- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. Good to have you company.
- 0:15It is Wednesday, it's the 3rd of July and year of Tapped on Play
- 0:20and here I am. Your genie and your device come
- 0:23to read God's word with you. Ah, so good that you could take
- 0:27a moment, take a moment to invite not just any old chapter
- 0:32into your day, but a chapter of the gospel where we get to walk
- 0:36alongside Jesus and hear his words.
- 0:39And I don't know about you, but we we live in a world that is so
- 0:43full of quick quote, quid quo pro.
- 0:46That's where you do this and I'll do that for you.
- 0:49You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.
- 0:51And it is just kind of mind-blowing when you read the
- 0:55gospels again and we are reminded that Jesus says, no, I
- 0:58just come to save you. You just need to believe in me
- 1:01and I'm here to save you. This is a one way street where I
- 1:06give and I give and I give and I forgive and I love and I just
- 1:10need you to receive it. Just incredible.
- 1:12What a gracious and wonderful God we believe in.
- 1:17So we are going to learn more from Him as He chats to this
- 1:21Samaritan woman at the well and blows her mind and blows our
- 1:26minds to all these years later. Thank you Lord for this Your
- 1:31Word. Let it shape our hearts and
- 1:34transform us as we stand in awe of You once again.
- 1:40Let's read it. Let's read together John chapter
- 1:434. Jesus knew the Pharisees had
- 1:55heard that he was baptising and making more disciples than John.
- 1:59That Jesus himself didn't baptise them.
- 2:02His disciples did. So he left Judea and returned to
- 2:05Galilee. He had to go through Samaria on
- 2:08the way. Eventually he came to the
- 2:11Samarian village of Sika, near the field that Jacob gave his
- 2:15son Joseph. Jacob's well was there.
- 2:18Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well
- 2:23about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to
- 2:26draw water, and Jesus said to her, Please give me a drink.
- 2:31He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone to the
- 2:34village to buy some food. The woman was surprised, for
- 2:38Jews refused to have anything to do with Samaritans.
- 2:40She said to Jesus, You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman.
- 2:45Why are you asking me for a drink?
- 2:48Jesus replied. If you only knew the gift God
- 2:52has for you and who you were speaking to, you would ask me
- 2:56and I would give you living water.
- 2:59But, Sir, you don't have a rope or a bucket, she said.
- 3:04And this well is very deep. Where would you get this living
- 3:07water? And besides, do you think you're
- 3:10greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well?
- 3:13How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his
- 3:17animals enjoyed? Jesus replied, Anyone who drinks
- 3:22this water will soon become thirsty again, but those who
- 3:26drink the water I give will never be thirsty again.
- 3:29It becomes a fresh bubbling spring within them, giving them
- 3:34eternal life. Please, Sir, the woman said,
- 3:38Give me this water. Then I'll never be thirsty again
- 3:41and I won't have to come here to get water.
- 3:44Go and get your husband, Jesus told her.
- 3:48I don't have a husband, the woman replied.
- 3:51Jesus said you're right, you don't have a husband, for you
- 3:55have had five husbands and you aren't even married to the man
- 3:58you're living with now. You certainly spoke the truth,
- 4:03Sir, the woman said. You must be a prophet.
- 4:07So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is
- 4:12the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here
- 4:16at Mount Gerizim where our ancestors worshipped?
- 4:20Jesus replied. Believe me, dear woman, the time
- 4:24is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the
- 4:27Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.
- 4:30You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while
- 4:33we Jews know all about Him, for salvation comes through the
- 4:38Jews. But the time is coming.
- 4:40Indeed. It is here now when true
- 4:43worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.
- 4:48The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way,
- 4:51for God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in
- 4:55spirit and in truth. The woman said.
- 4:59I know the Messiah is coming, the one who is called Christ.
- 5:03When he comes, he will explain everything to us.
- 5:08Then Jesus told her I am the Messiah.
- 5:13Just then his disciples came back.
- 5:15They were shocked to find him talking to a woman.
- 5:18But none of them had the nerve to ask what do you want with her
- 5:21or why are you talking to her? The woman left her water jar
- 5:26beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone.
- 5:30Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did.
- 5:33Could he possibly be the Messiah?
- 5:36So the people came streaming from the village to see him.
- 5:40Meanwhile the disciples were urging Jesus.
- 5:43Rabbi, eat something. But Jesus replied, I have a kind
- 5:48of food you know nothing about. Did someone bring him food while
- 5:52we were gone? The disciples asked each other.
- 5:55Then Jesus explained My nourishment comes from doing the
- 5:59will of God who sent me and from finishing his work.
- 6:04You know the saying, four months between planting and harvest.
- 6:08But I say, wake up and look around.
- 6:11The fields are already ripe for harvest.
- 6:14The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they
- 6:18harvest is people brought to eternal life.
- 6:21What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike.
- 6:25You know the saying, one plants and another harvests.
- 6:29And it's true. I sent you to harvest where you
- 6:32didn't plant. Others had already done the work
- 6:35and now you will get to gather the harvest.
- 6:39Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the
- 6:43woman had said, He told me everything I ever did.
- 6:47When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their
- 6:50village. So he stayed for two days, long
- 6:53enough for many more to hear his message and believe, they said
- 6:58to the woman. Now we believe not just because
- 7:01of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves.
- 7:06Now we know that he is indeed the Saviour of the world.
- 7:12At the end of the two days, Jesus went on to Galilee.
- 7:16He himself had said that a prophet is not honoured in his
- 7:19own home town. Yet the Galileans welcomed him,
- 7:23for they had been in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration and
- 7:27had seen everything he did there.
- 7:29As he travelled through Galilee, he came to Canada, where he had
- 7:33turned the water into wine. There was a government official
- 7:37in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick.
- 7:41When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he
- 7:44went and begged Jesus to come to Capernaum to heal his son who
- 7:48was about to die. Jesus asked.
- 7:51Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs
- 7:55and wonders? The official pleaded.
- 7:58Lord, please come now before my little boy dies.
- 8:03Then Jesus told him, go back home, your son will live.
- 8:08And the man believed what Jesus said and started home.
- 8:11While the man was on his way, some of his servants met him
- 8:14with the news that his son was alive and well.
- 8:17He asked him when the boy had begun to get better, and they
- 8:20replied. Yesterday afternoon at 1:00 his
- 8:24fever suddenly disappeared. Then his father realised that
- 8:28that was the very time Jesus had told him Your son will live and
- 8:33he and his entire household believed in Jesus.
- 8:37This was the 2nd miraculous sign Jesus did in Galilee after
- 8:41coming from Judea. Jesus, thank You that You don't
- 8:55just come to fill our peripheral needs, to make us feel good, to
- 9:01scratch that itch that just came up on our shoulder, but you come
- 9:06to pour your living water of eternal life deep into our souls
- 9:13to satisfy our spirits completely.
- 9:16And of course you do. And of course, you know exactly
- 9:19what we need, because you made us, You lovingly crafted us, and
- 9:24we are your people. Thank you that you continue to
- 9:29care for us, to love us, to provide exactly what it is that
- 9:35our spirits need. Help us to rest in you as the
- 9:40provider of everything that our heart desires and our spirit
- 9:45yearns. For that we don't need to look
- 9:47anywhere else. You are a loving God and our
- 9:52ample Saviour, and we give you all the praise.
- 9:57In your name we pray Jesus. Amen.
