- 0:11Oh, there me hearties. How be it today It's be shown
- 0:16here and it's be September 19th, which means that be
- 0:20international talk like pirate day.
- 0:23You're step lively and be welcome me mateys, lovely to
- 0:28have your company. I'll I'll stop now That's a
- 0:30little painful. I'm very sorry, but it is
- 0:33September 19th, which literally is international talk like a
- 0:36pirate day. I wait all year long for this
- 0:39day so I can talk like a pirate. And for those of you who know
- 0:43they're the children's band The Wiggles, they're Captain Feather
- 0:46Sword. Well, he is the quintessential
- 0:48pirate for me. So every time I try and talk
- 0:51like a pirate, I find myself mimicking Captain Feather Sword.
- 0:55You may have your own pirate prototype that you go straight
- 0:58to, but whatever yours may be, yo ho ho buckos, speak like a
- 1:04pirate today. All right, I promise that's the
- 1:07last time. Now it is Friday my friends and
- 1:11we are going to be reading from the Proverbs today.
- 1:13So let's do just that. Let's get a little bit of Gods
- 1:16wisdom all the way through the ages to our pirate cells here.
- 1:21Reading from Proverbs 1615 to 21.
- 1:36When the king smiles, there is life.
- 1:39His favour refreshes like a spring rain.
- 1:45How much better to get wisdom than gold, and good judgement
- 1:50than silver. The path of the virtuous leads
- 1:57away from evil. Whoever follows that path is
- 2:00safe. Pride goes before destruction,
- 2:06and haughtiness before a fall. Better to live humbly with the
- 2:13poor than to share plunder with the proud.
- 2:20Those who listen to instruction will prosper.
- 2:24Those who trust the Lord will be joyful.
- 2:30The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant
- 2:33words are persuasive. And again, when the king smiles,
- 2:41there is life. His favour refreshes like a
- 2:44spring rain. How much better to get wisdom
- 2:50than gold, and good judgement than silver.
- 2:55The path of the virtuous leads away from evil.
- 2:58Whoever follows that path is safe.
- 3:04Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.
- 3:11Better to live humbly with the poor than to share plunder with
- 3:14the proud. Those who listen to instruction
- 3:19will prosper. Those who trust the Lord will be
- 3:22joyful. The wise are known for their
- 3:28understanding and pleasant words are persuasive.
- 3:31Our Lord, thank you for your wisdom
- 3:45and your truth passed down to us.
- 3:48And we see in verse 16 that wisdom is so much better than
- 3:54gold, and good judgement so much better than silver.
- 3:58Our Lord, our world would put gold at the top of the list.
- 4:02Really. We talk about the gold standard,
- 4:04Lord being the best because gold is worth so much material value.
- 4:11But here in your proverb, you teach us that material value is
- 4:15one thing, but it is nothing compared to wisdom.
- 4:20And as King Solomon writes these proverbs, the wisdom that he
- 4:24refers to comes from knowing you and fearing you.
- 4:31So, Lord, help reshape our lenses and our understanding of
- 4:36the world to be reminded that our understanding of you, that
- 4:41is the precious gold that is the most valuable and wonderful
- 4:46thing that we could possibly get.
- 4:49And yes, our days seem to be filled with chasing the other
- 4:52sort of gold and looking after ourselves and our families and
- 4:55our communities that, Lord, help shift our priority always to be
- 5:00you, knowing you, understanding you, fearing you and loving you
- 5:08because you are the prize and our relationship with you is the
- 5:10only eternal thing that we will begin here and our lives on
- 5:16earth. So we commit ourselves again to
- 5:21know you more, to understand you more and to love you more.
- 5:26Draw us ever closer to you, our wonderful, loving Father, our
- 5:30beautiful Saviour, and our comforting spirit.
- 5:34And I pray this all in your triune name, Amen.
