- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke at the
- 0:08Speaker 1: United Nations yesterday, and in stark contrast to U.S. President
- 0:13Speaker 1: Donald Trump's critical assessment of the U.N. and its purpose,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Carney argues a multilateral approach to global challenges is necessary.
- 0:22Speaker 1: The United Nations was formed after the Second World War
- 0:25Speaker 1: to bring countries together to find solutions to common problems
- 0:29Speaker 1: facing humanity. Kearney says if a multilateral system fails to
- 0:33Speaker 1: reflect the realities of the time, it won't stand the
- 0:36Speaker 1: test of that time. However, the need for multilateral cooperation
- 0:41Speaker 1: is very much alive.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Climate emergency is intensifying, AI advancing faster than our capacity
- 0:47Speaker 2: to control it, pandemics spreading across continents in weeks. Financial
- 0:52Speaker 2: shocks can disrupt markets and economies in hours. Armed conflicts
- 0:57Speaker 2: destabilizing entire regions, forcing millions to flee from their homes.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Global checkpoints paralyzing supply chains. And no country, no one country, country,
- 1:07Speaker 2: no matter how powerful, can manage these challenges alone.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Dalhousie University political scientist Laurie Turnbull says the prime minister
- 1:14Speaker 1: has a lot of experience internationally, having served as the
- 1:18Speaker 1: governor of the Bank of England for years. Despite his
- 1:21Speaker 1: profile on the world stage, Turnbull says Carney's attendance in
- 1:25Speaker 1: the House of Commons is low and he has some
- 1:27Speaker 1: challenges ahead here at home.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Even with the Building Canada Strong Act that they introduced
- 1:32Speaker 3: this Monday, all kinds of stuff in there is going
- 1:35Speaker 3: to hit the wall, right? Like there's even if the
- 1:37Speaker 3: bill goes through and I suspect it will in the
- 1:39Speaker 3: end but there's difficult pieces in there for some folks
- 1:42Speaker 3: right like the the whole piece around the minister being
- 1:45Speaker 3: able to bring a strike kind of take a stronger
- 1:47Speaker 3: action with respect to strike action on for federally regulated
- 1:51Speaker 3: workers like we have a constitutional right to collective bargaining
- 1:53Speaker 3: in Canada that's something that's going to have to be
- 1:55Speaker 3: worked out I think in the bill and questions will
- 1:59Speaker 3: come at the government on this one.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Both RNC and RCMP are urging people to call them
- 2:05Speaker 1: directly if they are aware of criminal activity. In recent years,
- 2:10Speaker 1: the tendency to post images and video to social media
- 2:13Speaker 1: has taken off, yet in some cases, a formal complaint
- 2:17Speaker 1: is never received by police. Law enforcement can't investigate what
- 2:21Speaker 1: they have not been notified about, and posting to social
- 2:24Speaker 1: media does not automatically prompt an investigation. RNC Constable Steph
- 2:29Speaker 1: Meyer says if you witness or are aware of criminal activity,
- 2:33Speaker 1: report it directly to police. The sooner, the better.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Certainly call us or report it.
- 2:40Speaker 1: We cannot help people if we don't know what's going
- 2:43Speaker 1: on in our communities, and we rely heavily on the
- 2:45Speaker 1: public to know what's happening and how to respond. English
- 2:50Speaker 1: actor and producer Robert Pattinson says he's amazed a dramatization
- 2:54Speaker 1: of Dateline NBC's To Catch a Predator hasn't already been made.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Pattinson stars in Primetime, a movie that explores the controversial
- 3:02Speaker 1: sting operation that led to the show's cancellation. Chris Hansen,
- 3:06Speaker 1: the show's host during its run from 2004 to 2007,
- 3:09Speaker 1: has objected to the film, which he hadn't seen, calling
- 3:13Speaker 1: it an insult. To Catch a Predator arrives in theaters tomorrow.
- 3:18Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
