- 0:07Speaker 1: Spencer Newhart can't ride a bike and fish at the
- 0:10Speaker 1: same time. Testicle Jerky news our shyris Moose going away,
- 0:15Speaker 1: but not in the way you think. Poachers get serious
- 0:19Speaker 1: in North Dakota and Max gets serious about reporting on
- 0:22Speaker 1: those poachers. Spencer Newhart stops to tell the flowers get it.
- 0:28Speaker 2: We'll see if we get it.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Nate Mason has a report on TSS and more. But
- 0:34Speaker 1: first the more Aeel.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Let's hear it.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Okay, this is the our news. Listen to this. We
- 0:45Speaker 1: were down in the We went to the Bahamas for
- 0:47Speaker 1: spring break. Folks who watch the show, we filmed episode
- 0:51Speaker 1: sometime ago with Cameron kirk Connell and Cameron kirk connell.
- 0:55Speaker 1: If you're such a listener that you listen to our
- 0:58Speaker 1: Close Calls story stories the Close Call series, there's a
- 1:03Speaker 1: Close Calls where a guy, a spearfisherman, shoots another spearfisherman
- 1:08Speaker 1: in the fin who's passed out. He's blacked out, shallow water, blackout,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and he's sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Camer
- 1:15Speaker 1: Kirkconnell is able to get close enough to him. He's
- 1:18Speaker 1: on his way up and he sees his buddy's sinking dying,
- 1:22Speaker 1: and he shoots him in the fin with his spear
- 1:23Speaker 1: gun and then they were able to hoist him up
- 1:26Speaker 1: as they resuscitate him and save his life. Wow, we're
- 1:30Speaker 1: with him and his family, my family, his family in
- 1:32Speaker 1: the Bahamas spearfishing, and we're primarily hole hunting. Like you
- 1:37Speaker 1: go down there, you just kind of go over the reefs.
- 1:40Speaker 1: You kick or drift in the current over the reefs,
- 1:43Speaker 1: and now and then you'll catch a hog fish out
- 1:45Speaker 1: doing his business. But you spook a lot of groupers.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And when you spook a grouper, you just follow them,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and that group is gonna move and move, and he'll
- 1:53Speaker 1: go into a hole, but he won't like it and
- 1:55Speaker 1: he'll leave the hole. He'll try another hole. He'll go
- 1:58Speaker 1: into a hole in the little group will come out
- 2:00Speaker 1: of the hole. Then he'll come out of the hole,
- 2:02Speaker 1: and eventually you follow and follow and follow him and
- 2:04Speaker 1: he'll find a hole and they'll hole up and you
- 2:07Speaker 1: hover over the hole until you're like, he's in that hole,
- 2:12Speaker 1: and then you start hole hunting them and it could
- 2:14Speaker 1: turn into chasing them into a hole is one thing.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Killing them is a whole other thing. And then getting
- 2:22Speaker 1: them back out of the holes the whole other thing.
- 2:23Speaker 1: So it turns into like a real it could turn
- 2:26Speaker 1: into a real fistfight. So my kid goes down. We
- 2:32Speaker 1: get a big black grouper in a hole. My kid
- 2:35Speaker 1: goes down and uh, it was a thirty pound grouper.
- 2:38Speaker 1: My kid goes down and like glances it in the
- 2:40Speaker 1: head but doesn't like wings it in the head, but
- 2:43Speaker 1: doesn't even hurt it. Cam's kid goes down and gets
- 2:48Speaker 1: at the tail. It's fighting around, and Alston and I
- 2:52Speaker 1: go down to try to get it out, but the
- 2:54Speaker 1: spear shaft has pulled free of the grouper's tail. The
- 2:59Speaker 1: grouper comes out of that hole and goes into a
- 3:02Speaker 1: new hole. Cam's down with this flashlight trying to look
- 3:06Speaker 1: around and find them. In this nude It's like some
- 3:10Speaker 1: of these things are like Tora Bora. I don't know
- 3:11Speaker 1: if you remember back to that the war in Afghanistan.
- 3:14Speaker 1: They're like the Bora Cave complex. You're appreciating, Oh yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 1: Nate Mason's appreciating Oh Joined today by Max Barta, Nate Mason,
- 3:22Speaker 1: Crinch Nighters here, Spencer new Heart, Brody Henderson. So he's
- 3:28Speaker 1: down looking around with his light, and I see he's
- 3:32Speaker 1: like looking into one hole and it says Tora bora complex.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And some of these holes have chimneys in them, and
- 3:38Speaker 1: you can sometimes you get him into a hole and
- 3:40Speaker 1: you'll sometimes peer into a chimney and locate them. He's
- 3:45Speaker 1: got his head and he's to his waste in a
- 3:48Speaker 1: hole looking around. It's thirty feet of water. So I'm
- 3:52Speaker 1: on the surface and I see a morey eel, the
- 3:54Speaker 1: likes of which I mean like this eel just keeps
- 3:59Speaker 1: coming and coming and coming. And he because he knows
- 4:02Speaker 1: that the troubles are bruin, they're like sharks, like.
- 4:05Speaker 2: He knows a big one though, Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 1: He knows what's up. How big? How big? Yeah, probably
- 4:12Speaker 1: six feet long, big around as your big around as
- 4:15Speaker 1: your thigh, I mean, like a enough of a one.
- 4:20Speaker 1: He comes and all a sudden he enters the same
- 4:23Speaker 1: not the same entrance that Cam's in, but another entrance
- 4:26Speaker 1: to the same hole. My boy dives down to alert
- 4:30Speaker 1: him because they'll bite you. And as my boy's descending
- 4:36Speaker 1: to alert him, Cam's coming up. But I can tell
- 4:39Speaker 1: by his body language. He doesn't know. He didn't encounter
- 4:43Speaker 1: the eel. He's coming up casually. Okay, he comes up casual, like,
- 4:48Speaker 1: oh my god, dude, I thought you could get bit
- 4:50Speaker 1: in the face. That big eel went into the cave
- 4:53Speaker 1: complex he have it. I don't know. I'm just hanging around,
- 4:58Speaker 1: like I don't you know. This guy's the master, he's,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you know, one of the one of the Like this
- 5:04Speaker 1: is gonna sound like like he's among the top handful
- 5:08Speaker 1: of spear fishermen that there are. Okay, So he's like, oh,
- 5:15Speaker 1: he's in the hole, and he says that grouper's coming out,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and we're just hovering there, and a while later, here
- 5:22Speaker 1: comes a crab out of that hole. It doesn't like
- 5:25Speaker 1: being in that hole. And my boy goes down and
- 5:28Speaker 1: gets the crab, and we waited a while and waited awhile,
- 5:31Speaker 1: and sure enough that here comes that group are out
- 5:33Speaker 1: substantially more wounded, like was getting mauled, was getting mauled
- 5:39Speaker 1: in the hole mm hmm by the eel. Wow. And
- 5:45Speaker 1: he's not in a good he's not in a good place.
- 5:47Speaker 4: An that thing was just down there taking chunks out.
- 5:53Speaker 1: So then we went down and shot. Then we went
- 5:54Speaker 1: and shot the grouper for real. Then he went into
- 5:57Speaker 1: another hole and then I was able to wrestle him
- 5:59Speaker 1: out of that, but he was not Camp just Cam said,
- 6:02Speaker 1: just like instantly, he's like, oh he's coming out.
- 6:06Speaker 5: You know how you got like bird dogs, you need
- 6:08Speaker 5: like group of eels?
- 6:09Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, if you got to eel in your
- 6:15Speaker 1: pocket and that grouper goes into that network and he just.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't. Can you spear more?
- 6:24Speaker 2: Al? I don't know.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I've seen you talk to people that have done it.
- 6:28Speaker 1: You got your hands full when you do that. I've
- 6:31Speaker 1: been told I can't even imagine what would be like
- 6:35Speaker 1: to have Cam said in a in an extreme situation
- 6:41Speaker 1: because Bahamas' pole spear only you can't use a spear gun,
- 6:44Speaker 1: so it's all polespes but slip tips on him like
- 6:47Speaker 1: a harpoon head, a detachable head. He said, if you
- 6:51Speaker 1: had to and you were protecting yourself, you might, but
- 6:57Speaker 1: you're just probably just gonna forget about your spear, like
- 7:01Speaker 1: you're not going to get it. Yeah, and this thing,
- 7:03Speaker 1: I mean, no, I've been bit by those suckers. They
- 7:07Speaker 1: hurt how the group of taste I ate that particular grouper.
- 7:11Speaker 1: But did you eat a group of flat It was
- 7:15Speaker 1: kind of missing a chunk on the tail. Yeah, the mauled.
- 7:18Speaker 4: And they see where it was messed up.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You enjoyed it? Oh?
- 7:23Speaker 4: Yes, that thing had the like dark cutter equivalent end
- 7:27Speaker 4: of life.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I don't think that works on fish.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Wildly stress because a stressed.
- 7:35Speaker 1: But he had a Yeah, he had a good we
- 7:37Speaker 1: we we messed with that fish for probably forty five minutes.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Damn wouldn't adventure.
- 7:42Speaker 1: They turned in some wrestling matches. Man, Uh, all right,
- 7:45Speaker 1: you did? You did a bicycle trip spencer.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been I've been working on planning this for
- 7:50Speaker 4: like a month, just getting my my gear ready for it.
- 7:53Speaker 4: I was going to bike and fly fish at the
- 7:54Speaker 4: same time. The fly fishing was no good though. I
- 7:58Speaker 4: was in Yellowstone National Park this time of year. Ninety
- 8:01Speaker 4: five percent of their water is closed to angling.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Why was that purposes or no?
- 8:07Speaker 4: I think to protect some native spawners, just to like
- 8:10Speaker 4: in general, give fish a break down there. I don't
- 8:13Speaker 4: think it's uncommon even in like Montana on non national park.
- 8:16Speaker 1: What is there like an opening day or something?
- 8:18Speaker 4: There is an opening day YEP, that comes around in May,
- 8:22Speaker 4: I think for most of the water, but other parts
- 8:24Speaker 4: have different openers. Anyway, it's only five percent of water
- 8:27Speaker 4: is open right now. So I was going to bike
- 8:28Speaker 4: into there as well as like probably eighty percent of
- 8:31Speaker 4: their roads were closed as well. So missus Newhart, come
- 8:34Speaker 4: with you, No no solo me, Me and a buddy
- 8:37Speaker 4: from town here was fixing the bike, and I never
- 8:43Speaker 4: got a you don't like yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I like to say no. I like to be able
- 8:49Speaker 1: to see next time next I like to be able
- 8:52Speaker 1: to say no.
- 8:54Speaker 4: So I I biked in started fishing. The fishing was
- 8:58Speaker 4: no good. Run off as started a little early this year,
- 9:00Speaker 4: and that like five percent of water that I could
- 9:03Speaker 4: fish it was just too dirty, too terrible, couldn't couldn't
- 9:07Speaker 4: turn up any fish had won.
- 9:08Speaker 1: When you pitched this segment, I think Brody pitched on
- 9:11Speaker 1: Your Behalf, well, it was it was in anticipation of
- 9:15Speaker 1: all the fish you're going to catch.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Oh yeah, man, it was gonna be good. I was
- 9:19Speaker 4: gonna get Yeah. I was going to be so distracted
- 9:22Speaker 4: with fishing that it was just going to be a
- 9:23Speaker 4: fishing trip. It wasn't gonna be a bike trip anymore.
- 9:26Speaker 4: The other thing happened. The fishing was so bad that
- 9:28Speaker 4: it was just a bike trip. So I ended up
- 9:29Speaker 4: biking forty eight miles oh Yellowstone this weekend. You know,
- 9:33Speaker 4: I could probably spend four hours fishing with no fish caught,
- 9:36Speaker 4: not a nibble. There was a nibble. I had a
- 9:39Speaker 4: trout offer at a streamer, had him on for probably
- 9:41Speaker 4: one and a half seconds, and there was gone long
- 9:43Speaker 4: distance release, long distance release, and couldn't couldn't even identify
- 9:47Speaker 4: you see anything crazy crazy, no bice, I mean, what
- 9:52Speaker 4: you'd expect to see in Yellowstone.
- 9:53Speaker 2: No dead no dead critters, laying dead critters.
- 9:56Speaker 6: No.
- 9:57Speaker 4: I was ready for bears, though they had bears show
- 9:59Speaker 4: up earlier this year, five days sooner.
- 10:01Speaker 1: My neighbor just had one in his garbage. Couldn't believe
- 10:03Speaker 1: it already.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Bison, elk kyo, muskrat, just some standard Ye saw some scratch?
- 10:09Speaker 4: Did you one one? And we got a good view
- 10:12Speaker 4: to him because I was on a bridge looking down him.
- 10:14Speaker 4: I've never seen him do this before, but at one
- 10:16Speaker 4: point he spent probably like thirty seconds, he just gave
- 10:20Speaker 4: himself to the current and floated down the current, and
- 10:23Speaker 4: he looked like he was totally careless and then he
- 10:25Speaker 4: dove under.
- 10:26Speaker 3: After that, I heard the.
- 10:27Speaker 2: River the trappings.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Real good, we do great, I bet you do.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Okay, we have a story coming up on something about that.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Oh we stack him up down there, man, as we
- 10:37Speaker 1: aus no one else hits it.
- 10:39Speaker 4: It's good.
- 10:40Speaker 1: You never figure out what's going on the season.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Something wrong?
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Spencer tell us about hunt giveaway man, Well,
- 10:48Speaker 1: is that your job? We at my job?
- 10:51Speaker 4: You you do that one. Oh, I'll cover the next one.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Oh that's right, all right, uh right now Turkey Week.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Turkey Week is on now at the meet either start
- 11:01Speaker 1: so help you get ready to spring. We've rounded up
- 11:03Speaker 1: some of our favorite gear for chasing gobblers, whether you're
- 11:06Speaker 1: chasing them myriams or them them hard goblin Easterns. I
- 11:12Speaker 1: heard one ripped the other day from my house in Yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 7: I told you they were going, and then we had
- 11:17Speaker 7: bad weather and they just look sad and like there's
- 11:20Speaker 7: nothing worse looking than a wet sorry looking.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Just before anyone gets excited about coming hunting by my house,
- 11:27Speaker 1: I'll save you the hassle. It's not a hunting area, yeah,
- 11:29Speaker 1: but it does get town. It gets like town birds
- 11:32Speaker 1: bears too. Yeah, because town bears town birds. Anyways, I'm
- 11:36Speaker 1: out there, nice, perfectly nice morning up the hill, up
- 11:40Speaker 1: the hill there, and I called my neighbor. I'm like,
- 11:45Speaker 1: sons of bitches are gobbling early.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Did you call back to that bird at all?
- 11:48Speaker 1: No? I ran in to call my neighbor. I don't
- 11:51Speaker 1: know why. I'm like, they're gobbling early, dammit.
- 11:54Speaker 3: He said, we gotta go quicker.
- 11:57Speaker 1: And then it snowed ye and then I'm like, this
- 11:59Speaker 1: is gonna not to gobble right out of them.
- 12:02Speaker 3: There's a good amount of birds up there. Yeah.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Uh, what was I saying? Oh, Turkey Week, we got
- 12:09Speaker 1: brand new meat eater logowear, logo wear and seasonings. Turkey
- 12:13Speaker 1: calls from Phelps game calls. I'm holding them the prime
- 12:18Speaker 1: cuts pack right here, signature Yanni, so it's it's clay
- 12:23Speaker 1: from top to bottom. It's Steve signature cut, which isn't
- 12:28Speaker 1: in there because of minds. Right here, the Yanni and
- 12:31Speaker 1: the clay. So from bottom to top, it's best caller,
- 12:34Speaker 1: second best caller, worst caller, right, That's what I think
- 12:38Speaker 1: about it. But think about it like this. My cut
- 12:41Speaker 1: is meant for dudes who just want to make good
- 12:44Speaker 1: turkey sounds and They're not like going to be out
- 12:46Speaker 1: of competition because it's just an easy, low pressure cut.
- 12:51Speaker 1: You know what I'm talking about. Yeah, it's a low
- 12:54Speaker 1: pressure cut.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Did they stop making the jake break?
- 12:58Speaker 1: I don't know if they still that was a little
- 12:59Speaker 1: that's a little pressure cut. It's like, it's like easy, it's easy.
- 13:03Speaker 1: My cut makes it easy to be not to be
- 13:07Speaker 1: a novice diaphragm caller and get where you're making some
- 13:11Speaker 1: sounds because you don't have to have so much ugh
- 13:15Speaker 1: and you don't have it's just easy to use call.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Phil Robertson always said that a live Mallard would not
- 13:20Speaker 4: win a duck calling contest. That's what you people's Yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 4: he's not looking to win a turkey calling contest.
- 13:27Speaker 1: No. I kill. I kill a lot of turkeys, But
- 13:29Speaker 1: I would never win a turkey calling contest here. But
- 13:31Speaker 1: I but I think of the calling as being like
- 13:34Speaker 1: a part of a whole bunch of other parts.
- 13:36Speaker 3: I want to ask to try it out, but I
- 13:38Speaker 3: know where it's been.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Yep, where was I Campbell from First Light, decoys from

- 14:47Speaker 4: is a photo contest regarding uncommon turkey colors. The article
- 14:52Speaker 4: is called odd Turkey Plumage photo contests where you can
- 14:55Speaker 4: enter a picture of the rare turkeys that you've seen
- 14:58Speaker 4: or killed. This is supporting the work that doctor Mike
- 15:01Speaker 4: Chamberlain is doing with the Wild Turkey Lab to do
- 15:04Speaker 4: research on wild turkey DNA, genetic diversity, inbreeding, potential gene
- 15:09Speaker 4: flow and hybridization. The Wild Turkey Lab wants you to
- 15:13Speaker 4: send genetic samples of your turkey's tongue, but our Turkey
- 15:16Speaker 4: Plumage contest is just for photos. You can go enter
- 15:20Speaker 4: them on our website and there are only two entries
- 15:23Speaker 4: so far. You have until April six to enter the contests.
- 15:28Speaker 4: There's three top prize because.
- 15:29Speaker 1: You got to shoot a weird colored turkey.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Or CE one or C one and there's three prizes.
- 15:35Speaker 4: We're giving away all sorts of really good gears. So
- 15:38Speaker 4: if you if you have a photo of a cool
- 15:40Speaker 4: turkey you've killed or seen, you should go.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Enter it now.
- 15:42Speaker 4: If I was entering it, here's what I would submit.
- 15:45Speaker 4: This was a turkey I saw in twenty fourteen. I
- 15:48Speaker 4: was leaving work heading to class and this was at
- 15:50Speaker 4: a go kart track and this turkey was hanging around.
- 15:54Speaker 1: I turned out a domestic vibe to it.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Well.
- 15:57Speaker 4: So this area has some colonies that are known for
- 16:01Speaker 4: their large turkey populations, so this could have been one
- 16:05Speaker 4: that had like crossed with a domestic or colonies like
- 16:09Speaker 4: a Hood Orwight colony. They raised a lot of domestic turkeys,
- 16:13Speaker 4: and so guys will talk about if you want to
- 16:15Speaker 4: kill a smoke faced turkey, you go hunting, you the colony.
- 16:19Speaker 1: This is a good question for Chamberlain when I people
- 16:22Speaker 1: are always sending me these uh huh. So far two
- 16:24Speaker 1: people this spring have sent me the smoke turkey smoke phase.
- 16:28Speaker 4: It's the most common of the uncommon plumage.
- 16:31Speaker 1: What I see when I'm seeing that, and I'm open
- 16:33Speaker 1: to corrections, and you might win yourself a prize. What
- 16:36Speaker 1: I see when I'm seeing that is domestic introgression. Sure,
- 16:41Speaker 1: there he goes again. Whenever you say, Steve Spencer, it
- 16:45Speaker 1: hit me last night what you're telling Spencer stuff. He'll
- 16:50Speaker 1: sometimes say sure, and I was like, there's something about it,
- 16:54Speaker 1: and Brody says, it's the same thing as going whatever
- 16:57Speaker 1: you say, Buddy.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Is trying to be a good active listener, tell you
- 17:02Speaker 4: that I'm here, and I was like, that's.
- 17:04Speaker 1: It, Brody, hit it. It's it's whatever you say, sure, sure, yeah,
- 17:08Speaker 1: whatever you say. Sometimes it's ones. Sometimes it's like whatever
- 17:14Speaker 1: you say, Buddy, so.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Go atter that contest. The medeater dot Com show Steve
- 17:19Speaker 4: all of your smoke faced turkeys.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Yep, and I'll say to you, looks like domestic intro aggression.
- 17:26Speaker 1: But there's got to be something to it. And I'm
- 17:27Speaker 1: sure we'll ask Chamberlain. We'll ask Mike Chamberlain if we
- 17:30Speaker 1: need to.
- 17:31Speaker 7: Uh.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Max came to me there to day and said, hey, well,
- 17:36Speaker 1: first off, we have a pond. We have our office
- 17:37Speaker 1: has a pond.
- 17:38Speaker 3: You have a couple of ponds.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Yeah, we're on a little it's like a I don't
- 17:42Speaker 1: even call it, like a campuses. Yeah, we're like in
- 17:45Speaker 1: a campus. There's a there's a there's a little ditch
- 17:47Speaker 1: that comes through it, and there's a couple dredged out ponds.
- 17:50Speaker 1: And Brody estimates the trout population at four many. Brody
- 17:55Speaker 1: believe her to be four to five trout and one
- 17:59Speaker 1: muskrat is in our last night there was two geese
- 18:01Speaker 1: in it.
- 18:02Speaker 4: We should start tagging the.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Floating on that north pond.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, because it's dead coon in air, the shoe geese.
- 18:09Speaker 1: There is a Pairmallard.
- 18:10Speaker 2: It's like a bona fide farm pond.
- 18:13Speaker 4: There's no garbage because we cleaned it out.
- 18:15Speaker 1: There's a new piece of garbage I was looking at
- 18:16Speaker 1: at first, I thought it was something floating dead, and
- 18:18Speaker 1: I realized it's new garbage. We got to do a
- 18:21Speaker 1: new cleanup because there's new garbage in the pond. It
- 18:23Speaker 1: keeps moving back and forth from side to side. Max said, Hey,
- 18:27Speaker 1: who do I gotta ask to put a nesting box
- 18:31Speaker 1: on the pond? And I said, I don't know, but yes,
- 18:36Speaker 1: so talk about that Max.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Yeah, so we're trying to raise some ducks this year
- 18:43Speaker 3: this spring Delta Waterfall came up with these houses they're
- 18:49Speaker 3: called henhouses, where it's just a wire cylinder basically on
- 18:54Speaker 3: a pole over the water. And the reason why they
- 18:58Speaker 3: came up.
- 18:58Speaker 1: With these that's a tea post right, yeah.
- 19:00Speaker 3: And the reason why they came up with these was
- 19:04Speaker 3: due to habitat change and predator increases, nests success dropped,
- 19:09Speaker 3: and so they thought, oh, why don't we put something
- 19:12Speaker 3: above the water that these nest predators can't get to,
- 19:15Speaker 3: And so they came up with this henhouse back in
- 19:18Speaker 3: like the nineteen nineties. I think they've been around for
- 19:20Speaker 3: like three five years.
- 19:21Speaker 1: That's that old design. Yeah, Because you don't have to
- 19:23Speaker 1: be like a crack commando raccoon to get yourself up
- 19:26Speaker 1: that team post.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it would be like it would be
- 19:29Speaker 3: like a squirrel climbing up a bird feeder almost, but
- 19:31Speaker 3: it's like a really skinny pole. Yeah yeah in water, Yeah,
- 19:35Speaker 3: in water. And so these were designed specifically for mallards.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Is that right? Yeah? What makes them that way?
- 19:44Speaker 3: I guess I don't have an answer for.
- 19:45Speaker 1: That, but it fits what they like.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Yeah, So cont like people think that mallard's nest like
- 19:54Speaker 3: or ducks nest in water, but they actually nest away
- 19:57Speaker 3: from the water and then they hatch their duckling and
- 20:00Speaker 3: walk to the water. But these henhouses put them right
- 20:04Speaker 3: over the water. So those duck lands the first thing
- 20:06Speaker 3: they do, they're right in the water. They don't have
- 20:08Speaker 3: no traveling to do, no predators can get them. And
- 20:11Speaker 3: so I think I researched some stats here, and sixty
- 20:20Speaker 3: higher in a henhouse than just a regular nest. Yeah,
- 20:25Speaker 3: successful nests. So yeah, a hen can start using one
- 20:29Speaker 3: of these and have a twelve twelve times better odds
- 20:33Speaker 3: as rather than nesting in just the ground.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Is that someone been poking around back?
- 20:39Speaker 3: I looked every single morning.
- 20:40Speaker 4: What are the odds you think a blackbird just makes
- 20:43Speaker 4: a nest in there instead?
- 20:44Speaker 3: That's a great question. I hope it doesn't, I'll shoot
- 20:47Speaker 3: it out of there.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I haven't seen any red wing blackbirds down there.
- 20:50Speaker 7: I've seen Canada geese nest in an elevated platform, some
- 20:55Speaker 7: phone poles.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, but yeah, this is just like a wire
- 20:58Speaker 3: cylinder and so like it's a perfect size for a
- 21:00Speaker 3: duck to get in there. And that's it, Mai. It's
- 21:06Speaker 3: already filled with straw grass. And that's another thing too.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Mallards don't bring any kind of nest material to their nest. Yeah,
- 21:18Speaker 3: So like a robin or like a bald eagle, they'll
- 21:20Speaker 3: go around collecting sticks and like build a nest. A
- 21:23Speaker 3: mallard will just like sit there and like peck around
- 21:26Speaker 3: and like.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess like not because I was saying I
- 21:29Speaker 1: stumble into him hunting morel I never thought about that.
- 21:33Speaker 1: They're not supplementing it. It's just in a little dish
- 21:36Speaker 1: and leaves.
- 21:38Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm hoping we can raise a some ducklings
- 21:44Speaker 3: and be great if.
- 21:46Speaker 1: The first thing we'll see is we'll see a duck
- 21:48Speaker 1: sitting on top of that thing in it, I thinking
- 21:50Speaker 1: we'll see one's standing. That's gonna be in my mind
- 21:54Speaker 1: the day it happens. It's gonna be someone's gonna see
- 21:57Speaker 1: one standing on it. Yeah, why my little mind movie,
- 22:01Speaker 1: that's what happens.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Sh Well, no, I've well, we could do that. But
- 22:06Speaker 3: if a head mallard ness in there, I'm gonna be
- 22:09Speaker 3: sitting there with the camera for a couple hours each
- 22:11Speaker 3: day and just wait for those ducklings to come out
- 22:14Speaker 3: in there, because I think it would be just an
- 22:16Speaker 3: epic shot of duck lanes just popping out.
- 22:18Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Yeah, well you could push them out, you know, he
- 22:21Speaker 1: could do that.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Swim out there and give that. Do you envision a
- 22:25Speaker 4: local or a migrator?
- 22:27Speaker 3: Probably a local for sure. Yeah, there's like a group.
- 22:30Speaker 3: I mean, I wouldn't say a group, but there's probably
- 22:32Speaker 3: like five to six pairs on our ponds right now,
- 22:36Speaker 3: and so I'm hoping one of those hops in there.
- 22:40Speaker 1: So that's great.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I can't.
- 22:42Speaker 4: See's got the ba if you were ducks Max, that's great.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:47Speaker 3: People can look at adult Waterfall dot org to find
- 22:50Speaker 3: out more about these hein houses. Then there's different programs
- 22:53Speaker 3: where you can donate some money and I'll actually like
- 22:56Speaker 3: get henhouses.
- 22:57Speaker 1: See that's what it's telling you. I want a couple,
- 22:59Speaker 1: I know, just wrong to put my.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Well, I know a guy, my buddy, Garrett Humphrey, who
- 23:03Speaker 3: helps out with the local chapter here in Bozeman. He's
- 23:07Speaker 3: got a pile of them, so yep, I'd like to
- 23:09Speaker 3: do that. Yeah, we'll get just where to put them.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Okay, it's time for corrections. Corrections, corrections, Okay, uh corrections today.
- 23:21Speaker 1: The winner of today's corrections wins the setup to COB's boots.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I'm holding one up right here, But you can pick
- 23:27Speaker 1: what everyone's you want these maybe miss Sess been out
- 23:29Speaker 1: on paternity leave.
- 23:31Speaker 3: What size or those.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Ten and a half? Ten and a half. I'm just
- 23:35Speaker 1: guessing sesspen out on paternityly but he wears he wears
- 23:39Speaker 1: a square toe. Every time I touch this, I feel
- 23:41Speaker 1: like I'm touching sets foot. You can pick what you want.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I'm telling you what though, dude, just the leather smells
- 23:51Speaker 1: like brand new leather. Go pick out and eat to
- 23:52Speaker 1: covid as you want if you win the corrections. Now,
- 23:55Speaker 1: we had to do something a little bit different. So, oh,
- 23:57Speaker 1: Nate Mason's here. Nate Mason came up with this joke
- 24:00Speaker 1: a little late, but he came up with it never.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Yeah, shit kickers for nitpickers.
- 24:06Speaker 1: The most genius thing I've heard all week. Shit kickers
- 24:08Speaker 1: from nitpickers. Uh. But here's the deal. So many corrections
- 24:14Speaker 1: came in about TSS. Brody's who did you do TSS report?
- 24:19Speaker 1: A lot of people fired up about TSS. And don't
- 24:21Speaker 1: worry because we're going to talk a lot about TSS
- 24:24Speaker 1: today in the news segment here. So we're gonna do
- 24:27Speaker 1: a quick showdown. Of course, when in order to win
- 24:31Speaker 1: the boots, there's three corrections. But we're doing like a
- 24:34Speaker 1: deal this week. We got to do a competition to
- 24:38Speaker 1: enter the competition, so very quickly, three TSS. The winner
- 24:42Speaker 1: of this goes to the finals. No March madness like golf. No,
- 24:47Speaker 1: it's like March madness.
- 24:49Speaker 7: This next round here, this first TSS round of corrections.
- 24:54Speaker 2: These are some nit pickers man.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Okay, ship kickers for nickers. Okay, So for a spot
- 25:02Speaker 1: in the finals. TSS correction one. My name is Ian
- 25:10Speaker 1: up where's my glass? And I'm from Upstate New York.
- 25:14Speaker 1: While listening to episode eight five three, and you were
- 25:16Speaker 1: talking about TSS, ammo and we're not totally sure on
- 25:19Speaker 1: when they were introduced, and again a clarification, an omission a,
- 25:27Speaker 1: that's corrections. Sure, he says, twenty eighteen, Federal Premium became
- 25:32Speaker 1: the first large manufacturer to produce TSS great twenty eighteen,
- 25:37Speaker 1: thank you, TSS two slight correction to the claim. I
- 25:43Speaker 1: believe it was Brody's claim that tungsten is very heat resistant. Well,
- 25:52Speaker 1: he goes out. The corrector says, tungsten is actually the
- 25:56Speaker 1: most heat resistant pure metals. All. Yeah, No, very huge difference.
- 26:09Speaker 1: If I say the tallest man on Earth and he
- 26:15Speaker 1: comes in, and I go, this is my buddy. He's
- 26:17Speaker 1: very tall, right, and someone's like, well, he's the tallest
- 26:22Speaker 1: man on Earth. I think it's just no, it's different.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I would say, here's my buddy, he's the tallest man
- 26:30Speaker 1: on earth. Okay, it's just different.
- 26:35Speaker 9: There are a lot more men than there are kinds
- 26:36Speaker 9: of metal.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Okay, the melting's going to get a correction. The melting
- 26:44Speaker 1: get this, get just close your eyes and picture this.
- 26:47Speaker 1: The melting point is six thousand ninety two fahrenheit seven
- 26:52Speaker 1: hundred degrees higher. What's the handle them?
- 26:57Speaker 2: What's the temperature of the sun?
- 26:58Speaker 1: A lot. I go so far as to say it's
- 27:02Speaker 1: the hottest thing.
- 27:07Speaker 2: It wouldn't survive the sun.
- 27:11Speaker 1: That's why it's used as an electrode. When tig welding,
- 27:14Speaker 1: which was introduced in the nineteen forties, he goes down
- 27:17Speaker 1: to say very heat resistant.
- 27:19Speaker 7: Ha, it actually says very heat resistant is not an
- 27:25Speaker 7: incorrect claim.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Oh, that's what it says.
- 27:30Speaker 5: It doesn't do the metal justice.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Okay, So Brody under selling tungsten. Oh yeah, TSS number three.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Next, I oversell.
- 27:38Speaker 1: It, bro TSS number three, He starts out. I appreciate this.
- 27:47Speaker 1: He starts out, says I don't have the credit or
- 27:49Speaker 1: the credentials to offer this correction. He says, in fact,
- 27:52Speaker 1: I'm horrible as science related subjects. But that just goes
- 27:55Speaker 1: to show that any person can do good. Regular Joe, Yeah,
- 27:58Speaker 1: but Brody can't do good.
- 27:59Speaker 2: No.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Yeah, this guy says, I have a forty year old
- 28:05Speaker 1: Why does that matter?
- 28:07Speaker 5: Like a cousin who's maybe.
- 28:08Speaker 7: Maybe he's very young, and he's trying to establish bona
- 28:12Speaker 7: fides because his cousin is old.
- 28:14Speaker 4: Well, he's going to tell you about a Christmas thing.
- 28:16Speaker 1: You know, his cousin's forty. I don't care. You know
- 28:21Speaker 1: what it could be that he's like, we've been cousin
- 28:23Speaker 1: so long, you know, I don't think that's it. Okay,
- 28:30Speaker 1: he's got a forty year old cousin to ask for this.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Cousin asked for Christmas. Oh, I get it now. What
- 28:38Speaker 1: kind of four year.
- 28:38Speaker 9: Old guy six year would ask?
- 28:41Speaker 1: Okay, that's why it's goofy. His goofy forty year old
- 28:44Speaker 1: cousin requested a one by one inch piece of tungsten.
- 28:51Speaker 1: This guy says it is heavy. He says it's so heavy.
- 28:58Speaker 1: They talk about that it like it has its own
- 29:00Speaker 1: gravitational pull, which it does. But he's not a science guy. Yes,
- 29:07Speaker 1: you're right, that is gravity pulling on your cube. He
- 29:13Speaker 1: goes down with this correction. When Brody last week said
- 29:16Speaker 1: that TSS is twice as dense as lead, I kept thinking,
- 29:23Speaker 1: there's no way.
- 29:25Speaker 7: I would like the true because I think I said
- 29:28Speaker 7: about twice, but.
- 29:31Speaker 1: You said twice. Because he says there's no way, because
- 29:34Speaker 1: I've held a two point two pound cube of tungsten,
- 29:40Speaker 1: and in fact Brody was wrong. Tungsten isn't twice as heavy.
- 29:45Speaker 1: It's one point time. One point seven times is dense.
- 29:50Speaker 2: And math that's a long ways, I guess.
- 29:52Speaker 1: He says, I know this is splitting hairs, but if
- 29:55Speaker 1: it was two x, then it would be the here's
- 29:57Speaker 1: where it rubber hits the road. It this is where
- 30:00Speaker 1: gets mean. No, if it was two x as Brody claimed,
- 30:06Speaker 1: it would be the densest naturally occurring material on Earth.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Why can't we have some of this stuff?
- 30:13Speaker 1: But it's not. It's that is held by osmium, which
- 30:19Speaker 1: is one point nine nine times as dense as led.
- 30:23Speaker 1: So not only was Brody wrong when he said two times,
- 30:28Speaker 1: but the thing that's more dense than it still is
- 30:32Speaker 1: it two times? He was very wrong, very wrong. But
- 30:37Speaker 1: this person pitches the idea of osmium super shot exactly.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I don't know what osmium is going for these days,
- 30:48Speaker 1: but I've never heard of it, which makes me think
- 30:50Speaker 1: it's not his correction though, well, here can you hold it?
- 30:57Speaker 1: Because there's a problem. These guys aren't even in corrections.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Who do we vote for to advance to the finals?
- 31:05Speaker 1: We have Brody being wrong about Brody being wrong about
- 31:11Speaker 1: not knowing when it came out, we have Brody being
- 31:15Speaker 1: wrong about how hot you got to get it to
- 31:17Speaker 1: miss I like the last one, And we have Brody
- 31:20Speaker 1: being wrong about how dense it.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Is the last one because.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Okay, so he's into the finals.
- 31:29Speaker 9: I like his I like his flavor text at the
- 31:31Speaker 9: end about osmium to No.
- 31:32Speaker 1: He did a really good job. And he's the guy
- 31:34Speaker 1: who's not a science guy. Okay, so he's in the finals.
- 31:38Speaker 1: So that is correction number one.
- 31:41Speaker 4: He's going to have to give one of his boots
- 31:43Speaker 4: to his cousin.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Though, who knows. Maybe they I don't know, they only
- 31:54Speaker 1: have one. I don't know, who knows, we kind of
- 31:56Speaker 1: I don't know. Watching a movie the other night and
- 32:01Speaker 1: it was and it was mostly cast with just non actors. Okay,
- 32:06Speaker 1: it's a phenomenal movie. And there was one of the
- 32:10Speaker 1: main characters is missing an arm and one of the
- 32:12Speaker 1: main characters is missing a leg, and I was thinking
- 32:15Speaker 1: to myself, that's such an interesting call. And then I
- 32:19Speaker 1: read that they didn't use professional actors. They just cast
- 32:22Speaker 1: it from people that they saw and introduced themselves to
- 32:26Speaker 1: and cast the movie that way.
- 32:27Speaker 4: You don't want to tell us what it's called.
- 32:29Speaker 1: French movie, it's it's a lot of French, a lot
- 32:32Speaker 1: of Spanish. It's a dude trying to find his daughter
- 32:34Speaker 1: who is vanished into the into the Moroccan desert. Rave
- 32:39Speaker 1: scene and it has mega mad Max overtones and gets
- 32:43Speaker 1: very stressful.
- 32:45Speaker 3: Netflix or No.
- 32:49Speaker 1: I bought it on this I've been every day. I
- 32:52Speaker 1: checked to see if it was available, and became available.
- 32:55Speaker 1: I bought it for a lot of money on Apple
- 32:56Speaker 1: on you know, the iTunes store whatever they call that nowadays,
- 32:59Speaker 1: the Apple Store. Yeah, go on, Brody's going to offer
- 33:02Speaker 1: a correction.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Okay, here we go.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right, Apple TV.
- 33:06Speaker 7: Hopefully you guys were listening a couple of weeks back
- 33:08Speaker 7: when we talked about the Colorado fur Band. We've got
- 33:11Speaker 7: a correction from Jeff. I don't have his last name,
- 33:14Speaker 7: but we'll figure it out if we need to. Okay,
- 33:17Speaker 7: I just listened to the news podcast where you talked
- 33:19Speaker 7: about the Colorado Furband petition voted on by the CPW Commission.
- 33:24Speaker 7: During that bit, Steve remarked that nuisance beaver's and other
- 33:27Speaker 7: fur bears taken for nuisance reasons will now be left
- 33:31Speaker 7: to right with no fur taken. That's actually not true.
- 33:35Speaker 7: That's the insane part of this story that's not being told,
- 33:37Speaker 7: and honestly, I'm not.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Sure if it should be told. I'll let you be
- 33:40Speaker 2: the judge.
- 33:41Speaker 1: I like this because he's saying I messed up, But
- 33:45Speaker 1: it's because it's so insane that it's excusable that I
- 33:47Speaker 1: messed up.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Well, I don't know off the hook.
- 33:51Speaker 7: Okay, when the when the Commission adopts the regulation banning
- 33:56Speaker 7: the sale of wild animal furs in Colorado, it will
- 33:59Speaker 7: only apply to fur bears taken recreationally. Statutes are already
- 34:03Speaker 7: in place that state fur bear is taken for damage
- 34:06Speaker 7: or agricultural purposes can be retained or sold by those
- 34:09Speaker 7: taken those those that have taken that statutes trump regulations.
- 34:16Speaker 7: This is in both Title thirty three and Title thirty
- 34:19Speaker 7: five of the Colorado Revived Statutes.
- 34:21Speaker 2: YadA, YadA.
- 34:23Speaker 7: It is an enforced, unenforceable law, and the Commission was
- 34:26Speaker 7: told as much by CPW law enforcement.
- 34:30Speaker 2: As soon as a bobcat.
- 34:31Speaker 7: Is sealed, there's no way to know if it was
- 34:33Speaker 7: harvested recreationally or through damage purposes. This is the part
- 34:37Speaker 7: that makes me uncomfortable with those for the ban. I
- 34:40Speaker 7: don't want them to know this loophole. Oh, there's any
- 34:44Speaker 7: There isn't any way to find out if any fur
- 34:46Speaker 7: bear was taken for damaged purposes. You can still harvest
- 34:49Speaker 7: fur bears recreationally and nothing says you can't sell them
- 34:53Speaker 7: in another state either. This whole thing is ridiculous and
- 34:57Speaker 7: the commission shame CPW, and this ridiculous prize says, oh.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Because a little thanks to Brody read that party.
- 35:04Speaker 7: I can tell you that CPW is as frustrated with
- 35:07Speaker 7: this as you are, which is this is good job.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Brody has correction number two. So to recap, we got
- 35:13Speaker 1: osmium super shot. Brody screwed up on the fur band.
- 35:19Speaker 9: No, you did, but it's okay.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Here's the last one. This is a good one. This
- 35:26Speaker 1: is an important one. On the most recent news podcast,
- 35:30Speaker 1: Bear Newcomb mentioned that Oklahoma was working toward approving the
- 35:34Speaker 1: release of captive deer that are and Bear used this
- 35:38Speaker 1: word that are immune to CWD into the wild. I
- 35:46Speaker 1: wish I would have caught that. I didn't catch that
- 35:49Speaker 1: very rightfully. The guy says the correct term would be resistant. Okay,
- 35:53Speaker 1: even though that is still in question, and he talks
- 35:57Speaker 1: about how we ourselves covered that episode seven six in
- 36:02Speaker 1: the podcast titled The Truth about Chronic Wasting Disease. Okay, So,
- 36:05Speaker 1: according to the National Deer Association, deer that carry the
- 36:10Speaker 1: nine to six SS genotype could experience a longer incubation
- 36:18Speaker 1: period prior to perishing to the disease, but this does
- 36:22Speaker 1: not prevent them from getting it. So resistant or delayed
- 36:28Speaker 1: but not known to be immune. Okay, so there's the
- 36:31Speaker 1: three things. The Brody being wrong on tungsten, me being
- 36:38Speaker 1: understandably mistaken on the Colorado furband, or Bear Newcom not
- 36:45Speaker 1: choosing his words carefully on chronic wasting disease. This is tough,
- 36:54Speaker 1: this for the cod boots.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Let's go around the table.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Max, No, no, you don't vote like that.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Come on, I want to build up tension.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Tungsten, Tungsten, vote that quickly. Hold but Phil, what did
- 37:12Speaker 1: you vote for?
- 37:13Speaker 10: I was gonna vote for number two?
- 37:14Speaker 1: So you did vote. It's not decided. I'm sorry, Tungsten. Okay,
- 37:21Speaker 1: just I'm just out of curiosity. What were you gonna
- 37:22Speaker 1: vote for?
- 37:23Speaker 10: Number two?
- 37:24Speaker 4: I do see w D what you guys lost. It's fine.
- 37:28Speaker 1: So the tungsten guy not only did he win the playoffs, yeah.
- 37:35Speaker 5: Wow, Chris Lund.
- 37:37Speaker 10: But he didn't have a mistake.
- 37:38Speaker 5: We will reach out to you.
- 37:40Speaker 11: His cube dimensions should be one inch by one inch
- 37:42Speaker 11: by one inch.
- 37:44Speaker 7: Oh yeah, well take that, Chris if it's a cube,
- 37:49Speaker 7: then it's implied by one inch cube.
- 37:53Speaker 10: So Chris, you know, just check it.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Yeah, let's send him some uh one side. Yeah, we
- 38:01Speaker 1: might have to like scuff him, like scuff him up
- 38:03Speaker 1: a little bit or something for you gotta scuff him up.
- 38:07Speaker 1: That's a great point. Yeah, one inch cube. That covers
- 38:11Speaker 1: it in his face.
- 38:15Speaker 2: He did say he doesn't have he lacks credentials, So come.
- 38:18Speaker 9: On, well, is redundancy you know, is that something we
- 38:21Speaker 9: need to correct?
- 38:22Speaker 1: You know?
- 38:23Speaker 9: Yes, bait.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Okay, if someone wrote in and he says, hey, I
- 38:25Speaker 1: got a correction about redundancy, I'd let it slip in there.
- 38:28Speaker 1: He might win some boots. I don't know. Great, all right,
- 38:30Speaker 1: Brody audience emails. Brody Kid wrote in about some lambs.
- 38:34Speaker 7: Yeah, this is great because it's not an email. It's
- 38:36Speaker 7: actually a handwritten letter. So I love this kid already.
- 38:40Speaker 4: We just got this today breaking news.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Okay, here we go. Hello.
- 38:45Speaker 7: My name is Easton Sutter. I'm twelve years old and
- 38:48Speaker 7: I am a sixth grader at Fort Recovery Junior High
- 38:51Speaker 7: and Fort Recovery, Ohio.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Kid writes a great letter. Fort Recovery is.
- 38:55Speaker 4: A small rural farm town in the middle of nowhere
- 38:57Speaker 4: that nobody.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Has ever heard of.
- 39:00Speaker 1: It really sets the sea.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:02Speaker 7: I love hunting, fishing, and pretty much anything in nature.
- 39:05Speaker 7: This past year I went turkey, rabbit and deer hunting
- 39:08Speaker 7: with my dad. This past year season, I shot my
- 39:10Speaker 7: first buck. My favorite part of hunting is spending one
- 39:14Speaker 7: on one time with my dad. When you ride in
- 39:16Speaker 7: the car, the first thing we typically do is turn
- 39:19Speaker 7: on the Meat Eater podcast or trivia, but sadly we
- 39:22Speaker 7: have not gotten to try Meat Eater turtle. There you go,
- 39:25Speaker 7: Spencer has tried your wordle turtle. My dad is really
- 39:30Speaker 7: good at trivia and would make a great addition to
- 39:33Speaker 7: the Meat Eater crew. I love that I am an
- 39:36Speaker 7: active member of This is where it gets real good.
- 39:38Speaker 7: I'm an active member of four h and this year
- 39:41Speaker 7: my project. For my project, I have to show I
- 39:46Speaker 7: have two show lambs. Their names are Steve and Brody.
- 39:51Speaker 7: There was a third named Yanni, but it had a
- 39:54Speaker 7: bummed leg and was sent to the chop house.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Sounds about right.
- 40:00Speaker 2: I wanted to know if you would like to bid
- 40:04Speaker 2: on my lamb.
- 40:05Speaker 7: So if you guys want to figure that out, the audience,
- 40:08Speaker 7: you can bid on his lambs. The money I will
- 40:10Speaker 7: make will go into future college expenses, and if you
- 40:13Speaker 7: are interested, I have closed the information to do so.
- 40:16Speaker 7: Thank you for your time and I look forward to
- 40:18Speaker 7: hearing back from you. Here's to lots more car rides
- 40:21Speaker 7: with meat Eater on the radio.
- 40:23Speaker 1: So does he ship those lambs the lamb meat to us?
- 40:26Speaker 2: I'm not sure. We'll have to get in touch with him.
- 40:28Speaker 2: He used snail mail, so we're gonna have to figure
- 40:31Speaker 2: it out.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Huh, hope someone buys the land easton Sutter.
- 40:35Speaker 7: If you're listening to us, send us an email so
- 40:37Speaker 7: we can, uh, we can figure some stuff out for you.
- 40:41Speaker 1: Someone I know offered to have a bunch of pasture
- 40:44Speaker 1: and they offered to my daughter that she could raise
- 40:46Speaker 1: a cow on there. So she's telling everybody she's gonna
- 40:49Speaker 1: start raising paddle the money. I'm like, what look into
- 40:53Speaker 1: this little bit. There's a couple of complicating factors here.
- 40:58Speaker 1: We need to consider.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Amiani from the chop House.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Okay, I just thought here's another one. Oh, this is
- 41:05Speaker 1: just an update. Remember if you guys listened to the show,
- 41:08Speaker 1: you remember we were really pushing that mountain goat raffle
- 41:10Speaker 1: in Alaska. Man that came in. That was a great
- 41:13Speaker 1: fundraiser for the organization they raised. You guys, really, you
- 41:17Speaker 1: guys did two things. Everyone that came into support, and
- 41:20Speaker 1: we drove a bunch of support. There. You did two things.
- 41:23Speaker 1: You helped them raise a bunch of money, and you
- 41:24Speaker 1: also shot your odds to all to help on the
- 41:29Speaker 1: on the Alaska Mountain Goat raffle. They raised one hundred
- 41:32Speaker 1: and ten thousand, seven hundred and ninety five thousand dollars,
- 41:36Speaker 1: says the far and away the most money raised with
- 41:38Speaker 1: an Alaska goat tag. Damn. They're real happy with all that. Now,
- 41:44Speaker 1: I noticed that I have not gotten my tag in
- 41:46Speaker 1: the mail. Then it might because I don't know. I'm
- 41:49Speaker 1: those statistician about these odds are rough. On top of
- 41:53Speaker 1: this the Delta Junction Bison tag. Get this two hundred
- 41:56Speaker 1: and thirteen grand, four hundred and forty thousand dollars. Unreal.
- 42:00Speaker 1: That's that's what I like to see, Is I like
- 42:02Speaker 1: to see those raffles?
- 42:03Speaker 7: Yeah, because that's getting up into Governor's tag money there.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Yep, because you got this whole We've talked about one
- 42:08Speaker 1: hundred times on the podcast. You got the Governor's tags
- 42:11Speaker 1: they auction it to the highest bidder, and it brings
- 42:13Speaker 1: a lot of money for stuff. But it's just like
- 42:17Speaker 1: like Joe blow working dude is not in the running
- 42:21Speaker 1: on a governor's tag, and it puts the conservation groups
- 42:24Speaker 1: in a pickle. You could do a raffle and have
- 42:27Speaker 1: anybody have a chance to win, but you're not going
- 42:30Speaker 1: to raise much money. You do a governor's tag and
- 42:33Speaker 1: and you have like a handful of billionaires have a
- 42:36Speaker 1: chance to win, and it's a bunch of money. So
- 42:40Speaker 1: to see these really successful, like really successful raffles is
- 42:43Speaker 1: cool because like anybody can participate, everybody's got a chance
- 42:47Speaker 1: to win, and then you still get a nice price
- 42:49Speaker 1: tag toward conservation work.
- 42:51Speaker 3: What was the price for putting in for the raffle?
- 42:54Speaker 1: I can't remember. I bought. I bought. I bought an
- 42:57Speaker 1: undisclosed dollar amount worth of entries. Okay, not that I didn't.
- 43:03Speaker 3: I didn't didn't go crazy.
- 43:04Speaker 1: I'll disclose about a hundred bucks worth of entry. Yeah,
- 43:08Speaker 1: about a hundred bucks.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Oh brody, Oh yeah, it's Turkey Week.
- 43:16Speaker 7: I covered this a little bit in the first part
- 43:19Speaker 7: of this in Radio Live, I think a while back.
- 43:23Speaker 7: But I'll start over and cover both parts.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, we didn't eat the damn it. Where's
- 43:30Speaker 1: this part where we eat the jerky? Yeah I missed that. Okay,
- 43:37Speaker 1: do you want to start off?
- 43:40Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 43:40Speaker 1: I don't know. I have so. Remember we were talking
- 43:42Speaker 1: on the news show about making jerky out of nuts,
- 43:46Speaker 1: dear nuts. Okay, he sent us the nuts, and I
- 43:50Speaker 1: was saying, don't poisonous, he said. The guy rode in,
- 43:58Speaker 1: one grown man to another. You a dry deer nut
- 44:01Speaker 1: is one of the weirdest things I've done. Now, my
- 44:04Speaker 1: wife told me to send you some of that dried heart.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Unfortunately for you, I have eaten the heart. It was excellent.
- 44:11Speaker 1: You are one of the few hunters that he says,
- 44:13Speaker 1: some nice stuff. He fought fire up here, and he
- 44:18Speaker 1: goes on the jerky. I dry smoke and preserved meat
- 44:21Speaker 1: as folks has for generations before me. In my neck
- 44:24Speaker 1: of the woods, the Caddo and Comanche tribes dried strips
- 44:28Speaker 1: of meat that sustained him throughout the year. So here's
- 44:33Speaker 1: the nut. So he's got one nut, says normal non
- 44:36Speaker 1: nut jerky contains no nuts. You guys, try that, this
- 44:39Speaker 1: is just meat. And then here's the dry testicle. This
- 44:43Speaker 1: is deer nut jerky. He wrote a note to saying
- 44:48Speaker 1: that he didn't poison us, not because of it was
- 44:51Speaker 1: like technically hard. He says, he's not that kind of guy.
- 44:55Speaker 4: Ah, it'd be easy to pull off though, if he.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Was saying if he wanted to poison us, he would have.
- 45:00Speaker 1: But he's just that that that kind of guy. So
- 45:01Speaker 1: here's the nut. This is the This is a dried nut.
- 45:05Speaker 3: Are you expecting has that texture?
- 45:07Speaker 5: Because when it's.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Carved, me off a honk of that? Or does it break?
- 45:15Speaker 3: Does it just tastes like smoked charaoke flavor?
- 45:21Speaker 4: It looks the same as the rest of the jerky,
- 45:24Speaker 4: like like jerky.
- 45:25Speaker 5: But nuts are nuts are much whiter than you.
- 45:30Speaker 4: Can give a dispenser names off putting finish, EXE Spencer
- 45:36Speaker 4: off putting finish.
- 45:38Speaker 3: The jerky is tough ship.
- 45:42Speaker 1: I'm surprised at a nut. I'm surprised the testicle dries
- 45:46Speaker 1: up like that.
- 45:46Speaker 3: To be honest with you, you didn't slice it all.
- 45:49Speaker 1: That's very pasty, very pasty finish. You don't think he sliced.
- 45:55Speaker 7: Sliced and that that uh, it smells like whatever you.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Want to call that. On the out it's not very good.
- 46:03Speaker 4: Well, well, I don't.
- 46:06Speaker 7: Think it's like as bad as you guys.
- 46:09Speaker 1: Okay, just cut that in half.
- 46:11Speaker 4: And give me I wouldn't need to eat that ever.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Again. Here, here's all I like to think of bad foods.
- 46:16Speaker 1: I'm not offended, but here's a measure of bad foods.
- 46:22Speaker 1: My wife recently bought these salted dried I don't know
- 46:26Speaker 1: why she bought them, salted dried prunes, and I was like,
- 46:31Speaker 1: my god, that's bad when I ate one. But then
- 46:33Speaker 1: I put left in my truck, and a few times
- 46:36Speaker 1: I drove around and I'd eat one, and I take
- 46:39Speaker 1: to myself, my god, that's bad. But you kept eating
- 46:42Speaker 1: them and eventually threw it away. If he sent me
- 46:45Speaker 1: a sack of those nuts, I would probably another time
- 46:49Speaker 1: eat one and be like, my god, that's bad.
- 46:53Speaker 3: Krin spitting it out and I eat a lot of
- 46:57Speaker 3: I don't like.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Your big talk. You didn't need to clean your plate.
- 47:04Speaker 3: Chew.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Oh, I quite like it.
- 47:06Speaker 3: I like it.
- 47:08Speaker 7: I just don't think it's like the worst thing I've
- 47:10Speaker 7: ever had eat it.
- 47:11Speaker 1: I don't I like it.
- 47:13Speaker 4: I know how good like a deer testicle can taste,
- 47:16Speaker 4: and it's like a like a very pleasant thing to eat.
- 47:19Speaker 4: And this was not that.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Like outer memorhis like skin membrane.
- 47:25Speaker 5: It's got guys.
- 47:26Speaker 9: Don't do that at home.
- 47:28Speaker 4: Boy, But that's a satisfying result, now I know that.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Like that.
- 47:34Speaker 7: Yeah, I'd rather smell that castors and castor oil than
- 47:38Speaker 7: eat that.
- 47:41Speaker 1: Remember on the We Are the World video, they use
- 47:43Speaker 1: those little things to protect their microphones.
- 47:46Speaker 4: No, I don't remember that.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Oh Phil, don't don't pull that up. But can you
- 47:53Speaker 1: pull the guy up all riled up about going turkey hunting?
- 47:56Speaker 9: If you I need a link, I don't even know
- 47:59Speaker 9: what to search for, send it to yep.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Okay, all right, bro to do your thing now. Folks
- 48:03Speaker 1: listening at home here, this is you're gonna don't don't
- 48:07Speaker 1: think that this is just don't think that this is
- 48:10Speaker 1: just local news for us, right, because this is like
- 48:13Speaker 1: a management strategy you should be aware of. That's what
- 48:16Speaker 1: I was thinking.
- 48:17Speaker 2: A trend that's happening more and more.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a trend that's.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Regarding non resident hunters.
- 48:22Speaker 6: Uh.
- 48:23Speaker 7: Last year Montana Senate Bill five fourteen was passed, and
- 48:28Speaker 7: uh we I like somehow it went like under the
- 48:34Speaker 7: radar for a while at least for me.
- 48:36Speaker 1: I never heard hiding her hair about.
- 48:38Speaker 2: It, but then I caught onto it because I hunt pheasants.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Can I interrupt one second? You want to know what's wrong
- 48:44Speaker 1: with that jerky? You know, when you're eating jerky, normally
- 48:47Speaker 1: you chew it a while and you wind up with
- 48:49Speaker 1: kind of like a cud. You're chewing, chewing, chewing that
- 48:53Speaker 1: nut jerky, and all of a sudden it's a paste.
- 48:58Speaker 9: Yeah, go on, is that still in your mouth?
- 49:04Speaker 2: Okay?
- 49:05Speaker 7: So sen it Bill five fourteen. It grants resident Upland
- 49:10Speaker 7: bird hunters a ten day head start over non residents. Now,
- 49:15Speaker 7: the reason I again I caught this was a regarding
- 49:18Speaker 7: pheasant season, but other other Upland birds, sharp tail grouse,
- 49:23Speaker 7: hungarian partment and stuff like that. I think that season
- 49:26Speaker 7: for pheasants anyway, starts early October. Now, non resident hunters
- 49:30Speaker 7: have to wait ten days before they can hunt them
- 49:33Speaker 7: on public land or on like private land that has
- 49:38Speaker 7: public access.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Programs like block management in Montana.
- 49:42Speaker 1: But they're not jumping the season earlier. It's just your loose.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Non residents lose ten day exactly.
- 49:47Speaker 7: And if those non resident hunters have access to private
- 49:51Speaker 7: private good.
- 49:51Speaker 2: Day can go hunt.
- 49:53Speaker 7: What I didn't realize is that because Montana categorizes turkeys
- 49:59Speaker 7: as upland game birds, this rule also applies to.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Spring turkey season.
- 50:05Speaker 7: So spring turkey opens April fifteenth in Montana, non residents
- 50:10Speaker 7: can't start hunting them on public or private with public
- 50:13Speaker 7: access till April twenty fifth.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Yeah, And then, weirdly, and this kind of pisses me off,
- 50:23Speaker 1: they exempted mountain grass. They did, do I get it.
- 50:27Speaker 7: The only thing I can think of is there's a
- 50:28Speaker 7: bunch of non resident archery hunters elk hunters out there
- 50:32Speaker 7: that are sticking grass.
- 50:34Speaker 1: For That's not why.
- 50:36Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 50:36Speaker 4: I had the same as there's just no there's a
- 50:39Speaker 4: very little pressure on those mountain birds.
- 50:40Speaker 1: I don't like it. I think they should have all
- 50:43Speaker 1: are none?
- 50:43Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know, Like yeah either way. So this is, like,
- 50:49Speaker 7: you know, it's a pretty big change, and I think
- 50:52Speaker 7: follows a trend of mostly Western states.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Doing what they can to limit the impact.
- 51:01Speaker 7: Of non resident hunting pressure and doing something where they can,
- 51:04Speaker 7: like present a regulation saying we're trying to alleviate this
- 51:10Speaker 7: pressure that you guys are talking about.
- 51:13Speaker 2: You've seen it. Colorado went away from over the counter
- 51:17Speaker 2: archery elk tags.
- 51:19Speaker 7: Montana cut a number of non resident mule deer tags.
- 51:25Speaker 7: Wyoming has lowered their cap on all non resident tags.
- 51:30Speaker 7: So it's just like this trend that has happened. I
- 51:32Speaker 7: think it's going to continue.
- 51:34Speaker 1: To more like you have a growing number of residents yep,
- 51:38Speaker 1: as more people leave cities, leave high tax areas, so
- 51:41Speaker 1: you're growing numbers of residents in Wyoming Montana. Idoh, and
- 51:46Speaker 1: then and then like the pieyes be cut up differently.
- 51:53Speaker 7: Yeah, And I'd honestly like as far as pheasant season,
- 51:57Speaker 7: like it's nice to be out there the first few
- 51:58Speaker 7: days when you're shooting young of the year dumb birds, right,
- 52:02Speaker 7: but it's a three month season.
- 52:04Speaker 2: You're not losing that much as a non.
- 52:05Speaker 7: Resident turkey's in Montana. There's some years weatherwise where you
- 52:10Speaker 7: can't hunt the first or don't want to hunt the
- 52:12Speaker 7: first week of the season anyway, and.
- 52:13Speaker 3: Like all the birds are hend up anyway, So it's like,
- 52:16Speaker 3: so not a big deal. Hold what I I personally
- 52:20Speaker 3: think that first like fifteen days of the season, there's
- 52:24Speaker 3: a lot of birds, a lot of toms that are
- 52:26Speaker 3: hend up.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Like snow storms and ship like, Yeah, but yeah, okay,
- 52:33Speaker 2: either way, there you go.
- 52:36Speaker 1: I have thoughts. Uh, this is one of those deals
- 52:40Speaker 1: where you got I try to like, so it's my
- 52:44Speaker 1: state right where I live, so you like, so to myself,
- 52:48Speaker 1: I'm going like, sweet dude, stick it to them, right,
- 52:51Speaker 1: But so just acknowledging that truth. Yeah, I feel obligated
- 52:56Speaker 1: to point out a couple of details or point out
- 52:58Speaker 1: a couple minor counterpoints just to just to open it
- 53:02Speaker 1: all to be fair where you get into trouble. Even
- 53:07Speaker 1: though I like this, I like this because this is
- 53:09Speaker 1: you know, helps helps me out where you get into trouble.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Is non resident licenses keeps the lights on at the
- 53:17Speaker 1: fishing game agents. Listen.
- 53:18Speaker 7: That's why I think you're seeing it with pheasants and
- 53:21Speaker 7: turkeys and not elk, Like they're not going to push
- 53:24Speaker 7: rifle elk season back ten days that you'll see that
- 53:28Speaker 7: they might.
- 53:28Speaker 1: But that's what that's what keeps the lights on. And
- 53:31Speaker 1: it could be that the that the agency is sitting
- 53:34Speaker 1: there saying what people really want, and it would be
- 53:37Speaker 1: enormous Like if you let's say you did a states
- 53:40Speaker 1: you did a vote in a state referendum, any state, don'tkay,
- 53:44Speaker 1: you did Montana, Cold, any state Wisconsin. You did a
- 53:49Speaker 1: state vote and said, hey, should non residents have to
- 53:51Speaker 1: wait ten days to start dear having with a rifle.
- 53:54Speaker 1: It would pass everywhere. The agency is going to be
- 53:57Speaker 1: like the hold on a minute, because all of our
- 53:59Speaker 1: funding comes from non resident You guys are all hunting
- 54:01Speaker 1: deer for thirty bucks. These guys are paying three hundred
- 54:04Speaker 1: bucks a huntred well.
- 54:05Speaker 7: And there's also the outfitters to consider you'd shrink their season,
- 54:09Speaker 7: you know that, who.
- 54:09Speaker 1: Would be pissed. Yeah, yeah, you're right. So it's like
- 54:12Speaker 1: it's like you can kind of scratch the itch yep
- 54:15Speaker 1: a little bit, and maybe it's like you're scratching the
- 54:17Speaker 1: itch a little bit where you're not gonna hurt the
- 54:19Speaker 1: agency's funding model. The other thing is I look at
- 54:23Speaker 1: it like from this perspective, because I jump, I hunt
- 54:25Speaker 1: all over the place, you know, I jump from state
- 54:28Speaker 1: to state and hunt. So here I'm going like, let's say,
- 54:32Speaker 1: like I go to we hunt the kiddie season, we
- 54:35Speaker 1: hunt the youth season Wisconsin. Every year. If someone said,
- 54:38Speaker 1: all of a sudden, they says it's a two day
- 54:41Speaker 1: youth season, and someone comes and says, hey, the first
- 54:44Speaker 1: day of Wisconsin's youth season is resident only. I would say, oh, man, yeah,
- 54:52Speaker 1: but what and I'd be all bummed out. But you'd
- 54:56Speaker 1: still go I wouldn't have this. What could I do? Boy,
- 54:58Speaker 1: it's not in my state. I would feel like it
- 55:01Speaker 1: was someone else deciding something and I was not part
- 55:03Speaker 1: of the decision making process. I'd be bummed. So I
- 55:07Speaker 1: get it that people are bummed, But at the same time,
- 55:09Speaker 1: went just to be like totally upfront and honest. When
- 55:12Speaker 1: I saw this, I'm like, us cool, yeah.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Because yeah, I mean I'm not crying because.
- 55:17Speaker 1: There's a self serving element to everything.
- 55:19Speaker 7: Like, look, I think they would do as much of
- 55:22Speaker 7: this as they could if they thought they could get
- 55:24Speaker 7: away with but there's a ceiling to it, Like you said,
- 55:26Speaker 7: they can only go so far with it.
- 55:28Speaker 1: Yeah, the real losers and anything like this, the real
- 55:33Speaker 1: losers are. And if you take this state, the real losers,
- 55:38Speaker 1: it's Washington in Minnesota because those dudes hunt this state hard.
- 55:47Speaker 2: Hard yep.
- 55:48Speaker 9: Yeah, okay, I've got that video of you watching.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Oh yeah, this is great. I like this guy check
- 55:56Speaker 1: this out. This is just right now.
- 55:57Speaker 3: He said this, I think yesterday.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Listen to this guy We'll kill a turkey in the morning.
- 56:04Speaker 1: Could someone say who someone that knows about sports say
- 56:07Speaker 1: who he is?
- 56:09Speaker 10: Isn't that the I think.
- 56:12Speaker 3: Women's Yeah, Texas Longhorns coach.
- 56:14Speaker 1: Okay, Texas longharn.
- 56:16Speaker 3: And they just advanced to the final four.
- 56:18Speaker 1: He's got a fishing net around his neck. No, that's joke.
- 56:22Speaker 1: That's a sports joke.
- 56:23Speaker 3: I was making sure was making sure you knew what
- 56:26Speaker 3: it was.
- 56:28Speaker 1: He's got a basketball hoop around his neck. They just won.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Turkey in the morning.
- 56:32Speaker 8: I'll be in office by ten o'clock and I'll be
- 56:34Speaker 8: in the film watching film, getting ready. And then the
- 56:38Speaker 8: second thing is I'm gonna leave for Phoenix tomorrow. Just
- 56:43Speaker 8: being honest, that's gonna happen. I've earned that right to
- 56:46Speaker 8: be in the woods for a couple hours in the
- 56:48Speaker 8: morning calling a turkey, and then we'll get ready for
- 56:52Speaker 8: whoever's you know, whatever.
- 56:55Speaker 2: Is going to happen after that.
- 56:56Speaker 8: But I'll watch film tonight, absolutely all the way home.
- 57:00Speaker 8: I'll watch it till I can't stay awake tonight, just
- 57:02Speaker 8: like I've done here for four or five straight nights.
- 57:05Speaker 8: But I'm gonna treat myself in the morning too. It
- 57:08Speaker 8: might not even take longer than thirty minutes, if I
- 57:10Speaker 8: can call that dude off the roost. After that, I'll
- 57:14Speaker 8: be in the office and I'll be getting ready for UCLA.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Amen, and has a good hunt. He got one?
- 57:22Speaker 3: I found out. Yeah, I had to like google it.
- 57:25Speaker 3: But on Twitter he posted a photo of you got one.
- 57:27Speaker 11: The next morning, he was so into thinking about turkeys
- 57:30Speaker 11: he couldn't remember who.
- 57:31Speaker 10: They were playing the next day. At the beginning of
- 57:34Speaker 10: that interview.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Okay, I was talking to name Mason the other day.
- 57:39Speaker 1: He's joining us right now. He was out patterning his
- 57:42Speaker 1: shotgun innocently, unaware of the turkey of the TSS explosion,
- 57:51Speaker 1: price explosion.
- 57:52Speaker 10: Vaguely.
- 57:53Speaker 1: Yeah, munit. Like you know, you don't need to be
- 57:56Speaker 1: a great student of the news to know that there's
- 57:59Speaker 1: a lot of ordnance getting blown up right now around
- 58:02Speaker 1: the world. People dropping bombs all over the place. The
- 58:06Speaker 1: military uses a lot of tungsten in ordnance, in munitions.
- 58:14Speaker 1: They are there's a tungsten shortage. This kind of ties
- 58:18Speaker 1: into US duking it out with China about certain rare
- 58:23Speaker 1: minerals metals. I had a guy came to me. I
- 58:27Speaker 1: don't want to say my source because I could be wrong.
- 58:30Speaker 1: A guy that's in the Ammo business texted me that
- 58:36Speaker 1: he heard from the major Ammo manufacturer that TSS, as
- 58:43Speaker 1: as as an Ammo TSS turkey loads, TSS is done.
- 58:49Speaker 1: He says, it's all going to the government, and it's
- 58:52Speaker 1: time to figure out your next bullet, your next shot.
- 58:57Speaker 1: I don't know osmium supershot to TSS is over. I'm
- 59:01Speaker 1: explaining this to Nate Mason and we're talking about that
- 59:04Speaker 1: a TSS round is about six times more expensive than
- 59:08Speaker 1: what he uses. And he said, is it six times better?
- 59:14Speaker 1: And I said no, maybe it's like one point four
- 59:16Speaker 1: times better. And it inspired him to go on and
- 59:21Speaker 1: make his own website. Yep, the tsstest dot com.
- 59:29Speaker 10: You can go there right now.
- 59:30Speaker 1: He's parked on that domain for one year for a
- 59:32Speaker 1: dollar cost me.
- 59:34Speaker 10: It cost me one eight.
- 59:37Speaker 1: Did you expense that dollar?
- 59:38Speaker 10: No, you ate it.
- 59:39Speaker 11: I'm planning on monetizing this and making much money off it,
- 59:43Speaker 11: enough to buy TSS.
- 59:44Speaker 10: Maybe here's the deal.
- 59:46Speaker 11: A couple disclaimers, well, this is the common man's guide
- 59:50Speaker 11: to TSS. I think we're making a lot of hay
- 59:52Speaker 11: out of TSS when most people don't even they're not.
- 59:56Speaker 1: It's not even in my social sir. Let me tell
- 59:59Speaker 1: you something.
- 59:59Speaker 10: So I'm saying you're not the common Everyone.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: In my social circle shoots TSS.
- 1:00:05Speaker 11: Right, So this is my second distiller.
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: Let me let me I have never hunted a turkey
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: in my life, and I'm not a data scientist. I'm
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: very much common man.
- 1:00:22Speaker 11: This is ripe for corrections, So get to sharpen your pencils, smitpickers.
- 1:00:29Speaker 11: But I think it makes me uniquely qualified to take
- 1:00:32Speaker 11: an objective view of TSS or the lack that so.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: Phil has TSS for the common man pulled up.
- 1:00:38Speaker 11: Yeah, you go to the TSS test dot com and
- 1:00:42Speaker 11: this was a lot of a lot of t's.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:45Speaker 10: I'm a big a literative guy.
- 1:00:50Speaker 11: And to answered the question, can I justify buying TSS
- 1:00:53Speaker 11: for fifteen seventeen twenty bucks a shell? Everyone's got different situations, variables, ethics, setups.
- 1:01:02Speaker 11: And so I pulled a number of season turkey hunters
- 1:01:06Speaker 11: from across the US and basically asked, what's the average
- 1:01:10Speaker 11: range at which a turkey presents the shot to you?
- 1:01:14Speaker 10: Because that's what really matters.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: And I thought about this answer long and hard, long,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: and yann I put it to Yanni long and hard see.
- 1:01:19Speaker 11: But I also thought about that because I think you're
- 1:01:21Speaker 11: hunting primo spots.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Dude, it's nothing. So no, I'm just saying I want
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: people to understand again, you're not a data guy. No,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: you're a data guy. You're not a turkey guy.
- 1:01:31Speaker 10: I'm neither.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: This is a working draft of a website V one.
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: And you also probably can't argue with experienced Turkey hunters
- 1:01:38Speaker 7: over what they're seeing since you're not agreed.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: Turkey hunt a lot of places, right, I don't. I
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: don't want to remind you, but I'm a two time
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: super what's the Slam? When you get the World?
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: No?
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: Yeah, grant two time? No way more than Grand World?
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: World includes the Mexican.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: What's the one that doesn't include the oscillated Super two
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: times Super Slam holders?
- 1:02:05Speaker 10: They don't even know what those are.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: That's a little. So what I'm saying is when I
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: give you turkey data, turkey dope, it's from all over buddy, yep.
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: But all those data points are from Steve's shoes.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Okay, go on.
- 1:02:19Speaker 11: So in light of that, I factor in a bunch
- 1:02:21Speaker 11: of variables and you can go on here and put
- 1:02:23Speaker 11: in your situation, whether it's the caginess of your turkeys,
- 1:02:28Speaker 11: the species you're hunting.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: Hold on before I get corrected. Grand Slam is Eastern
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: Rio mariam Osceola Royal Slam.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: That shouldn'tven be a thing.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: It's all for level. Yeah. The Royal Slam is the
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: Grand Slam plus plus the Goulds, and then the World
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: Slam is the Royal Slam plus the oscillated.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: So two time royal holder. Yeah.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: The US Super Slam is all forty nine states. Sorry,
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: all forty nine states that has turkeys.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: You know what bottlenext me on that is? I only
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: got to uh, I only got two goulds, two more
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: than a lot of people. Yeah, I mean that's what
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: Bottleneck and me on not being a three time You.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: Want to start on that forty nine thing?
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: No, no, not interested. I want to get back to
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: Nate's Thanks.
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: Sorry, All right, Oh that.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Was great because you would have got corrected.
- 1:03:22Speaker 11: Oh yeah, so dude, I think you just pull that
- 1:03:24Speaker 11: sucker up and go through it.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Okay, So you go to TSS for the common Man.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Nate Mason's thing. It's a working draft. He's trying to
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: help you find out if it's right for you. You
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: click find my show.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: Who's Who's going to be our hunter?
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Max?
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Max? Okay, okay Max? Does your hunting spot actually allow
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: for a forty five yard shot? Great question? No, oh
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: you can't see that far.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: I'm in the trees. I'm in the timber.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Okay. Boom oh you mean is that funny? Skip? It's
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: already done. Skip the tss Yeah, get back up.
- 1:04:01Speaker 7: You can sell that stash you got like pretty Okay.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Let's let's start over. Max. Let's let's change your story.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Let's say you're hunting Aria. It's like not to heavily timbered.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: For the record, I'm just putting myself in spots that
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: I'm not shooting past forty five yeah.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: Like like woods hunting, like or like.
- 1:04:20Speaker 10: You don't shoot it.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Yeah, but like even like out here in Montana, I'm
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: not setting up one hundred yards from a rise, like
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: I'm setting up close to that rise that turkey is coming.
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: Up boom in your face.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: Yes, but I know, just for the sake of the
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: poor guy's website says hell yeah, he says hell yeah
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: he is. Okay, does your Turkey trip cost one thousand more?
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: I would hope not let's say it does not.
- 1:04:51Speaker 9: Phil Oh, wow, it's getting intense now.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: Yeah, now your situation species Max beer Iams, Yeah, okay,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Miriams using a decoy? No, no, you don't use a decoy.
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: Depends on the situation.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: But there's a lot of depends, right, this trip is
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: not okay? Now, how would you rate the cageness of
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: the turkeys where you hunt? Max?
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: I would give him, Oh, it's negative five to five.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: It's butter balls meaning domestics or old public land rope draggers.
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: Don't do the thing where people say Miriams are stupid.
- 1:05:28Speaker 10: That's factored into the species.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Give it to to, So can you change that to
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: old public land rope draggers.
- 1:05:38Speaker 10: I'll take those notes.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Next to Okay, calling skill, I would say, don't call,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: and then you're pressed and Pittman, don't sell yourself short
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: one you better average? I would give no, because he's
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: like really good, okay, average killable gobblers per day? If
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: you hunted a day and had one come through in range,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: you know, how many would you expect? Like, let me
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: give you for instance, when we go to hunt youth turkey, Okay,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: if we're hunting hard, I would say not that we're
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: gonna get it. Not that the kids are gonna shoot,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: but like I would expect in a day, we're gonna
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: have a burden range.
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: You would lay eyes on a bird.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: Like I'd be like, like if I was shooting, like
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: I would you know or whatever are you looking at?
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: Like?
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: You should have had it? You should have had it.
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: You messed up defined by as within seventy yards.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: He had a hen behind him, so you couldn't shoot.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: He like his head came through a clearing and you
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: weren't ready. Your kid didn't see it in time. Whatever
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: killable turkeys.
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: See and just say because forgot one.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: If he hunts hard, he should have he should have
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: a turkey in range.
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: Yes, I go. I would say that, Yes, I was
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: thinking about more.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: But this how many days you got to hunt?
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: Three days on the weekend warrior?
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Okay, he's gonna do a three day hunt. Now your
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: generic old school shell, no TSS, your generic shell? What
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: what's what's max range for you?
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: I'm not shooting past forty okay?
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Forty okay? This one here's where I get confused.
- 1:07:19Speaker 11: This is like a mid range, like a medium middle
- 1:07:23Speaker 11: like that you can like you can't shell premium, premium
- 1:07:27Speaker 11: copper plated.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, so now you got Now you got some uh,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: you got some long bird, you got some long beard.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: What is that up there?
- 1:07:35Speaker 10: Long beard? XR x R.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Are you still pushing past forty?
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: See? I feel like this all depends what gauge are
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: you shooting.
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: We'll do this for you for my setup.
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: Twelve ags. You could push it out to forty.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: What was your other so you don't just push it
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: out to fifty? Okay, he's out to fifty. Now what's
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: the biggest poke you're gonna take with TSS? Biggest poke
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: like when you got to get a rest that kind
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: of shot.
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, I'll answer for him. No, me personally,
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: I'm not shooting past forty. I don't care what kind
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: of shell I'm shooting.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: Oh so then okay, then take his fifty back to
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: forty and put TSS at forty.
- 1:08:17Speaker 9: I think we know what the answer is going to be.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Yeah, guy, it's like the worst guy.
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: We already answered it off the writ I.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Know, he's the worst guy in the world to like
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: try to get.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: Trying to tell you that this is why, RIGHTA.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: I know, but you know what, you're not doing You're
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: not like you're you're like you're not. No, I know
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: you're trying to stay true to who you are.
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: Just go forty fifty six, you're not just bullshit, Survey.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: But still, let's he had man, Okay, let me, let me,
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: let me override him. Just just is like forty with
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: my whispered in his ear. He's like forty with my
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: old man's contemplating forces range long beard x R. I'll
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: stretch it to forty fifty t I'm going to reach
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: out to sixty.
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: Survey says, Oh wow, scraps, this is awesome, Nate.
- 1:09:07Speaker 9: Oh the long beard xs are is the best bang
- 1:09:10Speaker 9: for your buck.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: That's equivalent. You don't need tss.
- 1:09:15Speaker 10: Right there you go.
- 1:09:16Speaker 7: I'll take it all, give it to me because I
- 1:09:19Speaker 7: ain't stopping to shooting that stuff until run out of it.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Okay, the last bit, well, I told you to check
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: your numbers on.
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: Shelves YEP, cost per additional point. So what you're looking
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: at is you're getting a bell curve of where.
- 1:09:31Speaker 10: You're going to get a SHOTEP.
- 1:09:32Speaker 11: It might walk up to ten, it might hang up
- 1:09:35Speaker 11: at sixty, but on average they're going to be about
- 1:09:37Speaker 11: forty yards and.
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: So you can get that done with the medium, middle of.
- 1:09:41Speaker 10: The road copper.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Okay, And what costs are you dealing with here? Because
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: you took it like a little.
- 1:09:45Speaker 11: Yeah, So you scroll down, you look at the assumptions,
- 1:09:47Speaker 11: and we can make these variable. But generics are going
- 1:09:50Speaker 11: to cost you about a buck fifty, your middle of
- 1:09:52Speaker 11: the road two fifty. Your TSS is going to cost
- 1:09:54Speaker 11: you seventeen dollars a ship today today.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: I thought it'd be higher that by now. Probably kinda
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: takes the fun out of shooting, don't it. Yeah, and
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: you're seventeen bucks exactly. I just don't.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: Twenty bucks to me, man.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: I know, but sometimes just strip it a couple of
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: shots at the paper I do Yanni Chimani, he says,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: he when he's when he's uh patterning out, he's patterning
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: out on old schoolers, and then he double checks outs
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: or bird shot.
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I just use cheap yea target loads.
- 1:10:26Speaker 11: Yeah, hit the u R elegant the TSS test dot com.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: And what is your pathway toward monetizing this test?
- 1:10:35Speaker 10: I haven't figured that out yet.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: How many site visits have you had?
- 1:10:37Speaker 10: I don't know how to read that data. I bought
- 1:10:43Speaker 10: that sucker and shipped it.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: I'm afraid that you'll have three site visits and they
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: all came from the same at the same address.
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: I like the bottom. There's like bottom, it's almost like
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: in quotes, but it's like immediate laboratories resource.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: No, he really brandized. He put more into branding than
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: he put into thinking. You know, you know, you like get.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: And offer from big lead to buy this.
- 1:11:08Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah, yeah, Okay, So we covered Turkey season updates.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: We covered the TSS purchase guide again. Please listeners go
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: to the tsstest dot com and find out if TSS
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: is right for you. Over to Spencer, I'm.
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: Gonna talk about Death Valley National Park. Death Valley it's
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: the biggest national park in the lower forty eight. It's
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: located about two hours west of Las Vegas in east
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: central California. Part of the park spills over into Nevada,
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: but not much of it. When you think of like
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: Death Valley, you're thinking of the California portion. It's the lowest, driest,
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: and hottest place on the continent in all of North America.
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: One part of the park sits at two hundred and
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: eighty two feet below sea level. It averages less than
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: two inches of precipitation every year, and actually in nineteen
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: twenty nine, in nineteen fifty three, there was no precipitation
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: at all recorded. It currently holds the world record for
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: the hottest temperature ever recorded, when it reached one hundred
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: and thirty four degrees fahrenheit on July tenth, nineteen thirteen.
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: So now you know all about what Death Valley looks
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: like and feels like.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you one thing you didn't mention that
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: I always liked. Water doesn't leave there just a basin. Yeah,
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: because it's a blow sea. It's a dead end. Yeah.
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: I think it's like the remnants of an old lake
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: that used to be seven thousand feet deep. Now what's
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: left there is in his Death Valley. Now, despite this
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: intense heat and lack of rain, stuff still rows there.
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: They have mesquite trees, prickly pear, cactus, bitter root, whole
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: bunch of succulents and cacti. Then there's a number of wildflowers.
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: Most of these wild flowers only show up during a
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: super bloom. The Death Valley super bloom only happens about
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: every ten years. The last time it happened was in
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: twenty sixteen. Prior to that, there was one in two
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: thousand and five and nineteen ninety eight. They require perfect conditions.
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: Most notably, you need a wet fall in winter and
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: its precipitation washes the salt off of the wild flower
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: seeds and wakes them up after they lay dormant for
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: a decade.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: No, kid, the seeds are salted, and.
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: That precipitation will It could take your salt away, and
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: it signals, you know, to the seeds, okay, time to go.
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: You can almost see like the path that the water takes.
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: Yeah, we're looking at pictures right now. You can see
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: them on you.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: How long from moisture to this?
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: Well, these these pictures. The super bloom can vary. We'll
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: get to it in a second. But like when I
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: was there in twenty twenty three, I was there in
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: mid March. Flowers did not start blooming until late March
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: that year they had they had an above average bloom.
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: It was not a super blue.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Were you trying to hit the bloom?
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: I knew it would be a good time to be.
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: It wasn't like the point of the whole trip, yep.
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: But it was like a factor in being there in
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: mid March. Yeah, the perfect conditions. Mostly it's just a wet,
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: falling winter. They're about twenty of these wild flowers that
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: participate in the super bloom. They have a short growing
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: window when they do show up. Now, it's similar to
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: predator swamping. Explain what that is, Steve, preder swamping.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a reproductive strategy that humans interpret as Let's
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: say have a large nesting colony of birds. If they
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: all lay their eggs at the same time, the local
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: predator population doesn't have a chance of getting them all.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: They'll kind of work the edges of the colony, but
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: they'll never get them all. Whereas if those birds spread
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: their nesting out over a month, you would just have
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: a month of sporadic predation. So predator swamping like when
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: when l all tend to hit the ground, Elk fawns
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: all hit the ground on the same day.
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: Calves are going to get corrected.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, elk calves they all hit the ground the same day,
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: some are going to live. If they all hit the
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: ground over the course of six weeks, it could be
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: they all get killed.
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: Yeah, right, predator swamp, you're overwhelming predator That would be
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: like a mammal version of that. I think other you know,
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: animals will participate as well. The super bloom does a
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: similar thing and overwhelms the landscape because by blooming simultaneously,
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: they'll guaranteed to attract a lot of pollinators butterflies, moths, bees,
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: hummingbirds that otherwise aren't going to show up in Death
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: Valley and visit this desert. Now here's why I'm talking
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: about this today. Twenty twenty six is a super bloom year.
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: And this was predicted going back to September because they
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: got a big rainfall. Then it was followed by two
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: and a half more inches of rain between November and January.
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: That's that's exactly what you want for a super bloom.
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: I found a blog post from a Death Valley guide
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: on November fourteen, twenty twenty five, where he said, quote,
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: I don't recall a setup quite this favorable in the
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: last fifteen years, And that guide was right. The super
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: bloom started in mid February. It's expected to last into May.
- 1:16:07Speaker 7: It likely your guy's gonna ask you, So it lasts
- 1:16:10Speaker 7: a while, It lasts not like a week, and they're
- 1:16:12Speaker 7: all gone.
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: Once the flowers are up. The biggest thing is heat
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: and wind. Those are the enemies of like a lasting
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: super bloom. Now, this one probably peaked a couple weeks
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: ago because they had some really intense wind and heat.
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: I knocked down a lot of those wild flowers. But
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: there's still plenty to see. And it also varies by elevation,
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: so obviously the lowest elevation place has come into super
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: bloom first, followed by the mid and higher elevations, and
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: the higher elevation or where the super bloom will last
- 1:16:41Speaker 4: into early summer. Now, if you live in the area,
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: you can go check it out. I visited Death Valley
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: in twenty twenty three. Like I said, it's one of
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: my favorite parks. It's one of the only parks that
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: has year round dispersed camping. It's got the best stargazing
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: I've ever experienced. It's super remote, so make sure you
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: fill up on gas first and you have a good
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: spare tire uh and take a trip to the racetrack playa.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: You'll see the sailing stones that move on their own,
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: and then of course this year you'll get the rare super.
- 1:17:07Speaker 10: Bloom that's happening.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: Excellent job, Oh thank you. They need to build no
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: website for that, did you?
- 1:17:12Speaker 10: Nope?
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: No, excellent job.
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: It's beautiful, hottest, driest, lowest place on Earth, and almost
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: pretty flowers. Not on Earth, I'm sorry, good good in
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: North America.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: Yeah, inside of Santiago, somewhere around there. The driest place
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: on earth, like the elk chili, sorry and chili, driest
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: place on Earth.
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: Can't even like that, must be less than an inch
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: of precipitation.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: Wow, no, ring disgusting, all right, Max, Over to you
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: North Dakota poachers.
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: All right, So you know how the eighteen eighties had
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: Jesse James and Frank James.
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: Oh.
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, twenty twenty six has Tatum and Tyler Dfoe.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: Oh, going to.
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: My home state, North Dakota, dude, Watford City, North Coda,
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: which is in the northwest part of the state. I
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: would say the remains of over thirty deer, three bowl bull, elk,
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: and even a moose with antlers were found by law
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: enforcement at the residence of a Watford City man who
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: is now under arrest and currently being held at the
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: Southwest Multi County Correction Center in Dickinson, North Dkota.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: Where the hell's getting the moose?
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: I do not know there's moose, the moose, and I
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: took it home.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: With them, or at least the head.
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: This Yeah, this article didn't really say how they got it.
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: It was just like, if it's there, he's got it
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: on his place.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: So, back in December of twenty twenty four, the residents
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: of Taden and Tyler Dufo was being searched by law
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: enforcement on a different warrant. Law enforcement happened to see
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: some untagged heads there and they notified a local game warn.
- 1:18:53Speaker 7: It seems like a lot of poachers get nailed via
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: unrelated charges.
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: Yeah, and then a new search by the North Dkota
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: Game and Fish that lasted about six hours, and then
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: the warden removed the fallen from the residents. Thirty four
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: sets of antlers and heads of white tail and meal deer,
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: two elk heads with antlers so a bowl elk, one
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: moose with antlers so bull moose, and multiple bags meat
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: in a bobcat rug. North Kota Game Warns reach out
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: to surrounding states to see like, hey, do you guys
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: have any licenses take guests Montana? No, no licenses found.
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: Oh, but didn't they have charges in all?
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Yeah, meaning they he can't explain it away by like, oh,
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: I've been hunting all over hell.
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought.
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: They were connected to some stuff in Montana, but maybe not.
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: No.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: In the article I read, the warden reached out to
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: both Montana and South Coota to verify zero big am
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: licenses were found.
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: What's stopping them from just saying they're a bunch of
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: dead head.
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: It's great question.
- 1:20:02Speaker 11: Because I I my buddy brought up this question because
- 1:20:05Speaker 11: he was running around with a new hunter who doesn't
- 1:20:07Speaker 11: know anything about anything, and he was like, I don't
- 1:20:10Speaker 11: want to take this dead head because I don't have
- 1:20:12Speaker 11: a salvage tag for it, and so I thought. I
- 1:20:15Speaker 11: called Montana f WP and they're like, yeah, you don't
- 1:20:17Speaker 11: need a.
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: Salvage tag though. Yeah, but maybe it depends on what
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: state it's in.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: You.
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: It's like if for some reason.
- 1:20:26Speaker 7: A police officer or game warden is on your property
- 1:20:29Speaker 7: and they see a dead head or two dead heads
- 1:20:33Speaker 7: versus finding thirty.
- 1:20:35Speaker 10: Yeah, but I found five this year.
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: I got all sorts of dead heads all over the place.
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: So I think this article when it says elk heads,
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: I think it's like a mounted tax. You know, it's
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: it's not a European mounted dead head. So yeah, going
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: back to this, the maximum penalty for a single class
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: A mister meta under North Dcota law is three hundred
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: and sixty days in prison, a three thousand dollars fine,
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: or both the youngest. The youngest of the two, Tayden,
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: was initially charged with fifteen separate Class A mister meter chargers.
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: Yeah, he's currently being held in Dickinson, North Dkota. I
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: didn't really find much about his older brother, Tyler Dfoe.
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: The article just said he was had nearly identical charges
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: stemming from the same incident got but that was it.
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: I don't know if he's in jail or what's happening.
- 1:21:36Speaker 7: So did they, like, did they tie any of those
- 1:21:40Speaker 7: heads to like known poaching cases they were trying to solve.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Or that I did.
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: This article is very bleak. Yeah, so, and I think
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: it's important to note both the foes are considered into
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: considered innocent until proven guilty. So we'll find out. I'll
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: circle back on this in a couple of weeks and
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: see what happens.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: I know that's a lot of charges, man, Yeah, I.
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: Know they had a couple of court dates here coming up.
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: So Western North d Coota doesn't produce a lot of bull,
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: elk and moose, so.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: That like, you know, wonderbout.
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, there's like bad life like in the
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: bad lands in western North Cota, there's lots of elk,
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: But yeah, having two of those, I think it's like
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: a once in lifetime tag.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: But I wouldn't be I don't know what I'm talking
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: about because I don't know, but I mean, I wouldn't
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: be surprised if it turned out that those weren't local.
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: Yeah, like hopping.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: That's why. That's why they're talking about calling other states.
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: And well, once you cross the state line, doesn't it
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: turn into a whole.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: Other lay violation. Yeah, then it's a federal crime. But yeah,
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: I think that's kind of what peaked my curiosity about it,
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: is that, you know, not that to say that they don't,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: but those are animals not mostly associated there, and the
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: fact that they're calling other states leads you to believe
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: that that's what they're curious about.
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: For sure. We'll find out.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: Okay, Lastly, I just got so, I just recently got
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: a moose harvest report. Okay, looking at moose harvest statistics. Yeah,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: but within this report that I got. I got this
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: other really interesting thing about moose moose in general on
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: our continent, so Canada, United States of America, the moose
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: population in a way that they used to understand moose
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: in a way that they that the evolving understanding of
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: how moose came to be. Now, I'll just do a
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: little trivia. What do you what do you got? What
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: moose do we have here?
- 1:23:39Speaker 7: Shyris and up in northern we have first get whatever
- 1:23:45Speaker 7: they call them.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: Yeah, so you have in moose taxonomy they recognize you
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: have the Yukon moose, which is the biggest, then the
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: Canadian moose, then you have the Shyris moose, and then
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: I think there's another one they call out east, like
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: the Eastern and maybe is there a Labrador too.
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: Newfoundland or labor something like that.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: So these they have these different moose, these different moose
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: branches in moose taxonomy. They used to do this a lot.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: For instance, there used to be I don't know, they
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: used to recognize a dozen.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: Cariboo, seven different kinds of elk or something like that.
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: Seven kinds of elk, dozen cariboo, And they used to
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: think that these things were genetically different. Think about this,
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: the Mexican gray wolf and then the wolf, the regular
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: gray wolf. Okay, so we have these different genetic distinctions,
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: and what you're doing is you when they look at
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: the genome of the species, you usually are when it's valid. Okay,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: Like take let's start with this example. What I'm trying
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: to say, take black tail deer and mule deer. Black
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: tail deer and mule deer are regarded as as legitimately different.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: They're like, that is a legitimate subspeci And what makes
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: it that way is they can see evidence that there
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: was a a serious distinct genetic barrier, meaning there was
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: a time when black tail deer were not able to
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: inter breed. They were physically separated from meal deer at
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: a time. Now they're not. Now they bleed into each other.
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: Like I've pointed this out before, there's places like in California,
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: if a deer is standing on the west side of
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: I five, it's a black tail deer. If it's standing
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: on the east side of I five, it's a meal deer.
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: But when you look at them genetically, you can tell
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: that these two things were different and they were separated.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: What was separating them and all these cases in North America,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: it was what was separating them was like old glaciation,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: so you had glacial barriers that cut animal populations in
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: chunks and so areas where we have these like legitimate subspecies,
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: it was because they were separated. When you look at cariboo,
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: I don't know what a dozen cariboo running around. They
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: now think that there are two legitimate cariboo subspecies, barren
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: ground and woodland. Barren ground were north of the glaciers.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: Woodland survived south of the glaciers. The glaciers go away,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: everything melts. They can intermingle, but they're still like those
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: are legitimate subspecies. For a long time, people thought that
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: the Shyris moose was a subspecies, and there was this
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: idea that it had found refuge south of the Great
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: Ice Sheets and evolved on its own, and these other
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: moose evolved to the north. And I was even unaware
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: that this thinking was changing. But they're doing more and
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: more genetic work, and it's like all these different moose Yukon, Canada.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: Shyris what you when you look at them and you
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: see the differences, all you're seeing is is habitat, like
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: distinct habitat and nutrition.
- 1:27:14Speaker 7: And what's the uh shit, what is it? The thing
- 1:27:18Speaker 7: north to south or south.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: Of principle body size. So like in Bergsman's principle, We've
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: talked this one hundred times. Like Bergsman's principle, if you
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: look at a mammals range, the largest specimens are on
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: the north end of the range, the smallest specimens around
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: the south end of the range. Which fits. So I
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: look at all this stuff like antler configuration of a
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: shiris moose. The Shirif's moose doesn't have different antler configuration,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: it's just smaller. And they they wound up doing this thing.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: I'm looking at this map and its servid fossils in
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: North America over fifteen thousand years. And it's crazy because
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: like over fifteen thousand years you have I'm looking at
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: this map where it's showing caribou fossils coming out of Nebraska.
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:28:04Speaker 7: I was doing some research for the book where they
- 1:28:06Speaker 7: found caribou Tennessee, Alabama, like way down.
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: Well, this is over fifteen thousand years. So I got
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: caribou fossils over in South Carolina, North Carolina, caribou fossils
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: in Nebraska deer fossils southern Florida, just everywhere. Okay, elk
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: fossils down in New Mexico. There is no older than
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: fifteen thousand year moose fossil. The southernmost the southernmost over
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: fifteen thousand year old moose fossil found to date sits
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: at the Alaska Yukon border.
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: So north of the glaciers.
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: Yeah, the other stuff was down right in this matter.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: There's this huge band across central Canada, but there's no
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: fossil it, no fossils from over the time because nothing
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: was there. So you had stuff that was north of it,
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: and stuff was south of it. What you had north
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: of it, you had elk, you had moose, you had cariboo.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: South of it you had deer, you had caribou, you
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: had elk. And so they're saying that like all moose,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: all moose at the end of the ice Age came
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: out of Bringia spread south and there's never been a
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: point when and you did not have genetic barriers. They've
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: always just been like you would start in one place
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: and you'd travel and there'd be moose and you'd slowly
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: realize they look different.
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: Yeah, over time, they just adapted to that habitat.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Nutrition habitat, and they also this this paper also talks
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: a lot about density that like density is impacting size. Yeah,
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: high density, small size.
- 1:29:57Speaker 4: What's wild is they were moving uh down here at
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: the same time humans were.
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: That's the crazy timeline. Yeah, that's that's kind of like
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: it would be that if you always imagine going back,
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: like you want to go back to the Plyceiscene, to
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: the Clovis age, you could be like the first humans
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: that came down out of Bringia and hit the American
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Great Plains. They might have done that faster than they
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: might have been in a moose free environment, and then
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: one day it'd be like, well, there's moose showing.
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: It's that thing.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: Yeah, because the moose came at the same time as humans. Yep.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: I think it's fascinating. The math was cool. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: There were no deer the most this is what's crazy too.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: The most northern deer fossils over fifteen thousand years have
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: come out of like the Prince of Wales Island area.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: So blacktails yep, on the coast, on the coast probably
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: ice free, yep. You had some blacktails on the coast
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: and then It's like you didn't have northern deer and
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: you didn't have southern moose.
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: That's super cool.
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just kind of a changing perspective of why
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: why is a shiris Because when they look at a
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: Shiris moose, they're like, his antlers are smaller, his coat
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: is different colored. There's these other head measurements that are
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: different and you're like, oh, they must have been different, right,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: But it's like it's just how the species was reflected,
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: how the landscape changed the species, how the species adapted
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: to the landscape.
- 1:31:27Speaker 7: Right, It'd be interesting to see what other species will
- 1:31:32Speaker 7: they'll look at and try and follow that same YEP trend,
- 1:31:36Speaker 7: you know.
- 1:31:36Speaker 13: Ye.
- 1:31:37Speaker 4: For size reference, the Boon and Crockett minimum score for
- 1:31:41Speaker 4: a Shiris moose is one. For a Canada moose is
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: one eighty five. There're forty five inch difference, and then
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: for a Yukon moose it's two ten. So this is
- 1:31:51Speaker 4: like a Canada and Yukon are closer and side for
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: like Boone Crockett than shyris in Canada.
- 1:31:57Speaker 7: Boone and Crockett score is kind of weird doing vision
- 1:31:59Speaker 7: with like spread wise, I would say like shyrius good
- 1:32:04Speaker 7: bulls like forty inches wide.
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: If you look at the all time record, the world
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: record for a Canada is two hundred and forty two,
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: for a Shyris is two oh five.
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna make people dig this up themselves. I don't
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: want to tell them, but there is a unit in
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: Montana where the average, the five year average is a
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: forty nine inch with Can you look at most of
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: the units the five year average is down in the
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: upper thirties. There's a decent hot unit. Yeah. And you
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: know what's funny. People know this because it's a low
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: draw odd unit. People figured it out.
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: Everything is zero point one percent change.
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: No, no, not true, okay, not true. Thanks Thanks everybody.
- 1:32:52Speaker 6: When you flew out the wind to the suns said,
- 1:33:00Speaker 6: I thought I would never stop screaming. I thought I
- 1:33:10Speaker 6: would never stop.
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: Screaming your name.
- 1:33:23Speaker 13: But I ran out of breath, so I to again
- 1:33:28Speaker 13: some more, and I started screaming loud.
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: Streaming goes on for a.
- 1:33:46Speaker 12: Day.
- 1:33:53Speaker 6: So if you would not love this, fir, that'll probably
- 1:34:02Speaker 6: be screaming that. I try to be cool here, but
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: inside of screaming, U
