- 0:00Speaker 1: This production is brought to you by the Recess Bell
- 0:07Speaker 1: and Oli is Arvin from Arren and the chip Match
- 0:09Speaker 1: And you're listening to the film Rea, whoa Alvin?
- 0:17Speaker 2: No way, I can't believe we got Alvin from Alvin
- 0:20Speaker 2: and the Chipmunks to introduced the first episode of twenty
- 0:23Speaker 2: twenty five of the film Reel. On today's episode, we're
- 0:26Speaker 2: gonna be going over the best movies of twenty twenty four.
- 0:30Speaker 2: What should you be watching? That's what I'm gonna let
- 0:32Speaker 2: you know. So I got my top five movies of
- 0:34Speaker 2: the year. But before we get to that, I got
- 0:36Speaker 2: some honorable mentions. So some of these movies actually might
- 0:40Speaker 2: have come out in twenty twenty three, but these are
- 0:42Speaker 2: movies that I saw in theaters in twenty twenty four.
- 0:45Speaker 2: In fact, I saw one hundred and one movies in
- 0:49Speaker 2: theaters for twenty twenty four. Starting off the honorable mentions
- 0:53Speaker 2: is American Fiction. I thought this was a brilliant movie
- 0:56Speaker 2: about a black author who's very intelligent, and he realizes
- 1:00Speaker 2: he's too smart for his audiences, so he starts writing
- 1:03Speaker 2: very dumb down versions of black centric stories and he
- 1:08Speaker 2: becomes really famous for it. But he has this dilemma
- 1:11Speaker 2: that should he sell out and you know, it's a
- 1:14Speaker 2: really really good movie with a really good ending. Lisa
- 1:17Speaker 2: Frankenstein I thought was super fun. This is you know,
- 1:19Speaker 2: a lot of these movies I saw at the beginning
- 1:21Speaker 2: of the year, but I remember really enjoying Lisa Frankenstein,
- 1:24Speaker 2: a really fun, dark comedy that is a good introduction,
- 1:27Speaker 2: I think to horror.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Because it's not an r ridden movie.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I think if you're twelve to seventeen, I think this
- 1:33Speaker 2: is a real good introduction to the genre of horror.
- 1:36Speaker 2: And I love the woman in it, Catherine Newton, I
- 1:39Speaker 2: think is one of my favorite young actresses going today.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Ordinary Angels is a really heartwarming story. It's based on
- 1:46Speaker 2: a true story about a family that's sort of down
- 1:49Speaker 2: in the dumpson one big tragedy happens after another, and
- 1:53Speaker 2: through the help of a woman in the town and
- 1:56Speaker 2: the support of a community, they're able to overcome a
- 2:00Speaker 2: real troubling time of their life. And it's definitely one
- 2:03Speaker 2: of the few times that I cried in theaters this year. Now,
- 2:07Speaker 2: Sidney Sweeney had a rough year for me. She was
- 2:09Speaker 2: in two of my least favorite movies of the year,
- 2:11Speaker 2: but I really enjoyed her in Immaculate. I didn't think
- 2:14Speaker 2: she was the strong point in that movie. But this
- 2:17Speaker 2: is a sick, twisted film about the church and nunneries
- 2:21Speaker 2: and the devil, and it had one.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Of my favorite endings of the year.
- 2:27Speaker 2: It pulled no punches, and I love that, particularly when
- 2:31Speaker 2: it comes to horror movies. I want sick and twisted
- 2:34Speaker 2: and it doesn't have to be a happy ending when
- 2:36Speaker 2: it comes to a horror movie. In this movie, the
- 2:38Speaker 2: final scenes in this movie are just batshit crazy, So
- 2:42Speaker 2: definitely recommend the film Immaculate. The First Omen is another movie,
- 2:46Speaker 2: similar sort of story with a woman who wants to
- 2:48Speaker 2: become a nun and a baby is being born, and
- 2:51Speaker 2: it's fucked up as well. It has very similar notes.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I definitely enjoyed the ending more so Tour to Immaculate,
- 3:00Speaker 2: but both movies were fantastic and really well shot, well
- 3:04Speaker 2: directed movies, good acting in both of them. It was
- 3:06Speaker 2: a good year for horror. Abigail was another movie that
- 3:10Speaker 2: I would love to show. The movie Abigail, and I'm
- 3:13Speaker 2: not going to even spoil what it's about because maybe
- 3:16Speaker 2: you didn't see the previous but this is a movie
- 3:18Speaker 2: that starts out as one thing and then thirty minutes
- 3:22Speaker 2: into the movie it becomes a completely different thing, and
- 3:24Speaker 2: I wish trailers didn't spoil this sort of twist that
- 3:28Speaker 2: happens in the movie.
- 3:30Speaker 1: It's like the film from Dust Till Dawn.
- 3:32Speaker 2: It starts off as you know, these robbers kidnapping people,
- 3:36Speaker 2: but then it becomes a vampire, you know, deadly sort
- 3:39Speaker 2: of movie. And that's the same vein of Abigail, where
- 3:42Speaker 2: it starts off as something and then just becomes something
- 3:44Speaker 2: completely different. A real fun time at the movies was
- 3:48Speaker 2: had when watching Abigail. Civil War was a great film,
- 3:51Speaker 2: and I thought it was gonna be a little more
- 3:53Speaker 2: political from watching the trailers. Essentially, it's a civil war
- 3:57Speaker 2: happening in modern times and it really didn't lean towards
- 4:01Speaker 2: any agenda.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Which I thought was great.
- 4:03Speaker 2: It was about a couple of journalists covering the Civil
- 4:07Speaker 2: War that was happening and they need to go visit
- 4:09Speaker 2: the current president of the United States and just shit
- 4:13Speaker 2: hits the fan. You know, them trying to travel from
- 4:15Speaker 2: state to state, they encounter people from both sides.
- 4:18Speaker 1: There's war going on, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I wish more people went to go see that movie.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Thelma was another movie based on a true story. It's
- 4:26Speaker 2: about a woman who gets scammed from you know, you know,
- 4:29Speaker 2: old people get phone calls, and she got scammed out
- 4:32Speaker 2: of her money, her life savings, and she goes on
- 4:35Speaker 2: this adventure to get revenge on the person that took
- 4:39Speaker 2: her money. And it's another one that's based on the
- 4:42Speaker 2: true story that.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I really enjoyed it.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It just goes to show you old people could still
- 4:46Speaker 2: get out there, they could still kick ass if need be.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Probably the most controversial movie of the year was the
- 4:52Speaker 2: documentary m I Racist.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I thought this movie was fantastic, and I think.
- 4:57Speaker 2: A lot of people aren't even gonna give this movie
- 4:59Speaker 2: the light of because the director is controversial. He has
- 5:02Speaker 2: said a bunch of controversial things. But I do think
- 5:04Speaker 2: this movie should be seen by everybody, particularly because there's
- 5:09Speaker 2: these anti racism workshops that these scammers essentially run, and
- 5:14Speaker 2: they'll have these dinners and charge people tens of thousands
- 5:18Speaker 2: of dollars to basically tell you how to not be racist.
- 5:21Speaker 2: But it just comes across insincere and they're just grifters.
- 5:24Speaker 1: They're trying to take your money.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I mean if you really felt this way and you're
- 5:29Speaker 2: so passionate about, you know, stopping racism, why would you
- 5:32Speaker 2: charge all this ridiculous.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Amount of money to teach you, you know, your learning.
- 5:38Speaker 1: So I think it should be seen.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I can understand why people wouldn't want to see it
- 5:42Speaker 2: because the guy is controversial, but it's a well made
- 5:44Speaker 2: documentary for sure, and it definitely should have been nominated
- 5:48Speaker 2: for an Academy Award or Golden Globe, and it's not
- 5:51Speaker 2: going to because the guy's just too controversial. Blink Twice
- 5:54Speaker 2: was great. Channing Tatum a really phenomenal performance.
- 5:57Speaker 1: This is sort of poking.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Light at I guess Epstein, Jeffrey Epstein. His character in
- 6:04Speaker 2: the movie, Channing Tatum is a famous person that does
- 6:08Speaker 2: something horrific and then he gets an island and sort
- 6:11Speaker 2: of just has retreats there and unwinds and tries to
- 6:14Speaker 2: change his past, but in reality he's just a piece
- 6:17Speaker 2: of crap. This has a very satisfying ending. It's an
- 6:21Speaker 2: fed up movie for sure, but definitely one of my favorites.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And Channing Tatum has proven he has some acting chops.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I thought he was fantastic in this one. So those
- 6:29Speaker 2: are some of my honorable mentions just missing the top
- 6:32Speaker 2: five would be Anora.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I love the film, but.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I mentioned a few times endings to movies and how
- 6:38Speaker 2: important that is to me. The ending of the movie
- 6:41Speaker 2: Anorra just didn't hit, but everything else was so good.
- 6:44Speaker 2: It's probably one of the funnier movies of the year.
- 6:47Speaker 2: It's a sick, twisted, dark comedy, and the lead actress
- 6:51Speaker 2: was beautiful.
- 6:52Speaker 1: She was brilliant.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And the basic story is this is a Cinderella type
- 6:57Speaker 2: of story where a woman who's a stripper. It's this
- 7:00Speaker 2: Russian billionaire who essentially just pays.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Her to be.
- 7:06Speaker 2: A sex worker, and then eventually he proposes to her,
- 7:10Speaker 2: but it turns out he's just some bratty, you know,
- 7:13Speaker 2: young kid that doesn't really even have a backbone, and
- 7:16Speaker 2: hilarity ensues and there's a chase going on and criminals
- 7:20Speaker 2: and it's definitely it just missed the top five.
- 7:24Speaker 1: It is a fantastic movie.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I just wasn't fully satisfied with the ending of Anora.
- 7:31Speaker 2: So those are my honorable mentions. Let's get to the
- 7:34Speaker 2: top five movies.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Of twenty twenty four.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Number five is a film called My Penguin Friend.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Why is a penguin in our home. It needs o help.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Look at this oil on you. I'll move. I always
- 7:52Speaker 1: get you clean.
- 7:58Speaker 2: It's penguin.
- 8:00Speaker 1: His name should be moving. This is such a sweet movie.
- 8:06Speaker 2: It's based on a true story. A lot of the
- 8:09Speaker 2: movies I've mentioned are based on true stories, and this
- 8:13Speaker 2: tells the story of a man who goes through a
- 8:16Speaker 2: tragedy in his life. And I'm not gonna say exactly
- 8:18Speaker 2: what happens because I want you guys.
- 8:20Speaker 1: To all see all of these movies.
- 8:21Speaker 2: He has a tragedy in his life and then a
- 8:23Speaker 2: couple of years later, years go by. He's an older
- 8:26Speaker 2: man and he happens to come across a penguin, but
- 8:30Speaker 2: he lives in Brazil. This penguin should not be here,
- 8:33Speaker 2: and the penguin's all aftop it has, you know, an
- 8:35Speaker 2: oil spill accident, and he has to rehabilitate this penguin
- 8:38Speaker 2: and he forms this bond with this penguin, and then
- 8:42Speaker 2: eventually he sends him off on his way so we
- 8:45Speaker 2: could go, you know, to a colder environment. But the
- 8:49Speaker 2: penguin returns the next year. And this happens for a
- 8:53Speaker 2: year after year after year, and it's it's just really heartwarming,
- 8:56Speaker 2: and there's trouble that happens. The penguin doesn't come back
- 8:59Speaker 2: one year and then and he goes on this rescue mission.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It's It's a movie that I would definitely recommend for everybody.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I think older people will enjoy this, younger kids would
- 9:08Speaker 2: enjoy this. It's heartwarming and it's just a smaller type
- 9:11Speaker 2: of movie. I wish more movies like this were made,
- 9:14Speaker 2: so definitely check it out. It's My Penguin Friend. Coming
- 9:19Speaker 2: in at number four on my list for best movies
- 9:21Speaker 2: of twenty twenty four is super Man The Christopher Reeves Story.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Mister Greeve currently has no movement for spontaneous respiration. Superman crazy.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Just that simple little thing over the horse. I'd ruined
- 9:36Speaker 1: my life and everybody else's. I won't fay able to
- 9:40Speaker 1: ski sale, throw them all the will won't be able
- 9:44Speaker 1: to make love to Dana. Maybe we should let me go.
- 9:48Speaker 2: What a heartbreaking story this was, and at the same
- 9:52Speaker 2: time it was also uplifting. This is a movie that
- 9:56Speaker 2: for people I don't know.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Who Christopher Reeve is. He's the guy who played.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Superman in the seventies eighties, and he had a horrific
- 10:02Speaker 2: accident on a horse in the nineties and became paralyzed.
- 10:06Speaker 2: And yeah, it sounds sad, and it definitely is, but
- 10:10Speaker 2: it also I think is an inspiring movie for sure,
- 10:14Speaker 2: because this guy who is a quadriplegic and seemingly just
- 10:19Speaker 2: gave up on life. You know, he didn't want to
- 10:22Speaker 2: live after finding out.
- 10:23Speaker 1: The news of this tragedy. By the way, this is.
- 10:26Speaker 2: A documentary for people who are wondering. And I don't know,
- 10:29Speaker 2: movies like this, they always make me feel like I
- 10:34Speaker 2: should never give up. And I think that's important because
- 10:37Speaker 2: I haven't dealt with anything that Christopher Reeve has dealt with,
- 10:41Speaker 2: but I've had my issues here and there, and every
- 10:43Speaker 2: now and then you just feel like, damn, I don't
- 10:45Speaker 2: know if I could go on anymore. But seeing this
- 10:48Speaker 2: guy who was once Superman and then was just you know,
- 10:52Speaker 2: a quadriplegic, and he said, you know what, I'm I'm
- 10:56Speaker 2: not going to give up. I am going to fight this.
- 11:00Speaker 2: I'm going to walk again one day and you know,
- 11:03Speaker 2: I'm not gonna say what happens, but it's just it's
- 11:07Speaker 2: one of those movies where you look at your life
- 11:10Speaker 2: and you think if this guy can fight. We all
- 11:13Speaker 2: can fight, and it's an interesting story just his his
- 11:16Speaker 2: life even before this accident was very interesting because he
- 11:20Speaker 2: was Superman and then he wasn't really able to break
- 11:23Speaker 2: away from that role. He was typecast in the sense,
- 11:26Speaker 2: you know, as Superman, so to go from that story
- 11:30Speaker 2: which was already interesting, to his post life of you know,
- 11:33Speaker 2: being in a wheelchair and fighting and raising money and
- 11:36Speaker 2: awareness and there's controversies with stem cell research. He was
- 11:39Speaker 2: one of the big advocates for stem cell research. So
- 11:43Speaker 2: really great documentary. I'm hoping it wins the Oscar this
- 11:46Speaker 2: year for Best Documentary. And it is my number four
- 11:48Speaker 2: favorite movie of twenty twenty four. So for this list,
- 11:53Speaker 2: before we get to number three, I really just talked
- 11:55Speaker 2: about movies I saw in theaters, but I did want
- 11:58Speaker 2: to give a quick shout out to two of documentaries
- 12:00Speaker 2: that I did watch at home, and I guess I'd
- 12:04Speaker 2: say they're just as good as the Superman documentary, This
- 12:07Speaker 2: Christopher Reeve documentary, and one is Jim Henson idm Man,
- 12:11Speaker 2: which is on Disney Plus all about the life of
- 12:14Speaker 2: Jim Henson, who I think is an absolute genius. The
- 12:17Speaker 2: only issue I had with it. It should have been longer.
- 12:20Speaker 2: This should have been a multiple part documentary. It's only
- 12:25Speaker 2: just under two hours. It could have easily been a
- 12:28Speaker 2: multiple part, you know, eight hour documentary because there's a
- 12:30Speaker 2: lot of stuff they didn't touch upon. And then I
- 12:33Speaker 2: also love the John Williams documentary also on Disney Plus,
- 12:36Speaker 2: music by John Williams. After watching this, I'll say he's
- 12:41Speaker 2: the greatest film composer of all time. You know, I
- 12:44Speaker 2: love him, but I always loved James Horner a little
- 12:47Speaker 2: bit more, but after this documentary, he's such a genius
- 12:51Speaker 2: John Williams.
- 12:52Speaker 1: So definitely check out those two if you do.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Have Disney Plus. Let's move on to the number three
- 12:56Speaker 2: best movie of twenty twenty four, and.
- 13:00Speaker 1: It is The Wild Robot. Sometimes to survive, we must
- 13:10Speaker 1: become more than we were programmed to be.
- 13:13Speaker 2: I knew i'd love this movie right from the trailer.
- 13:15Speaker 2: It was actually one of my more anticipated, if not
- 13:17Speaker 2: my most anticipated movie of twenty twenty four, and it
- 13:21Speaker 2: did not disappoint at all.
- 13:22Speaker 1: The story of a robot that is.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Malfunctioned of sorts and sent off to a land where
- 13:28Speaker 2: it's not supposed to be in the forest with a
- 13:30Speaker 2: bunch of animals and all these animals are terrified of
- 13:34Speaker 2: this robot, but it has this heart of gold and
- 13:37Speaker 2: learns to become a mother of sorts to a young
- 13:41Speaker 2: goose who doesn't have a mother, And like my penguin friend,
- 13:45Speaker 2: it also has deeper meaning towards it. And it's a
- 13:49Speaker 2: movie that again, kids will enjoy, but I think parents
- 13:53Speaker 2: will also enjoy this movie. I know several parents that
- 13:56Speaker 2: took their kids to this movie that told me that
- 13:58Speaker 2: they were crying while while the movie. Particularly mothers, I
- 14:01Speaker 2: think we'll find this movie really heartwarming and emotional, especially
- 14:05Speaker 2: even if if you've had a like a miscarriage.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I know that sounds like sick and twisted.
- 14:10Speaker 2: How could this, you know, animated movie Wild Robot be
- 14:14Speaker 2: about something so dark, But if you've gone through, you know,
- 14:16Speaker 2: a childbirth that didn't work out, or if you know
- 14:19Speaker 2: somebody that was adopted, and I think that movie, this
- 14:23Speaker 2: movie will hit home really well. And it's animated beautifully,
- 14:28Speaker 2: voice cast thing is perfection, and it's just a really heartwarming,
- 14:34Speaker 2: engaging sort of story about a robot raising a goose
- 14:39Speaker 2: and trying to teach this goose how to fly and
- 14:43Speaker 2: how to migrate and I love movies like this. I
- 14:47Speaker 2: love the idea of this, this robot not being accepted
- 14:51Speaker 2: by the forest animals, but then eventually forming this bond
- 14:55Speaker 2: with all of them and fighting for their survival. And
- 14:57Speaker 2: it is heartwarming and it's heartbreaking and and it's perfect.
- 15:00Speaker 2: It's a fantastic movie. And that's why it is number
- 15:03Speaker 2: three on my list of best movies of twenty twenty four.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Let's move on to number two, Late Night with the Devil,
- 15:12Speaker 2: Well Night Owls. We've got a heck of a show
- 15:14Speaker 2: in store for you tonight, and I'm very excited for
- 15:16Speaker 2: you to.
- 15:16Speaker 1: See it all unfold before your very eyes. I really
- 15:19Speaker 1: hope you love it. God, I hope you love it.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Love it, you love it.
- 15:24Speaker 2: You don't really get too many movies set in the seventies,
- 15:27Speaker 2: and I love the history of television, especially those late
- 15:30Speaker 2: night shows from back then. You're Dick Cavitz and you're
- 15:33Speaker 2: Johnny Carson. So this plays into something that I'm already
- 15:36Speaker 2: interested in, mixing it in with the horror elements. It's
- 15:40Speaker 2: something that was catered perfectly for Justin Greenberg. And the
- 15:45Speaker 2: story is about a late night talk show host who
- 15:48Speaker 2: is failing. He doesn't have the numbers that he once had,
- 15:51Speaker 2: and he's had tragedy in his life. And it's Halloween
- 15:55Speaker 2: night and he wants to get a ratings boost, and
- 15:58Speaker 2: he decides to have some interesting guests on his show.
- 16:01Speaker 2: And the main thing I really love about this movie
- 16:04Speaker 2: is the way that it looks, because it's shot like
- 16:07Speaker 2: a seventies talk show, and I thought that was such
- 16:10Speaker 2: a unique sort of way to go about making a movie.
- 16:14Speaker 2: So this talk show host invites a girl who claims
- 16:18Speaker 2: to be possessed by the devil. On the show, there's
- 16:21Speaker 2: somebody on the show that is a skeptic for you know,
- 16:24Speaker 2: what's actually happening, And I don't want to get into
- 16:27Speaker 2: too much of what actually happens, but that's the basic plot.
- 16:30Speaker 2: And the acting is great. Like I said, the visuals
- 16:32Speaker 2: are fantastic. I know there was a minor controversial thing
- 16:36Speaker 2: because they used AI For like a split second, I
- 16:40Speaker 2: didn't see that this was anything that would be controversial
- 16:43Speaker 2: at all, if I'm gonna be honest with you. But
- 16:45Speaker 2: it's definitely a movie I think, out of all the
- 16:47Speaker 2: movies that I've mentioned so far, it's the movie I
- 16:49Speaker 2: want to watch again. And I'm gonna eventually watch all
- 16:53Speaker 2: these movies again, but this is the one I want
- 16:55Speaker 2: to watch, like right now, because it's been a while.
- 16:57Speaker 2: I think it came out February or so, and it's
- 17:01Speaker 2: really really good, and I bet you there's things that
- 17:03Speaker 2: I missed.
- 17:04Speaker 1: I don't know if all these movies are for everybody.
- 17:07Speaker 2: That's another thing. These are my personal movies. I think
- 17:11Speaker 2: something like this people would enjoy, but I think there
- 17:14Speaker 2: are elements of it that they wouldn't enjoy, where something
- 17:17Speaker 2: like My Penguin Friend I think would be acceptable for everybody.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I think if you watch the Christopher Reeve documentary and
- 17:24Speaker 2: you didn't like it, I think something's actually mentally wrong
- 17:27Speaker 2: with you. If you watch Late Night with the Devil
- 17:29Speaker 2: and didn't like it, I could understand that. I could,
- 17:32Speaker 2: because it does get a little.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Bit weird at the end, But weird is good. I
- 17:36Speaker 1: like weird.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Like I said at the beginning, this is a movie
- 17:38Speaker 2: that I think was catered particularly for people that like
- 17:42Speaker 2: the type of movies that I like. And that's why
- 17:44Speaker 2: I have Late Night with the Devil at number two.
- 17:47Speaker 1: But what is number one?
- 17:48Speaker 2: Let's find out my number one movie of twenty twenty
- 17:51Speaker 2: four is the Substance?
- 17:54Speaker 1: Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself? Younger,
- 18:01Speaker 1: more beautiful, more perfect.
- 18:05Speaker 2: We talked about The Substance a few weeks ago on
- 18:08Speaker 2: the show with my buddy Antonio, and we both loved
- 18:12Speaker 2: this movie and thinking about it even more so as
- 18:16Speaker 2: the months have gone on since I've actually seen the movie.
- 18:19Speaker 2: It had to be number one. It just had to be.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Everything about it is again catered towards me. It's sick,
- 18:26Speaker 2: it's twisted, it's funny, it's a dark comedy for people
- 18:29Speaker 2: that don't know the basic plot of the Substance is
- 18:32Speaker 2: there's this down on her luck actress.
- 18:34Speaker 1: And that's actually interesting that.
- 18:36Speaker 2: I've talked about that, you know, Christopher Reeve being a
- 18:39Speaker 2: down on his luck, you know, sort of actor and
- 18:41Speaker 2: not being able to get work the Late Night with
- 18:43Speaker 2: the Devil host being you know, a host that was
- 18:46Speaker 2: once more famous than he once was. And that's sort of,
- 18:49Speaker 2: you know, similar with The Substance, because there's this actress
- 18:52Speaker 2: who was really famous in the eighties and she's become
- 18:55Speaker 2: this sort of workout guru, I guess Richard Simmons type
- 18:59Speaker 2: of you know, a character that presents workout videos and
- 19:04Speaker 2: she's lost her fame. She was once youing on top
- 19:07Speaker 2: of the world. Now she's bottom of the barrel. And
- 19:09Speaker 2: she's older, and in Hollywood, the older you are, particularly
- 19:14Speaker 2: if you're a woman, you lose out on jobs. So
- 19:17Speaker 2: there's a lot of allegories for this movie pointing out
- 19:20Speaker 2: some of the hypocrisies in Hollywood and some of the
- 19:23Speaker 2: body issues that I guess some actresses go through and
- 19:26Speaker 2: actors as well. So this woman she sees that she's
- 19:30Speaker 2: being phased out, and she finds out about this breakthrough
- 19:34Speaker 2: treatment called the substance, which makes another version of her
- 19:40Speaker 2: pop out of her back. I know that sounds super
- 19:43Speaker 2: weird and it might not make sense, but another version
- 19:46Speaker 2: of her gets to live their own life. But they
- 19:50Speaker 2: are one that has to be. You know, said that
- 19:52Speaker 2: they are the same person. But it's so confusing when
- 19:57Speaker 2: speaking it, but if you're watching it, you'll understand exactly
- 20:00Speaker 2: what's going on. Again, I think this could also represent
- 20:06Speaker 2: something like a maybe like an addiction, because when when
- 20:09Speaker 2: you're taking medication and you're or addicted to a medication
- 20:14Speaker 2: or addicted to pills or drugs or booze, you become
- 20:17Speaker 2: someone else, but you are the same person. I could
- 20:20Speaker 2: definitely see the writer and director thinking that there are
- 20:25Speaker 2: symbolisms and allegories as I mentioned for other things.
- 20:28Speaker 1: But basically, you know what, I'm gonna go to the Wikipedia.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Maybe they'll have a better explanation as the exactly you know,
- 20:35Speaker 2: the rules of what's going on in the substance. So
- 20:39Speaker 2: the two bodies must switch consciousness every seven days without exception,
- 20:44Speaker 2: with the inactive body remaining unconscious and fed intravenously with
- 20:48Speaker 2: a weekly food supply. Daily injections of a stabilizer fluid
- 20:53Speaker 2: extracted from the original body are necessary to prevent yourself
- 20:57Speaker 2: from deteriorating. But like I said, this is just a
- 21:01Speaker 2: movie that touches upon getting older and the length that
- 21:06Speaker 2: you will go to to stay young. So for women
- 21:09Speaker 2: in Hollywood getting plastic surgery, taking experimental drugs, euro zen Fix,
- 21:15Speaker 2: all these sort of things that have come out in
- 21:17Speaker 2: recent years, this is, you know, shedding light on that
- 21:21Speaker 2: in a weird, twisted body horror sort of way. And
- 21:24Speaker 2: then the final act of this movie is just batshit
- 21:27Speaker 2: crazy and it's everything I love.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I love these types.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Of crazy body horror eighties types films. You know, your
- 21:35Speaker 2: movies like the Thing and the Fly. If you like
- 21:38Speaker 2: movies like that, you'll definitely love the last act of
- 21:41Speaker 2: this movie. But the acting is fantastic. The music is
- 21:44Speaker 2: my favorite. It's my favorite score of the year. Visually,
- 21:47Speaker 2: it's an amazing looking movie. I got vibes of the
- 21:50Speaker 2: Shining for sure. There's a lot of hallway scenes that
- 21:53Speaker 2: got me feeling like the shining and the colors and
- 21:56Speaker 2: the music and the women are beautiful, and it's everything
- 22:00Speaker 2: I loved about the movie, particularly when everything just fucking
- 22:04Speaker 2: gets crazy at the end.
- 22:05Speaker 1: It's one of those movies that.
- 22:08Speaker 2: I personally can't wait to watch again and again and again,
- 22:13Speaker 2: and that is why it is my number one favorite
- 22:16Speaker 2: movie of twenty twenty four.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Check out all these movies.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I don't know if the substance is for everybody, but
- 22:23Speaker 2: if you like fucked up shit, you'll definitely enjoy that movie. Now,
- 22:27Speaker 2: I'm gonna tell you next week what movies to avoid,
- 22:32Speaker 2: because I'm gonna have my top five worst movies of
- 22:35Speaker 2: twenty twenty four. And maybe we can have another Chipmunk,
- 22:37Speaker 2: perhaps introduce the show.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I don't know. I heard Theodore is a big fan
- 22:42Speaker 1: of the film Reel. Thank you all for listening so long,
