- 2:15Speaker 3: start today's episode. There are hotels where you sleep, and
- 2:28Speaker 3: then there are hotels where you wonder is something else
- 2:35Speaker 3: sleeping with you? Tonight we're traveling deep into southwestern Colorado,
- 2:44Speaker 3: into the historic town of Duringle, Colorado, a town built
- 2:53Speaker 3: around the railroad, a town that remembers the footsteps miners, gamblers, businessmen, travelers, outlaws,
- 3:08Speaker 3: and people who never quite seemed to lead. Standing in
- 3:15Speaker 3: the heart of downtown Durango is a building that has
- 3:20Speaker 3: watched more than a century past through its doors, The
- 3:27Speaker 3: Strata Hotel. Built in eighteen eighty seven, the Strata become
- 3:37Speaker 3: one of Durgo's most recognizable landmarks. Its Victorian architecture is
- 3:46Speaker 3: very beautiful, it would. It's woodwork is elaborate, its rooms
- 3:56Speaker 3: carry the atmosphere of another century. But according to stories
- 4:04Speaker 3: passed down through the years, some of the hotel's former
- 4:09Speaker 3: occupants may still be checked in. Tonight, we're going inside,
- 4:20Speaker 3: and after the doors closed, we may not be alone.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Imagine duringo in the late nineteenth century, the railroad has arrived,
- 4:40Speaker 3: steam engines, filled the air with smoke, horses pole wagons.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Through the dusty streets. Miners, merchants, travelers, gamblers and adventurers
- 5:00Speaker 3: ar riot looking for opportunity, and in the middle of
- 5:04Speaker 3: it all stands a brand new hotel. The Strata when
- 5:13Speaker 3: it was when it has opened its doors in eighteen
- 5:17Speaker 3: eighty seven, it represented luxury and sophistication for a growing
- 5:27Speaker 3: frontier community. Guests walk through beneath its irate ceilings. They
- 5:37Speaker 3: climbed wooden staircases. They entered rooms illuminated by the technology
- 5:46Speaker 3: of the age. But hotels are strange places. They are
- 5:53Speaker 3: temporary homes. People arrived carrying their secrets, celebrate, they argue,
- 6:03Speaker 3: they fall in love, they become sick, they die, and
- 6:10Speaker 3: then they leave, Or at least that's what they're supposed
- 6:17Speaker 3: to believe, because according to local legend, the Stratter Hotel
- 6:26Speaker 3: has accumulated something over the decades that doesn't appear on
- 6:35Speaker 3: any reservation list, stories, whispers, footsteps, and of course ghosts.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Picture yourself standing in one of the hotels, always right
- 6:56Speaker 3: after midnight, the lights low, The building is quiet. There
- 7:04Speaker 3: are no voices coming from the lobby, no luggage rolling
- 7:11Speaker 3: across the floor, no doors opening, nothing, just silence. Then
- 7:22Speaker 3: don't it. Son comes somewhere in the hallway. You wait nothing,
- 7:32Speaker 3: You take another step, don't closer, You stop, and then
- 7:41Speaker 3: you hear it. Footsteps, slow, measured approaching, They grow louder,
- 7:54Speaker 3: one footstep, two, then four. You look towards the end
- 8:05Speaker 3: of the hallway. Nobody's there. Let the foot of footsteps continue,
- 8:14Speaker 3: and suddenly they stop right outside your door. You stare
- 8:22Speaker 3: at the doorknob. It doesn't move. You wait ten seconds,
- 8:30Speaker 3: go by twenty thirty. Then you freeze, another and another.
- 8:50Speaker 3: You reach for the handle, You open the door. The
- 8:57Speaker 3: hallway is empty, comes to empty, but on the wooden
- 9:04Speaker 3: floor you hear one final sound, a final step behind you.
- 9:14Speaker 3: The Statter Hotel has developed a reputation for strange occurrences
- 9:22Speaker 3: over the years. Guests and visitors have reported hearing unexplained footsteps.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Doors have reportedly opened or closed on their own. Some
- 9:39Speaker 3: people claim to have her voices, then nobody else was nearby.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Others describe the unsettling sensation that someone was watching them.
- 9:56Speaker 3: And then there are the store of apparitions, figures appearing briefly,
- 10:08Speaker 3: only to disappear at moments later. Now are these stories
- 10:15Speaker 3: proof of ghosts. No, there are no scientific evidence establishing
- 10:22Speaker 3: that the spirits inhabited the hotel. Old buildings make strange noises,
- 10:32Speaker 3: what expands and contracts, Pipes rattle when moves through the walls,
- 10:43Speaker 3: People can misinterpreted shadows, and the human brain is especially
- 10:52Speaker 3: good at turning unexplained sounds to something meaningful. But that
- 11:01Speaker 3: doesn't stop the stories. And some of these stories are
- 11:07Speaker 3: remarkably present. Are there remarkably persistent? Imagine checking into a
- 11:23Speaker 3: room at the stratter. You unpack your bags, You admire
- 11:30Speaker 3: the historic surroundings, you take photographs. Everything seems perfectly normal
- 11:39Speaker 3: until bedtime. You turn off the lights, you lie down,
- 11:46Speaker 3: and then you notice it. The room feels different. Not cold,
- 11:55Speaker 3: not necessarily frightening, just occupy. You hear something move, a
- 12:05Speaker 3: gentle rustle, You sit up. Nothing, You lay back down,
- 12:16Speaker 3: thinking nothing of it. Then the floorboards, look towards the door.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Nothing another then this time from another side of the room.
- 12:39Speaker 3: You turn on the lamp. Silence, turn it off. Then
- 12:46Speaker 3: you hear something that makes your heart stop. A voice,
- 12:51Speaker 3: not loud, not clear, almost someone is whispering from the hallway.
- 13:00Speaker 3: You sit up, you listen nothing. You convince yourself it
- 13:07Speaker 3: was just a plumbing Then a whisper comes again, this
- 13:13Speaker 3: time closer. You reach for the light, and the lamp
- 13:20Speaker 3: turns on by itself. Among the types of the stories
- 13:27Speaker 3: commonly associated with the old hotels are sightings, are mysterious
- 13:33Speaker 3: women dressed in clothing from another era. The stratter is
- 13:40Speaker 3: no exception to that atmosphere. Imagine welcome through the hotel
- 13:48Speaker 3: late at night. At the far end of the hallway,
- 13:53Speaker 3: you notice a woman. She's standing completely still. Her clothing
- 14:00Speaker 3: appears old fashioned. She looks as though she belongs another century.
- 14:07Speaker 3: You assume she's just another guest. You call out, no response.
- 14:14Speaker 3: You walk closer, she doesn't move. You take another step,
- 14:20Speaker 3: and then she turns. Her face is pale, her eyes
- 14:28Speaker 3: seemed fixed directly on you. You blink. She's gone. No footsteps,
- 14:36Speaker 3: no door closing, nothing, just an empty hallway, And perhaps
- 14:44Speaker 3: the strangest part, you later discover that nobody matching her
- 14:50Speaker 3: description has ever stayed on your floor. One of the
- 14:57Speaker 3: most fascinating things about the haunted historic hotels is that
- 15:03Speaker 3: the supernatural stories often seen connected to the building's past.
- 15:11Speaker 3: You don't just hear random noises accorn a legend. You
- 15:16Speaker 3: hear things that seem to belong in another time. Music, laughter, voices, footsteps,
- 15:29Speaker 3: a distant train, a door opening, a glass breaking for
- 15:36Speaker 3: a moment. As just as though hotel is in simply
- 15:42Speaker 3: a building, it's a recording, a place where the past
- 15:49Speaker 3: has somehow left in an impression, and occasionally someone claims
- 15:56Speaker 3: to hear that the impression. Imagine standing alone inside the hotel.
- 16:06Speaker 3: The clock reads to seventeen in the morning, then faintly
- 16:13Speaker 3: hear piano music. You walk towards it. The music gets louder,
- 16:28Speaker 3: turn the corn and the music stops. You look into
- 16:37Speaker 3: the empty room. There's nothing there, but the piano is
- 16:44Speaker 3: still moving, one key then another in silence. Every haunted
- 16:56Speaker 3: hotel seemed to have a story about some one who
- 17:02Speaker 3: never truly left. The stratter is no different. The legends
- 17:10Speaker 3: grow from a simple and unsetting idea, what if there
- 17:16Speaker 3: is Some of the hotel's former guests are still wondering
- 17:22Speaker 3: that's halls to day. Think about it. The number of
- 17:28Speaker 3: people who have passed through those doors since eighteen eighty seven,
- 17:36Speaker 3: thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people who compte d
- 17:42Speaker 3: wrangle for business, people traveling west, people working in the mines,
- 17:51Speaker 3: people celebrating, people returning from something, people searching for something.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Some arrived with families, others just arrived down on their
- 18:04Speaker 3: own alone, and some never make it home. Over more
- 18:13Speaker 3: than a century, countless lives interested with its building, and
- 18:21Speaker 3: it's it is here where the legends begin. Now, imagine
- 18:32Speaker 3: you're standing in beside an old elevator. It's late, very late.
- 18:41Speaker 3: The lobby is nearly empty. You press the button, doors open,
- 18:52Speaker 3: You step in the side, you press your floor. The
- 18:55Speaker 3: doors closed. Eld water begins to rise first floor, second floor,
- 19:06Speaker 3: third floor, and it stops. The door's open, no ways
- 19:17Speaker 3: standing outside. You wait. The doors begin to close, Then
- 19:25Speaker 3: a hand appears between them. The doors reopen again, but
- 19:34Speaker 3: there's no person. Nothing. You stare into the hallway empty.
- 19:42Speaker 3: The doors close again. The elevator begins moving. Then you
- 19:49Speaker 3: feel something or someone standing behind you. You can since them.
- 20:02Speaker 3: You don't want to turn around, but eventually you do
- 20:09Speaker 3: nothing the elevator reaches your floor, ding, the door opens,
- 20:18Speaker 3: you step out, and just before the doors close, you
- 20:23Speaker 3: hear a voice behind you. Why maybe the ghosts aren't real.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Maybe they are, But there's another explanation for wide places
- 20:41Speaker 3: that the strattler feel so different. History has weight. Walk
- 20:48Speaker 3: through a modern hotel, you may see the polished floors, televisions, phones,
- 20:58Speaker 3: and brand lights. Walk through a historic hotel and you're
- 21:03Speaker 3: surrounded by evidence that people live differently. The wood has
- 21:10Speaker 3: been touched by thousands of hands. The stairs have been
- 21:15Speaker 3: carried generations of footsteps. The doors have opened and closed
- 21:23Speaker 3: countless and countless times. Every room has a story, and
- 21:31Speaker 3: when the building becomes quiet, your imagination begins filling in
- 21:39Speaker 3: the blanks. Its creaky foreboard becomes a footstep, a shadow
- 21:46Speaker 3: figure becomes real, a distant voice becomes a whisper. But sometimes,
- 21:57Speaker 3: even on the explanation doesn't completely remove the feeling, because
- 22:05Speaker 3: there are stories that people remember, stories that get repeated,
- 22:14Speaker 3: stories that become part of the identity of a place,
- 22:20Speaker 3: and eventually the hotel itself becomes a legend. Now imagine
- 22:27Speaker 3: yourself standing at the strata your final night. You've heard
- 22:34Speaker 3: all the stories, the footsteps, the voices, the mysterious figures.
- 22:44Speaker 3: You laugh about it. You don't believe in ghosts, at
- 22:48Speaker 3: least you don't think you do. You go to bed
- 22:55Speaker 3: and it passes one o'clock, two o'clock, three o'clock, and
- 23:04Speaker 3: then footsteps. You open your eyes, Then another, then another
- 23:19Speaker 3: footsteps you're coming from they're coming from the hallway. You
- 23:26Speaker 3: sit up. The footsteps stop, You wait nothing. You lay
- 23:35Speaker 3: back down, thinking nothing of it. Then you hear your
- 23:41Speaker 3: door handle move slowly, very slowly, your handle turns. You stare,
- 24:00Speaker 3: the door doesn't open. The handle returns to its normal position.
- 24:07Speaker 3: You breathe again, and then you hear the footsteps again,
- 24:15Speaker 3: but this time the inside the room. One footstep, two footsteps,
- 24:25Speaker 3: three footsteps. They're moving towards the bed. You pull the
- 24:31Speaker 3: blankets over yourself. The footsteps stop, silence, Then you fill
- 24:41Speaker 3: the mattress sink. Right beside you, something has just sat down.
- 24:51Speaker 3: The Strayler Hotel has stood in duringo for more than once.
- 24:58Speaker 3: More than a century. Generations have walked through its doors.
- 25:04Speaker 3: The world outside has changed, technology has changed, transportation has changed,
- 25:14Speaker 3: even people have changed, but the hotel remains still standing,
- 25:25Speaker 3: still watching, still carrying, the echoes from the past. Are
- 25:32Speaker 3: the stories true? Are they really spirits wandering the hallways?
- 25:40Speaker 3: Are the unexplained footsteps evidence of the dead, or are
- 25:47Speaker 3: these simply the sounds of an ancient building setting beneath
- 25:54Speaker 3: its weight of its own history. Perhaps we never will know,
- 26:01Speaker 3: But there's something strangely beautiful about the possibility, because if
- 26:08Speaker 3: ghosts exist, then maybe a place like the Strata it
- 26:17Speaker 3: isn't haunted because the people died there. Maybe it's haunted
- 26:23Speaker 3: because people live there. They laughed there, they loved there,
- 26:30Speaker 3: They argued in there, they dreamed in there, and they
- 26:36Speaker 3: waited in there, and maybe some part of those lives
- 26:44Speaker 3: never completely have disappeared. So the next time you're in Durango,
- 26:54Speaker 3: Colorado and you see the lights on a Strata Hope
- 27:00Speaker 3: Tell glowing against the darkness, remember this. The doors may close,
- 27:09Speaker 3: the guests may go to sleep, the streets may become silent,
- 27:17Speaker 3: but according to legends, the Stratter Hotel never truly sleeps.
- 27:26Speaker 3: And if you're walking through one of these old hallways
- 27:29Speaker 3: after midnight and you hear footsteps behind you, don't turn
- 27:35Speaker 3: around too quickly, because you might discover that you are
- 27:41Speaker 3: not the only one walking down the hall. This has
- 27:47Speaker 3: been your story of the Stratler Hotel. Until next time,
- 27:57Speaker 3: keep your lights on, walk your and whatever you do,
- 28:04Speaker 3: don't answer the knock. Mhmm.
