- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to Tabernacle talk.
- 0:17If you're watching the video podcast, you might notice I'm in
- 0:20a new room and that is because my room is my office is getting
- 0:26prepped to get painted. And so it is a it's actually a
- 0:31pretty clean. There's a lot of books, but it
- 0:34is a clean mess right now. So I'm looking forward to
- 0:40getting back in quote UN quote, the studio after that is done
- 0:44and incredibly grateful for some of my church family kind of
- 0:48putting that together so that that room was able to get
- 0:51painted. I actually found some items in
- 0:55the room from 2011, so about 15 years ago, found some things
- 1:03that were hiding behind a dresser and I was like, man,
- 1:06that is so cool. And I'm thankful for a ministry
- 1:09that's been continuing for many years, 76 years this year, and
- 1:14just incredibly grateful for all that God has done and is doing.
- 1:19Today. We are taking a very short
- 1:22break. This is the final episode of,
- 1:24quote UN quote, the break from the book of Isaiah.
- 1:27And today we are in Luke 15 verses 11 through 32.
- 1:33Luke 15 verses 11 through 32. This is often known as the
- 1:39parable of the lost son or the prodigal son.
- 1:43Really, the point of this parable is the prodigal sons.
- 1:50It is both sons that did not have the relationship with their
- 1:54father that the father wanted to have with them and how that is
- 1:59navigated. So let's walk through.
- 2:02This is one of my favorite portions of scripture.
- 2:04I've tossed into the descriptions like show notes for
- 2:08this episode. A great song written from this
- 2:10passage called Run to the Father by Cody Carnes and I love that
- 2:15song. I've sung it a couple times here
- 2:17at Tabernacle, many times at my church in Washington, Moses Lake
- 2:22Baptist and so excited to dive into this portion of scripture
- 2:26with you. So Jesus is giving 3 different
- 2:31stories, 3 parables, which is a lesson like an earthly story
- 2:35with a heavenly meaning to the tax collectors or sorry rather
- 2:41to the Pharisees and scribes who were complaining that Jesus was
- 2:45eating with tax collectors and sinners.
- 2:48So Jesus is there, He's at a meal, He's with people that were
- 2:52viewed as traitors to God's people through unfair and unjust
- 3:00excessive taxation that they would levy out on their own
- 3:05people, the Jewish people. And so the tax collectors were
- 3:08viewed as allies of Rome, not allies of their own people,
- 3:12Israel. They were viewed as financially
- 3:15abusive and extortionary. We've seen even in the stories
- 3:21of Matthew or Levi and in the story of Zacchaeus, how Jesus
- 3:28didn't say just because you have been a bad person in the past
- 3:33means you cannot be a disciple. God reaches out to and he loves
- 3:38the people that we think he should never reach out to.
- 3:41And then not only does it say the tax collectors, it says and
- 3:45sinners, these would be those viewed as particularly immoral
- 3:52in in different passages throughout the Gospels, you'll
- 3:55see the Pharisees say that Jesus he eats, he's he's friends with
- 4:00tax collectors and prostitutes. And so even as we see Jesus that
- 4:05everyone that our world would completely write off to say,
- 4:09yeah, there's no way that person can have a relationship with
- 4:12God. Jesus is constantly reaching
- 4:15out. The Pharisees inscribes the very
- 4:17religious, the holiest of the holy ones, quote, UN quote in
- 4:21Israel at that time they were upset about this and so Jesus
- 4:25gives 3 parables. This is the last of those
- 4:29parables. In answer to that objection,
- 4:32here's what he says. A man had two sons, the younger
- 4:37of them said to his father, Father, give me the share of the
- 4:41estate I have coming to me. So he distributed the assets to
- 4:46them. So in essence, this younger son
- 4:50says to his father, you're as good to, you're as good as dead
- 4:55to me. I don't want a relationship with
- 4:57you. When the father would pass, the
- 5:01older son would receive kind of a double portion.
- 5:05He would receive 2/3 of everything that the father had
- 5:08possessed. And then the younger son would
- 5:11get 1/3 of the possessions. So here the younger son says,
- 5:15just give me a third of, you know, the value of everything
- 5:19that you have. You're as good as dead to me.
- 5:22And so then in verse #13 not many days later, the younger son
- 5:27gathered together all he had and traveled to a distant country
- 5:31where he squandered his estate in foolish living.
- 5:36So all of the people there listening to this story would
- 5:40go, yeah, that's that's what he gets.
- 5:42This is a violation of the commandment to honor your father
- 5:46and mother, not treat them like they're dead.
- 5:49So he dishonored his father and mother.
- 5:50And so they would be saying, like, yeah, this is great.
- 5:53This is what he gets for being disrespectful.
- 5:57Then in verse #14 it even goes further.
- 6:01It says after he had spent everything, a severe famine
- 6:05struck that country and he had nothing.
- 6:09They would view this as, Oh yes, this is just like the famine
- 6:14that God brought on Israel during the time of Ahab and
- 6:18Jezebel where they needed to turn to God and they didn't.
- 6:23And so yes, this is exactly what happens to bad people.
- 6:28Verse #15 Then he went to work for one of the citizens of that
- 6:31country who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.
- 6:37By now you might actually have like cheers of joy and
- 6:41excitement coming from the Pharisees and scribes.
- 6:45This is a person that is now not only violated the commandments,
- 6:50suffered consequences as a result, but now they were viewed
- 6:54as no longer being like one of God's people.
- 6:57They were shut out from the community of faith in Israel as
- 7:02a result of the fact that he is eating or he's he's feeding
- 7:06pigs, which were unclean animals.
- 7:08This would have been horrific in that culture to think about
- 7:13being one that would feed the pigs.
- 7:16And then we read this in verse #16 he longed to eat his fill
- 7:21from the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one would give
- 7:25him anything. He is even now lower than an
- 7:30unclean UN kosher animal and he can't even get permission to eat
- 7:36pig food. So he is at the absolute bottom
- 7:39rung. The Pharisees and scribes would
- 7:41probably have said, like, man, what a wonderful story.
- 7:44You tax collectors and sinners. You have squandered the gifts
- 7:48that God has given you and so you need to repent of your sin.
- 7:54You need to stop doing evil but also like this is the end that
- 7:58is waiting for you. It would be a self-righteous We
- 8:01are the ones like the older son that stayed that didn't dishonor
- 8:06his father and you guys are the ones that have dishonored your
- 8:09father God and have squandered and lived evilly.
- 8:15That's where they would end the story.
- 8:18I want to stop right here and ask you right now, what are you
- 8:23thinking in relation to this story?
- 8:25In truth, every single one of us probably have some ways in which
- 8:29we're like the older brother, that we do some things right, We
- 8:33love or respect God. We do some things that are
- 8:36expected of us, and all of us can fit into this mold of the
- 8:41younger son. At times that we've done things
- 8:44that God has said not to do, we have found ourselves on the end
- 8:48of what we might consider to be hardships brought on through our
- 8:55bad choices. And so we we could say, yeah,
- 8:58I've, I've been there. I've been at rock bottom, you
- 9:00know, unable to get pig food, you know, pigs at, at farms.
- 9:05They never have to wonder about where their next meal is coming
- 9:09from. But man, I, I've been in that
- 9:11boat where I don't know where that next meal is going to come
- 9:15from. Verse #17 Jesus says when he
- 9:18came to his senses, he said, how many of my father's hired
- 9:22workers have more than enough food?
- 9:25And here I am dying of hunger. He goes even those ones that
- 9:29like they're not the sons of my father, they're just the hired
- 9:32hands, but they have more than enough food in their life and
- 9:35I'm starving here. We're summer 18.
- 9:38He says, I'll get up, go to my father and say to him, so you
- 9:42can think about it. He goes, all right, I'm, I'm
- 9:44going to go from this far country back to dad's house and
- 9:47I have this script that I'm going to say to dad.
- 9:50He says, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight
- 9:55that there's a recognition of fault against God ultimately and
- 10:00a fault against humanity. Realize this, when you sin, you
- 10:05do not just sin against a holy God and need forgiveness from
- 10:09him. We need to seek forgiveness and
- 10:13repentance and restitution towards one another as fellow
- 10:17image bearers of God. You can be if you will.
- 10:22You can ask for forgiveness from God, but the genuineness of our
- 10:27repentance is often seen in if we are seeking to be reconciled
- 10:34with our fellow man, if you will.
- 10:37The word righteousness is it's right standing with God and with
- 10:42people. So you can see this in the story
- 10:44of Zacchaeus where he repents, he recognizes his evil, but then
- 10:49it results in him paying back four times what he unlawfully
- 10:55stole from people on top of Rome's taxes.
- 10:59So there he has, as John the Baptist would put it, he has
- 11:03fruits in keeping with repentance.
- 11:06This is what it looks like to truly have my will aligned with
- 11:12the will of God. So he says, Father, I've sinned
- 11:16against heaven and in your sight I'm no longer worthy to be
- 11:20called your son. Everyone listening to the story
- 11:22would go, yeah, absolutely. Like, that makes total sense.
- 11:26That's that's the kind of thing that would happen.
- 11:28You would be disowned. There's no way that he can then
- 11:31come back into his father's good graces.
- 11:33But he says, make me like one of your hired workers.
- 11:37They go, yeah, you know, he, he can be a slave.
- 11:39He'd be deeply dishonored, but he could certainly be a slave
- 11:44within that house. Verse #20 So he got up and went
- 11:50to his father. He's got the script.
- 11:52He knows exactly what he's going to say.
- 11:54He's going to say, listen, I know that I'm disowned.
- 11:56I know that I am unwanted as family, but I can work for you.
- 12:02Think about it from a salvation aspect.
- 12:05God, I recognize that I am not perfect, but God, I will do
- 12:10things for you. I will obey you.
- 12:13I will read my Bible, I will go to church, I will pay tithes and
- 12:17offerings and God, I'm going to pursue all of the good things
- 12:22that I should have been doing all along and, and maybe you
- 12:25will allow me to have some blessings in my life as I do
- 12:28these things. Verse #20 continues.
- 12:33But while the sun was still a long way off, his father saw him
- 12:40and was filled with everyone could imagine the next word
- 12:44being rage. He was filled with anger.
- 12:46He was filled with bitterness or resentment.
- 12:50But that is not how our God sees us when we come running to Him a
- 12:56long way off, imperfect, flawed, failing.
- 13:00When He sees us a long way off, He is filled with compassion.
- 13:07I love one of the words for compassion in the Greek language
- 13:12is the word splagic non. It is a moving, a deep moving
- 13:17and emotion feeling from one's gut.
- 13:21Very literally, it's like your splagic non are your intestines,
- 13:25but it's from the depths of my being.
- 13:28I am moved with love and compassion for you.
- 13:33Do you realize that that is the way that your God views you
- 13:36today? He does not view you as on
- 13:39probation. He does not view you with angry
- 13:42eyes. But for every person that has
- 13:44cried out to Jesus to say, God, I have sinned, I am no longer
- 13:49worthy to be called your Son. That He sees us and He has
- 13:53compassion and love for us because His mercy, His steadfast
- 13:58love, endures forever. So he sees his son.
- 14:03He's filled with compassion. And if that was where it
- 14:05stopped, man, what a wonderful truth that as the son comes, he
- 14:09comes not to an angry father, not to a vengeful father, but he
- 14:12comes to a compassionate father. But that's not what happens.
- 14:16So his father is filled with compassion, and he ran.
- 14:23Running was viewed during this time period as something that
- 14:26was for, you know, messengers. It's for slaves or servants.
- 14:31It is not for the people that are dignified, the heads of
- 14:36households, those that are masters, those were not the
- 14:40people that ran. You would send someone else
- 14:42because, you know, everyone looks a little goofy when they
- 14:45run, unless you're, you know, Usain Bolt or something.
- 14:48All the rest of us, we look goofy when we run.
- 14:51But the father, he ran to his son and it says he threw his
- 14:57arms around his neck and kissed him.
- 15:01There is embrace, there is love, there is closeness that is there
- 15:07between the Father and the Son that squandered everything, that
- 15:12was cut off from everyone else, that suffered all of the
- 15:18deprivation that life could offer.
- 15:21When we turn in our hearts and faith to God, He comes running
- 15:27to us, filled with compassion, embraces us, places us into the
- 15:32body of Christ that we would be ever more a part of His family.
- 15:35We are adopted children of God even still.
- 15:41The Son says this in verse 21. Father, I have sinned against
- 15:46heaven and in your sight I am no longer worthy to be called your
- 15:50son. And so then his next line is
- 15:52like, make me as one of make me one of your hired servants.
- 15:55But before he can get the last part of his speech out, verse
- 15:5922, the father told his servants, quick, bring out the
- 16:03best robe. He doesn't just say bring out a
- 16:05robe, He says bring the best robe.
- 16:07God does not have subpar things in store for you and for me.
- 16:13No matter our imperfections or our sin, God cannot give less
- 16:18than his best. God is the one that gives good
- 16:21and perfect gifts. He is not the one whoever gives
- 16:25anything haphazardly or shoddy. And So what God has in store for
- 16:30us is his best. He says put on the best robe.
- 16:33And you can think even of the fact that we are clothed now as
- 16:36believers in Jesus, in the righteousness of Christ, that
- 16:40when God looks at us, he does not see our imperfections.
- 16:43He sees the perfection of Jesus. It has been attributed to our
- 16:48account through faith in Christ that we've been made one with
- 16:51Jesus. And so as a result, everything
- 16:54that he has, his, his glory, His love, His righteousness, His
- 16:58peace, His joy, all of it is ours through faith in Christ.
- 17:05So we are given the best robe. He says, bring out the best robe
- 17:08and put it on him, put a ring on his finger and sandals on his
- 17:12feet. Here this man did not even have
- 17:16shoes or sandals to walk in. And God provides for his needs.
- 17:21The Father provides for the need of the Son and a ring is put on
- 17:25his finger, signifying identity with the family.
- 17:30We have this even still with like husbands and wives that
- 17:34they wear rings that say, you know, we're we're connected to
- 17:36each other. You can think of it like with a
- 17:40a king or a signet ring, something like that that would
- 17:43say this person belongs to this family.
- 17:47And here the father says, no, the son is not one of my hired
- 17:50servants. And even though through his
- 17:53actions maybe he might have no longer been worthy to be called
- 17:58the father Son, the father nevertheless calls him his son
- 18:03and gives him the ring, and he is part of the family.
- 18:07Then in verse #23 he says, Then bring the fattened calf and
- 18:12slaughter it. And let's celebrate with a
- 18:15feast, because this son of mine was dead and is alive again.
- 18:20He was lost and is found. So they began to celebrate here.
- 18:27If there had not been a feast, the Father would have been
- 18:31lavish in his love for his Son. But he feasted, He celebrated.
- 18:38And you can think about it. Every single time that we
- 18:41observe the Lord's Supper together, we participate in this
- 18:44feast of those who were once lost.
- 18:48But through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus, now we have been
- 18:51brought to the family table to feast and to celebrate together.
- 18:56What a joy because we were dead and now we've been made alive.
- 19:01Through Christ we were lost, but now we are found.
- 19:06What a wonderful story. But that's not where the story
- 19:09ends. Verse #25 Now his older son was
- 19:15in the field. As he came near the house, he
- 19:17heard music and dancing. So he summoned one of the
- 19:20servants, questioning what these things meant.
- 19:22Your brother is here, he told him, and your father has
- 19:25slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and
- 19:30sound. This should be a time of
- 19:32rejoicing, just as Jesus with the tax collectors and sinners
- 19:36who have come to know and have relationship with the Son of
- 19:40God. Verse #28 Then he became angry
- 19:45and didn't want to go in, so his father came out and pleaded with
- 19:49him, just as Jesus here is pleading with the Pharisees and
- 19:53the scribes to have a love for the people that were broken
- 19:58relentlessly, hopelessly broken, and yet now have been returned
- 20:03back to the Father. So the father came out and
- 20:06pleaded with him, but he replied to his father.
- 20:07Look, I've been slaving many years for you.
- 20:11And I've never disobeyed your orders.
- 20:13You never gave me a goat so that I could celebrate with my
- 20:16friends. Here there is the mindset that
- 20:20the son was the older son was operating with.
- 20:24I am a slave for my father. Did you read that word?
- 20:27I've been slaving many years for you.
- 20:30How do you view your service to the Lord?
- 20:33Is it in relationship? Is it joyful?
- 20:37Are you happy to serve God? Are you happy to serve his
- 20:40people, the church? Or do you view it as drudgery,
- 20:45as slavery? Let's have a joyful heart when
- 20:48it comes to our service for the Lord.
- 20:51It isn't something that we have to do for God.
- 20:54It is something that we get to do in a relationship with him so
- 20:58that what God wants to accomplish, he accomplishes
- 21:01through me and through you. That is the joy of serving God.
- 21:07Then the the older son says, but when this son of yours came, who
- 21:11has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you slaughtered the
- 21:15fattened calf for him, he, he says he wasted the money that
- 21:19you gave him and now you're celebrating that he's back.
- 21:24But then this is what the father says in verse 31, son, he said
- 21:28to him, you are always with me. The joy in life is not that we
- 21:37get to do things for God. The joy in the Christian life is
- 21:42that we get to be with God. That is Holy Spirit lives inside
- 21:46of us that as we gathered together as believers that the
- 21:49Spirit of Jesus is among us, we are with him.
- 21:54And then he says, and everything I have is yours.
- 21:57The younger son, he already took his inheritance.
- 22:00So everything that the Father possesses belongs to the older
- 22:04son. Can I tell you everything that
- 22:08belongs to Jesus is coming for us as well.
- 22:11We're told that we are joint heirs, Co heirs with Christ and
- 22:16that we have God's eternal blessings and love and and joy
- 22:20awaiting us on the other side of eternity.
- 22:24No matter what happens to us in the here and now in this life,
- 22:28we have everything awaiting us. Everything that the Father has
- 22:34is coming for his children and nothing that anyone else does
- 22:38will ever dampen our inheritance.
- 22:41So love lavishly. If you have to spend and be
- 22:47spent for others, do so knowing that God is with you and that
- 22:52everything He has will belong to us.
- 22:56Verse #32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice because
- 23:02this brother of yours was dead and is alive again.
- 23:06He was lost and is found. What kind of mindset do you have
- 23:11around the imperfect people around you?
- 23:15Those that you think you know they're, they're just always
- 23:19looking for a handout. They are just always failing,
- 23:25gossiping, not being careful enough, not being consistent
- 23:30enough. The temptation for many people
- 23:34that are very religious and very regimented, very disciplined in
- 23:38our religiosity is that we can become the older brother.
- 23:42And instead of looking to Jesus and his grace in the
- 23:45relationship we have with him and the inheritance that awaits
- 23:48us in heaven, we're focused on the here and now.
- 23:51We're focused on how imperfect we perceive others to be in
- 23:56comparison with our own quote UN quote holiness, my friends, let
- 24:00us not be like the Pharisees and the scribes.
- 24:02Let us rejoice for those that were dead, that were lost, but
- 24:07now are alive and are found. That concludes kind of my
- 24:12section through some of my favorite passages in Scripture.
- 24:15I'm looking forward to jumping back into Isaiah with I believe
- 24:17it's Isaiah 15 next episode and I believe that'll come out on
- 24:22Monday. Looking forward to it.
- 24:24God bless.
