- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am

- 0:10be a farmer. This is my Chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast.
- 0:15To. Teach distinctions,
- 0:17possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring some.
- 0:20Joy into the world, so welcome to the.
- 0:22Coop and let's start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. So we're actually in my studio
- 0:31this morning and I'm standing in front of a whiteboard because I
- 0:35am working on a project that I haven't done in a long time and
- 0:39years, many, many years. And it's a self timeline now,
- 0:45what the heck is this, right? Sounds interesting.
- 0:47Maybe sounds like why the hell would you be doing this?
- 0:50However, it is a very, very big project of self discovery.
- 0:54So think about this. You draw a line, whether you
- 0:57have a whiteboard or many pieces of paper, big, small, whatever,
- 1:01you're drawing a line across that paper and you're starting
- 1:04to timeline things in your life that most of the time when you
- 1:09do this exercise, they'll tell you to do it with big things,
- 1:12like timeline the big things in your life that happened so you
- 1:16can see them because it's really interesting to see how much and
- 1:20how far you've come. So you put out these big things
- 1:23in your life and you start to recognize that you can see a
- 1:26pattern with it and it really helps you, but it also helps you
- 1:29celebrate how far you've come, the unique things about you.
- 1:32It's a really fascinating experiment.
- 1:34Now, the trick to this for me, when I did it the first time, I
- 1:38was told to do it with the big items.
- 1:40So I did. Later on, maybe a year after
- 1:44that, I found the papers and I started looking at it and I
- 1:47started going, I wonder what are the less significant things that
- 1:52I could add in there, things that I remembered.
- 1:54So when we say they're less significant, like a significant
- 1:57thing that was on my original timeline was my dad passing
- 2:01away. So it my life was almost like
- 2:04everything before dad passed away and everything after dad
- 2:08passed away, they could see that that was a significant event.
- 2:11There was another significant event when I was 11, he had a
- 2:15heart attack. So that was one of those, oh,
- 2:19that was a significant event in my life.
- 2:22Everything prior to that was one thing and everything after that
- 2:25was one thing. You could start to see how I
- 2:28developed certain things, but in the second time I did it, I
- 2:32started to go through and really think about the smaller things
- 2:35that I could remember. They still had an impact, but
- 2:38they were significantly smaller. They weren't like a death, but
- 2:42they were impactful. They started to shape me as a
- 2:46person and what I noticed in that really helped me create the
- 2:51next levels of things that I wanted to get past.
- 2:54Because sometimes once you go back and, and it's not about
- 2:57processing the events, I, I, this is not an exercise of
- 3:01processing events. What it is, is saying that event
- 3:04happened at this point in my life.
- 3:06It's an identifier. So you start to notice little
- 3:09blips, little things that come up.
- 3:11And for me, it was very telltale about how the certainty girl was
- 3:17born, how she like had to take over where my insecurities, like
- 3:23I could see, oh, this event happened.
- 3:25And then I, I started to, you know, act a certain way and it
- 3:29allowed me to, to consider and contemplate, okay, if this
- 3:34happened and this happened and this happened, then I can
- 3:37actually shift moving forward by focusing on making something
- 3:42different happen. So the exercise, why I'm putting
- 3:46this out there for everybody is based on its curiosity.
- 3:50I mean, have you ever considered all the things that you've
- 3:52survived in your life and gone through in your life and the
- 3:55things that have happened? Because we spend so much time
- 3:58ruminating on the very, the past that just happened.
- 4:02Most of the time it's it's pretty recent past and we forget
- 4:07how much we have conquered, how much we have traversed through
- 4:13all of this. And then by doing that, we take
- 4:16away our ability to celebrate, our ability to say, wow, OK,
- 4:21look at me go, I've done a lot. And it robs us of that grand
- 4:25experience. And it is a grand experience to
- 4:29be able to say, look at this like when I think back, I'm
- 4:32like, wow, holy cow, how, how did I even do that?
- 4:36So I get to really like pat myself on the back a little bit
- 4:39and be like, OK, this is good because no one else is patting
- 4:42us on the back. If we don't pat ourselves on the
- 4:44back, we're never going to get anywhere.
- 4:46We have to be able to pat ourselves on the back.
- 4:48Have faith that we are all connected to something bigger
- 4:52and celebrate that. But it really does help to do
- 4:56the timeline. So I'm going to throw it out
- 4:58there. Try it, do it.
- 5:00Now I will say this, we've had people do this in the past as an
- 5:04exercise and sometimes they choose to do it with post it
- 5:10notes. So they make it a post it note
- 5:12for each event and they stick it up on the wall or something.
- 5:17Now you can do it however you like, but I will tell you if
- 5:20this is going to be a long project and you're going to keep
- 5:22doing it, post it notes fall off the wall and it's really
- 5:25irritating. So find a way to make sure you
- 5:28don't lose it. I like straight lines, I like
- 5:33neatness, so I'm going to do it on a piece of paper.
- 5:36I'm going to do it on something that I can put a ruler on.
- 5:40I'm going to make sure I have a nice pen that writes smoothly so
- 5:44that it's there and I don't have to recreate it.
- 5:47I don't like having to do things over and over if I've done them
- 5:50once. So just get yourself organized
- 5:53for it. Sit down and just start from
- 5:55where your earliest memories bring you up and start with the
- 5:59majors and move into the minors and see what you come up with
- 6:02and really celebrate how far you've come, because I can
- 6:06assure you, if you're listening to this, it's pretty damn far.
- 6:10All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 6:12will see you tomorrow. Bye.
