Latest / Ghost Cult Magazine Podcast / PODCAST: Episode 843 - Who Could Replace Peter Steele in a Type O Negative Tribute Show
Transcript
- 1:03What's up everybody, it's Kefi and I'm back with another ghost.
- 1:06cultnag.com live stream today. We're here to talk about Peter
- 1:09Steele and all the rumors swirling around Type O Negative.
- 1:14I'm sure the remaining living members of Type O Negative would
- 1:17prefer no discussions ever of stuff like this, but at the same
- 1:21time, I can't help but being a huge fan.
- 1:23I wore one of my Type O Negative shirts today.
- 1:26Thank you meth syndicate Type 2 diabetes because I in fact have
- 1:30type 2 diabetes and I love Type O Negative so much.
- 1:33And it is Halloween time and it is spooky season, which means
- 1:36it's Type O Negative season. So we have some news that we
- 1:40were hit with recently. We've also done a couple of
- 1:43recent interviews with both Johnny Kelly and Kenny Hickey
- 1:46about Type O Negative related things or their other projects
- 1:50like Sun Don't Shine and and other things and, and some other
- 1:54goings on in the Type O Negative world, products, reissues,
- 1:59coffee, all these things. And so the conversation is
- 2:03really never dies down. We get asked all the time if I
- 2:06think this band can never come back.
- 2:08I think the short answer is no, because Peter was such a unique
- 2:12and singular talent that he really can't be imitated or
- 2:16replicated. I think the band is putting
- 2:18together a live album they've been talking about right now.
- 2:21It's in the mixing stages. The first we really have ever
- 2:23heard about this. In the last week, we found out
- 2:26about this. And then also a lot of, you
- 2:30know, discussion around whether the band is comfortable ever
- 2:33doing like a tribute concert to Peter with Phil and people.
- 2:36So we'll talk about that in a second.
- 2:39We're bringing in a very special guest, ghost cultist Will Safar,
- 2:42who's going to come in and talk about this because he wrote an
- 2:44article that kind of spurred this whole discussion that you
- 2:49can read today at the Pen Post at ghostcoldman.com.
- 2:52In the meantime, I'll just quickly run through the
- 2:55minutiae. Obviously, I created this little
- 2:58this little slideshow here that always helps me keep on task
- 3:01because if I didn't have everything spoon fed to me, I
- 3:05would forget what the fuck day it is.
- 3:08You know, just a reminder, we've been we do live streams all the
- 3:10time in addition to our regular band interviews and other
- 3:14content we put out weekly. I just didn't have been doing a
- 3:19a weekly series of unveiling new bands for the upcoming debut
- 3:24Mojave Experience Festival in Joshua Tree in March.
- 3:27You can check out that on our channel also wherever you listen
- 3:30to podcasts, also our website. I have my weekly show coming up
- 3:34this Thursday where I recap all the things going on in the week
- 3:37of metal that was this will be part of that discussion, of
- 3:41course. And of course on my other
- 3:43podcasts of literally musical podcast.
- 3:45We just discussed the Life and Times of ace relief kids who
- 3:48passed away. And a whole piece of my
- 3:49childhood is gone, which sucks beyond belief.
- 3:53But you know, what are we going to do?
- 3:55Our heroes are leaving us. Feel free to drop a tip in the
- 3:58tip menu. I'll share that again in a
- 4:00second. And as always, whenever I'm
- 4:03joined by a guest, I always like split up the tips with them if I
- 4:06get any. So it's the beer fund, the weed
- 4:09fund or whatever fund. And so, you know, Peter, you
- 4:15know, how how do you approach something like this?
- 4:18Who are the bands that are inspired the most by Type O
- 4:21Negative? Who is there anyone out there
- 4:23who can come on a stage, pick up a microphone and do justice to
- 4:26Peter? A lot of people have covered
- 4:28Type O Negative. A lot of people tell you they
- 4:30love Type O Negative and then you listen to the music and you
- 4:32don't hear it. I know speculation is rampant
- 4:35and not good. So this conversation is a way to
- 4:38not do speculation, but to wish cast to make an educated wish
- 4:43like Deadpool about like what we would like to see if something
- 4:46like this were to happen. And you know, we love Peter and
- 4:49we love type of negative. And I've personally asked these
- 4:52questions, you know, and, and been smacked down, you know,
- 4:57live in a broadcast in certain cases by Johnny and Kenny.
- 5:00I feel very fortunate. They've been very big supporters
- 5:03of ghost cult. Myself and my partner Omar
- 5:05Cordy, we've interviewed them and hung out with them, quite a
- 5:07lot of FaceTime with them and just really great people.
- 5:11And, you know, I would never want to do anything to besmirch
- 5:14their reputation. They have not told us anything.
- 5:18We don't know anything, at least I don't know anything beyond
- 5:21what I, you know, rumblings everyone else's heart.
- 5:23So with that out of the way, here's like one of the last ever
- 5:26band photos of Typo. I'm sure when Typo was playing
- 5:30their final shows, they didn't think Peter was going to pass
- 5:32away and they were going to not ever come back again.
- 5:35And there has been a lot of type of negative discussion.
- 5:38We have this graphic novel and we have now Type O Negative
- 5:42Coffee, which saw a couple of events this past weekend and in
- 5:45Brooklyn and New Jersey, my friends were at Duffs for the
- 5:47for the coffee lunch with concept cafes where we've
- 5:50interviewed and done a lot of work with and a lot of upcoming
- 5:53taste test videos and things like that.
- 5:54So I wanted to bring in will suffer from ghost cult.
- 5:57He has also contributed this awesome article.
- 6:01Here's Will, here's me. We're going to do the Brady
- 6:03Bunch. We're going to try to do the
- 6:06Brady Bunch. There it is.
- 6:07Took me a minute. Which one is it anyway?
- 6:10Will, how are you? I think I muted you.
- 6:12You can unmute yourself. And thanks for being here.
- 6:15And I hope you're well. Thanks so much.
- 6:17And happy Halloween to you, Sir. Hey, what's up?
- 6:21Yeah, this is this is my big holiday, Halloween, of course.
- 6:26So yes, I'm pretty stoked about it.
- 6:28And it's always, you know, if type of negative is going to
- 6:30drop some news, this is the time to, you know, kind of do it.
- 6:34And yeah, makes sense. Makes sense to me.
- 6:39Right on. I appreciate you being here and
- 6:42I appreciate this this article you wrote.
- 6:44So first and foremost, you know, we, you talked about like, you
- 6:49know, this whole genre of gothic metal and doom and goth kind of
- 6:54overlapping and we've seen a lot of it and a lot and it's become
- 6:56a lot more prominent. So I always say that doom metal,
- 7:00like fans had a catch up to it. It's been around for ages, you
- 7:04know, if you want to trace it back to before and beginning
- 7:07with Black Sabbath. But you know, Type O Negative
- 7:10was his own special thing. They really were a hybrid of
- 7:13these, you know, special kinds of bands and their own filter in
- 7:18which it came through. And it wasn't just Peter,
- 7:20obviously. It's an entire band.
- 7:22First Sal and then Johnny on drums and and Josh's talent and
- 7:26Kenny's talent and vocals and guitar and it was all these
- 7:29things together. Type O Negative does not sound
- 7:32like Carnivore. Type O Negative does not sound
- 7:34like New York hardcore much, just a little bit of strains of
- 7:38it existing still because of who those guys were and the bands
- 7:42they played with. But we don't know anything.
- 7:45We we have heard, we know there's a live album coming in
- 7:482026. It's being mixed now and we know
- 7:51that the band is now open to some kind of tribute concert.
- 7:55Does that mean they're going to go full Pantera, put a band
- 7:58together and go on tour? I don't think so.
- 8:00I've personally spoken to both of those guys, specifically
- 8:04Kenny and Johnny, and they both kind of swore on a stack of
- 8:07bibles or satanic bibles that they would never can't foresee
- 8:12Type O Negative reuniting without Peter.
- 8:14It doesn't seem right. It doesn't feel right.
- 8:17I think it personally hurts Kenny to go play gigs with his
- 8:20other bands and have people yell out Type O Negative songs like
- 8:23he's some trained monkey. I know it hurts his feelings.
- 8:26I know it hurts him like he can't be seen as anything other
- 8:29than Kenny from Type O Negative. I will tell you that Sun Don't
- 8:31Shine is fucking stellar with the guys from Down and and Kenny
- 8:35and Johnny. I love Silver Tomb in addition
- 8:39to be, you know, loving the band and having interviewed them for
- 8:42that project, help run a silver tomb Facebook page.
- 8:46So like I'm into it, right. This is a band that's my in my
- 8:49wheelhouse and I saw a typho negative like 10 times.
- 8:52I could have seen them 100 times.
- 8:53They played New York City so much when I was growing up.
- 8:57I could have like went every week to see them and seen them
- 9:00somewhere in the tri-state area and I saw them just a few
- 9:03handfuls of times and one of those was an Oz fest for like 20
- 9:06minutes. So you know, I do miss the band.
- 9:09I miss Peter. He was lovely.
- 9:11I met him once. He was very close with my
- 9:14co-owner Omar Cordy used to call his house and talk to him and
- 9:17his mom all the time. He would give Omar advice.
- 9:19But Omar's fledgling bands. So I don't, I don't know that
- 9:23type of negative is going to do a full on.
- 9:26We're going to put the band back together with somebody or
- 9:28somebody's, but before we get into a tribute concert on paper
- 9:33and who we would recruit to be part of it.
- 9:36What are your thoughts about Type O Negative?
- 9:38Like, why do you what do you love about Type O Negative?
- 9:40Why do you think they have this endearing quality that people
- 9:44continue to love the band so much?
- 9:46Yeah, Type O Negative. I mean, they've been one of my
- 9:48favorite bands since I got slipped deep and hard, you know,
- 9:52some some back in the 90s. They're because they kind of
- 9:56married what I like about metal with what I like about goth.
- 10:01But that was like, even even before we got the Bloody Kisses,
- 10:06it was still darker, you know, And then it was around that
- 10:10time, like I've heard Carnivore before they had gotten, you
- 10:15know, on some metal radio shows that I've I've listened to over
- 10:20the years. And so they were in my
- 10:22periphery, but I didn't really start checking them out till I
- 10:24got slow, deep and hard. And then once Bloody Kisses came
- 10:31out, I think that that just kind of changed the game.
- 10:33And, you know, even it's kind of funny because we were talking
- 10:36about, you know, how all the different aspects of what Peter
- 10:40Steele does and what they did as a band, really, you know, they
- 10:44never made the same album twice. And it was a constant evolution,
- 10:48which is almost like one of the heroes, The Beatles, you know,
- 10:52in that fact. And I think that even comparing
- 10:55any band to The Beatles is a testament to how great they
- 10:58were. You know, me and Reza were doing
- 11:01our top five goth albums and I said, you know, I would have to
- 11:06pick October Rust because Bloody Kisses is more of a doom album
- 11:14and that they gradually progressed.
- 11:18But they didn't try to make another Bloody Kisses, They
- 11:21didn't try to make another October Rust.
- 11:23They just did what was natural and cared about songs, you know?
- 11:30And I think that's what made them so enduring, you know?
- 11:35Yeah, I appreciate all that. And yeah, I it's it's hard not
- 11:40to have been come of age in the 80s and 90s and not feel that
- 11:44vibe. Type O Negative was, if before
- 11:46Slipknot, the Pinnacle Roadrunner Records band.
- 11:49They were the most successful band on the label.
- 11:51They were the first platinum band they had.
- 11:54And then Slipknot and then Nickelback, unfortunately, and
- 11:56other things. But you know, I remember seeing
- 11:59Carnivore and being like, then they don't want people to like
- 12:03them. I saw Carnivore open for
- 12:04Croman's, like the Harley, only Croman's right, no JJ.
- 12:08And so the best wishes. Croman's right, which was like
- 12:12maybe my first Croman show, probably in like 888990 and I
- 12:18and then Type O came later and I was like, oh, it's the carnivore
- 12:21guy because who else looks that big and giant and hulking?
- 12:24You would remember him, you know, you'd remember who he was
- 12:27if he came in a room, you wouldn't forget him.
- 12:29And I remember seeing the Type O guys like I would go, you know,
- 12:33chaperone my, my female platonic friends to the bank and golf
- 12:38clubs in New York City. And, you know, me and my metal
- 12:42dudes were just kind of like, hanging at the bar and drool
- 12:45over girls that would never talk to us and make sure that nobody
- 12:47roofied my friends and make sure they got home safe if they went
- 12:50home with somebody else. You know, like very disapproving
- 12:54dad vibes. No wonder no one's going to talk
- 12:57to me. I'm acting like a dad and
- 12:59feeling like a dad in this club. But you know, I always had a
- 13:02kinship to the music. And yeah, it's perfectly,
- 13:07perfectly melded do metal and goth.
- 13:09And I agree with you about October Rust and I think it's
- 13:11interesting that they didn't try to either remake Bloody Kisses
- 13:16or October Rust again. Like those were time capsules of
- 13:20the band then and at that time and you know, based on, you
- 13:24know, obviously they were the biggest selling band on that
- 13:27little label at the time that also had bypass or life of agony
- 13:30supple to her Fear Factory, right.
- 13:32All these Pinnacle Machine had all these important to me bands
- 13:35at least and probably a lot of other people, but they also
- 13:38didn't try to recreate that ever again.
- 13:40They just kept doing what they did and moved down the line, you
- 13:44know, a little bit and easily could have cashed in and kept
- 13:48redoing that. But that wouldn't have been true
- 13:50to who they were. And I think the authenticity is
- 13:52the thing that people love about this band.
- 13:55Not just the diversity, but that authenticity that so few bands
- 13:58have and are able to maintain throughout.
- 14:01You know, it's unfortunate that we only got that, you know, 15
- 14:05years of the band, less than 20 years of the band and not much
- 14:09more. But you know that that's kind of
- 14:12what we were left with. Right, for sure.
- 14:16And, you know, I think that a lot of that authenticity comes
- 14:18from their background in hardcore, you know, because
- 14:22hardcore is all about being authentic, you know, so I can
- 14:29see where that kind of work ethic and not selling out
- 14:35definitely played to their favor and made them a longer lasting
- 14:40band because of that. Like, you know, just think about
- 14:44how many bands were huge and had big moments, but then after the
- 14:51big out selling album, the next album was a flop because they
- 14:55just tried to, you know, remake that and it was just watered
- 14:58down, you know, and I think people can feel sincerity and
- 15:06that that has a soul to it, you know.
- 15:10So I don't know that that's how I kind of see them as being
- 15:13endearing is because of they stuck their guns.
- 15:17They did. They stayed true to themselves
- 15:20and and all great bands that you know follow that path seem to
- 15:25have a longer shelf life. Right on.
- 15:30So now let's jump into this article a little bit before we
- 15:33wish cast a dream tribute concert lineup because again, I
- 15:38really don't. I have some thoughts about like,
- 15:42you know, this again, I'm I'm on the record as saying I don't see
- 15:46a full return to this band. It doesn't make sense for them.
- 15:48I think it's just not feasible emotionally.
- 15:51And and again, that authenticity wouldn't be there, but you wrote
- 15:55about some kinship bands or just some bands that are recommended
- 15:59listening to you, right? You have an amazing year bands
- 16:03too, you know, like, so I get a lot of record labels and stuff
- 16:07like that saying, Oh, you're the goth guy.
- 16:09Can you write about this band, this band, this band?
- 16:12And you know, for me, and this goes back to integrity and like,
- 16:18kind of like what you were saying about how, you know, we
- 16:22we only work with people that we feel good about and we have
- 16:26certain standards of what we do. You know, we might not be
- 16:29rolling in the money, but we're rolling in integrity.
- 16:31So I sometimes have to draw a line and say, listen, I'm more
- 16:39than happy to cover this. Bam.
- 16:40But I'm not going to tell people their Goths when they're playing
- 16:44metal. I mean that that would make my
- 16:46word seem untrusting. And I like to think that, you
- 16:52know, that I'm always, if nothing else, I, I give people
- 16:56my honest opinion. And if my opinion becomes
- 17:00dishonest, then what's the point, You know?
- 17:05But I think there's a space for everybody.
- 17:07And I think that, you know, it's important to show that while all
- 17:17these legacy bands are cool, I think that there's a lot of
- 17:21other music that gets overlooked too.
- 17:24You know, like I love typo negative, always listen to him.
- 17:27But there's also been some pretty good albums that I think
- 17:31that, you know, can get overlooked.
- 17:34I think a case in point, although this is outside of the
- 17:37article with man Dax Riggs had an awesome solo album that came
- 17:41out in January. February their reunion tour got
- 17:48announced and now the Focus Acid Bath's great, one of my favorite
- 17:53bands. But you know, that Dax Riggs
- 17:56album needs to get more props. So yeah, I think there's some
- 18:01bands that are kind of picking up where type of negative lift
- 18:04off. I mean, even the stuff that, you
- 18:07know, guys like Johnny are doing that patriarchs and Black album
- 18:11is really good. You know, I didn't mention it in
- 18:13that article because it's a doom album, but I think it shows that
- 18:18these guys, even without Peter, were solid musicians that are
- 18:23just still carrying on. And if nothing else, the spirit
- 18:30of like quality music, you know, is, is what they're upholding
- 18:36rather than just just being about the legacy of type of
- 18:39negative, which I think that that kind of stands on its own 2
- 18:43legs. You know, it doesn't need them
- 18:45to prop it up. So, yeah, so I think that, you
- 18:50know, we're talking about bands like, you know, Black Cross
- 18:53Hotel. They, you know, even though
- 18:55they're a little more industrial, that's a great
- 18:57album. That Scorpion Milk album is
- 19:00fantastic. The guys from Great Pleasures,
- 19:04you know, got neat from Converge playing bass on it.
- 19:08It's, you know, not to be overlooked.
- 19:11So, yeah, I think that, and that's what keeps the scene or
- 19:18goth music alive, is, you know, we got to give all these other
- 19:24people a chance too. And I think that they're worth
- 19:27mentioning in the same, I guess, breath, you know, when we're
- 19:33taking this into consideration. OK, we got a possible Peter
- 19:38Steele tribute. That's cool.
- 19:40But I mean, let's also talk about what's going on now and
- 19:44then we can look at, you know, paying tribute to the past.
- 19:48We got to look forward and honor what's behind us.
- 19:52And I think that's what makes metal have such a lasting legacy
- 19:57too. Why it has such a die hard fan
- 19:59base is because everybody's like dedicated to the past.
- 20:04Bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, everybody
- 20:08that like came before. There's that honoring that
- 20:12lineage. While still, you know, being
- 20:15open for bands like, you know, whoever is coming out with a new
- 20:20out sanguished Sugar Bog, whoever, you know, like those
- 20:26guys will admit that they wouldn't be here if it wasn't
- 20:28for Slayer, you know. So yeah, we we got to keep that
- 20:33balance. And I think that it's a lot of
- 20:35the bands that I wrote about were bands are certainly more on
- 20:39the underground and not, you know, they're not getting the
- 20:45buzz on some bigger, you know, you're not seeing them on the
- 20:50cover of Metal Hammer. Noted.
- 20:55Noted. It's pretty interesting.
- 20:59You you did, Matt. Yeah, you mentioned I love Matt
- 21:04McNerney. I love Great Pleasures and every
- 21:07Beast Milk and every band he's ever been in actually, you know,
- 21:14every different flavor of every band he's ever had.
- 21:17New Paradise Lost album Ascension is incredible.
- 21:20New November's Dune record is is stellar.
- 21:25I don't know that those are guys that would come in and be part
- 21:28of a thing like this. Maybe it's too out of, you know,
- 21:31far afield for them. I think Nick would be a terrific
- 21:36choice actually. You you definitely hit it out of
- 21:40the park with some of these non conventional choices.
- 21:43And I do want to run down the list, but before that, just in
- 21:47general, just cause it's Halloween.
- 21:49Beside obviously typo and some of these other games, what is
- 21:53some of your, you know, favorite Halloween listening?
- 21:56You know what do you listen to? I'll tell you, it really doesn't
- 22:01differ than when I listen to the rest of the year.
- 22:04I feel like Halloween's just where everybody's on the same
- 22:06page as me, you know? So it's the stuff like, I mean,
- 22:12today I've been listening to New Soul Flying, which is not, you
- 22:16know, necessarily that although it's darker than their last
- 22:20album, the one, I guess one album that stands out that I've
- 22:24been listening to in kind of that mood is the new album by
- 22:27Patriarchy, which is a kind of Electro, not quite industrial,
- 22:33but looking in that direction. That album has been kind of
- 22:38consuming my playlist lately. So that's what's getting me in
- 22:43the mood so far. The new, new Peter Murphy is
- 22:45great. I've pulled that album back out.
- 22:49He sounds spectacular. I'm stoked that Gary Newman
- 22:54announced a new tour. So I've been going back and
- 22:57let's digging into some Gary Newman.
- 22:58So, you know, so I still and it's like anything else, I love
- 23:02the the goth classics, but at the same time, you know, I've
- 23:08heard pornography 10,000 times. So it's good to give albums like
- 23:14that Scorpion Milk a listen. Or, you know, listen to
- 23:17Patriarchy. You can only listen to that, you
- 23:21know those 3 or 4 ministry albums so many times.
- 23:24But also I don't get tired of those either.
- 23:27And I do love Gary Newman and so much more.
- 23:30There's a bunch of vows. Just spit out a banger new
- 23:32album, the Tron soundtrack. Tron Air is for 9 channels.
- 23:36Incredible. I actually just saw that.
- 23:38That might be like my next live stream.
- 23:40Unless something major breaks this week outside Halloween, I
- 23:44might do one on that. I really almost would like to go
- 23:48see it again. I liked it so much.
- 23:49I'm so sad it's getting drubbed in the theaters and no one's
- 23:53people are not going to movies anymore.
- 23:55It's hard to. Convince I want to see the new
- 23:57Frankenstein before I see that. Yes, fair enough.
- 24:00And I missed the new Wolfman movie earlier this year that I
- 24:04needed. That's a shame for me because.
- 24:06I'm such a good one. It was OK, Not OK, not great.
- 24:10OK, I'm into it. And then Edgars is doing the
- 24:12Frankenstein too, right? Edgars is doing another werewolf
- 24:16movie. Oh, another werewolf.
- 24:18Called the werewolf. I can't wait.
- 24:23He's so cold, you know? He's yeah, he's great.
- 24:26I yeah, I would love for him to have like a David Fincher like
- 24:31career later where he gets like super famous and acclaimed, but
- 24:35and maybe he can make his movies in his universe.
- 24:39I think Marvel should bring him on for the next Thor movie I'd.
- 24:42Be sick. Dude all the Thor movies have
- 24:44been too Spacey and not enough dungeons and Dragons and I
- 24:47think. I.
- 24:48He would bring the D&D. You and I separated at Berkeley
- 24:54Brothers from other mothers. So let's let's go back to your
- 24:59SO I'm going to say again, typo negative is not panterm.
- 25:02They did not. They didn't, they.
- 25:04Typo, negative. Absolutely missed by the current
- 25:07generation of young metal fans and music fans and goth fans.
- 25:10Absolutely beloved, absolutely treasured.
- 25:14Several 9:50 banger albums. You can argue about which ones
- 25:18those are. I have mine, you have yours.
- 25:22I don't think they were as big as Pantera before, nor would
- 25:26they be now. I think the best case scenario
- 25:29is to get, you know, new love on these reissues.
- 25:34New a live album, maybe a live DVD, Blu-ray video, on demand
- 25:39concert that people have not ever really seen except YouTube.
- 25:42Poorly recorded YouTube's on people's fucking dumb devices.
- 25:47And I really don't believe that typo Negative should or will
- 25:50ever reform with another singer or other singers and go be on a
- 25:54tour. I think the best you can hope
- 25:55for would be a one off. And by the way, Johnny Kelly in
- 26:01particular does not need the money because his gig with Quiet
- 26:04Riot is so lucrative. He does not need to work except
- 26:08for that. Like he, he works because he
- 26:10wants to work. He makes new music because he
- 26:12wants to. He does collaborative projects
- 26:14and jumps on people's records. Like if Danzig called them up
- 26:17and said I'm never going to tour again, but would you like to
- 26:19help make a new Danzig record with me?
- 26:21I know he would answer the call. We I've asked him that.
- 26:23So like that, I would love to see I, I, I think Johnny works
- 26:28because he wants to, he makes enough money with Quiet Riot,
- 26:31you know, carrying Frankie Minali's legacy.
- 26:33Never has to do that again. Kenny is a working guy.
- 26:36He's a working class dude like us.
- 26:38And I think he will always have a hand in music.
- 26:42And he also provides for his family.
- 26:43So like it would have to be astronomically lucrative for
- 26:47those two guys to do something for money.
- 26:49One, because one guy doesn't really need has that thing
- 26:52already. And the other guy, I don't think
- 26:53he would sell out his integrity for the money ever.
- 26:56And that's my word. I know Kenny personally and
- 26:58that's what I believe in my heart of hearts.
- 27:00And I think Josh is done, done, done.
- 27:02I don't, I really, I cannot see him coming out of retirement
- 27:08even for a show. I think he's done.
- 27:12I don't think he would play my personal.
- 27:16What do you think? I mean, it would be nice to have
- 27:20him, if nothing else for them backing vocals, you know, maybe
- 27:26if they told him it was a one off thing, who knows?
- 27:32But yeah, I totally agree. I mean, I would even be open for
- 27:34like a Nativity in Black style tribute album, you know?
- 27:40But yeah, no tour and, you know, kind of jumping the gun a little
- 27:46bit when we get into picks. You know, I think that it should
- 27:49be very rooted in New York and that's why I picked a lot of New
- 27:55Yorkers on the front end of that because I think there's a lot of
- 28:00guys and and some of those bands that could help uphold that
- 28:04legacy, one in particular. But yeah, I mean, I think that
- 28:14it would be for a love of thing and kind of a for the love of
- 28:18the fans type thing, you know? And it's one of those things
- 28:22like, so I'm pretty good friends with Sammy.
- 28:27And, you know, he was saying, I'll talk to him, like go to her
- 28:31gigs. And he would be like, Oh yeah,
- 28:33nobody cared about us when we were around.
- 28:39I'd be like, dude, you need to like, no, you need to like kind
- 28:43of recheck out what's going on because there's a whole new
- 28:48audience for you guys. And I think that ask about has a
- 28:50similar thing to Typo as in their absence.
- 28:56The Internet has helped people check out music that, you know,
- 29:02it hasn't been forgotten about and there's a whole new fan base
- 29:04for which, you know, I don't know that those are the 2 bands
- 29:09that I would have, even though they're two of my favorite
- 29:11bands. I would not have suspected that
- 29:13that's what kids would be getting into.
- 29:15But you know, somehow the universe works in better ways
- 29:20than I can imagine. I know people are asking me
- 29:23questions about like before Acidab did these shows, like
- 29:26people were just on my shit about them.
- 29:28Like I can't believe you saw them and this and that.
- 29:30And again, I love that Dax Riggs record, absolute top 10 from a
- 29:34spoiler alert, absolute top ten pick for me this year.
- 29:37And I would like Dax to do that stuff more and I'm glad.
- 29:40I mean, make that money. If you're going to come back for
- 29:43all the right reasons and get money you never got before,
- 29:47absolutely go do it and do it. You know, go open for system of
- 29:51a down in Europe because people never saw estimate there and
- 29:54they're going to do headline tours and and open for system.
- 29:58That's insane. It's insane and great in the
- 30:00best way. Like this is what the music
- 30:02business should be. You should get it paid forward
- 30:05to you now if you made great art back then and just got
- 30:07overlooked or not paid or whatever.
- 30:11So now you have your top ten list in no particular order as
- 30:15you say. I'm going to also have some
- 30:17other ones I'm going to throw at you after you did say before we
- 30:20go do this list, there are people that should absolutely
- 30:24not be. Was one of them 7 second songs
- 30:32Guy Vincent? Oh yeah, no, no Youtubers.
- 30:36Come on, he's great. Though he can, he's a great
- 30:40vocalist and he does great. He loves Typo, I think.
- 30:43Yeah, no, no Youtubers. And you said like?
- 30:46That's like Andy Warhol's version of karaoke, you know, is
- 30:50just the whole Internet thing like that.
- 30:53And, you know, I think there's a difference between doing an
- 30:56impersonation in like, I think if you had somebody like Keith
- 31:03Caputo doing it, he wouldn't be trying to mimic Peter Steele.
- 31:11It would be their interpretation of that, you know.
- 31:16So that's the next thing you these are, I consider these
- 31:19separate things. So we could be talking about a
- 31:21tribute concert. I think to make this happen, to
- 31:25pull everyone together. I think the way to do this is in
- 31:28a festival setting. Like if Metal Injection or
- 31:31Brethren does another Metal Injection Fest in New York or
- 31:34Decibel Metal and Beer Fest in Philly, it's on the East Coast.
- 31:37Maybe it would line up with everybody a year from now or
- 31:41seven months from now or whenever.
- 31:43So on one hand there's a part of me that's like, I only want
- 31:46underground metal people to be part of it because originally
- 31:48that was the ethos of type of. On the other hand, if you really
- 31:52wanted to get its flowers, you need kind of name brand people,
- 31:55popular people. So like you, you, I know that
- 31:59Loudwire asked Lacuna Coil, who I saw earlier in the year.
- 32:04And I do love and I have had great experiences with how much
- 32:07they loved Peter. And they're like, oh, we would
- 32:09love to do a type of negative song or maybe if there's ever a
- 32:12show or do one of his songs in concert.
- 32:16And you were like, absolutely fucking no.
- 32:19I love, I love that about you. Yeah, I mean, if, if there are
- 32:23going to be female vocals that do it, I mean, I think Chelsea
- 32:25Wolf's a fair pick. I think.
- 32:32Yeah, I guess so. I'll go with her.
- 32:35That'll be my, yeah, my my pick 'cause just 'cause she has a
- 32:39lower end Alto to her voice. I'm afraid if Lacuna Coyle did
- 32:44it, that the the male singer would get up there.
- 32:47And I like, like Coma Lilies. I like that album a lot, you
- 32:52know, so I respect what they do. But yeah, as far as like
- 32:58capturing the emotional quality, I think is the most important
- 33:03thing, you know? I just think I.
- 33:06Just think, and I think he can do that too, you know?
- 33:09Yeah. I agree.
- 33:10I agree. But I do think like there's that
- 33:12industry thing where they're going to try to get named
- 33:15people. So they're that's the the the
- 33:18scales, right? Is it like name people versus
- 33:20people would actually do just? I mean, they're singers that I
- 33:23love and bands that I love that have darker qualities, but like,
- 33:28I would not want to hear health do a type of negative song, even
- 33:31though all of that is. Correct, Jake is great and I do
- 33:34love health. Not at all in my place.
- 33:37Understood. So let's go through your list
- 33:39and do a few pros and cons and your rationale on each and I'll
- 33:43give some feedback. And then I have a little list to
- 33:45read back to you that I put together that will not, you
- 33:48know, this is your article, it's your feature.
- 33:50You're going to. I'm going to run it the way you
- 33:51sent it. Yeah, I think you can.
- 33:53In front of me. So you pop them out and I will.
- 33:56So yeah, so the aforementioned Keith Caputo of Life of Agony.
- 34:02No new Peter Friends with Peter, Sir Peter proteges, if you will.
- 34:07Josh produced the debut river runs red.
- 34:12Keith and Peter were very close. Allen and and Joey were also
- 34:15like they're all close and they shared, you know, shared
- 34:17members, Sal right. So what do you think about why?
- 34:21Why Keith number one with a bully?
- 34:24Well, Keith, I mean, you know, has that emotional vulnerability
- 34:29to his voice while still being able to I mean, maybe not as low
- 34:36of a register as Peter, but Abel, like I could see Keith
- 34:41doing Christian woman. I could, I could hear that, you
- 34:49know, maybe not my girlfriend's girlfriend, but I could hear
- 34:54them doing that, you know, so able to put some grit in the boy
- 35:04could, could even do some of the slow, deep and hard stuff.
- 35:07Even though I think that if you were going to go there and do
- 35:10the older hardcore stuff, there are plenty of singers.
- 35:16Like I brought up the guy from Jumping Ahead, the guy from Age
- 35:19of Apocalypse, I think would be capable of doing that.
- 35:23You know, I've seen lists where people had said Danzig and that
- 35:27is ridiculous. Not that I don't love Danzig,
- 35:32but you know, and I know they toured with the I saw him open
- 35:36up for dancing before. I have some thoughts I have, I
- 35:42have some thoughts. So let's not go on.
- 35:45Let's just keep it to your list for.
- 35:46Now, yeah, yeah, yeah. You're letting you come in with
- 35:48my feedback. I, I think again, Danzig is a
- 35:52big name artist who would make a lot of people would want to hear
- 35:54Danzig sing Type O Negative songs.
- 35:56Danzig has done covers of a lot of other bands, although usually
- 36:00ancient bands and Elvis and yeah, I I so I'm talking about
- 36:06like Type O Negative plus maybe an All Star band of other people
- 36:10and and someone to play keyboards cause no, Josh
- 36:12probably and then new singers. That's the idea I have here.
- 36:16As opposed to life of agony covering Type O Negative,
- 36:19Biohazard covering Type O Negative, Lacuna Coil covering
- 36:23Type O Negative for an album they would a record company
- 36:26would be trying to sell, right. So I'm not talking about that.
- 36:28I'm talking about a tribute concert And who would cavalcade
- 36:32of singers could be that would be a good idea and not besmirch
- 36:35their name and and tarnish the Rep So Caputo a much agreed.
- 36:40I I love life of agony and think that that's a natural one to one
- 36:45right. Then you have a real surprise to
- 36:49probably anybody not named me Henry Fonda pissed on as a
- 36:53bandit does not get talked about that.
- 36:55I love that should have been as big as life of agony and
- 36:59biohazard and type of negative and just never broke through
- 37:02beyond. I mean, they were like harangue
- 37:04big 30 years ago. They were regionally big in the
- 37:08New York City area. They were popular enough.
- 37:11Valium had a column in in, I think Harangue and Metal Hammer
- 37:15and Henry, who is still out there, they're still doing stuff
- 37:18here and there, occasionally shows occasional albums, right?
- 37:21Henry's a great artist and does not get enough respect, so I
- 37:25love you putting that respect on his name.
- 37:28And I think he could pull it off, you know, also it wasn't on
- 37:34the list, but in that kind of vein of bands that maybe weren't
- 37:39as big name. And his name is eluding me right
- 37:43now, although I know it is the singer from only Living Witness
- 37:47I could also see. Him, Jonah.
- 37:51Yeah, Jonah. I love all those Massachusetts
- 37:55metal core bands, Overcast and and Only Living Witness.
- 38:00And it's it's almost November. It's not quite December yet, but
- 38:05aha, you see what I did there? But anyway, Jonah, Jonah's a
- 38:10little out there, but so is Keith.
- 38:14Yeah, he definitely has the vocals.
- 38:17I love the third pick, Brett Campbell, a Paul band.
- 38:20Not only have they covered Type O Negative, Brett has talked
- 38:23extensively about his love of Type O Negative, the inspiration
- 38:27that Type O Negative has given him, and the rest of that band
- 38:31have covered Love You to Death already.
- 38:34Beautifully sung. He's got a great voice and
- 38:36they've kind of turned kind of away from the doom metal into
- 38:41kind of a heavy metal torchbearer or modern heavy
- 38:44metal in a way that I really love.
- 38:47And yeah, what a great pick that is.
- 38:51I I love that dude. Yeah, he just makes sense.
- 38:53I mean, they're a little shoegazy now, but I could even,
- 38:56you know, you I I was thinking about who could sing.
- 38:59Although we've heard him do love it to death.
- 39:01It would be interesting to hear him seeing, you know, something
- 39:03from like dead again or I know some of the songs that don't get
- 39:08as much love as the the big hits.
- 39:11I mean, obviously you'd want to have those songs, too if it's,
- 39:15you know, we're talking a concert setting.
- 39:18You got to keep the crowd moving.
- 39:19So I think you're going to have to do those.
- 39:22But yeah, maybe throw in a couple that you wouldn't expect.
- 39:26Couldn't you just see Brett doing tripping a blind man?
- 39:29And I don't want to be me absolutely nailing it like,
- 39:34'cause, you know, also, like, I love, I love when guitar guys
- 39:37have to not have a guitar on for a minute and they have to hold
- 39:39the microphone or sing into a mic stand and they're all like
- 39:43Ricky Bobby. I don't know what to do with my
- 39:44hands. I mean, you can double up the
- 39:47guitar parts or you can get some of these guitar players to try
- 39:50playing bass. I mean, I'm sure he could pull
- 39:53it off. For sure, for sure. 4th pick on
- 39:56the list Genius Dacterins, as you mentioned before.
- 40:00Unlikely because this is a guy who has hated the music industry
- 40:04and anything with a whiff of impropriety or to do something
- 40:08to cause Salaam or he would probably be like fuck all this.
- 40:12But I bet he loves Peter. I bet he loves Type O Negative.
- 40:15You know that Sammy loves Type O Negative.
- 40:17If this was at a matter, you know, like a decibel medal and
- 40:22beer fest, I'm sure Acid Bath is going to get asked to headline
- 40:25one of these things sooner or later to do all of Scream to the
- 40:28Butterfly. Again, don't know if Dax would
- 40:30be into it, but he would be such an inspired choice and he
- 40:33absolutely has the voice and the range.
- 40:36Right, yeah. I was envisioning him doing, you
- 40:41know, something like too late, Frozen.
- 40:44You know, that was the song I was hearing him sing in my head.
- 40:50Right on, I love it. I think he could do any of them
- 40:53honestly. Like crown them.
- 40:55His dark Americana stuff sounds like the chiller moments of the
- 40:59Type O Negative goth light. I think the doomier, heavier
- 41:03stuff. He absolutely can do some of
- 41:05that stuff. I know you're fucking someone
- 41:06else, you know, kill all the white people.
- 41:09Like he absolutely could do it. He absolutely could do it.
- 41:14That choice. Another one that another person
- 41:16I have interviewed and talked extensively about Type O
- 41:20Negative with this Kirk Winstein of Crowbar and not typically the
- 41:25voice you would associate with the Type O Negative type, but I
- 41:29think he would put his own spin on any Type O Negative song.
- 41:32He absolutely could play and sing all the Type O Negative
- 41:35stuff and you know that he's already like 6° of separation of
- 41:39P duration because he's in Sun Don't Shine with Johnny and
- 41:42Kenny. Right.
- 41:45And, you know, crowbar, we're starting to get into, you know,
- 41:51if not bigger names, names that are certainly respected in metal
- 41:55circles, you know? Indeed, indeed, and I feel like
- 42:01Crowbar will have time to do some.
- 42:04You know, again, makes sense for a festival show type of thing or
- 42:08an All Star show. They also can do an they can do
- 42:11an opening spot. Here's another one.
- 42:14I absolutely love Aaron Staindorp of formerly of My
- 42:17Dying Bride. I hate saying that sentence and
- 42:19currently of is it I parasite right.
- 42:24It's other band now. We just covered opening for
- 42:28Paradise Lost in Europe. And he is first of all, he's a
- 42:33guy that will do vocals for anything.
- 42:35He's a a a man of 1000 voices and faces.
- 42:39Fun fact, for those of you who love some death doom, you can
- 42:43check out Grief Symposium featuring former Ghost Cultist
- 42:48Senior Editor Emeritus Stephen Toby on vocals.
- 42:52And Aaron gets on that last Grief Symposium record and he
- 42:57did quite a great job. So yeah, what would you love to
- 43:02hear Aaron do at that type? Of oh, I mean, you know, any I
- 43:05think he would be a pick for some of the some of the October
- 43:13Ross stuff I think would work for him.
- 43:15You know, I could, I could hear him singing be my Druid.
- 43:17It's pretty easily. Nice.
- 43:21And maybe Wolf Moon. Yeah.
- 43:25And then here's a real surprise. But not a surprise if you've
- 43:28read Will's work with Ghost Cult hangman's chair Cedric Tufuti.
- 43:32I hope I said that right. Watch out Cody, maybe, I don't
- 43:37know, got a great range, great vocal talent.
- 43:41Not everybody's cup of tea for that band, but clearly would be
- 43:46able to do justice to the work, right?
- 43:48Right. And they have, they're kind of
- 43:50curing that vibe forward. I think, you know, like I used
- 43:54to have a type of negative shirt that had like all these like
- 43:59nooses and stuff on it and that kind of tongue in cheek pro
- 44:04suicide vibe. It's definitely what hangman's
- 44:08chair is carrying forward. And that's kind of the emotional
- 44:13message of type of -2 is that if we, if we weren't laughing about
- 44:18this, we would be crying about it.
- 44:20So here's how we get that out, you know, And I think it's even
- 44:26that might even be how fans like Type of Negative and Acid Bath
- 44:31to another extent resonate with kids today is because, you know,
- 44:36there's a lot of kids that are having mental health struggles
- 44:39and that is very honestly covered in type of negative
- 44:45songs. Even though Peter's kind of
- 44:47making fun of himself about it. He is opening up and talking
- 44:50about it, which was not happening a lot in the 90s.
- 44:55Only Type of Negative and Life of Agony were really.
- 44:59I mean that first Life of Agony album is just so heavy because
- 45:04of the subject matter. The lyrics to that hit you as
- 45:07hard as the riffs. You know it.
- 45:10Is 1,000,000 Nervous breakdowns of my 1,000,000 nervous
- 45:13Breakdowns of my early 20s Lusted 2230240252 53 You asked
- 45:20me another somewhat surprise choice.
- 45:23You mentioned him earlier, Dylan Kaplowitz of Age of Apocalypse.
- 45:27Not just a killer band, but one of my favorite storylines ever
- 45:30from the X-Men comics. So a very cool main band.
- 45:33For those that are not familiar with Dylan, why do you you know
- 45:36what attracted you to that band? And because it's a way that he
- 45:40kind of blends his chest register when he belts it out
- 45:44and is capable of hitting those higher, more motive notes, you
- 45:49know. So I think that that would
- 45:55really work to capture it because even though, you know,
- 45:59Peter had a sensitive side, he was definitely very punchy with
- 46:05his vocals when he needed to be. So it's having that balance, you
- 46:09know. Right on.
- 46:11And then another singer, maybe top 20 band for me, top 15 band
- 46:17ever for me over Christopher Rig from over what a turnover has
- 46:24made this last decade. Depeche Mode over.
- 46:28I like to call them and rightly so.
- 46:31Just re listen to Assassination of Julius Caesar with my partner
- 46:35last weekend, weekend before this past 1.
- 46:38And I love that you ask not a question of whether he could
- 46:41pull it off, but would he want to come to America just for
- 46:44that? Right.
- 46:45Because it's so much money to come over right now from From.
- 46:48Scandinavian and can you get a visa?
- 46:50You know, that's that's the thing.
- 46:53So there's some logistical things that would be a case of
- 46:56maybe it's an album thing, you know?
- 46:59Right, but Oliver would be a such an inspired choice to do a
- 47:04typo song. They should anyway.
- 47:06Like you know what? If there's no tribute album and
- 47:08no tribute show ever? Oliver, please go do this
- 47:10anyway. I'm begging you.
- 47:12And another, you know, another singer that I can kind of see
- 47:16tagged on like as a second choice if you can't get him,
- 47:19who's American and has a project does something similar to
- 47:24Depeche Mode over is Greg Pucciato.
- 47:30The Black Queen. Yeah, I could see him.
- 47:32If he was coming from his Black Queen style he could probably
- 47:37pull it off. Yeah, I don't know that that
- 47:39Greg was ever a typo fan. I think Ben at.
- 47:43Least respects him, you know. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:46I've never heard him say a bad thing about them or a good thing
- 47:48about them. We know that Greg is an
- 47:50incredible interpreter and vocalist.
- 47:52His stuff with Jerry Cantrell, Better Lovers, new album coming
- 47:56on the horizon. Yeah, he would be sick.
- 47:59Matt McNerney again rounds out your list of 10 from Grave
- 48:03Pleasures and a bunch of other hyphenated bands.
- 48:06Incredible singer, kind of gothy himself, kind of a Peter Murphy
- 48:10himself, right? Gary Newman himself, a little
- 48:13bit into his metal and and other things.
- 48:17He would be an absolute banger choice to.
- 48:20Right. And he would make sense, you
- 48:23know, like it's I can totally hear him singing most of that.
- 48:27You know, it would be. I don't, I don't think he could
- 48:30pull off the low notes in my Girlfriend's girlfriend.
- 48:33You know when we get into that like Andrew Eldridge register,
- 48:39but who could? And if you want some bigger
- 48:43names from the God scene that might do.
- 48:47It would be Carl McCoy. A feels of the Nephilim would be
- 48:51my outside the list pick would be another one.
- 48:55Right on with respect to the fact that you were like, you
- 49:00know, maybe a artist of a certain level or caricature
- 49:04shouldn't be part of this. Let's get the £800 gorilla out
- 49:09of the room. Philip Anselmo, personal friends
- 49:11with Peter, loves Type O Negative toward with Type O
- 49:14Negative, Pantera is doing the Pantera thing, even though we're
- 49:17supposed to get down for a good part of next year when Pantera
- 49:20is not in Europe with Metallica. I also would like to see N minor
- 49:25is absolutely Type O Negative influenced, right?
- 49:28I don't know if you were a fan, I was you know, could it be a
- 49:33thing where like Scour plays early before and then Philip
- 49:37comes out later and sings. Maybe we too much for him to do
- 49:41the. Yeah, no, I mean, I could, I
- 49:43could hear him do. And like I said, I could hear
- 49:44him doing the Carnivore songs, which I think they should do at
- 49:48least one. You know, hopefully Phil doesn't
- 49:54do race war, but you know, that was the first Carnivore song I
- 49:59heard. Name same first.
- 50:02Tape, you know, but. It would be.
- 50:04It would be very. Cool all the white you know he's
- 50:07done kill all the white people before on stage with them.
- 50:12With them, yeah, he said. It was his favorite song by
- 50:14them. Yeah.
- 50:15So yeah, get him off of that one.
- 50:18Right, I have a short list of people and I wanted your yay or
- 50:23nay on them or just thoughts that some may not be for you,
- 50:26but I think they'd be inherently interesting if they haven't.
- 50:30So First off, in terms of a female vocalist, no, no one,
- 50:34male or female can really be Peter.
- 50:36And this is none of this is with respect to bass playing, which
- 50:38will come come up in a minute. I would think of, you know, I'll
- 50:42talk about in a second, but Tammy Gilbert of Oceans of
- 50:44Slumber comes to mind. She's a world class vocalist.
- 50:47She's covered Wolf Moon on the last Oceans of Slumber record or
- 50:51the one before last. She's brilliant.
- 50:54She has spent a lot of time in New York recording and and
- 50:58touring and I think she's got something about her that would
- 51:02do a wonderful job as part of this thing.
- 51:07You know, I've heard that wolf moon cover and it was all right.
- 51:10Yeah. I mean, you know, I wouldn't be
- 51:13opposed to it. I would say as you were talking,
- 51:17another name that came up in my mind of someone, another female
- 51:21vocalist that's not Chelsea Wolf, that I would be open to
- 51:23hearing to would be Laura from Kailessa.
- 51:27Fuck yes. You know what a Big Bang game.
- 51:29Yeah. Anything for Laura, I love her
- 51:32so much. That and Speaking of, I
- 51:34mentioned probably there that discussion album is another good
- 51:39Halloween one that people can't sleep on.
- 51:41So that's my point. Noted.
- 51:44Noted. So another one off on my short
- 51:46list but maybe a little unconventional in terms of the
- 51:49vocals. But Jay Costa of Thy Will Be
- 51:52Done has been a friend to Ghost called.
- 51:53We premiered some stuff for them, interviewed them a few
- 51:56times. Big fan.
- 51:57He is a massive Peter Steele fanatic and a Type O Negative
- 52:01obsessive and I think he would do a great job on either.
- 52:05I think he can actually sing beyond what people have heard
- 52:08him do. Thy Will be Done as kind of like
- 52:10a more modern metal Pantera E band, but I think he can
- 52:15actually sing a little also. But he also would be perfectly
- 52:19suited for the more heavier, faster things from Typo.
- 52:24Yeah, and I'm up for getting some hardcore singers out there
- 52:27for the four. Slow, deep and hard for sure.
- 52:31Right on. Another name that I think would
- 52:34be unconventional but great would be led John Witherspoon of
- 52:37Sevens. The guy's got a beautiful voice.
- 52:40I think having heard the Soundgarden cover that Sevendust
- 52:45did a couple of years back on Blood and Stone, Phenomenal
- 52:49cover. Made it his own song.
- 52:51Like, OK, no one can replace Cornell.
- 52:54I'm not going to try to. I'm going to do, we're going to
- 52:56down tune it and do it my way soulfully.
- 52:58And I think LJ would be like incredible on Love You to Death
- 53:01or something like. That it would certainly be
- 53:04different. I'm not opposed to it.
- 53:07I'll I'll listen to it first and and reserve judgement.
- 53:11Yeah, maybe not the goth vibes but absolutely can do justice to
- 53:14it as a singer. Then another one similar to
- 53:17Philip friend of Peters, Dez Fafara of Coal Chamber and Devil
- 53:21Driver. Pretty sure Coal Chamber's first
- 53:23tour ever was opening for Type O Negative where they were booed
- 53:27every day on tour, which is hysterical.
- 53:30Not great for them, but like, they certainly toughen them the
- 53:32fuck up for the music business. And I think Dez can actually
- 53:37sing. We never got to hear that
- 53:39starter Dune project he'd been working on with Mark Morton
- 53:42beyond the one song that ever got leaked.
- 53:44And I think Dez loves Peter and would love probably lobby to be
- 53:48part of it, right? Yeah, I mean, new metal is my
- 53:51guilty pleasure, I guess. I don't talk about it a lot, but
- 53:55so I saw Cole Chamber absolutely blow Mud Van off the stage like
- 54:012 summers ago and so yes, I'm all for that.
- 54:08Chad would be another one. Mudvayne.
- 54:10We just covered them in in Boston.
- 54:14I mean, I saw Cole Chamber at Sickney World and like the
- 54:17biggest crowd of the day that wasn't in front of the mainstage
- 54:20for System of the Down was for Cole Chamber to hear to sing
- 54:23along with big truck and loco, which surprised this guy who was
- 54:26there back in the day 30 years ago to see that shit.
- 54:29But I, you know, all I know Dez is taking a beating in the
- 54:32press. I'm not one of them.
- 54:35I'm a wait and see kind of person.
- 54:36Judge later. I didn't know that there was
- 54:39anything going on with. It Oh, it's called Cradle Of
- 54:42Filth. Yes, before drama.
- 54:46Cradle Of Filth drama recently. Yeah, Danny Filth also away from
- 54:51it, he. Probably would lobby to be part
- 54:55of it, but yeah. If if you had to pick a singer
- 54:57like that I would say 2 guys that we haven't mentioned.
- 55:02I'm up for Chagroth of Demu doing it or even ICS Vortex if
- 55:08you can get him over and Allen Avril from Primordial I could
- 55:15hear him doing it too. That'd.
- 55:18Be interesting. That'd be an interesting
- 55:20backstage with Allen. Yeah.
- 55:26Here's another one. We know this guy loves Type O
- 55:28Negative and similar to Brett of Pallbearer is Nathan Garrett of
- 55:32Spirit of Drift. You know, he has that neon
- 55:35nightmare project that's basically synth wave Type O
- 55:37Negative, including the fucking font, the Type O Negative design
- 55:41and font, just just electric blue instead of electric green.
- 55:46And he's got a wonderful fucking voice.
- 55:49He has got to do metal shit down pat.
- 55:52They also have kind of transitioned away from classic
- 55:55modern American doom and into kind of a heavy metal brand but
- 55:59and even a little more thrash. But I could definitely see
- 56:03Spirit Adrift and or Nathan come in and do a great job.
- 56:07Yeah, I, I had that album. You know, the font was a little
- 56:13too on the chin for me. So yeah, I mean, I'm a give him
- 56:21a shot. I would prefer him over the
- 56:23Youtubers. How about a very big
- 56:28commercially successful metal band?
- 56:31Metal ish band like Avenged Sevenfold?
- 56:33Would you want to see M Shadows be part of something like this?
- 56:36Or no, I would. I'd be OK with.
- 56:43I was thinking about Courtney from Spirit Box.
- 56:47I might be open to that. If they had to like this bands
- 56:52like that, I would be open to her.
- 56:55And you know, I mean, I don't hate Sleep Token, but I don't
- 57:00think that I'd want to hear him. He he just doesn't have the
- 57:03voice for it. He has a great voice.
- 57:06It's just not great for that, you know?
- 57:08Yeah, any any kind of cover would be his interpretation of
- 57:11it not in action. Yeah, that would, it would sound
- 57:13like, oh, I can kind of hear a a sleep token cover of type of
- 57:21negative sounding more like dead or alive, you know?
- 57:26Oh, amazing. And I love Dead or Alive and I
- 57:31love Spin Me. I do spin me right round all the
- 57:34time at karaoke. Two last ones.
- 57:37This is kind of a no brainer. Billy Valo, formerly of him, has
- 57:41already been part of Roadrunner United, did Black Number One and
- 57:46Christian Woman if I'm not mistaken.
- 57:49Ville will undoubtedly have a new Ville Vallo solo album in 26
- 57:54and Come Here in 26 and or 27. It just kind of makes too much
- 57:59sense. But what do you think of?
- 58:00What did you think of him then, and what do you think of him in?
- 58:03This Yeah, I loved him. I did have a iffy experience
- 58:09with him live. I saw him was on this big tour
- 58:13that I think oh, Linkin Park was headlining, but I left before
- 58:17they showed up. But I went to see him and
- 58:21placebo because I'm and they were playing back-to-back and I
- 58:25was like, all right, I'm there. Placebo and him.
- 58:28I think, you know, HIM could be one of those other bands that
- 58:31like we see a resurgence of, you know, because they kind of hit
- 58:35back in the first part of Myspace when Peter was still
- 58:40alive, when him formed, when that first him album came out.
- 58:48So, yeah. So I'm all for it.
- 58:49I mean, I like him. And then last and never least,
- 58:54and you already mentioned this person before Peter Murphy, just
- 58:57because why, if I'm wish casting and I have infinite, infinite
- 59:01amounts of money to throw at this thing, I'm going to try to
- 59:03get Peter Murphy to do a type of negatives because Peter would
- 59:06have loved that, right? Yeah, yeah, Peter would have
- 59:10loved it. I don't know if Peter Murphy
- 59:12knows who they are. No.
- 59:14Probably not. Yeah.
- 59:16Peter Murphy doesn't know who anyone is except David Bowie
- 59:19and. Him.
- 59:19Yeah, yeah. He.
- 59:22Might have an inkling. I can see Peter Murphy sitting
- 59:24around listening to you. Well, he likes Ted.
- 59:26Can a dance too. So I can see, yeah.
- 59:30And and that Peter Murphy record was fucking exceptional, except
- 59:35the Boy George song, which I thought was terrible.
- 59:37Yeah, that was terrible. Fucking terrible.
- 59:39Fuck terrible, but Boy George. I love.
- 59:41Voyageurge the person or George the singer?
- 59:43I'd rather not. Right.
- 59:46Please. No.
- 59:47No thank you. I won't.
- 59:49I can't. Thank you.
- 59:52So, yeah, so I think that that's, I mean, I think that I'm
- 59:55being pretty generous with those since I'm so protective of typo.
- 59:59But you know, I mean, I wouldn't be open to hearing some singer,
- 1:00:07although it's not as big of a scene.
- 1:00:08So that's the thing if you put a bunch of goth bands on a metal
- 1:00:12festival. I don't know how that would
- 1:00:15work, but I think that there is, it would be interesting.
- 1:00:19It could be like a sick New World type thing, you know, so
- 1:00:22that I could see it in that respect.
- 1:00:28A lot of the bands maybe drag out freaking mindless self
- 1:00:32indulgence, though. I wouldn't want to hear Jimmy
- 1:00:34Urine sing any of it. But I mean, if you're thinking
- 1:00:36about bands to like, throw on, people might have missed out a
- 1:00:42him reunion for something like that would would work, you know?
- 1:00:46So somewhere there's a promoter out there that is, you know,
- 1:00:52that it's already been talked to.
- 1:00:54Yeah. No, we don't know.
- 1:00:55We don't know. I think the main thing here is
- 1:00:57you love this band, Your wish casting along a fan casting as
- 1:01:02well. You love this band, you would
- 1:01:03let we all. This is meant with the best
- 1:01:05intentions. We haven't talked about bass
- 1:01:08playing. As Johnny has said, no one can
- 1:01:10even do Peter on the bass, let alone on the vocals.
- 1:01:12I think Allen Robert of Life of Agony and Evan Seinfeld of
- 1:01:15Biohazard make the most sense. I would also say I know he's
- 1:01:18pretty much retired in terms of touring, but maybe Todd Strange
- 1:01:23of Sun Dome, Shine X Down X Crowbar also, you know, has the
- 1:01:30gravitas and the good underrated bass playing, you know?
- 1:01:34And then whoever, I don't know who else you would, you know,
- 1:01:36you could think of, but Alan comes to mind.
- 1:01:39I've already seen him do a whole misfit set with Danzig in
- 1:01:43Jerry's spot, so why not typo? Right.
- 1:01:46Yeah, I can see that. I can see, you know, I can see
- 1:01:49the guys from Prong getting involved in this to some extent
- 1:01:52too. You know, Tommy Victor both
- 1:01:54vocally and just prong the band and maybe even even though he's
- 1:01:59not part of that era anymore, but Paige Hamilton of Helmet
- 1:02:02would be an inspired choice to do some guitar on a song because
- 1:02:07that's that whole scene. Yeah, I think, and that's my
- 1:02:10thing, I think as long as it's representing New York and that's
- 1:02:13the thing. If it's a concert in New York,
- 1:02:16you some of these don't necessarily have to be as big of
- 1:02:20a name. You can put Harley Flanagan on
- 1:02:23bass for something on the on the first album, and although he
- 1:02:29does play a little more on like Alpha Omega, you know he was.
- 1:02:32You could tell he'd heard a Rush album or two.
- 1:02:36Frankie Bellow. John Joseph on stage doing it,
- 1:02:40you know. Depends on who else is there.
- 1:02:45Yeah, well, you can't have them and Harley Flanagan on the same
- 1:02:47stage. John, Blood clot has beef with
- 1:02:49everybody. Yeah, but I mean, I don't know
- 1:02:54if you heard that Blood Clot album that came out last.
- 1:02:56Year, it was great. Yeah, it.
- 1:02:58Was great. I think he still has it.
- 1:02:59I wanted, I want and he's. Important to New York team as
- 1:03:02far as I understand. Yeah, he is.
- 1:03:04He's he's usually important. You can, you can shit on the guy
- 1:03:08and the things he says and does. You can't shit on his legacy.
- 1:03:10Right. And you got to have some guys
- 1:03:12that are back there and back. So he's lifting weights.
- 1:03:14I think that that's an important part of Peter's legacy and that
- 1:03:19can't be overlooked. Road just lift.
- 1:03:22Yeah. Any other as we are on Halloween
- 1:03:27week and this is going to air this week tomorrow.
- 1:03:29What What are you doing for Halloween?
- 1:03:31Watch Scary. You know, we, we just moved, I
- 1:03:34just moved this past week. So I will be doing as little as
- 1:03:40possible. If I can find where Frankenstein
- 1:03:43is playing, maybe I think we got to our like the 31st is our
- 1:03:49supposed to turn the keys into the old place and have it
- 1:03:52cleaned. So that's going to be the
- 1:03:54morning. So I'll probably just listen to
- 1:03:58like Skinny Puppy while I'm doing that.
- 1:04:00And then, you know, I thought about the guys from Electric
- 1:04:03Hellfire Club were playing the night before at the Crowbar.
- 1:04:08I think it's Crowbar or the Orpheum here.
- 1:04:10And I thought about going to see that.
- 1:04:12But I think I'm probably I think my next show that I'm going to
- 1:04:16go out to is Sangwa Sugarbog in November.
- 1:04:20And then I'm saving up my money for Gary Newman and Ethel Kane.
- 1:04:25I've been on a huge Ethel Kane kick, which is kind of on her
- 1:04:28new album is worth checking out if you in in the Chelsea Wolf
- 1:04:35van. So it's it's kind of shoegazzy,
- 1:04:40dark Americana that's good for this time of year.
- 1:04:43So there's my plug. She doesn't need a plug.
- 1:04:46She's huge as it is, but. Yeah, right.
- 1:04:49She got so big, you know, she was spending time pretty happy
- 1:04:53about that. Wilsifer, always a pleasure to
- 1:04:55see you. I'm sure I will be back on one
- 1:04:57of your shows of. Business, Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:59I'll yeah, I'll link everything in the description where people
- 1:05:02can. Find we got to talk about the
- 1:05:04roster union next. Oh my God, we do.
- 1:05:07We'll find will@ghostcultman.com as well as find me and happy
- 1:05:11Halloween and rest in power forever, Peter Steele.
- 1:05:14Thanks, Will, and peace everybody.
- 1:05:17Thanks.
