Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Olga Ivshina: BBC Russia Correspondent on the meeting between Putin and Trump
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Confirmation from the Kremlin overnight that a meeting between Trump
- 0:03Speaker 1: and Persian will take place as early as next week.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Time is running out for a six five I deal.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Of course, Trump's threatening oil sanctions on Russia by tomorrow.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Question is will he now wait for the potential meeting? Olga?
- 0:15Speaker 1: If Shina is the BBC Russia correspondent, Olga, welcome to
- 0:19Speaker 1: the program. What do you think will happen?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Oh, that's you know, that's a good question. If I knew,
- 0:25Speaker 2: I guess I would be somewhere else or working somewhere else.
- 0:30Speaker 2: But yeah, the truth is, the things are developing really fast.
- 0:34Speaker 2: But the latest from Trump administration it seems that now
- 0:39Speaker 2: they say that in order for Putting a Trump to meet,
- 0:41Speaker 2: Putting must meet Zelenski. But then earlier today, when Putting
- 0:45Speaker 2: was challenged by reporters if he's ready to meet Zlensky,
- 0:48Speaker 2: he said certain conditions must be fulfilled, and they are
- 0:51Speaker 2: not fulfilled yet, which basically signals that Moscow is not
- 0:55Speaker 2: ready to meet Dansky, which puts the subsequent meeting with
- 0:59Speaker 2: Trump into question. But I doubt that Trump will hit
- 1:03Speaker 2: with tariffs on Friday, bearing in mind the meeting is
- 1:07Speaker 2: so close and possible and his PR so called PR victory,
- 1:11Speaker 2: his possible PR achievement is so close. I don't think
- 1:15Speaker 2: he's going to risk it by introducing tariffs on Friday.
- 1:18Speaker 1: But does that not just show that person is again
- 1:21Speaker 1: stringing Trump alone.
- 1:25Speaker 2: It seems that up to now Moscow has been quite
- 1:29Speaker 2: successful in dragging on in postponing negotiations and in a way, yeah,
- 1:37Speaker 2: playing with Trump's administration on its terms. And we have
- 1:40Speaker 2: seen that Putin has achieved, not too much, but he
- 1:44Speaker 2: has achieved something. Meanwhile, First of all, he managed to
- 1:46Speaker 2: push most of the Ukrainian forces out of the coast
- 1:49Speaker 2: region of Russia after the Ukrainian centersion in twenty twenty four.
- 1:53Speaker 2: He managed to capture a few more little villages in Ukraine.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And yeah, yeah, he seems to have initiative on the FUNCT,
- 2:02Speaker 2: not as much as he wants, but he definitely has
- 2:04Speaker 2: achieved something in this last five six months. While he
- 2:09Speaker 2: tries to pretend he's still open for the peace deal
- 2:11Speaker 2: with Ukraine.
- 2:12Speaker 1: What's going to stop potent? I mean, he's obviously not
- 2:15Speaker 1: scared of more sanctions. He's obviously not scared of Trump
- 2:18Speaker 1: moving as nuclear as subs around.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Oh, it's a good question. I mean, definitely, Russian economy
- 2:25Speaker 2: is not performing marvelously. I mean it it does avoids anxious,
- 2:31Speaker 2: it does evade anxious quite successfully on some fronts. But
- 2:34Speaker 2: on the other front, we see that it's dependence on
- 2:38Speaker 2: the trade with China, it dependence on military equipment from
- 2:42Speaker 2: from North Korea is raising, and there's something which is
- 2:45Speaker 2: mister put not happy about. And of course if Trump
- 2:49Speaker 2: hits with tariffs, it Trumps manages to cut Russian oil
- 2:54Speaker 2: supplies to the global salt, that might hit Russia quite hard.
- 2:59Speaker 2: So definitely mister Puttin will try to avoid that either
- 3:02Speaker 2: we diplomacy all with chess games on the on the
- 3:07Speaker 2: global chess board, but definitely he won't stop, and he
- 3:12Speaker 2: definitely wants to achieve some guarantees of how he sees it,
- 3:17Speaker 2: European security and Russian security how he sees it, which
- 3:21Speaker 2: means promise of NATO, not not not including Ukraine and
- 3:29Speaker 2: basically not not not enlarging to the east.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Oh goat, appreciate your insights as always. O'llgative. China the baby,
- 3:35Speaker 1: says Russia correspondent. For more from earlier edition with Ryan Bridge,
