, maybe
- 27:11Speaker 1: even into the playoffs. What that actually does to the
- 27:14Speaker 1: playoff bracket itself, and does it make things a little
- 27:17Speaker 1: bit more interesting for a team that that we may
- 27:20Speaker 1: not be honing ourselves in on at this point. I
- 27:22Speaker 1: don't know one of your thoughts here with regard to Oregon.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Oregon I think is a pretty complete team. You know.
- 27:27Speaker 2: I was very critical of Dylan Gabriel coming into the season,
- 27:31Speaker 2: as you know, how many how different schools has he
- 27:34Speaker 2: played a college around, multiple different schools, journeyman quarterback, and
- 27:38Speaker 2: I thought he might just be one of those guys
- 27:40Speaker 2: that just accumulates a bunch of stats. To this point,
- 27:42Speaker 2: he's played pretty well. I don't I think certainly we
- 27:45Speaker 2: could look at, you know, some more passing touchdowns at
- 27:48Speaker 2: this point in the season. I thought I might see
- 27:49Speaker 2: closer to twenty five thirty at this point in the season.
- 27:52Speaker 2: But you know we're gonna we're gonna be if we're
- 27:55Speaker 2: gonna try to find cracks in the armor for the
- 27:59Speaker 2: number one team, we got to be a little bit
- 28:01Speaker 2: more critical, and you know, he proved in a big
- 28:03Speaker 2: in a big way. I'd like to see them continue
- 28:05Speaker 2: to grow and I'd like to see some more quality
- 28:08Speaker 2: road winds. I know there's only two games left on
- 28:10Speaker 2: the schedule, but you know, they do go to Camp Randall.
- 28:12Speaker 2: And of course we talked about Washington certainly not the
- 28:16Speaker 2: national runner up we saw, you know, a year ago,
- 28:20Speaker 2: but you know, I don't know. I think they can
- 28:22Speaker 2: be got, you know, especially because of the thing that
- 28:26Speaker 2: I said about Gabriel to start, But at this point,
- 28:28Speaker 2: they haven't given us any reason to think that that
- 28:31Speaker 2: was going to happen. And you know, they played their
- 28:34Speaker 2: very best against Ohio State, so give credit where credit
- 28:38Speaker 2: is due. Could they be the national Championship champions? Yes? Sure,
- 28:43Speaker 2: would there be. Would I be shocked if they're not?
- 28:45Speaker 2: Probably not, because I just think it's going to be
- 28:47Speaker 2: a harder path for whoever raises the trophy at the
- 28:50Speaker 2: end of the year, because it's having this playoff you're
- 28:52Speaker 2: going to have to beat at least two really good
- 28:56Speaker 2: teams on your way to that championship. Whether it be
- 28:59Speaker 2: two to three, it's not gonna matter. But Oregon, as
- 29:02Speaker 2: long as they can continue to stay in that top four,
- 29:06Speaker 2: they can secure that home game and the bye that
- 29:09Speaker 2: makes their path a little bit easier.
- 29:10Speaker 1: It's gonna be interesting to watch for sure. And I'm
- 29:13Speaker 1: hoping to have you on again at some point down
- 29:17Speaker 1: the road, Buddy, I appreciate you taking the time.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely again, folks.

- 30:59Speaker 1: interesting Flyers team for sure during this rebuild. Let's get

- 31:19Speaker 3: Man, I'm doing good. I'm happy to be back as always,
- 31:22Speaker 3: and it's a it's always good when the Flyers are
- 31:24Speaker 3: playing better hockey. The better, Yes, better hockey, better hockey,
- 31:29Speaker 3: not quite good hockey, but better.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Better hockey. Hopeful hockey too. I think I think we
- 31:33Speaker 1: can put hopeful in there too, right.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Yeah, three game points streak, you know that's not something going.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Here exactly exactly. Well, Before we get into some some
- 31:41Speaker 1: good stuff, some more positive stuff that we've been seeing
- 31:44Speaker 1: with this team as of late, I kind of wanted
- 31:46Speaker 1: to go back a little bit, go back to the
- 31:48Speaker 1: beginning of this season. Wanted to assess where some of
- 31:52Speaker 1: the challenges were with this team right out of the gate,
- 31:55Speaker 1: both on offense and defense. I kind of wanted to
- 31:57Speaker 1: set that foundation in that stage for where the team
- 32:00Speaker 1: is at right now, Ryan, and then we can you know,
- 32:03Speaker 1: kind of dive into some defense, dive into some more
- 32:05Speaker 1: offense stuff. You know, we're gonna get into torts as well.
- 32:09Speaker 1: It was a rough defensive star Let's start with the offense.
- 32:12Speaker 1: I'll say it was a rough offensive start to the season.
- 32:15Speaker 1: We talked about it here on this podcast platform. We
- 32:17Speaker 1: know you talked about over at Broad Street Hockey as well.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Why do you think that we saw such a rough
- 32:23Speaker 1: offensive time coming out of the gate. Was it the
- 32:25Speaker 1: guy's just trying to do too much? Because that's what
- 32:27Speaker 1: we were seeing here And I wanted to get your
- 32:29Speaker 1: thoughts to set that stage of where this team was
- 32:33Speaker 1: to start the season.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it was an extremely disappointing start after
- 32:38Speaker 3: that shootout wind to open it up, and yeah, I
- 32:40Speaker 3: think it's just like I want to preface this by saying,
- 32:42Speaker 3: none of this is speaking ill of Matt van Miichkoff,
- 32:45Speaker 3: but anytime you add like a shiny new piece to
- 32:49Speaker 3: a machine, like you replaced Cam Akinson with Matt Vanmachkoff,
- 32:52Speaker 3: Atkinson's clearly a worse player, but he's that old rusty
- 32:56Speaker 3: gear in the machine that you know what you're gonna get.
- 32:58Speaker 3: You know it's gonna do its job. Ye know, it
- 33:00Speaker 3: might might falter here or there. Then you add in
- 33:02Speaker 3: this new, shiny gear. You know, new technology. It's great,
- 33:06Speaker 3: but it takes some time to kind of work with that,
- 33:08Speaker 3: and the Flyers definitely saw that early on, trying to
- 33:11Speaker 3: find who's going to play with who you know, they
- 33:13Speaker 3: can't just go all out on the four check and
- 33:16Speaker 3: back check because that's not Mitchkov's game. And that's perfectly fine.
- 33:18Speaker 3: We want him to score goals. But you know, if
- 33:20Speaker 3: there's one winger that's not going to be a two
- 33:23Speaker 3: hundred foot player, that affects his line mates, that affects
- 33:27Speaker 3: every line it just trickles down. So I think it
- 33:29Speaker 3: was just you know, it's mostly the similar team, same
- 33:33Speaker 3: coaching staff, but I think they have also tried to
- 33:35Speaker 3: incorporate you know, more controlled breakouts, more controlled entries, less
- 33:39Speaker 3: high flips in there, less less dumps. So it's about
- 33:43Speaker 3: you know, building, developing this team and not winning right now,
- 33:47Speaker 3: which is very frustrating to watch as a fan, but
- 33:49Speaker 3: you know, thinking long term, it's hopeful.
- 33:52Speaker 1: As you said before, absolutely look at the beginning of
- 33:55Speaker 1: the season, you know, I think we saw guys like
- 33:57Speaker 1: Own Tippett and Joel Farrabee really just trying to do
- 34:00Speaker 1: way too much. They get into the zone and once
- 34:03Speaker 1: they get into the zone, it'd be just like it'd
- 34:05Speaker 1: be like a free for all. It just disorganization across
- 34:08Speaker 1: the board. We're not seeing that as much anymore. Defensively, however,
- 34:13Speaker 1: you know, they really weren't helping the goaltenders out at
- 34:16Speaker 1: the start of the season. Frankly, I mean we saw
- 34:18Speaker 1: that things are starting to get a little better defensively
- 34:21Speaker 1: as well. Why do you think the defense struggled early
- 34:24Speaker 1: this season?
- 34:24Speaker 3: Rhyin, Yeah, I think the defense is just a part
- 34:27Speaker 3: of that. The offense not being able to come back
- 34:29Speaker 3: and help them out, like it's a five man unit
- 34:31Speaker 3: and if they're not all playing together, people got to
- 34:33Speaker 3: cover for other people, like they're not sure where they're
- 34:35Speaker 3: going to be. And also I think people underestimate the
- 34:39Speaker 3: loss of Sean Walker, like I know we traded him
- 34:41Speaker 3: late in this season. Last year, Jimmie Drysdale replaces him.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Drysdale is nowhere, Neil near. The defensive players are going
- 34:47Speaker 3: to get into him. He needs a lot of time. Sami, Sam,
- 34:51Speaker 3: him and and York have been great when healthy. Bristo's
- 34:54Speaker 3: been very surprising, very good, but very true. Yeah, Zamula's
- 34:58Speaker 3: had a tough start. Steeler missed some time. I'm like,
- 35:00Speaker 3: it was just like a mixing and matching and finding
- 35:03Speaker 3: that system. Like the Flyers obviously don't have a great
- 35:06Speaker 3: defensive corps, right, they were better than they were playing
- 35:09Speaker 3: early on, and we are starting to see that.
- 35:11Speaker 1: All right. Well, now that we dove into what was
- 35:14Speaker 1: wrong kind of with the team at the start of
- 35:17Speaker 1: the season, let's get into like what has actually been
- 35:19Speaker 1: going right for them. I mean the road trip could
- 35:23Speaker 1: be a potential turning point I think for this season perhaps.
- 35:27Speaker 1: I mean, they seem to be an improved version of themselves,
- 35:30Speaker 1: really really dictating the speed of the game, especially in
- 35:33Speaker 1: the game against the Panthers. Even though they lost that game,
- 35:36Speaker 1: there was a lot of hope I thought with regard
- 35:38Speaker 1: to that game and what we saw both offensively and defensively.
- 35:42Speaker 1: I mean, there's more consistent offense. I'll say, over these
- 35:46Speaker 1: past few games, here, Ryan, what have you seen with
- 35:50Speaker 1: this team where they may be like turning the ship,
- 35:52Speaker 1: the ship may be turning around in a positive way.
- 35:55Speaker 1: What have you been seeing as of late?
- 35:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean that that road trip definitely could be
- 35:59Speaker 3: a turning point, because I remember talking about it, like,
- 36:01Speaker 3: you know, Carolina, Tampa Florida, if they get one point,
- 36:04Speaker 3: it's lucky. And they got three point three points in
- 36:06Speaker 3: three games, which is you know, impressive. Now even going
- 36:09Speaker 3: back to that wild game, like they started one five
- 36:12Speaker 3: and one, their five three and one since then, and
- 36:15Speaker 3: like two of those losses are to Boston and Carolina,
- 36:18Speaker 3: Like you can't you can't complain too much about that.
- 36:20Speaker 3: But more more more recently, especially that Tampa Bay game,
- 36:24Speaker 3: getting a Beach Cough out of the lineup, which we'll
- 36:26Speaker 3: get to. It gets back to what I was saying,
- 36:29Speaker 3: like what they were last year, get back to their system.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Anthony Rashard's in there, Like they're just playing good hockey,
- 36:35Speaker 3: good good structure for check backchecking, and most importantly shooting
- 36:39Speaker 3: the puck. Because in Carolina they had sixteen shots. Their
- 36:43Speaker 3: next game they had thirty one, and then thirty seven,
- 36:46Speaker 3: then forty three on Monday Night against them. Yes, they
- 36:49Speaker 3: have one and eleven shots in their past three games.
- 36:52Speaker 3: They had one hundred and twenty five shots in their
- 36:54Speaker 3: previous six, So complete change of offensive philosophy that they're
- 36:59Speaker 3: just getting puck on that. And like you said, yeah, Tippet, Farrabee, Frost,
- 37:03Speaker 3: all these guys were you know, holding their sticks tight,
- 37:06Speaker 3: like just needing something to go. Like, hockey players need
- 37:10Speaker 3: confidence and tipp It's starting to feel it now, Farrabe
- 37:13Speaker 3: a little bit less so, but we're starting to see
- 37:15Speaker 3: tippet connect ego so and we finally have a few
- 37:18Speaker 3: consistent lines. We have Tippitt Viatoria connecting up top. We
- 37:22Speaker 3: have Farraby Lawton Brink in the middle six, we have
- 37:25Speaker 3: the fourth line is usually together. So that's the key
- 37:28Speaker 3: is finding the trios that play well together and nowhere
- 37:32Speaker 3: like each each other is going to be like because
- 37:34Speaker 3: it's not about chasing the puck. You have to go
- 37:36Speaker 3: where your role is playing. You have to go to
- 37:39Speaker 3: the or the ice. So once you're playing with line
- 37:42Speaker 3: mates a long time, it should gain chemistry and we
- 37:45Speaker 3: are seeing that over the past three games.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Again, folks talking to Ryan Gilbert from the broad Street
- 37:51Speaker 1: Hockey podcast Broadstreet Hockey dot Com. Check out everything they
- 37:54Speaker 1: have gone on over there. I'm a subscriber and you
- 37:57Speaker 1: can also find Ryan on Twitter. Let me see if I
- 38:00Speaker 1: remember this our Gilbert s op on Twitter.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Correct.
- 38:04Speaker 3: Yeah, gosh, how.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Do I remember handles all the time. It's amazing. I'm
- 38:07Speaker 1: amazed myself I'm just kidding, seriously, I just pulled that
- 38:10Speaker 1: one out, like, oh my gosh. Anyway, it's a great
- 38:12Speaker 1: great follow follow him on the Twitter slash x. And
- 38:16Speaker 1: of course we got to get into Matt Ve Mitchkov
- 38:17Speaker 1: meetch CoV. I'm constantly mis mispronouncing it. It's Mattve meetsch CoV, right,
- 38:22Speaker 1: I think that's what it is, right, I think?
- 38:24Speaker 3: So I try to imitate what what JJ says on
- 38:27Speaker 3: their broadcast. Okay, Mitch Coff meets golf even like Matt
- 38:30Speaker 3: Vey Matt VII, Like, no one knows, right, no one
- 38:32Speaker 3: knows for sure?
- 38:33Speaker 1: All right, Well, look his benching for a couple games, uh,
- 38:37Speaker 1: and then his return. I wanted to get into this
- 38:39Speaker 1: with you because there was a lot of folks within
- 38:41Speaker 1: Flyers Nation that were just like absolutely just in sense
- 38:45Speaker 1: that that that he was scratched for a couple of games,
- 38:48Speaker 1: and you know, rightfully so in a way, you know,
- 38:51Speaker 1: I wasn't too like perturbed by it. It was kind of
- 38:54Speaker 1: annoying for me. I'm like, you know, it's like, why
- 38:58Speaker 1: why are you doing this right off the bat tour?
- 39:00Speaker 1: But I gotta say he responded to being scratched for
- 39:03Speaker 1: a couple of games by really coming out and proving
- 39:06Speaker 1: a point to the coaching staff and John Tortorella for sure,
- 39:10Speaker 1: Like he's not perfect by any stretch, but he showed
- 39:14Speaker 1: what kind of offensive weapon he is and will be
- 39:17Speaker 1: for this team. So just so much promise, so much
- 39:21Speaker 1: hope with him. I thought it was interesting how you
- 39:23Speaker 1: talked about him as being like the new technology piece
- 39:26Speaker 1: on this team. You know, you just trying to get
- 39:28Speaker 1: things figured out, and once you do, I mean that
- 39:31Speaker 1: piece of technology is going to be really special. So, Ryan,
- 39:34Speaker 1: what are your thoughts on the meachcuff scratches, his return
- 39:37Speaker 1: to the lineup, and really what it means for this
- 39:39Speaker 1: team even from a long term perspective here.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I understand people that are upset, and I say,
- 39:44Speaker 3: you know, the only way you can learn to play
- 39:46Speaker 3: in the NHL is by playing on the ice, and
- 39:48Speaker 3: they want to see him out there every game. And
- 39:49Speaker 3: I get that, and I completely understand that. Back, you know,
- 39:52Speaker 3: seven ten years ago with Connectney when he was feted
- 39:54Speaker 3: by Hackstall, I would yell about that about that. But
- 39:58Speaker 3: this is John Tortorella, a completely lead different coach. We'll
- 40:01Speaker 3: get into him more later, but yeah, I mean, the
- 40:03Speaker 3: writing was kind of on the wall. He was getting
- 40:05Speaker 3: benched in the third period of that Carolina game, only
- 40:07Speaker 3: played on the power play, dropped down the lineup a bit,
- 40:10Speaker 3: so he was getting tired too. He didn't have a
- 40:12Speaker 3: point in four games, which is, you know, pretty long
- 40:16Speaker 3: for him because he had points in six of the
- 40:18Speaker 3: first eight games. But yeah, I mean, bouncing back there
- 40:21Speaker 3: on Monday night against the Sharks against Maclin, Celebriney got
- 40:24Speaker 3: that punch in the face at the regulation that luckily
- 40:27Speaker 3: he didn't cost him. It was a good to see
- 40:29Speaker 3: there for for the broad Steed Foley mentality. Yeah, and
- 40:32Speaker 3: he had that that breakaway goal, gorgeous goal in the shootout,
- 40:36Speaker 3: the assist on the power play, the touch pass from
- 40:38Speaker 3: from Andre to him up to connect me. I am
- 40:42Speaker 3: worried about like who he's gonna play with because I
- 40:44Speaker 3: don't love him with Ryan Paling and Anthony Rashard, but
- 40:47Speaker 3: not at all. If it were If it works, it works,
- 40:50Speaker 3: and because we want to see him on the power player.
- 40:52Speaker 3: If it's going to work, I don't know, it's not
- 40:55Speaker 3: gonna it's not gonna work. But I mean, you got
- 40:58Speaker 3: two points. Ryan Paling had that that pass for the
- 41:00Speaker 3: breakaway against the Sharks. Maybe it won't work against a
- 41:04Speaker 3: better team when you're not playing San Jose. But yeah,
- 41:06Speaker 3: this is all a part of the long term development,
- 41:09Speaker 3: Like I know the Sharks are like scratching Will Smith
- 41:12Speaker 3: and and mecncell Abrini is like part of like development
- 41:15Speaker 3: days and like long term development, and that's what it is.
- 41:18Speaker 3: You know, he played only played forty seven games last year,
- 41:21Speaker 3: forty eight, Like he's already played fourteen plays at a
- 41:24Speaker 3: higher pace, plays more games per week in the NHL,
- 41:27Speaker 3: and he has, you know, kind of slowed down in
- 41:30Speaker 3: back to backs, three and four situations. So if you're
- 41:33Speaker 3: gonna scratch him here and there on the road so
- 41:35Speaker 3: the home fans can see him one hundred percent, I'm
- 41:37Speaker 3: all for it.
- 41:38Speaker 1: He's so aggressive, like he's so and he was so
- 41:41Speaker 1: aggressive within the first couple of weeks of the season,
- 41:44Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh my god, if he keeps up
- 41:46Speaker 1: this pace, what's gonna happen around December with him?
- 41:49Speaker 2: Really?
- 41:50Speaker 1: And there are some folks who don't I don't know
- 41:52Speaker 1: how in tune to hockey they are and how much
- 41:55Speaker 1: they watch and stuff, and they're criticizing the moves and
- 41:58Speaker 1: I'm like, are you really serious here? You I mean,
- 42:01Speaker 1: it's it's two games in a row. It's not the
- 42:03Speaker 1: end of the world here. And like I said, he
- 42:07Speaker 1: was just he was going one hundred percent the first
- 42:09Speaker 1: couple weeks of the season. I'm like, my gosh, they're
- 42:11Speaker 1: gonna have to give this guy, this kid some rest here.
- 42:14Speaker 1: He's not used to this.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 42:16Speaker 3: Basketball players have load management all the time, veterans making
- 42:20Speaker 3: and I can't.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Get into the six ers. I'm gonna get mad.
- 42:23Speaker 3: But a nineteen year old kid like I scratched him
- 42:25Speaker 3: for two out of eighty eighty two games, Like righteh,
- 42:27Speaker 3: it's like like a few plays of an Eagles game.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Of course he got scratched exactly exactly. All right, Well,
- 42:33Speaker 1: moving on here, I want to dive into Morgan Frost here.
- 42:36Speaker 1: Want to get into Morgan Frost and how you know,
- 42:38Speaker 1: he's been scratched and he he just hasn't played well
- 42:42Speaker 1: and it's been a real shame, quite frankly, to see
- 42:44Speaker 1: him struggle. I mean, at this point in his career,
- 42:47Speaker 1: what does Frost need to do moving forward once he
- 42:49Speaker 1: gets back onto the ice in your opinion, because like
- 42:52Speaker 1: I said, it's just it's been disappointing to see his
- 42:54Speaker 1: play as of late and just kind of where he
- 42:57Speaker 1: has at in his career right now. What are your
- 42:59Speaker 1: thoughts on Morgan?
- 42:59Speaker 3: For yeah, it was weird going into training camp not
- 43:04Speaker 3: hearing much conversation about Morgan Frost because like going into
- 43:06Speaker 3: training camp, but I was like, Oh, what what's Morgan
- 43:08Speaker 3: Frost gonna be this year? How is he gonna do
- 43:10Speaker 3: this year? I was like, all right, Frost has a
- 43:11Speaker 3: chance with meets Goff, maybe we can see his skill now.
- 43:14Speaker 3: And he has one goal, six points in fifteen games,
- 43:17Speaker 3: and that goal was he was on his knees and
- 43:19Speaker 3: it bounced off his shin pad in he'd He's had
- 43:22Speaker 3: great chances here and there. He's been shooting the puck
- 43:24Speaker 3: a decent amount. But I don't know, Like I just
- 43:27Speaker 3: think he needs a change of scenery, whether that's a
- 43:30Speaker 3: trade or just towards being like, all right, you had
- 43:33Speaker 3: the healthy scratch out of the way, go out there
- 43:35Speaker 3: without a leash, like, don't be afraid to make turnovers,
- 43:38Speaker 3: play your game, and you know, see what you can do.
- 43:40Speaker 3: Like I think at this point in his career, he's
- 43:43Speaker 3: twenty five now going on twenty six in May. He's
- 43:46Speaker 3: a forty point player pretty much like that's what he is.
- 43:49Speaker 3: And it sucks because the Flyers have real no other
- 43:52Speaker 3: centers Teuan Ratoria's aging Paling and Kate's and those guys
- 43:57Speaker 3: aren't top six centers. So he's forced to play proudly
- 44:00Speaker 3: above his head. So I think at this point, like
- 44:02Speaker 3: a change of scenery trade would make the most sense,
- 44:05Speaker 3: but you'd have to get a center back for him.
- 44:07Speaker 3: So it's it's tough right now with Morgan Frost. And
- 44:10Speaker 3: it's unfortunate because, yeah, he was a first round pick
- 44:12Speaker 3: back in twenty seventeen, was some hype around him, and
- 44:15Speaker 3: now seven years later, it's.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Just, yeah, it's unfortunate. Yeah, honestly, I feel like he's
- 44:21Speaker 1: been here forever too. I mean he's twenty five years old.
- 44:23Speaker 1: I feel like he's thirty five here at this point
- 44:25Speaker 1: that you know, as long as we've been talking about
- 44:28Speaker 1: him and what his play has been on the ice.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Hopefully Towards does say that, you know, just you know,
- 44:33Speaker 1: just go out there, balls to the wall, see what
- 44:35Speaker 1: you can do if if you turn puck over, turn
- 44:37Speaker 1: the puck over. You know, I need we need to
- 44:40Speaker 1: see more from him, But like you said, like how
- 44:43Speaker 1: much more are we going to see from him with
- 44:44Speaker 1: the talent that he has? Not too sure? But I
- 44:46Speaker 1: mean that kind of leads us to the next topic here,
- 44:48Speaker 1: which is consistency with this team. And I mean consistency
- 44:52Speaker 1: is going to be key as this team moves forward.
- 44:55Speaker 1: And I'm wondering, what are some of the under the radar,
- 44:58Speaker 1: like offensive aspects of this Flyers team that we really
- 45:01Speaker 1: need to keep our eyes on. Aspects of the offense
- 45:05Speaker 1: that really may help with this consistent see that you've seen,
- 45:08Speaker 1: whether it's over these past few games or or just
- 45:11Speaker 1: the entire season as well, things that are kind of
- 45:13Speaker 1: under the radar. What are your thoughts.
- 45:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it goes back to, you know, consistency
- 45:18Speaker 3: in the lines there, Victoria Tippet Connectne was a great
- 45:21Speaker 3: line last season at times. They're performing well again again
- 45:24Speaker 3: right now. And it goes back to shooting the puck.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Like like I said, they have forty three shots last game.
- 45:29Speaker 3: It's their season high. And like last year, that's what
- 45:32Speaker 3: they were doing. They were shooting the puck a lot.
- 45:33Speaker 3: They were playing fun hockey no matter what, even if
- 45:36Speaker 3: it was a loss. They were still getting their chances
- 45:38Speaker 3: and whatnot. So it's back to that. It's getting the
- 45:41Speaker 3: getting the breakouts, getting the entries, taking shots when you
- 45:44Speaker 3: have the chance. Don't don't go, don't go one and done,
- 45:46Speaker 3: don't go into the zone. Not take a shot and
- 45:49Speaker 3: then set up because like they do that, and I
- 45:52Speaker 3: liken it to a football team on like third and
- 45:54Speaker 3: ten from the ten yard line, third and goal from
- 45:56Speaker 3: ten yards analogy. Yeah, there's there's not a lot of
- 45:58Speaker 3: room to work with. Flyers don't have enough skill to
- 46:01Speaker 3: kind of make a play there, so it's just, you know,
- 46:04Speaker 3: they kind of get stuck there. So you know, cycle
- 46:06Speaker 3: get consistency with the lines nowhere your linemates are going
- 46:09Speaker 3: to be and confidence. Ultimately, it's confidences. Got a three
- 46:13Speaker 3: game points streak in Ottawa on Thursday and then a
- 46:15Speaker 3: five game homestand because they can really get some momentum
- 46:18Speaker 3: going there.
- 46:19Speaker 1: They could They absolutely could the one the one defenseman. Though,
- 46:23Speaker 1: I wanted to really talk about with you. I talked
- 46:25Speaker 1: to our good friend of the show runs Broadstreet Hockey
- 46:28Speaker 1: dot Com, Kelly Hankel talked to her a couple weeks
- 46:31Speaker 1: ago about Jamie Drysdale and where we wanted to see
- 46:35Speaker 1: his season go. And I have been talking about Jimmie
- 46:38Speaker 1: Drysdale for a while now on this podcast whenever we
- 46:41Speaker 1: talk about the Flyers, and I'm just it's just so
- 46:43Speaker 1: disappointing that he's been placed on the ir here. I mean,
- 46:47Speaker 1: he was He's one of those defensive aspects of this
- 46:50Speaker 1: team I wanted to see take that bigger leap this season.
- 46:53Speaker 1: And yet again another injury here, and I feel like
- 46:57Speaker 1: it's just like we're all deflated with regard to Jamie
- 47:00Speaker 1: Drysdale here. I don't know. We talked about the struggles
- 47:03Speaker 1: with the defense and what they faced earlier on this season. Ryan,
- 47:06Speaker 1: at the top of our discussion, what are your overall
- 47:09Speaker 1: thoughts on where this team is at defensively?
- 47:11Speaker 2: Now?
- 47:12Speaker 1: You know, given the Drysdale is gonna be out for
- 47:14Speaker 1: some time, what are your thoughts defensively here?
- 47:17Speaker 3: Yeah, Drysdale's had a rough go of it this year
- 47:19Speaker 3: and like just his whole development arc. Yeah, since being
- 47:22Speaker 3: drafted in Anaheim. Anaheim was not a good team. It
- 47:25Speaker 3: was a first round pick in twenty twenty and he
- 47:27Speaker 3: played twenty four games that rookie season. He played you know,
- 47:30Speaker 3: eighty one. The next one had some injury troubles, had
- 47:33Speaker 3: some contract troubles in Anaheim before being traded to Philly.
- 47:37Speaker 3: So like he's still twenty two, He's not gonna be
- 47:40Speaker 3: twenty three till April, so he's still really young, still
- 47:42Speaker 3: real notable defenseman. We saw what Bradshaw has been able
- 47:46Speaker 3: to do with Travis Sandheim, rustmusrussa Lineen. Obviously, Drysdale's a
- 47:50Speaker 3: different type of player, but I'm excited to see what
- 47:53Speaker 3: Amil Andre can do. I've been very excited by him
- 47:55Speaker 3: over the past few games. He's up on that top line.
- 47:58Speaker 3: He gives me, give me some kind of change, shinges
- 48:00Speaker 3: a little. Yes, It's very excited to see that. And
- 48:04Speaker 3: I think ultimately with Drysdale here, this could be a
- 48:07Speaker 3: blessing in disguise. Get him, get him off his legs
- 48:10Speaker 3: for a bit, get him in the press box, get
- 48:11Speaker 3: him to reset a bit, kind of like Mitchakov, and
- 48:14Speaker 3: then hopefully, you know, with Sandheim, with York, with Andre,
- 48:18Speaker 3: with Bristol Linen, Drysdale can you know, play third pair,
- 48:21Speaker 3: play on the power play, and kind of just not
- 48:23Speaker 3: play against tough competition so he can take more chances
- 48:26Speaker 3: and do more of his Rover type game, and yeah,
- 48:29Speaker 3: just just be very patient with him, and I think
- 48:32Speaker 3: it's helpful. I think it's easier to be patient with
- 48:34Speaker 3: him when you look over and see Cutter Gotier has
- 48:36Speaker 3: zero goals through like yes, yes, So it's not like
- 48:40Speaker 3: Gotier is going off and you're like, oh, how we
- 48:41Speaker 3: traded this guy for Drysdale who heard again? But so
- 48:45Speaker 3: just no patients on both sides.
- 48:46Speaker 1: There, All right, sounds good, but it's interesting you mentioned
- 48:49Speaker 1: Shang Gosta Spair. I was a huge Shan Gosta Speer fan.
- 48:52Speaker 1: I know you were too, you love you liked Gasta Speer.
- 48:54Speaker 1: I mean election night. I was at our congresswoman's like
- 48:58Speaker 1: election night shindig thing. Here's a dude there wearing a
- 49:01Speaker 1: Gasta Spare jersey and I'd like high fived him. I
- 49:03Speaker 1: was like, this is great, Yes, it's great. I've got
- 49:07Speaker 1: my Gasta Spare fiftieth anniversary jersey that I still wear.
- 49:10Speaker 1: I don't care. I'm wearing it for the rest of
- 49:12Speaker 1: my life. I don't care. Yes, right, Well, before I
- 49:15Speaker 1: let you go, buddy, I wanted to talk about one
- 49:18Speaker 1: John Tortorella. I mean, there's always criticism and praise to
- 49:22Speaker 1: go around when it comes to coaching in the NHL,
- 49:24Speaker 1: as we know, I just want to get your thoughts
- 49:27Speaker 1: on how John Tortorella has coached this team during the
- 49:31Speaker 1: overall start of this twenty twenty four twenty twenty five season.
- 49:34Speaker 1: And you know where he's taken some of these guys,
- 49:36Speaker 1: whether it's from a developmental perspective, the chances that he's
- 49:39Speaker 1: giving to some of these guys, again, the scratches that
- 49:42Speaker 1: we talked about earlier, how do you think he's coaching
- 49:44Speaker 1: this team at this point here in mid November.
- 49:48Speaker 3: I mean, it's John Torrello. So it's infuriating at times,
- 49:51Speaker 3: it's annoying, but this is what the Flyers are signing
- 49:54Speaker 3: signing up for, and this is what they're going with. Like,
- 49:56Speaker 3: he has a lot of a lot of trust in
- 49:58Speaker 3: that room with Brierra and Jonesy and then the trio
- 50:00Speaker 3: up top there scratching beach Goff, scratching Frost. This is
- 50:04Speaker 3: what he does. Like, this is what he does. But
- 50:06Speaker 3: the thing is, like in his past stops, the third
- 50:09Speaker 3: season has been big for him, Like he's taken a
- 50:12Speaker 3: step forward in those third third seasons. Obviously, this is
- 50:15Speaker 3: a different situation with the Flyers still rebuilding and not
- 50:18Speaker 3: quite trying to compete, But I love what I'm seeing
- 50:21Speaker 3: from connecting point per game Tippett, he's gonna get back
- 50:24Speaker 3: up there. He's he's developing well. Sandheim restall line and
- 50:27Speaker 3: like the players that you want to see develop long
- 50:30Speaker 3: term to stay on this team are developing well. And
- 50:33Speaker 3: you know, it's a matter of finding out, you know,
- 50:35Speaker 3: will Ferrabee stick around, will bring stick around, like will
- 50:38Speaker 3: Frost stick around?
- 50:39Speaker 2: Like?
- 50:40Speaker 3: Yeah, it's about finding out which of those middle six
- 50:42Speaker 3: wingers you can maybe trade for a center, or which
- 50:45Speaker 3: of them you should stick around for the long haul
- 50:47Speaker 3: and maybe can be a piece of a hopefully championship
- 50:50Speaker 3: roster in three, four, five years.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it's still gonna be It's gonna be interesting seeing
- 50:54Speaker 1: where this Flyers team goes this season. And again, folks,
