Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, everybody, Greetings from Detroit, Michigan.
- 0:27Speaker 1: That we are in a hotel room right now in
- 0:30Speaker 1: downtown Detroit, about five minutes away from the NFL Draft Theater.
- 0:33Speaker 1: And it is approximately three pm Eastern on Wednesday, which
- 0:38Speaker 1: is just over twenty four hours away from the NFL
- 0:42Speaker 1: Draft's first round. And I put this tweet out yesterday
- 0:47Speaker 1: that I think there's gonna be a lot of trades.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I doubled down today with a tweet that I said,
- 0:52Speaker 1: I referenced it on Pat McAfee. I think we might
- 0:54Speaker 1: get ten trades in the first round. And that's because
- 0:58Speaker 1: everybody I'm talking with is like, Oh, this team's trading up,
- 1:00Speaker 1: that team's trading back, this team's looking to trade up,
- 1:02Speaker 1: this team's trading to trade back. I figured this podcast episode,
- 1:07Speaker 1: if you're listening, you just want content, content content. I'm
- 1:09Speaker 1: not on television at the moment, so let's do it
- 1:12Speaker 1: over podcasts and just empty the notebook. It's going to
- 1:15Speaker 1: be rather quick compared to the hour long interviews we've
- 1:19Speaker 1: had with coaches and coordinators in the past, but this
- 1:22Speaker 1: is our latest thinking as of around three o'clock on Wednesday.
- 1:26Speaker 1: And if you're listening to this at the gym on
- 1:28Speaker 1: Wednesday night, and I know that's optimistic assuming people go
- 1:30Speaker 1: to the gym. I always say the gym, but I
- 1:33Speaker 1: really mean as you're sitting at home playing video games
- 1:37Speaker 1: with this on, or driving in a car in traffic.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Here's some things to note, and I'll go through it
- 1:42Speaker 1: team by team, and then I think maybe big picture stuff.
- 1:46Speaker 1: The first point I would make is that I do
- 1:49Speaker 1: believe there is going to be close to a dozen
- 1:52Speaker 1: trades made in the first round that would be record breaking.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I think that this is one of those years where
- 1:59Speaker 1: there are some quarterbacks that teams might want to trade
- 2:03Speaker 1: up and down for, but it's not even about the quarterbacks.
- 2:05Speaker 1: It's about the wide receivers, the tackles, and then the
- 2:08Speaker 1: few defensive players. So I actually think it might go
- 2:12Speaker 1: somewhat chalk one, two, three, four, And we'll get into
- 2:16Speaker 1: my mock draft in part two on this, but as
- 2:20Speaker 1: I have it right now, I've got Caleb going one
- 2:22Speaker 1: to the Bears the Commanders. I'll open the door. It
- 2:26Speaker 1: did get Harry for a while there over the weekend,
- 2:28Speaker 1: I heard all sorts of stuff that he might not
- 2:31Speaker 1: want to go there, and you know, and then it's
- 2:34Speaker 1: if you're Washington, and if he even had the inclination
- 2:36Speaker 1: of I might not want to go there three days ago,
- 2:39Speaker 1: Like do you say we'll screw you, like this isn't free,
- 2:42Speaker 1: We'll take Drake Mayo, We'll be fine, or do you
- 2:45Speaker 1: just say, okay, once we get him in the building,
- 2:47Speaker 1: it'll be all good, because there is no doubt. And
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'm telling you this is real, that Jaden Daniels and
- 2:52Speaker 1: Antonio Pierce have a great relationship and that whole you know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: connection to the Raiders is real. But the Raiders don't
- 2:58Speaker 1: have them or the ability to go up from thirteen
- 3:01Speaker 1: to two. So earlier this week, Jayden Daniels publicist, and
- 3:05Speaker 1: I think that stuff Denise White came out and she's
- 3:08Speaker 1: been an NFL publicist for many stars. She's dealt in
- 3:11Speaker 1: crisis communication. Like I've heard her name and I don't
- 3:14Speaker 1: know her personally, but I've seen her stuff for years.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And she wrote on Twitter, Jaden Daniels is excited to
- 3:18Speaker 1: be part of the NFL and whatever he is, wherever
- 3:20Speaker 1: he is drafted, he will be happy to be part
- 3:22Speaker 1: of that organization. So I'm done, like that's it. But
- 3:24Speaker 1: then if you're Washington, you're like, dude, like, we're about
- 3:28Speaker 1: to put all of our faith in you. New coach,
- 3:31Speaker 1: new owner, new GM, new offensive coordinator, new team president,
- 3:37Speaker 1: new Bob Myers is involved. And then we just got
- 3:40Speaker 1: you know, these other guys involved. We have a whole
- 3:42Speaker 1: new front offense, Lance new Mark, Adam Peters always got
- 3:45Speaker 1: do we want to start things off with a quarterback
- 3:48Speaker 1: who says, you know, I will be happy with whatever
- 3:50Speaker 1: team I go to, as opposed to I want to
- 3:52Speaker 1: be a commander. I see Terry McLaurin and John Dotson,
- 3:55Speaker 1: and I want to be a commander. I think by
- 3:57Speaker 1: the time the draft comes, that will all be all settled.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And I got him going to to commanders. Three is
- 4:02Speaker 1: the Patriots. I'm gonna give you an analogy for the Patriots,
- 4:04Speaker 1: because there's been a lot of rumors about the Patriots
- 4:09Speaker 1: looking to trade back, and I even said it on
- 4:11Speaker 1: McAfee that they could trade back and then still get
- 4:14Speaker 1: McCarthy if they trade back a little, if they fall
- 4:16Speaker 1: in love with McCarthy. Here's how I see it, though.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Here's an analogy I would make and Aaron, my producer,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you're on the mic right, your mic is working, let's
- 4:26Speaker 1: say testing. Let's get you in there.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yep, yep, I'm here. I'm ready for this beautiful analogy.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Make sure here's it all right. There's a house on
- 4:36Speaker 1: the block that forever just has a for sale sign
- 4:39Speaker 1: in front of it, and it's a beautiful house, and
- 4:41Speaker 1: every time you drive by, you're like, Wow, that house
- 4:43Speaker 1: is for sale, and that house is for sale, and
- 4:45Speaker 1: they do have open houses and people come and looking through.
- 4:48Speaker 1: It just never gets sold and the asking price might
- 4:52Speaker 1: be too high, or the owners don't actually want to
- 4:54Speaker 1: sell it. They just like to hear offers and be
- 4:57Speaker 1: told what this exists in America. That's the Patriots right now.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I don't think they're looking to sell the third pick.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I think Drake may is fine, is going to be
- 5:07Speaker 1: the future of this team. He's twenty one years old,
- 5:09Speaker 1: he's six foot four, he's a great kid. It comes
- 5:11Speaker 1: from an out sports family. Like you're the Patriots. You're
- 5:15Speaker 1: not looking at me in the top five anytime soon.
- 5:18Speaker 1: You're not going to have an opportunity to get these quarterbacks.
- 5:20Speaker 1: You know, as often as you you know, as often
- 5:23Speaker 1: as they come, take the quarterback. I don't care what
- 5:26Speaker 1: the offer is from Minnesota. Take the quarterback, because say
- 5:28Speaker 1: Minnesota offers you the eleven, the twenty three next year's
- 5:32Speaker 1: for so what if you don't have a quarterback, so
- 5:34Speaker 1: what so what? So at eleven you might get JJ
- 5:37Speaker 1: McCarthy and and that, okay, fine. I think it's Drake May.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And whether or not Jonathan Kraft is heavily involved or not,
- 5:46Speaker 1: I think that the football people, and Jonathan Craft probably included,
- 5:50Speaker 1: are like, get the quarterback. Let's start filling the building
- 5:53Speaker 1: because it was bleak at times last year in those
- 5:55Speaker 1: home games for the Patriots, and with Jacoby Brissett making
- 5:59Speaker 1: eight to ten million dollars, that's a serviceable veteran guy.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Bring in a rookie Drake May, third or all to
- 6:06Speaker 1: the Patriots. Cardinals. Chalk would have Marvin Harrison. I think
- 6:12Speaker 1: Marvin Harrison makes a lot of sense. There's your Larry
- 6:14Speaker 1: Fitzgerald for the next two decades if you can get
- 6:18Speaker 1: them in there. And it's fine. Where things get interesting
- 6:20Speaker 1: and where my notes really begin, as we'll do a
- 6:22Speaker 1: mock draft on part two on this thing. But the
- 6:25Speaker 1: things get interesting at five to me because there's multiple
- 6:27Speaker 1: things happening here. One, the Chargers will not be taking
- 6:31Speaker 1: a quarterback, and there's one quarterback left with the grade
- 6:36Speaker 1: that's worthy of being in the spot, and there are
- 6:38Speaker 1: probably three or four teams that might be interested. So
- 6:40Speaker 1: then it becomes a bit of a feeding frenzy. Who's
- 6:42Speaker 1: gonna be able to go up and get them? Who
- 6:43Speaker 1: wants them? And if the Chargers are at five, do
- 6:46Speaker 1: they trade him to the highest bidder? Do they end
- 6:49Speaker 1: up just taking their guy? Because you could end up
- 6:52Speaker 1: missing out on a top tackler or top wide receiver
- 6:55Speaker 1: if you move too far down in the draft here.
- 6:57Speaker 1: So the Chargers at five become really interesting. The other
- 7:00Speaker 1: little rinkle I've heard, and you'll start hearing this more,
- 7:03Speaker 1: i'm sure over the next few hours, is that as
- 7:07Speaker 1: great as Joe alt is, who is a high school
- 7:11Speaker 1: legend at of Minnesota, a Notre Dame legend, a Notre Dame, and.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Was the.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Consensus top left tackle in this draft, Jc Latham, three
- 7:21Speaker 1: hundred and forty pound maller out of Alabama might fit
- 7:27Speaker 1: what Jim Harbaugh is trying to build. And they already
- 7:29Speaker 1: have Forshawn Slater as a left tackle, so that might
- 7:33Speaker 1: be the first wildcard. JC Latham being taken to the
- 7:36Speaker 1: Chargers before Joe Alt and Joe Walt still being on
- 7:40Speaker 1: the board. I've heard that from a few teams that
- 7:42Speaker 1: if you look at what Greg Roman's offenses have been,
- 7:45Speaker 1: if you look at what Harbaugh has done, and if
- 7:47Speaker 1: you think about the Alabama connection that Ozzie Knewsome had
- 7:52Speaker 1: and now Joe Hortiz, who spent twenty eight years with
- 7:54Speaker 1: the Baltimore Ravens now comes over and the Chargers, there's
- 7:57Speaker 1: an Alabama connection there. Could JC Latham go before Joe Alt?
- 8:02Speaker 1: That's something to watch. Okay, more stuff there. Would they
- 8:07Speaker 1: ever trade with the Raiders or the Broncos. Probably not.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I don't think they're going to trade with those teams
- 8:14Speaker 1: and let them get a quarterback so that they can
- 8:16Speaker 1: play them twice a year and have to deal with
- 8:18Speaker 1: knowing that they gave their division rivals the opportunity to
- 8:21Speaker 1: have JJ McCarthy, which really limits the quarterback teams for
- 8:25Speaker 1: McCarthy to the five spot to the Vikings, and does
- 8:29Speaker 1: that give leverage to the Vikings? Think about the chess
- 8:31Speaker 1: game here now, if they're not going to trade with
- 8:33Speaker 1: the Raiders or the Broncos. And there have been trades
- 8:36Speaker 1: within the division in the NFL Draft before, like Jamison
- 8:39Speaker 1: Williams was traded from the Vikings to the Lions in
- 8:42Speaker 1: a draft, and I believe the Cowboys and Eagles did
- 8:46Speaker 1: one and the deal that got Devonte Smith like that
- 8:50Speaker 1: and Mark Micha Parsons. I think that was on Draft
- 8:52Speaker 1: Day and somehow those two teams did come to terms
- 8:55Speaker 1: to a trade. But I don't know when you're talking
- 8:58Speaker 1: about a quarterback, like would the Chargers on a silver
- 9:01Speaker 1: platter give the Broncos and Raiders a chance to get
- 9:04Speaker 1: JJ McCarthy. I don't see it. Just competitively. I don't
- 9:08Speaker 1: see Jim Harbaugh doing Sean Payton and the Broncos any
- 9:11Speaker 1: favors and handing JJ McCarthy over. So in that case,
- 9:15Speaker 1: it really becomes just the Vikings. Now, if you're the Vikings,
- 9:20Speaker 1: you have the eleven, the twenty three, you don't have
- 9:23Speaker 1: a second, you have a third, and then next year
- 9:26Speaker 1: I don't think you have a whole bounty of picks
- 9:30Speaker 1: that you can offer. So if you're the Vikings, is
- 9:34Speaker 1: it eleven and twenty three up to five for JJ? McCarthy. Well,
- 9:37Speaker 1: it sounds like that's the bare minimum of what the
- 9:40Speaker 1: Chargers would want. But if you're in Minnesota and you
- 9:44Speaker 1: already know that they're probably not going to trade with
- 9:46Speaker 1: the Broncos and the Raiders, it's a game of chicken.
- 9:48Speaker 1: It's like, who am I betting against? Here? Who am
- 9:52Speaker 1: I dealing against? And can I keep that twenty three
- 9:55Speaker 1: and just trade the eleven and something else and move
- 9:58Speaker 1: up six spots.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I haven't heard anyone talking about them keeping twenty three.
- 10:03Speaker 2: That's keeping twenty three.
- 10:05Speaker 1: They keep eleven, they trade eleven, they trade a future
- 10:09Speaker 1: bunch of picks, and they keep twenty three, so that
- 10:11Speaker 1: they have the five and the twenty three. They get
- 10:13Speaker 1: an offensive, they get their quarterback, and then they also
- 10:17Speaker 1: that's all. This is why the five spots so interesting,
- 10:20Speaker 1: which leads to six. I put in my first mock
- 10:23Speaker 1: draft that JJ McCarthy, who's gonna go to the Giants?
- 10:27Speaker 1: They're gonna trade up to get them. I've cooled down
- 10:29Speaker 1: a little bit on that, but I can tell you
- 10:30Speaker 1: they met with him again, Like they've had more meetings
- 10:32Speaker 1: with JJ McCarthy, and he's still very much a part
- 10:35Speaker 1: of it. At the end of the day. And I
- 10:38Speaker 1: made this point to Art Stapleton, who does the Giants
- 10:43Speaker 1: All in podcast. They spent their entire Easter weekend in
- 10:47Speaker 1: ann Arbor, and I say they I am in the brass.
- 10:49Speaker 1: So if they're going to vote all that time, and
- 10:51Speaker 1: they're gonna do it on the night before Easter and
- 10:54Speaker 1: then Easter Sunday and be away from their families, and
- 10:56Speaker 1: they're all out there like, that's not for us, smoke
- 10:59Speaker 1: screen so that we're doing mock drafts and we have
- 11:02Speaker 1: them take it, that's not it's because they're actually interested.
- 11:04Speaker 1: And JJ McCarthy did media today and they asked him
- 11:08Speaker 1: what team he's met the most with and his answer
- 11:10Speaker 1: was a New York Giant. So I think that's interesting.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Giants also interesting. Alt might be on the board, Neighbors
- 11:19Speaker 1: might be on the board. But I've got a little
- 11:22Speaker 1: wildcard to watch for the Giants, and that's Roma Dunsa
- 11:25Speaker 1: out of Washington. I'll say this a dounsay. Everyone who's
- 11:31Speaker 1: met him is like, he's got the best presence of
- 11:33Speaker 1: any of these guys. Walks in he's character. He's all
- 11:39Speaker 1: world human. And if you're the Giants and you've been
- 11:43Speaker 1: through Kadarius Tony as a first round pick, and you've
- 11:47Speaker 1: been through some other questionable ones over the years, and
- 11:50Speaker 1: yet and things ended with Odell the way they did,
- 11:52Speaker 1: and O'Dell's actually a fine human being. Is something about
- 11:55Speaker 1: Odell's character just didn't work. And you hear that o'donsay
- 11:59Speaker 1: is all world and is the most you know, selfless servant,
- 12:03Speaker 1: you know polite? Oh does that not sort of? I
- 12:06Speaker 1: give you a doonsay vibes over neighbors who doesn't have that?
- 12:09Speaker 1: Right up now, I'm not going to trash neighbors because
- 12:11Speaker 1: he might be the best wide receiver in this draft,
- 12:13Speaker 1: and for twenty nine of thirty two teams, he might
- 12:15Speaker 1: be the first guy on the board. Everyone's got neighbors.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Going to the Giants, I would just say, keep an
- 12:21Speaker 1: eye on the offensive tackle Joe Alt, remember Joe Shane
- 12:25Speaker 1: big Notre Dame fan growing up, there's Notre Dame tie there.
- 12:28Speaker 1: But also keep an eye on Roma Dunza for the Giants.
- 12:33Speaker 1: He screams mister giant to me from everything I hear,
- 12:36Speaker 1: and I think that one's interesting. Tennessee. We've heard everything
- 12:46Speaker 1: on Tennessee from Oh, they might they might like all
- 12:51Speaker 1: as their number one guy. They might like lath them
- 12:53Speaker 1: as their number one guy. And then I've heard a
- 12:55Speaker 1: lot of neighbors stuff. Now, look, they did bring in
- 12:56Speaker 1: Calvin Ridley, but if you give a wide receiver room
- 12:59Speaker 1: of DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley, and Martin Malik neighbors, watch
- 13:02Speaker 1: out seven Tennessee. They can't go wrong, or they can
- 13:06Speaker 1: trade back, and that might be the spot where a
- 13:08Speaker 1: team like Minnesota or Denver or Vegas trades up. Remember,
- 13:12Speaker 1: I don't think the Chargers trade with Denver, and I
- 13:15Speaker 1: don't think the Chargers trade with the Raiders. I just
- 13:18Speaker 1: don't see it happening. So if the Giants aren't a
- 13:22Speaker 1: team that's going to trade back there, the next team
- 13:25Speaker 1: up is Tennessee. It's a little easier to trade within
- 13:27Speaker 1: the conference than it would be the division, so that
- 13:30Speaker 1: might be a trade partner to watch. Eight Atlanta. Everything
- 13:33Speaker 1: I hear is pass rusher Dallas Turner out of Alabama
- 13:37Speaker 1: or lat too if his medical checks out. And then
- 13:40Speaker 1: late in the game, I've heard a little Byron Murphy smoke.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I would be surprised if it's not a defensive player.
- 13:46Speaker 1: At eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, that's where I
- 13:51Speaker 1: get all kind of wonky trade stuff going. And I
- 13:54Speaker 1: think we're going to go through this in part two
- 13:57Speaker 1: of this podcast. If you're going to click on part two,
- 13:59Speaker 1: which is my actual mock draft, I'm gonna give you
- 14:01Speaker 1: a bunch of names and where they all are kind
- 14:02Speaker 1: of jarbled up here. This is where you've got a
- 14:05Speaker 1: Doonsay could go, Neighbors could go, Bowers could go, Latham
- 14:10Speaker 1: could go, tell a yac Fu Wanga could go, McCarthy
- 14:14Speaker 1: could go, Penns could go. You've got this glob of
- 14:17Speaker 1: offensive tackle, wide receiver and quarterbacks, and I think any
- 14:23Speaker 1: of the teams could be coming up and down, and
- 14:24Speaker 1: I'd keep an eye on guys, like, is this where
- 14:27Speaker 1: Indianapolis jumps up because other teams you know, loaded up
- 14:31Speaker 1: during freegency and they didn't. Is this where a Jacksonville
- 14:34Speaker 1: trades up because they lost out on Calvin Ridley? Like,
- 14:37Speaker 1: does Jacksonville move up and say we're gonna get brock
- 14:39Speaker 1: Bauers or Molak Neighbors the Broncos so they have to
- 14:42Speaker 1: move up a couple spots. If McCarthy starts slipping and
- 14:45Speaker 1: they want McCarthy, do the Broncos take bow Nicks. If
- 14:48Speaker 1: that's the case that they trade back a little bit, Tennessee,
- 14:51Speaker 1: what are they gonna do? And is the eleven team Minnesota?
- 14:54Speaker 1: Are they gonna be moving up down packaging not packaging.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I think that's where it gets really interesting. So tomorrow
- 14:59Speaker 1: night that'll be about nine picks in. I would say
- 15:03Speaker 1: around the Bears at nine is where it really gets spicy.
- 15:08Speaker 1: And then I just think it's an avalanche of trades
- 15:10Speaker 1: of teams going up and down trying to find what
- 15:12Speaker 1: they can get. Some notes on guys, all right, I
- 15:19Speaker 1: don't have a bo Knicks team at the moment. Broncos
- 15:24Speaker 1: would be that team. I just don't know if they
- 15:27Speaker 1: would take them at twelve. Other than that, I don't
- 15:29Speaker 1: know any other boon Knicks teams. I just think quarterback
- 15:32Speaker 1: need and what is in this draft? So bo Knicks
- 15:36Speaker 1: could be the twelfth overall pick to the Denver Broncos.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Bo Nicks could also be the Will Levis where he
- 15:44Speaker 1: doesn't get selected in the first round and we're just like,
- 15:46Speaker 1: how the hell did boon Knicks not get drafted. I
- 15:48Speaker 1: don't know where to do with bon Nicks. Raiders and
- 15:51Speaker 1: Seahawks are the two Michael Pennix teams. I keep hearing
- 15:55Speaker 1: about Raiders apparently had really good workouts with them. Thirteenth
- 15:59Speaker 1: overall pick seems like the right spot. He's the leader.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Da da Da da da Seattle. At sixteen Seattle their
- 16:07Speaker 1: offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was Pennix's offensive coordinator at the
- 16:11Speaker 1: University of Washington. That was Mike McDonald, the new hire
- 16:14Speaker 1: that was as higher as the OC. If anybody knows Pennox,
- 16:18Speaker 1: it's him. If he falls all the way to sixteen,
- 16:20Speaker 1: that's a cool fit. Like local guy stays in Seattle,
- 16:24Speaker 1: gets to go play for the Seahawks, and you know,
- 16:26Speaker 1: Gino's got one more year. He left to think on
- 16:27Speaker 1: the contract. But they did trade picks or a pick
- 16:32Speaker 1: to get Sam Howell, which makes it seem odd that
- 16:34Speaker 1: they would take a quarterback after trading draft capital to
- 16:37Speaker 1: get Sam Howell. So Pennix, Raiders and Seahawks bon Nicks.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I've got broncos. I'll say this now on this podcast.
- 16:44Speaker 1: It might make news. I don't think Rams are a
- 16:46Speaker 1: Bonnicks team as much as everyone is tying them together.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Unless Sneed played with bo Nix's father, Patrick Nicks, and
- 16:54Speaker 1: they were at Auburn together and that's a cool connection.
- 16:56Speaker 1: And McVeigh obviously has been searching for a Stafford successor,
- 17:00Speaker 1: and whether it be Stetson Bennett last year or Jimmy
- 17:04Speaker 1: Garoppolo this year, or whatever else they've got, I just
- 17:07Speaker 1: don't think they're a first round quarterback team. And I
- 17:09Speaker 1: certainly don't think they're gonna move up to get Bo Nicks.
- 17:13Speaker 1: All right, Aaron, some more things. We haven't even talked about.
- 17:16Speaker 1: The defensive back position. I keep hearing the Eagles want
- 17:19Speaker 1: a defensive back, so I would circle them as a
- 17:21Speaker 1: potential trade up team. And the four dbs to look for,
- 17:25Speaker 1: and I think the order could vary from team to team,
- 17:28Speaker 1: But I think you got the two Alabama kids, Terry
- 17:31Speaker 1: and Arnold and kool Aid mckinstree. How I've been described,
- 17:35Speaker 1: Terry and Arnold was a red shirt sophomore, came in
- 17:38Speaker 1: as like a nickel guy and then evolved into one
- 17:41Speaker 1: of their top corners and is like all world amazing,
- 17:45Speaker 1: like you know, boy scout, the whole thing. Great. Then
- 17:48Speaker 1: you got kool Aid McKinstry, who is dealing with injury stuff,
- 17:52Speaker 1: but he is your flashier guy who maybe barks a
- 17:56Speaker 1: little bit more of that dog, you know, CB one mentality.
- 18:00Speaker 1: If you could have Dion as your kool Aid McKinstry,
- 18:02Speaker 1: then you could say Darryl Green is your Terryan Arnold
- 18:04Speaker 1: as far as demeanor and all that goes. Or maybe
- 18:07Speaker 1: nom the awesome Wall if you will, just like a
- 18:09Speaker 1: gentleman is what I'm describing as ARLs. So I want
- 18:11Speaker 1: to say those two guys and personalities are different, and
- 18:14Speaker 1: the abilities are different. And then you've got the kid
- 18:16Speaker 1: from Toledo, Quinean Mitchell, who will go top twenty. I
- 18:20Speaker 1: think he's a superb athlete. He came out in a
- 18:25Speaker 1: in an interview and said that he wanted to be
- 18:26Speaker 1: the greatest MAC athlete, a MAC football player of all time.
- 18:29Speaker 1: That's Jack Lambert, that's Antonio Gates, that's Ben Roethlisberger, that's
- 18:33Speaker 1: Antonio Brown. But no Quey and Mitchell is saying that's me.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And then the last defensive back would be the wild
- 18:40Speaker 1: card in this thing. I don't know what to do
- 18:42Speaker 1: with Cooper Dejeen Aaron. Have you seen Cooper dejean basketball
- 18:48Speaker 1: footage highlights yet? No?
- 18:49Speaker 2: I haven't watched his basketball play.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Oh Man went to a school of I think a
- 18:54Speaker 1: thousand people in the town total in the school. It's
- 18:59Speaker 1: one of those where they had to combine like eight
- 19:01Speaker 1: different high schools to make a team. And he was
- 19:04Speaker 1: obviously All World Football, All World Beast Ketball. Do you
- 19:07Speaker 1: have the high school on there? Let's let's give it
- 19:09Speaker 1: some love here. Cooper Dejane's high school is called you'll
- 19:14Speaker 1: like this one and then we're gonna go.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:17Speaker 1: So his high school was called OA BCIG, which was
- 19:21Speaker 1: like one of those combinations. Give me his hometown where
- 19:24Speaker 1: he's from, the town of a thousand because I think
- 19:26Speaker 1: we're gonna put it on the map in this podcast.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Cooper Degene, uh suit Falls, No, it's not suit Falls.
- 19:33Speaker 1: He might have been born there. Where did he grow up?
- 19:35Speaker 2: Odiball?
- 19:36Speaker 1: There we go. Tell me about Odaball.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Read me a little wiki on odobl Oh, gosh it,
- 19:44Speaker 2: I don't know if there's anything about Odoblt.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I want the Odobault town of Okay. We're going to Odabolt, Iowa.
- 19:50Speaker 2: The website population as of the twenty twenty census was
- 19:53Speaker 2: nine hundred and ninety four people.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Nine hundred and ninety four people in the entire town,
- 19:59Speaker 1: and Cooper Degene comes from that town in Iowa. It's
- 20:03Speaker 1: just farmland, folks. It's it's incredible.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Sping picture on their town website is literally farmland. And
- 20:11Speaker 2: the second is a tractor parade, a tractor. As someone
- 20:13Speaker 2: who grew up in a very small town that also
- 20:15Speaker 2: had tractor parades, I know how important it is to
- 20:18Speaker 2: have a tractor parade when you're a small town, and
- 20:20Speaker 2: it is a sign of being a small town.
- 20:22Speaker 1: I'm telling you what we're We're on the website right now.
- 20:25Speaker 1: There is there is nothing to love about Odaball, Iowa.
- 20:29Speaker 1: This looks lovely.
- 20:30Speaker 2: This looks very much like Friday night lights would be
- 20:33Speaker 2: said here. I mean, you've got like the water tower
- 20:36Speaker 2: with the town name on it. You got these picturesque
- 20:38Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Once in a hundred years you'll get a star athlete
- 20:42Speaker 1: in one of these towns. Yeah, that's Cooper de Gene.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Notable resident. Yeah, Jason, give me some notable residents who
- 20:49Speaker 1: we got one of one. Iowa Hawk Outs star cornerback
- 20:53Speaker 1: Cooper Degene. That's it. That's it. And and I think
- 20:56Speaker 1: he's a first round pick. I don't. I don't know
- 20:58Speaker 1: where to put him. I think somewhere twenty to thirty two,
- 21:00Speaker 1: But like, those are your four corners. So think of
- 21:02Speaker 1: those guys and Cooper maybe being the second round guy. Like,
- 21:06Speaker 1: if that's the case and you need a defensive back,
- 21:09Speaker 1: teams are going to be trading. So I've got like
- 21:12Speaker 1: a lot of teams wanted to move up to get
- 21:13Speaker 1: those three guys. And I think kool Aid's very interesting
- 21:17Speaker 1: because he didn't blow anybody at the combine or Pro
- 21:21Speaker 1: Day or any of that stuff, and if you watch
- 21:23Speaker 1: the film, he's there all right. Some other interesting names.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I think after the big three, the wide receivers get
- 21:38Speaker 1: really interesting. So I think Rome, Neighbors, and Harrison go
- 21:43Speaker 1: in the top twelve. Let's be generouslet's say top twelve.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Then you've got Brian Thomas at LSU. You got Xavier
- 21:49Speaker 1: Worthy the Burner out of Texas. Who is the combine
- 21:52Speaker 1: workout where You've got ad Mitchell out of Texas. You've
- 21:55Speaker 1: got Lad McConkie, you got Xavier Legette, and you look
- 22:00Speaker 1: at Keon Coleman at a Florida State kind of a
- 22:02Speaker 1: bigger body. I think those are your wide receiver names
- 22:07Speaker 1: that would go in the first round. You might have
- 22:09Speaker 1: another guy, you might have a Ricky Piersoll, you might
- 22:12Speaker 1: have Franklin, Troy Franklin. I think those guys are probably secondard.
- 22:15Speaker 1: But what's interesting is this in that twenty to thirty two,
- 22:20Speaker 1: You've got Steelers who might need a wide receiver. You've
- 22:23Speaker 1: got Lions who might need a wide receiver. You've got
- 22:27Speaker 1: the Cowboys who might need a wide receiver. You've got
- 22:30Speaker 1: an Arizona Cardinals team that's probably taken a wide out
- 22:34Speaker 1: at four, but like, if they can get two wideouts,
- 22:36Speaker 1: they'll be their top one and two wide outs. Buffalo
- 22:39Speaker 1: definitely needs a wide receiver. Baltimore could be in wide
- 22:42Speaker 1: receiver zone because of Odell's departure. Forty nine Ers could
- 22:47Speaker 1: be wide receiver. Rams could be wide receiver. And then
- 22:49Speaker 1: I'll tell you what's really interesting. Thirty three are the
- 22:52Speaker 1: Carolina Panthers. They're likely going to take a receiver. They
- 22:55Speaker 1: have no receiving you help whatever. If you jump thirty
- 22:58Speaker 1: three and you get to thirty two, you get that
- 23:01Speaker 1: wide receiver for five years, not four. So you get
- 23:05Speaker 1: them under contract for five years, which is a really
- 23:08Speaker 1: interesting prospect. And so you look at teams who might
- 23:11Speaker 1: have wide receiver needs and say, okay, take someone else.
- 23:15Speaker 1: You know, say the Patriots, for example, they need a quarterback,
- 23:19Speaker 1: but they're desperate at wide receiver. Do they take a
- 23:21Speaker 1: quarterback at three and then trade back up to thirty two?
- 23:25Speaker 1: Very possible if you're the Jets and you don't want
- 23:28Speaker 1: to Now the Jets wouldn't be the right team for
- 23:31Speaker 1: the Giants and you want to go quarterback and say
- 23:33Speaker 1: we're taking McCarthy or alt but okay, we're going to
- 23:36Speaker 1: jump back in we get five years of Xavier Lagett
- 23:38Speaker 1: or five years of a d Mitchell. That could be
- 23:41Speaker 1: all right too. So I would circle that Kansas City
- 23:44Speaker 1: Chiefs thirty second pick, and I would say that might
- 23:46Speaker 1: be the spot where a team moves up to get
- 23:48Speaker 1: a wide receiver. A couple other little pieces of gossip
- 23:52Speaker 1: that I've been hearing. I think that Philly might be
- 23:56Speaker 1: moving around. I think that Jacksonville might be moving around.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I think Indie might be moving around. And here's one
- 24:03Speaker 1: that just as we're getting onto the mics, I think
- 24:06Speaker 1: Detroit might be looking to move around. Now they made
- 24:09Speaker 1: two big signings or extensions today. I'm on Rossin Brown
- 24:11Speaker 1: and Penny Sue. Well, now I love it. We're in Detroit.
- 24:14Speaker 1: They like hold it till a day before the draft.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Little news, little buzzler momentum. They could have done that
- 24:19Speaker 1: deal in the last several weeks, but they waited till
- 24:21Speaker 1: draft week while we're all here. But I find that
- 24:23Speaker 1: interesting to hear that Detroit's been making calls just to hear,
- 24:26Speaker 1: just to poke around, what do they need. Well, Detroit
- 24:30Speaker 1: could use a defensive end. Detroit could use a defensive back. Obviously,
- 24:34Speaker 1: they've had some issues, you know, with the back end there,
- 24:38Speaker 1: and there's been some departures this season, and one of
- 24:40Speaker 1: those players is having some legal stuff. So maybe it's
- 24:43Speaker 1: for one of the top corners. Interesting to watch running backs,
- 24:49Speaker 1: I don't see a single running back in the first round.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I guess Bijeon went first round last year and Gibbs
- 24:55Speaker 1: went first round. I don't even know if there's a
- 24:58Speaker 1: running back in the first fifty picks. To be honest,
- 25:01Speaker 1: I would say Marshawn Lloyd or Jonathan brook So the
- 25:05Speaker 1: top two running backs. But like that, it's not even
- 25:06Speaker 1: a position I'm considering right now. Safety not a position
- 25:10Speaker 1: I'm considering right now. Linebacker. There's some love for Colson
- 25:15Speaker 1: out of Michigan. Not a first rounder. I don't think
- 25:20Speaker 1: my whole deal is like I want to get as
- 25:22Speaker 1: many first round picks, right, So that's not direct HiT's necessarily,
- 25:26Speaker 1: but I'd like to give you the idea of like,
- 25:27Speaker 1: all right, if I get twenty two or twenty five
- 25:30Speaker 1: or twenty eight of the thirty two first round picks,
- 25:32Speaker 1: that's pretty good. I don't see any running backs. I
- 25:34Speaker 1: don't see any pure safeties. I don't see any linebackers
- 25:38Speaker 1: middle linebackers. I would have been wrong because I didn't
- 25:40Speaker 1: have Jack Campbell last year. And then I'm not sure
- 25:46Speaker 1: other than Brock Bowers if we're going to even smell
- 25:49Speaker 1: a tight end up top. Rock Bowers is interesting, another
- 25:53Speaker 1: name I've heard tied to a million teams, and yet
- 25:56Speaker 1: when you're doing a mock draft, if you don't have
- 25:58Speaker 1: him to the Jets, like it's hard to place him.
- 26:01Speaker 1: The two players that I've been told to have been
- 26:03Speaker 1: the cleanest prospects by cleanest meaning character, health, everything A
- 26:09Speaker 1: Doonesday and Brock Bowers. Both those guys are really interesting.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Team that I would watch to see what they do
- 26:20Speaker 1: if there's a quarterback slipping is the Denver Broncos. Do
- 26:27Speaker 1: they trade back into the first round? If they pass
- 26:29Speaker 1: on a McCarthy or a Knicks and one of them
- 26:33Speaker 1: is still sitting there with there be Pennix or Nicks.
- 26:36Speaker 1: They don't have a ton of ammunition. But I think
- 26:38Speaker 1: Sean Payton, looking at his quarterback room, could go to
- 26:41Speaker 1: war with Zach Wilson and convince himself that Zach Wilson
- 26:43Speaker 1: and Jared Stidham and then Denucie co compete. But I
- 26:47Speaker 1: think you feel a lot better if you ended up
- 26:48Speaker 1: getting Bo Nicks or a Spencer Rattler in the second round,
- 26:51Speaker 1: even a name that's been buzzing a bit, Byron Murphy
- 26:56Speaker 1: out of Texas. I originally had him going eighteen to
- 26:59Speaker 1: Cincinnati in my first mock dround. I think he was
- 27:00Speaker 1: higher than that. That was some of the feedback I got,
- 27:05Speaker 1: And then I would just go through the tackles and
- 27:07Speaker 1: one of those guys is going to be the first
- 27:09Speaker 1: one taken. It's either going to be Alt Fuaga or
- 27:13Speaker 1: this JC Latham, who, as we're recording this, I'm telling
- 27:16Speaker 1: you has got more heat than maybe any other player
- 27:18Speaker 1: in this draft. I just keep on hearing his name
- 27:19Speaker 1: come up. Oulu Fashanu at a Penn State has a
- 27:24Speaker 1: lot of fans. I think he's a guy who could
- 27:26Speaker 1: play left tackle, which is helpful. Would consider him a
- 27:29Speaker 1: top twenty pick for sure. Troy Fatanu out of Washington.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Not sure his health is everything that everyone wants. I've
- 27:38Speaker 1: heard some questions on that. I'm trying to spell his
- 27:43Speaker 1: name right here. Faugh new the auto correct on my
- 27:49Speaker 1: word document keeps on changing these guys' names. I'm like, no,
- 27:52Speaker 1: those are the real names. Relax. Amarus Mims is a
- 27:56Speaker 1: name to watch. Giant, massive offensive tackle out of Georgia.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Doesn't necessarily have the tape or what you want, like,
- 28:06Speaker 1: that's the upside guy. And then the last one I
- 28:09Speaker 1: would The two last ones I would circle is we
- 28:14Speaker 1: got an NFL head coach Colin right now, but we
- 28:16Speaker 1: can't pick that up on the podcast. We'll call him
- 28:18Speaker 1: back in a second. The other two would be Geiton
- 28:22Speaker 1: and Jordan Morgan who plays at Arizona. Those are your
- 28:28Speaker 1: first round prospects. You know you can go through the list.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Graham Barton, the inside guy at a duke. Darius Robinson
- 28:35Speaker 1: out of Missouri chop. Robinson's a name, the guy who's falling,
- 28:40Speaker 1: and I hate it for him because I think he's
- 28:41Speaker 1: a great kid, and I've seen him do the media tour.
- 28:43Speaker 1: I think Lotso is gonna fall. I had him going
- 28:46Speaker 1: top twelve in my first mock draft. I think he
- 28:48Speaker 1: ends up going in the twenties. The medicals just are
- 28:50Speaker 1: not as clean as everyone feeling comfortable. Seems like it
- 28:53Speaker 1: all you need is one team, like he can go
- 28:55Speaker 1: eighth to Atlanta and I wimb shock. But you know
- 28:57Speaker 1: what happened. He was medically retired with a neck injury
- 29:00Speaker 1: all season or draft season along. I've been told by everyone,
- 29:04Speaker 1: it's fine, it's fine, it's fine. Well, the day for
- 29:06Speaker 1: the draft, I don't know if you're taking a guy
- 29:08Speaker 1: who was madic. I mean, just sucks to hear that.
- 29:10Speaker 1: But I don't think he's fallen out of the first round.
- 29:11Speaker 1: But I don't think he's going top eight or top twelve.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Before we get to my mock drafts on part two?
- 29:19Speaker 1: Is there anything? Oh, there's a guy Newton out of Illinois.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I didn't have him defensive tackle. I didn't have him
- 29:26Speaker 1: in my first round. And I heard it from every fan,
- 29:28Speaker 1: but did not hear it from NFL teams. So that
- 29:30Speaker 1: tells me that, like I might be less far off
- 29:33Speaker 1: on that maybe Newton goes, maybe he doesn't. But to
- 29:36Speaker 1: not have Newton from Illinois in the first round, it's
- 29:38Speaker 1: not like I missed on like a top ten pick
- 29:40Speaker 1: or anything. Pennix, like I said, two teams Nicks, I
- 29:45Speaker 1: only could think of the Broncos, and I think of
- 29:49Speaker 1: the Vikings miss quarterback in the top ten and McCarthy
- 29:52Speaker 1: gets taken like I think they could take at eleven
- 29:55Speaker 1: Penix and be okay. I would say this as we
- 29:57Speaker 1: wrap this little notes emptying session. From what I hear
- 30:03Speaker 1: and from what it sounds like, Minnesota is closer. How
- 30:08Speaker 1: do I put this, Minnesota might look at JJ McCarthy
- 30:13Speaker 1: closer to Pennix than they do Drake May, meaning the
- 30:18Speaker 1: Drake May might be their first you know, their their
- 30:21Speaker 1: love affair, and it's not like McCarthy's right after him.
- 30:23Speaker 1: I think there's a drop off, and then it's McCarthy
- 30:26Speaker 1: and there's less of a drop off, and then Pennix.
- 30:28Speaker 1: That's how I would order it for them. So that's
- 30:30Speaker 1: where I'm at at three or three thirty. I hope
- 30:33Speaker 1: that was exciting for everyone listening. As you're on the treadmill,
- 30:35Speaker 1: I would encourage you then to now click on part two,
- 30:39Speaker 1: which is going to be coming out as well, which
- 30:41Speaker 1: is where I'm coming out in my mock draft as
- 30:43Speaker 1: of four o'clock Eastern on Wednesday. And of course whatever's
- 30:49Speaker 1: printed on NFL dot Com on Thursday morning and I
- 30:52Speaker 1: present on Good Morning Football might be different because it
- 30:55Speaker 1: might have changed based on until I've gotten over the
- 30:57Speaker 1: last few hours. But this is my my empty of
- 31:01Speaker 1: the notebook. Like I said, I think it could be
- 31:03Speaker 1: six quarterbacks taken. I wouldn't be shocked if it was
- 31:05Speaker 1: just five. I think there's going to be ten or
- 31:09Speaker 1: so trades made in this draft, and I think there
- 31:12Speaker 1: are going to be some wild, wild moves going on
- 31:17Speaker 1: from about nine to fourteen. That includes the Jets, that
- 31:21Speaker 1: includes the Broncos, that includes the Vikings, that includes the Bears.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Like I don't think it's just going to be chalk,
- 31:28Speaker 1: So take with that what you will. Everybody, finish up
- 31:31Speaker 1: your session on the treadmill or your drive or wherever.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Else, or your match of call of duty.
- 31:38Speaker 1: You'aying I'm a Minecraft guy?
- 31:40Speaker 2: Oh?
- 31:40Speaker 1: Never never played Minecraft? Yeah?
- 31:42Speaker 2: I have not either.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Are you into the shoot them up game?
- 31:44Speaker 2: No? I am notoriously horrible at any first person kind
- 31:48Speaker 2: of thing.
- 31:48Speaker 1: What about Twitch?
- 31:49Speaker 2: You ever watched anyone play video over pandemic? I watched
- 31:53Speaker 2: some people play among Us and great people play. I
- 31:58Speaker 2: actually watched people play mad in one teacher one time
- 32:01Speaker 2: one time.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not like, So let me ask you about
- 32:04Speaker 1: among Us? Is that did they take among Us and
- 32:07Speaker 1: then make the HBO show based on among Us? Yes?
- 32:11Speaker 2: You thinking about Last of Us?
- 32:13Speaker 1: Yes?
- 32:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's among Us is like a cute kids
- 32:16Speaker 2: game where like you're on a spaceship and right different game.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Last of Us is like the gritty zombie post apocalyptic thing.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Got it one last thing before we wrap it up?
- 32:26Speaker 1: How dumb? Sorry? How do I put this?
- 32:31Speaker 2: Good start? Interested to see where this goes?
- 32:37Speaker 1: As an NBA fan, You're gonna put Nick Sixers and
- 32:42Speaker 1: Nuggets Lakers on Thursday night up against the NFL Draft, Like,
- 32:46Speaker 1: can you wait at night? Can you take Can the
- 32:48Speaker 1: NBA have some foresight on this and say, you know what,
- 32:51Speaker 1: the NFL Draft is a big deal. ESPN is a partner,
- 32:55Speaker 1: the NFL network is gonna be airing, Like, I'm devastated.
- 32:59Speaker 1: I can't watch my Knicks play the Sixers Game three
- 33:03Speaker 1: and I just see the schedule it's a loaded NBA night,
- 33:05Speaker 1: and it's like, guys, I'm not asking you to put
- 33:08Speaker 1: up a white flag here, but maybe just play that
- 33:10Speaker 1: game Friday night of Night two as opposed to going
- 33:13Speaker 1: up against the Jets and the Giants with top ten picks.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Especially when you have huge storylines around each one. The
- 33:20Speaker 2: Knicks game, like, I mean, the Knicks beating Embiid would
- 33:24Speaker 2: be amazing.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Whatever, that's amazing series that you can't That's how do
- 33:28Speaker 1: you ask a Knicks fan Because a Knicks fan is
- 33:30Speaker 1: obviously gonna watch the Knicks and watch it, but they're
- 33:32Speaker 1: also a Jets and Gizon. Then you've got Denver and
- 33:35Speaker 1: the Lakers.
- 33:36Speaker 2: And especially after Lebron's tantrum last ye, Yeah, that's a
- 33:41Speaker 2: wild night to.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Be Uh, maybe we wait on the schedule. Maybe we
