[upbeat rock music] Right on, right on, everybody. Hey, Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast, show number
• 0:18
  24. This is the, the first weekly episode though, so. De-doom, de-doom, de-doom. We got, uh- Oh, cool... we have a full shop full of people today. It's, uh, JK. Hello, hello. We got Dave Schlabowski. Yes, I'm here.
• 0:34
Dave's here. And also, Mr. Tony Bricker. Hola. And a potential slew of calling guests, but that's not really for us to say. Wait for it. Wait for it. Ah, wait for it. Right on.
• 0:51
So heckina, it's, well, it's been a couple weeks and a lot of stuff going on. Summer's dwindling down. Who, who wants to, who wants to lead off with what they've been doing on their motorbikeles?
• 1:03
I, I will start with being silly enough to go on this thing called the Tour de Towner on this past Sunday. That was pretty good. [laughs] That was a, um, that was an entertaining ride. I'm just gonna leave it at that.
• 1:16
There was a light siding. There was a light siding. [laughs] Well, I like that we have dragged a couple out of a comfort zone. 'Cause normally it was A to B, almost like a race to get to the falls.
• 1:30
Stop, take a picture, and- Clutch Spark plugs... and race back. It's like, "No, why don't you just go a little longer?" Get a- Go over to Thirsty Fox- Fox... sit down, have a drink, relax, talk, then, oh, then go back.
• 1:44
Yeah. It's been suggested that JK takes over- Yeah... the Towner ride since- Well, mentally I have. [laughs] I, I will say, you know, for those people- If, if anyone does join me on these...
• 1:56
[laughs] For, for those people that don't know about the Thursday Fox, if you're looking for a really nice, casual, short ride, the Thursday Fox is fantastic.
• 2:06
You just get on the oakleaf, you get to Brown Deer, you look to your left, there's a bar. Yep. It's got cheap beers. Yeah. Sit down, enjoy a beer or two, ride home. Yeah. It's about like seven- It's a great getaway.
• 2:19
It's absolutely. U- u- using, using the Riverwest imprint, boom, it's about seven miles. Seven miles. And mellow. 14-minute round trip, yeah.
• 2:26
And you have to, like, cross, like, the railroad and a couple- Did you say 14-minute round trip? 14 miles round trip. [laughs] Yeah, I'm gonna... I'll be there in 14 minutes, bye. [laughs] That's moving. Yeah, no.
• 2:37
Right on. No, that was cool. No, yeah? Or yeah, no? So this- Okay... this ride happens in Milwaukee every Sunday before either Memorial Day or Labor Day. Exactly. 18th, so this is the ninth year. I was doing math. Yeah.
• 2:51
Wow. [laughs] Doing math on a morning. Hey, I'm just... Hey, thank you. I actually am impressed. So we, um, are drinking beer also here at the show. On the newly bought out Founders Brewery.
• 3:06
Tony wanted to talk about how San Miguel bought out, uh- Founders... Founders. And Founders was what? The fifth largest- Four- 14th... 14th largest brewery in the United States.
• 3:16
Biggest in Michigan, and I had no idea they were the 14th- No... in the country. And now they're owned by the Spaniards. Something tells me- So it's an import?... their beer will still be delicious.
• 3:25
Hey- So Michigan beer- Just, just-... is an import? I remember this. This was- Just so you guys, just- This was in, like, the South African thing, uh, the- It, Miller... uh, Miller.
• 3:33
I was like, "Oh, so Miller is an import now." Right. Just so you guys don't feel bad- [laughs]... both, both of the Founders kept 5%. Nice. Just because they can. Oh, I thought they were gonna hurt. Yeah, no. Yeah.
• 3:45
What did you bring, Dave? You brought a- I brought a Blueberry Train from Tribute Brewing up in Eagle River.
• 3:51
I was just up riding and, uh, working on my waterfall route, uh, trying to do recon and, uh, which has been like a, a, a very long project. [laughs] It's now 400 miles.
• 4:03
And, uh, and on the 24th, Tom Schuler of 7-Eleven fame, uh, Tom and I are gonna go ride, ride the entire route.
• 4:12
So I've reconned all the little sections and, and, uh, the last time I was up there, uh, I was up there and I, I, on the way back through, uh, south, I stopped at Tribute Brewing in Eagle River and, uh, and got some of their, uh, delicious Blueberry Train wheat ale.
• 4:28
This is good. This is tasty. Yeah. It's, it's very good. Was, uh, was Tom Directeur des Sportifs? He raced. He was one, actually one of the founders of the, of the, um, 7-Eleven team. So- Oh, did he...
• 4:40
So was- Him and, him and Jim Ochowicz, it was- Right... sort of their idea, and then they went out and rounded up the riders. And Tom raced as well, so Tom's- Okay. So he was- Tom's-...
• 4:49
with Andy Hampsten and all those guys. Yeah. And, and To- and, and Bob Roll and, and all, yeah. And Michael Fatca was actually the team leader, I believe, the director.
• 4:58
Alex Ziga and, um, and, uh, Tom is actually, like, Tom's a great person to go on long rides with because he's got lots of stories.
• 5:06
And, um, one of my favorites is when he was in, uh, I think the Giro, he was racing in Giro, and, um, Bernard Hinault was taking a natural break, um, so peeing off his bike.
• 5:19
[laughs] And Tom thought he was doing him a favor by riding up behind him and was gonna help push him along while the, while Bernard, you know, took his natural break.
• 5:30
And Bernard turned around and looked at him very politely, I guess, and said, "Yeah, we don't do that in the pro peloton." [laughs] [laughs] We don't touch people's bums here. No, no bum touching.
• 5:43
But so I, I'm going with Tom and potentially, um, uh, a buddy of mine from, uh, Madison who, uh, who runs the, um, Trips for Kids, um, and, uh, um, Wheels for Winners, stuff that gives out bikes in, in Madison.
• 5:59
So is Tom still doing the, the, the, the cycling races around Wisconsin? He's one of the, the partners in the Tour of America's Dairyland- Right on... as well as the Intelligentsia Cup.
• 6:08
He also runs, uh, a race in Detroit. He's originally from Michigan, um, so he runs a- We're not gonna hold that against him... he runs a race in Detroit. What with this Founders sale and all. Um, I should- Yeah.
• 6:20
No, you- so Michael Fatka was, I believe, one of-- he was the coach or the team leader or whatever I don't know that name... and he owned a place in, uh, Ames, Iowa called, uh, Michael's Cyclery, believe it or not.
• 6:33
And it was all-- I think Andy Hampsten put money into it, because this thing was in the middle of Ames, which, I don't know, it's a college town, but it's not a humongous college town. Right.
• 6:44
And this was the most beautiful bike shop I've ever seen. Huh.
• 6:47
Uh, I was traveling on the road, being a rep selling, you know, bike parts to bike shops, and I'm always like, "I gotta go through there," 'cause they have so much cool stuff in there. Nice.
• 6:56
And, uh- I'll ask, I'll ask him about it. He's actually- Yeah... he's actually over at Cafe Centro right now. Get outta here. I ran into- Why isn't he on our show?
• 7:03
[laughs] I r- I ran into him at, I ran into him at Company Brewing when I was there having dinner, and then, um, and then I-- he was like, "Hey, Billy Peterson of, um, you know, rock and roll fame, playing in,
• 7:17
uh, Steve Miller Band, uh, a, a bunch of other-" Bass player? Bass player, yeah. Bass player, yeah. Uh, yeah. Um, he's playing at Cafe Centro tonight. Oh. Um, so Tom was going there to see him.
• 7:27
In our little neck of the woods here- Right. Tom was going there to see him... in River West Milwaukee, Wisconsin. And I ran i- so I went into Centro for a drink and saw Billy Peterson play a little bit.
• 7:35
By the way, I gave you a fatbike.com button there. I see that. I'm gonna wear that. It was a day of presents here. It was. It was, uh- I got the best present of all. Okay.
• 7:44
D- he got the actual last pair, potentially ever, of amazing healing power of beer socks. Really? Are they not doing those anymore? Doesn't... Was it Jason? Well, they've been Jason? Shmason. No. Jason.
• 7:56
[laughs] Stickers? Are there still stickers on those, or- Well, these are the originals. These were given- Okay... to me for Steel Is Real. Yeah. So- Right... these are actually ones Ph- So Phil- Vintage...
• 8:04
Phil had done them in the past or- Phil, Phil- Vintage Phils... Phil knitted them. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] And, but yes. Observed, yes. Dolga and Phil have knitted these socks for you. They're very nice. Yes.
• 8:14
They're Merino wool. It's for your- Knitting pleasure. And that, that r- And if only Ralph was here, you know where Ralph would wear it? Just like the Chili Peppers. I was just gonna say that. [laughs] Yeah.
• 8:24
We don't- Socks on tops... we don't need that mental image. [laughs] Mm-hmm. Um- Little fries. But that, your ride, that is now your ride. I guess.
• 8:32
Every Day Cycles ride, um- Everybody's yelling at me already for not divulging the route. I'm like, "We don't divulge the route." Oh. Mm-mm. So can we get a heads up- Suck it... on where the route's going? Like, no.
• 8:40
Nope. How about no? Nope. Not for that, not for Biketoberfest. Nope. Not for any of those rides. No, so. Oh, yeah. Yeah. You'll find out when you get there. Yeah. Well, so- But, but that's next weekend... true.
• 8:50
It will be tomorrow. Yes, if you're listening to this today on Friday. Oh, right, when, when this podcast drops. Tomorrow in podcast terms. [laughs] Yes, yes. By the way, speaking of- The weather's-...
• 8:59
your tomorrow terms, we are gonna do this every week whether you like it or not, just so everybody knows. Yeah. So just as a gentle hint, it's, you know, massaging the underbelly of Milwaukee.
• 9:10
So from the launch point, which is, can be divulged- Yes. Cafe Hollander... is Cafe Hollander. Cafe Hollander Always has been, always will be. On Downer Avenue. Where we will ju- It will-...
• 9:20
where we will judge you or, or your bike. Exactly. Or both. So it's about the Milwaukee. So guess what? You're not gonna go north from there. So- We're talking about the s- You can figure this out...
• 9:29
we're talking about the Steel Is Real ride. I'm just- Steel Is Real ride. Exactly. I'm just giving everyone- We'll start at Cafe Hollander Downer. Exactly. At 9:00 AM we'll be there, what, in a week?
• 9:36
So 9:00 AM on Saturday. You're going into Milwaukee. The 7th of September. The 7th of September. Tomorrow. And Phil Van Valkenburgh will be there.
• 9:45
Phil will be there, I believe, yep, whether, you know, with his- Trike or, or-... unfortunate health issues- I know... may or may not, um- Ride, but, but he-... do completely... Phil will be around. Phil will be around.
• 9:56
Right on. He did, he gave me some, uh, uh, old school cycling medals from France that he liked to collect as- Mm... potential prizes for you Steel bike riders. And here's the deal about this ride.
• 10:08
It's really not just Steel bikes. You can ride whatever bike you want. Ride whatever you want. We just won't judge you if you don't ride a Steel bike. Ride whatever you want. Oh, we'll judge you harder.
• 10:15
[laughs] Ride what you want, come along, enjoy the ride. Yeah. Have fun. Yeah, it's just a bike ride. And you know- There will be beer. There w- no attitude. Not as far as I know. There's no beer. 'Cause we're not...
• 10:29
Yeah, nobody knows about beer. That's weird. Beer. Beer. So there's, you know, classes like best road bike, best tandem, best bagel wheel. Are you gonna be a bagel wheel guy? Still haven't heard from my contact.
• 10:43
Bag- Oh... bagel wheel would be under 24 inch? Under... It's 20 or smaller. 20 or smaller. Yeah. Okay. Under 24. No, that's not true, 'cause you could have- Hmm... a...
• 10:53
I'm drawing a mental blank, but it came with 22-inch wheels. So what about if I ride my 24-inch cruiser? That's 24. I said 22. You, now you're making up rules to suit what you wanna ride. Damn right.
• 11:03
I don't like that at all. Oh. Why can't I remember this place? All right, the show's over. Get out. [laughs] You can stay on here as you want, but you can't stay here. The joyfulness is gone.
• 11:11
The joyfulness- Also, uh, uh, Al, our shop Al brought us, uh, Rold Gold, um- Not potato chips. They're pretzels... those pretzels are making me thirsty. Whatever. That's so you drink more beer.
• 11:23
That's why they invented pretzels. Exactly. They sound like this. [pretzels crunch] It's all about the Germans and the pretzels.
• 11:32
Well, now you're on weekly, so we don't have to pimp as many rides coming up, but, um, a couple other things on the calendar that people should be aware of is, um, of course, there's Schwamagen.
• 11:43
Um, and, and they've got, uh, a bunch of new things that they're trying to do this year. They're trying to...
• 11:48
They've got a, a beer party, and they've got a raffle with, like, four or five, like, uh, really high-end s- full suspension bikes.
• 11:55
So, um, and, uh, they, they keep hinting about this other bigger raffle that they've got, and they won't quite tell you what it is because they haven't got it 100% locked down.
• 12:05
But I've been up there recently, and I've been hanging out with, like, Ben Welnak and Joe Vadumancur and other people from the Sh- Schwamagen Mountain Bike Association board, and I believe it's a pickup truck raffle.
• 12:17
You know, one of those where you, like, can win an actual F-150 or something like that. So, um- You know whose pickup truck I wanna win? Gomez's. Have you seen that thing? Sure.
• 12:26
Gomez is actually raffling off his pickup truck I want that functioning vehicle He's raffling his pickup truck too? No. Well, not as far as he knows yet, but yes. [laughs] Yeah That was his brother's truck, right?
• 12:35
I don't know. That is a badass truck. I'm pretty sure that's what it was. He got it when his brother passed, and that thing is- It's still a badass truck... unbelievably gorgeous. A '53- Something like that, a Chevy...
• 12:44
Chevy, somewhere in there. It's- Oh, this is a new truck. This is not a vintage truck. Yeah. All right. Well- But, but, uh- Either way. But- Is it like a lease, like a two-year lease? No, I think you win it. Holy crap.
• 12:53
Like, you win a whole... Straight up you win a pickup truck if you buy a raffle ticket and win. And, um- I'm gonna take my pickup truck on them trails up there in Chequamegon...
• 13:01
and, and, and- [laughs] And you get to hang out at the Sawmill Saloon in Seeley and drink great beer and, and hang out with other- Do donuts in the parking lot... be surround- be surrounded by mountain bikers.
• 13:10
And- Which is my favorite place to stay when I'm doing the, uh, sh- when I'm doing the, the winter race. I love staying at that hotel right behind Seeley. It, it, yeah- It's so awesome... that's the Lenroot Lodge. Yeah.
• 13:19
It's, and- Lenroot... and you book it from... The one thing I don't like about, about staying there is, um, and I've stayed there forever, but, um, is when you call in to...
• 13:31
And you have to call the Sawmill Saloon to reserve your, your, your room, and
• 13:39
you don't know this, but they, they ask you for your name, your address, your credit card information, and they write it down in a paper notebook- Nice Yeah, old-timey ledger... that they keep behind the bar. Ooh.
• 13:52
So, like, there's- It's up north, it's up north Wisconsin, John... 15 years of people's names, addresses- And credit cards... and, well, credit cards [laughs] Half of them have expired by now.
• 14:01
Probably- It's the other half I have to worry... social security numbers, just for, you know, our protection. Yeah, date of birth and driver's license number. Just for our protection. Yeah.
• 14:09
They're selling that list every year for a fortune. [laughs] I think, I think they're, I think they're pretty honest up there in Northern Wisconsin. Yeah, you're full of shit. Well, uh- For the most part.
• 14:16
Well, the, uh, the opioid, um, epidemic has not hit there yet, has it? Cable Hayward area? Uh- Yeah, it has. Eh. What else are you gonna do? [laughs] In the strangest, in the strangest of places.
• 14:27
It's mostly a wonderful, wonderful world. [laughs] You know, since, um- [laughs] Cheers... why don't we... Should I j- I, I think I'm just gonna call Big Sexy.
• 14:39
Yeah, but we should, you know, since this is gonna be a weekly call-in now, we should probably tell people what the call-in number is in case they should ever decide they wanna call in and say- Why don't you guys do that?
• 14:47
It's, uh, JK. I don't have the right thing in front of me. 717. 717. 727. 2453. Bike. That's biking, folks. Yeah, what they said. Who brought JK? You guys did. Hey, I just didn't...
• 15:04
Eh, I'm transitioning- Yeah, but-... to using a memo thing on my new telephono. And, and your, yeah, your telephono that you... Yeah. Still growing pains. So should we talk about Tool?
• 15:13
I mean, they released a new album, I guess. After 13 years. It said all over Facebook, like, "Who's going to the Visalia Forum to see Tool?" I'm like, "I'm not." Me. I'd love to. I am. I liked Tool at the time.
• 15:24
Um, I missed Daikaiju again. I'm always out of town when they play. Yes, you did. Yes, you did. That's all right. My daughter was at the show. Guess what? She said there was fire. They're showing up again.
• 15:33
There was fire. There was fire. Oh, there was a van, there was a van on fire. [laughs] There was, there was, uh, some craziness. There were police. Oh, I didn't know that. Yep, there were police. Oh, okay. Yeah.
• 15:42
If you stayed a little bit longer, police arrived, so I missed Daikaiju again. Oh, that was, that was my birthday, so, uh- The person you have called is away from the phone. Oh. Their mailbox hasn't been set up yet.
• 15:51
The remix. Oh. Goodbye. [laughs] Goodbye. I guess- Who's scratching? I guess, I guess Big Sexy's- Who's scratching?... voicemail hasn't been set up yet. Right, bro. [laughs] Daikaiju was an excellent show, as always.
• 16:03
I'm so sorry I missed it, but I was- They'll come back... riding my bike. Give them like three weeks. Yeah. [laughs] They'll announce their next return visit. They are like perpetual tourers.
• 16:11
Yeah, they're, like, in Washington right now. Yeah, they actual- Yeah... they, they, okay, they- But they gotta come back. They go back and forth. It's like a pendulum, right? Yep, yep. And Milwaukee's- Yes...
• 16:19
in the middle somewhere. I hope so Exactly. Right? Might live there forever. Absolutely. Like, uh, Clutch is also one of tho- those prolifically just touring bands. Yep.
• 16:28
Where it's like, no, you're just kinda always on tour. Occasionally they'll drop an album, and that's awesome. But yes, didn't get in, and Daikaiju is along the same lines.
• 16:39
I'm not even sure when Daikaiju's last album was. '97? Probably. And, uh, it, yeah, they, they have that Gore theatrical presence- Oof... where it's like, it's like, "Oh, yeah, name me one-" It's following...
• 16:52
"name me one song." Can't. Can I back up? Exactly. Can I back up? If we didn't, if we didn't- Beep, beep, beep... get our call through, um, I wanna back up to events. Um, was it- We got, we gotta, we got a...
• 17:02
Hey, caller. We got a caller on the line. Oh, we got a caller? We do. Oh, okay. Hello. Hello, ladies. Hi, guys. Oh. [laughs] Ladies? Who, who knows, who knows whose voice this is? [laughs] I know that voice. [laughs] Mr.
• 17:16
Spinner Ryerson. Spinner, ladies and gentlemen. Spinner. Yes. Right on. What's going on?
• 17:21
I'm gonna make a little shout-out to Big Sexy, 'cause he called back, but he's gonna have to listen while we talk to Spinner, so he can listen to the show and, uh- Oh Spinner... backseat Big Sexy. Backseat Big Sexy.
• 17:33
[laughs] Just hang tight, brother. We'll get to you. We got Spinner. I just, uh, heckin' A, we, we rode with Spinner a couple weeks ago up in Michigan there, and, uh,
• 17:43
that was before he went down to scope out the SingleSpeed USA, um, shenanigans they're gonna plan, and I kinda wanted to check in with Spinner and see what's up. Yeah.
• 17:55
Um, my bike was a hell of a lot lighter down in Texas than it was on that Michigan trip. [laughs] Um, yeah. I fully, I fully, um- We stopped in and saw your buddy Vince at, uh, Chumba. Oh, right on.
• 18:07
We, uh, did some, yeah, we did some, uh, partying, checked out a lot of bars.
• 18:12
We checked out the ranch, uh, Rocky Hill Ranch in Smithville, which is about a hour, 45 minutes, hour outside of Austin, and that's where the event is gonna be. Um- Did the-...
• 18:24
yeah, registration, parties and rides, all that stuff... so did Lance have something to do with setting that up, or what's the lineage of Smith Ranch? Because it, it had some sort of- I'm a, I'm a racer guy.
• 18:35
I wanna make me a place Um, nope, it's not the Lance Armstrong one. He had his own, but there, there's several private ranches down there, and this is just one of many that are down there. Right on.
• 18:48
Um- So, so I got my 100,000 acres and I'm gonna put some, uh, mountain bike trails on it and- If I had 100,000 acres- Yeah... I'd put mountain bike trails on 'em.
• 18:55
There, there's a place two hours north of Las Vegas, which, you know what? There's nothing there, and this guy built a beautiful mountain bike area, and, and actually, people go there 'cause it's great. But, you know.
• 19:09
Huh. So. Outside of, like, is that... Is Boulder Canyon, is that north? Boulder- Where, uh-... Boulder would be-... anybody from Boulder knows about Boulder... yeah, that's like 20 mile, that's 20 miles west.
• 19:16
That's where they would have the outdoor demo. That's cool. This is, like, two hours. It's, like- Yeah... between Reno and Vegas, so I think a SingleSpeed USA destination- It's the-... at some point in the future-...
• 19:25
Hunter Thompson zone... might just be. Yeah, pretty much. [laughs] That's where Art Bell hangs out, pretty much. Oh. Well, Pahrump- Oh, wow. Pahrump. Oh, no, no, no. Pahrump is, Pahrump is west. This is north. Oh.
• 19:35
He said north, well. This is where there's nothing but aliens flying over you at night. Nice. But anyway. Ooh, fun. So what, what do you guys have planned so far for, uh, SSUSA?
• 19:49
Um, when we get the course kinda figured out, we have, uh, some beer sponsors. We have a couple different bars. We have one for registration and one that, uh, is gonna work out for the hosting, the decider tournament.
• 20:02
Um, we have some very interesting, um, decider games that might involve live animals, may or may not. We're gonna see how, uh [laughs] how it goes, uh, for the championship.
• 20:15
So, uh, we found a really nice, a really cool bar. You know, you never know what it's gonna be when you walk in, um, you know, kind of in dirty mountain bike clothes into a Texas small town bar.
• 20:26
But, uh, I had Chewy with me, so he broke the ice and- [laughs]...
• 20:29
we started talking to everybody in there, some locals or- I can only imagine how this went down [laughs] Did he, right, did he have to take his shirt off to get, to get entry? [laughs] Did, did Chewy have to?
• 20:39
Yeah, right. No, it's like- Like a, like a wooly mammoth walking in? Right. No, pretty much. No, I think, no, we didn't have to do that. It was cool- Look at my shoulder... downtown, there is people doing this every day.
• 20:48
[laughs] Cool, man. Yeah, there's some of that. So what are the, the- But, yeah, um- What are the, what are the dates? But, uh, November, I think it's actually November 2nd and 3rd.
• 21:00
Second might be the Saturday, but, uh, I know Drunk Cyclist is gonna have a Halloween ride in downtown Austin. Um, Chumba's actually doing, like, a happy hour the Friday before for people coming in before registration.
• 21:15
Um, there's, uh, the AssMen, so the Austin Single Speed group. They're gonna be doing, uh, some daily rides there on Friday. See how they did that? And then everything- Yes. [laughs]...
• 21:25
the official events start on Saturday. Cool. Hey, speaking of- Yeah, Ass. They got a cool logo... let me, let me throw a little plug in for Chumba just because I got in on this deal already.
• 21:34
But, um, they are doing a pre-order on their new Stella, the new version of their Stella 27.5 bike titanium version. Stella. And I think you have to order it- Oh... by today if this is on podcast time.
• 21:49
It's Friday the whatever that would be. Uh, 4 or 5, it's the 6th- The 5th, uh-... I believe. This Friday, the 6th. But they got a heck of a deal of, and, and these... I tell you what, folks.
• 22:01
Chumba knows what they're doing when they make a bike, and this is a way to get a- Yes, they do...
• 22:04
US-made titanium 27 plus, more of a endurance race, bike packing slash turn it into whatever you want kind of bike more than the Sendero that I've been riding, and I'm kinda stoked for that bike.
• 22:17
Noticing Dave Schlabowski's eyes light up as you talk about this. Yeah. [laughs] Like, "Huh? What? What? Huh? What? What?" We saw him, uh- So keep going about this. What's the deal?
• 22:26
He had a couple on order when we were down there. Yeah. Uh, we walked into their factory and, uh, their, well, their office and their factory. They're building them while we were in there. It was cool to see it.
• 22:34
Um, it's a, it's a small little operation, but he, he had a lot of bikes going on in there. Yeah, they build the, they, they- So it was, it was really cool...
• 22:42
so the, I mean, they build the steel bikes right there where you were, and then they have one of the best ti- ti makers in the country build their titanium bikes, which is badass. Yeah. So you gonna finish?
• 22:54
What's this deal? Yeah, I mean, that's American-made. I saw it made right there in America. I don't know. It is a different deal to- Go to their website. Look at it. It's a different deal to build.
• 23:01
I mean, uh- You have to- You have to backflow the, the tubes with- Get your argon in there... argon. Oh, yeah... so, so it's a different setup, and they may not have the setup. And a- a, I built at Waterford.
• 23:12
I TIG welded and I braised at Waterford, and, um, and, and ti is, is, is not necessarily harder, but it's different. So, like, you can be a really good steel welder and, and not be good at ti. You just have to get...
• 23:28
It's, it's a slightly different thing. It flows different. Absolutely. Uh, the keystone's different. Um, so- It's all about, uh, experience... keyhole's different rather. I'm sorry.
• 23:36
Um, so i- it makes sense that they'd have different welders do it. The welders at Waterford are freaking some of the best Walderford, welders I've ever- Water- they're Walderfords. So [laughs] Walderford.
• 23:47
The welders at Waterford are some of the best- [laughs] God damn you, Aaron... welder welders I have ever s- Jumping in at Dr. Seuss time... I've ever seen.
• 23:53
We had a lot of guys apply for jobs there when we'd have an opening, uh, that were, like, certified, you know, welders and- Yeah... and, and they- Like D-... they could- Like Dave I Blow Through Tubes Bridge welder.
• 24:03
[laughs] Yeah, I got that guy. Not necessarily, not necessarily, like- Oh, unless you're going-... ripping on, ripping on our ironworker pals but-... unless you're going lines...
• 24:10
but the difference between welding a, a, a.4 millimeter, you know, you know, tube and, and what everybody else learns to weld on is, is very different. Absolutely.
• 24:19
And the angles, and you have to pull your tungsten out of your, your TIG torch and stuff like that. It's a- Right... it's a whole 'nother different deal. That's what she said.
• 24:27
[laughs] Hey, anyway, it, it makes sense- The show has gone downhill... that's why I buy my bikes instead of build them, geez. Right on... makes sense that Chumba does that.
• 24:33
I'm, I'm curious though, um, is, even though it's a short, a much shorter race than she's actually doing it since it's Austin-centric and Chumba's involved, is Alexandra Houchen gonna race?...
• 24:48
the registration lately, but you can go out to, it's on BikeReg, you can go out there and see who's coming. I think last time I checked, which was a couple weeks ago, there was like 40 or 50 out there. So. Right on.
• 25:01
Hey, Spinner, do you mind if we take another caller? You wanna hang on the line or do you wanna get going? I'll hang on. All right, we got, uh, let's see. Who's this? Let's find out. Hey, welcome to our new caller.
• 25:15
Hello. [laughs] I've been waiting. We've been, yeah- Hello... been sitting in the queue. I've been waiting. Hitting redial. All right. So I gotta tell you, folks, I'm sorry.
• 25:25
[laughs] I know Big Sexy's waiting, but this is not Big Sexy. Oh. Oh, not that, not that he's not Big Sexy, but- [laughs]... this is Mr. Chris Daisy.
• 25:32
I was excited for a minute, 'cause I thought, I, I thought you were, guys were calling me Big Sexy at first. I was like, "Ooh, what is it? That sounds nice." [laughs] That's Mr. Chris- [laughs] That's Mr.
• 25:41
Chris Daisy, ladies and gentlemen. Hi, Big Sexy. Hi. Um- Hi, Radio Land... Radio Land, we haven't had you on a show for a long time.
• 25:49
I, I don't know if, uh, the other podcasters in bike podcasting land have had you on recently, but, uh, it's good to have you on our show, sir. No, you've been painfully, painfully ignoring me.
• 26:00
Uh, yeah, uh, but let's make up for it right now. Right on. So just, uh, so everybody knows who- [laughs]... we're talking to, Mr. Chris Daisy owns Zion Cyclery down in Zion, Illinois. Illinois.
• 26:10
And he has a whole slew- Yeah... of events coming up down there in Illinois land, with basically the only beach we can ride in- Yes... the, you know, couple hundred miles of where we are right now. So do tell.
• 26:25
I own it all. [laughs] No, but my beach- You actually, you, you, you ended up grabbing the, the, like, the, the hotel, right?
• 26:35
Well, you don't t- I, I- You doesn't own the hotel, but- Who, wait, first of all- Or co-opted it... who, who all am I, am I talking to? Who, who am I talking to? We'll never tell. No. The world.
• 26:44
Just the voices in your head. All right. Uh- Worldwide... well, [laughs] actually right now, you got Spinner on, uh, long distance, you got Tony Burger, Dave Slabowski, you got Jay Kay and myself. All right, sweet. Cool.
• 26:58
Whole gang. All right, I got it. Yeah, that's everybody.
• 27:01
Yeah, I mean, um, that's, it is the whole gang, and I hope to see you at all these events, uh, of course, of course, 'cause you've been so gracious as to come to the, you know, past events.
• 27:11
So we're taking it up a notch this year, I feel. Yeah, tell us about the venue- And, um-... because the venue is kickass. Yeah, that's what- That's the whole point of this deal is- Treat me and cool me up...
• 27:21
I mean, the events are great, but the venue itself is why even Big Sexy, who's- Yeah... still waiting on the line, should, uh- [laughs]... probably direct his trike up here and, uh, go out on the beach with us.
• 27:35
Yeah, so basically, um, you know, for years we've been doing these cool beach rides and pretty much riding right past that beach resort hotel and not really paying them much attention other than hoping we don't get kicked off their property or their grass, part of their yard or- Ceremony...
• 27:53
the wedding ceremony we might be interrupting. [laughs] I was like, "Ah."
• 27:58
And one day I got a call from them, and they were all hip to be like, "Hey, how do we get in on these cool rides you're doing, because we see you bringing all these people across our front yard?"
• 28:10
And so Gomez and I sort of hashed a battle plan and, uh, went in there to present and scored ourselves at least, uh, three events this coming winter. Wow. The, and so the first one is in November?
• 28:26
Yep, November 2nd, we're capping off the grand- Sorry, Spinner, that's Single Speed USA weekend. [laughs] I know. Well, yeah, if you're not in Texas- Competing, competing events...
• 28:36
if you wanna, depending on how, [laughs] depending on how, how, you know, how local you wanna be. [laughs] Now you two go. Daikaiju, go. A derby, a derby for the date? [laughs] And go. If you're more into 42 degrees and,
• 28:50
if you're into 42 degrees and rain, definitely come to our event. [laughs] If you like triple digit heat, uh, yeah, then, uh, come down to Texas, but, uh- [laughs]... no, it's, it's a bummer it's the same date.
• 29:02
I'd like to do that one. But- Yeah, we got, uh- That's okay, Spinner, there's two other dates. Yeah. Yes. Yes. So basically the first one kicks off, it's just a, an overnighter.
• 29:15
It's like a fat bike slumber party, if you will. Um, that's November 2nd. It's the Grand Funduro Beach Ride and Ball. So we're basically gonna have, uh, it's a Saturday night. You check in about 3:00, normal hotel time.
• 29:30
We'll give you about an hour or so to get yourself ready. We'll cruise the beach until it gets nice and dark, 'cause that won't take too long around that time of year. Um, then we'll just have some chill time.
• 29:42
The hotel is really cool. It's got a nice pool, really nice gym, um, right on the beach, and, uh, there's a restaurant right inside, so you can eat there, you can eat in Zion, whatever.
• 29:56
And then, uh, we've got their entire really cool ballroom to throw our own party in. And, uh- Did you say grow our own party? Overlook the lake. That sounds impressive. We could grow our...
• 30:08
Well, it's- Yeah, it is Illinois... which will bring us to the second event. We'll pass- You can grow... the, the second event happens in January, and, and you guys know what happens in January in Illinois. Oh. Oh.
• 30:21
Silence. Come, come back to the- What happens in January? No? Come back to the light, Caroline. Break, break for 1-9. I missed what happened in January. Full- No, we, we go to, um- Full rec- Yeah...
• 30:29
full recreational legalization. Sorry, did I stutter? In Wisconsin? What? No. In Illinois. That's fucking great happening. Damn it. Man, you guys are ill-informed. I know.
• 30:41
We're, no, we're- You think just because, you know, it doesn't happen in Wisconsin, it doesn't happen at all, but hey. No, it just takes like- It's, uh, it's-... three years for it to come up here. Full-
• 30:51
Same thing happened with Starbucks Just know that- I know this... if you bring a little something, if you bring a little something to burn on the beach this January, ain't gonna be illegal.
• 31:02
What if we don't buy it in Illinois? [laughs] You can leave it in your hand, baby. I, I'm completely ignorant to this entire topic. I'm in- this is like, I can't believe I've been living in a hole this long.
• 31:13
Hey, uh- Dude, we're going like the full Colorado. Are you kidding me? Wow. Yeah. It's, it's signed. It's a done deal. It's science- Yeah... at this point. Thank, thanks. Congratulations. Yeah. Yeah.
• 31:26
We'll see you in like- Yeah, we'll be seeing you boys... what, like four years? Five years. [laughs] I'm, I'm, I'm glad all our tax dollars are going south. Listen to me. I'm coming to Hawaii up here. Yeah, no shit.
• 31:33
Ooh, I'm not sure. [laughs] Oh, my gosh. Hey, uh- Whoa. [laughs] Not quite ready for that yet. [laughs] So, uh, we do have one more caller. I don't know if we should make this a big, huge party, but, uh- Party down...
• 31:47
Chris has been around. I'll be there. This is like '90s Party Line, man. Can you guys just, uh, can you guys just, uh, let, let us talk to Big Sexy real quick? 'Cause he's, I wanna hear what he has to say, man.
• 31:58
Where is he? Okay. Let's find out. Let's find out. Let's watch or listen. Big Sexy. Hey, Jason. Hello. Dude, have you been listening? Hey, man. What's up? You been listening to the show? Yes.
• 32:11
Have you been feeling left out? Yes, I'm having a great time. You're not left out anymore, man. [laughs] That was really cool, man. I, I was just listening, having, having a great time listening, man.
• 32:23
Uh, greetings from Bangor, Maine. Bangor, Maine. Nice. Holy hell, you were in Montpelier last time I talked to you. Wow. Yep. Uh, we're cruising, man. Uh, me, me and He- me and Heather have gone through
• 32:38
ups and downs and rights and rounds, man. Tell us about it. Yeah, you had, uh, you had some-- You wanted to tell us about, uh, Pennsylvania and it... Okay. So folks, who doesn't, who doesn't know who Jason is?
• 32:51
Nope, nobody put their hand up, but Jason's riding across the country on a Schwinn Meridian tricycle and stopping- Yeah... and stopping at state capitals all along the way.
• 33:01
The, the titanium version of the Schwinn Meridian? [laughs] Unfortunately, no. Unless you wanna buy one for him. I bet he, he'll take donations. Well- Matter of fact, Jason takes donations... I'll tell you what.
• 33:10
She's a warrior princess. This- Nice... this lady, she thinks she's, she, she thinks she's a mountain bike. Okay. Don't dissuade her. Now, what I wanna tell y'all is beware of Google Maps. Yeah.
• 33:26
It's only been that way- Beware of anything Google... I was, I was, right. No, but I'm, I'm telling you, I was just w- just east of Pittsburgh and it said bike path. A nice bike path. I got a six pack of beer.
• 33:41
I'm like, "Yay, a bike path." And 32 miles in it started to get deep, like deep gravel. Like you can't ride, a tricycle at least, through this gravel.
• 33:57
And then it started going down the mountain. Up this mountain, beautiful, beautiful. Then down this mountain it started getting really deep and like gouges and, and sharp rocks and logs and boulders.
• 34:13
I'm like, "This isn't a bike path." [laughs] Anyway, then at the end of it, [laughs] then at, then like at the bottom of it it was pitch black. It, it was dark because I, I did not time this right.
• 34:30
[coughs] And that's the amateur in me. But, um, I found a picnic table with a roof over it and I'm like, "Awesome. Place to camp," right?
• 34:41
So I set up my camp and then I saw a little green light in the corner and I'm like, "Outlet, yes." Right? That sounds good.
• 34:51
So I sat there and watched Netflix all night and got some Zs and I woke up to this stone arch bridge with a train bridge over it and a dam and a river and mountains. It was so beautiful.
• 35:06
You can check out my Facebook page for, for the picture of that. And then it was a decision I had to make. Uh, take the car, the, the car directions out of there
• 35:20
or take the bike path directions, and I chose the bike path. Uh-oh. Oops. [laughs] Oops. Because we went back up another mountain
• 35:35
and, uh, 26 miles up this mountain it started getting really shitty again. Uh, um, sorry for the language. I'm, I, I guess I don't have to be. Well, we're already explicitly- Yeah, we're explicitly rated.
• 35:48
Don't worry about it. Oh. Um, but then- [laughs]... I'm getting to the point of that. So it started going down the mountain and it starts getting really bad again. Uh-oh.
• 36:00
And then I come to the cliff of the mountain and there are three flights of stairs down the mountain on this bike path that Google Maps has showed me. Oh.
• 36:18
Well, don't rely completely on Google Maps. It's still in beta. It was- [laughs]... 26 miles of that. Life, life is- 26 miles of that. Oh, wow. Actually, that's, uh- No. You had to turn around? Oh, that's a second. No.
• 36:32
I put the pedals, I put the pedals into the back of my legs and we went one step at a time down that cliff. Ooh. Wow, man. If you would've been living in Wisconsin out your window you would've heard me screaming.
• 36:46
[laughs] If there was a gas station at the bottom of those stairs I would've been arrested. For, for language or other?... or a- anything. [laughs] I would've grabbed the first guy I saw and just punched him.
• 37:03
[laughs] But th- then a- after the, after the stairs, thank you, Google Maps, for the, for the bike path with stairs. [laughs] I had 17 mile
• 37:20
of bike path straight shot to a town, and I got- I had plenty of time to calm down. Well- Well, you're- But yeah, be careful. Well, Sexy- Google Maps can steer you wrong.
• 37:34
Google Maxis, Google, Google Maps aside, Sexy, apparently you made it to Portland, Maine. So, um, what's, what's the next, uh, destination? Bangor, Maine. That's on the bus- Bangor, Maine. Bangor. Maine. Bangor.
• 37:48
Who knows their capitals? I, well, I do know somebody in Biddeford, Maine, which is south of Portland. Um, uh, Mark Sirak. Anybody here know Mar- remember Mark Sirak? Sure.
• 37:59
Mark is working at Hyperlite Mountain Gear in Biddeford, Maine, and I would love, I would love to connect him with, with Big Sexy. There you go. Jason had- If you're heading, if you're heading in that direction.
• 38:14
Well, I'll tell- I'll tell you what, between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg almost killed me. [laughs] But then after Harrisburg, it's been pretty smooth sailing. Um,
• 38:25
uh, and, and God, you, Vermont and New Hampshire and Maine, they call it the tri-state. It, it's absolutely gorgeous. So where are you currently? I'm, I'm, I'm just a little bit south of Bangor.
• 38:43
Be careful. You don't wanna say Banger. Bangor. Not Banger. Bangor. You gotta say Bangor, or they, or they get on you in Maine about that. Oh. Well, tell- Yeah, those East Coasters, man, they get a little...
• 38:56
[tongue clicks] Little feisty. Yeah. Well, take up- [laughs]... take up Dave on hooking up with this guy in, uh- In Biddeford... Biddeford if you can, 'cause, uh,
• 39:06
all, all the friends you can get- I'll tell you, I'm thinking-... on the trail are good. Yeah. Bang- I'm, I'm going south from here. I'm still trying to get used to seeing like Red Sox and Patriots stuff everywhere.
• 39:16
I'm like, "Oh, God." [laughs] And like, and people can tell I'm looking. I'm like, "Oh my God, this guy's wearing a Red Sox jersey. He's coming up to talk to me. What do I say?" Yeah.
• 39:27
I don't know why I forgot this before, but I had a question to ask each of the callers today. So I guess we missed Spinner and, uh, Chris. But we still got Jason on the line. Here's my question for you, Jason.
• 39:39
What are you carrying in your- Right... repair kit on your bicycle right now? Well, I mean, it, it's kind of a mess, but, uh, my boy Hal at the Bicycle Rack in, uh,
• 39:54
in New Paltz, New York, gave me these patches that you don't have to use glue or nothing like that. You get, you just put it over the little hole, and, and it, it sticks right there.
• 40:07
It almost lasts as long as a fix-a-flat, but not quite. [laughs] I remember that he had a fix-a-flat repair in Wisconsin, I believe. It lasted him a long time. [laughs] Yep, all the way to Milwaukee.
• 40:19
I put, I put a fix-a-flat in the right tire in Harrisburg, and it lasted me almost to Montpelier. Wow. Fix-a-flat. I mean, it, it only lasted- It's the original tubeless tire. [laughs] It's the tubeless tube tire.
• 40:34
[laughs] Tubeless tubed tire. No. Exactly. Before duct tape there was- I wanna ask you guys. Do you know what- [laughs] Do you know what comes out of Waterbury, Vermont? No. Do tell.
• 40:47
Ben & Jerry's ice cream comes out of Waterbury, Vermont. Oh. Oh, hell yeah. Hell yeah. Oh, hell yeah. That's awesome.
• 40:53
I was in Waterbury, and I needed a new tire, so I was in this bike shop, and I, and I had, I got the funds on, uh, on my, uh, on my PayPal. So I got a new tire, and the guy, "Oh, we'll put it on for you."
• 41:06
I'm like, "Oh, you might wanna let me take it." "Oh, no, we got it. We got it. That's a fix-a-flat."
• 41:11
And I said, and, and they didn't listen to me, and then once they let the air out, and all that fix-a-flat glue came up there, spread it all over the place. It was hilarious. All right, man.
• 41:20
Hey, Jason, we're kinda losing you a little bit, so I'm gonna let you go and catch up with you in a couple weeks. How's that sound? Yes. Um, hey, call me anytime. I'm on the road. I'm, I'm heading south.
• 41:33
We're going urban pretty soon here, so. All right. Well, let me know when you get close to Biddeford, and I'm gonna hook you up with Mark Sirak, who's gonna show you a good time in Maine. Oh, yeah. All right.
• 41:47
[laughs] I'm gonna go get a couple beers and call it a night, guys. Thank you so much for having me on. Thanks, brother. Any time, Sexy. Right on. All right, see you soon. All right, man. Wow.
• 41:59
That's quite the, uh, collage of colors. [laughs] That was entertaining. So, um, yeah, right? A wonderful quilt work. But he, but he made it across the country. I mean, he... He's sort of- Yeah.
• 42:09
Were you here, were you here la- were you here last time we talked to him? He's, he's, he's sorta- No. No, I wasn't. No. But he's sorta done now, right? I mean, but he's- Yeah. Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no.
• 42:17
But he's- But he has reached part- Well, this part, yeah... some people might consider this done. Yeah, but he started, he only- Yeah, but not him. Not him [laughs] He reached the Atlantic Ocean. He started in Minnesota.
• 42:28
Right. He lives in New Orleans. Nawlins. Right. I still think he has the whole west to go. Oh, so he's gonna go back the other way and come back? He's gonna go as long as he can, I believe.
• 42:38
No, I think he's going east, Appalachian style. So yeah. And then down, down, down. Down. Well, you know, it's getting cold up there now- So, like-... so you head south... can y'all still hear me?...
• 42:46
go, like going to... Can you still hear me? He's still on. [laughs] Can we still hear- I might be some- you know, I'm going all the way south to Florida to visit my mom, and then I'm going to New Orleans.
• 42:58
I'm gonna work for Mardi Gras, and then I'm taking another leg. Okay. USA. All right. Nice. And then are you going to California then after that? Well, not a, not, not right away. The west kinda scares me.
• 43:10
It gets big out there and lots of miles between towns and stuff. I don't know. I'm, I'm gonna, I'm, I'm considering it, though. All right. You can do it. Right on, man. Of course I can.
• 43:24
[laughs] Whether I want to or- Do I want to? [laughs] No shit. [laughs] All right, dude. We'll, we'll talk to you again. All right, man. You guys did great. Thank you. Take it easy. All right, bye.
• 43:34
Brad, keep it alive, man. Enjoy it. All right. Well, now. That was fun. Let's, uh, I got, we gotta, we gotta get Chris back on the horn real quick. Chris. 867-5309. No, what was our- I, I- What's our number here?
• 43:50
757- It's- 727 717 [laughs] 727. 7- I don't have it in front of me... for, for, for I normally do... Frank today. Goddammit. 717-727-2453. Mike. Every freaking week now, so- Thank, thank God for Greg... here's the deal.
• 44:06
Hey. Nobody, nobody has to remember is it this week or that week or this week anymore. Exactly. No, yeah. Now it's every week. This is growing pains. So all you have to do is call in and win. Yeah. Oh.
• 44:14
How do they listen live if they wanna listen live? Call in. Walk in. Call in. There's a, that's the only way you can listen live. Is to call in. Otherwise- You should walk... you're gonna have a two-day delay.
• 44:24
[sighs] I'm gonna call Chris back real quick. Call him back. Talk amongst yourselves. So I was, uh, informed by somebody going, bitching about, uh, trail etiquette. And, I mean, you can go all day.
• 44:41
I mean, we can just kinda- Were you crossing Locust Bridge? No, no, somebody tell, bitching at me about, you know, just going off, and it was about ringing a bell- [sings] Can ring my bell... from 75 feet out.
• 44:56
[sings] Can ring my bell... with a dog- [sings] My bell... making the dog nervous, and then 50 feet out again. No, 25 is the acceptable- What? That's, that's- There's no rule... that, that is fascinating.
• 45:09
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. There's a lot of dog people, a lot of rules- Whatever, whatever... I'll tell you that much... it was just somebody just farting it in the air, and I was like, "Okay." There's no rule.
• 45:18
I have a friend. I was just like, no. I have a friend- I just want, I wanna hit it going, like, "Hey," just, "I'm coming behind you." I normally am blasting fucking music, so- Right...
• 45:28
if you, if you're not listening to me, you're not gonna hear the bell. Right, right. Well, a lot of people- [laughs]... on the trails are, are listening to music as well- Yep, yeah...
• 45:36
so they're not hearing a bell either. Exactly. So, I mean, we kinda all just have to, like, try to be humans and get along, and, like- Fuck that. Sorry. [laughs] Out loud voice. God. All right, folks.
• 45:46
Quit being Rodney King in this. Chris is back. Hi, Chris. Chris is- Hi, Chris. Welcome. And another thing. Talking, we're, we're talking about trail etiquette right now and how much- Fuck that.
• 45:55
You don't have to worry about that on the beach. Right? Uh, the entire beach is your trail, so just stay away from me. Yeah. Pretty much like that, right? [laughs] Unless it's a dirty. So anyway- [laughs] Dirty...
• 46:08
where were we, man? We went off on a tangent there, and I, you know, I was, I was- Yeah, I know... running out of battery, so I gotta hang up on y'all. I, I for- I forgot how to wrangle the, the cat herd.
• 46:16
I'm trying to keep everybody in the conversation, and it's like, yeah, it's kinda getting weird. Um- Whatever. Except for Fulton or Simon... I, hey, Chris, I sent you a guy for a fat bike.
• 46:26
I don't know if he came down there, but, uh, you know, uh- Yeah, I saw that... I like to, I like to send- Come here. Let's go buy our bikes... I like to send people to other shops to buy their bikes- [laughs]...
• 46:34
if we, if we can't- [laughs]... if we can't service them here. I'm not sure as a shop owner that's a good idea, but- Hey... I'd have to know the, like, the specifics. If, uh, yeah.
• 46:43
If anyone else, if I would send anybody else's business- He's on his wrists right now. Ah... no, if, if, if anybody else, I, I'd send them to Chris. [laughs] 100%. Oh, thank you.
• 46:51
Hey, not every, not everybody- Thank you, Chris... can have a 28,000 square foot shop or- Sure... however big your shop is, so pretty fucking big. Ooh, I wish it was that big, but- Right? No, we're like, uh- Dude...
• 47:03
we're, we're decent size. Yeah, you are. I saw that your, I, I saw your, I saw your dad on a bike the other day. I'm like, you, you remem- [laughs]
• 47:12
I've been coming down to his shop since Chris was 17 years old, I think, somewhere in there. Yeah.
• 47:18
A long time, and Don and, and, and your mom and blah, blah, blah, everybody was, you know, you were just a young punk in Orange, Frozen Orange back then. [laughs] Right. Do you have any r- Frozen Orange, uh, music left?
• 47:34
Um, I have, like, boxes of old CDs, because back in those days, you couldn't just make CDs on demand out of your computer. You had to actually order, like, 1,000 at a crack,
• 47:46
and, you know, for a local band to sell, what, 1,000 CDs I guess [laughs] made was not, not all that easy. So I, I've got a few left over here and there. Yeah. I s- I still have one somewhere, but- I know...
• 47:58
that was a fun band, dude. Solid ride premiums too. It was fun, yeah. Yeah. Also, Chris is one of the most- I gotta, we gotta-... awesome musicians in the world. Awesome. Aw, thank you.
• 48:09
We got a gig, uh, coming up, uh, this weekend, uh, Saturday the 7th at Paddy O's in Kenosha. Awesome dive bar, ton of cool bands on the bill, so check it out. Uh, go to xuncle.com or our Facebook page.
• 48:24
Does X Uncle go any further northern than the Kenowere sh- Kenowere [laughs] W- yes, we've gone as far as Wrecking- I'm just kidding. Oh, no, no... and, um, Milwaukee. No, no, no. Milwaukee. All right. Wow.
• 48:38
I know I- We'll get you at Quarters somewhere or Savannah for sure. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. It's a dance. It's a dance.
• 48:44
We need, we need- We were up in Port Washington for the first, the first Funduro, uh- I remember that... the Rocking Beach Funduro. Yeah, that's where my, uh, my testicles were in jeopardy.
• 48:54
[laughs] Thanks to, uh, Patch Mage. Yeah. [laughs] So are you gonna play at all of the Fun- Yeah. Is your band playing at all of the Funduros, or are there, what's the music, uh, at each of these Funduro events?
• 49:08
All right, yeah, let's talk about that. So the first Funduro in the springtime we did was the Rockin' Beach with that awesome bandshell and a couple of live bands. Mm-hmm.
• 49:17
The second Funduro was the Funduro Rodeo at Silver Lake Park, and that's where we had a friend of mine, uh, Scott Beers, do his, uh, classic country, because it, uh, went along with the theme.
• 49:31
Um, I'll also like to point out that I won the goat roping trophy, so. [laughs] Yes, that was very, uh, very impressive of your goat roping prowess. [laughs] Yeah.
• 49:41
Uh, and then our third Grand Funduro, uh, the one we were talking about in November, um, that's going to be a DJ party. So that's gonna be put on your cocktail clothes and shake what your mama gave you.
• 49:56
So, you know- Very cool... spanning the spectrum of musical taste- Ah... is what we're trying to do with these Funduro events. Cop car just went by. That was cool.
• 50:07
And- And he's- We were, uh, on the subject of the January event, which I was describing as being fully recreational legal. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. But it's a- That's what, that's what kinda put us off the rails.
• 50:20
I'm like, "Oh, shit." Yeah, it really is where we went off the rails. [laughs] That's why I went outside for a second. Yeah. Yeah. What's legal now? So in between January- I gotta go check the pressure on my tires...
• 50:29
between Funduro and- I'm, I, I'm gonna look in my drawer for some gummies real quick. Hold on. [laughs] Just in case. Talk amongst yourselves. Talk amongst yourself. So- All right. Yeah, exactly, but that, that event...
• 50:40
So typically, that January ride, in, in years past, as you may know, has been one of our most popular of the year, and we'll get anywhere from 100 to 150 people to come out and rock that.
• 50:53
Um, what used to be just a one-day event, and now we're turning it into an entire weekend retreat, and there may or may not- Oh, nice... well, okay, let's, there may be a, uh, Huge Ass race, uh, dropping in- Oh, really?
• 51:09
... in Zion on that weekend with us. There's a Huge Ass race gonna be in Zion? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh. Huge Ass. Nice. It, we, it's, it's in the works, and so- Nice...
• 51:18
uh, part of the big weekend, uh, will be, uh, racing, party, bike demos, you name it. Um- Hammerschlagen... we have our usual food and- If there's, if there's Huge Ass, there's Hammerschlagen.
• 51:31
There'll be Hammerschlagen, and there, um, the area of, uh, we'll be using will most likely be that campground, remember, where we've done a couple of, uh, camping events in the past.
• 51:41
Um, because it's empty, they said that'd be the best spot to lay out the racecourse, and I think it could be a really cool course set up through that campground. So that'll be really fun. Right on.
• 51:52
We're eating- And of course, Zion Fest will, we'll do our usual- We're eating, by the way, Chris, we're eating gummy, we're eating gummy bears legal or not, so, I think they'll fuck themselves. Nice. There you go.
• 52:00
Well, I went outside. Get you ready for the events early, uh, like [laughs] like a training run. Just, just- What? You keep handing it to me. We're not even- You keep taking them away.
• 52:07
[laughs] We're not even gonna taper for, like, another, like, two months. [laughs] Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, we're good. This thing is absolutely not for anybody in this room. This is no, no, can't have that. [laughs] No.
• 52:19
That is bad. Well, it's not bad. It's good, but it's, whatever. It's so bad, it's good. Yeah. So good, it's bad. Thank God we're gonna send all our tax dollars to Illinois. That's my whole thing. Sorry.
• 52:30
I just went outside. Ah, ha. Yeah, you guys are aware that you can like- I went outside to hit the, uh, real world.
• 52:37
You know, you can, uh, y- it's okay for you, or, or, well, I'm a cheesehead now too, 'cause I live on the other side of the border after this happened, but- Oh, yeah, you're a Wisconsinite now...
• 52:47
you can go ahead and try after that. We can buy- Yeah, I am. Yeah. We can buy what? What about transporting across state lines? Well, that's your own problem. Ah. [laughs] Yeah, I'm not, oh, shit.
• 52:59
That's what I- All right... that's what I always thought about the White Castles. Excuse me. Excuse me. Officer Friendly, please pay no attention to the rules that you, you found on that thing.
• 53:06
You live closer to the White Castles now. Yeah, White Castles. He's very close. You live, you live closer to the White Castles now. All right, Chris. Yeah.
• 53:15
Anything else you wanna say before we wrap this really off-the-tracks, uh, show up? But it was great having everybody call in. Well, there will be a... Yeah.
• 53:25
If, uh, if both events go well, there will be a springtime event, but we're gonna keep that a little bit more details to come later.
• 53:32
So come out to this, uh, to these events and show the support for this hotel, because, uh, it's a really cool spot to, to stay- Absolutely... in, like, even though there's nothing else going on. 112%.
• 53:43
Try and get me, get me some, get me- Yeah, and it's the- Get me some pimping, uh, photos from there, and we'll put them in the show notes, 'cause I've been by the place about 1,000 times- Oh, yeah...
• 53:51
and I've never actually taken a picture of it. Yeah, just with my memory. So if you know her, that's how it is. They renovated. They've done a really nice job on the renovations.
• 54:02
Um, we're gonna do some live podcasts there, uh, on the January event. They've got a grand piano I get to lay my hands on and be the music maestro for that, so- We're actually gonna have-... I think, uh- Wait a sec...
• 54:14
we'll have a really good time. Excuse me. Let, let me announce this right now. We're actually gonna have dueling podcasts. Ding, da-da-ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Dueling podcast.
• 54:20
Da-da-di-di-di-ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. We'll all bring our rigs, and we'll all podcast. I like it. With heavy bass beats in the background. Yeah, right?
• 54:31
Yeah, this is along the lines of, like, I'm gonna take, uh, mushrooms and LSD and see which one wins. Yeah, same thing pretty much. Don't do that. [laughs] Don't do that. All right, ladies.
• 54:42
That'll be next year's retreat, so... [laughs] All right. All right, Chris. Thanks for calling. Uh- All right, brother... we're probably gonna talk to you again, I, I, I assume, so. Before January? Probably. Oh, yes.
• 54:55
I imagine. Yeah. [laughs] Probably in November, probably at dueling podcasts. All right, brother. Talk to you next week, dude. Love ya. Later. Talk to you soon. Okay, man. Sounds good, dude. Peace. Thank you. Later.
• 55:06
Well, I guess this weekly thing makes us twice as blathery, doesn't it? Twice as long on the... Yeah, exactly. Well, it's just- It's almost 8:00. That's the point. It's the pretzels, I tell you. It's the people.
• 55:17
The whole deal with this deal is I don't think we... Do we have to talk that much? No. People call in and they talk. Dave, anything else you wanna talk about? Yes, but let's save it for next time. [laughs] Yes.
• 55:32
Yeah, Dave has, Dave has thousands of hours of stuff to talk about. I, I, I don't sleep a lot, so I th- I sit up all night thinking of things to say to other people when I actually get- During podcasts...
• 55:44
when I actually get to be around them. We got- And they l- and they let me sit in the same room with them. We have a solid four minutes left. Um, well, all right. The one thing I will say is- [laughs]...
• 55:54
uh, um, upcoming October 4th is the Wisconsin State Bike Summit, and I was the previous executive director and deputy director and blah blah blah at the- Is that in Wausau? It's in Wausau. Wausau.
• 56:07
And it's a mountain bike focus. Not only is there a- I love Sylvan Hill. That place is awesome... at Sylvan, but they're, there's, they're opening a new trail, ribbon cutting Ringley, um, Trail.
• 56:17
So there's brand-new trails to ride at that summit that you cannot ride until you come to the summit October 4th. I'm summiting. So it's- [laughs]... super worthwhile.
• 56:29
The, the whole point, I'm not at the bike fit anymore, but, but the, the event has kinda got a energy of its own and a momentum of its own.
• 56:36
And, and the, the point of, like, the whole summit was, like, to change it from, like, a bunch of, like, sitting in, uh, a hotel with a bunch of breakout rooms with, like, um, uh, you know, a bunch of- Lame...
• 56:50
power, PowerPoints to ri- Do you see here... to riding, to riding. Yeah. A weekend of riding. Way better. Yeah. With still- Which it should be... still educational things going on.
• 56:58
Uh, you wanna sit in a room- You see over here... but- That that, that, that- You wanna sit in a room with PowerPoints- That's a rock... that's happening. [laughs] But so we're going to Wausau and the bike fit- Wausau...
• 57:07
and the tickets just went on sale on Eventbrite. And so you can get a ticket, and it's two days, and there's a bunch of...
• 57:13
There's gonna be a, a ton of riding and a bunch of mountain bike stuff, and it's gonna be freaking awesome. And Wausau is off the hook right now. Yep.
• 57:22
I mean, it's- Wausau is It's like number one small town biking in the country. I used to, I used to say- Some, some, some...
• 57:27
I used to say, like, Duluth was sort of the Chamonix of the Midwest, but with Wausau's, like, ability- Wausau...
• 57:33
with Wausau's ability to do the, um, the, uh, regulate the flow for their, uh, their white water rapids course on the river, um, I, I kinda call it Wausau the new Chamonix. Wausau. Wausau the Chamonix- Wausau...
• 57:48
of the Midwest. And they have great beer up there. Awesome. Okay. Also, I'd like to point out that Dave has brought this up numerous times. The title of the show is Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast.
• 57:59
We'd absolutely love to have the full spectrum of cycling, not just types of cycling, but also people in cycling, and we're obviously a bunch of old white guys, and we'd really like to hear from people out there who are out of our comfort zone, so to speak.
• 58:17
Absolutely. So please call in to that 717-727-2453 at 7:00 PM- Well, come in... Central Standard Time, or come in the shop. Come in the shop- Heckin'- heckin' A... and be part of us. Heckin' A.
• 58:27
We can, we can put a thing on your head and talk into a microphone. It'd be aight. You can- Aight. Or just hover... you can- Hover and judge. No, you can sing into, you can sing into a can.
• 58:36
I'll say what [laughs] I, I, I'll say one- It's tiny music... one last thing. Tonight is the last night in Milwaukee of 100 Days of Biking. Glad I rode my bike- Yeah... on all 100 days.
• 58:45
It's, uh, it's a- I don't think I made it a solid hundo. I might've missed a couple. Missed one or two. What? There's one event. It's Wheelie Wednesday. One or two. It's Wheelie Wednesday tonight.
• 58:54
But for the most part- And then there's one other event, I think, after Wheelie Wednesday, but- I've had a, uh, I've had a compromised Jeep for the past five- Long time...
• 59:05
five months, so I've been riding my bike this entire- So you, so you have the 100 days. [laughs] Oh, yeah. Right on. Pretty much. Yeah. So. All right, ladies and germs. Thank you. Thank you very much. Uh- All right.
• 59:15
Steel's real. Dance outta here. Steel is real. Do it. Come on out. Feel it. I want him to dance. Pee-wee. Hit the button. Pee-wee. Pee-wee. Pee-wee. Uh-huh. Phil Van Valckenburgh, ladies and gentlemen.
• 59:26
  I'm a loner, not a rebel.
• 59:30
  [upbeat music]
